Love is in the air

The Jungle Drums

As it is Valentine’s Day this month and also a leap year (when women are allowed to propose to men!) we find out the history of the days plus few fun facts!

History of Valentines Day

The history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a

sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called

spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goat hide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in

a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman "lottery" system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colourful pictures known as "scrap."

History of Leap Year What is a leap year? A leap year is a year in which one extra day has been inserted at the end of February. A leap year consists of 366 days, whereas other years, called common years, have 365 days. The extra day, the 29 February, is the 60th day of a leap year in the Gregorian Calendar, with 306 days remaining. When is the next Leap Year? This year! Why is it called a Leap Year? Hundreds of years ago the leap year day had no recognition in English law. The day was 'leapt over' and ignored, hence the term 'leap year'. Why do we have a Leap Day? The 29 February is known as a leap day and it is added to the calendar during a leap year. This extra day is added every four years to bring the solar year of 365¼ days into line with the calendar year of 365 days. A Leap Day Tradition The one day of the year on which, traditionally, women can propose to men. It was considered that as the day also had no legal status, it was reasonable to assume that tradition had no status, so women took advantage of this and proposed to the man they wanted to marry. A law once existed in Scotland forbidding a man to refuse a proposal

made to him. Punishment for such an offence was a large fine. This tradition goes back to an old Irish legend concerning St. Patrick and St. Bridget in the 5th Century. In the 5th century, a nun by the name of St. Bridget, petitioned St. Patrick on behalf of all women in that they have a more active role in choosing their husbands. As a result of this request, women were allowed to propose to men once every four years. Leap Day Superstition In Scotland it is thought unlucky to be born on a Leap Year’s Day. Interesting Fact about Leap Years You can work out which year will be a year by dividing the year by 4. Years which are evenly divisible by 4, such as 2004 and 2008 are leap years. However, there are some exceptions in century years. A century year, that is, a year which ends in two zeroes 1800, 1900, 2000, etc., is not a leap year unless it is also evenly divisible by 400. This means that the year 2000 was a leap year and 2400 will also be one, but 1800 and 1900 were not leap years. A person born on February 29 may be called a "leapling" or a "leaper".

Facts about Valentine’s Day and Leap Year ●Many believe the 'X' symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an 'X.' The 'X' was then kissed to show their sincerity. ●Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse. ●In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your

sleeve." ●Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800's. ● Red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. ●It was the ancient Egyptians who first figured out that the solar year and the man-made calendar year didn't always match up. ●According to astrologers, those born under the sign of Pisces on February 29 have unusual talents and personalities reflecting their special status.

Marriage in Spain

Marriage Formalities in Spain If you wish to get married in Spain, the first step is to contact the relevant authority in the place you are planning to get married, whether it be the town hall, registry office, district court or religious authority. They will be able to inform you of the documents they will require from you. This information is not given out by your local consulate, although you will need to visit them for some of the documentation.

Civil Marriages Applications for civil marriages must be made to the Civil Registry, District Court, or Town Hall in the place where the marriage is to be celebrated. As it may take some time to get an appointment, and the paperwork to be processed, it is important that you make contact with them at the earliest date possible. They will tell you what documentation they require.

Religious Marriages Requirements for religious marriages vary according to the denomination and area in which an applicant lives; they will then be asked for a variety of documents. Please consult with the relevant authority for information on these. Religious marriages are recognized as legal under Spanish law, but to obtain an official marriage certificate, the marriage must subsequently be registered with the local civil authorities. Therefore, it is very important to confirm that the officiator of the marriage is licensed to marry and to establish arrangements for the subsequent registration. Make sure you ask if the officiator will register the marriage on your behalf or whether they will provide you with the paperwork to do so yourselves.

Legalisation/Apostille of Documents and Translations Legalisation is the official confirmation that a signature, seal or stamp on a UK public document is genuine, however, it does not authenticate the content. This is usually required by the authorities before they will allow UK documents to be used for official purposes. All the documents required by the authorities will need to be translated, word for word. We advise you to contact an official registered translator (traductor jurado), who is registered with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs – a full list can be seen on the webpage of the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y Cooperación. Consulates can also recommend this type of translators who are local to your area. This translation and legalization of documents will cost – so make sure that when making enquiries, one of them is the price.

February 2012

Top five ways to look and feel better this year With February well under way and your New Year resolutions probably already slipping, now’s the time to think again about how you can make yourself look and feel better in 2012

Here are our top five suggestions –

Watchers so you can go along to a few of their sessions, too.

Give up smoking

Get a health check Most of us wait until something is wrong before going to the doctor, but this could mean you miss out on an important early diagnosis. There are lots of diseases that show no signs in the early stages that, if caught early, are far easier to treat. Medcare Well Person Health Checks give you a body MOT. You will get a general health check, blood tests to screen for many diseases and vital screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancer. If any hidden illness is discovered you will be glad to receive early treatment, and if the check proves you are fit and well you will feel even better knowing this.

Sort out a healthy eating plan Carbs are good, fat is bad – or is it the other way round? Low-fat is in, but good fats are, well – good. With so much conflicting advice it is all but impossible to know just what you should be eating to stay fit and well. So take the hard work out of planning a healthy diet this year by getting expert nutrition advice from the Medcare GP. And, if you need to lose weight, Medcare works closely with Weight

There’s no confusion over the health risks of smoking, so if you are still puffing away we only have one question for you – Why? You’ve probably tried to give up but found it too hard to kick the habit on your own. Research shows that people who quit smoking with the help of a medical professional are more likely to stay off the nicotine. So, why not talk to the Medcare GP and make this the year you give up for the very last time.

Polish up your smile A bright, shiny smile not only makes you look and feel happier, it makes you look younger, too. As we age our teeth darken and yellow, losing their youthful whiteness. But there is no need to put up with a dingy smile as a professional teeth whitening treatment from your dentist can restore your former gleam. Book a free smile consultation with the Medcare dentist and make 2012 the year you shine.

Get a new look If a new hairstyle just doesn’t cut it this year, cosmetic treatments or surgery could be for you. Iron out wrinkles and smooth away frown lines with facial filler or Botox treatments. Or, what about a facelift to restore lost youth, or a tummy tuck or liposuction to rid yourself of that unwanted fat that dieting just won’t shift. Then there’s breast surgery – enhancement, reduction or lifting, rhinoplasty to change the shape of the nose you’ve always hated, plus loads of other treatments. As long as you seek proper medical advice and get a referral to a good surgeon, cosmetic surgery today is safe and effective. Do make sure only a qualified and registered doctor administers cosmetic treatments and always see your GP for a referral to a surgeon. Why not book a free appointment with Medcare for treatments, referrals and advice. Call Medcare today to make sure 2012 is the year you look and feel your best. Medcare is the only British GP service on the Costa Blanca. In addition to full GP surgery, Medcare offers a wide range of healthcare services in English including dental, cosmetic treatments, osteopathy, podiatry and specialist diabetes care. Home Remedies Chapped Lips

There are different methods one could use when considering ways on how to cure dry lips. One of the most effective chapped and dry lips remedies involves a routine of exfoliating and moisturizing the lips. Exfoliation must be done by gently rubbing the lips. You can also make use of a soft toothbrush or cloth. It is important not to pick the dry and dead skin from the surface of the lips as this can cause bleeding. After exfoliation, the lips must be moisturized using a moisturizer or balm. For a treatment using natural ingredients try massaging the lips with a mixture of milk cream, lime juice and rose water helps to keep the lips nourished and moisturized. Honey is also a nourishing natural substance that prevents drying of the lips.

Why you should’t cut out carbs Ditching potatoes, pasta and bread is one of the most common weightloss strategies, which has become popular due to diet plans such as Atkins and South Beach. But carbohydrates actually provide fewer calories per gram than fat, protein or alcohol and according to recommendations from the Food Standards Agency on good health, should make up approximately 50 percent of our daily calorie intake. Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy, and are quickly and easily converted to blood glucose, the body cells’ preferred source of fuel. In particular, the brain must have glucose as a source of energy. The brain will not use other sources of energy except in the extreme case of starvation, in which ketone bodies (from the breakdown of body fat) are used by the brain. The body cannot store a large amount of carbohydrate; there is only a short supply available as glycogen in the liver and muscle. Therefore, carbohydrates must be supplied on a regular basis. “The problem is not that carbohydrates are bad”, says weight-management expert Sarah Russell, “it’s just that we tend to eat too much of them!” Foods such as pasta, bread, pizza, cakes and cereal bars are quick, easy and readily available as convenience foods, leading us to consume far more than we need. Cutting them out sometimes brings about rapid weight loss, but is not the long-term answer for a healthy, balanced diet.

It's also what you add to the carbohydrates that bump up the calories. For example, the margarine or butter we put on the bread and the cream or cheese sauces we add to pasta. The Solution Instead of cutting out potatoes, rice, pasta and bread altogether, simply go for smaller portions — no bigger than your fist — and spread them out through the day. This will help keep your blood-sugar levels steady and hunger at bay. Aim for more variety as well; for example oats for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and a rice salad for dinner, and balance it out with plenty of protein, fruit, salad and vegetables. Also, if you need to lose weight, cut down on the added fats (margarine, cream or cheese sauce), not the carbs. To beat hunger pangs, lose weight and stay healthy, try these healthy carb tips: • Substitute bran flakes for frosted flakes • Substitute whole wheat bread for regular white bread • Substitute rice cakes for cereal/granola bar • Substitute wholegrain/whole wheat baguette for French bread • Substitute wholewheat pasta for regular pasta • Substitute brown rice for regular white rice • Add wheatgerm and oats to your cereal • Add chopped fruit to your cereal, salads and stews

Have a little bit of Faith

Hi, I´ve been in the Hair and Beauty industry for 27 years and gained a lot of experience from teaching in colleges in the U.K, working for a large Hair colour company and working in different countries around the world with different hair and skin types. My job, as well as giving technical advise to professionals is to source and learn about the latest products for the hair and beauty industry in Spain. The Spanish climate has a different effect on hair and skin than the English one. Most people need to be using more hydrating products on their hair and skin, to add moisture where it has dried out from the sun and help smooth fine lines. There are many creams available that do this but the effect is not enough for most people and many people here talk about having a face lift, which is a very big decision. There is a more gentle alternative. One of the latest products in the beauty industry to take the U.K by storm is called Faith Lift and is a totally organic non surgical facelifting system. It consists of a skin tightening mask that will help to physically lift sagging skin, can be applied by a beautician in the salon and can be bought from salons to use at home. The effect is instant and amazing; it plumps out fine lines and has a lifting effect on the skin, which will last a couple of days. If you use it once a week, and the aftercare everyday, then the effect can be maintained and it can carry on lifting after the treatment. Best of all it´s totally safe and non invasive. If you would like any advice or information on which salons offer this service and sell the products or advice on hair or skin problems then please call Caroline Biggs on 966725710 or email kcihairproducts@hotmail.com K.C.I Hair and Beauty Warehouse - Guardamar del Segura

Fashion Trends

Part Two

Spring / Summer 2012 Trend #1: Floral print. As you might have noticed there were loads of floralprinted items on the runway. Some designers like Blumarine took this trend to the extreme level while others just added it to their collections to make them more feminine and attractive.

Trend #2: Asymmetrical hemlines. We all like classic but sometimes it seems too boring and we want something different. Designers have offered a lot of new interesting ideas for us to try during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. And one of this is the asymmetrical hemline. Not only dresses come with an asymmetrical hemline. We see plenty of skirts and even jackets cut in the most amazing way possible.

Trend #3: Animal prints. When someone says ‘animal print’ the first thing that comes to our mind is the leopard – the print we love and hate, it’s appealing but it’s been too long with us already. However, some designers still choose it for their collections. Now leopard print is not that one we’re used to. It comes in a variety of colors and the print itself has become smaller and more delicate. Along with leopard we see snakeskin and crocodile skin but other patterns are even trendier – those featuring lizards, cats and birds.

Trend #4: Black-and-white. While black and white tones are the most traditional combination of colors for formal clothing, which isn’t normally very original in design, in the new season everything is going to be different. Black-and-white pieces on the runway were playful, stylish and chic. Girls paraded in feminine cocktail dresses, translucent gowns, leather suits teamed with sexy blouses, etc.

The Primrose - A feeling of Spring The botanical name for primrose is primula, from the primulaceas family of plants, and is derived from the latin word prima meaning first.

Primroses are, indeed, the first of the spring flowers. The plant originally came from China but nowadays is popular around the world due to its great variety of colours and delicate perfume. It is easy to find in garden centres as it flowers nearly all year round however, it is in winter and spring that it really looks its best. There are thirty varieties of primrose, some of which are cultivated as indoor plants but the majority thrive in the garden.

These are the most common varieties: Primula obconica is a sturdy plant. It has large flowers and they grow in groups on small branches. It is able to withstand the heat of summer and sometimes even flowers during this time. Primula malacoides has the strongest scent. Its flowers are star shaped and appear in winter and continue until April. Its stems are tall and thin and its leaves are very indented. This variety grows well outside until the end of spring. Primula vulgaris is the hardiest of all the varieties and copes especially well with low temperatures. It is a small plant, maximum size 15 cm, and its flowers are very distinctive with short stems. It is ideally suited to sunny terraces.

Information and Facts All primroses have abundant foliage with heart shaped leaves which have a wrinkled texture. The leaves grow in a star shape with the flowers growing in the centre. Depending on the variety of plant they can grow up to 40cm high and can be many colours, including yellow, purple, orange, red, pink and white. All varieties possess a pleasant, sweet aroma. Primroses need well drained soil where no puddles form. Watering should be continuous to ensure that the compost is always damp. It is essential that the plants are in the sunlight so that they retain their flowers for the longest time possible. They can withstand the cold winter weather and by constant dead heading, new flowers will continually bloom. It is important to use a fertilizer rich in potassium when the plant is flowering as well as a slow release feed when planting. The primrose is susceptible to various infestations, black fly, caterpillars, red spider and fungi but with adequate treatment they soon recover. Puddles of water around the plants can make them die, as can too dry a soil. Sowing time is between May and September, their germination is 20 days at 12 to 15 degrees and cool temperatures are favorable when the plant is young. The primrose is a plant which will provide colour and perfume to your garden, demanding little attention in return.

The Legend of the Primrose There is an amusing legend concerning the primrose plant. One day the apostle Paul, the heavenly doorkeeper who mans the gates of Heaven, was very tired and dozed off. He didn’t notice when his keys slipped from his hands and flew down to Earth. Upon waking a little later, he saw that his gold keys were lying on the ground, and immediately sent an angel after them. The angel brought them back, but in the place where the heavenly keys had rested, there were now primroses growing. Here is another legend that was told in Greece. There once lived a young man who wished to learn everything there was to know. Painstakingly, step by step, he studied the mysteries of nature, laboring to comprehend the structures of the land, water, and living things that make up our world. A time came when Earth held no more secrets for him. He knew more than all the wise men of the world together. So he looked into the sky and saw the stars, of which he knew nothing. He resolved to travel directly to them. But in order to do this, he must forge golden keys to open the gates of heaven. When the youth had finished making them, he climbed to the highest mountain and began his ascent to the center of the Universe. He rose higher and higher, and the stars whispered to him: “You must forget everything! You will never see the Earth again! You must forget your mother!” The young man could endure this no longer, and fell from the heavenly road. When he regained consciousness, he saw that he was lying in a forest glade, and in his hand he held, instead of a golden key, a crushed flower that he did not recognize. This was the primrose plant.

Primrose plant is used in food. All kinds of beverages and teas are made from dried plants, its young leaves work beautifully in spring salads, and relishes can be made from its roots. Vulcanologists have discovered the most interesting and vitally important use for the primrose. Specialists have observed that certain primroses open up their petals as if by command before a volcanic eruption. It is as if they were signaling: “Danger! The volcano has awakened”

Murcia

es is r p r u s of ll fu y it c A

Murcia, Spain has roughly 300,000 inhabitants and lies 75km south of Alicante which is about 30km west of Torrevieja.

The city of Murcia can be reached via the national road E15 from Alicante. You can also arrive in this interesting city by bus or train. Embedded in between the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo lies the city which, due to its large and sophisticated watering system, is famous for the mouth watering fruit and vegetables it produces. From a tourist point of view, Murcia offers a huge amount of interesting places to visit as the history of the city goes back to the year 800, when it was originally founded. Amongst the famous visiting points for any traveller is the Cathedral de Santa Maria. Finished in the 15th century, the cathedral is Murcias most impressive monument. The city is divided by the Segura River and is known for its beautiful Baroque Cathedral, Almudi Palace and the castle of Monteagudo (where the Arab influence can be well appreciated), a fortress from the 11th c., the Market de Veronicas, the Malecon Garden, the University of Murcia, the Casino (A Murcian institution in Calle TraperĂa its ballroom is decorated in the style of Luis 15th), and the Museum Ramon Gaya, which was inaugurated in 1990 when the artist was 82 years old, and also includes other works of art from other artists. Ramon Gaya was influenced by famous artists such as Vazquez and Rembrandt, to give you an idea of the intensity of his work. The cathedral, which is located at the plaza del Cardinal Belluga, just next to the river, has different entrance doors, all of which have their own treasure. The main entrance, called Puerta Del Perdon, the north door, Portada De Las Cadenas and the Portada De Los Apostoles, lead you into the impressive Capilla Mayor (Chappel) decorated with lots of gold. When you take a tour around the Cathedral of Murcia, make sure you visit the museum inside the cathedral, where many more details are explained. Right outside the Cathedral you will find the city hall and the Palacia Episcopal, the residency of the Bishop of Murcia. The variety of museums, from the archeological to the museum for water systems, the science museum, to the museo de bellas Artes which shows art from Ballester and Gaya amongst others, means there is something of interest for every visitor.

.Murcia is the perfect city for strolling around (and a terrible one to drive in, with very complicated one-way systems and crowded carparks). Everything worth seeing is within walking distance. The most famous commercial streets are Trapería, Platería and la Avda. Alfonso X el Sabio. The Paseo del Malecón near the River Segura is also a pleasant walk out of the city and then back again. Churches and Convents worth visiting include: Santa Ana church, San Andrés church, San Miguel church. San Nicolás church; San Juan de Dios church and museum, Las Agustinas monastery is just 5km away. Nuestra Sra. de la Fuensanta sanctuary has great views of the city. Shopping: The most typical things to buy to eat in Murcia are meat pies (including deer pie) from Bonache (in the pretty Plaza de las Flores - Flowers square). Shops in the Trapería and Platería are also worth a look. The Verónicas market is good for famous Murcian market-garden products, fish and seafood. On the outskirts of the city you will find two very large shopping centres, IKEA and the Real Murcia football stadium.

Doggy Racism This month top dog psychologist Peter Singh comes to the defence of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Racism! Itʼs an ugly word. With uglier thoughts! It brings together feelings of ʻthem and usʼ. It also carries with it little empathy. Itʼs ignorance of the highest order. We all have feelings and we all bleed the same blood, regardless of colour or nationality. Racism causes misery for millions of people around the world and unless we treat other people how we would like to be treated ourselves, it will continue. This ugly word and emotion is not just aimed at humans, it is also very much alive and kicking in the dog world. Racism towards dogs has been happening for decades and is now at boiling point in the UK. Since the seventies the German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Doberman have all been subject to this disease, but nothing as strong as the current victim, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I was recently interviewed by a newspaper in the UK on the subject of dog aggression. The paper in question had been running a campaign for weeks, entitled, ʻShop a Dogʼ! This campaign was mostly aimed at Staffordshire Bull Terriers and they wanted it to be ʻlawʼ that this breed should have to wear muzzles in public. They also asked readers to send in photos of what they thought were banned breeds in their area and in return the sender would win a free mug! They wanted to know my opinion about dog aggression as I rehabilitate aggressive dogs on a regular basis. I mentioned to them during the interview that they were tackling the problem from the wrong angle. Itʼs not about the breed of dog, itʼs about the human behind the dog. The paper also stated on their website the following, (and before you read this, make sure you are sitting down)! "Whether your dog is a banned type depends on what your dog actually looks like, rather than the breed". Until people actually wake up and realise that it is about how the human raises the dog, nothing will change. You can go and buy or rescue a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and if you do the wrong things, as in any dog, the dog will become aggressive and may attack. I have witnessed Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers attacking other dogs and people stand there and laugh. If, on the other hand, the dog in question was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a German Shepherd, there would be uproar. Thatʼs not right. In the United Kingdom at present, you need more paperwork to own a

TV than you do to own a dog! Due to this fact, there are young delinquents owning powerful breed dogs which include Staffordshire Bull Terriers, who donʼt know the first thing about raising a dog properly. They use these dogs as ʻweaponsʼ and to improve their ʻstreet credibilityʼ. Why not start tackling the root of the problem, which is dealing with the youth and making sure people who own dogʼs are committed to raising a dog correctly, and no, that doesnʼt mean love, love and more love. Somewhere in the relationship has to be discipline and rules, just as it should be with delinquents. I was walking along Londonʼs Piccadilly a few months ago and was moved to tears as to what I witnessed. There was a homeless person sleeping in a doorway. He had been drinking heavily. A few feet away from him lay his faithful dog. A Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The dog just lay there, waiting for his owner to wake. This scene I witnessed epitomises dogs. Loyalty to the highest degree, without judgement. I had my camera with me that day. I pondered whether it would be right or wrong of me to photograph this moving scene. My final conclusion was that I had to. After all, a picture can tell a thousand words. Here in Londonʼs metropolis, lay a dog. A dog that many say should be muzzled. As the many people tried their best to avoid him, he just lay there, showing loyalty, respect, trust and love. That shouldnʼt be muzzled, that should be embraced. Peter Singh provides one-to-one consultations with dog owners who experience problem behaviour with their pets. Peter, who himself owns five dogs and three cats, also runs monthly dog psychology courses for clients. His philosophy regarding behaviour is uncomplicated and easy to understand - you can check it out at www.thedogyouneed.com Peter has had a 100% success rate with clients in both Spain and the UK. He also provides a relaxing and peaceful mode of travelling with his pet transport business. Check the service out at www.europeanpettrabsport.com

Welcome to this month’s computer article

How to make a doctor’s Do you ever have to queue for ages to get an appointment with the doctor? Well, I have the answer!

stand for hours in dark, depressing, illness ridden reception halls in the local health centre!

I don’t know about you but every time Liesl (‘er indoors) or I have needed to go to the doctor, the biggest frustration is the fact that we know that we will need to traipse to the medical centre and queue for up to an hour – and that is just to get the appointment to see the doctor!

I thought that I would share my wonderful discovery with you guys. It’s a pretty big website and does so much more than allow you to book appointments, but today this is the area we are going to focus on.

Like many of the expats here, I am quick to point out to others that the Spanish health system is far superior to that of good old Blighty, but also like most of my country folk, I have just “heard” that and don’t actually know whether it’s true! So this month I decided, (being far from an expert in this topic) that I would look it up. The best data that I could find was from that great online encyclopaedia – Wikipedia Countries’ health services are ranked based on life expectancy, responsiveness (i.e. speed of service) and financial contribution. I’m guessing that my little area of the Costa Blanca didn’t help in the responsiveness factor! Anyway, overall Spain was ranked number 7 in the world, with the UK coming 18th so it seems, in this case at least, the “jungle drums” were right; it still doesn’t change the fact, that, at least for my family, it’s a right royal pain the rear to get a simple appointment! You can imagine my joy when I visited a customer, Graham in Gran Alacant, last week and he told me about a website he had found – www.san.gva.es If you have a SIP then you can use this website to book appointments with your local GP. This is all done over the Internet from the comfort of your own home so there is no need to

PAGE

28

So first, you will need your computer, an Internet connection and your SIP card. Fire up your computer and get onto the Internet, once there navigate to www.san.gva.es, you will be shown a page with 3 options (Ciutadania, Professionals, Institucional), you need to click on the Ciutadania after which you will be shown a very busy website the same as (image 1) As you will see there are only two languages for this site (Valencian or Castilliano), so no English I’m afraid. Next you need to click on the second menu item down on the left hand side, titled “Sanitat24: Solicitud de Cita Previa en atención primaria” this will display some hidden options, one of which is “Cita por Internet”, this is the option you need, once you click it you may get a message from your web browser saying that the “content is blocked”, just click to accept that you want to view the blocked content and you will see the same as (image 2). You are almost there now, just enter your SIP card number in the box under “Número SIP / Número SIP” and your date of birth under the box “Data de naixement / Fecha de nacimiento”. Once done click on

WARNING: Consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not.

A man goes into his son's room to wish him goodnight. His son is having a nightmare - the man wakes him and asks his son if he is OK? The son replies he is scared because he dreamt that Auntie Susie had died. The father assures the son that Auntie Susie is fine and sends him to bed. The next day, Auntie Susie dies. One week later, the man again goes into his son's room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare - the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that granddaddy had died. The father assures the son that granddaddy is fine and sends him to bed. The next day, granddaddy dies. One week later, the man again goes into his son's room to wish him goodnight. His son is having another nightmare - the man again wakes his son. The son this time says that he had dreamt that daddy had died. The father assures the son that he is OK and sends the boy to bed. The man goes to bed but cannot sleep because he is so terrified. The next day, the man is scared for his life- he is sure he is going to die. After dressing he drives very cautiously to work fearful of a collision. He doesn't eat lunch because he is scared of food poisoning. He avoids everyone for he is sure he will somehow be killed. He jumps at every noise, starts at every movement and hides under his desk. Upon walking in his front door, he finds his wife. "Good God Dear" he proclaims, "I've just had the worst day of my entire life! She responds, "You think your day was bad, the milkman dropped dead on the doorstep this morning."

Farting All The Time

0 to 200 in 6 seconds

Doctor, "What seems to be the problem?" Patient, "Doc, I've got the farts. I mean I fart all the time," The Doctor nods, "Hmm." Patient, "My farts do not stink and you can't hear them. It's just that I fart all the time. Look, we've been talking here for about 10 minutes and I've farted five times. You didn't hear them and you don't smell them, do you?" "Hmm," says the Doctor, He picks up his pad and writes out a prescription. The patient is thrilled "Great doc. This prescription, will it really clear up my farts?" "No," sighs the Doctor, "The prescription is to clear your sinuses. Next week I want you back here for a hearing test."

Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE !!" The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday.

Generous lawyer A local United Way office realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute. "Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?" The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?" Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, "Um ... no." The lawyer interrupts, "or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?" The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again. "or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, "leaving her penniless with three children?!" The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..." On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again, "So if I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?"

to be joking Dumbest Kid?

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

It's Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, and a man makes his way to his seat right at center ice. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbor if someone will be sitting there. "No" says the neighbor. "The seat is empty." "This is incredible," said the man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Stanley Cup and not use it?" The neighbor says, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Stanley Cup we haven't been to together since we got married." "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. That's terrible... But couldn't you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?" The man shakes his head. "No,” he says. “They're all at the funeral."

A guy dies and is sent to Hell. Satan meets him, shows him doors to three rooms, and says he must choose one to spend eternity in. In the first room, people are standing in shit up to their necks. The guy says "no, let me see the next room." In the second room, people are standing with shit up to their noses. Guy says no again. Finally, Satan opens the door to the third room. People are standing with shit up to their knees, drinking coffee and eating danish pastries. The guy says, "I pick this room." Satan says okay and starts to leave, and the guy wades in and starts pouring some coffee. On the way out Satan yells, "O.K., coffee break's over. Everyone back on your heads!"

A guy joins a monastery and takes a vow of silence: he’s allowed to say two words every seven years. After the first seven years, the elders bring him in and ask for his two words. "Cold floors," he says. They nod and send him away. Seven more years pass. They bring him back in and ask for his two words. He clears his throats and says, "Bad food." They nod and send him away. Seven more years pass. They bring him in for his two words. "I quit," he says. "That’s not surprising," the elders say. "You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here."

Stuffed deer heads on walls are bad enough, but it’s worse when you see them wearing dark glasses, having streamers around their necks and a hat on their antlers. Because then you know they were enjoying themselves at a party when they were shot.

A guy meets a hooker in a bar. She says, "This is your lucky night. I’ve got a special game for you. I’ll do absolutely anything you want for $300, as long as you can say it in three words." The guy replies, "Hey, why not?" He pull his wallet out of his pocket, and one at a time lays three hundred-dollar bills on the bar, and says, slowly: "Paint… my…house."

I failed my driver’s test. The guy asked me "what do you do at a red light?" I said, I don’t know… look around, listen to the radio…

Two Irish guys are fishing. The first guy reels in his line and sees that he's snagged an old bottle. As he's taking it off the hook, a genie pops out and promises to grant him one wish. "Turn the lake into beer," he says. The genie goes "Poof!" and the lake turns into beer. He says to the other guy, "So what do you think?" The other guy says, "You jerk. Now we've got to piss in the boat."

A Jewish man is walking on the beach when he discovers a bottle containing genie. He rubs it and a genie comes out, promises to grant him one wish. He says, "Peace in the Middle east, that's my wish." The genie looks concerned, then says "No, I'm sorry, that's just not possible. Some things just can't be changed. Do you have another wish?" The guys says 'Well...for my whole life I've never receievd oral sex from my wife. That would be my wish." The genie pauses for another moment and then says "How would you define peace?"

I was just reading in the newspaper about a dwarf who was pickpocketed. How can anyone stoop so low? B******s! Just been thrown out & barred from the local swimming baths because I had my Speedo trunks on! What I didn't know was the 'S' had come off the logo!! 31

Two campers are walking through the woods when a huge brown bear suddenly appears in the clearing about 50 feet in front of them. The bear sees the campers and begins to head toward them. The first guy drops his backpack, digs out a pair of sneakers, and frantically begins to put them on. The second guy says, "What are you doing? Sneakers won’t help you outrun that bear." "I don't need to outrun the bear," the first guy says. "I just need to outrun you."
