Welcome to the Summer 2022 Jilly Box! My goal this summer is to spend as much time as I can outside; soaking up the sunshine, breathing in the warm air and planting my fingers in the dirt (and my butt in the sand!). Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like I’ve been cooped up indoors for far too long and I’m itching to get outside! Can you relate? I’m already counting down to time spent at the farm, making sweet memories with loved ones (including my beautiful agent and co-founder of The Jilly Box, Tyler Evans!), spending time in the garden, and enjoying all of the simple moments summer offers such as beach side picnics, cutting our own flower arrangements and picking wild asparagus. The Summer 2022 Jilly Box is an invitation for you to embrace and enjoy those simplistic moments that fill your heart! Whether that’s purchasing produce from your local Farmers Market, enjoying a sunshine filled picnic, going for a warm evening bike ride, or by saying “yes” to those last minute BBQ invites.

Jilly’s Vegan Caesar Cocktail

We’ve taken the famous Canadian-inspired Caesar and made it, you guessed it, VEGAN! Traditionally, this drink is made with Clamato juice, but we’ve substituted it with vegetable juice, making it completely vegan and vegetarian friendly!

PR E P TI M E 5 Minutes S E RVI N GS 1 Cocktail I N G R E D I E NTS 1 cup of vegetable or tomato juice 2 handfuls of ice cubes 1 oz of vodka ¼ tsp of vegan Worcestershire sauce 3-5 drops Tabasco sauce 1 tablespoon of pickle juice 1 teaspoon of lemon juice 1 teaspoon of lime juice Kanel Summer Sea Salt S U GG E STE D GA R N IS H E S Celery stick Lime wedge Lemon wedge Pickled asparagus

D I R EC TIO NS: 1. Pour a small amount of your Kanel Summer Sea Salt into a shallow bowl (enough to coat the rim of your desired cocktail glass). 2. Using your desired cocktail glass, rim the glass with a lime wedge to wet it and press the rim of your glass into the shallow bowl of Kanel Summer Sea Salt to create the salted rim. Fill your glass with ice cubes. 3. Pour your choice of juice, vodka, Tabasco sauce, vegan Worcestershire sauce, pickle juice, lemon juice and lime juice into your glass and stir together. 4. Garnish with lime wedge, lemon wedge, celery stick, dill weed, and/or pickled asparagus!

Made with Love in Morocco Sarah Henderson, the founder of Hudson and Oak, was on a mission to design high quality ceramic products that matched her minimalist style. She knew that finding the right artisans to help make her dream a reality was her next step, and in 2019 Sarah found herself making the trek overseas to Morocco to begin her search! Fast forward to today, a family-owned ceramic studio of eight generations are the artisans that created the Summer Scallop Planter in your Jilly Box!

Join me in this season’s Supplier Spotlight where I go behind the scenes with Sarah on all about Hudson and Oak and their adorable products!

How did Hudson and Oak begin? Hudson and Oak really began when I got the keys to my first apartment, a two story loft. I can still remember it! It was an empty palette, and it was mine. I could decorate any way I wanted to. I have always loved all things home decor, since a young age, but it wasn't until my sister visited my loft apartment and said it had a feeling of being "cold", that it all started. At the time my home decor style was more so industrial and she suggested adding greenery to warm the space up. So I went on the hunt for plants and I realized very quickly that I couldn't find the right planter that matched my style. With a combination of my love for home decor, my background in marketing and the entrepreneurial itch to start something of my own, Hudson and Oak was born right on my couch in my 600 sq ft condo. Who are your products for? Our home goods are made for the well-lived home! Homes where guests are hosted, TV series are watched, dogs and cats are near and laughter abounds. We design home goods that accompany the cozy indoors after those long days outside. Designed with clean lines and functional features for your office, kitchen or any room in your home. Where does your inspiration come from? When designing a new product, the idea always stems from a need for a product that I want for my home! The thing I love most about Hudson and Oak is, that it has evolved along with my own home needs. It first started with planters in my mid-20s, when I was just getting interested in plants. I then designed our tableware collection from a love for hosting family and friends. Every new collection that we release is a reflection of a new stage in my life. The Jilly Box planter reflects my new found interest in outdoor gardening, and I am excited to see my brand continue to evolve

and develop as I go through these different stages in life. How was the process of designing a product for The Jilly Box in collaboration with Jillian? To be able to design a custom home decor item with Jillian has been such a highlight for me and for Hudson and Oak! To be a part of The Jilly Box is a really exciting part of my career professionally and personally. I have followed Jillian from her early days on Love It or List It Vancouver and I drew so much design inspiration from her first home in Vancouver and her current home in Kelowna. What makes the Summer Scallop Planter so unique? This planter is made from 100% porcelain, locally sourced clay from Morocco, and finished in a non-toxic/lead free glaze. In the process of making the Summer Scallop Planter, which takes over five hours, all water used in production is reused, allowing us to offset any emissions used for the production! While designing the Summer Scallop Planter, we wanted to create a timeless table top planter to be enjoyed for many years to come. We went with the prettiest soft oyster white in a semi-matte finish that will wear and age beautifully well in any home decor style. The last design element we added was a delicate scallop design on the rim with a classic French inspiration. How did you find the right artisans in Morocco to bring your vision for these products to life? It's actually a funny story. When I was visiting Morocco at the end of 2019, I was on a mission to find the right partner to work with our new ceramics collection. At this point it was simply a concept and a few drawings I had in my J I L LY B O X . C O M | 1 7

notebook. In the city of Marrakesh, it is more of a massive market and all the goods are actually made on the outskirts of the city and beyond. When walking around the souks, I kept asking what city was this made in? Do you do custom work? After talking to a few souk owners, I was pointed in the direction of Safi city, a beautifully quiet town off the Atlantic coast, about 2 hours outside of Marrakesh. So the next morning, I got in a cab to Safi city. I had zero plans, zero contacts, no idea where I was even going, to be completely honest. All I asked the cab driver was to bring me to local ceramic makers. He did just that, I walked in using google translate to explain what I was looking for, and within 20 minutes I was meeting with one of the owners of a ceramic studio of eight generations, where his family started back in 1832. We went for lunch, we ate tagine, went over designs, grabbed a few samples and the rest is history! Do you have any tips on how to take care of the Scallop Planter? You can keep it outside all summer long, but when we start to see those below zero temperatures, we suggest bringing it inside 18

or storing it inside your shed. Your planter will be perfect all year long inside. Place your new planter on your favourite shelf, credenza, coffee table or anywhere in your home that you want to add a touch of greenery! What plants would you recommend to grow in it? That is a hard question. The short answer is: this planter is so versatile! You can style it indoors and outdoors! Personally, I am so excited to style a trio of The Jilly Box Summer Scallop Planters outside on my back deck planting rosemary, thyme and lavender. For indoors, I am going to style the planter on my coffee table with a mini indoor olive tree. For someone who is just beginning, is there a special houseplant you can suggest? I would start with one of my favourite plants, the ZZ (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia). It has lower water requirements and tolerates a wide range of conditions, including low light. They grow naturally shiny dark emerald green leaves, which are absolutely gorgeous.

You had a goal of being plastic-free by the end of 2021. What challenges did you face in achieving this goal? Our goal for plastic-free by the end of 2021 took over 12 months to plan and establish. The main target in the goal was our packaging, since a majority of our business is online. For our larger items that ship in boxes over 20 inches, they do require the occasional use of bubble wrap and styrofoam in unique cases. We worked closely with a box manufacturer in Vancouver for all of our tableware packaging, made out of 100% recycled materials and printed in Vancouver, eliminating the use for plastic. We are very excited to launch in 2022 a recycled honeycomb packaging for larger shipments. This will protect the items, while being 100% recyclable and zero plastic waste. We are always evolving and continuing to search for ideal packaging that has the lowest environmental impact possible, while delivering customers orders safe and sound. Can you offer any advice on how a business can become more environmentally friendly? Start small. Evaluate your business, full picture and what small change you can make first. What suppliers are you using? What are their core values? What materials are you using? Think about every aspect down to the shipping materials you use, what ink are they printed with? Where are they being printed? How long did that packaging have to travel to get to your warehouse? Are you offsetting emissions? The major win for small businesses with becoming more environmentally friendly can come down to simply their shipping materials. Switching to a local box manufacturer rather than using boxes that were made overseas and then shipped to Canada. There are amazing, affordable options to make the switch to packaging that is made from 100% recycled materials, environmentally safe inks and made in your home city. J I L LY B O X . C O M | 1 9

Styling the Summer Jilly Box I don’t know about you, but getting to pull out my summer wardrobe after what felt like the LONGEST winter season gets me SO excited! This summer, you’ll see me rockin' the Smash + Tess Garden Jillyalls, the Tentree Jilly Lemon Print Scarf, and the Tuti Baby Slides from Freedom Moses, all from this season’s Jilly Box, besides other staple items from my closet! Today, I’m going to share a few of my favourite ways to style each of these pieces and I would LOVE to see how you style yours! 3 SIMPLE STE PS TO

Create a Flower Arrangement Over the years, I’ve gathered so many amazing tips on creating simple yet stunning flower arrangements, and, spoiler alert… it’s not as hard as you think! Besides sourcing the flowers you’d like to use for your arrangement, all the supplies you need can likely be found in your home! That’s right, all you will need to create a beautiful arrangement are scissors, a vase (feel free to get creative here!), some tape and a little patience!

CHOOSE YOUR FLOWERS

When it comes to choosing flowers, there’s no need to complicate it! Start by exploring the local flower shops and markets in your area, and don’t shy away from using wildflowers or even fresh blooms from your own garden! The number of flower stems you’ll need depends on the size of vase you decide to go with. Larger vases will require more stems, and, of course, the smaller vases will need less! It's always better to have too many flowers, rather than not enough! Personally, I’ve found that using one variety of flower, perhaps in a few different colours, looks SO good! Some of my favourites to use include are roses, hydrangeas, peonies, and ranunculus. When it comes to selecting flower colours, you can’t go wrong with a nice white, cream, (or pink, of course!) arrangement. However, this is totally up to you and what makes YOU happy!

CUT & ASSEMBLE YOUR FLOWERS

Now onto the fun part, assembling your blooms! AKA; creating your masterpiece! I’m going to let you in on one of my favourite tips on how to add shape and stability to any flower arrangement. All you need to do is cut 4-8 strips of tape and stick them on your vase in a checkerboard position. While you cut each stem, cut them at different heights and place them in your vase, in between the pockets of tape, one by one! Think of it this way: we want the flowers to look pretty from all angles, not just one side, so be sure to place them all around the vase!

CHOOSE YOUR VASE

Anything can be a flower vase if you set your mind to it, LOL! Whether it’s a bud vase, a champagne bucket, an empty candle, a pretty mason jar, or even a cute empty (and washed!) can will do the trick! Your flower vase should be something that matches your style, and the flowers that you chose! For example, if I’m styling more dainty flowers, I would use a bud vase, if I’m styling a larger flower, like hydrangeas, I would use one of the larger style vases!

There you have it! Three simple steps to creating a beautiful and simple flower arrangement. I hope that this inspires you to grab some blooms, maybe even include your BFF’s, and get creative!
