IT’S A STEAL GUARDIA BUST ROMANIAN ROBBERY GANG ALEX TRELINSKI

T

he Guardia Civil have arrested nine Romanians in Guardamar and Formentera for allegedly robbing foreign visitors to the Costa Blanca and Mar Menor areas, who they started tracking as soon as they had entered the arrival terminals at Alicante-Elche or San Javier airports. Eight men and one woman aged between 22 and 42 are now in the hands of an Orihuela court.

The Guardia were alerted that something was wrong back in April, with a string of thefts from holiday homes being reported to them in Algorfa, Torrevieja, the Orihuela Costa, San Miguel de Salinas, and La Manga, in addition to further afield in Calpe on the northern Costa Blanca.

The alleged Romanian crooks had apparently put together a sophisticated operation which involved them targeting evening flight arrivals at either Alicante-Elche or San Javier, and then robbing

some of their unprepared victims straight away. Their main tactic though was to use various hire cars to follow new arrivals to their holiday destinations, where they would steal the contents of their bags and suitcases. They used hire cars to try to put the authorities off the gang’s scent, who

the Guardia said appeared to target mainly female holi-

daymakers.

The Guardia’s raids in homes in Guardamar and Formentera uncovered several bags, a high-end mobile phone, and over eleven hundred euros in cash, with the nine people being arrested towards the end of May. Earlier this year, The Courier reported on British consular officials asking car rental companies to remove stickers from the back of cars as this makes them an obvious target for thieves.

The car hire companies had pledged to issue new advice to their customers, which include never leaving belongings visible from outside the vehicle as well as ignoring distraction attempts either on the road or in a car park, as this could be part of a ploy ahead of a robbery.

Firefighters battled for five hours last Saturday afternoon to bring a blaze under

control in the hills above the Orihuela area village of La Aparecida.

Some five

hectares of forest were hit, with a helicopter and small plane being used in the

operation, with the blaze starting close to a deserted house. The dry scrubland

meant the fire spread quickly but the authorities had put it out within five hours.

Plans to change Spain’s property law to protect buyers from having their houses demolished have been thrown out by the country’s upper house of parliament in Madrid. The Senate controversially threw out proposals to protect homeown-

Regional variations actually saw a property rise of 0.69 percent in the Valencia region, which includes the Costa Blanca, and an above average hike of 1.35 percent in the Murcia region.

BOOZY FOOL

Budget airline Jet2 has banned a passenger for life after a flight bound for Alicante-Elche airport was forced to divert to France last Friday (May 29th) due to his alleged boozy antics.

An airline

spokesman claimed the unruly traveller ignored the crew's repeated orders to stop drinking alcohol brought on board, using intimidating language and threatening behaviour.

The man, identified by the airline as Grant Marshall, and 13 others were flying from Leeds Bradford Airport to Alicante-Elche when the crew decided to make an unscheduled stop to have him removed.

The Boeing 757-200 landed at Toulouse Airport in southern France and Mr Marshall was escorted from the plane by police.

The flight then continued on to its destination without him. Jet2 said Mr Marshall could now face prosecution and could be held liable for the cost of the diversion, which will run into several thousand pounds.

Albatera, Algorfa, Almoradi, Benijofar, Catral, Daya Nueva, Dolores, Formentera del Segura, Guardamar del Segura, Jacarilla, Los Montesinos, Rojales, San Isidro and San Fulgencio will be some of the places to benefit.

Supermarket chain Mercadona has made it into the top 50 biggest familyrun businesses in the world, beating Spanish clothing empire Inditex by seven places. A list of the 500 largest on the planet put together by the Centre for Excellence at Ernst & Young accountants, together with the Family-Run

Business Centre at Switzerland's Saint Gallen University, features the Valencia-based company at number 48. This means the supermarket network, which now has branches all over the country and was founded by Juan Roig and family, has beaten the firm behind the Zara chain in terms of size.

BIGGER DRUNI

Valencia region-based cosmetics and perfume chain Druni has launched a major expansion thanks to buying a similar firm and its 43 stores. Druni, which was founded by the Casp family in 1987 in the village of Carlet in Valencia province now has 246 stores across the country, but until recently has concentrated its expansion efforts into provinces close to home, on

the east coast and slightly inland. But the takeover of Madrid-based company Gilgo has allowed the firm to break into the capital, where it will shortly start renovating its 43 stores there and in nearby Toledo as well as opening a new one of its own. Druni already has in excess of 1,200 employees, and it is expected that all 208 of Gilgo's staff will be kept on.

RECORD BREAKER

May 2015 will go down in history as the hottest recorded May since weather records began in Alicante Province. Six areas within the province logged over 40 degrees Celsius on May 13th and 14th, including Elche,

Rojales, and Orihuela.

Crevillente clocked the hottest figure at 42 degrees.

Average temperatures for the month were two degrees above the normal values, and rainfall levels were 85 percent lower than normal.

SLOW JUSTICE The murder trial of a mother and son collapsed for the second time in six years on Tuesday after Elche prosecutors called for a 20 year jail sentence for both of them (pictured at the 2009 hearing) over the alleged murder of her husband. The case fell apart over the keeping of telephone records with the jury being discharged by the judge. Prosecutors had accused the woman of killing her husband by running him over in the La Mata area of Torrevieja back in 2003. The long standing “crime of passion” case involved an Elda-based teacher, Miguel Lloret Candela, being downed by a car in a hit and run in January 2003, with the authorities claiming the vehicle was owned by his ex-wife, Dolores Sánchez Fernández. Reports suggested that she and her son, Miguel Lloret Sánchez, had a heated discussion with Mr.Candela the night before in a bar about an alleged affair with a woman.

Around 250 people cycled the five kilometres distance between Daya Nueva and Daya Vieja last Sunday as part of the commemorations for World Recycling Day. The event

was organised by Vega Baja’s Consortium for Economic Development and started off with a recycling workshop for the youngsters in Daya Vieja’s Plaza del León.

DOLE DOWN

Spain’s dole queues showed a record May fall of 118 thousand down to four point two million, a 2.72 percent drop on April’s figures, and the biggest May reduction since records began.

The drop meant 117,985 fewer people unemployed in the country, leaving a total of 4,215,031 people registered as unemployed.

The Ministry said that on a year-on-year basis, the number of people registered as unemployed had fallen by 357,354 people, a 7.82 percent fall in comparison with a year earlier. The surge in new jobs can be down to

seasonal requirements at the start of the holiday season. The most noticeable fall in unemployment came in the service sector where jobless claims fell by 68,826 across Spain but it also fell in construction, industry and agriculture sectors and in each of Spain's regions.

Alicante Province now has 189 thousand people on the dole, a yearly drop of under seven thousand (3.42 percent down on last month), whilst the Murcia region has 130 thousand people looking for work (3.93 per cent down on April).

A distinctive Santa Pola landmark will be demolished to make way for a supermarket. The Camelot night club closed down at the start of the year, after being in business for 25 years.

Santa Pola council has received planning application documents for the change to the site, though the name of the supermarket owner has not yet been revealed.

A National Police officer in Valencia City climbed up a four-metre wall to rescue a pet cat on Monday night, and then posed for a photo with him. The officer, David, was called out by a distressed owner whose Russian blue and white cat Leo had got stuck. David

had no qualms about scaling a wall more than twice his own height without any proper equipment to reunite Leo with his owner. But the officer said it was 'just a bit of fun' and 'all in the course of duty'. Leo was a little nervous after his ordeal, but otherwise unhurt.

A 20-year-old Valencia man has been beaten up by tram security guards for refusing to pull up his lowslung trousers. The incident on the city's Metro happened last Thursday afternoon (May 20th) at Garbi station with a video showing two uniformed security guards hitting the man with batons, while fellow passengers scream and shout at the men to stop.

The security guards claim

the man did not have a ticket and was wearing his trousers too low, and when the passenger was told to pull them up, he told the guards he could wear them how he liked. According to Valencia's tram authority, FGV, the young man entered the train with his trousers down and without a ticket. The two security guards have since filed a complaint that they received injuries in the scuffle with the

passenger.

FGV sources also apologized for the actions of the security guards, condemning the force used by the men, who are employees of security company Garda.

The company has opened an investigation into the incident in association with the police. The two security guards have been suspended from duty on request of the FGV pending the outcome of the investigation.

A un-named manager of an undisclosed local market is threatening to take legal action against Guardamar council for not implementing Valencia Supreme Court rulings to close down the Sunday “El Campico” market off the Lemon Tree Road. This is

separate from the Moncayo market operating across the highway, with “El Campico” running since 1992 with hundreds of stalls and bars.

The market has operated unlicensed for 23 years and the court ruled that public interests were not served by it continuing.

Informacion newspaper reported on Monday that the un-named manager of a rival market has been in touch with Guardamar council calling for them to instigate the closure as directed by the Supreme Court, which was not enforced affect last Sunday.

A judge has said no to a bail reduction for Princess Cristina with no cut in her 2.7 million euro bail ahead of her tax fraud trial.

Investigative Magistrate Jose Castro said he would not slash the bail figure, after both Cristina's lawyers and the prosecutor had asked for the bail to be reduced to 450 thousand euros in accordance with what she would have to cough up as a fine if

convicted.

Cristina, the 49-year-old sister of King Felipe, has been indicted as part of a four-year probe into her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, who faces charges including money-laundering and fraud.

Cristina and Urdangarin, through their lawyers, have repeatedly asserted their innocence.

The trial is expected late this year.

QUITE A BUZZ

A 95-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of killing a fellow resident in an old people's home in Northern Spain by bashing him on the head with a zimmer. The 88-year-old victim died in a Pamplona hospital after the attack in the residence in nearby Sanguesa.

"Police arrested the attacker, who according to two witnesses appeared to have used his metal walking frame in the attack, striking him in the head" in the victim's bedroom, a Navarra government spokesman said. "The motive is not known."

A swarm of over 30,000 bees which entered a parked car in the northern city of León forced to close a whole street for three hours last Saturday. The queen bee had escaped from her hive

and flew into a vehicle by the roadside, and the rest of the worker bees followed her, squeezing in through the bonnet. They were not discovered until some 90 minutes after the invasion, with the local police calling in a bee-keeper, who was delayed for some two hours.

The keeper, in full protective uniform and gloves, 'smoked' the creatures out of the car into a cardboard box with a honeycomb inside it. It took at least an hour for him to remove them all and take them back to their hive.

Pilar de la Horadada's tourist information office on Plaza Campoamor has new extended opening hours for the summer season which will run until the end of September. The bureau will be open Monday through till Saturday between 10.00 am and 7.00 pm with no siesta, whilst it will also be manned on a Sunday between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm. The office saw a 40 percent rise in inquiries last year.

A Madrid woman who allegedly committed 67 crimes within six months, using her 19 year old daughter as an accomplice, has been arrested. The 44 year old woman was accused of one robbery involving violence and intimidation; another 11 robberies with force; 15 crimes of falsified documents; 15 counts of stolen identity and 25 incidents of scamming, Police began investigating last November when they learned about various rob-

beries where documents and wallets were stolen from victims and later used to make online purchases, obtain credit and set up telephone lines. Victims of theft later reported credit card charges from stores or websites they had never visited.

Investigators then started to make the connection between the crimes and were able to locate the mother and her daughter.

The 44 year old had already been arrested previously for similar crimes.

THE first time we threw a party at home, all our guests went home early. But that's the price one pays when the only albums in one's record collection are movie soundtracks.

'I've never been so embarrassed in my life,' Mrs S moaned after the last couple had fled the premises at 8.30pm. 'And it's all YOUR fault!'

'There was nothing wrong with my choice of music,' I argued. 'Maybe it was your avocado dip that made our friends leave so soon.'

'You're talking rubbish!' cried Mrs S. 'No, YOU'RE talking rubbish!' I cried back. As usual, our domestic duelling had entered the heady realms of super-intellectual engagement.

After we'd cleared away all the unused party gear -the streamers, the hats, the balloons -- and vacuumed the carpet -- which didn't need Hoovering because no guest had been at ours long enough to leave a mess -Mrs S and I resumed our altercation.

'Oh, the shame of it all,' she said, plunging her humiliated head into her hands. 'All those excuses for not staying at the party.

The last straw was Edna and Jack saying they had to get home to relieve the babysitter -- and they haven't even got kids!'

'I still say it was the avocado dip!' I insisted. 'No, husband, it was your music,' she insisted back.

I glared at Mrs S. 'I'll have you know that my collection of film music has given me intense pleasure over the years.'

her hands and shook it. 'It wouldn't have been so bad if you'd owned the LPs from Oklahoma and South Pacific but to expect our guests to boogie to Bridge on the River Kwai and smooch to Spartacus is ridiculous.'

'But I adore my serious film music,' I said with a catch in my voice and a tear in my eye.

'I know you do,' responded Mrs S in soothing tones as she wrapped a comforting arm around my shaking shoulders. 'But I also know that one of your tricks when you're losing an argument is to pretend to weep. Well, I'm not falling for that one again.'

I stopped my crocodile tears and stormed into the kitchen. 'Why did I ever marry that uncultured

woman!' I called out loud.

'Because you adore her,' suggested Mrs S's best friend Phyllis who had stayed behind after the party to help with the unnecessary cleaning-up.

'Don't be stupid, Phyllis,' I said. And then, suspecting that she might report our conversation back to her best pal, I added quickly: 'That I worship Mrs S goes without saying.'

The idolised Mrs S entered the kitchen. 'The worst part of the party was when you asked the guests to form a circle and perform The Birdie Song.'

'But the Birdie Song is a party favourite,' I argued.

'I know that!' hissed Mrs S. 'But not YOUR version, the main theme from Birdman of Alcatraz.'

'That was a marvellous

movie,' I enthused. 'It certainly was,' said Phyllis, equally enthusiastically.

'Don't encourage him!' begged Mrs S, glaring at Phyllis. But it was too late.

'I don't know why the film was called Birdman of Alcatraz,' I said. 'Burt Lancaster had to leave his canaries behind when he was transferred there from another prison. He didn't have any birds at Alcatraz.

The film should have been titled Birdman of Leavenworth.'

There was a brief silence as Mrs S and Phyllis took in what I'd just told them. I really do like educating folk.

Then I said: 'Anyway, I blame your mother.'

Phyllis turned ashen. 'But my mother is dead. How can she have anything to do with any of this?'

'Not YOUR mother, Phyllis!' said Mrs S. 'He's talking about MY mother.

Which begs the question of what my mum has to do with this shambles of a party.'

'She has everything to do with it,' I responded. 'Your mother has no taste in music and she's passed that on to you.'

'Garbage!' said Mrs S. 'I'll have you know that my mother is life president of the Bury branch of the Max Bygraves Fan Club.'

'And that's another thing,' I said. 'What's another thing?' chorused Mrs S and Phyllis.

'Krakatoa, East of Java,' I said. 'Huh?' the two women said in unison.

'Just like Birdman of Alcatraz, that film is another misnomer of a movie.

Krakatoa is in fact WEST of

Java.'

'Please tell me that all this is part of a surrealist nightmare,' Phyllis begged. 'I'm afraid I can't do that,' said Mrs S as I plunged on.

'Your mother has lousy taste in music,' I insisted.

'She never got over it when Shirley Temple grew up and stopped singing.'

'But my mother is . . .'

'Not YOUR mother, Phyllis!' crooned Mrs S and me.

All three of us were pretty exhausted at this point but I hadn't finished yet. 'And that's another thing,' I said.

'Do you both remember that Henry Fonda film called Big Deal at Dodge City?'

'No,' croaked the two women.

'Well,' I went on, 'The action clearly takes place in Abilene. So why call it Dodge City in the title on the film's UK release? And anyway, the original American title was A Big Hand for the Little Lady. So why change it in the first place? Go figure.'

I looked around the kitchen and saw that, apart from the avocado dip, I was alone.

I assumed that Mrs S had gone back to Phyllis's house for a chinwag but just in case she was still around I called out: 'I'm off for a shower now.

'And please don't put on that fright wig, pick up the bread knife and rip back the shower curtain while I'm in there. That Psycho joke of yours is wearing a bit thin now -- unless you actually plan to go through with the stabbing. Which, of course, you would never, ever do . . . would you?'

The National Police have seized 200 kilos of cocaine found inside a hollowed-out batch of pineapples that arrived by ship from Central America into the southern port of Algeciras.

The pineapples arrived from an undisclosed country and were en route to two companies, one based in Madrid and the other in the Barcelona area. Both companies were said to be run by Spanish nationals of Colombian origin, with police arresting three people.

PETER SINGH A couple of weeks ago, I was driving along the outskirts of Pinoso and there in the middle of the road was a little black and white spaniel.

He was in such a dangerous place and I feared for his life. I stopped the car and got out the tempting treats I always carry, but he was so terrified that he just ran off into the distance. I left him a bowl of food and went back later to check if he had ate it and thankfully he had. There was no sign of him though.

Trying to catch these types of dogs is always a massive challenge, because they are so terrified. Throughout the next nine days I spotted him, as did a number of other people and he seemed to be travelling up the Pinoso to Yecla road and back again. I feared that I would next see him dead by the side of the road, after being hit by a vehicle, but thankfully this never happened.

I put out a large dog trap we have, in a secluded spot and put some sardines in there along with some water and Jean went back, early the next morning and there he was laying inside the trap, as if he was sitting in front of the fire! I put my hands in the trap and secured him to a loop lead and opened the trap. He was very skittish and tried to run away. He made a sud-

den movement with his neck and the next thing I knew, I was looking at an empty lead, with no dog on the end of it. My heart sank, as he rushed away into the campo. I was simply gutted.

It was my fault, as I had not put the lead on him properly.

Through my own stupidity this dog’s life now lay in the balance.

I reset the trap and again put some sardines in there with some water and also left a few tasty treats for good measure. We were overwhelmed when we went back the next morning to

again see him laying comfortably in the trap and he gave us a look as if to say, “you took your time”. This time we put the whole trap in the car and drove him straight to our vet, Cristina and had him checked over.

He had no microchip, but he did have a load of fleas and ticks as you can imagine.

The upsetting thing was after studying him, you could see that this dog had no spirit left. He just did not know what to do when he saw a person or another animal. He would just freeze as he hid away.

We took him home and gave him a healthy meal and some water and let him sleep. The sleep part I think is vital, as dogs like this have been through so much stress that sleep is something that will help them to recover a lot quicker. So we left him to rest on a nice bed. The next few days we made sure that he was in and amongst all of the other dogs we have. Again he would just freeze, but he had to go through this, in order to get use to other animals. To turn any dog around can take between a

day and eighteen months, depending on their character and the abuse they have undergone. This dog had obviously been shut away from the living world all of his life as he just could not register anything around him.

The turning point came yesterday when Jean was outside with him and she witnessed the emotional turning point, in front of her very eyes. Pepe, as we have called him, walked straight up to her and gave her a play bow! We work so hard to experience moments like

this and every time it will bring a tear to your eye. He is now doing very well and each day is improving in confidence, bit by bit. I am so happy that the equipment we have, helped catch this little dog, but as he sat in the trap for the second time, I can’t help but think that he wanted to be caught. It can be tempting to put all your money into savings accounts, which feel reasonably safe. But while this strategy might generate enough income to meet your retirement budgeting needs today, you could be locking yourself into falling living standards later on. Inflation is the worry for all expats taking income from their savings. Even if inflation was just 2% a year, an income of £100 a week today, would need to rise to £102 next year, £122 after 10 years and £149 after 20 years for you to maintain the same standard of living that you have today. There's not much chance of that if you are living off the interest from a savings account.

Other ways to grow your income To protect against inflation, advisers have typically recommended that you invest part of your money in other assets, such as gilts, corporate bonds, fixed interest securities and also equities (shares), to build in the opportunity for your income and capital to grow as the years go by. For example, you might consider investment funds aiming to provide high income by invest-

ing in well-established companies that pay out dividends. The Barclays UK Equity Income Fund has provided an average annual return of more than 8% per annum over the last 5 years.

Investing in property funds has also traditionally been seen as a source of stable and growing income (underpinned by the rents paid for shops, offices and industrial units) and potential for growth.

With both equities and property you are accepting extra capital risk - the risk that the value of your investment might fall - for the chance of a higher return. However, the markets for all investments have been turbulent since the 2008 global financial crisis.

A range of 'structured products' aims to chart a middle course, offering you some of the growth of equities while protecting you to some extent from capital losses. These products are a mixed bag. Some use complex financial arrangements to provide their guarantees and it is important that your adviser selects the correct product for your needs. It’s absolute madness as more than £100 million has been paid out by the NHS in compensation to relatives of patients who die as a result of blunders by hospital staff.

There have been more than two thousand successful compensation claims in the last two years, resulting in 108 million pounds being paid out. Just think what the NHS could do in saving lives with that amount? The cases involve things like sloppy care, such as delays to critical treatment, an incorrect diagnosis, poor nursing or a medication error which led directly to death. In the last year, almost one third of the 1,347 pay-outs for patients dying were triggered by either a failure or a delay to treat a patient that ended up having critical consequences. And this is total madness because the pay out of claims reduces the amount of money available for other patients and results in even more delays. Crazy or what?

Sadly we don´t live in a perfect world and never will, and mistakes in hospitals will always occur, but this litigation culture which Britain is now blighted with has become self -defeating, adding to a shortfall in money which causes even more problems. Come on, get a grip!

On a more positive note comes news of a breakthrough where a virus which normally causes cold sores can be genetically modified so that it fights skin cancer cells. The modified herpes virus is harmless to normal cells but when injected into tumours, it replicates and releases substances to help fight the cancer. Trial results show the therapy could lengthen survival by years but sadly, as yet, only for

some melanoma patients.

Obviously more research will be ongoing and will lead to more good news. In fact, we seem to be hearing almost every week of more types of cancers which can be halted or even reversed by an array of new drugs.

No doubt you read the first sentence of this story and glanced over the words "genetically modified", without giving it any thought. I wonder how many people faced with a growing melanoma on their skin would refuse the treatment because of genetic modification? Now think for a moment of those stupid people who have for years frustrated scientists who have tried to research increased yields for crops to help the human race produce much needed food.

Misguided fools marching on farms which have been trying to grow GM crops remember the stories? I hope all those who campaigned so angrily will think long and hard now. Genetic modification are not dirty

words.

My quote of the week comes from a 39-year-old Nottingham man, Tom Shaw, who has fathered 14 children. He said on a TV programme featuring benefit culture Britain: "I don´t think we necessarily set out to create a big family, they just happen." Hasn´t he learned by now how they come to be conceived and how that can be prevented? This oversexed twit is costing British taxpayers £70,000 a year, with he and his wife awarded an eight-bedroom Victorian house paid for entirely on benefits! And he has the damned cheek to say he can´t get a job because he has his huge brood to look after. He blames it on employers who, immediately when they learn about his huge family, say he´s too much of a risk to employ because he would be off work so often if they were ill. It´s my guess he´s using this as an excuse. Question: Is it possible for a couple to properly bring up such a large family

without some or most of them turning out feral, and secondly, what on earth would happen to Britain if everyone was so completely irresponsible and decided to breed rather than work?

A new word has entered into the English language Neets. It means 'not in education, employment or training' and Britain has an army of them - half a million in fact. They have given up trying to earn a living and have fallen under the radar not only due to their appallingly low levels of skills but also because they have abandoned hunting for jobs altogether. What Britain has is a growing under-class, brought about by the cradle to grave culture of socialism. People with a higher degree of education realise they have to limit the number of children they have to match the income they earn to look after them. Not so the under-class who know the more children they have, the more benefits they get.

They breed the next generation of Neets and the whole

process continues all financed on benefits. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the renowned international think tank, analysed labour force studies from across the world. It found 'a relatively high share' of 15 to 29-year-old Neets in the UK were 'inactive and not looking for a job'. One in four of those had been unemployed for more than six months and faced 'risks of skills erosion'.

The OECD analysed 22 countries and found the UK has the biggest gap in literacy and problem-solving skills between 16 to 29year-old Neets and young employed people out of all the countries surveyed.

What an indictment!

Andreas Schleicher, director of education and skills at the OECD, said: "These people have given up and are not contributing to the UK economy. The longer people are in that situation the more of a liability they become to society." British Neets can claim a range of benefits, including Jobseeker's Allowance if they are aged over 18 and "looking" for work. Even those who are not trying to find a job can generally apply for carer's allowance, disability benefits and income support. It´s a real challenge for the new government, which must reduce the deficit and wean people off benefit culture.

Surprisingly, Spain, one of the countries surveyed, has one of the fewest Neets, and it´s interesting that Spain does not open up Pandora´s Box to people to do nothing. Instead it gives help for a short time and then gives an ultimatum: work or starve. The same message should go out from the British government, regardless of all the whing-

ing from socialists, clergy, charities and do-gooders.

But just as importantly, pressure must be put on employers to open up more apprenticeships and to use British Neets for basic jobs rather than people from overseas.

How much longer will Britain tolerate the antisocial antics of so called travellers? Last week a group of them sparked fury after they pitched up a dozen caravans on a memorial burial ground outside Brighton. Local council officials, bombarded with complaints from people, including those whose relatives' ashes were scattered there, managed to persuade them to move on. But they left behind piles of rubbish, including breeze blocks and a gas canister. Why is it that there isn´t a British law making it illegal to set up camps anywhere other than licensed caravan sites?

Those who do should have their vans seized and destroyed. That would stop it once and for all and end this annual summer invasion.

And finally, can anyone come up with an answer to this one? There is a Spanish owner of two large dogs who lets them out of his home in an adjoining urbanisation to ours at around one o’clock every morning. The dogs, running free, make a beeline to our urbanisation to hunt feral cats and the noise is horrendous. A few nights ago, one cat was caught and killed.

Eventually the owner arrived on a pushbike, chased the dogs and finally drew them away. Rebukes from residents were met with V signs and the like. It´s driving us mad - just after we get to sleep, it´s like being in the middle of WW3!!

TEN YEARS ON

Did you use to live in a small town or a big city back in the UK, or do you still spend part of the year back home living in one? When you look out of your window are you gazing across open fields or staring at cars speeding past hurriedly travelling to their destinations?

I used to have a house in Greater London and I loved living there. It was of course a large urban area which meant amenities were easily within reach but there was also the fresh air of the countryside. I thought I had it all, a very good job, a lovely family life, a semidetached house in a quiet cul-de-sac and friendly neighbours. We would pass our time chatting in the street while the children played nearby. I worked full time but still enjoyed many hours at home with my daughters and relaxing in front of the television. Of course life was far from perfect and that is why I found myself ten years ago, giving up my well-paid work and making the huge move to another country. A place with a strange language that I had no idea how to speak, a

completely different culture and no job or apparent opportunities.

Looking back, I am so glad I made the move when I did. I´m not sure that I´d have the necessary bravery to do it now as I feel I may have become too comfortable and of course ten years of experiences would have been denied to me.

However what was I expecting when I moved here?

Having come from a big house with quiet neighbours in a busy town with good public transport, I moved to a small flat in a little town with no public transport to talk of. It was a culture shock to put it mildly! I believe that I managed to adapt to my new lifestyle quite well, but of course it took me time to get used to the massive change that I encountered. I had to accustom myself to the noises of living in an apartment block and I had to accept the different people that I was forced to live side by side with. Even when their attitude became unbearable and rude, I still maintained my dignity and let them get on with spreading their vicious rumours and

lies. This was possibly the hardest part of coming here, having to put up with people who, for whatever reason they wanted to invent, didn´t like me nor my children.

But I did cope with it, I´m stronger than they thought I

Life can be hard over here but it´s not impossible and those of us working and living and working over here are living proof of this!

The best piece of advice I could give anyone having just moved here is don´t give up. Paperwork and bureaucracy are an absolute hell but it´s the only downside to living here in my opinion.

Remember as you look out of your window and gaze upon whichever scene is playing out in front of you, that you are living many people´s dream and although it´s not everyone´s ideal life it´s the one you have chosen so, while you´re here at least, make the most of it and let others do the same. I hope that you can look back in ten years time, on a decade full of laughs, sunshine, barbeques and swimming pools, and as you do so, you have a big smile.

I can´t begin to emphasise enough the importance of speaking Spanish whenever you can. If you want to improve there has to come a time when you are speaking the language and immersing yourself in the vocabulary and grammar of Spanish.

Bear in mind that it´s a very long road and there are no short cuts regardless of what you may read or see on the internet. Even if you live with a Spanish speaker it would still take you a long time to pick up the language, after all our brains are not the same as a baby´s therefore we need to work harder to pick up the nuances of a new way to speak.

Many people begin to learn Spanish and unfortunately give up because they realise just how difficult it is, no matter how many times I say it, some people seem to think I am just trying to put them off learning, when in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I am so happy when I see an English native person speaking Spanish,

and I mean proper Spanish with the verbs conjugated and an attempt made at correct pronunciation and grammar. My other article has more than covered how I feel about foreigners emigrating to a country and making no attempt to learn the lingo, so all I´ll say is how proud I am of you, reading this, for making the effort to give it a go and trying to integrate into this fantastic country.

Together we can speak Spanish, keep patient and calm and make Spanish friends. Open yourself up to this fabulous world in which we live.

This week we are still talking about prepositions, they can be very confusing and I hope to make some of them a bit clearer for you.

This week we are going to start with the verb según.

The reason that I have chosen this preposition is because it is a strange one in that the English translation is two words, it´s by no means unique in this and

they can be quite confusing because we naturally think that there should be two words when we say it in Spanish if we are thinking in English and trying to translate.

So, what does it mean? Its literal translation is ´according to´. Here are some examples of sentences using the preposition and you will see what I mean about thinking of other prepositions: According to him, it´s a good book – según él, es un buen libro, According to the government there´s no inflation – según el gobierno no hay inflación, According to the radio, it´ll rain tomorrow – según la radio, mañana va a llover.

We can also use según when followed by mi opinion to mean, ´in my opinion´ as in the following examples: In my opinion, priority must be given to the following: Según mi opinion, los asuntos siguientes deberían ser prioritarios, in my opinion, this is the key part of this

proposal – según mi opinion, este es el elemento clave en la propuesta presente.

So, you can see that it is a very useful preposition that is slightly different to English, as long as you remember that you only

need the one word to mean the same as two or three in English then you will be fine.

Be sure to listen out for según next time you are listening to Spanish and if you don´t hear it then try to get it into the conversation yourself.

Football fans are in for a treat tonight as Mark Pougatch introduces live coverage of the Champions League Final from the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Barcelona are favourites to be crowned European champions for the fourth time in ten years and their much-vaunted attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez will test the resilience of Juventus. But with Andrea Pirlo pulling the strings in midfield and Carlos Tevez a threat in attack, Juventus have their own potential match-winners and should not be underestimated. If you´re looking for a bit of escapism though, BBC2 might be the place to go as Jonathan Ross gains unprecedented access to Britain's famous film studio to reveal the magic behind some of the greatest movies ever made. Comedian Jack Whitehall presents a packed hour of entertainment in Sunday Night at the Palladium over on ITV, featuring music and variety acts from all over the planet. Musical performances come from Simply Red, Jess Glynne and Leona Lewis. The show also features Japanese dance troupe EL Squad from the Wrecking Crew Orchestra, champion knife thrower Jack Dagger and his assistant the Unkillable Jenny, and comedians Sara Pascoe and Jack Carroll. There´s variety of a comedic style on Channel 4 as they host their Comedy Gala in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, returning for a sixth year to London's O2 Arena.

Coronation Street - Simon Attacks Leanne In Monday´s Emmerdale, Robert’s shocked by Victoria’ engagement, threatening he will send Adam to prison if it saves her from marrying him.

Later, Robert warns Adam to leave the village to save Victoria, threatening to close down the Scrapyard if he doesn’t go. Victoria warns if she is forced to choose, she will choose Adam. They pack and prepare to leave.

Soon Robert and Andy realise Adam and Victoria are doing a runner.

In our first visit to Coronation Street, Gail barges her way into No.11 and insists on waiting for Michael. Michael’s furious to see her and slams out. Michael later bowls into the Bistro, roaring drunk, loudly revealing that Andy’s an impostor and Gail concealed the death of his real son.

Simon’s growing increasingly moody and storms out of the flat when Leanne asks him to help with some jobs. He later returns in a foul mood, angrily reminding Leanne that his mum is dead and hurls the TV remote at her, hitting her in the face. Leanne’s stunned. When we return for part 2, as Eileen and Michael get physical on the sofa, Michael starts to struggle for breath and collapses in agony. Simon apologises for losing his temper but Leanne marches him round to No.1 and leaves him with Ken. Ken’s curious about her bruise, will Leanne admit it was caused by Simon? In Eastenders, Ronnie discovers that Charlie has been planning Nick's funeral and will be attending the service alone today. Charlie refuses to let her go with him, so Ronnie turns to Ben for some help.

Eastenders - Ronnie Finds a Receipt

TV Choice In Tuesday´s Emmerdale, Emma warns Ross that Debbie will only manipulate him and Pete, but he storms out, heading to the garage where he and Debbie find a stolen car left by Charlie. Ross frantically tries to get rid of it before the police arrive.

Victoria has run away, as she’s in the frame over Ashley. Robert finds Victoria and Adam’s phones at the scrapyard. Later, Robert tells Andy he has sent a message to Diane on their behalf, while a troubled Harriet overhears their exchange. Harriet is soon thrown when Robert employs her to track down Victoria and to name her price for the work.

In Eastenders, Ronnie is more paranoid about Roxy and Charlie than ever. She turns to Vincent for help, but asks him to leave after having second thoughts. When Ronnie tries to find out exactly what they've been up to, she is devastated by what she finds out. At the same time, Charlie goes for a coffee with Roxy and explains that he wants his marriage to work.

Ronnie later confronts Roxy and Charlie, but they insist that nothing is going on between them anymore. As Ronnie secretly carries on with her plan, she asks Ben and Abi to prepare a dinner for Roxy and Charlie so she can make amends for her accusations. Roxy and Charlie are pleased to see Ronnie back to her old self, but they're unaware of her plan...

Coronation Street - Welcome Home Kylie In Emmerdale tonight, Zak tells Cain he thinks Ross took his winnings but when Lisa overhears Zak’s forced to confess about pawning her ring.

Cain and Zak head to find Ross baying for his blood. Meanwhile, Emma confesses to James that she told Pete something was going on between Ross and Debbie. And James immediately guesses what Pete has done.

Meanwhile, in Coronation Street, a nervous Kylie arrives back on the street. When David finds Kylie on the doorstep, his relief soon turns to anger. Spewing apologies, Kylie explains how her addiction landed her in the gutter but she’s totally clean now. Kylie begs him to let her see Max and Lily. There´s tension in tonight´s Emmerdale. Debbie argues with Pete, telling him to give her some space. Later, Ross confronts Debbie about their kiss but she denies there’s a spark between them. Debbie is utterly confused what to do. Cain advises Debbie to stay away from Ross, likening their relationship to his and Charity’s. Debbie goes to visit her mum in prison, where she tells a shocked Charity she is cheating on Pete with Ross. Charity’s trying to get her head round Debbie’s news when Debbie asks her mum for advice. However they are interrupted by the end of visiting hours. Later, Debbie is dropped a bombshell by her mother.

There is a major event that will reveal itself tonight, involving Charity. It is such a shock, the producers have asked us not to reveal or hint at anything, so you really do NOT want to miss this.

Kirin’s teenage party starts to get out of hand but Kirin doesn’t care.

Priya heads home and is gobsmacked when she walks into the party, ordering everyone home and Kirin to clean up. A drunk Kirin tries to kiss Priya. Will she tell Rakesh what Kirin has done.

In Eastenders, Masood's new stall is opening today, but his main focus is still on finding his granddaughter. He speaks to Jane about his intentions and after getting Roxy to look after the stall, they head to the address together. Jane suggests that Masood should talk to Shabnam first, but just as they're about to leave.

We have some exciting casting news this week as acclaimed actress Dakota Blue Richards is joining the cast of Endeavour III as WPC Shirley Trewlove, appearing from film 2 alongside Endeavour Morse as a new regular character.

Thorough, determined and forthright, Trewlove proves herself a vital addition to the force and quickly draws the admiration of Endeavour by demonstrating natural initiative, a wry sense of humour and perhaps most keenly, a rare intellect – one not entirely similar to his own.

Executive Producer Russell Lewis said “Bright, capable and brave, WPC Shirley Trewlove is a very welcome addition to the ranks of Oxford’s Finest.

Alongside Dakota, which familiar faces will return for Endeavour III after the shocking and tragic events at the end of series II? Falsely accused Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) was last seen isolated and alone languishing in prison, framed for the murder of Chief Constable Rupert Standish. Endeavour had unearthed corruption at the very heart of the City Force but his investigation had taken a sinister twist.

Will his life be back on track? “Live in the shadows long enough…? You forget the sun.” And does it resemble the life he’d known?

What of Endeavour’s senior officer, DI Fred Thursday (Roger Allam), whose life was hanging in the balance after being shot in the chest? Has Thursday sur-

vived serious injury? Is his trademark trilby still hanging on its hook?

In other police drama news, Detectives Robbie Lewis and James Hathaway are returning to ITV in six new episodes of Lewis, as one of ITV’s best-loved and most enduring dramas returns for a ninth series.

Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox reprise their roles as the detectives renowned for investigating Oxford’s most complex murders, alongside Angela Griffin as Detective Sergeant Lizzie Maddox.

DCI Banks and Scott & Bailey star Steve Toussaint joins the cast as a new regular character, Chief Superintendent Joseph Moody. The high flying, by the book CS soon clashes with Robbie Lewis over the latter’s more traditional approach to detective work.

Laura Hobson contemplating early retirement, and the new boss piling on the pressure, will Lewis finally decide to call time on his policing career?

Meanwhile, after years of avoiding the thorny issue of family ties, Hathaway is forced to confront his past as his surprised colleagues at Oxfordshire Police are introduced to his father and sister, played by Nicholas Jones and Sally Scott as Philip N Hathaway and Nell Hathaway.

Also joining the cast for the first of the new films, ‘One For Sorrow,’ are Steve Pemberton and Helen Schlesinger as Ian and Vivienne Tedman, a university lecturer and her husband with connections to the death of psychology student and artist Talika Desai.

Against a murky backdrop of social media, drugs, taxidermy and alternative art, Lewis and Hathaway are called to investigate the death of over achieving student and amateur taxidermist, Talika Desai, by an apparent drug overdose.

Ralf Little stars as art agent Sean Wilkinson, Tim PigottSmith as taxidermist Jasper Hammond, and Naomi Scott as social media star Sahira Desai.

The new series of Lewis will go into production this month and will once again feature the beautiful locations in and around the city of Oxford.

Tension in Emmerdale

Perhaps not as explosive as the fire on Coronation Street, or as dramatic as being hit by a rucksack on Eastenders, fans of Emmerdale are in for a tense week, with one story so guarded by secrecy we´re not even allowed to hint at it (but we think we can tell you that it involves Charity).

Robert takes news of Victoria’s engagement badly. Victoria and Adam go on the run but Andy and Aaron cover the facts. Double dating Pete is suspicious at Debbie and Ross colluding.

Ashley has a seizure and receives a diagnosis.

Bernice has a fictional boyfriend but Tracy smells a rat. Debbie’s anger at Pete pushes her into Ross’s arms. A con-

fused Debbie visits her mum in prison. Kirin makes a pass at Priya.

Charity drops a bombshell. Remember that´s just what we´re allowed to tell you!

One thing we can reveal this week is that (don´t read if you don´t want a spoiler) Ashley wakes up but doesn’t remember the accident.

Harriet tells him he had a seizure. PC Ward arrives to talk to Ashley but it’s clearly all a blank to him.

Now, back to what we can´t tell you. Thursday is the day not to be missed as all will be revealed and it is one gobsmacking twist that promises to leave viewers with more questions than answers. But what is it? Wait and see on Thursday.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Comedy guru Barry Cryer hates it, whilst Dad’s Army co-creator, Jimmy Perry, loves it. What am I writing about? It’s ITV’s comedy Vicious, which returned on Monday night with the wonderful Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi camping it up in another set of entertaining barbs and tirades, backed up by the splendid Frances de la Tour. I loved the first series two years ago, but I can understand that it would not be to everybody’s taste.

Barry Cryer’s take was that he felt it just pandered to old gay stereotypes, but clearly McKellen and Jacobi (both gay themselves) don’t feel that, and they hardly need to do it for

the money! It’s also the funniest original ITV comedy for many years (I don’t count Birds of a Feather which was a BBC creation), and it also has the return of Welsh actor Iwan Rheon doing comedy as he plays the dopey Ash. It‘s a zillion miles away from watching him on the same night playing the nastiest character on Game of Thrones, namely the sadistic Ramsay Bolton who all Thrones fans want to see get a grizzly end! One thing I’m convinced that Messrs.

Cryer and Perry would agree on is the awfulness of the new BBC1 comedy, Sun Trap, which would be better dropping the letter T for the letter C to offer a

perfect description of what it actually is. I won’t bother wasting valuable space on this stinker which elevates the scripting of the last series of Benidorm to Poet Laureate status, but I would love to know why it is running twice in a late night

slot within the space of two days, a privilege that wasn’t accorded to Count Arthur Strong earlier this year? Also wouldn’t most viewers have preferred instead to have watched the BAFTA-award winning Mackenzie Crook comedy,

The Detectorists, which was only watched by two men and a dog on BBC4?

I almost barked with joy when Matisse and his clever owner, Jules won Britain’s Got Talent on Sunday.

Who’d have thought there would be another doggy winner after Ashleigh and Pudsey a few years ago, but this was a few grades higher, with a gorgeous heartfelt routine that bordered on genius, and left me moist eyed, especially when the threelegged dog, Skippy, appeared. Brilliant stuff. I love the weekly reruns of the old Top of the Pops show on BBC4 which are taking us back this year to 1980, but of greater poten-

tial interest are the constant rumours that TOTP could set for a return, with Dermot O’Leary and Fearne Cotton pencilled in as hosts. With the high standard of British pop music at the moment, it’s nuts that there isn’t a weekly primetime pop show, so let’s hope these rumours turn to fact.

Most of my favourite US shows have wound down at the end of the season, but two quick plaudits for the finale of season two of The Blacklist (Sky Living) which was a corker, and for the end of the premiere season of The Flash (Sky One), which has been the most fun of all the new Stateside shows.

YES, MICROSOFT REALLY IS OFFERING YOU A FREE COPY OF WINDOWS 10 I have been contacted by quite a few, understandably sceptical, customers when they saw a “strange” icon appear in the bottom right of their computer screen.

When they hover over or click the icon, they receive an unlikely offer from Microsoft. The offer is for a free upgrade to the latest operating system – Windows 10.

Yes, believe it or not (and you should because its true) Microsoft really are offering all of the current Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 customers a free upgrade to Windows 10 and users will have 12 months from the release date of the 29th July to take advantage of the free upgrade offer – after this time Microsoft say that the upgrade will be still available although users will have to purchase it.

So….is it worth it? I guess the easy answer is a resounding “yes” from me – albeit with some caveats, of course. I certainly feel that Windows 10 is a better operating system than Windows 8 (or

8.1). There is nothing intrinsically “wrong” with this operating system, but people have struggled getting used to its “unique” ways of operating and a move to Windows 10 will bring them back to a more familiar way of working.

In addition those users that have Windows 7 are now effectively two operating systems out of date and the change to leapfrog Windows 8.1 and go direct to Windows 10 is one that should be welcomed in this unprecedented move by Microsoft.

The caveat is simply that nothing to do with upgrading or changing your computers software is risk free. I have to mention that I moved from Windows 8.1 to the beta (pre-release) version of Windows 10 about 6 or so months ago and it was a very easy migration – almost too easy really, but this shouldn’t be accepted as what may happen in your case. I would certainly recommend that you make a good backup of your data and check that it’s reliable before

you start the upgrade ensure that you have access to all of your important passwords (Wi-Fi password etc.) as you may need to enter them as part of the installation process. I would also recommend that you look out (or create if you haven’t already) your current operating systems recovery DVD´s and any software that you have installed from DVD, because if the upgrade goes bad then you need to be able to get your computer back to the state that its currently in.

Ok, so when you have decided to go for it – what do you have to do?

At this stage you just need to click on the icon (see image below) on your computer – if you don’t see an icon then check to see if you have any Windows updates waiting to be installed. Once this icon is clicked you will be asked a few simple questions and then when Windows 10 has been released Microsoft will contact you again.

CHOOSING WORKSHOPS AND GARAGES IN CONJUCTION WITH N332.ES

The key to safer driving not only lies in the hands of those on the roads, but also in the hands of those responsible for carrying out work on our vehicles.

Although the authorities do everything they can to close them down, there are still many garages and

workshops that are not authorised to carry out any form of vehicle repair, and although many of them do a good job perhaps for less money, there are many who put all road users at risk.

An illegal workshop is a fraudulent business model, often conducted on unli-

censed premises, and often without the requisite regulatory permits, access to technical information on vehicles or the approval from vehicle manufactures to carry out repairs. They often also fail to comply with health and safety and environmental legislation and often carry

out work without issuing invoices and without any form of guarantee.

The frightening fact is that according to official sources, although no official figures exist, it is estimated that 20% of workshops across Spain are currently operating without the relevant licenses. A situation exacerbated by the economic crisis, which has led many consumers to turn to these fraudulent workshops, attracted by lower prices, without being fully aware of the consequences.

Inferior work, low price and unofficial parts, cheap labour and a lack of guarantee all undermine the rights of a consumer, and is a practice punishable by law.

On the other hand, legal and approved workshops have the necessary machinery and the right tools for repairs, access to the most up to date technical information for vehicle, they only use approved and traceable spare parts, guarantee repairs through the production of an invoice and provide continuous training for

their employees.

Therefore, only the legal establishments can ensure proper handling of the vehicle, resulting in increased road safety by reducing the risk of accidents.

The technical information of the vehicle provides the guidelines set by the manufacturer to ensure proper handling and repair, minimizing risks, ensuring optimal performance and extending its life. Only legally established workshops have access to this guide to ensure proper repairs of each model vehicle.

The traceability of parts refers to garages being able to ensure the origin. In a legally established workshop the consumer can be sure that the piece is approved, which is required for that type of car that has all manufacturer warranties.

In illegal workshops where it is not traceable, installed parts can have very varied origins including from crashed or scrapped vehicles and sometimes through theft.

Due to the increasing complexity of vehicles it is essential that mechanics attend training courses that are held periodically that provide the guidelines for the proper repair of all types of vehicles. The mechanics are quickly outdated if they do not receive these courses, which only legal workers can have access to.

The question of course is how does one identify an illegal workshop?

Unfortunately, they are not always easy to recognise, but there are some tell-tale signs to look out for.

A legal workshop will always provide a printed quote for work in advance, and will also provide an invoice and guarantee afterwards.

Illegal workshops are usually in places where they

work behind closed doors, sometimes in garages of private homes, sometimes even in the street.

The most important clue of all is that official and legally approved workshops have a nameplate granted by the Ministry of Industry and are required to display this plate at the property entrance. Illegal workshops will have no such accreditation displayed.

The nameplate will display a variety of information relating to the work that can be done at the workshop.

For example, the top part of the plate will display the type of work which can be done on the premises. A picture of a wrench indicates mechanics, a jagged arrow indicates electrics, a hammer is for bodywork and a spray gun for painting.

Halfway up, on the left are icons which indicate areas of expertise, such as wheels and tyres, radiators or injection engines for example. To the right, an image will be displayed if the workshop is authorised to repair motorcycles.

Finally, at the bottom of the plate, there is a space which will display the provincial hallmark and the official registration number of the workshop as provided by the Ministry of Industry.

Although it will be difficult to ensure your complaints are heard in the event of using an illegal workshop, there is a way of reporting your suspicions to the authorities to investigate and take action against illegal operators. This can be done on the website of the confederation of Spanish workshops. CETRAA, at www.cetraa.com/sala-dedenuncia/ In 2014, CETRAA dealt with more than 340 complaints received through the website, ensuring a safer practice for all in the future.

Fresh Fruit Popsicles Ingredients 4 wooden popsicle sticks and popsicle molds. 1 kiwi, peeled and sliced. 1 cup strawberries, hulled and sliced . 1 peach, peeled and sliced (or 1/2 cup frozen or canned slices).

1/2 cup blueberries.

16 ounces coconut water or lemonade.

Directions Place sliced fruit into the popsicle molds. Place a stick into each mold. Pour coconut water or lemonade into each mold, leaving 1/2 inch of space at the top for expansion. Freeze for at least four hours. Serving Size: 4 popsicles; 1 per serving .

Raspberry-Lemon Scones Ingredients 4 tablespoons unsalted butter. 1/3 cup sugar. 2 eggs, beaten. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. 1/4 cup evaporated nonfat milk. Zest of 1 lemon. 3 cups white whole wheat flour. 1 tablespoon baking powder. 1/8 teaspoon salt. 1 1/4 cups frozen raspberries.

Directions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cream the butter in a mixing bowl. Slowly add the sugar and mix for 2 more minutes. Mix in the eggs, then add the vanilla, evaporated milk, and lemon zest.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix. Gently stir in the raspberries. Turn the dough onto the lined baking pan. Form into an 8-inch circle and cut into 12 equal wedges. Separate the wedges. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the tops are lightly browned..

Now the UK has a taste for gourmet fast food Like skinny jeans, or One Direction, Britain's obsession with American food is a trend that refuses to die.

(Ironic, really, given that skinny jeans and mega burgers are pretty much mutually exclusive for anyone not blessed with the metabolism of Zayn Malik.)

Giant cupcakes, skinny California rolls, Tex-Mex chimichangas and southern fried chicken – we mock super-sized US portions even as we stuff ourselves silly. But we've barely scratched the surface of this magnificent country; those 3,000 odd miles between New York and LA may as well be one huge food desert, as far as the British public are concerned. And many Americans share their opinion; one New Yorker I asked about midwestern cuisine told me: "It's all very mashed potatoes and chicken. Or beef. Whatever."

Yet this vast region stretching from the plains of North Dakota to the mountains of Ohio, the lakes of Michigan to the Kansas prairie, is the very heartland of American cooking. Chef Stephen Langlois, who was among the first to champion it, sums up midwestern food as "Thanksgiving dinner.

Turkey and cranberry sauce and wild rice and apple pie.

It's hearty American fare."

And Minnesotan chef and food writer Amy Thielen emphasises its rural roots, describing it as "a great tradition of American country cooking – rustic, gutsy and simple".

To be honest, the raw ingredients of good food aren't hard to come by in this staunchly agricultural area. The midwest is the breadbasket of the States, home to 31 million cattle and many more acres of corn – and (in the bits where the cows and corn aren't) forests full of wild berries, fungi and game.

Native American food traditions of hunting and foraging are still strong here, and each successive wave of

immigrants has left its culinary mark – the population has a Germanic love of sausages and cheese, a Scandinavian fondness for pickles, a taste for Polish pierogis and Cornish pasties, and some really excellent tacos.

In fact, though it may be rustic at heart, midwestern food scrubs up pretty well, too: in 2010, Esquire named Chicago the second best restaurant city in America, while Wahaca's Thomasina Miers was so excited by the capital of the midwest that she's opening a new east London diner inspired by her trip. Marks and Spencer's food product development team visited four times last year in search of new ideas.

Parents are 'poisoning' their children with sugary food and drink?

Parents must take responsibility for what their children eat and drink

Parents are "poisoning" their children by giving them too much sugary food and drink and must give them water, milk and fruit instead, the head of the

NHS has warned.

Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, said that parents must take "responsibility" or put their children at risk of diabetes,

heart disease and cancer.

He said that obesity is the "new smoking" and urged food manufacturers and supermarkets to do more to take sugar out of

When your children come home after school - it's water, or milk, not fizzy drinks or juice. Cut up apples not sugary bars.

We've got responsibilities in schools."

He added that the food industry must also take "huge responsibility". He said: "One in three of our teenagers are drinking high

energy, sugary drinks. I do think we're going to need reformulation to take sugar out of foods, in the same way that successfully that's happened with salt.

"Responsible retailers, food producers can smell the coffee here. They can see public attitudes are changing. If that doesn't happen then in effect what we're doing is a slow burner food poisoning through all of this sugar that goes on to cause cancer, diabetes, heart disease.

That's what we're doing to our kids, we've got to top it."

Issues Should you get your heart tested before a marathon?

Are you thinking about running a marathon or doing a mammoth bike ride in the coming months?

If so, preparation is crucial to get you in the best shape possible for the event. But while most amateurs know they need to swat up on training regimes, embrace stretching programmes and find the right equipment, many overlook one vital part of the preparation: their heart.

While endurance sports are considered to be safe forms of exercise, intense cardiovascular activity can result in sudden death for those who have a congenital heart defect or artery block-

age. It is estimated the the rate of incidence for heart attacks among marathon runners is one in every 150,000.

According to a new study, as part of your preparation you should get your heart tested to ensure that it ticks over smoothly. Importantly, the test should be done while you exercise.

In the research, published in the European Heart Journal, Professor André La Gerche from the University of Melbourne found that doctors who try to detect heartbeat irregularities by focusing on the heart while it rests could miss important signs of dysfunction.

Alongside colleagues in Australia and Belgium, Prof La Gerche tested the hearts of 34 people - 17 athletes who had known right ventricular arrhythmias, ten healthy athletes, and seven non-athletes. The scientists used different imaging techniques to analyse the heart while it rested and during exercise.

They found that the resting hearts of the 34 subjects produced similar results.

However, once the three groups began exercising, their hearts showed markedly different measurements, with the people who were known to have arrhythmias displaying clear signs of underlying issues.

The USGA is leading a push to make the world’s many handicapping systems uniform—and if it flies, it may affect your number if you happen to pop over to America for a quick round!

Let’s explain a bit more. Say you meet a 12-handicap golfer from Australia on the first tee at St. Andrews in Scotland, and if your U.S. handicap index also happens to be 12, you might suggest a friendly little money game, with no strokes given. Sadly that’s a bad move. That’s because Golf Australia, the sport’s governing body there, doesn’t calculate handicaps the

way that the U.S. Golf Association does. Handicap formulas also vary in Great Britain and Ireland, continental Europe, South Africa and Argentina. Similarly handicapped golfers from those regions won’t necessarily be better players than their U.S. counterparts, but they might be. There’s no way to know based simply on their index.

In three or four years, things could be different. The USGA is leading an effort to get the world’s six handicapping authorities on the same page. The U.S. handicap system, including the USGA’s course rating and

Slope system, would be the basis for the proposed World Handicap System, but it would incorporate the best elements from the other handicapping schemes.

Among the likely changes U.S. golfers would notice: daily adjustments to the handicap formula to reflect playing conditions. A 92 posted on a cold rainy day with howling wind would count for more than a 92 shot in calm conditions.

This initiative is the final piece in a long-term push for unified golf authority around the world. In the last decade or so, the USGA and its governing partner, the R&A (which oversees the game everywhere but in the U.S. and Mexico) have pretty much consolidated the game in three other areas:

the playing rules of golf, equipment regulations and most recently the code of amateur status.

The handicap system is effectively a fourth set of rules. Not all golfers keep a handicap, of course, but for those who do, the scoreposting requirements enforce a rules-like discipline. Yet those rules deviate from country to country.

It would benefit the game enormously, and add to its enjoyment, if golfers everywhere had a single, portable handicap number that worked the same wherever they traveled.

Simultaneously, the USGA and the R&A are working on a rules simplification project that would have a similarly unifying impact. Shorter, simpler and less legalistic is the final goal. If successfully completed, the new rules code would roll out in the same time frame as the World Handicap System and make extensive use of pictures, graphics and new modes of presentation using modern technology. The underlying principles would remain fundamentally the same, but the rules themselves would look and feel entirely different. Also on the horizon are clear new translations of the existing rules in multiple languages.

The USGA has overseen handicapping in the U.S. for more than a century and its system is by far the most

sophisticated in the world. In recent years, the roll call of countries outside the USGA’s jurisdiction that have voluntarily adopted its handicap system has grown to more than 30. Unlike the USGA, the R&A doesn’t function as a day-to-day national governing body and hasn’t been involved with handicapping. Its primary functions are to administer the rules of golf on behalf of roughly 150 organizations in 138 countries and to run the Open. The R&A long ago surrendered handicapping to the various regional authorities that sprang up,

competitive tournament rounds are used for handicaps. For many golfers, that may only be a handful of rounds per year. Stroke Indexes can be woefully out of date. In Australia, the predominate form of play, mostly in competitions, is in the Stableford format. Points are awarded for par, birdie, bogey and so forth. That system creates more incentive to take risks and less incentive to play out bad holes, since, as you know, any net score above double bogey earns zero points. All these cultural preferences impact the handicap index

and over time, those systems evolved to reflect local cultures.

In Argentina, for example, the vast majority of play takes place in club-sponsored competitions with strictly enforced rules. “No mulligans, no gimmes,” says the director for Latin America at the R&A. Another difference is the absence of equitable stroke control, which the USGA system includes.

In Argentina, if you hit two drives out of bounds and score a 12 on a hole, all 12 strokes count in calculating your handicap. In the U.S., the worst you can do on a hole for handicap purposes is limited on a sliding scale based on your index. It’s a pretty harsh system. You might reasonably expect a 10 handicap Argentinian to be a more consistent player than a 10 handicap American. In Great Britain and Ireland, usually only

that individual golfers carry.

They’re a long way down the road on the new system technologically. An international team of mathematicians and computer geeks has been working on it for more than two years, under the radar. But it’s still a work in progress. Ongoing discussions with the regional handicap authorities will try to accommodate how golf is played in different places, but the objective is for everyone eventually to handicap with the same system.

I’m personally optimistic that this will happen, in part because the USGA and the R&A will jointly bear the costs for maintaining and updating the new system.

Local golf organizations would still supervise handicaps and remain connected to their members. But it’s likely to take some selling, and that phase of the game is beginning as we speak.

BIENVENIDO RAFA

In hardly the most surprising sporting announcement of the week, Rafa Benitez was unveiled on Wednesday as the new coach of Real Madrid on a three-year contract.

The 55-year-old Spaniard takes over from Carlo Ancelotti, who was kicked out of the Bernabeu last week just 12 months after guiding the club to their 10th European Cup success.

Madrid-born Benitez has spent the past two seasons with Italian side Napoli, hav-

ing previously enjoyed success at European level with a number of clubs. After leading Valencia to UEFA Cup glory in 2004, the following year he moved to the Premier League and orchestrated Liverpool's Champions League victory at Istanbul in only his first season on Merseyside.

Two years later, he guided the Reds to another Champions League final and, in 2013, was interim boss at Chelsea when they won the

Europa League. At domestic level, he has won two La Liga titles with Valencia and an FA Cup at Anfield. Benitez, Real's eighth coach in 10 years, is returning to Madrid for a third spell in a coaching role having previously been in charge of their youth side in 1986 and their 'B' team in the early 1990s.

Madrid-born Benitez gave one of the shortest opening speeches of any coach taking over the club in the last 15 years.

‘It’s emotional to come home,’ he said. ‘I don’t know what to say. I want to make sure we win things and the team plays well.’

Benitez was presented as Madrid boss at a news conference on Wednesday lunchtime after a tour of the club's Valdebebas training ground. He passed up the chance to praise legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas, in what many will interpret as yet another indication that David De Gea will replace the Spain captain at the Bernabeu this summer.

He did laugh off the fact that he is Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’ tenth coach in 12 years saying: ‘Ten is a good number in Spain. La Decima (the tenth Champions League) was celebrated more than any other.

And if they give me a 10 as a mark I will be happy.’

Madrid’s president Perez is known for his ruthless hiring and firing policy, but Benitez appeared calm and confident when asked about the precarious nature of his new job.

He also ducked questions about Sepp Blatter and Raheem Sterling and won friends among local reporters by insisting on answering every question in Spanish.

‘Madrid is a huge club so it is always looking to sign the

best players. There are many different ways to win. We have to attack, score goals and win, if possible, by playing well’ he said of the plans he has as he takes over the club he first joined as a young player aged 13.

Real Madrid are likely to sign a left-back and a midfielder as well as De Gea but Benitez hinted that he would not have a huge part to play in deciding who comes in.

It was his 57th goal in all competitions this season and had football commentators the world over struggling to find the superlatives to describe it.

The Ilicitanos finished 13th in La Liga six points clear of the relegation places but should they be found guilty they will go down with 18th placed Eibar being reinstated in their place.

However, should the judge rule against Elche, Anguix said that the club would fight the decision all the way and it could be weeks or months before the matter is finally decided.

Despite their success on

the pitch this season, offfield matters have blighted the "Ilicitanos".

Last February, ex-president, José Sepulcre was banned for 18 months from football due to serious accountancy irregularities. Legal action was opened against the club for non-payment to the Spanish Football League and to the Elche players, a debt that has risen to six millions euros. The club has yet to pay Sevilla the full fee for the loan deal involving midfielder, Manu del Moral, whilst the Valencian regional moneylaundering commission is also investigating the club’s accounts.

Meanwhile, Elche manager, Fran Escribá, is the hot favourite to take over at Europa League champions, Sevilla, if the current boss Unai Emery takes over the top job at Napoli, vacated

by Rafa Benitez at Napoli.

Escribá earned major praise during the last season when he kept the Elche players focused on their battle for survival, even though they hadn’t been paid by the club in months.

The club currently only have 10 players committed to the team for next season, wherever that might be.

JOHN McGREGOR Arsene’s Red army announced adios to this season, formidably finishing with a fourfold flourish in the FA Cup Final, as Wenger’s winners won at Wembley for the second year running.

But I bet those Cup-happy Gooners wish their stars would play like they have done recently all season long and bring the Premier League title back to North London - like Arsene used to do at Highbury ten years ago. When they do get it right, as seen on Saturday evening, the Gunners look awesome. And I’m still confidently predicting Alexis Sanchez is going to be a future Arsenal legend, held in the sort of awed heroic esteem Gooners reserve for the likes of Thierry Henry and Denis Bergkamp.

At 1 – 0 down at half-time, a poor end-of-season-battered Aston Villa side still looked in with an outside chance, but only four minutes into the second half it was all over. Veteran Villa goalkeeper Shay Given had no chance in conceding a very special goal.

Sanchez’s thunderbolt did not look on at all as just inside the Villa half the Chilean twisted, turned, stepped forward and let fly from thirty yards. In the class of all-time great Cup Final goals, that one takes some beating. This man is one exceptional footballer, and with him Cazorla, Ramsey, Walcott and a sound defence, then next year just could be one of Arsenal’s finest - but surely not another flatter-todeceive one, please? Oh and btw, Arsene – get rid of Jack Wilshere. He’s a foulmouthed, immature little trouble-maker who’s always injured- and you don’t need him. There, I’ve said it!

Always look on the bright

side - that’s my message for everyone connected with Aston Villa. Just think on this: at least you got to the FA Cup Final, which all bar one FA team didn’t - and you beat some good sides on the way. And much, much more importantly – you’re still in the Prem. With those last few poor results it’s a good job you did win a few crucial ones under Tim Sherwood. Next season is next season, so have a rest, Villains, put your feet up – and come back very hungry…

One said he thought a bung was something to plug the hole under his £1m yacht and when questioned further said didn’t everyone’s wife have a chauffeured Lamborghini to take the kids to school?

Actually, if you haven’t heard the latest, all the FIFA bribery and corruption charges have been lifted. The FBI man in charge of the case said: ‘It’s all a mistake; they were trumped-up charges and have been dismissed.

Now I’m off for a welldeserved holiday on my Russian yacht; I’m staying with friends in Qatar’ he said before jumping into his new Porche.

Seriously though, you have to ask yourself – how did Blatter survive for 17 years with the increasing might of the deadly Western media out for his blood? Well, the man may be very unpopular in big European countries like England, Holland and Germany, but it must also be understood why Blatter’s European unpopularity is not the case in many other countries particularly those small ones who have benefitted from FIFA’s money.

Why did much of the football world keep voting for the man? Well, nowhere is

Sepp Blatter's support stronger than across Asia and Africa, so actually it’s simple: the man is seen as a hero in those nations, both as Secretary General and then as FIFA president, he helped encourage the boom in football in their countries. In doing so he raked in billions of dollars from wealthy, multinational companies like Coca Cola and McDonalds.

Amaju Pinnick, president of the Nigerian Football Federation, said: ‘Blatter feels Africa, he sees Africa and he has imparted so much - a lot of developmental programmes. Without Blatter we wouldn't enjoy all the benefits we enjoy today from FIFA. What Blatter pushes is equity, fairness and equality among the nations. We don't want to experiment.’

A football minnow, Chad has benefited from 26 projects undertaken by the world governing body of football: artificial pitches, a technical centre, a new HQ for the federation - but also education seminars on marketing, refereeing, grassroots football and so on. The list is long. That pattern is repeated across Africa and around the world.

Blatter made sure significant amounts of the cash from sponsors was spent in pretty much every football nation that can spend it, and that, of course earned him a huge amount of support. So is it any real surprise that if those countries believed Blatter gave them those benefits why would they not vote for him?

Ah, but all 209 FIFA member countries have an equal say in the vote, regardless of size or

football pedigree. Those countries each have one vote, just like England and that is what sticks in the throat of our football nation.

We English wail that it’s just not cricket, is it?

There’s no proportional representation and all that sort of modern politicallycorrect ‘fairness’. Despite the Royal, governmental and football icon might of Prince William, David Cameron and David Beckham and a wellplanned presentation England still lost the 2018 World Cup and their pride to Russia, amid AngloSaxon mutterings of ‘Fix, mate… ‘ere, we invented the game and gave it to the world, din’t we?’

Worse was then to have salt rubbed on our open smarting wound when the 2022 World Cup was then awarded to a hardlyknown tiny desert kingdom of 2.2 million population – Qatar. That does not makes sense to English sensitivities. N.B. note this is primarily an English attitude, not necessarily shared by our smaller Celtic cousins - who are not so vehemently antiBlatter. Perhaps the pendulum will swing the other way now the truth is finally being Blazed out for all to

see…

Now with Blatter at last resigned, the forthcoming timing is crucial: at their weekend meeting UEFA president Michel Platini must show strong leadership to unite Europe.

UEFA has to stand up and lead by demanding new transparent systems within FIFA well before the next World Cup, to weed out situations that led to the bribery and corruption in the old set-up.

UEFA had supported Prince Ali's bid, but reports suggest as many as 18 European nations, including 2 0 1 8 World Cup h o s t s Russia, France and Spain, voted for Blatter.

Now those big footballing countries must change their support and attitudes, gearing themselves towards obtaining a new leader and a fairfor-all-to-see structure.

Russia itself is/was a

staunch supporter of Mr Blatter too: Moskovskiy Komsomolets is one of several Russian newspapers which describe the US charges against FIFA officials as politically motivated. With anti-American stances like that the European nations have a problem, as the self-styled w o r l d

police, aka the FBI wade into the FIFA suspects with their boxes of files and arrest warrants that were Chucked out of their offices. Can the phoenix of a new, honourable FIFA rise from the ashes of Sepp Blatter’s administration, in time for the next World Cup? We will soon see.
