the trouble with spain

Religion

I think I’ve mentioned before that when it comes to religion the Spanish can be a tad hypocritical? I know that we all are at times – how often have you prayed to Him, promising to believe if he’ll just get you out of a mess, just this once? Or proudly hearing the girlfriend shout ‘oh my God!’ as you make love… only to discover that she’s seen a spider on the ceiling… but what other country, that professes to be catholic, gets through as many condoms as the Spanish? I’ll tell you, none. When it comes to practicing sex (safe or not) the Spanish are up there with the notorious French, and rabbits. Having said that, the local priest will be revered and spoken to as if he were God himself – until he’s gone, and then they can say what they really think. Nearly every shop, business, workplace and toilet has an image of Jesus (or it could be Billy Connolly) plastered to the wall, although none of them are signed so I guess that rules Billy out… But take a look at their cars and it’s no wonder they have the highest accident rate in Europe. Their windscreens and dashboards are chock-a-block with Jesus merchandising - Nike could do worse than having a word with the Pope about spreading the brand name – from rosaries to enormous crosses (bearing the not too chuffed Jesus) and what look like, but can’t be, photos of ‘our saviour.’ If they

can see through that lot while chatting, and looking at, their passenger then good luck to them. Or do they really believe that God will watch over them? If he does, he’s not watching too closely is he? When it comes to religion, I think perhaps the Spanish have got it about right. Use it for days off and to celebrate the Virgin birth by getting totally smashed. Commemorate the conquering of a local town but make the commemoration last considerably longer than it probably took anyway and allow kids to walk around with small explosives in their hands. Just one word of warning, if you are travelling in a car driven by a Spaniard be careful and watch the road for him because with his religious artifacts stuck on the dashboard it’s quite possible that the last thing you’ll see is someone resembling Billy Connolly as your face smashes you into the dash…and don’t have an open coffin as the last thing you (or your family) want is an image of the Big Yin on your forehead…and a ‘TOYOTA’ impression next to it.

STOP TXTING ME!

D

id you know that you can now opt out from receiving that pain in the derriere commercial calls and messages to your land line or mobile phone in Spain. If you, like me, are just about up to your eyeballs and fed up with sales calls to your phone in Spain, you can do something about it by registering out of such calls and messages with a new service which was launched in Spain recently. Apparently those dear old friends of ours at Telefonica (spit!) are now sending out letters saying they take it as read that they can send you commercial SMS messages to your mobile phone.

Even if you are not with Movistar, Telefónica (spit!) often has your mobile phone number from earlier customer services contacts and they advise in the letter that you can opt out online from receiving such promotional messages by going to a web page, entering your mobile phone number and clicking on three boxes. Now this will shock you as we all know that Telefonica (spit!) are about as efficient as an ashtray on a motorbike and unfortunately the URL of the webpage given in the letter is incorrect. So we thought we’d do the decent thing a supply you with the right one.

fact that it’s a free process to register but you will need an email account to complete the registration process after which you can sign in and choose which areas you want to be covered in the scheme. Under Spanish data protection laws, any company making commercial calls in Spain is now obliged to first check the Robinson List before they make any commercial call to you – so you should get some peace. How to stop commercial SMS messages from Telefónica (spit!) The correct page to opt out of such commercial messages is at www.telefonica.es/ consentimientomovil Then you can lie back in the sun again and think of England if you wish…or Scotland, Ireland, Wales…

The Robinsons Lists have existed in Spain for postal mail since 1993, but have now been extended to land line and mobile phones, as well as to email for the first time and even better is the

gran alacant Councillor for Gran Alacant & the Popular Party

LORETO CASCALES Dear friends, Once again here I am to inform you about the important things going on in Gran Alacant. Fristly, I would like to say I am really proud of the race that we had in Gran Alacant last month called “Abel Antón”. I would like to say that it was a great success and that although we had the double number of runners that we expected, the organisation was ready for this figure and everything went very well. It was amazing to see around 1.000 people running at the same time going out from the starting point and it was also incredible see more than 1.000 children with their parents or without them running around the commercial centre area. We started four years ago with a modest race and now we have a very important event that can became an important race in the area. We will need more people helping in the organisation of the race for next year because we can see we will have more people participating in this event. So, if you would like to help us next year, please, do not hesitate to contact me at the Municipal Office to take your name and call you for the race of next year. You can see also we have started already the new municipal park that will be the first one in Gran Alacant. I can assure you it is going to be very nice and comfortable to stay. I hope that you will like it and enjoy it when it will be completely finished. We are making a big effort to have a park good for anybody, of any nationality or any age. We are also working now in the Carabasís avenue, at the Clot de Galvany and you can see we have put more trees and we have made already the ways wo walk along the area. You have been able also to see that we have installed benches and bins along the recently finished pavements in Avenida Mediterráneo and Avenida Noruega. We have also installed watering systems along the trees recently planted in these two avenues mentioned above that will make possible that these trees will grow quicker. Just to finish, to let you know we are making a very big effort with Urbaser (the company in charge to pick up the rubbish from the containers) and I would like to ask all of you to be careful with the sorrounding area, try to keep clean our streets and containers and be very careful with your dogs because our policemen are going to be stronger with the fines if they catch you doing something that is not right. Thank you very much to all of you and speak (or better write again) next month.

WATCH OUT.. !!! She’s back!

Hi guys

maureen’s about!

it’s that time of the month again to tell you what’s going on in Gran Alacant. Well apart from the new park being built opposite the post office and the finishing of the new pavements their does not seem to be much going on. So after last months rant about certain visitors to my urb. I would like to tell you about a group of residents lead by Murphy of sol builders. There were Brits Spanish Dutch Columbian Swedish and other nationalities who took over a piece of spare ground that was overgrown and being used as a dumping ground. In all the heat of august and September they worked day and night clearing the ground then building two Paranaque courts, four grass areas, planted trees shrubs, A huge rockery which they planted with Cacti they painted walls made paths and painted the gates. People were coming and donating trees, plants, shrubs, sand and money as word got round about the secret garden people started to ask if they could help and the bars in sierra mar namely Dick Turpin, Legends and Chasers sent money to help with the cost and Criss Wilson who works for City Electrical Factors in the U K Persuaded his bosses to donate lights and all the fittings and pay the shipping costs to Spain. Where Mike Jemison took over and installed it all finishing it all of just minutes before the opening ceremony. I would personally like to thank every one who helped in any way to give us this Oasis in the concrete jungle we live in. It has restored my faith in the human race and goes to prove that when we work in harmony we can get over predudices. So I would like to say god bless you all and lets build on this and make this A good community to live in. have A nice day ya all Mo. Today Spain has more then 146 acknowledged vine varieties, making Spain one of the most varied wine cultures in the world. The Garnacha grape is the most common red grape in Spain while among white grapes the most popular is Airén, which is also the most commonly grown grape in the world. Did you know that Spain has over 650,000 hectares of vines? No…neither did I, here’s what else we found out. It is believed that there are up to 600 different Spanish grape varieties, although 80% of the country’s vineyards are planted with just over 20 of them. producers of the “Uvas de Mesa Aledo”, a particular eating grape to this area which is sought by exporters for the tables of the whole of Europe. Supermarket chains in UK buy direct from La Romana vineyards including those of Jose Miguel and Mari Carmen who are Directors of Katania. Wine in this region is in abundance and can be bought from the Bodegas for as little as 60cents per litre and is excellent.

One of the largest in the region is Bodegas Cerdá which was founded in 1885 in Hondón de las Nieves, Alicante and from its very beginnings, the family nature of the company, an attentive service to their customers and a fine taste for quality wine have been their tradition.

ega Take a trip out to this place and see the impressive new facilities that include a Wine Museum, a tasting room (yes!) and restaurant, a shop for wine and traditional products as well as the production and bottling hall where you can witness the magical world of wine making. Bodegas Cerdá is now in the modern age with the latest technology in processing and bottling their wines and with a laboratory that controls the necessary parameters to be able create top quality wines. They even have enormous underground vaults, set at a constant set temperature where the wines rest and grow in flavour in American and French oak barrels. We live in a wine growing region and we owe it to ourselves, do we not, to take a visit to one of the many Bodegas of the region and immerse ourselves in the ancient culture and customs of

We had a number of customers tell us that they could not get through to our old “700” number so we have changed it to the number that you see at the bottom of this page – 902 906 200. In the last month there have been a couple of major new releases that you may be interested in hearing about. AVG have upgraded their award winning, free (for non-commercial use) antivirus software and a “small” software company called Microsoft have released a new version of their operating system called Windows 7. In these picture logic puzzles, cells in a grid have to be filled or left blank to reveal a hidden picture. The puzzle is solved using number sequences at the side and bottom of the grid which describe how many unbroken lines of filled-in squares there are in each row and column. For example, the numbers “8.5.6” next to a row, would mean the row contains sets of eight, five and six filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups. K9 Club Animals For Adoption On the 1st March 2009 Timmy was brought to us in a terrible state, we all thought he wouldn’t pull through as his body had detoriated so much to the point that he couldn’t stand. He had heartworm which was treated and has Leishmaniosis for which he receives a tablet daily. He h a s now fully recovered and is available for adoption. He is approx 4 years old Chihuahua cross, is vaccinated and housetrained. He is great with other dogs and cats and will make someone a perfect little lap dog. Ray was dumped from a car and it then sped off. He was covered from head to toe in ticks and fleas. He is a quiet timid little dog but his tail wags as soon as anyone pays him a little attention. He stayed in the animal hospital for three nights and did not mess in his pen. He is approx 3 years old and will make a great companion. Cleo is one of the two cats that was discovered in a green basura (bin) when someone went to take out their rubbish. She spent a night in the animal hospital and a received a full examination. She is 6 months old, in very good condition and now available for adoption. Hope is a 7 month old female Terrier cross. I would like to express you my biggest complaint about the article written in your last magazine - Nº 68. I am a Spanish woman and I do not agree about the unreal and, untrue and full of rubbish article written by a not very “clever head”. If you mean that it is so bad here, why you do not go back to your “levely country”???????? The fiestas are in our culture and nobody is going to give that bad image about my culture and Country. It is something that is very low and nasty, the same that to say that the “ ...fiestas are really apart an excuse to buy a plastic guitat from a doggy looking vendor who gives the impression that he’ll come and sleal it later...” or “ fiestas just allow Dads to play dress upand the prirates once again, and for families to spend time together while the youngsters of Spain get happily drunk not only on the booze but on the sheer hell of it...”””” And you, English or not - doesn’t matter, to talk about drunk people when youforeigners- are the first that every time are coming to Spain don’t do another think that drink 24 hrs and give so lot of problems in all bars, Hotels and places where you go???? and also in the football??? We are tired to see in the tv programs about british and foreiners how they are when the are here, not a good example at all. I will give you an advise - take it or not, do not care - never say bad about the countries where you live or spend your holidays, it is not so nice. I have been in many countries, also in England, and not many are and example of behavior. Sincerely yours, A very proud woman to be Spanish.

Wow…! Sorry to have upset you Maria, but I think you’ll find that you missed the point…by a country mile, or kilometre if you prefer – the article was actually about how the Spanish have got it right when it comes to fiestas. ED.

The money will be used to add equipment to the new vehicle. The group have already donated €4.500 over the last 18months to this very worthy cause which certainly helps save lives in the La Marina & San Fulgencio area.

IFE Time’ for new initiative in Guardamar

Guardamar Town Council and the British Consulate in Alicante jointly presented the ‘Timebanking’ initiative last week in the town’s Casa de Cultura. Participants listened as British Consul, Janine Lamont and Guardamar Councillor, Mari- Carmen Rastoll co-hosted the event with the town’s Lady Mayor, Marylène Albentosa, offering warm words of welcome to the Consulate and to all of the potential volunteers. The ‘Timebanking’ initiative is a result of several months of planning and discussions – and is particulary unique to Guardamar, given its partnership with the Foreign and commonwealth Office. The initiative is aimed at both Spanish and non Spanish residents – and is an attempt to improve integration and communication through volunteering. The system, with ‘time’ as the currency is about ‘giving’ and ‘receiving’ – and where all of the ‘time’ offered is held in a ‘banking’ resource. As Councillor Rastoll explained’ We want as many people as possible to get involved in the project. It is a positive way to do something for someone and to get something back in return. This helps create active communities and promotes positive citizenship. We have been discussing the project for some time now – and it’s really exciting that we are now able to unveil the start of our pilot project. The Town Hall will do all it can to support the initiative’ A comment echoed by Consular Staff who will be working alongside Guardamar Town Council in promoting the new scheme. Participants have now signed up as potential volunteers – with some offering to take on the role of co-ordinator for the initiative. All contacts will be followed up and another meeting will be set up to recruit future potential volunteers. Anyone interested in finding out more about the initiative is asked to contact Guardamar’s Tourist Information Office in the town square or call them on 965724488.

An Andalucían Adventure In May, my husband and I had a few days away in the Sierra de Segura. We had such a great time I was inspired to write about our trip. We left our Gran Alacant home at 11.00am on a bright Sunday morning on our way to the village of Los Teatinos in the Jaé n province of Andalucía. We headed across country to join the A7 motorway at Crevillente. The first part of the journey was a breeze, consisting of the A7 motorway to Murcia, the C415 motorway to Caravaca de La Cruz and a good twoway road to Puebla de Don Fabrique.

consisting of traditional English home cooked food, we headed off for a short evening stroll. It was so peaceful with the only noise being the sound of birdsong, bleating sheep and goat bells (like cow bells but worn by goats!) Refreshed after a good sleep and a cooked breakfast we set off, with a well used map and some directions from Mel, towards Embalse de Tranco (Tranco Reservoir). Just as we left Los Teatinos we made a short stop to look at a local gorge, a beautiful place, with a small stream. We drove up and down the road a few times hunting for my husband’s sunglasses which he had placed on the roof of the car, eventually finding them in the middle of the road! We made another stop along the new road towards Hornos del Segura, to see the source of the Segura River, which eventually reaches the sea at Guardamar.

At Puebla de Don Fabrique we turned right onto the mountain road towards Santiago de la Espada. From here it was just 38 kilometres to our destination, but it seemed longer as we were now climbing up and over the mountain on a very winding road. The scenery here was amazing with rocky outcrops, pine woods and the occasional grassy clearing. Eventually, the road began to descend and we passed a large green sign welcoming us to the Jaén Province and crossed a bridge over a small river. From here it was just a few miles to the turn-off to La Matea. We drove through this small village and were at last at the Rosa Blanca B & B www.rosablancabnb.com on the edge of the hamlet of Los Teatinos, a journey of around three hours and 241 kilometres, or about 150 miles.

We continued our journey and turned off the main road at the village of La Platera. Passing the village we arrived at the lake and stopped in the pine woods for a picnic. A short scramble down to the lake revealed a meadow of wild flowers, including various orchids. After lunch we headed back in the direction we had come, continuing round the lake before heading uphill through the little town of Hornos del Segura where we had great views down to the lake, before driving up and over the mountain on the old road back towards the town of Santiago de Espada.

What a place! Set in a valley of small villages, hamlets and farmland, and surrounded by mountains it really is a spectacular location! We were surprised to learn that the altitude here is about the same height as the peak of Ben Nevis! On arrival at the B & B we were welcomed by our hosts, Mel and Wendy, who offered us a choice of refreshments. We opted for a most welcome cup of tea with biscuits, and enjoyed watching goldfinches in the garden. Having recovered from the journey we were keen to explore the immediate area and headed off up the hill opposite. Griffon Vultures could be seen flying over the nearby peaks and sheep and goats were roaming the hillside. After a rest, a shower and an excellent three course meal,

By Mary Brazier

The following day Mel showed us some caves containing amazing, and presumably, quite ancient cave paintings which have probably been seen by relatively few people, this being such an isolated spot. All too soon it was time for us to head home and so we set off over the mountain once again. All in all an excellent trip and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys mountain scenery, country walks, wild flowers, butterflies, birds and other wildlife.

YOUR STARS

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Anvils, molten steel, but not oversized hammers, are moderately starred this month, as are oversized hats and trombones. Women who inadvertently purr and men who grunt are badly starred particularly in the shower. Beware the tolling of the bell for which you previously asked who it tolled for. Nothing good will come of it. Ernest Hemingway tops the charts of dead writers that are enticingly priced reads you should avoid this month, at least until Saturn transects a trajectory of literary significance.

Falling off, under, and over things are periodically well starred this month, following Saturn’s summer activity vacation at a combined television movie stunt and pro wrestling course.

Horse whinnying, neighing and snorting are all horsy sounds set to pepper an otherwise not particularly horsy filled month this September. Avoid running and jumping onto the back of a horse and shouting ‘giddy up!’ into well through dusk of the third Thursday of November. Nose flicking and ear boxing are two ancient sports set to reappear surreptitiously in your ESPN dominated viewing schedule this month. Flushing the toilet on the 18th could be misconstrued by aliens from another planet or UFOs flying past the window at the time. Flush quickly and confidently to avoid unwelcome attention and difficult to dislodge metallic probes.

Mar 20 - Apr 19

July 23rd - August 23rd

This month the newly rested Saturn is set to teach you that, as your age progresses in the inadvertent as well as professional stunt industry, the successful fall is the one in which you successfully hide the full pain you are in at the end of it. Nobody wants to hear the kind of ‘aaarrgghhhh’ of honest excruciating pain regardless of what they may claim.

Taurus

Capricorn

Apr 20 - May 19

Your rugged Taurean good looks and widely acknowledged effortlessness in any heroic encounters, are set to mark this month as one of mayhem set at bay. Avoid your newfound urge to fly building to building, back flips and running fast at high altitudes especially when fighting any bald or shaven headed foes. A popular cleaning product will disappoint when trying to remove a tomato ketchup stain from your cape at noon on the 17th. Snakes and antelopes are surprising bedfellows during a surprise twist of fate on the 23rd of the month at around tea time. Moonlit walks and kissing are well starred unless you are in Afghanistan or Iraq airspace.

Gemini

May 22nd - June 21st Roaring, saying ‘argh!’ and stabbing your hand in the air threateningly, are all starred upwards of 7 on the appropriate scale for more times than not this month. Drinks in tall elegant glasses that are served automatically with cherries and olives are perfectly starred at last, following a period of poor planetary attention. Hangovers in particular are set to lessen by up to 0.4% as the month progresses with Jupiter picking up the celestial tab. War movies in which Jake Gyllenhaal stars are so badly starred that in Ireland the leprechauns will be placarding the movie theatres in which any film he has out at the moment is being shown. It’s a shame because he put in a lot of hard work in bulking up his physique for the movie.

Cancer

June 22nd - July 22nd A movie with an overwhelmingly blue hue which involving lots of blue sea, toplessness and women in bikinis, are well starred, particularly for our Bermuda and Hawaiian readers. Geronimo!, Yahoo! and Wackoff! are all now internet adopted exclamations you should treat with care until the cock crows for the 6th of September. Chipmunks, especially the Walt Disney Chip and Dale types (including all of their furry relations) are so badly starred it is a best to delay any picnics in national parks in which you intend to sit on a yellow blanket with a brown picnic basket filled with delicious treats.

November 23rd - December 21st

December 22nd - January 20th

Virgo

Aug 23 - Sept 21

A granny style woman with a hair bun, flowery blouse and fat flat brown shoes with the same color brown flower on the tip toe, is set to provide moments of cookie and cup cake based solace in an otherwise cake baran month. On the positive side, somebody’s amazingly bad fortune is about to provide you with a piece of well needed good fortune this month. Luckily you have no idea the pain your good fortune has been won from the misfortunes of others. Magic, involving rabbits appearing unexpectedly behind enraptured pre teens ears, should not pull your eyes off the road at various times on the 18th.

Libra

September 23rd - October 23rd Hair extensions and hand held hairdryers (when set to their lowest temperature setting) are both starred well in as far as it is possible to tell, although settings hot to ultra hot and above are too difficult to read. Take precautions and be ready to re-wet your hair at the smallest of smoky warnings. A quest over mountainous terrain, icy slopes and/ or watery crevices are abjectly undesirably starred, especially when sweepy classical orchestral music with a lacklustre urgentness is playing in the background. Take an mp3 player and play hip hop with a loudness as if your very life depends on it.

Scorpio

October 24th - November 22nd Singing jaunty, uplifting, songs over/through/ around the camp fire, and scaring youngsters with ghost stories are both adequately starred, as Mercury is keen to scare others from afar. Puppets, especially hand puppets worked from underneath a table to the amusement of young children, are set to give the performer a well needed lesson on excruciating back and neck pains. (Advice for back pain suffering puppeteers: Ensure that your reaction to the first loud click/crack heard coming from your back is heeded with humility and avoid any attempts at any attitude approaching ‘the show must go on.’ - No the show must end now, badly if necessary.)

After last month’s intrigue with a person who looks 25% like a movie star, this month you are set to encounter a person with a self improvement program that promises a movie star-like body in 6 easy weeks. Unfortunately the body the person is referring to is Dick Cheney’s, and not Taylor Lautner or Steven Strait that you might reasonably assume he meant. But he didn’t. Read the small print at all times, especially sections 4 thru 8.2. Power pack Abs planetary tip: 1000 sit ups a day will, over time, give you a ripped ab physique that will be welcomed by any self respecting Men’s Health cover magazine editor... but the downside of this is that sit ups mean looking at your knees a lot - something to think about in the months it will take to make your abs as hard as your elbows...

Aquarius

January 21st - February 18th An Olympic inspired month on many levels. Jumping up, down and sideways with jugs filled with liquid, especially sticky sugary liquids, are hilariously badly starred this month - ensure someone is videoing you at all times. There is an evens chance you could become a YouTube sensation with a jump on or around the 5th of September. From a video production standpoint, your stars could not be better. The planetary alignment that Aquarius basks in this month means that recording anything will go over 6% better than usual (Hitchcock never did better than 2%).

Pisces

February 19th - March 20th After last month’s interest in all things French, now may be the time to try some more homely cooking. Man cannot live by garlic snails alone, even though Saturn thinks they are absolutely delicious and the smell is mouthwatering from about 25 billion miles away. Sleeping in the open is well starred as long as a hole hasn’t appeared in your roof all of a sudden. If it has then it is very very badly starred, especially if you can see Mars - planks of wood may be your only solution.
