THE PRICE IS WRONG
EasyJet and Co can cost more than main airlines BUDGET airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet are NOT always the cheapest travel option to and from the UK, according to a new report. If you are a family with young children, you could save nearly £100 by booking with a mainstream carrier like British Airways. The survey reveals that when extra surcharges for baggage, seat reservations, priority boarding and administrative services are added, families pay on average £87 more for booking with the cut-price boys. But before you start rearranging the family’s summer visit, the one route investigated where it is invariably cheaper to travel with the budget boys is London to Alicante! The comparison website Idealo.co.uk analysed flight prices from 10 airlines over four popular routes from London under “reasonable travel conditions’’ for a family of two adults, a child and an infant. The investigation involved budget carriers EasyJet, Ryanair, Germanwings and Norwegian, plus mainstream airlines British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Air Berlin and Swiss. Fares on four return shorthaul flights were studied – the Spanish beach destinations of Palma and Alicante and city breaks in Berlin and Barcelona. And once “reasonable’’ baggage costs
DONNA GEE reports were added for the family of four, booking with Easyjet and Ryanair did not seem such a bargain after all. Excluding all surcharges, the EasyJet flight from London to Barcelona was £60.97 less than British Airways. However , the survey found that “the value of checking in a 23kg bag for free with British Airways more than makes up the price difference.’’ The report points out that it would cost between £64.40 and £92.22 to send a 23kg package from the UK to Spain via Royal Mail. It concludes: “The prices from Ryanair and EasyJet were also the least transparent of the four low-cost carriers in the research. “When comparing the cost per seat found on flight search engines with the ‘real cost’ per seat in our study, the ‘real cost’ was 92% more expensive for EasyJet and 166% more expensive for Ryanair.’’ An Idealo spokesperson said of the research findings: “The results should not vilify budget airlines, as they can provide an excellent value to certain types of travellers. “However, as in the case of family travel, budget airlines are not always the best choice for short-haul routes.” Unless, of course, you are heading from London to Alicante...

Ryanair girl falls out of plane A RYANAIR flight attendant has been treated for head injuries after falling out of a Stansted-bound plane. She plunged from the aircraft to the tarmac during a hurried takeoff in Sweden, according to local reports. It's believed she was trying to close a rear door when she fell out. Investigators are examining the possibility that the door flew open due to a sudden gust of wind while the stewardess was holding on to the handle. Airport CEO Annika Nyberg said: “The stairs had been removed and the door to the plane was closed. What made her open the door we don't know. “I find it hard to believe that she took a step out, it is more likely that the door flew open while she was holding the handle. It is rather windy today." The incident happened as flight FR-967 was preparing for a delayed departure from Gothenburg to Stansted after the late arrival of another plane. Paramedics took the injured crew member to
