KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY
ALEX TRELINSKI
FILL UP AND DRIVE ROBBERS
S
ix members of the same family have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and accused of at least 125 cases of driving off from Alicante Province filling stations without paying. Authorities say they expect to uncover more such incidents in a major operation of deception.
The group is accused of defrauding petrol stations; breaking into cars; as well as stealing the vehicles themselves across the municipalities of Sant Joan, El Campello, Alicante, Ibi, Sax and Novelda. The four principal leaders are aged in their forties, but the other two
arrested by the Guardia are aged 69 and 76. False number plates and at least forty stolen plates were used on some of their purloined vehicles to avoid detection as they would fill up with fuel and drive away from service stations without a visit to the cashier. Many of the stolen cars and plates they used were
stolen from vehicles on supermarket car parks, with some of the stores being robbed as well. Authorities say that a kindergarten in the Sant Joan area of Alicante was also robbed. No further details of the arrested family were made available to the media as The Courier went to press.
