A
large passenger ferry between Palma in Mallorca and Valencia City caught fire on Tuesday lunchtime, but nobody was seriously injured. The Sorrento was 24 kilometres out from Palma when the blaze broke out, but all 157 passengers and crew were whisked to safety. All bar two were transferred to another member of the Trasmediterránea fleet, The Puglia, which was diverted from its journey between Ibiza and Barcelona to help with the
rescue operation, and returned people to Palma. Two people were airlifted to hospital in Mallorca:- a 25-year-old Italian woman who suffered mild smoke inhalation and a Philippine man who had a panic attack, both of whom since been discharged. Three crew members were also said to have suffered from smoke inhalation. A total of 12 nationalities (none were British) were travelling on the Sorrento, and around 80 of them were lorry drivers who were returning to Valencia with their vehicles. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

…AND HERE’S ANOTHER! Ten families have been left homeless after a fivestorey flat collapsed in the Carrús area of Elche on Monday afternoon, but only one person was injured with no fatalities. Only the front wall remained, with the roof, floors and all other walls having fallen down, but nobody was trapped in the rubble. A 30 year old woman was taken to hospital with a twisted ankle, whilst two children were taken to Vinalopó
hospital, for observation as a precaution. Emergencies councillor, Manuela Mora, said that it was a miracle that there were no serious injuries, as the five storeys collapsed like a set of dominoes. Most people fled the block when a small roof initially caved in, before the rest of the building collapsed. Authorities are working on the basis that rotting concrete beams were behind the drama.
