THE ITALIAN JOB Man killed in drug hit

ALEX TRELINSKI

A

Second man has suffered a violent death in just over a week on the Orihuela Costa after three masked men, said to be Italian, burst into a Dehesa de Campoamor property killing a 49-year-old Italian national, as well tying up his girlfriend. An autopsy revealed that he suffered multiple stab wounds as well as being suf-

focated and beaten, with suffocation ruled as the actual cause of death. The incident in the early hours of Monday morning follows the fatal glassing of British chef Scott Waring in a Villamartin bar on Saturday January 16th. The attackers invaded the Campoamor apartment on Calle Vicente Blasco Ibáñez at between 2.00 and 3.00am on Monday according to the

Guardia Civil, and tied up the victim’s Romanian partner before beating up and stabbing the victim, who was discovered in a pool of blood, when emergency services arrived at the scene. The theory behind the hit is that the intruders were looking for cocaine and other drugs at the flat close to Caleta de la Glea beach, and when they were unable to obtain anything, they turned violent against the Italian resident, and left with three thousand euros, as well as some bottles of spirits. The Romanian woman confirmed to the authorities that the masked trio burst in and shouted “Where was the cocaine?” The Guardia discovered

that the house had been completely ransacked in the search for drugs with furniture overturned and mattresses slashed, in a fruitless attempt to find any secret compartments or stashes. They also turned over the allotted garage to the flat. It’s believed the men entered the building by climbing over a fence and getting through one of the windows. The un-named victim was said to have lived in the ground-floor rented property for around a year, with local residents saying that he pretty much kept himself to himself, though he did frequent a number of British owned bars in the area. Hehad no criminal record in Spain.

Alicante Provincial

Council's vice-president and tourist spokesman, Eduardo Dolon, led the presentation along with Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and tourism councillor, Sofía Álvarez. A video promoting the annual Moors and Christians festival was screened, along with Bascuñana repeating his recent announcement that he was looking for the festival to be approved as an event of national tourist interest.

The Guardia Civil arrested 24 people, many linked to the Partido Popular in raids in the Valencia region on Tuesday in an anti-corruption operation investigating the alleged payment of illegal commissions in exchange for public work contracts. The arrests, most involving PP members or for-

mer members include the president until last year of the Valencia Provincial council Alfonso Rus. This is the latest in a string of corruption scandals over public contracts awarded during the property boom before the crash in 2008. The investigation of 29 people remains open, including former mayors and a former head of the

PP in Valencia, a spokeswoman for a regional court said. The operation, which involved raids on businesses and public offices including the PP regional headquarters, is investigating cases of embezzlement of public funds, influence peddling, bribery and money laundering, according to the spokeswoman.

A little-publicised French air-traffic controllers strike caused 18 Ryanair flights to be cancelled on Tuesday at Alicante-Elche airport with some three thousand pas-

sengers affected. Ryanair issued a terse statement criticising what it said was the “selfish actions of the strikers who were blackmailing their costumers”.

Keep It Quiet Elche council passed a new law on Monday which restricts construction work in key tourist areas like La Marina Village and Arenales de Sol during the summer peak period, with only essential roadworks to be permit-

ted in July and August. The council also called for financial help from the Valencian Government in fighting processionary caterpillars as well creating more car parking areas on empty sites across the municipality.

An early Monday morning earthquake sent people running into the streets and caused damage to buildings in Spain's north African enclave of Melilla. The quake had a magnitude of 6.2 and had its epicentre in the Mediterranean Sea about 77 kilometres northwest of Melilla, the Spanish city that is surrounded by Morocco and the sea.

Spain's National Geographical Institute said the quake struck at 5:22 a.m. and had nearly a dozen aftershocks, including two measuring 4.6 about three hours later. Melilla government president Juan Jose Imbroda said 15 people were treated for minor injuries, mostly bruises and cuts. He put the low number of injuries down to the fact that the

quake took place before dawn and most people were indoors. There was one fatality though in neighbouring Morocco where a 12-year-old boy died of a heart attack brought on by a panic attack as a result of the quake. The tremor was felt across southern parts of the Spanish mainland including Almeria, Malaga, and Sevilla.

A parked vehicle was spotted ablaze in the street A 35-year-old hooded man who threatened a cashier at a service station between Almoradi and Dolores, returned there just minutes later unmasked to ask for some petrol in a can because his car had run out of fuel! The incident happened on Tuesday January 19th, but details were only made public at the end of last week, with

the Guardia Civil making an arrest. The man waved a gun and got the lone station assistant to hand over the takings from the CEPSA station on the Tuesday evening. The cashier pressed a security button during the robbery, and then astonishingly the skimasked bandit returned shortly afterwards but with-

out his disguise. He calmly asked for a plastic canister of fuel as his getaway vehicle had run dry but the cashier recognised his voice from the earlier incident and told him that the Guardia were coming, and they duly arrived and arrested him. The gun was recovered from his car and was found to contain blank bullets.

The National Police arrested a 52 year-old man and his two sons, aged 32 and 29, for running the scam from

their El Campello home. Officers believe that at least 36 other people were set to be swindled and discovered 60 packets of salt at two addresses that were set for dispatch as a cheap replacement for high end electrical stock. Authorities say the trio used a fraudulent web domain address which was very similar to that of an established electronical dealer.

Vanishing Act Orihuela Local police stopped a burglary at a Zeniamar urbanisation property last week when they got an early morning call that somebody was trying to break in. A patrol arrived on the scene with the thief speeding away in a British-registered Volkswagen Touareg which collided with a Mercedes car. Fuel Row

A man’s gone on trial accused of threatening to blow up an Alicante City petrol station last April. The incident happened at an outlet on Avenida de Noveldawith the accused cutting a tube at a petrol pump with a knife, and holding a lighter next to it whilst uttering the words, “Allah is great”. The incident apparently hap-

pened when his custom was refused when he wanted to fill up a bottle. The chances of an explosion were remote anyway as the slashing of the tube instigated both a manual and automatic fuel cut-off from the pumps. National Police agents dragging him away kicking, screaming, and biting. The defendant denies the charge.

Pervert Nicked

A 36-year old man who exposed himself to children in the Alicante City area has been detained by the National Police. The pervert had been on the police radar since the autumn as he would hide out near schools before exposing his

genitals to the youngsters and then making his escape in a car. Cops caught him last week as he was staking out another school, and then they discovered various computers at his house with child pornography on them.

Tourist Fells Cyclists

A group of professional cyclists were mown down by a British tourist driving on the wrong side of the road in Alicante Province on Saturday, but luckily none of them suffered any life-threatening injuries. The incident happened in Benigembla in the Marina Alta area, some 50 kilometres from Benidorm. German sprint specialist John Degenkolb had to have surgery to repair a deep cut on his leg and also suffered a fractured forearm as he and five other Giant-Alpecin teammates were hit by the car whilst they were training. "Given the circumstances, I am fine," Degenkolb wrote on his Facebook page. Warren Barguil, Chad Haga, Fredrik Ludvigsson,

Ramon Sinkeldam and Max Walscheid were also taken to Alicante General Hospital and were said be in a stable condition. "They are lucky to be alive," said Degenkolb's agent Jorg Werner. According to a team statement, Frenchman Barguil suffered a fractured scaphoid that may require surgery. American Haga was airlifted to hospital and underwent successful surgery on neck and chin wounds with an orbital fracture to be treated once the swelling around his eye recedes. "In addition to the serious injuries, he also suffered many contusions and abrasions across his body," Haga's mother said in a Facebook post. "The doctor said it was a

very bad crash and he will be sore for weeks." German Walscheid is also likely to need surgery on a fractured hand and tibia. Meanwhile, Ludvigsson and Sinkeldam suffered cuts and bruises. "It has been a very tough day for the team and the riders will need time to recover," said team CEO Iwan Spekenbrink. The driver of the SUV car was an unnamed English woman who was on the wrong side of the CV-720 road when the accident occurred, according to the emergency services. In 2012, Spanish cyclist Victor Cabedo was killed after being run over on a training run in Almedijar near Valencia.

Two Romanians who would rob elderly people in the Santa Pola area by giving them a hug in the street and then stealing from them have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. A 23-year old man and a 22 year-old woman are accused of using the old trick of stopping mainly elderly victims in the road and asking them for directions. When they got a reply, one of them would hug their mark in gratitude whilst the other would snatch any jewellery or cash they could before beat a hasty retreat. In one instance, they spread their wings south to Guardamar, and sped off in a car which hit a number of other vehicles as they escaped. An Elche judge is in charge of the investigation with further arrests not being ruled out.

A British man was arrested by the Guardia Civil and put before a judge on Monday after confessing to strangling his wife with a phone charger cord a row at their Mallorca flat last weekend. Warren Lyttle, 50, admitted the crime during an early morning phone call to emergency services last Saturday morning, but told the judge that it was a sex game that had gone wrong. Paramedics and local police found marks on Lisa Jane Lyttle's neck when they arrived at the scene, with Mr. Lyttle offering no resistance when he was arrested and taken to the police station at Son Rapina, not far from his house in Costa de la Calma,Lyttle has lived in Mallorca for around a decade but his wife lived between Britain and Spain, investiga-

tors said, and Lisa had been on the island as part of a week’s stay. The Mirror newspaper reported a source as saying: "Warren Lyttle told the judge his wife died during a sex game.He also claimed she had proposed the roleplay he says led to her death He confirmed in court he had confessed to killing her in the phone call he made on Saturday morning to the emergency services, but told the judge it was an accident and things just got out of hand." The paper added that Warren's mother said there appeared to be no problems in the couple's marriage, while Lisa Jane's family said they had a "turbulent" relationship.A post-mortem on Saturday revealed Lisa died from asphyxia due to strangulation.

On Parade A Spaniard who was convicted of driving without a license has been given a novel penalty by a Galicia judge, in that rather than being fined or given six months behind bars, he has to be available at the drop of a hat to take part in police identity parades. He's been given a nine month order that starts in March where he could be called in at any moment during the day between Monday and Thursday for parade duty if he bares any resemblance to the suspect that will be

taking part. The A Coruña court was able to hand out the punishment as part of a new set measures approved by the country's justice ministry

which allows involvement in identity parades to be considered as community service. Spain has always faced difficulty in attracting volunteers for such parades.

A Good House Clean Out

A house cleaner offered more than a quick dusting when she worked in various properties around the Alicante area. She, with the help of her husband, are accused of topping up her earnings by stealing large amounts of money plus jewellery worth around 20 thousand euros from some of the homes she worked at.

The 37-year-old woman and her 50-year-old husband, both of whom are Bolivian, were arrested by the National Police, who acted on complaints from three of her employers who noticed that items and cash had gone missing. The authorities then recovered a treasure trove of items when they raided her house.

Bar Irlanda on Calle Canalejas has been the subject of a stream of complaints by residents over the last 18 months to the local police and the council.

Two San Miguel de Salinas groups have called for action after they claim some ten hectares of woodland was cleared illegally in the vicinity of the La Zafra finca. Government officials and members of the Guardia Civil environment division, Seprona, are investigating what has happened in an area that is an important owl nesting area as well possessing some rare plants grown in the gypsum soil as well as Iberian archaeological site. Two Santa Pola-based Guardia Civil officers are accused of being part of an elaborate fake driving license scam that targeted mainly non-Spaniards. Five people are facing court in Alicante with prosecutors calling for a total of over 17 years in jail between them. The sophisticated scam operated in the summer of 2011 with three people, including the alleged leader of the group who posed as a policeman and another who was a bogus Trafico officer, attracting people who needed to get a Spanish driving license and charging them 100 euros each time for the service. The two Guardia officers were allegedly part of the scheme in getting personal information off computer databases with some of the applicants having to visit

them in person at their Santa Pola barracks. Some fifteen hundred euros was claimed to have been extorted with matters coming to a head when a man in the Murcia region town of Alcantarilla called in the authorities when he was being threatened at home by some of the gang over the non-payment of twelve hundred euros over obtaining a lorry driving license. The two Guardia agents are said to have visited the man's house, along with the gang leader, demanding payment as well as saying that they would seize his van if he did not cough up. Five men face fraud and extortion charges after being arrested in 2012, with the Guardia officers facing up to three years suspension and fines of up to eight thousand euros, in addition to possible jail time.

Messy War Benejúzar is the latest local municipality to launch a push against dog dirt fouling local pavements and paths. The council has reminded selfish owners that they face fines of up to 750

convent of Madres Mercedarias de Santiago de Compostela after a claim was filed to the immigration office alleging that the women were being detained against their will.

Two men were arrested in San Javier on a long list of charges early last Thursday morning after a stolen vehicle they were travelling in, collided with a traffic sign on Puertas del Mar as well as hitting a wall on Calle Maestre, where

police tried to stop them, before the duo backed the car into a telephone pole. An Algerian teenager and a 27-year-old Spaniard from Madrid were eventually detained after they got out of the vehicle and were chased on foot, before they

violently tried to resist arrest. Two knives and a brick were some of the items found in their vehicle as they were charged with car theft, robbery, and reckless driving and property damage, amongst other things.

Stop All The Smiling It’s Your Wedding Day! AS I trudged through the persistent rain the other day, an elderly bloke sheltering in a store doorway called me over. Thinking he might be indisposed and requiring assistance, I broke my stride and edged over to him. He raised one shaggy eyebrow and announced: 'Fine weather for ducks, eh?' I could have responded: 'I'm too wet to listen to some tired cliche about the weather.' But, of course, I said nothing of the sort because I'm a nice guy. I simply acknowledged the man's trite comment with an agreeable nod and continued squelching on my way. But I did happen to wonder what it is about my appearance which singles me out and makes me so damned approachable? 'It's probably your attractive appearance,' said Mrs S when I got home. 'Huh?' I said, mystified as I stepped out of my drenched denims and peeled off my sodden socks. 'It's the fact that you tend to smile all the time which immediately puts people at their ease,' Mrs S explained. I shook my head, rainwater spraying in all directions as if from a large hairy dog which has just been bathed. 'But that's simply not the case. I smile constantly because I never know what the hell is going on! 'Indeed, my smiling public persona is a facade for a very bewildered bloke.'

Mrs S shot me a sympathetic yet long-suffering look. 'I already know that, my dear. I was merely explaining to you why you APPEAR to be friendly and affable. 'When the minister asked me all those years ago if I would take you for better or for worse, I suspected even then that it would mostly be the latter scenario.' Mrs S gazed into the middle distance. 'All I asked for when I was young was to be swept off my feet by a knight on a white charger. 'And what did I get? An ordinary Joe who once rode a donkey on Blackpool beach. 'However, despite my early misgivings I did find true happiness. My husband may be an ordinary Joe but he is MY ordinary Joe and I still love him to bits.' I looked fondly into Mrs S's eyes and responded: 'But my name is Dave. Who is Joe?' Mrs S sighed. 'Go put the kettle on, whatever your name is.' Confused but still smiling, I shrugged and retreated into the kitchen to make us a cup of tea. I'd developed an ache across my shoulder blades because I had never before kept up a shrug for so long. Which reminds me. My wedding ceremony was a bit of a pain, too. All was going fine until the minister paused partway through the proceedings. 'Why are you smiling wilfully at me, my son?' he asked. 'Do you think you know the marriage service

better than I do? Is that why you are smirking?' And the miffed minister handed me his prayer book. 'But my smiley manner is not my fault,' I insisted. 'I try to look satisfied all the time because I honestly do not know what is going on.' The soon-to-be Mrs S whipped up her veil. 'Whaddya mean you don't know what's going on? You're marrying me, stupid!' 'I told you he'd try to duck out of it!' shouted my beloved's mother from the front row. 'He's just a smiling ne'er-do-well.' 'May the Lord forgive you!' shouted the lady organist from her ringside stool. 'What have I done now?' I wailed, but still smiling. 'I wasn't talking to you,' said the organist. 'I'm admonishing the minister. I happen to be married to him and he's not yet had his daily bread. He does get irritable when he's hungry.' Somehow the wedding ceremony got back on track and me and the new Mrs fled the building to embark on our new life. My own dear mother called out to me: 'You'll make a fabulous husband but best keep hold of our front door key just in case.' My mother turned to my father. 'And what are you grinning about?' Dad shrugged. 'I always smile when I'm confused. The minister kept calling our David "my son." Well, I thought he was MY son.

'Anyway,' Dad said, changing the subject, 'Whoever's

son he is, I'm glad I brought my brolly -- it's pouring down

out there. Fine weather for ducks, eh?'

Little Interest Support for bullfighting in Spain is continuing to fall with not even one in five Spaniards in favour of the sport, according to an opinion poll. The survey by Ipsos MORI for World Animal Protection showed just 19% of Spaniards aged between 19-65 backing bullfighting, down from one third in 2013. The fall was most significant among younger people, with just seven per cent of 16-24 year old's and 10% of 1634 year old's saying they supported the tradition.

An expanded emergency department at the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela was officially opened this week. The white-coated centre manager, Miguel Elias Fayos, welcomed a parade of politicians (including Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana)

Pig Out Day

La Mata’s Plaza de Encarnación Puchol offered a meat feast last Sunday as the Torrevieja district celebrated the International Day of the Pig for the sixteenth time. Around fifteen hundred kilos of pork

was eaten along with local wines, beer, and bread. Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolón was amongst the local dignitaries that enjoyed another successful pork-led feast in celebration of the animal.

Political Impasse

Spain’s four main party leaders will meet King Felipe for a second time next Monday and Tuesday to see whether any of them can muster enough support to form a government and break a six-week election deadlock. Parties on the right and left have been jockeying for power in the month since the December 20th vote, though none is yet in a position to cement an alliance after the political landscape fragmented at the ballot box. The parties held their first consultations with the king last week. Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who wants his ruling right-wing Partido Popular (PP) to form a ‘grand coalition’ including the Socialist

PSOE party, admitted after meeting the king last Friday that he did not yet have enough backing to seek a parliamentary confidence vote, and declined an offer to form a government. In a statement on Tuesday, the palace said the king would meet Spain’s two newcomer parties, the centrist Ciudadanos and the antiausterity Podemos this coming Monday, followed by the PP and the PSOE on the Tuesday. He will then meet the PP and the second-placed Socialist Party on Tuesday, Feb. Once a candidate seeks the confidence of parliament, a two-month deadline for the formation of a government comes into effect. After that, a new election would be

triggered. But there is no time limit for a party leader to seek a confidence vote, meaning the stalemate could continue until either Rajoy or PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez believe they have enough support to guarantee success in leading a coalition. Chances of a leftist coalition have improved since Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said last Friday he was willing to soften his red lines to negotiate a pact with the Socialists. However, any possible deal is still not a certainty, given the Socialists’ Sanchez would need to agree pacts with several nationalist and pro-independence parties from the Basque region and Catalonia to gain a majority in the 350-seat parliament.

Thousands of people took part in a protest last weekend against the planned closure of Spain's last cigarette factory, the Altadis facility in Logroño, in the northern region of La Rioja. Hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs could go

in an area with little other opportunities for stable employment, and workers who are facing redundancy say they are going to 'fight to the bitter end' against what they call a 'total injustice'. Tobacco consumption in

Spain has fallen steadily over recent years due to the near-doubling of the cost of a packet of cigarettes since 2009 as well the introduction of a smoking ban in enclosed public spaces as well as bars and restaurants.

And what better way than to do it here ! 1st of all I would like to thank the operator who answered our initial call. She explained everything to us to the letter on what we needed to do. She calmed down my hysterical wife and even had her smiling again by time she hung up the call. Within 1 hour we had someone at the house so it was secure enough for us to leave and file our report of the break-in to the police. The compassion showed by the girls in the office was breathtaking. There help and information priceless. The damage was fixed with in a couple of days so as you would never know anything had ever happened. Our claim was closed 10 days after with the money landing in our account the very next day. Stopping Your Dog’s Lunging Walks

Lonely Pups Become Depressed

More than one in four pet dogs in the UK are depressed as a result of living lonely lives, suggests new research. The study suggests more than 2.3 million dogs are routinely left in solitude for five or more hours despite vets advising four hours as the absolute limit. And the research shows 465,000 dogs are never even taken for a walk and, as a result, are at risk of mental health problems. Vets say a daily walk and meetings with other dogs are essential for the well-being of hounds who are naturally sociable animals. Experts say loneliness can lead dogs to developing destructive behaviour, as well as anxiety and frustration. But the latest PDSA Animal Well-Being Report shows 28 per cent of UK

dog owners surveyed believe it is acceptable to regularly leave a dog alone in the house for anything between six and 10 hours at a time. Experts say too many dog owners are allowing their hectic lives to get in the way of providing their pets with their basic needs. PDSA vet Vicki Larkham-Jones, said: “These are very worrying findings and the fact that people think it’s acceptable to leave their dog alone for so long is especially concerning. “Lonely, frustrated dogs may be more likely to demonstrate problem or unwanted behaviour and over 50 per cent of UK veterinary professionals report having seen an increase in dog euthanasia due to behavioural issues in the past two years.”

When you take your furry friend out for a walk, there’s nothing worse when he or she starts to lunge or bark at other dogs, often when they are on a leash. It can actually be a little embarrassing when your usually calm, sociable dog all of a sudden starts lunging, barking and snapping at other dogs with seemingly little provocation. The key in solving the problem lies in identifying the triggers, avoidance, then gradual reintroduction with counter conditioning. Essentially a dog who is “leash reactive” is most likely experiencing some anxiety, fear or discomfort associated with other dogs. The situation is worse on a lead because your dog can’t approach in a safe and relaxed way. The key to understanding why this behaviour occurs is watching dogs approach each other at say a dog park if there is one in your area. Usually they approach in a wide arc, circling and sniffing each other, reading each

other’s body language. The dog that surges up in a straight line, without obeying this ritual is often the one that ends up in arguments. When your dog is on a leash on the footpath, the normal social rules are not allowed. The dogs are approaching in a straight line, usually with direct eye contact. Often unconsciously you tense up on that leash, perhaps even yank on the collar and perhaps even mutter ‘be nice’ in a stern voice, therefore sending the signal that this is indeed a threatening situation. STEP ONE The first stage to try and heal the reactive dog is to avoid the stimulus altogether. Usually the behaviour will get much worse without some work on your behalf. So for the moment, resign yourself to joining the ‘midnight walk club’ and walking your dog when there are no others around. Keep your eyes peeled for other dogs and be prepared to do the ‘wide arc’

around any approaching dogs or cover your dog’s eyes before he sees the other threat approaching. STEP TWO Work out what your dog’s threshold is with other dogs. Do the dogs need to be just a few metres away, or is just seeing one on the other side of the park enough to set him off? For this step it might be useful to ask a friend with a well behaved dog for help. Otherwise just find a spot at a dog park that allows you to be well away from the other dogs, outside of the zone that makes your dog react. Get lots of tasty treats ready and make sure your dog is a little hungry so he is really excited to get those treats. This next stage can take a little while (perhaps even months), so be patient and keep all your training sessions short. If you are using a friend and their dog, find somewhere that allows your friend to walk their dog within sight of yours, then out again (for example use trees or

cars as a barrier). Each time the dog is in view, give a treat and lots of praise. You are aiming to make an association between seeing the dog and getting lots of treats and praise. If you don’t have a friend to help you can do this at the local dog park, just make sure it’s a park where all the dogs will be on leash, in a designated area and you can control the distance between the other dogs and you. STEP THREE Be ready for setbacks and don’t use any form of punishment. Scolding your dog for reacting to other dogs just further cements that negative association he has with seeing dogs and bad things happening. If your dog at any time reacts to other dogs, you are too close and you will need to head further away and start again. Keep all sessions positive, using lots of rewards. Any naughty behaviour should be ignored and taken as a sign that you are progressing to quickly for your dog.

Do You Have An Investment Or Pension, But Not An Adviser?

We talk to many clients who are concerned about the rate of interest that they are receiving from their bank. The future for an interest rate rise remains bleak as Mark Carney, the Bank of England governor has signaled that any rise in the UK interest rate is some way off. A popular investment product in Spain is the Prudential International´s Prudence Bond. Prudential is a household name and serves around 25 million insurance customers worldwide. They have 505 billions pounds of assets under management. Their International Prudence bond has gone from strength to strength and has returned over 5% per annum consistently for the last 5 years. The current bonus rate is 7.3% per annum for the Prufund Growth fund. The fund aims to maximise growth over the medium to long term while helping to smooth the peaks and troughs of investment performance. They do this by paying out regular annual bonuses. This makes the fund a halfway house between the volatility of the stock market and the safety of cash and bonds. Tony Mayes - About Life

Mozzie War Is Vital Despite all the advances of science there are still some appalling diseases which are inflicting mankind. And there is one, called the Zika virus which is particularly cruel. It's spread by infected mosquitoes, and is particularly dangerous to a pregnant woman, because the virus attacks the foetus in the womb, causing horrendous malformations, notably babies being born with small heads and under-developed brains. Life expectancy is extremely limited. The Zika virus originated in Africa but, until 2007, there had been only 20 or so known human cases. In May last year, a case was diagnosed in Brazil and, since then, it has spread rapidly. Around one and a half million people in that country alone have now been infected in just eight months and 14 countries across South and Central America, including Barbados and Mexico, have reported cases. A woman who returned to Texas from El Salvador recently gave birth to a baby affected by the virus and there is concern that native mosquitoes across the southern United States could spread the virus. Three cases have been detected in the UK. Scientists aren't sure why the virus has spreading so

rapidly, but climate change has been suggested. It is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same species that spreads dengue fever. The virus grows in human blood and any other mosquito can then pick it up while biting and transmit it further. That is why it is being spread so rapidly. Symptoms include a mild fever, joint and muscle pain, headache and conjunctivitis. Mosquitoes spread a wide range of diseases including malaria, and if there was an insect which the human race should eradicate, then the mosquito is top of the list. Pity isn't it that so much of the resources of the world are being diverted in worthless ways, like having to deal with all the problems around the world's growing number of war zones and terrorist hot spots. It's appalling to think that in 21st century Britain there can be children existing that are "invisible". But this is what an eight-year-old boy, Dylan Seabridge was. He died from scurvy, unseen by the authorities because he was supposedly being home-schooled. Children's Commissioner Sally Holland has said it was every parent's right to home educate their child if they wished, but

she was concerned some children were "falling under the radar". She said a mandatory home education register and regular meetings with an education specialist would allow parents the freedom to choose the education they wanted, while also letting local authorities provide support when needed. "I don't think home education itself is a child protection worry but we do need to as a society keep our eye on all the children in our community," she added. No. I believe parents should not have the right to self-educate their children unless there was a medical necessity to do so. The danger of children being radicalised, indoctrinated or abused by “not the full shilling” parents is greater than ever before and a sure way of combating this is to make sure that every child goes to school, and while there should regularly be seen by doctors. And there should be no such thing as religious schools, where indoctrination and radicalisation could and does take place. I am sure that when people are told that the richest one percent of the world own as much as the remaining 99 percent, the majority are filled with anger over the

injustice. I am also sure the vast majority would agree that if those richest one percent had much of their assets removed and redistributed among the rest of the world, that world would be a far happier place. Oxfam has made the calculation about the vast gulf between the richest and poorest and the charity has also calculated that the richest 62 people in the world had as much wealth as the poorest half of the global population. This is nothing more than obscene, more so when many of the richest are so obsessed with accumulating more that they admit that everything they do in life is done for the purpose of acquiring even more money. Oxfam has come up with another statistic which will, I'm sure make us all think. If you have cash and assets worth £48,300 you are one of the richest 10 percent in the world, and if you have assets worth £533,000 or more you are in the top one percent! That means that the vast majority of people living in the Western world is in the top 10%. Consider yourselves lucky! Here's an example of Britain becoming increasingly paranoid about Muslims and terrorism. A 10-year-old Muslim boy

attending an English lesson mistakenly wrote that he lived in a terrorist house. The teacher reported what was written to the head, who in turn reported it to the police who immediately went to the house to investigate. The family's laptop was examined and parents were interviewed. Finally the police were satisfied it was all a mistake and the boy had really meant to write he lived in a terraced house and not a terrorist house. What is the world coming to when we're reduced to such nonsense? I have a dislike for beards, moustaches and designer stubble, considering them as more often than not scruffy, and people just have them because they are too lazy to shave. Such growths have also been considered as dirty and harbouring germs with most women in the recent past preferring their men to be clean shaven. But it seems that far from beards being dirty, they could be the breeding grounds for new bacteria capable of killing other bugs. The TV show “Trust Me I'm a Doctor” carried out a ground-breaking experiment to determine just what is growing in people's beards and they discovered a bacteria which appeared to be

producing a novel form of antibiotic – as in a test tube it was seen to be killing other bugs around it. With more bugs being resistant to antibiotics and the need to find new ones to fight diseases, this discovery could be significant. Who knows? The answer to discovering new antibiotics to fight super-bugs that are becoming resistant to conventional antibiotics and a curse in hospitals, could be growing in men's beards. Amazing! Do you remember way back, when we were kids, that the likes of WagonWheels, and chocolate bars were man-sized? Then manufacturers started to reduce their size - so much so that they were an apology of what they were before, yet they were priced the same! Well, they're at it again Unilever is reducing its Ben & Jerry's tubs and Feast ice creams and others whose portion size will shrink. The excuse is to produce single serving portions of no more than 250 calories - all, of course on the altar of allowing us to "make healthier choices". Is that the motive, or is it trying to make extra profits? I'll let you provide that answer - but I bet the price doesn't go down to reflect the smaller sizes.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

An acid test of how long a scripted drama or comedy may run for often comes down to the quality of a second series, after a successful first series. Many shows have gone down the pan over the years after the ideas have quickly fizzled out, especially those from America. I now bring you Gotham, running on Channel Five, which has done the reverse and become much better than the heavily anticipated first series. Channel Five shelled out the best part of half a million quid per episode to get the rights, but though at times interesting last year and quite watchable, it didn't live up to the hype with far too much going on, and at times not enough humour and links to the old Batman heritage. Series two is almost like a different show and much more fun based on the first few episodes, with just two main plots. Detective Gordon has become Commissioner Gordon and is fighting a gang of baddies including a hilarious and psychotic youth-

Gotham Finds Its Feet

ful Joker, whilst we have the parallel plot of young Bruce Wayne in effect discovering what will be the Batcave, helped by his servant, Arthur. If you gave up on series one, get into this second run because Gotham now is the real deal. Carnival Films have made a name for themselves making a little show called Downton Abbey and then producing the exciting historic drama, The Last Kingdom (back in early 2017). For Sky One, they've now

taken a story specially written by the Marvel superhero guy, Stan Lee, called Lucky Guy, with James Nesbitt playing a London copper who's up to his neck in gambling debts. His luck turns when he discovers a copper bracelet on his arm, thanks to a mysterious woman who he had a onenight stand with, and amongst many things, the guy he owed his gambling debts to, gets murdered. There's more gloss in this hour than you'd get from a

Vera Returns This Week

Brenda Blethyn Brenda Blethyn returns this week for a sixth series of ITV’s popular crime drama Vera. International award winning actress Brenda Blethyn, OBE, makes a welcome return as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in the sixth series of the popular crime drama produced by ITV Studios. Set in contemporary Northumberland and Newcastle, Brenda is reunited with co- stars Kenny Doughty, Cush Jumbo, Jon Morrison, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lisa Hammond and Riley Jones in four new stand-alone films; Dark Road, Tuesday’s Child, The Moth Catcher and The Sea

Glass. Other actors joining them across the series include; Sharon Duce, Kelly Gough, Faye Marsay, Sean Gilder, Tanya Franks, Melanie Kilburn, Jack Ellis, Chanel Cresswell, Alex Ferns and David Calder. Inspired by the best selling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves. DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) investigates the mysterious murder of a fifty six year old grandmother, discovered by a young girl on the wild and desolate Northumberland moors. The body is swiftly identified as Anne-Marie Richards, recently returned from Scotland to reconcile

with her two daughters, Nicole McKendrick (Kelly Gough) and Christine Withers (Faye Marsay). A 999 call placed by AnneMarie on the night of the murder coupled with the disturbed state of her cottage, suggests a possible abduction by someone she knew. The fractious relationship between Anne-Marie and her family rouses Vera’s suspicion; could an old feud be motive for murder? But who is posting abusive comments about her online? What is her connection to a Newcastle businessman and why has she been paying regular visits to a run down town on the coast? As Vera questions the local community, she discovers that Anne-Marie was a divisive figure, no stranger to controversy or conflict in her colourful past. Aided by DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty), DC Bethany Whelan (Cush Jumbo) and DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison), Vera must use all her tenacity and instinct to uncover the dark truth at the heart of the matter, with devastating and far reaching consequences for her team.

tin of Dulux and it ticks the boxes for entertainment, even though I was mouthing some of the predictable script seconds before the cast did. Nesbitt of course excels and the London locations add to the likely international appeal and sales for this show. Stan Lee's name pops up as executive producer on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and like with Gotham, this enjoyable fare has substantially improved on the first season, and based on the

opening episodes of series three, on its new UK home of E4, it now bristles with its own found confidance rather than a wrongly promoted view over two years ago that it was almost some kind of extension of the Marvel movies. Seven series in, the quality of The Good Wife continues to be high as this legal drama laced with humour returned to More Four last night. The probability is that this is likely to be the last run for a show that has surprised

over the years with plot turns and reinventions which have kept things fresh, and it was nice that the opener piled on the lines that made you smile in one of the very few US network shows (as opposed to those on satellite from HBO or Showtime) that ooze in class. Staying Stateside, I'm keenly watching the last ever run (after 15 years) of American Idol over on Channel Four's music channel, Four Music. I always regarded Idol as the best of the singing shows, and though its ending due to lower ratings, I'd suggest that Simon Cowell (who of course made his name on it as a judge) ought to give it a view to check out the warmth and fun that still exudes on Idol as opposed to the negative bearpit of The X Factor these days, which I suggest has caused UK audiences to get bored with it. Ex-host Dermot O'Leary certainly thought so in a very good critique of it in a recent Radio Times interview.

Penelope Wilton to star in Brief Encounters

Penelope Wilton Penelope Wilton, Sophie Rundle, Angela Griffin and Sharon Rooney are to star as four women striving to find happiness and fulfilment in new ITV drama Brief Encounters. The new frank, fresh and funny six-part drama from CPL Productions set in the early ‘80s also stars Peter Wight, Don Gilet, Karl Davies and Ben Bailey Smith. Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders, Dickensian, Happy

Valley, Episodes) will play Steph who feels invisible until Ann Summers party planning comes into her life. It ignites the ambition she didn’t know she had and grows her confidence. Married to Terry, played by Karl Davies (Emmerdale, Happy Valley) and with a young son, Steph strives to make something extra of her life via new friendships and the excitement of this new career. Penelope Wilton

(Downton Abbey, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) plays Pauline. Pauline jumps in at the deep end when Steph, her cleaner, introduces her to the parties as a way to salve her loneliness. Pauline‘s sunny disposition hides a secret sadness. She and her husband, local butcher Brian, played by Peter Wight (Our Zoo, The Paradise) deeply love each other but their relationship has suffered whilst he’s concentrated on building his

business. Through her relationship with the Ann Summers girls, Pauline steps out from the shadows. Angela Griffin (Lewis, Mount Pleasant, Waterloo Road) plays Nita. Nita and Steph have a chance meeting in the school playground that kick starts a sequence of events that will change both their lives. Nita is a mix of grit and warmth, struggling to run a household with a husband, played by Don Gilet (EastEnders, Holby City, 55 Degrees North) whom she adores but who frequently strays onto the wrong side of the law, despite his devotion to his family. Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary, Hector) stars as young hairdresser, Dawn who has a lust for life. Although bubbly and outgoing, since her mother died she has been trapped, looking after her father and three brothers who all take her for granted. The buzz of earning serious cash with the other women gives her the incentive to finally realise

her dreams with fiancé, Russell, the butcher’s apprentice played by Will Merrick (Skins). Produced by BAFTA award winning indie CPL Productions, Brief Encounters is created and written by Fay Rusling and Oriane Messina (Green Wing, Me & Mrs Jones), and executive produced by CPL’s Arabella McGuigan and Danielle Lux alongside the writer-creators. The producer is Jo Willett (Making of a Lady, Birds of a Feather) and the directors are Jill Robertson (Grantchester, Last Tango in Halifax), Marek Losey (Vera, Beowulf) and Joss Agnew (Mr Selfridge, Jekyll & Hyde) Brief Encounters has been commissioned for ITV by Director of Drama Steve November and Head of Drama Series Jane Hudson. “Brief Encounters is a refreshingly different domestic drama taking us back to the wonderful world of the 1980s,” said Steve. “We’re really excited by this commission - it's full of

heart, story and great new characters and we're very much looking forward to working with Danielle Lux, Arabella McGuigan and their production team at CPL.” Executive Producer Arabella McGuigan commented: “We’re delighted to have on board such a wonderful, inspiring cast to bring Brief Encounters boldly to life. Our four central female characters, their associated menfolk, mothers and friends are strong, relatable, surprising and funny and they’ll leap off the page in the hands of our stars. We can’t wait to see the first results.” CPL’s managing director Danielle Lux said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be producing our first drama for ITV. CPL takes great pride in producing television with heart and soul and Brief Encounters has that in spades.” To a soundtrack from the era, Brief Encounters will commence filming this week in Sheffield.

Controller of BBC Comedy Commissioning, Shane Allen, has announced three brand-new 30-minute specials for the Comedy Playhouse season on BBC One. Before being revived last year, the Comedy Playhouse strand ran from 1961 to 1975. During that time, it spawned series spinoffs including Steptoe & Son, Are You Being Served? and Last Of The Summer Wine. Shane says: “The rich legacy of the Comedy Playhouse strand is indicative of the BBC’s commitment to back fresh and original ideas in a mainstream space. Ultimately, the audience decide on what they want to see more of, and these three very distinctive shows have great talents at the heart of them. Go easy, they’re like a new next door neighbour - you can learn to love them in time.” The titles of the one-off specials are Hospital People, Broken Biscuits and Stop/Start. Hospital People Hospital People is a mockumentary set within the fictional Brimlington General Hospital. Comedian Tom Binns plays multiple characters, including deluded radio DJ Ivan Brackenbury, ambitious hospital manager Susan Mitchell, spiritualist porter Ian D Montfort, overenthusiastic priest Father

Stop/Start Stop/Start is a studio sitcom about three marriages in various states of disrepair, written by and starring Jack Docherty. David and Georgy have just moved in next door to Rob and Cathy, putting the cat amongst the pigeons. Executive Producer, Steven Canny, says: “Stop/Start is a big, bold, funny show with an outstanding cast, and it develops a genuinely unique relationship with the audience both in the studio and at home. Fog brings transport chaos Dense fog - the worst for seven years - has brought road, rail and air transport in many parts of England and Wales to a virtual standstill. London has been worst affected - but many areas of the Midlands, East Anglia, southern England and east and south Wales have also been shrouded in fog and frost for most of the day. In 1952, London suffered from what became known as The Great Smog - fog intensified by thick smoke. More than 2,000 people died in the week ending 6 December mostly from chest and lung-related illnesses. The Meteorological Office is predicting the latest "smog" will persist during the next 24 hours in the London area and possibly in some parts of South Wales, Birmingham and the industrial Midlands. An AA spokesman said 28 hours of fog in the capital had left a nil-visibility ring around London. He said: "It is a motorist's nightmare as rush-hour drivers grope their way through nil visibility in the Hendon, Finchley, Northolt, Wandsworth, Bromley and Sidcup districts." Traffic patrols have reported nose-to-tail jams and vehicles travelling at a crawl from all parts of the capital. At least six people were injured in three collisions on the ice-covered Kingston by-pass in Surrey. Phelan, Kevin suggests that it’s time for Anna to forgive and forget. Will Anna take his words on board, or will she decide there’s no future for their relationship? Meanwhile, calling Mary a trollop, Bridget slaps her round the face. As Mary explains how she and Brendan are in love, Brendan arrives and denies all knowledge of their affair - dismissing Mary as one of his weird fans.

Jeanette Erath - Learn Spanish

Revise and Translate Time! We’ve recently been learning how to put everything we have together to make sentences. I´ve been going over various points of grammar as well as leading you through sentence building and structures, now I think it´s time for some revision of what you´ve been learning. So this week is quiz week, and answers next time. Have a go and good luck. We´re going to start with some indirect object pronouns: write the following in Spanish: I like cats, Books by Dickens interest me, Are you missing something?, I enjoy horseback riding and swimming in the ocean, I love to travel, I don’t like

broccoli, I love pizza!, The movie bores me. Looking at negatives, choose the correct word from the four given: Voy a explorar otros países en Europa y no más ver, porque ________ he ido a Europa. A) nunca b) ninguno c) nadie d) nada. Yo soy el campeón mundial. ________ me gana: a) ningún b) alguien c) nadie d) algún.

Now we´re looking at comparatives and superlatives, translate the following into Spanish: my football team is better than yours, today is the coldest day of winter, my brother is taller than me, Jack is the smartest boy in the class,

the train ticket costs more than the aeroplane, the test was easier than I thought, it is the cleanest hotel in the city, they are the naughtiest boys in my road, She is more interesting than me, Jane is shyer than Tom, The Beatles are more famous than Girls Aloud, Chocolate is more delicious than fruit, Maths is the most boring subject, Amanda is funnier than Steve. Now, translate a paragraph from English into Spanish: Winter is a time of holidays around the world: Hanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, to name a few. Different cultures celebrate in different ways, but most

often when people gather to celebrate, they gather to eat. For much of the Christian world, the pinnacle of the holiday season is Christmas dinner. This is a time when families gather together and share a great feast on Christmas Eve, usually after Midnight Mass In the Spanish-speaking world, the Christmas season is celebrated with food as well. In Spain, the Christmas meal is never eaten before midnight. A family feast features Christmas turkey with truffles. For dessert, the Spanish enjoy turron, a candy of roasted almonds in caramel sauce. On Christmas Eve in Mexico,

many people attend church and then return home for a big feast of turkey, chicken, tamales, fruit tea and plenty of sweets. As with most Mexican celebrations, a piñata is part of the Christmas party. Children try to break the piñata to gather the candies, fruit and toys inside. I hope that your holiday celebrations were festive. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2016. Have a go at everything and see how you get on. Remember that unless you are looking to pass exams your Spanish doesn´t have to be perfect, far better to just get out there and give it a go. Enjoy the language, and I´ll be back with the answers next week.

Test drive for TV detector vans A new method for tracking down users of unlicensed television sets has been unveiled in the UK. The first TV detector van was demonstrated in front of Postmaster-General, Lord De La Warr and Assistant PostmasterGeneral Mr Gammans. The detection equipment was developed at short notice at the radio experimental laboratories of the Post Office in Dollis Hill, London. The units consist of three horizontal loop aerials fixed to the roof of a van which receives signals from TV sets and converts them to radio waves to give audio and video information. Its inventors insist the system is sensitive enough to pick up the vast majority of television receivers, whether the aerial is external or internal. Detector vans will pass slowly along roads and will be able to pin-point where receivers are in use. TV detection officers will make doorstep inquiries as they go along. According to Post Office estimates there are between 100,000 and 150,000 people watching television without a licence. Lord De La Warr said people without licences were receiving free entertainment subsidised by those who had paid.He said he was determined to discover who the non-payers were, although he was sure many people had simply forgotten to get their licence.

She urges Kush to just be honest and be a part of his son’s life. When Kush protests, Shabnam announces that she’s leaving him.

Sid Vicious dies from drugs overdose Sex Pistols' bass player Sid Vicious has died of a heroin overdose in New York. His mother, Anne Beverley, found him dead in bed with his sleeping girlfriend in an apartment in Greenwich Village this morning. There had been a party in the flat to celebrate Mr Vicious' release on $50,000 bail yesterday pending his trial for the murder of his former girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, last October. The precise details of his death are unknown but party guests say Sid Vicious - real name John Simon Ritchie - took some heroin at midnight. His mother, once a registered addict, said: "He knew the smack was pure and strong and took a lot less than usual." Shortly after taking the drug Mr Vicious, 21, collapsed, went into seizure and displayed the symptoms of overdose. He revived 40 minutes later and went to bed with his girlfriend, Michelle Robinson, at about 0300 local time. The first police officer on the scene later in the morning was Robert Zink who discovered "a syringe, a spoon and what is probably residue near the body." The troubled punk musician - renowned for his violent behaviour - had been on a detoxification, methadone programme in prison, but he had developed a £40 a day habit since meeting Miss Spungen last year. of treatment. Guy refuses to operate on her spine if her heart might rupture, but Ollie won’t operate on her chest if her spinal chord is at risk. Bernie interrupts and suggests they both operate at the same time - but neither is keen on the idea, with Guy hinting Ollie isn’t up to the job! Can they keep it civil to ensure the patient’s best outcome?

In Emmerdale, Chas is thrown when Aaron explains that he doesn’t want to tell the police about Gordon. Defiant seamen strike on Thousands of seamen at major British ports are continuing to strike even though their union has called an end to the action. The National Union of Seamen (NUS) backed down in the High Court this morning after a three-day stoppage, which has stifled seafaring trade and transport in the UK. But 3,000 ferry men at Dover, Harwich and Portsmouth are refusing to return to work and have shifted their protest to local concerns. Tailbacks of up to 300 freight lorries are clogging roads to the ports. The NUS called a national strike last Sunday (31 January) in support of the 161 crew sacked by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for refusing to accept new terms and conditions. The strike was hailed as a success by the union when fifty ships were prevented from sailing from 12 ports around the country, stopping all British sea traffic to the Continent, Ireland and the Scottish islands. By Tuesday Mr Justice Kennedy had granted injunctions to seven ferry companies ordering the NUS to stop its action.

Meanwhile, the trading standards agents check the wine. They soon make an announcement and Pollard worries. Can Pollard find himself a solution?

Later, Shirley and Denise both wait in the prison room. When Dean arrives he is pleased to see his mum, but how will he react when she urges him to do the right thing and plead guilty?

Elsewhere, Jimmy is concerned when Rakesh says that Charity wants him to review the business accounts. Nicola smells a rat as Jimmy fobs Rakesh off over the books. Nicola pales when she learns that Jimmy hasn’t kept up with the books since Charity

At the same time, Denise comes face-to-face with Lucas and it’s clear that she still has strong feelings for him. Lucas starts to reel Denise back in with his fears about Jordan, telling her that she is the only one who can save them both.

In Eastenders, Buster doesn’t want Shirley to visit Dean, so he asks Denise to talk some sense into her. When the two women talk, Denise opens up about Lucas and how

Cocktail Recipies For Valentine’s Day What's more romantic than mixing your sweetheart an elegant cocktail on Valentine's Day? To turn up the saccharine sentimentality to 11, try a holiday-colored drink. We've collected 50 great red and pink cocktails to woo your partner on Valentine's Day. Nothing says romance like champagne. SICILIAN 75 This Campari and blood orange juice concoction from Manhattan's Louro is one of many twists on the classic French 75—a cocktail that rose to prominence after World War I, named after the American slang for the 75-mm field gun. Like its namesake, it's light, but packs a wallop. It first appeared in SAVEUR DRINK Issue #1 with the story "Right on Target." MAKES 1 COCKTAIL Ingredients 1 oz. fresh blood orange juice, plus slice 1 oz. gin 1⁄2 oz. simple syrup

1⁄4 oz. Campari 2 oz. dry champagne Instructions Combine juice, gin, syrup, and Campari in an ice-filled shaker. Shake and strain into a flute. Top with champagne; garnish with orange slice. CANALE TORINO This refreshing aperitif comes from chef Jimmy Bradley, who serves it at his New York City restaurant, The Harrison. MAKES ONE COCKTAIL Ingredients 4 tbsp. Aperol 4 tbsp. Dolan dry vermouth 2 tbsp. Luxardo triple sec Twist of orange peel Instructions Fill a cocktail shaker with 2 cups of ice. Pour in Aperol, vermouth, and triple sec; cover and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve with twist of orange peel.

Rice With Fennel, Black Garlic And Blue Cheese

The recipe Trim, halve and finely chop 250g of fennel (that’s more or less 1 large bulb), setting aside any fronds. Peel and finely chop 2 cloves of black garlic. They don’t have to be black, but bear with me. Warm 3 tbsp of olive oil in a deep-sided frying pan, then add the garlic and let it cook for a couple of minutes over a low to moderate heat. Stir the chopped fennel into the olive oil then, when you have stirred it a few times and it is beginning to become translucent, tip in 350g of Arborio or other round, risottostyle rice. Make 800ml of vegetable stock. A quick stir, then add 100ml or so of the stock and leave to simmer, stirring regularly,

until most of the liquid has been absorbed by the rice. Add more hot stock and continue in this fashion until all the stock has been used and the rice is approaching softness. A little bite is a good thing. When the rice has taken up most of the stock, check the seasoning, adding salt and black pepper as you wish, then stir in 50g of butter. Spoon on to a couple of shallow bowls or large plates then crumble 100g of blue cheese – I used Shropshire Blue – leaving it to soften and melt over the warm rice. Serves 2. The trick You can cheerfully ignore all the twaddle about black garlic being a “superfood”, but it is an interesting ingredient to

use, introducing a mellow, sweet note that feels right for a wet winter’s day. You don’t have to use it: smoked garlic is fine here, too. We are just after something sweet and mild. I have kept this recipe suitable for vegetarians, but if you use chicken stock in place of the vegetable version you will get a more silky, unctuous texture. The twist Aniseed haters may be interested to know that you could swap the fennel for leeks, letting them cook at a low heat (they mustn’t brown) till soft and translucent, before adding the rice. A large leek, shredded, will be enough. Any blue cheese will do the trick, but one that melts well – Stichelton, Stilton, Cashel, etc – is preferable.

Valentine's Day 2016: The Very Best Chocolates Treat your loved one to something sweet with a tried and tested favourite

Chocolates have become as synonymous with Valentine’s Day as flowers. Read on to find out which ones we think are the best of the bunch for this year.

Fear not if your pockets aren’t deep as there are plenty of budget options, as well as high-end decadence for those with more cash to splash. 1. ChoconChoc Perfect Match Chocolates: This witty take on lovethemed chocolates make for a more unusual Valentine's Day offering . Hand-made in Somerset using creamy white Belgian chocolate, these treats taste fabulous. You’ll be relieved to know they are substantially bigger than usual matches – around five times as long and 20 times as thick. The words “Perfect Match” are etched on the side. 2. Godiva Valentine’s Round Gift Box: £20, Godiva

Godiva’s indulgent boxes from its Coupes d’Amour collection are hand-made in Brussels. The so-called “cups of love” come in five melt-in-the-mouth flavours including banana, strawberry, pistachio, caramel café and intense chocolate. 3. Hotel Chocolat Straight from the Heart: Hotel Chocolat has an impressive range of Valentine’s chocolates for all budgets, but our favourite is this array of 35 chocolates and truffles, many of them heart-shaped and with romantic flavour combinations, such as Pink Champagne and Caramel Gianduja. 4. The Chocolate Society Gjanduja Honeycomb Hearts: Filled with delicious milk chocolate, hazelnut gjanduja and shards of hand-made honeycomb, this set of 15 beautifully presented red hearts is ideal for people who like a bit of crunch in their chocolate. They are definitely not to be scoffed and instead savoured in appreciative silence.

5. Cocoapod Personalised Chocolate Squares: Two of these four chocolates can be personalised with initials, while the remaining two feature one of the K e n t based company’s own designs, such as small hearts. The letter squares are hand-made from

Belgian chocolate and the pat-

tern squares are either strawberry and orange or plain, milk or white. 6. Rococo Venus Nipples and Lips: The name is supposed to sound saucy, although we think they sound a bit like the snacks Graham Chapman was selling in the People’s Front of Judea scene in Monty Python’s The Life of Brian. Nevertheless, the four handmade red lips (dark

chocolate covered in handpainted white chocolate) and six venus nipples (coffee truffles covered in white chocolate, with a coffee bean) are astonishingly tasty and look extra-special. 8. Harrods Chocolate Love Bears: We reckon it will be love at first bite with these sweet chocolate bears. Made from rich and smooth Belgian milk chocolate, their hearts are painted – you guessed it – red, and they all come in a see-through box that’s gift wrapped with a neat red ribbon, quite the finishing touch for your loved one.

Pea, Rocket And Mushroom Toasts Recipe The recipe Put a pan of water on to boil, then add 200g of frozen peas and let them cook for 3 or 4 minutes. Drain the peas and tip them into the bowl of a food processor then add 50g of rocket leaves, the juice of half a lemon and the leaves from 10g of tarragon. Blend in 80ml of olive oil to give a smooth, bright green purée, then set aside. Wipe three large portobello mushrooms and slice them into pieces about 2cm thick. Trim 150g of small mushrooms, such as shimeji, leaving the mushrooms whole. In a large shallow pan, warm 4 tbsp of olive oil and 40g of butter over a moderate heat. As it starts to sizzle, add a small clove of garlic, crushed flat, then the mushrooms. Let the mushrooms soften. Season with salt and black

pepper. Toast 2 thick slices of sourdough bread or ciabatta then spread generously with some of the pea purée. Divide the hot mushrooms between the toasts and serve. The trick I suggest using two distinct types of mushroom here – the firm, cheap varieties, such as chestnut and portobello, and then something more tender, such as shimeji or enoki. The former need frying to a deep nutty brown before you add the more fragile varieties. These latter, fine varieties are fragile and should be stirred in only when the firm mushrooms are almost cooked, to preserve their delicate texture. The twist You could introduce some tofu, pancetta or bacon to the sautéed mushrooms. Bacon

and pancetta could be cut into finger-thick strips and fried until golden before adding mushrooms. Tofu

needs adding at the same time, as it only has to warm through and the more tender types will resent being stirred

too much. You could also use frozen broad beans, popped from their skins, instead of the peas.

You Loving Group Vodka Cream Pasta This recipe will make enough for two couples. If you plan a romantic evening where more than two's a crowd, you will have plenty, or you could save the sauce for later Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, once around the pan in a slow stream 1 tablespoon butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 shallots, minced 1 cup vodka 1 cup chicken stock 1 can crushed tomatoes (32 ounces) Coarse salt and pepper 16 ounces pasta, such as penne rigate

1/2 cup heavy cream 20 leaves fresh basil, shredded or torn Crusty bread, for passing Directions Heat a large skillet over moderate heat. Add oil, butter, garlic, and shallots. Reduce vodka by half, this will take 2 or 3 minutes. Add chicken stock, tomatoes. Bring sauce to a bubble and reduce heat to simmer. Season with salt and pepper. While sauce simmers, cook pasta in salted boiling

water until cooked to al dente (with a bite to it). While pasta cooks, prepare your salad or other side dishes. Stir cream into sauce. When sauce returns to a bubble, remove it from heat. Drain pasta. Toss hot pasta with sauce and basil leaves. Pass pasta with crusty bread. Surf and Turf for 2 Ingredients For the Herb Oil: 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper For the Surf and Turf: 6 jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined (tails intact) 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Juice of 1/2 lemon 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme, plus 2 to 3 sprigs Freshly ground pepper

pepper. Transfer to a small bowl, cover and set aside. (This can be done up to 2 hours ahead.) Prepare the surf and turf: Toss the shrimp, olive oil, lemon juice, chopped thyme, and pepper to taste in a bowl. Wrap each shrimp with a piece of pancetta. Preheat the broiler. Arrange the shrimp on a foillined broiler pan. Season the beef with sea salt and pepper, press the thyme sprigs into the meat and set aside. Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus. Put the asparagus in a microwave-safe dish with 1/4 cup water and a pinch of sea salt. Heat a medium ovenproof skillet over high heat and add the butter. When the foam subsides, sear the beef until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Using tongs, hold the meat and brown the sides. Transfer the skillet to the broiler and cook until a thermometer inserted into the

6 slices pancetta (about 2 ounces) 1 10 -ounce piece beef tenderloin, trimmed Sea salt 8 asparagus spears 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Directions Make the herb oil: Pulse the parsley, chives and olive oil in a mini food processor until smooth. Thin with water, if necessary, and add 1/4 teaspoon each salt and

beef registers 125 degrees F for medium rare, about 4 more minutes. Transfer to a cutting board to rest while you cook the shrimp. Broil the shrimp until the pancetta is crisp, about 2 minutes per side. Meanwhile, microwave the asparagus until tender, about 2 minutes. Slice the beef into 4 pieces. Serve with the shrimp, herb oil and asparagus.

Prawns are crustaceans of varying size with sweet, firm, meaty flesh. Once a luxury, they are now considered an everyday ingredient. However there are serious sustainability concerns surrounding them, particularly regarding bycatch that is caught when they are being fished and the way tropical warm-water prawns, such as king and tiger prawns, are farmed. If you enjoy seafood, try exploring other more sustainable varieties, such as mussels and clams. Aim to eat prawns only occasionally and choose certified organic sources of tiger prawns or king prawns. Prawns are available either raw or cooked, in or out of their shells. Cold-water prawns (which are the smaller, more standard prawns) are usually peeled, cooked and frozen on board ships. The most sustainable sources are from the North East Arctic and Canada. Warm-water prawns, such as tiger and king prawns are farmed and it

is best to choose those that are organic or from a certified fishery. This simple recipe for prawns in a garlicky sauce makes a delicious addition to a tapas spread - just add lots of crusty bread. Preparation time less than 30 mins Cooking time less than 10 mins Serves Serves 2-3 Recommended by 20 people Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 50g/2oz butter 12 large raw prawns 2 garlic cloves, crushed salt and freshly ground black pepper small handful parsley, chopped Method In a wok or a large pan heat the oil and butter. Add the prawns and garlic and stir well. Stir fry until the prawns are pink (about 4-5 minutes) Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and scatter the chopped parsley over. Serve at once.

Wiser Cracks In Odd Couple Sequel

DIRECTOR Tim Story GENRE Action, Comedy SYNOPSIS As his wedding day approaches, Ben heads to Miami with his soon-tobe brother-in-law James to bring down a drug dealer who's supplying the dealers of Atlanta with product. Ben rides along James on a 24hour patrol of Atlanta. RELEASE DATE 15 January 2016 (USA) DURATION 101 min RATING PG-13

After striking box office gold to the tune of $135 million in 2014, Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are back as badass cop James Payton and his wannabe brother-inlaw Ben Barber to do it all

over again. And they’re really doing it all over again. Ride Along 2, which moves the action from Atlanta to Miami, plays more like a remake than a sequel. It Kevin Hart and Ice Cube buddy up again in Florida in this money-spinning cop comedy worked the first time, right? Ben is still desperate to prove himself (this time as a detective) to both his future bride (Tika Sumpter) and James, who concocts an intense on-the-job test to scare him off. Eventually, Ben displays his unexpected worth, and together he and James take down an otherwise untouchable crime boss, played this time

by Benjamin Bratt. The films are so note-for-note similar that it’s easy to visualize a split-screen YouTube comparison video, if you can imagine such a horror. Like last time, Hart’s manic energy is just enough to keep the film afloat as it plods from chase scene to stakeout to chase scene while Ice Cube scowls. The most noticeable difference between the two movies—besides a slightly higher laugh count, thanks to Hart as well as Ken Jeong as a criminal hacker—is that Ride Along 2 has the secondary mission of inventing reasons to ogle Olivia Munn, costarring as the Miami detective who

comes to crime scenes straight from the gym, sweaty and still wearing her sports bra. Action comedies must seem like no-brainers for quadrant-minded studios. Audiences like laughs and explosions, so why not have both? In practice, though, hybrid movies typically end up as comedies where the star shoots a gun from time to time. Or it’s the other way around, and the action works but the jokes aren’t quite funny-funny—the obvious exceptions being the 21 Jump Street movies, which makes you think: Shouldn’t Ice Cube know better?

A Paradise Of Freshwater And Sea

Sun and sky, saltwater, hues of pink and green ... This is what you get at the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja, a protected nature reserve consisting of two saltwater lagoons separated by an anticline, known as El Chaparral. The first lagoon is the rosecoloured one, located in the Torrevieja salt flats, in contrast to the deep emeraldcoloured La Mata lagoon. Come and discover this unique aquatic paradise of nature, life and biodiversity. The Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja Interpretation Centre is the starting point for all trips and excursions, and for getting in the know about this particular spot. For those that love relaxed walks, nature and fresh air,

this park really is the perfect option. The Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja, in the Vega Baja del Segura region, fall partly under the administrative area of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Rojales. Together with the natural parks of El Hondo and Salinas de Santa Pola, they form a triangle of wetlands, which are crucial to the development of the lifecycles of many species that use it for migration, nesting and hibernation purposes. The park consists of two lagoons separated together by an anticline known as El Chaparral. A channel connects the two depressions, which are artificially supplied with seawater through two other channels known

as theAcequiones, forming a salt exploitation area. The park covers a total area of 3700 hectares; 2100 of which are covered with water while the remainder consists of the surrounding grasslands. The Torrevieja lagoon covers 1400 hectares and La Mata covers 700. A group of intermittent system watercourses and ravines drain into this basin, especially into the Torrevieja lagoon, due to its proximity to the Sierra de San Miguel de Salinas. The lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja were already in use in 1321, when they were ceded to the Town of Orihuela by the Crown, on the condition that they would not be transferred. Later in 1389, the Crown

itself conceded the possibility of transforming the Torrevieja lagoon to the very same town, for the purposes of exploiting the fisheries. However, the construction of the Acequión connecting it to the sea took almost a century, and the infeasibility of the project was confirmed in 1482, when it transpired that the fish would not enter the lagoon due to the high salinity of the water. Orihuela renounced the royal donation for this reason. A Royal Order in 1759 declared that the area occupied by both lagoons was to be reverted to State property. A few years later, the first salt extraction tests were conducted at La Mata lagoon.

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain eight years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Pat was having problems with suspicious emails ADVICE: Robin wanted to know how to transfer images from his phone using Windows 10 sent to her friends.

Q

Hi Richard, I have had a couple of e-mails from friends saying they have received e-mails from me which appear suspicious and have deleted them. There is no mention of them asking for cash, etc. I have checked your solutions column and found suggestions for greater security for Hotmail and Gmail but not Yahoo mail which I use. I have CC cleaner, Malwarebytes anti malware and AVG which I run twice weekly. As yet I have not been locked out of my account. Please could you help me and let me know if I need to change my e-mail account or if I can just increase security. As you say in your article the thought of being locked out is horrendous. I am prepared to take my security to as high a level as necessary. Hope to hear from you with positive news! Patricia

A

Hi Patricia, in the first instance I would change your email password, make it a secure password with upper and lower case characters, and numbers, if you can also add a symbol to the password. if your friends report that the suspicious emails stop then you know you have it sorted, if not then feel free to come back to me.

Q

Hi Richard. When I was on windows Vista, as soon as I plugged the phone into the USB port, a window automatically opened, saying so many pictures were detected and did I want to transfer them and after transfer, did I want to delete them from the phone. With windows 10 nothing happens - no new window opens, and I have tried typing various things into Bing and Google, to find out how to transfer photos, but they only give instructions to transfer from an I-phone, not a Nokia. Any advice. Thanks, cheers Robin

A

Hi Robin, when you plug in your camera to a Windows 10 machine for the first time it will display a pop up asking how you want to proceed, you should select the option to “import” to copy your images from your camera onto your computer. Your computer should see your Nokia as an external USB media device, if you don’t get the pop up then have a look in Windows Explorer, your phone should appear as a drive under “This PC”.

ADVICE: Terry wanted to know the correct way to print emails from the outlook.com website.

Q

Hi Richard, I have the same problem as Barry, only instead of Gmail, my e-mail is Hotmail (Outlook). How do I print my e-mails without the side bits? Looking forward to hearing from you. Terry

A

Hi Terry, yes it’s a common question, I think Microsoft really dropped the ball when they hid this commonly used menu option. What you need to do is open up the email you want to print and then look at the menu bar at the top, click on the three dots and you will get a drop down menu, just choose print from there, it will open up a new window with your email (and no side bits) in it, from there you will be able to print.

Soft Drink Giants To Cut Sugar Levels - But Coke Stays The Same Contact@medb.es

Food and drink giants such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kellogg’s pledge to cut the sugar content in their products, ahead of The UK’s Government decision on sugar tax Food and drink manufacturers such as Coca-Cola and Kellogg’s are promising to cut the sugar content in their products in advance of a Government decision on levying a sugar tax. Key players in the processed food industry say they will introduce a series of "unprecedented" series of measures of their own volition, which they claim will help reduce Britain’s sugar consumption by a fifth. The measures include promises to avoid targeting the under-16s, as well as introducing smaller, healthier products. However it is thought sugar levels in Coke - with

its slogan 'It's the real thing' - will remain the same. The moves come just days before David Cameron decides whether to press ahead with plans for a controversial sugar tax to help tackle what health experts have described as a time bomb of childhood obesity. It has been estimated a 20 per cent sugar tax could raise up to a £1bn a year. Kellogg's says it will cut 723 tons of sugar next year from all its cereals, such as Frosties and Coco Pops, by 2016 — although it would not specify any proportions. Levels in Frosties and

Coco Pops are about 35 per cent and it is thought they will aim to get them below 2 0 p e r cent.

The makers of Lucozade and Ribena are aiming to cut sugar by ten

per cent by 2018, and 20 per cent by 2025 or sooner. IrnBru's maker AG Barr wants to cut its calorie content by five per cent this year alone. Other soft drink giants such as Pepsi and Britvic will also ban TV adverts aimed at children and billboards near schools will also be scrapped. Smaller sizes and new healthier products are also being promised. Coca-Cola, which owns a range of soft drinks including Lilt and Sprite, is part of an industry-wide pledge to cut sugar consumption by 20 per cent before 2020. But the company — which cut the calories in its drinks by five per cent in 2014 — is

only promising another five per cent drop over the next nine years. And, significantly, it is reported that the seven teaspoons of sugar currently in the Coca Cola’s best selling red 330ml Coke can will stay the same. One senior soft drink industry source said: "The health lobby will say we're not going anywhere near far enough. But if we can cut the nation's calorie con-

sumption from soft drinks by 20 per cent in five years, surely that's a win for everyone?" Campaigners and chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, have led calls for a sugar tax to tackle childhood obesity — with a 20 per cent levy expected to raise up to £1billion a year. A draft of the plan is expected to be circulated by Downing Street officials next week.

Number Of Mental Health Nurses Falls 10% UK Government attacked over ‘shocking’ English figures The number of specialist mental health nurses has fallen more than 10% over the past five years, the Guardian has learned, putting the care of rising numbers of patients at risk. The loss of one in 10 of the entire mental health nursing workforce in

England has occurred mainly in hospitals and mental health units treating some of the sickest patients, official NHS figures show. Figures from the NHS’s health and social care information centre, obtained through a parliamentary question, show that the num-

ber of qualified nurses working in psychiatry dropped by 10.8% from 41,320 in 2010 to 36,870 in 2015. While the number working in community psychiatry services has fallen only slightly from 15,986 to 15,826, those listed as working in “other psychiatry” – mainly hospital units – went down from 25,334 to 21,044. Can call centre therapy solve the NHS mental health crisis? Fast-track treatment aims to ease growing problem in the UK, but critics say it is the clinical equivalent to online dating “These shocking figures raise serious concerns about the future of our mental health services,” said

Luciana Berger, Labour’s shadow minister for mental health. “At a time when there is growing demand and staff are being asked to do more for less, cuts to the number of nurses working in mental health are completely unacceptable.” The sudden drop comes at time when more and more people are seeking mental health treatment from the NHS. Official figures show that the number of people in contact with NHS mental health services has surged by as much as 40% over the same period. The number of specialist mental health nurses has fallen more than 10% over the past five years, the Guardian has learned, putting the care of rising

numbers of patients at risk.

I Feel Well, But My Cholesterol Is High Contact@medb.es

A lot of people have had the experience of feeling well during a visit to their GP, only to be told after a routine blood test that they have high cholesterol and need medications. You may believe like many people that cholesterol is a danger to your health, but nothing can be further from the truth. Cholesterol was considered a danger to health in the mid-1980s based on the findings of a single scientific study, a study that has since been rejected for lack of evidence. Medical students learn that cholesterol is one of the most important nutrients in the body. For a start,

the presence of cholesterol is what differentiates animals from plants. Plants do not contain cholesterol. Your brain craves cholesterol so m u c h that half of the weight of the brain is cholesterol. For this reason, cholesterol lowering medications are notorious for causing brain-related problems such as depression, memory loss,

irritability more so than in nerves in

Website: www.medb.es

and aggression, in some people others. All the the body

are protected by a sheath made from cholesterol. Your body cannot produce hormones without cholesterol. The

digestive and immune systems rely heavily on cholesterol to function properly. Lowering cholesterol is quite simply bad science. We will look back ten years from now and wonder how it all started. Cholesterol increases in the body due to some factors, but always to protect the body. If your organs are inflamed, your body will produce a lot of cholesterol to counter the inflammation. If you have suffered from stress or any chronic disease, your body will also produce a lot of cholesterol to produce hormones and other chemicals to heal your body and mind. Today, the normal value for cholesterol is 5.5 mmol/l (220 mg/dl) which is much lower than what it was in the 1980s when the normal was between 5- 8.5 mmol/l (200 - 330 mg/dl). Many researchers believe that the higher past values are more appropriate than today's values. Critics of cholesterol-lowering drugs have wondered whether the incentive for lowering cholesterol is the

over 100 billion dollars made by the pharmaceutical industry every year from sales of cholesterol lowering medication. If you are told that your cholesterol is high, you should wait a few months and then repeat the test, while you work on your diet by eliminating veg-

etable oils, processed foods and wheat. If still high (above 6.5 (250 mg/dl) you can take plant based cholesterol lowering agents that regulate cholesterol rather than stop its production. For a full body, scan call MedB Diagnostic Clinic: 965071745, 966189074.

Concern Grows In Travel Industry Over Zika Virus

The travel industry is coming under increasing pressure as concerns grow about the risk to travellers from the Zika virus. United Airlines said it was allowing customers who had reserved tickets for travel to areas affected by the disease to postpone their trips or obtain refunds without incurring penalties. Cruiser operators Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd and Carnival Corp said they would allow expectant mothers heading to countries covered by

warnings on the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website to reschedule their trips to a later date. The moves come as it emerged that one person in Denmark tested positive for the Zika virus after returning from a holiday in South and Central America and there were reports cases had also emerged in Switzerland. Thomson and First Choice Holidays' website currently mentions the risk of Zika to mothers who are

already pregnant but failed to state that women trying to get pregnant should also check travel advice to affected areas. When attempting to book, Thomas Cook refers travellers to the Foreign Office website, without making it clear that pregnant women or those wanting to conceive could be at risk. But the firm says it is “contacting all customers due to travel to Mexico, Barbados, Dominican Republic and Cape Verde

up to and including 30th of April 2016 to advise them of the situation and offer assistance if required”. The Foreign Office last week updated its advice to travellers to Mexico and 21 other South and Central American and Caribbean countries, for women who are “pregnant or planning to become pregnant”. The advice was to avoid “travel to areas where ZIKV outbreaks are currently reported” if pregnant and “if you are planning to become pregnant, you should dis-

cuss your travel plans with your healthcare provider” to assess the risk. More than 400,000 Britons travelled to Mexico last year, many on honeymoon, and hundreds of thousands more visited some of the other affected areas. Danish health authorities said the patient from Denmark travelled to South and Central America where the disease has taken hold. Three UK travellers have so far been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease for which there is no vaccine. The Britons travelled in Colombia, Suriname and Guyana, although it is not clear whether they have returned to the UK or if any of the three are pregnant women. The condition prevents babies’ brains from developing properly and six people have so far tested positive for the virus in Hawaii, although all are understood to have been infected outside the US. Last week a baby born with microcephaly in Hawaii became the first newborn to test positive for the Zika virus on US soil. It is under-

stood the mother contracted the virus while in Brazil. A World Health Organisation travel alert applies to: Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Suriname, US Virgin Islands, Venezuela. Some confusion appears to remain about whether it is generally safe to travel to the affected areas. One American traveller, Joanne Maier Bevan said on Facebook: “(We) are suppose to travel to Mexico in February. Would travel insurance cover us for not wanting to go now? I wouldn’t want to be the one who brings this virus to the United States.” Hannah Chapman, who had booked a holiday through Thomson, said on Twitter: “WHO lists many other countries such as Dominican as having the virus too. We are trying to change!”

VW Rejects Call To Compensate EU Drivers

European carmakers have pleaded for time and understanding after the European Parliament announced a special inquiry into the Volkswagen emissions scandal that erupted last year. A cross-party committee of 45 MEPs will spend 12 months examining how VW was able to rig emissions

BMW has decided that Audi and Merc have had it their own way for too long in the premium super-hatch segment. Its answer? The new M2 Coupe. This is aimed at a younger audience that traditionally buy M cars. A younger audience who can spend 50,000€, but a younger audience. Fewer than 500 models are earmarked for the UK. Two years after the car on which it’s based was launched, the M2 has the Audi RS3 firmly in its sights. With the M division’s reputation for producing brilliantly balanced, agile and searingly fast rear-wheel-drive performance cars, this new M2 Coupe is set to be a worthy competitor. As if to prove the point, the vehicle’s launch control programme will offer a funfilled Smoky Burnout function. Away from the police station car park, BMW says the M2 will be at home on the track as much as the road. With 370bhp and 343lb ft of torque from its turbocharged 3.0-litre six-pot,

tests with so-called “defeat devices” – software that cosmetically cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) exhaust emissions during regulators’ examinations. It will also look at whether the German car company was given political cover by the European Commission and national governments in the EU.

But Dieter Zetsche, the chairman of Daimler and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said that the industry was committed to cleaner cars. “Let me be clear: we fully accept our responsibility to bring down emissions,” he said in Brussels. “But rushing new measures will fail to bring the intended results.”

Mr Zetsche – who is also the president of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) – blamed the scandal on the vague testing requirements. “We recognise what has gone wrong,” he added. “By definition, by physics, you get more emissions by full acceleration and

a full load, at low temperatures and climbing a hill, than on a flat autobahn.” Up to 11 million VW diesel vehicles worldwide are thought to have been fitted with software to mask NOx emissions. The European Parliament’s inquiry will also look into whether governments knew about the defeat devices before the scandal emerged and why there were no defined penalties in place to deter such cheating. “Something has gone badly wrong and I hope this committee will find out why EU law has not been upheld,” said Guy Verhofstadt, the former Belgian prime minister, who heads the parliament’s Liberal group. The French centre-right MEP Françoise Grossetête was more conciliatory, saying: “This inquiry should not turn into an inquisition court, but instead come up with ideas for solutions.” NOx, common in diesel exhaust, is carcinogenic component of smog and contributes to climate change.

BMW M2 Coupe Revealed

it certainly shouldn’t get left behind. It’ll be available in sixspeed manual or sevenspeed DCT dual-clutch form; 0-62 times are 4.5 and 4.3 seconds respectively. Either way, a wider track and limited-slip rear diff help ensure that smoky burnouts don’t come with a side order of splashy wipeouts. So too does a chassis package tuned for a blend

of agility and manners that make the M2 as usable as an everyday car as it is a trackday weapon. Wherever it goes, however, it’s got the styling to ensure that neither you nor anyone else forgets what you got for your money. Talking of which, the 55,000€ base price climbs to 60,000€ with the DCT box. BMW expects the M2 to go on sale here in April, and says that when it does

so it’ll be in Coupe form only. The M2 will use BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, which features in the M235i, but has been uprated for the new model. It produces 364bhp and 465Nm of torque, plus an additional 35Nm is available with the overboost function between 1,450 and 4,750rpm. The gearbox, brakes, front and rear axles, crank-

shaft and pistons have all been lifted from the M4 Coupe, too, while there’s also extra water cooler for the engine to keep temperatures stable. The M2 also features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential – to help make best use of the engine’s performance – as standard. Engineers have used aluminium to reduce weight where possible with the M2, making it 35kg lighter than

While the US Department of Justice is suing VW for up to $46bn (£32bn) for allegedly violating environmental laws, there are currently no legal initiatives in Europe against the German firm. However, the EU’s Industry Commissioner, Elzbieta Bienkowska, wrote last week to VW’s chief executive, Matthias Müller, saying that European car owners also had a right to compensation. VW rejected her demand, arguing that there were no grounds to replicate its US compensation programme in Europe. “We are concentrating in Europe on the repair and service process,” the company said after a meeting between Mr Müller and Ms Bienkowska in Brussels. “The situation in the US and Canada is not automatically comparable with other markets in the world. Therefore, this action [the compensation scheme] cannot simply be rolled out in other markets.”

the M235i, at just 1,495kg. It will be limited to 155mph and 0-62mph takes 4.5 seconds when paired with the six-speed manual – an optional seven-speed DCT automatic reduces that to 4.3 seconds. “We’ve got a unique selling point, and it’s something we’ve pushed very hard for, to offer a manual and a DCT,” Steve Roberts, BMW UK’s product operations manager for small cars, said. “We know, with our current M drivers, there’s a lot who love driving with the DCT gearbox, but we know there are a lot of people who will want this as a driver’s car and will want it with a manual.” BMW’s TwinScroll turbocharger has been used on the M2 to improve efficiency, but as the turbocharger has been integrated into the exhaust, this means it also performs better from a cold start. BMW claims the M2 will achieve 35.8mpg and emit 185g/km of CO2, while the auto is slightly less efficient, claiming 33.2mpg and 199g/km.

Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP

Honda’s Fireblade has often defied convention, never more than with this first ever SP model. In the tradition of Sport Production bikes it’s a higher specification version of the standard Fireblade, created primarily for improved racetrack performance. An SP model typically features a tuned engine plus uprated suspension, brakes and tyres. The Fireblade SP’s modified four-cylinder powerplant and components from Öhlins, Brembo and Pirelli tick those boxes. Honda’s new super-sports flagship might also be

expected to feature an array of electronic rider aids, given that many less exotic class rivals already include such features. That’s where the SP swims against the flow, because it has just one riding mode, no traction control and no electronic suspension adjustment. In this determination to keep things simple Honda is continuing a tradition of doing things its own way, dating back to 1992 and the revolutionary first Fireblade, whose capacity of 893cc split the established 750cc and litreplus classes before being

increased to 999cc. This Fireblade’s 16-valve engine retains that capacity. For 2014 it’s mildly tuned, with polished and reshaped intake and exhaust ports, increasing maximum output by 2bhp to 178bhp. For SP use Honda blueprints it by selecting piston and connecting rod sets whose weights vary by less than one gram, rather than the usual three. What makes the SP stand out even more is the way this most exotic of Fireblades eschews the modern trend towards electronic rider aids. Would it be

more versatile and safer if it featured multiple riding modes, traction control and electronically adjustable or semiactive suspension? Probably, although inevitably it would also cost more than the already steep price of 17,500€. There’s no doubt that a sizeable

band of hardcore supersports

riders, including many existing Fireblade owners, will be delighted with it just the way it is. Honda’s traditional approach has retained the model’s trademark poise, while creating what, for track use at least, is undoubtedly the sharpest and best ’Blade yet.

Insurance Fraud Has Tripled Since 2013

As reported briefly in last week´s Courier, it has been revealed that out of every 100 insurance claims submitted, 6 are attempted scams, resulting in an increased cost of 1,190 million euro per year, almost 20% more than in the last report from 2013, a cost which is inevitably and unfailty passed on to those who choose to insure their vehicle correctly. This data has been collated in the third such report since 2009, which reveals that 94.5% of attempted fraudulent claims are related to property damage, although the average claim is around 550 euro. Fraudulent injury claims make up 4.5% of the total, but with the average claim reaching 17,300 euro, the

cost is far more than property-based claims. Damage resulting in the total loss, or damaged beyond repair, is the most commonly occurring fraudulent claim, representing 3 out of 4 of these claims. In terms of claims of physical injury, whiplash is the most common fraudulent claim. Most fraudulent claims are made in the summer months, between May and July, and in January, with Monday being the most likely day that fraudulent claims are made with 19% of all cases recorded. During the weekend, there are only 10% on a Saturday and 9% on a Sunday, as the fraudsters presumably enjoy their rest period. The Murcia region is in the top three locations for

insurance fraud, along with Cuenca and Jaén, whereas Soria, Salamanca and Burgos are the locations with the least fraudulent cases. Whereas there are geographical differences relating to instances of fraud, the same differences are also idenfitiable when looking more at the specific details of each case and, perhaps more significant, the variation in the amounts claimed. The average amount of each attempted fraud across the country is around 1,284 euros, which also happens to be 45% more than in 2013, although there are significant variations between some provinces. In Huesca, Lugo and Almería the average fraudulent claim is 4,800€, 3,600€

and 3,200€ respectively, whereas the fraudsters in Segovia, Zamora and Zaragoza make the smallest claims, with just 230€, 301€ and 390€ respectively on average. It is also possible to identify the most likely person to attempt to defraud the insurance companies, which is good news for those who fall outside the bracket. The profile of the most prolific fraudster is a young male, under 26, with precarious employment or unemployed, or, surprisingly almost the opposite, middleaged, educated and gainfully employed. Men are more likely to boast of their fraudulent claims, even to strangers, whereas women pretend their injuries are worse than they are. However, according to another report which surveyed of more than 1,200 drivers throughout Spain reveals that the intent to commit fraud has halved from two years ago. In addition, 73% of drivers (the equivalent of 19 million) would be willing to report someone if you got a direct economic benefit in return, a very common practice in the US or UK. Nevertheless, more than 5 million motorists admit that they might commit fraud if they knew they would not be caught.

The Importance of Wearing a Seatbelt

There are always questions relating to when seatbelts must be worn, and when it is permitted to drive without wearing one, but the fact remains that these devices are fitted to vehicles for a reason, the reason being to save your life. According to the DGT, 41% of people killed in traffic accidents on urban roads lose their lives as a result of not wearing a seatbelt and that by wearing a seatbelt you reduce the risk of death by a half in the front seat, and by a quarter in the rear. The use of the seatbelt, properly fastened, is mandatory for the driver and all passengers in a car. All vehi-

cle occupants must wear a seatbelt, whether sat in the front or the rear. The seatbelt must also be worn correctly, coming over the shoulder, across the chest and then back across the lap. It should be a snug fit across its entire length of your body. You can pull the seatbelt gently to ensure this. It is never permitted to wear the seatbelt under the armpit, although there was an exemption for pregnant women, that exemption has been withdrawn. Children under 1.35 metres are not allowed to travel in the front seat, unless the vehicle does not have rear seats, all rear

seats are already occupied by other children or it is not possible to install an appropriate restraint system in the rear seats. Children must be restrained in the appropriate and approved fitted seats which suit their age, and weight. As a child´s body is still developing, it is important to provide the maximum protection. It is also advisory for very young children, under 3 years of age, to sit in an approved and fitted rear-facing seat. In the rear seats, people whose height does not

reach 135 centimetres must use a properly fitted child restraint system suitable for their height and weight. People whose height is equal to or greater than 135 centimetres and no greater than 150 centimetres, may either use a child restraint system suitable for their height and weight, which is recommended, or the fitted seatbelt. According to the DGT, 70% of children in cars are not properly protected. The correct use of child restraints helps reduce the injuries from an accident by 75%. Incredibly, nine out of ten children in serious or fatal crashes were not using child restraints correctly. There are six exemptions to wearing a seatbelt. If necessary whilst carrying out a reversing manoeuvre or parking. With certified medical exemption, a certificate of which must be carried with you and in Spanish. Taxi drivers on duty. Multidrop drivers delivering goods at locations within walking distance of each other. Emergency services. Persons accompanying student drivers in certain circumstances.

The Revenge of the Speeder

Traffic police in France have finally managed to identify the cause of seemingly random vehicles being clocked by a fixed radar traveling at excessive speeds. The investigation, carried out by the gendarmes in Marie-Ségolène Poitou, began when an off-duty police officer was caught doing 120 kilometres per hour in his Porsche. Convinced of his innocence, the officer challenged the report and found that there had been similar drivers in the same situation, although many of those had accepted their fate and paid the appropriate fines, whilst some had received bans, with some of the drivers recorded driving in excess of 200 kilometres per hour

and one of those clocked at a staggering 304 kilometres per hour. As the investigation continued, the officers inspected the evidence recorded by the cameras and noticed that on each one, there was an unusual and unexplained apparition, a shadow that appeared near to the vehicles. As the location was near to an airfield, the officers believed that the most likely explanation for the shadow was that it was being cast by something airborne, which was a stroke of genius, a consideration that turned out to be true. Having set a trap, it wasn´t long before the investigators caught the low flying pilot performing his manoeuvre above the road and triggering the radar. With an inflight chase then resulting in the pilot being identified, he was promptly arrested. The conclusion of the subsequent interview was that the pilot admitted that he had taken the action “for revenge”, having himself lost his car driving licence having been caught speeding by the radar. The pilot will be brought before the courts but emergency legislation had to be brought into force as the case is believed to be the first of its kind in Europe.

Punto Negro

Do you know the difference between “an accident blackspot” (“Punto Negro”) and “a dangerous stretch of road”? An accident blackspot is a stretch of road in which 3 or more accidents involving victims occur within a calendar year, within 100 metres of each other. A dangerous stretch of road (Tramo de concen-

tración de accidentes or “TCA” in Spanish) is a stretch of road which has a significantly higher than average number accidents when compared to similar stretches of road. The DGT used road signs to warn drivers that they are approaching a stretch of road where accidents are known to occur, in order to avoid further incidents.

Down Under Nico

Torrevieja teen tennis star, Nicola Kuhn, has been getting a taste of action in the Junior Australian Open this week, which has been running in parallel to the senior event. The 15-year-old from La Mata suffered with a foot injury and lost his first round junior boy’s singles encounter against Canada’s Jack Mingjie Lin, in a close 64, 6-3.

Nicola put aside that disappointment by pairing up with Japan’s Toru Horie for the junior doubles, and winning their first round match with Ergi Kirkin of Turkey and Alexei Popyrin of Australia on Monday. They went out though on Wednesday in their quarter-final encounter with Aussie duo Alex de Minaur and Blake Ellis, losing in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Hail Away Cesár

CD Torrevieja’s midfielder César has left the club by mutual agreement after spending some 18 months at the Vicente Garcia stadium

having signed played for Elche Ilicitano and La Nucia. Cesár played in 18 games this current season, scoring on three occasions.

Kenya’s Marathon Double

Kenya ruled the roost again in last Sunday’s men’s race in the 27th staging of the Santa Pola International Half Marathon with Morris Munene Gachaga winning with a time one hour, one minute and three seconds. His time though wasn’t as quick as last year’s victory by fellow Kenyan, Vicent

Yator, who came over the finishing line in an hour and fifteen seconds. East Africans dominated the top spots this year with Kenyan Jacob Kibet Kendagor second, some 24 seconds behind the winner, and Uganda’s Ben Somikwo came a third, a further 26 second behind.

Kenya picked up the women’s title in a record time of one hour, ten minutes, and 26 seconds for Polline Wanjiku Neru, followed by Spain’s Paula González Berodia in second, and Ait Salem Souad of Algeria, third. Pictures of the event are from the Informacion newspaper.

Local Women’s Rugby The San Javier Squalos side lost their big top of the table Murcia Federation clash away to the Murcia University team, CUDER (pictured) by 20 points to 15 last weekend. The Squalos entertain the University of Cartagena this Saturday afternoon with a 4.30pm kick-off, in what is the last league match of the season, ahead of the play-off semifinals, the first of which is in mid-February.

Striker Signs 29 year old centre-forward José Antonio Hernández Prieto "Prieto" has been unveiled this week as the latest signing for in-form CD Torrevieja, joining from AD Ceuta in Group 10 of the third division. He was Ceuta’s top scorer last season with 12 goals in 24 matches, starting in 21 of them. Prieto has taken leading scorer laurels before, the first one with Almeria B scoring 27 goals and the second with Comarca Nijar where he netted 23 times. He has also experience in 2nd Division B with CP Ejido and San Roque de Lepe. In most of the team he has played for, he’s ended up averaging over 15 goals a season.

Ivie Davies on Golf

Friday 29th January 2016

Rickie Fowler’s Following Of Fashion What do you think of last weekend’s winner Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship winner Rickie Fowlers new golfing attire, trousers and shoes? For me his golf shoes would look more suited to skateboarding or a boxing ring and his elasticated bottomed trousers are similar to those used for jogging. Are these the sartorial golfing attire for the future?Which brings us nicely on to the latest subject matter on the European Tour, that concerning Tournament fashion statements? Wearing shorts! Now I know here in Spain we wear shorts to play golf nearly everytime we play all the year round, but now from the European Tour comes a new rule allowing professional golfers to wear shorts in pro-ams, and practice rounds after their tournament committeeunanimously voted in favour of the proposal last week in Abu Dhabi, a development that has some players, such as Ian Poulter, jumping up and down like… well, you know. But do we want to

see the Tour players wearing shorts during a tournament? The R&A have said they will not allow shorts and already have conditions of entry for the 145th Open at Royal Troon. This is something the Championship Committee will consider in future, but it would certainly be a pleasant dilemma to have if the weather in the UK in midJuly is sufficiently warm for shorts to be desirable. European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley approved a request from European captain Darren Clarke to relax the dress code in the oppressive heat and humidity ahead of the other week's EurAsia Cup in Kuala Lumpur. It’s a sad day when you realise that you’ve started a discussion with, “back in my day.” But that doesn’t make the point any less valid.Tradition is the standard cry whenever an older voice suggests that things are better left the way they are. Invariably, some whippersnapper will yell, “Things change!” and throw out tweed coats,

plus fours, ties, and hickory shafts whenever anyone who knows how carburetors and rotary phones work stands firm against change and screams, “Stop!” In this case, though, banning short pants on tour is not a matter of tradition, it’s a matter of professionalism, an evolving standard that has seen the acceptance of facial hair, camouflage outerwear, and shoes that most people wouldn’t wear bowling. Shorts are a bridge too far. That’s why you have the Pro’s with their name on a staff bag and a clothing contract that keeps them in all that smart attire. They need to separate themselves from the masses by wearing trousers on the golf course, not because it’s a tradition, but because, in short pants, you look like a holiday maker. The USPGA Tour is aware of the European Tour's change in policyallowing players to wear shorts, at certain events during practice and proam rounds. But their Tour's policy remains unchanged. Players are

required to wear long pants when playing practice, pro-am and official competition rounds. I’ve seen Lee Westwood in shorts andIan Poulter’s legs. Trust me, we need to save the public from these images, especially the children. Some things are better left unseen. THE BEST DRESSERS 4. Ian Poulter Our own Ian Poulter can be loud, brash and irritating. He had become especially so in Ryder Cup competitions where he helped Europe dominate the United States. And just like his golf game, Poulter's taste in clothing is brash—but not in the Ryo Ishikawa or Graham DeLaet way. Poulter still projects a classic look. The trouser, the plaids and the occasional pink somehow works for him. He has his own clothing line, IJP Design, based in Leighton Buzzard and it continues with the same grace and flair. 3: Rickie Fowler Rickie Fowler was an instant hit with young golf fans when he hit the PGA Tour. He had longish

dark hair, wore bright colours (emphasising the orange of Oklahoma State, of course) and had those flat-capped golf (skateboard) hats that have become the rage. As Fowler has grown as a player, he's become a favourite of golf fans of all ages. The young man is a bona fide superstar on the PGA Tour and has become a very snappy dresser. He sports a traditional look, and the bright colours work. 2: Adam Scott Look at Australian Adam Scott and two words come to mind: classic and classical. His swing is one of the best ever in the game, making it a classic. Scott's "look," combining his athletic physique and the stylish clothing you always see him in, mak-

ing him a classic for his style. He's what professional golfers have looked like over the years until “individual” styles became the rage. 1: Tiger Woods Tiger has never worn an outfit he didn't look good in (When he is playing). He is the kind of man who could show up in a hessian sack and would look good in it. I can't remember ever seeing him on the golf course and wondering why he wears a particular outfit. Of course, a big part of that is the sculpted body he puts into those outfits. All of that Nike clothing wouldn't look nearly as good on other players as it does on him. Tiger Woods, is (was) the best-dressed player on the PGA Tour (When he plays again!).

KNOW YOUR RULES In stroke play, a competitor concedes his QUESTION fellow-competitor a short putt and knocks the ball away. The fellow competitor lifts his ball, does not replace it as required by Rule 18-4 and plays from the next tee. What is the ruling? A: Stroke counts B: The fellow-competitor is disqualified. C: Both players are disqualified

ANSWER C: The fellow-competitor is disqualified (Rule 3-2).

TITTER ON THE TEE A woman phoned her male neighbour and said: "Close your curtains the next time you and your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday." To which the man replied: “Well the joke’s on all of you because I wasn’t even at home yesterday”.

Sky Bet Championship CD TORREVIEJA 1 ATLETICO SAGUNTINO 0 It’s now 19 points out of the last 21 for Torrevieja and a seventh goal in as many matches for Lewis Allen, as Torry put in a masterful home display at the Vicente Garcia stadium last Sunday, as they turned over the league leaders. Saguntino still head the listings with Torry up to ninth place and seven points adrift of the play off places. Several teams are currently in excellent form, but none more so that Torry who have experience, craft and determination in every position, though Sunday’s win came at a price. It was a match full of power, passion and pace. Miguel kept a fifth consecutive clean sheet, doing so with yet another world class save near the finish. He was not man of the match, however, that accolade going to Jorge who lifted the Pinada Blinds sponsored trophy

after a masterful display of tenacity, determination and timely tackles. Though it was an incredible tackle in the first half from Javi Selvas which saved Torry from going behind, but in doing so, the cultured Selvas injured his shoulder and had to be taken to hospital for treatment. He will be out of action for a month with a dislocated shoulder, which is a big blow for the Salineros. Matej slotted in for the suspended Vicente and bombed forward equally effectively to pin the visitors back for sustained periods. Luis Carlos was doing the same on the left side and Torry were creating chances skillfully. Lewis Allen went close but the best first half opportunity fell to Higon. As defenders closed him down, he tried to control his shot, but failed to find the target. Suarez was busy in possession, creat-

ing space at ease and searching for the telling ball. Sanchez replaced the injured Selvas and he too began to command the midfield with his gutsy tackling and driving forward runs. Lewis Allen is fearless, only playing at a breakneck pace and with complete commitment. He got sliced down near the touchline and was shunted into the perimeter hoardings, requiring medical attention. Nothing stopped him and his persistence worried the league leaders throughout the match. He slotted home his goal from close range, making sure he arrived in the right place at the right time, after first class work down the right and a perfect cross from Sanchez. At that stage, the second half was only three minutes old, and more goals looked likely. That was not to be, how-

ever, but once more, every single player deserves praise and credit for their performance. The team has great self- belief and is winning matches with attractive, entertaining football. Selvas will be sorely missed as he oozes class and ability. Vicente will return from suspension to provide cover, but Torry must maintain this momentum right to the end of the season if they are to contest the play off competition. On this performance you wouldn't bet against them! It is an 11.45 am kick off this Sunday in Alzira, where another three points will be demanded. Keep an eye out for the kick off time of the following home game against high flying Villarreal C, as this is likely to be a noon kick off to accommodate those planning on watching the Torrevieja carnival procession later that afternoon.

Guardia’s Monte Call Montesinos recorded back to back wins in what was a keenly contested local encounter last Sunday, which saw the Guardia Civil being called in after verbal threats against the referee from the Benijofar manager. The match official was given Guardia protection as he left the field, and the ground, and Monte bagged three precious points. Both sides were eager to maintain promotion play-off hopes, and asuccession of Monte first half corners came to nothing as both teams played some good passing possession football, with Benijofar threatening on several occasion, but the home defence stood firm. Monte's best chance of the half fell to Orourke when he just failed to meet a superb run and cross by Carlos. Benijofar then started to boss possession and Lopez what might be the save of the season

CD MONTESINOS 1 CD BENIJOFAR 0

when a mistake by Antonio let in a Benijofar striker with just the keeper to beat, who produced a terrific double save, which brought a standing ovation from the supporters. Monte came out with more determination in the second half, and Carlos and Macan both went close before Antonio blocked a certain Benijofar goal with a class clearance. The game then started to get unsightly with some heavy challenges and off the ball incidents with the referee issuing six cautions in just ten minutes. Lopez tipped over a looping shot, before the only goal of the encounter came with a quarter of an hour remaining. A Macan corner was flicked on by Orourke and was met by the glancing head of defender Manuel to put Monte in front. Not long after the goal the Benijofar manager´s frustra-

Top But Unhappy MALAGA 1 BARCELONA 2 Barcelona coach Luis Enrique admitted his side were fortunate to take all three points from a difficult game at Malaga last Saturday, which saw them return to the top of La Liga, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid only managing draws. Enrique gave a scathing assessment of his team's first-half display, even though Munir El Haddadi's close-range finish gave them the lead after just 64 seconds.Juanpi levelled for the hosts later in the first half, while Lionel Messi brilliantly volleyed in shortly after the break. "It was one of those days when everyone messed up, it was a bad display in general”, fumed Enrique. “We always find it tough to play against Malaga, but I'll remember our second-half performance, when we improved, even though we still made mistakes. The good thing is that we won without playing well." Barcelona entertain Atletico Madrid in the big match of the weekend tomorrow afternoon.

Real Frustration REAL BETIS 1 REAL MADRID 1

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid still have an outside chance of winning La Liga even after drawing 1-1 at Real Betis last Sunday. The Frenchman guided Madrid easy wins over Deportivo La Coruna and Sporting Gijon in his first games since succeeding Rafael Benitez in the dugout, but was unable to continue his winning start in Seville as Real fell four points behind leaders Barcelona, who also have a game in hand. A brilliant strike from Alvaro Cejudo after just seven minutes gave Betis the lead and although they dominated the final stages of the game after Karim Benzema's equaliser, Madrid were unable to find a winner. Afterwards Zidane said: - "We haven't given up on the league, we are going to continue to work hard, we have to look on the positive side.We dropped two points and that's negative but we have to believe that we can recover and remember that you have to fight for the league until the end.” His side entertain relegation-threatened Espanyol this Sunday evening.

Barca Survive Scare

The Segunda division’s top scorer Sergio León delivered again on Sunday as the Ilicitanos unbeaten run now stretches to seven matches, and that after they had to play virtually all of the second half with just ten men after Pelayo got his marching orders for a second yellow card in the 46th minute. Ponferradina’s form contrasts with that of Elche as the visitors had gone five matches without a win, but though the home side dominated first half possession, they didn’t really create that much in terms of a scoring chance. In fact Poneferradina should have scored on the half hour mark, as Alex Martinez cleared a strike that had goal written all over it, whilst a minute later at the other end, a Sergio León shot was well saved by keeper Santamaría. Ironically Elche, despite being reduced to 10 men at the start of the second half, saw some extra life sparked into them helped by some good tactical substitutions by manager Baraja. Javi Jiménez was virtually untroubled in the Ilicitanos goal as Elche ran the second half show, and they deservedly got the only goal of the match with 12 minutes remaining as Sergio León took advantage of an Alex Martinez cross to head into the net. Elche are eight in the table and right in the play-off pack, and are just eight points off the top and the leaders Alaves. They have a perfect chance to boost their standing when they are away to the bottom side Bilbao Athletic this Sunday.

Goals from Neymar and Luis Suárez helped Barcelona fight back to beat Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals. Despite leading 2-1 after the first leg of their rematch of last year’s final, Bilbao dominated most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead on the night after Inaki Williams’s 12th-minute goal. The second half, however, was all Barcelona’s after Suárez calmed the home fans with the equaliser in the 53rd minute. Visibly tired from their first-half efforts, Bilbao wilted before Gerard Piqué and Neymar scored to make it 5-2 on aggregate with less than 10 minutes left. “We went out with a good advantage but then conceding made it complicated for us,” Suárez said. “It was a poor first half from us but then we went out with a different attitude and that made the difference.”

England winger Andros Townsend completed a switch from Tottenham Hotspur to fellow English Premier League outfit Newcastle United on Wednesday. The 24-year-old, with 10 England caps and three England goals, had been linked with the move for some time. Press reports suggested a fee of £12million (15.7million euros) had been agreed. Townsend becomes the second England international to join Newcastle in the transfer window after midfielder Jonjo Shelvey signed from Swansea for £12 million (16 million euros) last Tuesday. "Bringing Andros to the club is a great signing," Newcastle coach Steve McClaren said. "He loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball. He feels he has a lot to prove and I can't wait to see him do that in a Newcastle shirt." Townsend, who made 93 appearances for Spurs, was equally enthusiastic about his new club, who are currently in the relegation zone, third from bottom of the league. I'm delighted to be here," Townsend, who missed the 2014 World Cup through injury, told the Newcastle website. "Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition. As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I can't wait to get started."

Everton's Capital One Everton manager Roberto Martinez was left fuming at what he said was a "hurtful and unfair" exit at the hands of Manchester City in the Capital One Cup. City will meet Liverpool in the final at Wembley on 28 February after a 31 victory at the Etihad Stadium gave them a 4-3 aggregate win against the Toffees. Martinez, however, was upset that the match officials failed to spot Raheem Sterling had run the ball out of play before crossing for Kevin de Bruyne to score City's second with a thrilling game poised at 1-1. That scoreline would have sent Everton to Wembley to face their arch-rivals. Sergio Aguero added a third goal that secured City's place in the final, but an inconsolable Martinez believed Everton's hopes had been wrecked in that crucial 70th-minute moment when referee Martin Atkinson and assistant Scott Ledger allowed play to continue.

Cup Exit Was 'Unfair' "You don't mind if Manchester City find a way of being outstanding and scoring three goals but it is very difficult to find an explanation in the dressing room for the players to find a reason we have been knocked out," he said. "That is hurtful and unfair." Martinez added: "It was a clear decision. The ball is out of play and the second goal affected the outcome too much. You feel so hurt because there have been a few big decisions that have not gone in our favour. "You have to respect the referees and they have the toughest job in football but certain decisions are clear cut, away from the judgment of the referee. "When the ball is out of play in the modern game, you don't expect that to be missed. When it ends up as the second goal, you can imagine the major blow it has to our feelings, our performance and our chances to get through."

The Cherries are doing brilliantly in their first season in the big league, but nothing-to-lose Pompey are going well, fifth in Div Two and will relish this one. Division One going-well Peterborough might be harbouring doubtfullydeluded dreams about going to beat West Brom, hey, the up-and-down Baggies took two goes to put away Bristol City.

Y A D N U S

After last week’s dramatic league action it’s back to the knock-out dramas of both the Capital and the FA Cup. We know now that the League Cup Final on Sunday February 28th will be between Liverpool and Manchester City (see over), having disposed of Stoke and Everton respectively in midweek. In the FA Cup some big names like Leicester and Southampton have already gone, and this time round we’ve got some more potential upsets. Like tonight for example (live on BBC One): Championship high-flyers, but wobbly-lately Derby are playing hosts to worried/boring/Gaalling (delete where applicable) Man United. Saints alive, another embarrassing defeat would bring even more pressure on LVG as the vultures circle Old Trafford (see over). Unlucky for some thirteen matches on Saturday include three tasty all-Prem encounters, which will result in further thinning out of the top teams for the Fifth Round. Match of the Day looks like yet another feisty evening at Anfield as weary Liverpool must gird their loins again after Tuesday’s squeezed-through penalty-time League Cup victory against poor old Stoke after extra time: now the Reds take on rejuvenated West Ham. Earlier rockbottom but last year’s finalists Astounded Villa take on mighty Man City, while recently-rocky Crystal Palace take on stunned Stoke. The Potters will be ‘fresh’ from

MURRAY’S TASK

Andy Murray has Canadian Milos Raonic in his way in this morning’s Australian Open semi-final as he bids to make it fourth time lucky in this Sunday’s final. World number one, Novak Djokovic (conqueror of Roger Federer yesterday) has beaten the Scot on three previous occasions in the Melbourne Park finale.

their unlucky defeat at Liverpool where Sparky’s Spirits were the better team. Both Palace and Stoke were beaten last weekend against Spurs and Leicester respectively – now at least one will progress to the fifth round. Early doors Saturday the Foxes-slain Tottenham nip just up the A12 to League One Colchester, currently floundering near the bottom of their league: on paper, s.b. no problem. But nasty neighbours Arsenal entertain Championship contenders Burnley who should put up a good fight, delirious from defeating Derby 4 – 1 on Monday evening. Bolton v Leeds looks like a good Northern scrap, Bolton in all sorts of trouble, and oncemighty Leeds beginning to improve lately – at last. Bury v Hull should see Steve Bruce’s boys through, the Shakers have just avoided a winding-up order. Prem newbies-and-doing-well Watford are away to improved Championship Forest, the Reds now on a 12 match unbeaten run (hooray!). However, the Hornets returned to winning ways on Saturday beating Newcastle 3 – 1. This result? Game on! Three lower league contests ensure good, well-spread Football Association representation for the Fifth Round: these include Oxford v Blackburn, Reading v Walsall and Shrewsbury against Sheffield Wednesday. Great stuff, full of aspirations and progress in the dream world of FA Cup runs.

? S E S I R P SU After a stupendous Saturday, comes Sunday with two more very interesting matches: the first sees Everton fans once more raging at the Toffees’ basic inability to put the opposition away when leading. The latest chapter in the sorry saga was at the Etihad on Wednesday as Man City came from behind, very late to vanquish poor Everton - once again at the death as the Blues keep doing to the poor opposition. Now there’s great potential for a dramatic FA Cup upset for Martinez’s men at the hands of Division Two Carlisle. Anything could happen at Brunton Park with the leaky Toffees defence, and Carlisle will be up for it. Finally here’s another fascinating one: Championship side MK Dons look all set to give improved-of-late Chelsea a good game, the Blues having blissfully beaten rivals high-flying Arsenal and in doing so stopped the Gunners returning to the top of the Prem. But the Dons have astounded the football world by steadily climbing the lower leagues in recent seasons - and Chelsea would be a terrific scalp: game on!

MADRIDS BACKED

La Liga President, Javier Tebas, has defended Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, describing the transfer bans issued to both clubs as ‘medieval’. FIFA has banned them from signing players for the next two transfer windows after rule-breaking on transfers of overseas under-18’s.
