Beautiful Scents

Based on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh First Nation, colonially known as Squamish, British Columbia, Leigh Joseph is a plant scientist turned entrepreneur who had a mission to create luxury skincare products from sustainably harvested ingredients. When Sḵwálwen Botanicals was born, she was committed to contributing positively to cultural knowledge renewal in connection to Indigenous plant foods and medicines. We absolutely love how each product has a Squamish name to honour the place where this plant knowledge comes from. How did Sḵwálwen Botanicals start?

I began creating skincare products to use for my children and as a creative outlet, crafting them with plant ingredients I sustainably harvested. I am an ethnobotanist, which is a plant scientist who studies the interrelationships between people and plants.

My research examines the link between healing and the renewal of Indigenous Plant Knowledge and practices related to ethnobotany. I gave some of my early iterations of products as gifts to elders and had a very positive response, which led me to starting a skincare business.

What were the challenges you faced in your entrepreneurial journey?

Being an entrepreneur is hard work! It is also so rewarding as all of the work you put in goes towards building something of your own and that follows your creative vision which is really exciting! I would say that entrepreneurship continues to offer up challenges that test my abilities to problem solve and be adaptive but this is also one of the things that helps me to develop further adaptability.

What does Sḵwálwen mean and how did you choose the name for the brand?

Sḵwálwen (skwall-win) translates to “heart” or “essence of being” in the Squamish language. This name honours the inspiration behind the business: building connections to the land through working with plants in a way that feeds one’s heart and spirit. The name is a powerful guiding light for the business, and aligns with our aim of contributing to cultural resurgence.

How is the process of combining traditional Indigenous medicine to modern beauty industry practices?

Being able to draw on cultural knowledge and community-based experiences through my

post-secondary research and personal learning in connection to plants brings deep meaning to being able to turn to this inspiration for how I approach running Sḵwálwen as a business. These experiences have taught me how to combine Indigenous knowledge in an entrepreneurial endeavor in respectful and ethical ways. For example, I don’t share sensitive or sacred information about plants. I’m careful to tell the story of the relationships between plants and people but to respect knowledge that has been shared with me and isn’t to be shared on a larger scale or platform. I come back again and again to my personal experiences and relationships with plants and what it means to be in connection with the land and this is the foundation for Sḵwálwen.

How do your products differentiate from others in the market?

Honouring traditional Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) plant knowledge, Sḵwálwen products incorporate heritage botanicals that are gentle on your skin and carry ancestral knowledge and place-based alchemy.

Our formulations feature sustainably sourced and harvested ingredients and draw from the cultural and ceremonial aspects of plants. Free from chemicals, fillers, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic colors and parabens, every product has a Squamish name to honour the place where this plant knowledge comes from.

How is your creative process in developing a new scent or product?

I close my eyes and imagine being on the land. I breathe in and walk on the landscape and notice the plants in my mind’s eye. I notice if it’s rained lately or if the hot sun is releasing the volatile oils from aromatic plants.

I picture conifers and the beautiful scents they carry when you crush a needle or scale from the branches.

The scent profiles I love are inspired by the land and plants.

What’s the importance of Indigenous representation in luxury brands and how can Sḵwálwen Botanicals example support future Indigenous entrepreneurs?

Through Sḵwálwen, we share stories, images and context for connecting self care to the land from an Indigenous perspective. This creates new narratives that are a contrast to the trauma-based perspective often presented in mainstream media regarding Indigenous people. Our storytelling is grounded in the beauty and strength of Indigenous knowledge and culture. Through increasing Indigenous representation in the beauty and skincare space, we are adding our voices and perspectives as Indigenous women into spaces where they would not have been heard before.

My vision for Indigenous entrepreneurs is to see themselves reflected across all aspects of society ~ to feel they belong, that their voices matter, they matter.

As Sḵwálwen continues to grow in the luxury beauty space, we are contributing to creating a path for other Indigenous entrepreneurs, a path that is essential for economic reconciliation and strengthening Indigenous economies in culturally-grounded ways.

What tips can you give to consumers for better choosing skincare and beauty products?

I would say to learn more about the brand itself, is there transparency about the ethos of the brand?

What is the story behind the products and the reason why the products are created in a certain way? Once we start looking into the deeper story behind skincare brands we quickly find out information about the ingredients, how the brand approaches wellness and beauty and if the brand gives back in any way. These are all things that are important to me both as a brand owner and as an individual.

What are your favourite ways and tips to use the Kalkáy Healing Salve, included in the Spring 2022 Jilly Box?

We love this product around our house! I use it on any kind of dry skin or minor irritation to soothe and hydrate. My kids love putting this salve on a bandaid to help little cuts or scrapes heal. It can be used as a lip balm, or to treat dry hands from all of the hand washing.

I love that you can bring this salve anywhere, I’ve had customers reach out and say they’ve brought it on remote mountaineering or ski trips in their first aid kit or travelled with it to far off place and have loved bringing a little reminder of home with them.

What are your plans for Sḵwálwen Botanicals this year?

I approach our business model like a plant with a seasonal lifecycle. The roots are the foundational teachings that we follow in Sḵwálwen, the stem is the growth, the leaves are the opportunities for learning and partnerships, and the flowers and fruit are the beauty we put out into the world.

My vision for Indigenous entrepreneurs is to see themselves reflected across all aspects of society ~ to feel they belong, that their voices matter, they matter.

This will be a year of extensive growth and learning as we aim to amplify our storytelling through new media channels, expand our retail partnerships into the US market, and elevate our packaging through intentional design that further captures the depth and beauty of Sḵwálwen skincare and wellness offerings.

What are some of the ways Sḵwálwen gives back to the community??

Giving back to the land and Indigenous communities is central to us. We give back through two key initiatives: our Ceremony Series and the hiýáḿ Project. The Ceremony Series is a seasonal offering of small batch, handmade skincare and wellness experiences, with 10% of proceeds of each Ceremony release donated to organizations that support Indigenous causes.

The hiýáḿ Project is a collaboration with Saanich Native Plants that facilitates thousands of seeds planted on Indigenous lands. Through its philanthropic partnerships, Sḵwálwen elevates Indigenous communities and shines a light on the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples.

For example, I LOVE having my couches facing each other so that all we have to do is push them together and BOOM, it’s a movie marathon cuddle fest! If you love hosting your friends and family over like I do, It’s key that your house feels open and spacious. My best tip is to pull your couches away from the wall. That way, your space feels more conversational and will look more balanced!
