CONNECT A LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT On behalf of the over 2,600 Junior League of Austin members, welcome to our 44th annual A Christmas Affair! A Christmas Affair is a market with a mission. Every dollar raised during this five-day event will provide much-needed funding that makes our signature programs and nonprofit partnerships possible. The Junior League of Austin is a dynamic women’s leadership organization committed to our mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the greater Austin community. Every year, we partner with a diverse group of 25 to 30 local non-profits – providing them much needed funding as well as volunteers. Our members also impact the lives of local families through our signature programs: Food in Tummies: For 10 years, The Junior League of Austin has provided backpacks of nutritious food to two elementary schools in Del Valle Independent School District.

Coats for Kids: Distributing new and gently used coats to over 30,000 children each December. Kids in Cool Shoes: Our newest signature program matches children with a new pair of athletic shoes.
Every dollar raised during this five-day event will provide much-needed funding that makes our signature programs and non-profit partnerships possible.
These programs are entirely planned, lead, and executed by our members in their capacity as volunteers with our organization. In total, the women of The Junior League of Austin will provide over $650,000 in funding and spend over 160,000 hours volunteering within our community this year. This fall, we officially opened our new Headquarters – The Junior League of Austin Community Impact Center, or CIC. Located at 5330 Bluffstone Lane, we have room to support our mission and signature programs. Additionally, meeting space is available to rent for events large and small. Thank you for choosing to celebrate the beginning of the holidays at A Christmas Affair this year! The women of The Junior League of Austin are grateful for your support!

LEGACY A LETTER FROM THE
SUSTAINING PRESIDENT In our fast-paced times, this phrase makes us pause and take a breath, thinking of holidays past. This year’s A Christmas Affair theme, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” evokes feelings and memories of family, togetherness, excitement and tradition. In that spirit, and on behalf of the Sustaining Members of The Junior League of Austin, welcome to 2019’s A Christmas Affair! Austin today is tremendously different from the Austin of 50, or even 20 years ago; but the qualities that we cherish most in our city – compassion, generosity and creativity – have endured.

This is also true for The Junior League of Austin (JLA). Women’s lives are evolving and how we volunteer is adapting. The League, founded in 1934, is changing along with the times. This year we made our biggest move yet, literally! The opening of our new home, the Community Impact Center (CIC), is the culmination of more than ten years of planning, preparation and tireless effort. In the CIC, we will find new and innovative ways to fulfill our mission of improving the community, developing the potential of women and promoting volunteerism. As Sustaining President for 2019-2020, I’m honored to represent the League’s 1,288 Sustaining Members, the JLA “alumnae”. Having completed our years of Active League service, we are now engaged in the community, applying the many skills we learned through our time in the League. I’m grateful for our Sustainers’ continued support and involvement.
Women’s lives are evolving and how we volunteer is adapting.
A Christmas Affair is a tremendous endeavor, involving months of planning, thousands of volunteer hours and generous donor support. Without this incredible event, which raises funds for our community projects and programs, The Junior League of Austin would not be able to give back yearround. Thank you for being here with us for A Christmas Affair!

The Strength of Women Welcome Home to the Community Impact Center! By: Paige Richards

fter over 10 years of strategic planning, hard work, and determination, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has officially moved into their new home: the Community Impact Center (CIC). What started out as a dream has turned into a reality. While JLA settles into its new home, the CIC is readily available to host different groups and organizations. There are several rooms available, equipped and ready to serve
The Junior League of Austin’s Community Impact Center. a variety of functions. While the building was designed to support and enhance JLA’s current initiatives, it is also a new premier event venue and meeting space that is available for rent to all members of the local community. Those who utilize the space are also supporting the mission of JLA: an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. True to its Austin roots, the CIC is situated amongst numerous well-established trees. Great care was taken

by JLA to highlight the natural beauty of the landscape. On the balcony, visitors may hear the locust and feel a calm breeze, as if in a peaceful sanctuary. The 48,000 square foot building features four meeting and event spaces on the first level and five on the second. Located on the first floor is the Community Ballroom. This room provides a place for League members (Active, Provisional, and Sustaining) to gather, hold social events, and work on League supported community projects. The CIC also has an attached parking garage that includes over 200 covered spaces.
“Because of all the added space CIC provides, the FIT Pantry will now have the availability to order larger food shipments in bulk for its inventory, rather than ordering food on a weekly basis.”
A stunning feature of the Community Impact Center is the large wraparound porch located on the backside of the first and second floors. From the porch, visitors can enjoy the scenery around the dry creek that weaves along the back of the property. Enhanced with carefully chosen, chic patio furniture, the porch is the perfect gathering location. The North side of the porch boasts a beautiful view of the Oak Grove. Walk down the stairs and take in the beauty of the peaceful surroundings. With its convenient central location, the CIC is truly an oasis right

in the heart of Austin. This is the perfect setting for the next chapter in the League’s history. The CIC will become a hub of positive impact by supporting not only the endeavors of the JLA, but also those of our community partners. Three JLA projects that needed additional room were Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS), Food In Tummies (FIT) and Coats For Kids (CFK). Space and amenities for continued expansion and growth were taken into consideration when designing the CIC. The increased space allows for greater productivity, storage and improved organization, while also incorporating features to enhance the capabilities of JLA programs. KICS is the newest program of JLA and needed a dedicated space. Located in the FIT room, this space will provide a place for the committee to organize and sort shoes prior to distribution. KICS Recipient Eligibility Coordinator, Sandra Nava, notes the loading dock at CIC is a place “where shoes can easily be delivered. This will provide a considerable improvement to our delivery logistics!” In addition to the KICS space, Nava is
excited about the CIC for other reasons: “I love that our organization will have a place to gather together and converge our ideas and experiences with the common focus of helping the Austin community. I am excited about the strong, smart and united women that will fill this center for years to come and the impact they will make to each other and our community.” FIT Pantry Co-Chair Alexsandria DeLeon is thrilled about how her committee benefits from the move to the CIC: “Because of all the added space the CIC provides, the FIT Pantry will now have the availability to order larger food shipments in bulk for its inventory, rather than ordering food on a weekly basis.” Adequate space is a crucial part of the FIT program. CFK is enthusiastic and ready. Beth Bowers, Logistics Coordinator, stated, “So much of what we do is plan. I feel the CIC will help invigorate us to try new ideas!” Bowers is also excited “to welcome our amazing CFK sponsors.” She believes the CIC highlights what a strong group of women with a common commitment to making Austin a better place can achieve.

Additionally, the Community Impact Center has event and meeting space available for rent to the community at large. The Junior League of Austin strategically established a revenue-generating solution of providing world-class space for rent in order to support the ongoing operations of this beautiful facility. The League encourages members of the community to book their next event, meeting or social gathering at the CIC. All booking proceeds go directly to support the mission, projects and community partners of JLA. The Junior League of Austin is grateful for the opportunity to create and design a new Austin landmark as it continues to grow and find new ways to provide additional resources and support for the Austin non-profit community. The CIC is the launchpad for League members and those serving the Central Texas community to go out into this world and make a lasting impact, for it’s not the building itself that creates the legacy, but that which is done within.

Food In Tummies
10 Years of FIT and The Future This year, Food in Tummies (FIT), a signature program of The Junior League of Austin, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary. Each year, FIT continues to grow in an effort to serve local children. By: Rekha Roarty

or most students, school is a fun, but stressful time. Stress can extend into the weekend where kids worry about homework, school projects and playground issues. Some children, however, also worry about food on the weekends. At Hillcrest and Baty Elementary in Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD), approximately 1,000 students rely on free breakfasts and lunches provided by their school during the week. On the weekends when the school cafeteria is closed, these children do not have a guaranteed meal. The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) program, Food in Tummies (FIT), aims to resolve this source of stress by providing weekend nutrition to food-insecure children in DVISD. Unfortunately, lack of a reliable source of regular food, known as food insecurity, is a common problem throughout Texas. Over 1.8 million students across the state suffer from food insecurity, which can contribute to chronic absenteeism, poor performance on tests and emotional difficulties. Through FIT, JLA has closely collaborated with DVISD since 2009 to provide healthy,

weekend food choices to food-insecure children. DVISD was selected because it was labeled a “food desert.” A food desert is an area where nutritious, high-quality food choices are often not easily available. Throughout the school year, JLA members volunteer in the FIT Pantry each week where healthy, donated food is safely stored, sorted and packaged into backpacks. JLA volunteers deliver nearly 1,000 backpacks weekly to Hillcrest Elementary and Baty Elementary. In addition to food, each backpack contains bilingual flyers with information on making healthy food choices and tips on how to stay active. Students are responsible for returning their backpacks to school each Monday, where the backpacks are picked up by a JLA volunteer and brought back to the Community Impact Center (CIC) to be cleaned and refilled for the following weekend. Each year, hundreds of JLA members-Provisionals, Actives and Sustainers--spend hours sorting food, packing backpacks, delivering the backpacks and volunteering at school events to promote FIT initiatives, such as healthy lifestyles. Recently, FIT volunteers have been able to get involved Page Sponsored By: Sun Connor in honor of Danny and Max

in teaching students about healthy lifestyle choices by participating in school initiatives. As education on healthy food choices can be the first step in creating lifelong beneficial habits, these opportunities help advance FIT initiatives. Volunteers lead bilingual, healthy cooking classes at the schools as well as active, afterschool programs. Additionally, volunteers can participate at FIT pep rallies, which have been particularly popular with students. These biannual events encourage students to live active lifestyles and make healthy food choices. “While FIT may have changed over the years, the one thing that has remained the same is FIT’s focus on benefiting the community and positively impacting children’s lives,” explains Elizabeth Peña, FIT Chair. The Junior League of Austin hopes to expand FIT’s impact on Austin. The move into CIC provided additional space for FIT to grow as a program and to expand its reach throughout Austin. Alexsandria DeLeon, one of the current FIT Pantry Co-Chairs, says she enjoys the larger space for her committee and hopefully in the future, the additional space will allow FIT to serve additional schools. “I would
love for FIT to have the capabilities to serve more schools/ districts, as well as provide food to children throughout the summer and winter breaks,” shares DeLeon. The Junior League of Austin and FIT aim to continue to work towards providing weekend nutrition for Austin students to focus on building bright futures through their education.

A Letter from A Christmas Affair Chair Courtney Dickey Welcome Home to the 44th annual Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) A Christmas Affair, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”. This year’s theme celebrates holidays spent at home with loved ones and captures the anticipation of JLA’s first Christmas in its new home, the Community Impact Center (CIC). To fully embrace the theme, we transformed Palmer Events Center into a festive holiday home. From the front patio at the entrance, to the library bar and cozy living room, to the upstairs Gingerbread Loft, no details were left unnoticed.
There are many firsts to celebrate at this year’s A Christmas Affair (ACA)! Providing additional food options for our patrons, the Hometown Food Court features three local food trucks with rotating menus. We centered Wednesday’s Opening Night party around one of the most beloved family traditions: the lighting of the Christmas tree. To increase the number and variety of merchants for our guests to shop, we introduced The Gingerbread Loft on Thursday and Friday highlighting Texas businesses and products. Speaking of firsts, December 25, 2019 will be JLA’s first Christmas in its new home, the Community Impact Center. CIC, located at 5330 Bluffstone Lane in Northwest Austin, opened its doors in August 2019. It serves as the new central hub for meetings and gatherings for over 2,500

JLA members. In addition, and equally important, it is a building dedicated to serving our city. CIC is the place where League members come together in partnership with the community, united by a resolve to “do something” in response to today’s pressing needs. ACA is made possible by its generous sponsors, The Junior League of Austin volunteers and its loyal patrons who return year after year to be a part of this special tradition. An enormous thank you to the 2019 A Christmas Affair Committee! These exceptional 79 women have worked tirelessly on this event since March. They take time away from family, work and other commitments to ensure that this week is everything our guests and merchants have come to expect from ACA. On a personal note, thank you to my family. They are a constant reminder that there truly is no place like home. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is a beloved Christmas carol with a melancholy message. The song is written from the perspective of a WWII soldier who hopes to be home for Christmas, “if only in [his] dreams.” Whether you will be home for the holidays, or apart from family but together in spirit, we hope that this year’s A Christmas Affair evokes feelings of comfort and joy. So, again, welcome! We invite you to make yourself at home.

IN 2005 I WAS A STARRY-EYED ENTREPRENEUR WHO DREAMED OF CREATING A PLACE WHERE PRE-LOVED DESIGNER FURNITURE COULD FIND NEW HOMES… During the 14 years since I opened that first store in South Austin, I expanded, moved across town, and expanded again. My industry network broadened as well, and we became a nationallyrecognized showroom featuring prized pieces from Texas and beyond. Today, I am lucky to work with a staff of passionate curators who each specialize in a different type of inventory, from furniture, to art, rugs, accessories and jewelry. Come explore our treasures in person or online at www.curatedtx.com. We are excited to share this bounty with you—to enhance your life and personal style. ~Lisa
