CAMERA SHY MOST WANTED BRIT IN “BODY BAG” QUIZ ALEX TRELINSKI

A

British man wanted in connection with the murder of 25 year old Francis Brennan, whose body was found wrapped in plastic on La Zenia beach last year, has been arrested in a swoop by the Guardia Civil. Guardia officers linked up with members of the UK National Crime Agency to raid a Javea villa on the Northern Costa Blanca, where 54 year old Paul Monk was arrested under Operation Captura, which seeks to bring British criminals on the run in Europe to justice back in

the UK. He was wanted on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cocaine and cannabis after he was allegedly involved in the handover of cocaine in Cockfosters, north London, in May 2013, amongst other drug offences. But Monk’s extradition to the UK is being postponed over the investigation into the kidnap and murder of Brennan last year. His body was discovered in a heavily-taped plastic bag on La Zenia Beach in March 2014, some three months after he went missing, having been “kidnapped” in Javea by three men pretending to be Spanish police officers, His

feet were tied to a concrete block to make him sink and the body disappear, but it wasn’t clear whether he was already dead when thrown into the sea. Mr Brennan fled the UK for Spain ahead of a sentencing date in October 2013 for an assault he committed in the Thames Valley area the previous year. The Guardia and NCA officers dropped in on Paul Monk last week as he oversaw workmen laying a marble patio around the swimming pool of his luxury Javea villa. Dramatic footage of the arrest, which shows armed officers swooping in on the property and discovering an imita-

tion firearm and bundles of cash worth 125 thousand euros, was released by the Guardia on Tuesday. The Guardia had been staking out Monk’s four-bedroomed villa for a number of weeks after they had received tipoffs from local people, culminating with Monk’s appearance a few weeks ago on the latest Operation Captura list. A spokesman said that Monk was careful not to leave his Javea hideout, getting other people to do his shopping and errands, but he wasn’t expecting his doorstep visitors that led to his arrest and an appearance in front of a Denia judge. continued on page 2
