It’s that time again. Right as we wind down for fall break, we have a new issue of The Journal for everyone to read. What has felt like a crazy last four weeks has turned into a collection of stories, photos and art that I’m beyond excited to share with you all.

Seeing how class has operated these past few weeks, it was plain to see how much hard work people were putting in. Photographers taking pictures last Friday and Saturday, Culture reporter Lillie Youmans with her phone to her ear trying to decipher and take notes over an interview, head artist Sal Lynch working hard on the Journal Address comic or Print Managing Editor Ayslin Bowman moving around the room nonstop to aid various editors, we were driven to provide the best work possible.

In terms of our website, there have been a number of changes. Digital Managing Editor Grace Wilson completely revamped the layout, so make sure to go check that out for some exclusive content that’s not in the print issue. There, you’ll be able to read the recap of SHS’s first football win since the beginning of the pandemic, written by Sports reporter Lucy Hiller. Likewise, we have our new “Meet the Staff” video up, thanks to our Videographer Natalie Walker.

Looking more at the print issue, there are so many interesting stories to keep an eye out for.

Our centerfold, “Calm or crisis?”, tackles teen mental health and highlights the addition of a new crisis hotline 988. News Editor Sophie Barker and News reporter Sophie Barnes traveled during school hours to attend a press conference at the Indiana Government Center South.

We also have a story this issue about English teacher and dance coach Jessi Walpole and her “why” with what she does. Features reporter Harjas Kaur spent hours going through interviews muffled by air conditioners and re-interviewed several times in order to write such an impactful story.

We made many memories as a staff this issue though. Whether it be from singing along to different renditions of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” or telling ghost stories during our long production night, we shared so many laughs.

Through everyone’s hard work and time spent in Room 400 has manifested into the issue you’re holding right now. We hope you fall in love with our autumn issue of The Journal, and enjoy your fall break!

Teacher prepares for trip to Native American Academy

n Sun Valley, Arizona, there is a small school. From having to live on a 5-acre plot of land to now having 32 buildings across 72 acres of land, the Native American Christian Academy serves to educate and disciple the local Navajo Indian students for Christ.

But the school remains far from perfect.

Math teacher Jack Williams and other volunteers hope to go over to Arizona this fall break to help things move more smoothly.

“One of my passions is to serve in a physical way,” Williams said. “I love to help people fix things (and) repair things, especially those who are trying to serve the kingdom as well.”

The Grace Pointe Church of the Nazarene is a church that belongs to a district made up of 71 individual churches.

The district participates in mission trips around the country, and sometimes even around the world, to help people in need with different

aspects of life such as education and healthcare.

When the district plans a mission trip, information is given out to the local workand-witness liaisons at all of the individual churches. Then volunteers gather up and plan accordingly.

“We’ll say ‘Hey, Jack and Hollie are planning a trip to Arizona, and they’re interested in anybody that would like to go,” Williams said.

Although the school serves just 35 students and has a a student-to-faculty ratio of 5:1, the school remains vastly underserved. With little to no resources, the volunteers from the Nazarene churches aim to help in any way possible.

Even though Williams became a Christian when he was 10 years old, his faith really expanded during his formative years in high school.

“Lots of summer camps, lots of mentoring from my youth pastor, lots of scripture reading, lots of praying,” Williams said.

“I would say that my faith was solidified and really formed during my high school years.”

He’s been going to the Grace Pointe Church of the Nazarene since 2010 after he and his wife realized how much they loved the community and thought they could help serve God through the church.

Williams likes to help out with

things such as construction or mentoring at the church.

Recently, he has grown a love for helping on mission trips.

Williams and 25 others will go to the school over fall break for the second year in a row. The goal of this year’s mission trip is to aid and educate the Navajo Indian children by helping with repairs and construction, being supportive and mentoring the students.

The hope is that the volunteers will build a fence and repair the decks and entryways. They also want to make the dormitories more handicap accessible.

One of the people who follows Williams on his trips is Pastor Angel Diaz. He also volunteered last year alongside Williams and hopes to do it again over the upcoming two-week break from school.

Ever since Diaz met Williams at church, he has seen Williams become more involved.

“He enjoys helping people, whatever the situation may be,” Diaz said. “That may be locally with whatever needs that they have or going away with a program.”

Back in college, Williams met his wife Hollie Williams through the same group of friends. Now, the two spend their time getting closer to each other in church.

Hollie and Williams are co-work-and-witness leaders for their district church of the Nazarene and work alongside other Nazarene churches in the area.

“I’ve seen him trust God more in stronger ways,” Hollie said, “and it’s helped him lead our family.”

Even though Melanie isn’t able to see them during the school day, she feels that she is lucky to be able to have the opportunity to work with them.

Lauren also says she feels lucky to have good in-laws.

She is very appreciative to have such a healthy relationship with her family and being able to work with them is something that not every family is able to do.

The Davises and Bohanan feel like they have built a strong foundation when it comes to them working together. They think that they have a healthy relationship that not all people are lucky to have.

“I really enjoy working with my family. Some people might not like it especially if it’s your in-laws, but I got blessed with really amazing in-laws,” Lauren said. “We are all really close. We hang out all the time, and it’s nice having a support system just straight across the hall over at guidance.”

Professional women’s sports deserve more attendees

O

n Aug. 30, 92,003 people broke a world record when they filed into Memorial Stadium in Nebraska to watch the Cornhuskers women’s volleyball team demolish Omaha, setting a world record for the highest number of people attending a women’s sporting event at one time.

Even though this might not sound like much, this record is a huge milestone. Any major recognition of women’s sports, such as a recordbreaking number of fans watching a women’s team play, is a step taken towards fair acknowledgment and treatment for female athletes.

While I agree completely that the world record being broken is an important and progressive event, we should be past the point in women’s sporting history at which 92,003 people is a record-breaking number of attendees at a game.

Let me explain.

While 92,003 people is, of course, a lot, let’s put this number in perspective.

According to Statista, the average number of attendees per NFL game was 67,288 people in 2021. That’s only 24,715 fewer people.

Every year, also according to Statista, the Super Bowl attracts more than 70,000 people. That’s around 22,000 fewer people.

Twenty-two to 24,000 people is significant, but we just compared a world record to an average professional football game in the U.S. The difference in attendance between women’s sports and men’s is obvious and staggering.

There are many factors that may contribute to this difference. Men’s sports have more of a history, and in some cases, they are able to compete better due to various biological f a c t o r s .

People’s personal preferences a l s o determine what they might watch.

However, we often ignore the other side of things.

The previous world record for women’s sports attendance was set on April 22, 2022, for a Champions League soccer match in Barcelona.

Men’s sports have more of a history because they wouldn’t let women compete for countless decades. Men may be faster or stronger biologically, but this doesn’t make women’s sports less impressive or easier. They are pushing themselves to the limit just as men do, and sometimes, women have historically been better at certain sports.

So yes, there are reasons for this difference, but it is time to overcome them. At this point in history, we as a society should have recognized our bias and taken measures towards fixing it. In the end, it should have taken more than 92,003 fans present at a women’s sporting event to set a world record.

This is not to say the Cornhuskers haven’t worked hard or that they were undeserving of breaking the record. It was, in fact, extremely deserved. It’s not their, or any individual’s, fault for this bias.

However, it is our responsibility simply as members of society to care about this problem. We can all start improving by learning about and watching more women’s sports. And maybe, the next time this world record gets broken, you’ll be in the stands.

Playing on the same SHS sports team strengthens two pairs of siblings’ bonds

rowing up, senior Macy and freshman Marlee Chafin could always be found in their driveway playing volleyball together. The court has replaced their driveway now, as they are both on the same high school team playing the same position.

“That’s something we really bonded over (over) the years,” Macy said. “It’s really gotten us closer.”

However, the Chafin sisters are only one of many siblings at SHS that are involved in the same sport.

Sophomores Andreas and Alex Poulakis are twins on the SHS football team who have been playing football together since eighth grade.

“I (definitely got) more competitive,” Andreas said.

The two pairs of siblings, now fully into their respective sport’s season with each other, agree that being on the same team has brought them together, but it can come with some challenges.

Alex says that it can be annoying having a twin brother in general, but it makes him more of a competitive person.

Macy and Marlee, on the other hand, love having each other on the team.

Macy says that she has been waiting for this year in particular for a while. When she was in seventh grade, she did the math to figure out that she and Marlee could be on the same high school team for a year.

After this realization, she persuaded Marlee to play.

“I did the math and was like ‘okay, listen, if you play and I start playing, we can both play together my senior year,’” Macy said.

Marlee and Macy agree that so far this year, it has been fun when they are out on the court together in a varsity game.

In the end, Marlee agrees that playing together has brought them closer.

“We had a stronger bond,” Marlee said.

Macy says whenever they are bored at home and it’s not raining, they can always go outside and pepper, which is controlled volleying between two people, or play outside.

“We used to just be sisters, but now, I think volleyball has really made us become each other’s best friend,” Macy said.

“We can really go to each other for everything.”

On the other hand, the Poulakis brothers dislike some things about being siblings on the same team.

Both of the twins are better at different things, so it can be irritating to be compared to each other all the time.

However, the twins agree it has some positives.

“It’s helped us play on the same level, and we don’t want to be the same, so we both try to be better than the other,” Andreas said.

However, since their first year playing high school football was only their second year ever of playing football, besides some flag football when they were very little, having a brother made some things easier.

“I think it helps having a brother, just in general,” Andreas said.

Athletic Director’s wedding took him away from SHS during homecoming week

ancy clothes, nerves building and excitement high, Sept. 30 looked remarkably similar for SHS students and Athletic Director Nick Stevens.

But the two were hundreds of miles apart. While SHS students got ready for homecoming, Stevens got ready for his wedding.

Having his wedding the week of homecoming proved to have challenges, but the SHS administration team came together to keep athletics running smoothly in his absence. “(In) hindsight, (it was) probably not the best day to have a wedding scheduled, but it’s one of those (times)

where you just kind of have to roll with it,” Stevens said.

And roll with it he did.

When he first planned the wedding last year, Brian Murphy was still the head Athletic Director.

So then assistant Athletic Director Stevens checked with Murphy and the two agreed that Sept. 30, even though it was during homecoming week, would work for his wedding.

Things changed after Murphy left for New Palestine High School and Stevens got the job. But, Stevens still wasn’t too worried about it because he had an assistant whom he could trust to take care

of things. However, when the assistant had to step down due to family issues just days into the school year, Stevens realized that the date of his wedding posed some problems.

Knowing that the athletic office would be empty during a critical week in high school sports, Stevens has worked double duty over the past few weeks, making sure that all of his “ducks are in a row” so that the stress won’t fall on other administrators and he can fully focus on his wedding.

“I (didn’t) want this to be a difficult thing for anybody to help me out,” Stevens said.

Easy ideas to look your best this Halloween

icking a new yet trendy Halloween costume each year can be tough. Whether you’re going solo or with a group, the options are endless and overwhelming. But if you’re struggling to come up with ideas, here is some inspiration that can get you started with some very cool and cute costumes.

Single

Tinker Bell Tinker Bell is a classic every year.

Whether you do it by yourself, with a partner or even a group of friends to do the rest of the fairies, it’ll look good every time.

What to wear - You can find the full costume online, and Amazon has great options.

- If you’re looking for a DIY, a green satin mini dress is the place to start.

This can be found at the mall or on Amazon. For accessories, fairy wings and a wand can come from any party or halloween store.

- To spruce up the outfit, add body glitter, which can be found on Amazon or any makeup store, for that fairy effect. For shoes, flats work well, and adding a white puff on top really brings the outfit together.

Duo

Despicable Me Gru and his minion are for the funny friends. Just a duo, This costume will work well for any function whether it’s a duo or big group of friends.

What to wear - For the guys, wanting to dress up as a Gru doesn’t take much effort.

You’ll need a black zip-up jacket with a gray and black scarf to match. The bottom half of the outfit consists of black jeans and black shoes. These could possibly already be in your closet, but if they aren’t, you can find all of the items on Amazon or at a store like PacSun. - A minion takes a little more work, but it’s still on the simpler side. The base of the outfit is a yellow t-shirt and denim overalls. You’ll also need black gloves, boots and the goggles to top it off. To go above and beyond, you could use yellow face paint and even a wig or temporary dye for the hair.

- Another option for this costume is doing the purple minions, which would mean switching the yellow to purple. This means wearing a purple t-shirt, face paint and hair dye. The accessories can be found at a party or halloween store, and the outfit can be found at a craft store or Amazon.

Trio

Powerpuff Girls Powerpuff girls may be a kids show, but you can dress it up well no matter what.

What to wear - All three girls can wear matching sets to look amazing together. The sets can either be a skirt and top or matching mini dresses.

- Blossom is pink and should add a red bow to the hair.

Bubbles is blue and should add blue ribbons to some pigtails. Buttercup is green and doesn’t need anything in the hair, but adding green extensions or spray hair dye would finish the look up nicely.

- All three members of the group should wear white boots or shoes to match.

Group Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz is absolutely timeless and is another option that can serve many purposes. This costume idea can be for the girls who only have a couple friends or the ones who like to roll with a big crowd.

What to wear - Starting off strong, someone has to be Dorothy.

It is easiest to get her full costume at a party store or online. Add red sparkly heels and blue ribbons to finish the look.

- The next character should be the Tin Man. The base of the outfit starts with a silver mini dress. To keep up with the “tin” theme, add silver gloves and a tin hat on top. Silver or black shoes will finish up the outfit.

- Next we have the Cowardly Lion. A brown dress is a good start, with lion ears on the head and fingerless gloves that have the paw design on the palms. You should also wear white or black boots with this costume.

- The Scarecrow is the last main character. You can wear brown or denim shorts with a flannel tied up. There should also be a straw hat with black gloves and boots. To go above and beyond, add some straw poking out of the boots and gloves.

- The last two costumes, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, are for the bigger groups or to switch out with the main characters. Both characters should wear puffy dresses, which are trending right now, so it’s easy to find in stores.

The Wicked Witch wears a black one and Glinda wears a pink one. The accessories for the Wicked Witch include a hat, a broom, black and white striped tights or thigh high socks and is complete with black boots. Glinda’s accessories include white pumps, a tiara and a wand.

This movie incorporates every aspect of what a good Halloween movie should be. This fantasy/ comedy movie is definitely worth the watch.

They have to find out why all the monsters are turning evil. It’s a great low budget film, and if you’re looking for some nostalgia, this is the movie for you.

You watch as Coraline finds out the truth about the other world as the layers slowly peel back throughout the film. There are so many little details and foreshadowing in this movie. If you like a more dark and sinister Halloween movie, this is right up your alley.

This film is about “The Pumpkin King” Jack Skellington who doesn’t feel he has a true purpose when he discovers different doors leading to other holiday lands. He decides to go through the Christmas door and goes on a journey of self-discovery and love. I love this movie and the art style that is used is burned into what Halloween animated movies are.

The movie is a staple of what a Halloween movie should be.

Walpole’s why English teacher turns a negative past into a positive future

nglish teacher and dance coach Jessi Walpole walked through the house looking for her stepsister years ago, wanting to know if she needed the curling iron.

As she stepped out of her door, she was greeted by six rifles pointing towards her face, and next thing she knew, she was being handcuffed and thrown into the back of a van.

Walpole was born in December of 1986 and her parents divorced when she was just 2 years old. Her mother’s second marriage came quickly after but it was a very toxic and violent relationship.

“My mom and stepdad were constantly fighting.

My mom was hospitalized many times because of the violence … all of us kids were witness to that,” Walpole said.

Their unsafe and damaging relationship, along with her mother’s

drug issues not only made an impact on her parents but also took a major toll on Walpole in general, including her life at school.

Meanwhile, as Walpole’s mother and stepdad began to abuse drugs, he also began to sell them, specifically OxyContin.

Her mother and her mother’s doctor also began to commit Medicaid fraud for profit.

The FBI had been observing her mother and she was eventually arrested for selling OxyContin.

In November of 2001, one of Walpole’s classmates passed away from an OxyContin overdose, and everyone immediately began pointing fingers towards her mother, which changed her life in high school for the worse.

She was pushed down the stairs at school on multiple occasions, and at one point someone even

causing her to wreck into a tree.

“High school was hard because of that boy’s death and then my mom’s arrest … I was bullied,” Walpole said.

Walpole went through an extreme amount of traumatic events throughout her childhood and had to learn how to not let her surroundings and past define her.

From being severely bullied in high school, to having to carry the burden of her mom’s health due to her drug addiction, she struggled to find peace and comfort in her life.

The one thing that brought a feeling of joy and security to Walpole since it began was dance, not only dance itself, but her dance teacher Melissa Brassard, who grew to be like a sister to her.

Throughout growing up, Brassard seemed to be the one person Walpole could trust and who cared about her.

“I don’t know that I wouldn’t have walked off a cliff or given up or dropped out of school if she hadn’t made sure that I knew somebody loved me,” Walpole said.

Brassard coached the dance team and theater arts classes at Jennings County High School and taught Walpole in her first four years of teaching. As they became closer, Walpole began to feel more comfortable around her and they quickly developed a strong bond.

“She gave me a place just to sit and stare at the wall. She gave me a place to feel like I am not what my parents did,” Walpole said.

Brassard changed Walpole’s life by being what she needed. It wasn’t just helping her with her emotional struggles but also helping her pursue her dreams and helping lead her to where she is today.

“As a teacher, you never really know what kind of impact you may have on a

student in their future. I hoped that I made her feel loved, valued, heard and that she felt her own worth,” Brassard said in an email to The Journal.

Walpole’s main motivation in what she does today is to help students the same way Brassard helped her.

Former SHS student, Kaylie Fallowfield was on Walpole’s dance team and was impacted by her in a similar way Brassard impacted Walpole.

“First she was an English teacher to me and then I soon joined the dance team and around that time I had issues with my own family so Walpole really stepped up and was kind of like a parent figure to me,” Fallowfield said.

Throughout everything Walpole had to endure, there were people she never imagined would have such an impact in her life and getting her through it, and now she has the chance to do the same for her students.

“I have a purpose, I’m lucky that I know why I show up everyday,” Walpole said.

rom the moment Jessi Walpole was in second grade, she knew her calling. She was going to change the lives of students and provide them with an endless amount of support and dedication that she received from her teacher despite the difficulties she faced while growing up.

Giving them that glimpse of unconditional love, Walpole was able to begin her journey at the heart of SHS by being an English teacher and Dance coach. Although her journey was not easy, her passion for dance and teaching became her refuge, and she fought to make her dreams become a reality.

“I’m lucky that I know why I show up every day,” Walpole said. “I don’t ever say I’m going to work because I’m lucky enough to get to do something I’ve always wanted to do.” ...

Instead, some students started slacking off in class and creating mounds of missing assignments.

“If you talk to the teachers last year, the amount of student apathy that we experienced was higher than any year ever,” Fritz said.

But is this disinterest caused by laziness, or underlying mental health problems?

Reaching out

Because of the pandemic, many students were diagnosed with depression, eating disorders and a vast variety of other conditions.

Some students used medications and therapy to help, but others did not have those resources available. SHS started providing ways to help these students in hopes that the kids would see positive results.

They started spreading the word that their offices were available to anyone who needed it, making sure to reach each student who may be struggling.

They also started to offer many individual services to meet each student’s needs.

Some of these include Adult and Child sessions and pastoral care.

But, there are always students who do not speak up and can not be as easily reached.

To help them, counselors will often go class to class and speak about suicide and mental health. They also

have started playing videos mandated by the state during iPass, as well as providing out of school resources for their students.

The Indiana Crisis Hotline 988, is one of those resources.

But 988 goes beyond the initial phone call; they make sure to keep lending their help even after the conversation is over.

“Sometimes the care that they need is going to be more than you can provide on the phone,” Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Dr. Dan Rusyniak said.

This flood of resources has been provided to rebound mental health, decrease teen suicide and help und the lack of motivation caused by the pandemic. But with the depressing statistics, many have wondered if there has been any positive change whatsoever.

There are arguments that the videos played by administration about suicide awareness are useless, since students claim that nobody pays attention to them. But Fritz disagrees.

“But if one kid was (paying attention) and that saved their life, that’s worth it to me,” Fritz said. “That’s one more life we have here that we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Students agree that SHS and Indiana are making efforts into helping students with their mental health, but some think that there are better ways that they can reach kids.

“I think it could be more effective if they put more effort into bringing more awareness to it, rather than just pushing it aside,” Collins said.

While there are many accessible resources outside of school, Sung wants to remind students that there is always a team here at SHS for anyone to talk to.

Nobody has to go through their crisis alone, no matter what it is.

“Reach out to your teachers, reach out to your counselors, reach out to your school social worker so that we will be able to help you guys,” Sung said.

The clean girl aesthetic implies cultural appropriation

hen I was in elementary school, my mom used baby oil to slick my hair into a ponytail every day. I loved how it looked, so I wore my hair like that everyday.

Though most people around me wore their hair down, I still preferred to wear mine up.

Some of my friends also wore their hair in a similar manner, so I never felt like my hair was different from others.

Slicking back hair has been a staple in many cultures for centuries. The hairstyle has especially been popular among Black women, Latinas and South Asians. As a Punjabi young woman, I grew up slicking my hair back in a tight ponytail. Although I don’t do it as much now, it once was one of my favorite ways to do my hair.

I didn’t think much of my hair until people started to say mean things about it. I often got comments like, “your hair looks disgusting” or “you should try wearing it down.”

I was very shocked when I heard these remarks. I didn’t know that people could have such rude things to say about a hairstyle.

The clean girl aesthetic is a lifestyle that includes natural make-up, glossy lips and minimalistic clothes.

According to Lexington Line, other components of the clean girl aesthetic are “gold hoops, slicked back hair with smoothed down edges and dark brown lip liner.”

This specific look is often associated with celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Sofia Richie.

Many say that they invented the “aesthetic,” but they don’t realize that this isn’t necessarily something new.

Slicking back hair to strengthen it, applying dark brown lip liner and wearing gold hoops are all things that women of color have been doing for a long time.

South Asians, Latinas, Black women and women of other ethnicities and cultures have been doing these things for centuries, and they have gotten bullied for it.

However, when a celebrity that looks like Hailey Bieber does something like this, then it’s “cute” and “trendy.”

At this point, this aesthetic has become culturally appropriated. Many don’t know about the culture and rich history that comes with some of the components of the style.

A lot of people associate this aesthetic with celebrities without seeing it for what it actually stands for.

I believe that anyone should be allowed to slick their hair back or wear dark lip liner, but I also believe that you should appreciate some of the components of this aesthetic.

Yes, Hailey Bieber, Sofia Richie and other celebrities do a great job of rocking this aesthetic, but they didn’t necessarily create it. We need to accept and appreciate the rich history behind this trend.

For example, in my culture, slicking hair back with oil is a way to bring health to your hair, and women have been doing it for years to bring strength to their hair.

That doesn’t mean learning everything about the aesthetic’s history but understanding that it comes from a culture, and to someone else, it represents something more significant.

We need to learn to appreciate it so we don’t appropriate it.

My Turn(er) “I ain’t gonna live forever, I just want to live while I’m alive”

s we get further into the school year with classes picking up, teams having a slew of games and the workload getting heavier, it’s so easy to fall into a rabbit hole of stress. With this though, it’s important to think about the fact that it’ll always end up okay.

This year, I feel like I’m doing more than I ever have. I have two jobs along with all of my classes and extracurriculars, and it often feels like I don’t have much time for myself. There have been many times where I’ve thought about quitting it all and just trying to be me.

However, when I sit down and look at what seems like a never-ending to-do list, I have to remind myself to take each day as it goes and appreciate what I have.

What I do is what makes me me. It’s what makes me feel alive.

In the song “It’s My Life”

by Bon Jovi, they sing about seizing the day and living life to the fullest. The line “I ain’t gonna live forever, I just want to live while I’m alive,” has become my anthem lately as I’ve tried to embrace all of my commitments. I love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for anything, but sometimes it’s nice to know that I’m

making the right decision.

Each day, I have to lead myself with a reminder that senior year is only so short and that I won’t have these experiences forever.

Whether I’m spending hours in the computer lab or working on all of my assignments in my favorite classroom, I take each moment and soak up the fact that it won’t be the same forever.

In just seven short months, I’ll be moving onto college and be faced with issues more complex than being able to make it to all of my different meetings or practices. I’ll be learning how to live life on my own and try to set myself up for success after college. Because of this, it’s made me realize that the time I have left in high school really counts.

Throughout the past three years, I haven’t gone to many events. I like to stay in and hang out with my small group of people. But this year, I’ve already gone to about as many games as I went to in the past three years combined. I’m trying to branch out and take these events for what they are: the opportunity to spend time with my friends and celebrate my school.

“In college, I don’t want to sit idly by while my peers go out and take advantage of all the opportunities we’ll have.”

Beyond this year, I plan to use Bon Jovi’s words while I’m in college. I want to be the person who gets involved, not for the sake of being busy, but to immerse myself in the culture. I want to go to football games and tailgates. I want to find a group of friends who make the collegiate experience beyond worthwhile.

It’s been a long and winding road, but I’ve gotten to a point where I’m really enjoying what life has to offer, and I don’t want to waste what time I have left in high school. In college, I don’t want to sit idly by while my peers go out and take advantage of all the opportunities we’ll have. I want to use the next four years to branch out and flourish, because it’s my life.

The SHS administration wants to show school spirit their way year. There has always been a fairly ix hundred fifty out of 2,336. That’s

how many students attended this year’s fall pep session out of our entire student body.

This year, the pep session was held in between first and second period at 8:30 a.m. Fewer students attended this pep session compared to last year when all students attended during iPass. School spirit has declined, and the restrictions and the new applications for school events are not helping.

Since last year, students needed to apply for a school dance and then get approval to attend. Those with poor grades, spotty attendance or any disciplinary offenses were not allowed to attend. This year, that same process has been implemented for SHS’s pep sessions, and it prevents students from being able to show their spirit and pride for their school.

Why would a student want to express school spirit if they’re not allowed to?

Additionally, this year there are no outside guests allowed at both Homecoming and the Snowcoming

This is the opinion of the editorial board of The Journal dance. This means that if someone is not a student enrolled at SHS, they are not allowed to attend. It’s important to talk about why these restrictions are in place.

Last year at Homecoming, multiple fights broke out between students. It is rumored that these students did not attend SHS, which is why the decision to ban all outside students from attending this year’s homecoming dance was made.

While there are restrictions and bans that deter students from attending these school events, SHS does provide quite a few opportunities to encourage school spirit, one being free athletic event admission if students have their IDs. This is a great way to encourage school spirit among students.

But, the crowd for sporting events has been different compared to last

large crowd, but now there aren’t as many students that attend these games. It could be for a multitude of reasons such as schoolwork, work or transportation issues. Regardless of the reason, we all need to take better advantage of the resources we are given.

Another way to help boost spirit could be having a better sense of community. Yes, spirit clubs promote and boost athletic events, but it’s not enough. This can be brought through teachers and administrators being more encouraging for each student to have involvement. Whenever we have an engaging and welcoming environment, we will be a better school with a proud school spirit.

But students need to do their part too. They should should start attending games, dressing the themes and expressing themselves through our school spirit. We have the resources to become more proud of our school and more spirited, but it shouldn’t be forced or restricted.

Supportive sponsors Adopt-A-Worker program seeks to help small employees of big companies

n 1985, the first man committed to picking up trash on a two mile strip of a Texas highway. This was the start of the Adopt-A-Highway program, an initiative that has since been one of the most successful government partnerships of all time.

Seeing this success has motivated some very large industrial players to make their own private program similar to the initiative, Adopt-A-Worker.

Apple has taken the opportunity (that they are creating) to make their sweatshop workers available for supportive adoption.

Of course, they can’t allow their workers to be really adopted because then they would run out of people to be grossly underpaid.

A statement from Apple says, “We truly believe this will help our workers overseas to feel more appreciated in their work. We are obviously not going to do anything more for them, but if charitable people want to support these workers they can. Honestly we don’t really care if people are still going to buy the phones. So, do whatever you want.”

Starbucks is also opening a very similar program. They are advocating for people to help their workers in South

Both of these billion dollar companies see a massive opportunity for hands-off improvement. Their goal is to be as hands-off as possible because they can’t afford to put any real time or effort into it.

By “can’t afford,” they mean they aren’t able to spare any of their million dollar salaries for the higher ups in the company. They are focused strictly on ways to save money in order to pay the truly important workers as much as they want and need.

They don’t see their small workers as the most important people in the operation.

They understand that their operation might not be at its full potential without them, but, of course, real important

people are here in the U.S., where they can do their important work without being bothered about a few people being unhappy about their pay, or lack thereof.

The pressure has been on both of these companies. For Apple, it was the mysterious deaths of 14 Chinese employees, though they did invest in nets to put up so that no more workers would be lost, and that did show their love for their employees. But now, 13 years later, the pressure has built up slightly. Not to say they’re not doing a fantastic job of keeping it out of sight.

For Starbucks, they held off until now because they don’t even own the plantations as they buy from many different farms. So technically, they’re not even doing anything close to deplorable. But they’re a company that prides themselves on the “limitless possibilities of human connection” as they say in their mission statement, so the Adopt-A-Worker program was an obvious choice to connect themselves with.

Companies like these two are the reason the American people enjoy life so much.

They do great work because they care about making a difference. Sure, they’re worth

they’re worth about $3 billion combined, but that doesn’t mean they can’t side with the regular people of the world.

They just have chosen not to, until now.

So, take advantage of the Adopt-A-Worker program. It’s up to everyday people to get involved. Apple and Starbucks are just providing the opportunity to help the workers they pretend are invisible.

Along with many new policies this year, administration has decided to make a designated “Lovers Lane” on the west side of the school. Located at the corner of the English and math hallways, this stairwell is a safe place for couples to display physical affection for each other.

The staff has noticed sporadic and spread-out makeout sessions between couples getting broken up one too many times.

“Students would make faces and act like kissing in public is disgusting or something,” physics teacher Macey Matflock said. “They needed an area to safely express their emotions.”

One administrator at SHS also noticed couples being shamed for their public displays. Behavioral interventionist Lawstin Vanlashin brought up the idea of a special place for these kinds of students.

“We wanted to graciously segregate them so that they could be as happy as possible without the fuss of horrible kids who might bully them,” Vanlashin said.

Students have not yet used the stairwell, but if staff sees a couple kissing, they will kindly step in and let them know that they don’t have to do this in the middle of the hallway.

“I hate doing that kind of thing in private. It just seems unnatural to me,” freshman Gwen Wright said, “But if that’s what we have to do so we don’t get food thrown at us again, then I’ll do it.”

SHS students implement their religion in school

nspiring and uniting students back to Jesus is exactly what Youth Back to Jesus, UBTJ, hopes to accomplish. The club got its start before COVID-19, but like most clubs, when the pandemic hit, they had to resort to a virtual meeting system over Zoom.

Over the Zoom meetings, students read the Bible and prayed together.

Though the number of students attending the meetings was very low, the group persevered through the hard times. Now, the UBTJ

numbers are starting to grow, and they are continuing to help students’ grow their faith and touch the lives of many.

Senior Esther Li, former team leader of the club, played a big role in helping the club get its place on the map and getting students to attend meetings. Though she is not team leader anymore, she still plays an important role in the club and believes in its significance.

“With this club we are able to gather together, worship together and pray together …”

Li said. “We really desire to see our friends come back to Jesus Christ.”

The purpose of this club has not only helped Li but others who also are looking for a community to grow their faith in and connect with each other.

“Some of (the members) are freshmans and they are really shy, but through the work of God, we are reading and sharing our testimonies, (so) we form connections,” UBTJ member Abisak Awi said.

They also engage in something called “quiet time.” During this time, students read the Bible, share and pray together.

The environment of UBTJ is a place where students can relax after a long day of work at school.

For students like junior Nini Hniang, it’s a place where she can include her religion in her daily life at school.

With all the hardships that come with school and other extracurriculars, it doesn’t leave much time to focus on her walk with God. Hniang believes that the club is a great way for her to retain the religion aspect throughout her daily time at SHS. “Despite having to balance school work and clubs, I still try to find a way to connect with God,” Hniang said. “UBTJ helps me find ways to include God in my school life.”

UBTJ not only inspires and helps many student’s grow their faith and form communities of students who share a similar purpose, but also helps others who oversee the club.

SHS Teacher Lloyd Winebarger, who is also the sponsor of UBTJ, chose to facilitate the group after he had several students ask him if he would be willing to take the position. He knew about the hardships that come with finding a teacher that has time to host a club, so he decided he would lend a helping hand to the group.

Ever since supporting the group, he has met new students and seen how they carry out their passions.

“It’s really cool to watch them organize themselves and do all these things that they are really passionate about,” Winebarger said.

UBTJ continues to help students grow their faith and teach others about things they would have never have learned.

Though the start of the club had a rough start, the group was able to make something of themselves, and they have spent a lot of time making sure that UBTJ serves its purpose of bringing youth back to Jesus.

“We’re able to see what we’re struggling with and just pray for one another,” Li said, “(and) also pray for the other nations who do not know who Jesus Christ is.”
