unsuspecting ex-pat) that unless you belt around town with screeching tyres and follow the bus through the changing lights (‘they were still amberish love’) you don’t have much of a chance of making it. Many times, when I used to deliver rental cars, I would ask a local where a particular street was, only for him to scratch his head, before shaking it, and giving me a (truly) regretful ‘sorry.’ Compare that to any British town or village and you will damn near get a grid reference from a local who will, (in my village they did…) not only give you directions, but also fill you in on any developments in that household, whether you wanted to know or not. I’m not saying the Brit way is right, or even better because when you think about it, the Spanish have probably got it right. When you ask them why they don’t know the name of a street a hundred meteres from their front door the answer is always the same, ‘because I don’t use that road…’ they don’t feel the need to know…they worry about their immediate vicinity and that’s about it. It’s either that, or knowing the Spanish sense of humour, they know exactly where we want to go…but wouldn’t it be fun to see a load of ‘Guirees’ flying around the province, glancing at their watches and saying ‘grassius’ every time they get sent to the other end of the street to ask again…

An Autovia is the same as the Autopista – but there are no tolls. A Carretera Nacional - which is prefixed fix with N or CN, indicates a major road and a maximum speed of 90 KPH, whereas a Carretera Comarcal (prefix C) is considered a minor road with a speed limit of 50 KPH. That leaves the Carretera Local which is a rural road and has the same limit of 50 KPH and the Urbano which is a road in a built up area and which restricts vehicles to 20 KPH. If you should decide that - for some really important reason - you need to break the speed limit, the Guardia, if they catch you, will quite happily give you a fine based on the speed you were flying along at to save the cat from starving. The latest info I have is that it is 6€ for every kilometre over the limit. Other offences are calculated, more or less, at the discretion of the officer present. (See what I said earlier…be nice…) The other thing to remember before I go is that if you have a foreign registered car and are doing something illegal – such as parking on a yellow kerb etc. you will get towed. A foreign car, illegally parked, is not a good idea. In fact, slapping an officer on the backside, with a banjo, may be less problematic. And, if you’ve got a rent a car, don’t think that you’ll blend in like the natives. They are as easy to spot as white stilettos in Essex and will enjoy the same treatment as a foreign car. The reason? The authorities know that, one way or another, they will get the fines paid.

If that hasn’t put you off driving then tune in next month when we’ll be talking about those curious beasts that flock onto the road, slowing everyone down, and always travel in a herd…yes…bloody cyclists…

GRAN ALACANT BUSINESS GROUP GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH For businesses in Gran Alacant who, as everywhere, are experiencing the downturn that is affecting everyone and, seemingly, everything, there can’t be many things more important for them to do this year than to join this highly motivated group of people who have strong ideas and thoughts about getting things done in the area. From nothing a couple of months ago, and following some hard work in getting the group set up officially, they are now numbering nearly forty, and as the Mayor, Miguel Zaragoza managed to say so eloquently, ‘the more you are, the stronger you are.’ The business group was officially unleashed to a packed press room in Santa Pola’s town hall on the 24th of February, announcing its intentions and receiving the support of the council. Attending were the business group committee, and several members, of the 37 strong group that plans to put Gran Alacant firmly on the tourist map. ‘Many people come to Santa Pola and do not even know that Gran Alacant exists, let alone what it has to offer,’ said the group’s president, Jose Luis Campillo of JLCA lawyers. He also outlined what the group was all about and put forward a powerful argument about why the group would be even better because of the multi-national membership. He went on to inform the gathered press that the group plan to work hard to get Gran Alacant known to people, not only locally, but throughout the Valencian region and beyond. LORETO CASCALES Councillor for Gran Alacant & the Popular Party

Hello to all of you again, It is a pleasure again to be able to write for you. I would like to take the opportunity I have to let you know that as I promised you in the edition of this magazine of December, the new trees in Avenida Escandinavia and Mediterráneo have been already planted. The neighbours were asking me to plant more trees on the area and we are doing that now. We have invested 34.665,80 € in trees on this occasion but we will have more in Gran Alacant little by little. It is very important for me to have more green areas and you will see that this will become a reality. Another important aim I would like to inform you of is that from next month till the month of June you will be able to enjoy new activities we have arranged for you at the new Municipal Halls at the Life Resort Complex. You will be able to join us and start some new pastimes. You are going to be able to practice the following activities: 1. Pilates (like stretching gymnastics) for 20 € per month two days a week. (there are several timetables at your disposal). 2. Keep-fit gymnastics for 45 € every three months three days a week. 3. Dancing classes for 48 € every four months one day a week. 4. Sevillanas classes (very typical Spanish dancing) for 60 € every four months one day a week. 5. Modern dancing classes for 60 € every four months one day a week. You will be able to book your place for the activity or activities you prefer at the International Library of Gran Alacant (there you will find also the information you may require and you will be able to sort out any doubt you may have), or you can call to 96.669.71.10. I would like to invite all of you to participate. I hope this will be good for you. I will be informing you in other future editions of other type of activities we are arranging for you. Lastly, I would like also to inform you that the new viewpoint I told you about in the last edition of Jungle Drums in February (that is located in the Avenida Mediterráneo going to the beach) will be started in a few weeks. This is going to be an investment of 8.468 € and it is going to allow people to rest a little bit on their way to the beach. The two new petanca areas will be started also soon. They are going to be in Avenida Escandinavia and Avenida Noruega and I hope you like them and you use them as well (this is going to be an investment of around 22.000 €).

If you have any questions that you would like to ask Loreto - pop along to the municipal centre in GA and make an appointment to see her. You’ll find her extremely helpful, and don’t worry - she apeaks English!

I hope you enjoyed last month’s article. As promised here are a few more downloads that you can get free from the Internet. Backup / Productivity Tools Allway Sync – www.allwaysync.com

This is another backup tool, this time for keeping two locations in sync. Most people store their important data on their computers. Most people recognize the importance of backing up this critical information, however in my expierience, most people either don’t bother to back it up or do so infrequently. Allway Sync allows you to set up a partnership with a USB drive or external hard drive, so that the data you select will be automatically copied to the backup drive. In this way, you don’t need to worry about remembering to back things up - it is done automatically for you. The software can also keep both locations in constant syncronisation, so that if you remove a file from your computer, it will be removed from the external location as well. EverNote – www.evernote.com

I can’t take the credit for this one, a friend of mine, Tom, told me about it. Unlike the usual stuff that he comes out with (has anyone ever heard of Ray Kurzweil theories on The Singularity??!) - this is actually useful. The idea of EverNote is simple – whenever you think of something that you want to remember, you add it to EverNote; you can add notes from your computer - in fact from any computer connected to the Internet, from your mobile phone, your iPhone or your PDA – pretty much any device that connects to the Internet. Notes can take the form of either text (typed), Ink (written with a stylus), Snapshot (photograph) or Audio (spoken). Once uploaded, your notes are organized by the website and can be categorized as you like. I’ve not yet found a service that quite hits the spot like EverNote in giving people like me with the memory of a goldfish the ability to organize their

Office Tools

mobile: 655 044 970

This is simply the best downloadable office program available today. This new version replaces OpenOffice 2 (surprisingly enough!) and is effectively a replacement for Microsoft´s Office defacto standard.

office: 700 756 913

OpenOffice 3 – www.openoffice.org

OpenOffice has a suite of programs including a word processor, a spreadsheet, a database and a presentation tool. Files can be saved as OpenOffice files, which could make them difficult to open by people that don’t have the same program or alternatively you can choose to save files in the much more internationally recognised Microsoft Office standard. This allows anyone who has either OpenOffice or Microsoft Office to open your files. OpenOffice will also automatically open and allow you to view any file created in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc). CutePDF – www.cutepdf.com

Adobe Acrobat files (.PDF files) are among the most commonly used files in the world. Any file created in .PDF format can be read by anyone else in the world. If you receive a .PDF file and cannot open it then all you have to do is download Adobe Reader from www.adobe. com (its free) and you will be able to open the file. So, what is CutePDF then? Well it’s a free program that allows you to convert any document, spreadsheet or presentation into .PDF format. One of the major advantages in converting a document you are intending to send to people into .PDF format is that the process of converting it reduces it (usually dramatically) in size. Imagine creating a newsletter for your club in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice and then converting that document to a .PDF so that you can send it to all the members of your club. I recently converted a file for a fellow contributor for his bird club. It changed the file size from 7Mb down to well under 1Mb - the original file would have simply been too big for most people to receive, but the converted file was emailed without problem. Games Second Life – http://secondlife.com

If you like to play virtual reality games then this one is for you. Second Life is an online gaming world. You enter it by creating your ‘avatar’ (your character) and once in, you learn how to move around and interact with the other people in the game – remember that these are real people all over the world. Once you get the hang of it, there are thousands of lands, cities and experiences to explore. Second Life allows you to buy land, create homes, businesses and make ´money´ by selling goods to other Second Life participants. Thats all for now, keep the feedback coming, speak to you next month.

MIG ANY 2009

“Mig Any” 2008 activities (Moors and Christians Half Year Celebration). The “MIG ANY” (Half Year) celebration of the Moors and Christians takes place the first or second weekend in March, as a preamble to the Moors and Christians Festival in September. • In June, as a prelude to summer, we celebrate the “Romería del Cap”, a procession to honour the “Virgen del Rosario”. • The 16th July, Santa Pola, and especially sailors, venerate the “Virgen del Carmen” –fishermen’s patron saint– with Masses, offerings of flowers for fishermen lost at sea, processions and fireworks. • From 31st August to 8th September we celebrate Moors and Christians festival and Patron Saint’s days to honour the “Virgen de Loreto”. People re-enact the landing, envoys, conquest and reconquest by Moors and Christians, and enjoy parades, fireworks, offerings of flowers to the Madonna, processions, games for children and sports competitions. • The 10th December, according to a legend which goes back to 1643, Santa Pola commemorates the emotive “Vinguda de la Mare de Deu de Loreto” (the arrival of the Virgin).

SANTA POLA

Hiking through the Sierra of Santa Pola:striding through the mountain of Santa Pola over a 13 km route (low difficulty) is an enjoyable way to practise sport and maybe discover local fauna specimens like rabbits, foxes…From the Lighthouse, which was a former Watch Tower named Atalayola, you can enjoy astonishing views of the only inhabited island of the Region of Valencia, which is also a beautiful nature reserve: Tabarca. Biking route through the Sierra of Santa Pola:this route of 20 km is of impressive beauty. Although you don’t need a very good healthy condition, you have to be fit to stride across the mountain of the Sierra and its ravines.

CINEMA, THEATRE, CULTURE… The Culture House and the Library organise all through the year cultural activities for all the family: film seasons, theatre, concerts, dance, workshops, storytelling… The Youth’s Club of Santa Pola, « Racó Jove », entertains young people by means of contests, workshops, excursions and musical concerts. You can also enjoy a pleasant afternoon going to the movies while savouring popcorn and drinks in the Orion cinemas of the Polamax Shopping Centre, at 39 Portugal Avenue. Culture House: 24 Elche Street. Tlf. 966 692 772 Youth’s Club: Civic Centre. 10 Castaños Street. Tlf. 966 692 781

TABARCA ISLAND:

The crystal clear waters of Tabarca and its food are pleasures you cannot renounce to swimming, diving, sunbathing or just walking around the countryside are some of the activities you can do there. Boats to the island: Tlf. 608 330 422.

CELEBRATIONS IN SANTA POLA Local celebrations in any town show the attitude and traditions of the people who live there. Because of its background, the celebrations of Santa Pola, a seaboard town, are closely linked to the sea. At Easter (Semana Santa), streets witness processions performed by different brotherhoods. On these days a Medieval Market is opened inside the parade ground of the Fortress-Castle. •

OPEN AIR ACTIVITIES

Strolling out at the seaside, a biking route through the mountain, observing Flamingos… any of these activities can be enjoyed throughout the year, thanks to our pleasant weather. Routes through the salt flats nature reserve: this reserve has many signposted routes that make possible the observation of the fauna and flora of this splendid nature reserve: Flamingos, Cinnamon Teals, Black-winged Stilts, and many other birds that stay for long periods of time around the salt flats. PROFESSIONAL FOULS – and FOUL PROFESSIONALS By Malcolm Palmer It won’t have escaped your notice, that, as footballers earn (at least receive) loads of money these days, they get themselves into the gossip columns more readily. The superstars tend to get hitched up with models – some are doubtless nice girls, but listen, guys, they don’t call their workplace a ‘catwalk’ for nothing! Some legendary players have been perfect gentlemen: Pele, Alfredo di Stefano, Bobby Charlton, right up to date with Raúl – you could pick a team of nice guys, who’d never see a red card, nor would they have punch-ups in sordid night-spots. Then there are the (not economically) poor guys who have fallen foul of the demon drink, or worse – the supremely talented, and lamented Georgie Best, flawed genius Gazza, and a near-miss at topping himself by Diego Maradona, who wasn’t above pulling the odd stroke on the field, either – as England know to their cost. The next category are those upon whom the ‘red mist’ descends from time to time – kungfu expert Eric Cantona is a famous example, and David Beckham has been so visited on occasion, though the gossip columns opted for his dalliance with the toothsome Rebecca Loos as a talking point. Then are the goal celebration specialists.

Brazilians seem to be the best at devising stupid dances, and unusual methods of obtaining yellow cards, but Robbie Fowler’s simulated coke-snorting effort was right out of the Scouse Bumper Fun Book. But it’s off the field where the most entertaining action takes place. Ronaldo, not notably short in the libido department, found himself two nice fillies, only to discover that their ‘wedding tackle’ closely resembled his own. Nasty shock! This was after he had arranged a lavish wedding at an enormous chateau, but neglected to obtain a bride to participate. Pugilists abound, culminating in the latest Stevie Gerrard business, last in a long line running through Woodgate, Bowyer, Barton…………..And as for the ones who have let their hormones run away with them, well, there are too many to mention. A few players, and lots of managers, are apt to put their mouths in action without first putting their brains in gear, providing the media with untold amusement, but, for the last word, I prefer the droll pronouncements of Bill Shankly, as when Liverpool were hammered 5-0 by Ajax: ‘Och, ye cannae play footba’ against a defensive team!’

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB The club championship are drawing to their conclusion with only the semis and the finals to be contested, in the singles competion most of the favorites are still there but in quite a few of the other disciplines, the mighty have fallen and there should be some new names on the honours board this year, which I think is always good for the club. YOUR STARS Aries

The round the world yacht race you are currently competing in will go badly unless the ‘waxing of the timber’ has been carried out frequently enough - we have absolutely no idea what this means, but if you are a yachtsman your life may well depend on it, according to what Planet Mercury told us. David Bowie could come into your life this month in a way that you will find surprising. Stock up on red blusher and anything proven to make your hair stand up on end which doesn’t also make a burning smell.

On a chance visit to a Subway’s on the 7th you will discover that they have completely run out of tomatoes in a Twilight Zone kind of way. Make the most of this and you are likely to get a free sandwich, coupled with a regular contributor status on a local vegetarian radio phone-in show. A company you invested in during the dot com boom, which you had written off, is set to haunt you this month with the possibility that you are called as a witness in a fraud trial. Practice saying ‘I know nothing’ in front of a mirror for three hours before testifying.

July 23rd - August 23rd

Mar 20 - Apr 19

A salesman’s cold call to your work number will introduce you to a whole new world of discount shopping on the 4th. You will be drawn to a snazzy sofa and chair set which will go well in your lounge, however the coverings will wear out suddenly after the 1 year guarantee expires. Puddings with currents in are well starred after the 16th but only if eaten with a counterclockwise spoon movement. Jupiter is about to enter a period of hostility with your type. It may be useful to learn an ancient Jupiter prayer in a pathetic attempt to placate this awesomely powerful planetary warrior.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 19

Your stale olive flipping party trick is in need of a reinvention, although since you taught your dog to join in your audience has increased dramatically; even so, avoid performances in a car park around the 7th unless a bottle of antiseptic cream is available if it all goes horribly bloody. You will be encouraged by a European friend to accompany them to the Eurovision Song Contest later in the year: decline politely if you do not know anything about this competition.

Gemini

May 22nd - June 21st A picture of you will appear on the internet around 10th which links you to the latest Walt Disney movie release. You will receive numerous requests for media appointments, all of which should be taken advantage of for the very generous expenses payments on offer. (This may be the only time in your life that you will be able to drink from a mini-bar in your hotel room without feeling panicked by the expense. Enjoy. Neptune loves ya baby.) A break-dancer who ten years ago bought clothing you gave to a charity shop will appear on national television.

Cancer

June 22nd - July 22nd A Scottish ancestor, that you do not speak about in your family any more, could make an appearance which will have devastating consequences for the well being of a dwarf tree in your garden. Ensure the tree is watered throughout the month and top up with phosphates as required. A milky drink will give you one of the soundest nights of sleep you have ever known on the 24th, which will fill you with goodwill to man and a generous tip to a street bum the day afterwards. Unfortunately the street bum will use this money to buy liquor and his damaged liver’s only hope will be that the street tramp is prevented from finishing the bottle by a vicious beating by another street bum.

AIt is written in the stars that your pet will choke violently on fish - ensure you are competent in the doggie equivalent of the Heimlich Maneuver; delay the laying of any new carpeting and ensure the lid on your tropical fish tank is locked shut at all times. Your car will present some sort of dramatic orange-ball-of-flame-like problem this month, after the 12th, during refueling. Do not wash the car on the first two weekends of the month as you run the risk of becoming a victim of the latest skirmish in Sponge Wars 2007 between Uranus and Mars. Try at least one new international food this month, but not Greek as this will indirectly lead to violence in a deli in Europe over the next six months, even if you do not live on that continent.

Libra

September 23rd - October 23rd You will be airlifted to safety in the middle of the month following a misunderstanding involving a refrigerator with too many tomatoes in it. Try not to let this trigger off your volcanic anger, especially in the helicopter which could ditch disastrously. Save up your residual anger for a chance encounter with a man who once sold your mother a worthless cup and saucer for $30. Yes you do still have it - middle cupboard in the spare room, third from the left.

Scorpio

October 24th - November 22nd A Scorpio’s claws are never blunted so cling on this month refusing to let go only until you get what you are clinging on for or the authorities have been called AND they are on their way. Beware of a red car and a Mexican’s Dorito on the 17th as this chance encounter is set to become a well known joke at your expense in Mexican stand up comedy clubs throughout the entire New Mexico area. You will make up one of the world’s finest nick names this month for an annoying guy who lives near you. It is only a matter of time until your entire neighborhood use it admiringly.

November 23rd - December 21st

Capricorn

December 22nd - January 20th You will be discovered by a talent agent whilst walking down the street this month and offered a highly profitable deal to sculpt a Halloween mask based on your face. Recover from your immediate feelings of upset and arrange an agent for your subsequent public appearances which could prove highly lucrative later in the year. Throw out all unused tins of pineapple after the 17th

Aquarius

January 21st - February 18th Beware small dogs and cats with large hats after the 10th. It is often said that Aquarius is a water sign. Even so, an umbrella is advised on the 16th unless it is convenient to strip down to your bathing costume on your arrival at your destination. People dressed up as large rabbits and brightly colored eggs are set to make this month furry and colorful in a pleasingly sugary way.

Pisces

February 19th - March 20th Party food is well starred this month, especially jam tarts with a raspberry filling. However, avoid lemonade in large bottles between 6th-14th especially at the critical open-for-the-first-time period. An impulse purchase of chocolate on 8th will leave a lasting impression on the person who takes your money. Saturn could prevent your optimum bowel movements after the 9th.

Can you unscramble the words to make an English proverb?
