Around 1, 600 anti-Israel protesters attended a demonstration in central London calling for the obliteration of Israel at the annual Al-Quds rally on Saturday.

Shaykh M ohammad Saeed Bahmanpour addressed the crowd telling pro-Palestinian followers that Israel should be wiped from the map and Z ionists’ days were numbered.

Hezbollah flags flew once again despite 12, 000 people signing a petition imploring H ome Secretary Sajid Javid to ban all aspects of the Lebanon-based political party and militia.

Protesters unashamedly waved the controversial flag, which is allowed if they support only the ‘political’ wing in spite of calls from London M ayor Sadiq Khan for the Home Office to proscribe both wings.

“We should not have to be here on the streets of London protesting against a terrorist flag,” Hendon MP Matthew Offord reportedly said.

“We hear there are two wings to H ezbollah, the political wing and the military wing. There is not.”

T he C ampaign Against Anti-Semitism petition states that H ezbollah was “a genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organisation” whose Deputy-General has mocked the distinction between its ‘political’ and ‘armed’ wings.

The Home Office notes Hezbollah is committed to the ‘armed resistance’ to the State of Israel and aims to seize all Palestinian territories and Jerusalem from Israel.

Arguably the most noteworthy sight was Jewish lawyer M ark Lewis singlehandedly halting the rally for nearly an hour by refusing to move his wheelchair.

“I was ready for violence,” he reportedly told Israel News Agency.

Demonstrators gathered outside the Saudi Arabian embassy prior their march towards Downing Street but were unable to progress after Mark, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, refused to budge.

T he lawyer attended the rally with the UK branch of the H erut political party, a right-wing Z ionist party founded by M enachem Begin.

“I take ex ception with the H ezbollah flags and the inflammatory speeches calling for the destruction of a country,” he reportedly said.

“H opefully we got the message across. Enough is enough – we need to ban terrorists marching through our streets. 2018 has to be the last year, otherwise there will be an even bigger counter-protest nex t year.”

Prince William historic Israel schedule announced

Prince William will meet Prime M inister Benjamin Netanyahu and President R euven R ivlin during his historic four-day M iddle East trip.

T he non-political nature of his role allows a spotlight to be brought to bear on the people of the region, their cultures, young people, aspirations and ex periences.

During the visit, T he Duke will meet young entrepreneurs, view vibrant tech and media sectors, witness historic cultures being protected and interpreted for the 21st century, and meet people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including refugees, with a particular focus on young people.

T he Duke will also meet senior political and religious leaders alongside a wide range of people drawn from across business, civil society, the arts and media.

T he Duke of C ambridge arrives in Israel on 25 June, following his visit to Jordan, and in what is the first official visit by a British royal to Israel his first engagement is at Y ad Vashem.

T he Duke and Duchess of C ambridge visited Stutthof concentration camp last year and also a memorial to murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin so this visit will be particularly poignant.

His Royal Highness will hear first-hand

testimonies from a H olocaust survivor and Kindertransport prior to laying a wreath in memory of those who died at Y ad Vashem’ s H all of R emembrance where he will leave a personal message in the visitor’ s book before departing.

C hief R abbi Ephraim M irvis will accompany Prince William during the ceremony.

T he Duke then travels to the residences of the Prime M inister and President before journeying to Jaffa where he will meet young people at the Equaliser and Peres C entre for Peace who focus on co-ex istence projects between different religious and ethnic communities.

After participating in a penalty shoot-out football event with young Israeli Jews and Arabs in the programme he will spend time with children and teenagers involved in projects, including one focused on empowering young women.

T he Duke will travel to T el Aviv for an event to be announced prior to a reception with British Ambassador to Israel David Quarrey before returning to Jerusalem.

T he following day, he returns to T el Aviv where engagements include visiting Beit H a’ ir M useum designed for artists, writers and scholars where he will meet four startup companies.

T he Duke also attends a civil society reception, meeting groups of young people

engaged in the fields of youth activism, social impact and the environment.

F rom here, the programme shifts to R amallah where he will meet Palestinian Authority President M ahmoud Abbas.

The Duke will deliver his final speech of the tour at a reception in Jerusalem.

T he programme shifts to the Old C ity from a viewing point at the M ount of Olives prior to paying his respects at the tomb of his great-grandmother, Princess Alice.

Both T he Duke of Edinburgh and T he Prince of Wales have made previous visits here.

A spokesman for T he Duke said the Duke wants to meet people from as many walks of life as possible and to use his visit to celebrate their hopes for the future.

A Palace statement said:” The historic nature of this tour is of course important and the Duke considers it a great privilege to be undertaking the first ever official Royal tour of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian T erritories and to be able to help further strengthen the friendship between Jordan and the United Kingdom.

“M ore importantly, however, the Duke is looking forward to building a real and enduring relationship with the people of the region.

“In particular, he is pleased that his programme will allow him to meet a number of people from his own generation and young Jordanians, Israelis, and Palestinians.

Petition grows against Yachad Board criticism

BY LEAH WAXLER A petition slamming Israel-bashers Y achad for criticising the Board of Deputies over its response to the recent Gaza crisis is rapidly reaching its target.

After incoming and outgoing Presidents of the Board issued its statement on the issue last month left-wing Y achad encouraged supporters to email them deploring the statement.

“Y et again Y achad has shown the hollowness of its claim to be ‘pro-Israel,” the petition noted.

BoD President Jonathan Arkush and President-Elect M arie van der Z yl reacted to the violence at the Israel-Gaza border by stating they were profoundly anguished at the violent scenes and loss of life at the Israel-Gaza border.

“No state could allow its borders to be breached by those who openly wish harm to its civilians,” they noted.

“Israel is defending its people from repeated violent attempts at mass invasion.

Other renowned recipients include historian Simon Schama, philanthropist Lloyd Dorfman and M P Louise Ellman.

Ben was instrumental in helping establish H olocaust M emorial Day in the UK and was a member of the Prime M inister’ s H olocaust C ommission, whose work heralded the development of the national H olocaust M emorial and Learning C entre in Victoria T ower Gardens.

Ben is also President of the 45 Aid Society for H olocaust survivors.

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: “Ben has worked tirelessly, over many decades, to encourage community cohesion and combat intolerance and hatred. H e has used his public profile as a Holocaust survivor to ensure that H olocaust commemoration has remained on the national agenda.”

Professor Simon Schama, famed for his BBC ‘T he Story of the Jews’ is also knighted.

The Cabinet Office paid tribute to his prolific work, including over 40 documentaries and books translated into 15 languages on topics such as slavery, American R evolution,

Bibi defends Trump after North Korea summit

Israeli Prime M inister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has backed President Donald T rump’ s initiative to denuclearise both North Korea and Iran.

T rump’ s nuclear summit with Kim Jong Un was a landmark occasion as the US president declared is heralded “a bright new future”.

As the world watched with interest and intrigue what was months ago inconceivable as leaders traded insults and nuclear threats, Trump declared “a very special bond” had been formed.

Trump promised to end “war games,” with ally, South Korea, at a later press conference.

“I commend US President Donald T rump on the historic summit in Singapore,” he said on his official website.

“This is an important step in the effort to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.

“President T rump has also taken a strong stand against Iran’s efforts to arm itself with nuclear weapons and against its aggression in the M iddle East.

“This is already affecting the Iranian economy. President T rump’ s policy is an important

development for Israel, the regions and entire world.”

T rump and Kim signed a joint statement agreeing to work toward a denuclearised Korean Peninsula, although the timeline and tactics were unclear.

“The world will see a major change,” he said as Kim had left the past behind.

Palestinians call on UN to slam Israel over Gaza

BY ADAM MOSES Palestinian supporters appealed to the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution condemning Israel’ s “ex cessive use of force” in Gaza at an emergency meeting yesterday.

Arab and Islamic nations went to the 193-member assembly as there are no vetoes following a U.S. veto of a similar resolution in the Security C ouncil earlier this month.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki H aley labelled the

Kuwait’ s resolution criticising force used by Israel as “grossly one-sided” as it failed to note the actions of H amas in Gaza.

H aley sent a letter to U.N. member states noting the imbalance and basic missed truths about the situation in Gaza.

Her proposal condemns Hamas for firing rockets into Israel and inciting violence along the Gaza-Israel border fence putting civilians at risk.

The proposal also condemns tunnels infiltrating Israel and rockets fire that has taken

place.

H aley described the amendment as “not controversial” but condemning behaviour “as harmful to the Palestinian people.”

T he letter said the amendment would be voted on before the resolution.

Israeli teen in serious condition after Afula café stabbing

BY ADAM MOSES An Israeli student was stabbed by a Palestinian in a terrorist attack at an Afula café on M onday.

18 -year-old Shuva M alka was travelling to a school ex amination when she was attacked sustaining stab wounds on her upper body.

A paramedic at the scene said Shuva required “life-saving first aid”.

A hospital spokesperson said she arrived in a serious condition but been stabilised.

Shin Bet Police confirmed the assailant, identified as Nur Sinau from Jenin, refused calls to stop, he fled the scene before being arrested.

H e was discovered carrying a knife, according to Police.

Elsewhere, a bomb was discovered at an entrance to the T omb of the Patriarchs in H ebron.

T he improvised ex plosive device was blown up by police in a controlled ex plosion on Sunday evening.

From behind the Editor’s desk T wo weeks ago, our Ask the R abbi columnist R abbi Schochet responded to a question regarding the recital of Kaddish for H amas terrorists that took place outside Parliament. H e said that these people had ‘sold their brothers and sisters down the river,’ and referred to it as ‘Kapo-ism.’

Olivia M arks-Woldman from the H olocaust M emorial Day T rust issued a press release from her office strongly condemning the use of the phrase ‘Kapo-ism’.

Rabbi Schochet last week apologised for any offence caused by his use of the word, yet clearly wrote that the act of saying Kaddish for a terrorist is a completely inexc usable act, and that he only apologised for the phraseology used, not for the strong points he was making.

T his brings us on to more fundamental issues that are quite worrying. Why was M arks-Woldman silent in the immediate aftermath of the Kaddish being recited for terrorists, and why did she only become vocal to criticize the people who criticized the event?

Perhaps she could have issued a statement attacking the Kaddish itself, asking the participants if perhaps they had thought this through properly?

Kaddish of all prayers is especially sensitive to so many people who have lost a loved one. In addition, how many millions of Jews who were murdered in the H olocaust never had a Kaddish recited for them at all? What about the countless other victims of the Shoah who did have Kaddish recited for them, tragically many years earlier than they would have expe cted?

Serious questions must also be asked of T he Liberal Judaism M ovement, who publicly distanced themselves from the event, despite the fact that one of their employees actually led the Kaddish. In addition, Leah Jordan does not appear to have been asked to retract her claims in another Jewish newspaper, where she wrote ‘how proud’ she was to have led the Kaddish.

One is subsequently left to wonder how seriously as a movement they view this incident. If a United Synagogue R abbi did something similar, one can imagine that the said R abbi would certainly have been told to retract a statement like that, at the very least.

In addition, we question UJIA, who have announced that they are more than happy for one of the participants from the Kaddish to lead a tour group that they help to fund around Israel this summer. M iss M orris-Evans was also allowed space in a Jewish newspaper, where she wrote that in her opinion, the actions of the IDF was akin to murder. She has since apologised for her words, however perhaps, she could go even further by issuing a statement ahead of her trip thanking the IDF in advance for protecting her and her chanachim whilst they will be out in Israel.

It is clear that no one has really come out of this Kaddish fiasco with any great credibility. T he community has been left with far more questions than answers.

T he chasm between the right and left seems wider than ever.

H owever, this newspaper will make one thing crystal clear. Whilst we don’ t always agree with every political decision that is taken in the Knesset, we will absolutely always defend Israel’ s right to defend its borders from terrorism. No country in the world should have to live with daily incoming rockets, some of which land in kindergarden playgrounds, with each missile fired with pure intent to kill.

If any organisation remains silent when a country which protect their citizens basic rights to live, is criticized and horribly mocked in public by members of their own faith with the most sensitive of prayers, yet jump up in anger the moment the mockers are criticized, w e will condemn them.

We find it simply astonishing how other Jewish newspapers can slate the very country that safeguards the exi stence of Jews around the world.

uncomfortable to witness, but they take every precaution possible to ensure that only terrorists die, not civilians, such as warning civilians by sending letters out of helicopters before a strike. T here are countless other exa mples of this down the years, which pro-Israel media outlets are only too happy to showcase, and the nonIsrael friendly newspapers are only too happy to ignore.

Israel was born out of the ashes of the H olocaust. H ow other Jewish newspapers can give a voice to people who have the opinion that they are ashamed to be Jewish, or that it is ok to say Kaddish for a terrorist whose sole mission is to rip out Jewish hearts whilst annihilating Israel and wiping it off the map, is beyond our comprehension.

As Golda M eir famously said, ‘We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.’

Ask yourself if the people who have criticized the Kaddish really are on a ‘path to self-destruction,’ as the R eform C hief R abbi recently stated, or are they just simply saying what needs to be said.

T hink of the countless Jewish people who have been tragically killed by terrorists in recent years, who’ s families would have rendered a heartfelt and gutwrenching Kaddish at their funerals. Perhaps they should have been the ones being remembered outside Parliament…

Dear Editor, R abbi Schochet was indeed mistaken in comparing the actions of the ‘Kaddish crackpots’ to ‘kapo-ism.’ I feel that they are worse. Let us clearly clarify what a kapo is or was. A kapo was forced into a position of either beat your brother or get beaten yourself.

T hey at least could argue they were trying to save their own lives, and one should not judge a person until he has been in their place. H owever, the ‘Kaddish crackpots’ have no such exc use; no-one forced them to do anything. T hey don’ t seem to care that many Jews from across the globe have been killed by terrorists, as they never gathered together to recite a Kaddish outside Parliament after every terror attack. T hey never read out all their names like they did for the H amas terrorists. T hey simply betray their own family to appease an immoral conscience.

As for other Jewish media outlets that are happy for their writers and columnists to bash Israel, they and their opinions are irrelevant to me. T heir lack of alliance and allegiance to their brothers in Israel who risk their lives on a daily basis to keep Jews around the world safe is despicable.

In Kaddish, we praise G-d’ s great name. As both liberal and reform Jews believe that belief in G-d and thus H is commandments, are optional, as is belief in his exi stence, w hy did they recite Kaddish, a prayer that praises G-d?

As an Orthodox Jew who understands the true meaning of the prayer, and has sadly said Kaddish for a loved one, do me a personal favour. Please either learn about your religion and study its authentic sources so at least if there were to be more terror attacks G-d forbid, you would know what Jews are dying for, or alternatively, keep your opinions to yourself, a s they do no good.

Dear Editor We are presently experiencing difficulty in getting a Minyan at the Vi & John R ubin H ome on a Shabbat morning. Due to the loss of some attendees and the lack of male residents we now need to call on members of the larger community to support our services. I am the present minister of the services and would like to form a rota of volunteers who could attend once or twice a year (numbers permitting). Ideally we need 2 people from outside each Shabbat morning.

T he service starts at 9.50am (plenty time for a Shabbat lay in!) and we finish about 12.15pm. Sometimes, time permitting, there is a Kiddush after the service. We need ext ra for all services including festivals. We often get just a M inyan and it only takes one man to have to go out to the toilet and the service comes to a standstill. Often we don’ t get a M inyan till after Shacharit and sometimes we have to go to the F ederation for ext ra men. All this delays the service and the residents have to attend their meals by a certain time thus forcing us to sometimes miss out sections are the end.

T o form a rota I am looking for over a hundred people who could attend just once a year. H opefully, two each service. Norwood appoints new Chief Executive

T he Norwood T rustee Board is delighted to announce, that following a robust recruitment process, Dr Beverley Jacobson has been appointed as the nex t C hief Ex ecutive of Norwood.

Bev has been C hief Ex ecutive of Kisharon for 10 years, having joined the charity in 2008 following a career previously in strategic management consultancy.

Bev will take up the appointment in succession to Elaine Kerr who announced last November that she would be leaving her role as C hief Ex ecutive for Norwood after six and a half years in the position.

Neville Kahn, C hair of the Norwood T rustee Board and T rustee recruitment panel, said: “I am delighted that Bev Jacobson has agreed to join Norwood as our new C hief Ex ecutive. Bev was appointed after a comprehensive recruitment process with many high calibre candidates.

Frances Segelman sculpts Holocaust survivor Ben Helfgott MBE Ben H elfgott M BE was sculpted in front of a live audience as part of a series of sculptures being created

by Leeds-born F rances Segelman, who has sculpted H M T he Queen, H R H Prince Philip and H R H Prince C harles.

F rances Segelman said: “I am thrilled and moved to be sculpting the legendary Ben H elfgott, my latest subject in a series of sculptures I am creating of H olocaust survivors living in the UK. It is such an honour to sculpt these ex traordinary people, in commemoration of those who perished and in recognition of those who survived.”

Ben H elfgott grew up in the town of Piotrkow, a town in Poland 26 miles away from Lodz and was nine years old at the time of the German invasion. In October 1939 he and his family were herded into what

was to become the first Nazi created ghetto in occupied Poland.

In 1942, at the age of twelve, he registered for work at the local glass factory as he was led to believe that those who worked for the German war effort would not be chosen for transportation to the death camps.

A few weeks later the transportations to the T reblinka ex termination camp began, 22, 000 out of 24, 500 Jews in Piotrkow were sent to their deaths. On the final day on transportations the trains were not filled to capacity and the SS marched into the glass factory and rounded up anybody they suspected was Jewish.

Ben was stopped, and with the help of a Pole he was working for called Andrew Janotta, he convinced the Nazis that he was ethnically Polish and not a Jew. H elfgott spent the three remaining

years of the war being moved from one labour camp to another. Although weak and skeletal in appearance he survived and was liberated from the T heresienstadt concentration camp in 1945. H is family were not so fortunate, his mother and eight year old sister were victims of a mass ex ecution in the forests near Piotrkow and his father was killed attempting to escape from a “death march” a few weeks before the end of the war.

T ogether with 700 other orphans he was sent to England and soon discovered a talent for weightlifting. H e won the UK’ s 11-stone championship in 1954 and was

lightweight champion in 1955, 1956 and 1958 . H e represented Great Britain at weightlifting in the 1956 Summer Olympics at M elbourne, Australia. H e was the captain of the British weightlifting teams at the Olympics in 1956 (M elbourne) and 1960 (R ome). In addition, he was a bronze medal winner at the 1958 British Empire and C ommonwealth Games held in Cardiff, South Wales. H elfgott also won the gold medal in the lightweight class at 1950, 1953, and 1957 M accabiah Games.

in Britain. H e helped to form ‘H olocaust Survivors the 45 Aid Society’ for H olocaust Survivors in the UK, served on the Board of Deputies of British Jews, was a trustee of H ET for 30 years, and was a member of the C ouncil of the C onference on Jewish M aterial C laims Against Germany.

Ben H elfgott said “It is an honour to have a sculpture made of me by a renowned artist such as F rances Segelman. A fantastic project she is working on and through the medium of art. I hope it will be made use of to tell my story and as a memorial to those that were murdered in the Holocaust”.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Salutes Israeli Organisation Working to Prove Lost Identities of Jewish Immigrants R abbi Lord Jonathan Sacks addressed a tribute event on behalf of the T zohar R abbinical Organization in Jerusalem describing the organization as “instilling rabbinical grace and compassion on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people.”

T he event, co-hosted by David and Sarah Sasson and M icol and R onen M evorah, highlighted the work of T zohar’ s Shorashim project which performs forensic services- primarily in the former Soviet Union- to verify the identity of immigrants to Israel whose proof of Jewish lineage is being questioned.

Without such proof, these individuals are unable to be recognized as halachic Jews in Israel and cannot be married under Israeli law.

Describing the work of T zohar and Shorashim as “an unparalleled display of the sanctification of God’s name,” Rabbi Sacks said that the organization is succeeding to

“rewrite a part of our history which has gone missing.”

According to T zohar’ s F ounder and C hair, R abbi David Stav, who also addressed the gathering, approx imately 1.2 million people arrived in Israel over the past thirty years without written documentation of their Jewish ancestry. T his is largely related to the fact that Jews in the former Soviet Union were married without a ketuba (halachic marriage certificate).

Now acclimated in Israel, many of these individuals face a major challenge when they want to marry according to Jewish law and start Jewish families.

R abbi Stav says that about 8 00, 000 people remain in this category and they are often stymied by the Israeli R abbinate who rejects their requests to be married according to halacha. “T he result of this situation is that if we don’ t succeed

T he event also served to celebrate the recent marriage of Ivgeni and Alin, a young couple born in Ukraine but raised in Israel. T hey emotionally described how when they decided to marry, they feared going to the R abbinate knowing they lacked the proper documentation but desperately wanted to start a family based on Jewish and halachic principles. Shorashim helped them secure the relevant paperwork - a process they said was performed with ultimate “compassion and love.” Alin said, “As a result of Shorashim, my family and my children are now fully recognized Jews.”

Since its creation twelve years

ago, Shorashim has successfully confirmed the Jewish identities of 40, 000 individual cases. F or every case verified, an average of five additional family members can usually be similarly verified as a result of the investigation. Once confirmed

by Shorashim, the R abbinate accepts the verification. Shorashim receives funding from private donations as well as matching support from the Israeli government.

What a turn-up for the books! Middlesex-school crowned winners of UK reading challenge!

Pupils at R osh Pinah Primary School in Edgware received £5, 000 R R P worth of books after topping the leaderboard in a competition that saw 200, 000 children across the UK try to read as much as possible over a month. young people with reading while they collectively read 100, 019, 560 minutes in schools, early years settings, homes, libraries and community groups throughout Britain.

As part of the 100 M illion M inutes initiative, ex citing events and

activities including reading power hours and a Q&A with Hollywood actor Lennie James have been taking place across the month – all with the aim to inspire children and young people to read more regularly and understand the possibilities that literacy can unlock.

F unctional illiteracy costs the UK economy £36 billion a year, with one in four working-age adults struggling to read and write, according to the latest report from the World Literacy F oundation.

R esearch from the F air Education Alliance also revealed that that up to three in five children of socio-economic disadvantage leave primary school in this country without achieving the ex pected standard of reading, with the effect on their self-confidence and job opportunities being long-lasting.

Descendants retrace steps

Eighty years since the Kindertransport saved 10, 000 children from Nazi-Europe, their descendants are retracing their steps – this time on bicycles. F orty two riders, including one of the youngest children to come on the Kindertransport, will cycle 600 miles from Berlin to London to mark the 8 0th anniversary since the arrival of the first Kindertransport train in the UK. T he Kindertransport C ommemorative R ide is organised by World Jewish R elief which spearheaded this unique rescue effort in the 1930s.

Starting at F rank M eisler’ s Kindertransport statue outside Berlin’ s F riedrichstrasse Station on Sunday 17th June the cyclists will head west covering approx imately 100 miles a day. After crossing the Dutch border they will stop at the second Kindertransport statue at the H ook of H olland before boarding the overnight ferry to H arwich, Essex . T his is where the children on the first Kindertransport train disembarked on 2nd December 1938 .

F rom H arwich they will cycle towards London Liverpool Street and arrive at the third Kindertransport statue outside the station on F riday 22nd June. Several people who

arrived as children on the Kindertransport will be waiting to welcome them.

Each rider will dedicate their effort to the incredible journey made by one of the thousands of children who were saved by the Kindertransport. Their profiles will be available on social media and include information on where they came from and about the lives they went on to live in Britain and beyond.

F or ex ample Phil H arris’ grandmother left Berlin in the summer of 1939 but her parents were unable to get visas and perished in Auschwitz.

T he documents in World Jewish R elief’ s archives show how she worked hard to establish a new life in Britain. T he night before the ride, Phil will be staying in the apartment in which his grandmother lived in Berlin so that he starts his journey the same way she did 8 0 years ago.

Phil (34) will get married two days after he finishes the ride, enabling the family that almost perished to grow further.

Dan Newton’ s grandfather came to Britain on the Kindertransport with his younger sister after their father was taken away before Kristallnacht and never returned home.

H e lived and trained with a Blacksmith in the Blackburn before joining the British Army and eventually found himself working as a translator at the Nuremburg T rials. Dan (40) is a volunteer at the National H olocaust C entre and M useum in Nottinghamshire which teaches 15, 000 British school children each year about the Kindertransport.

Paul Alex ander (8 0) was just 18 months old when his mother bravely put him into the arms of a volunteer nurse to be taken to the UK. H is father had been released from Buchenwald on condition that he left the country and had come to Britain only to be interred under the Enemy Aliens Act. H is mother managed to leave Germany four days before war broke out. Paul was one of the youngest children to arrive on the Kindertransport and was cared for in a children’ s home for 3 years before being reunited with his parents. H e moved to Israel in the 1970s and will be cycling from Berlin to London with his son Nadav and grandson Daniel (14).

Charity launches Hereditary Cancer Risk Tool to reduce ovarian cancer in the UK

Around 15% of ovarian cancer cases are linked to genetic mutations such as BR C A1, BR C A2 and Lynch Syndrome1, which increase an individual’ s likelihood of developing ovarian and other cancers.

T his equates to over 1, 000 women a year in the UK whose lives could potentially be saved.

Ovarian C ancer Action has developed its H ereditary C ancer R isk T ool to help people identify their cancer risk. T he charity believes everyone has the right to understand if their family history puts them at risk of ovarian and other cancers, as well as the risk-reducing options available.

T he tool asks a series of questions regarding an individual’ s familial history of cancer and compares answers to the national testing eligibility guidelines. It then, if necessary, clearly ex plains nex t steps should an individual choose to pursue testing on the NH S, and reminds every user of the importance of symptoms awareness regardless of their genetic status.

T he new tool makes a timely

arrival following T heresa M ay’ s ambitious announcement just a few weeks ago, calling on the NH S, Artificial Intelligence sector and health charities to work together to prevent 22, 000 deaths each year by 2033.2 T he Prime M inister focused the grand challenge on four cancers commonly diagnosed at a late stage, including ovarian cancer.

Genetic mutations can be passed down through the male or female line to future generations. T he general population has a 1 in 400 to 1 in 8 00 chance of having a BR C A gene mutation. T his increases to 1 in 40 in those with Jewish heritage.3 When primary school teacher Laura M oses, 28 , from London, found out she carried the BR C A1 gene mutation, she was able to trace it back through generations of her family history. Just one year later she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She now blogs about her experience at findingcyril.com.

Laura, said: “BR C A has come from my great-grandfather’ s side of the family. He had five sisters; two died of breast cancer and three

died of ovarian cancer. I’ m almost now a voice for those women who came before me in my family who had no idea of the mutation they carried that put them at risk of these cancers” said Laura. “There is not one minute where I question my decision to get tested. It meant I was able to get regular checks. It was very tough to find out about the mutation at age 26, but it allowed me to make choices about my body.

We have to remember that knowledge is power.”

Joanne Stanford, H ereditary C ancer Specialist at Ovarian C ancer Action and co-creator of the H ereditary C ancer R isk T ool, said: “Every time a person with a genetic mutation is diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it represents a cancer prevention failure. Along with genetic counsellors, we want to ensure individuals can make informed decisions around surveillance, preventative surgeries and its considerations, such as family planning.

C aroline T unkel, C hai C ancer C are’ s C ommunity F undraiser, has introduced a novel idea in conjunction with the World C up this year.

T he charity is encouraging people to invite their friends, family and acquaintances to their homes to watch T he World C up. T he hosts can then offer to serve a barbecue / drinks in the hope that all the guests will donate some money to C hai C ancer C are in honour of which the invitation has been issued. Alternatively, it has been suggested that some hosts may wish to donate money to the charity themselves on behalf of all their guests. C hai C ancer C are has no stipulations in this regard. It is simply very grateful to all those participating in this venture. T he proposed donation is £10 per person but again, this is completely at the discretion of the hosts and their invitees, as is the number of people who are invited.

M rs T unkel has initiated this idea in order to promote awareness of cancer, and of the charity in particular. She feels that the particular uniqueness and attraction of the venture lies in the fact that people can participate whilst in the comfort

of their own homes. She is especially proud of the fact that both men and women as well as children and older people are being involved.

She notes that all too often, charity events target a certain age group and that they mostly appeal to women. As this is a family/social occasion, she is hopeful that it will interest a wider range of people.

People can also feel free to make their own variations on the theme.

F or ex ample, they are welcome to have sweepstakes at the occasion, with guests paying for tickets naming a particular country and if that country wins, they win a small prize. All the proceeds from the tickets would be in support of C hai C ancer C are.

T he charity recognises that food can be costly and so it has collaborated with the H endon-based Kosher butcher, Basar. People who contact C hai C ancer C are to confirm that they are planning to host this event in its honour, will be able to claim a discounted price on meat bought at Basar. T he butcher is offering a special deal of pre-packed meat, suitable for barbecues, which is priced at less than £2.50 per person for all those participating in this event.

People are free to decide when they would like to host the affair and this can be any time within the period in which T he World C up is taking place. T he charity eagerly awaits photos of the individual events taking place.

C hai C ancer C are is ex cited at the prospect that this might motivate and inspire people to donate money and simultaneously, that it might give people a greater understanding and recognition of its work. Optimising prevention measures in this group of women is crucial in reducing the rate of deaths from cancer and I believe risk tools such as this will have a significant impact on public health.”

Unveiling of a Memorial to the Crew of a Handley Page V /15 00 Bomber On F riday 8 th June 2018 under a blue sky and hot early summer sunshine, Barnet dignitaries, aviation enthusiasts, and local residents gathered together in Garrick Avenue, Golders Green to mark to the ex act moment the 100th anniversary, of the crash of a WWI prototype bomber the Handley Page V/1500 B9463.

It was designed in 1917 to fly at night to Germany to bomb Berlin with the intention of shortening the war. T he aircraft had a wingspan of 126 feet, to this day the largest British bomber ever built. On its 11th flight and the 2nd of that day from C ricklewood Aerodrome, the pilot C aptain Vernon Busby took up additional crew to recreate flying conditions of a bombing mission.

but the aircraft went into an uncontrollable spin and plunged to the ground crashing in Garrick Avenue.

T he project was top secret so there were no news reports at the time

Some 20 years ago David Lang, who was apprenticed to H andley Page, still lives on the site of the former C ricklewood Aerodrome, and is a member of the H andley Page Association, began investigating the crash with the aim of pinpointing the impact. After 2 years he identified the site in Garrick Avenue.

By co-incidence 2 years ago, M alcolm King, the great nephew of James William Windebank, one of the crew onboard who died in the crash, wanted to mark the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. H is investigations on the internet led him to the H andly Page Association and David Lang’ s research.

JV N Hits the Road for V olunteers’ Week

T he Jewish Volunteering Network was out in force to mark Volunteers’ Week, a national celebration of volunteers and volunteering that occurs annually over the first seven days in June. As charities and voluntary organisations up and down the country applauded the work of those who freely give their time for the benefit of others, JVN – the UK Jewish community’ s foremost voluntary organisation – went out onto the streets to spread the message that volunteering brings with

it many benefits, and to encourage people to consider which charities they might want to assist.

T he JVN R oadshow travelled to Borehamwood R etail Park, Golders Green R oad, North F inchley’ s artsdepot and the Broadwalk Shopping C entre in Edgware. Volunteers’ Week provides the opportunity for our community to take pride in its volunteers and to showcase their incredible work.

Before he began, he said that klal yisroel’ s strength over all the generations was the power of tefilla, we are gathered here tonight to flood the heavens with our tefillos.

All gathered were visibly moved.

The Atzeres finished on a high with the recital of Tefillas hashlah and Kadish.

ABOVE AND BEYOND - A film show and meal at Ruislip Synagogue is a bit hit Over 50 people attended the film show ABOVE AND BEY OND earlier this week at R uislip Synagogue, and were treated to a delicious meal before the film was shown.

The story behind the film was of C anadian and American pilots in the second World War, together with a few British personnel as well, who helped establish the Israeli airforce.

It was a very emotive ex perience listening and watching the film

trace the beginning of the State of Israel. In 1948 the British left Palestine and as soon as they left others wanted to invade the land and take it over. T he Jews had very little and indeed no military aircraft. Ben Gurion went to the United States to plead for money in order to buy equipment, but T ruman set up an embargo of goods and arms to Palestine, which tied Israel’ s hands. Al Swimmer who was an advocate for Israel realised that aircraft were urgently needed, and he provided $5000 dollar to purchase aircraft which was a wonderful gesture.

H owever, Israel needed pilots in order to man the aircraft and preferably Jewish ones. T here were many Jewish pilots in the USA, but T ruman again discouraged them by stating that anyone who went to Israel to fly would loose their citizenship.

Despite these setbacks, Panama and C zechoslovakia helped together with Italy’ s R ome (which was in effect the Headquarters of the H aganah)and pilots came from the U.S.A and other places in order to fly the aircraft for Israel.

One can truly believe Israel is an article of faith and it was meant to be... This film was dedicated to the volunteers and kept the audience spellbound as the events unfolded.

A wonderful evening which left the audience discussing the film and

realising how much was done by how few.

Making Time For You

June 1st to 7th was #VolunteersWeek across the UK - a chance for organisations to say a huge thank you for the incredible contribution made every day by volunteers. Events up and down the country celebrated volunteering in all its different ways, and The Fed made sure to mark the occasion!

On Sunday 3rd June, The Fed’s volunteer team Time For You hosted an informal coffee morning for all Fed volunteers, to say thank you and present each of them with a “I’m a Fed Hero” badge.

Almost 50 volunteers joined in, and were reminded how crucial their work is, and what a difference they make to people’s lives.

Dalia Kaufman, The Fed’s Volunteer Recruitment Officer, gave some insight into the role of volunteers for The Fed. “To some people, the word volunteering creates an image of sharing a coffee and plate of biscuits with an older person, or taking someone shopping.

For some people, this is exactly what volunteering is - The Fed’s Time For You team have plenty of clients who require this kind of support.

But for others, volunteering runs much deeper. It can be life changing - the volunteer can be their sole lifeline to the outside world.”

“We have around 370 clients at the moment across the community,” says TFY Manager

Juliette Pearce, “all of them with different needs and requirements. We combat loneliness through befriending people – such as a widower who no longer goes out.

We provide social interaction through monthly coffee stops. We support people who need to be accompanied to hospital for treatment. We run the incredible My Voice project, working with Holocaust Survivors and Refugees and we work with the most vulnerable in our community who have literally no-one else, and no-where else, to turn to.

Many of our clients just need to see a friendly face each week, and this alone can make them feel safe.”

Discussing a client who requires very complex support, Volunteer Co-ordinator Debra Foster explains further. “A gentleman with learning disabilities, who lives locally, was virtually abandoned by his siblings as a teenager when their parents passed away.

His pride, coupled with his mental health problems, meant he trusted virtually no one, and was left on his own for many years. The other occupants of the block of flats where he lives felt he didn’t fit in, and far from helping him out they have tried to have him removed.

He was alone, frightened and upset.

After much perseverance from our team, we eventually helped him to see that a volunteer would be beneficial to him, and he now has a regular Fed volunteer who helps with sorting through the post, keeping doctor’s

Reasons To Be An Optimist At The Fed!

The Fed was the lucky benefactor of the generosity of Elton Sailing Club recently, after putting out a call to local organisations to donate items for its Seaside Garden at its Heathlands Village care home in Prestwich.

Peter Finney, Commodore of the club, responded to a letter from Fed CEO, Mark Cunningham, about the award-nominated garden, by inviting members to donate their old or unused sailing items for donation.

The Seaside Garden, a unique sensory space for residents living with dementia, was opened in July 2016, with the addition of a beach-themed sound system added in May 2017. The garden mimics a genuine seaside landscape with beach huts, an ice-cream kiosk, pier, and the sound of seagulls, waves and a steam locomotive – all designed to stimulate conversation and memories between residents and their families and carers.

Now, thanks to the sailing club, the garden proudly boasts an Optimist Dinghy and a Laser 1 sailing boat. The Optimist, first designed in 1947, has been used for generations as the go-to boat for introducing young sailors to the water, whilst the Laser 1 has been an incredibly popular design with over 200,000 registered worldwide.

Receiving the donation of the boats along with other nautical paraphernalia, Mark said, “It’s wonderful that Elton responded so generously to our call. They’ve given new life to

We’re extremely grateful.”

appointments and looking after his health, and supporting him with everyday tasks. Our volunteer, who is wonderful, deals with all of his needs sensitively and calmly.

Without us, it’s very likely he would never have a hot meal, and possibly would have ended up in hospital, long-term.”

Each of the four TFY volunteer co-ordinators supports approximately 90 families every month. They also run monthly Coffee Stops - get-togethers for people who may be isolated, as well as Volunteer Induction sessions, to prepare new volunteers for their tasks ahead joining the team of over 400 Fed volunteers. Seventy-five volunteers assist in Heathlands Village, helping with activities and supporting staff across The Fed..

them a listening ear, a relaxed and warm environment, and something to look forward to.

It’s caring and supportive - in a room full of friends.

Retaining and recruiting volunteers is crucial. Juliette continues: “Our army of volunteers are absolutely amazing and we would be lost without them - but we always need more to cope with the demand for care that reaches us. We never have enough volunteers.”

Whether it’s popping in for a chat, helping prepare a meal or assisting with paper work, Time For You are there to help people remain independent.

“No matter what life throws at them, people will always have The Fed,” says Juliette.

“We make people understand that whoever they are, they matter to someone else- they matter to us.”

OBITUARY GENA TURGEL – 1923 - 2018

BY LARA ROSENFELDER “My story, the story of a survivor, is the story that six million others cannot tell,” proclaimed the legendary Gena Turgel who died last week aged 95.

Born on 1 February 1923 in Cracow (Krakow), Poland, Gena, the youngest of nine children, grew up in a wealthy family of good repute. Her parents, Samuel and Estera Goldfinger, owned a textile business in close proximity to their home. A year prior to Hitler’s accession to power, Gena’s father died after having sustained damage to his lungs which he’d developed due to wounds inflicted upon him whilst in the Austrian Army during World War I. When the accursed Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, Gena’s family were required to surrender all their valuable belongings. Jewish and Polish schools and colleges were forced to close and as a result, Gena had to abandon her dream of studying to become a doctor.

In Autumn 1941, she and other members of her family were relocated to the ghetto in Cracow. They were jammed like sardines in a dingy ten-by-eight room and were obliged to share a kitchen and bathroom with two other families. With her expertise in sewing, Gena mended torn German uniforms in order to procure money for food which her family so desperately craved in the ghetto. Tragically though, one of her brothers was shot dead in the ghetto and another fled but was never seen again.

On 1 March 1942, Gena and the remaining members of her family were sent to Plaszow labour camp as the ghetto was destined to be liquidated. In Plaszow, Gena’s family traded any jewellery that they still possessed in return for food. Though ravenous, Gena frequently gave her food ration to her mother.

Heartbreakingly, one of Gena’s sisters was the subject of Nazi experiments which directly led to her death. Another sister was assassinated after it was discovered that she had been attempting to smuggle food into the camp. Despite the intensity of her travails, Gena’s faith in Hashem remained intact and each morning she would say Shema endorsing her belief in G-d. Poignantly, each evening, she would thank G-d that He had kept her alive to see another day.

In December 1944, it was decided that the camp was to be dissolved as increasingly more members of the SS were required at the Front. Consequently, Gena and her mother were dispatched to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The temperature was approximately 20 degrees below freezing when in the dense snow, the young girl and her compatriots travelled on foot to their dreaded destination. The relentless snow persisted throughout their arduous journey of three weeks. Often, they were compelled to continue walking overnight whilst flanked by guards and Alsatian dogs.

Moreover, they did not have clothing which adequately provided warmth and protection against the punishing climate.

As they approached Auschwitz-Birkenau and the German border, a small number of inhabitants taunted them by deliberately consuming bread in front of the starving Jewish wayfarers. Gena was later to relay that despite the depths of depravity and callousness to which some had stooped, conversely, the Jewish transients had also experienced kindness and solicitude at the hands of some non-Jewish strangers. Remarkably, Gina never lost her faith in humanity.

their clothes at the entrance of the chambers so that the garments could be disinfected. For an entire hour, she huddled together with a hundred other terrified women in the windowless room. Yet, she steadfastly clung to her belief that it was within G-d’s power to save her from death’s clutches. Miraculously, the gas chambers failed to work on that occasion and she was indeed spared.

Gena and her mother were subsequently placed on trucks to Buchenwald. Ever searching for the innate goodness in those around her, Gena was moved and inspired by the selflessness of prisoners already incarcerated in Buchenwald who shared their food with her despite their own indescribable hunger pangs.

From Buchenwald, Gena, her mother and others were ordered to walk in the freezing snow towards Bergen-Belsen, “the Finishing Camp”, where the lack of blankets and the barracks’ insufficient provision of shelter from the cold weather had taken its toll. Dysentery and typhus were also devastatingly rife.

In Auschwitz-Birkenau, Gena was later to recall that she had felt dehumanized after having been stripped of all her clothing and having had her hair shaven off. However, it was in Bergen-Belsen that she sensed that many had succumbed to utter despair.

Undeterred by the horrors which she had experienced in her young life, Gena was determined not to abandon hope. She wanted to live; she wanted to survive against the odds.

She bravely entered the camp’s hospital having averted the scrutiny of the searchlights as being caught in their gaze would have meant certain death. She offered her services and those of her mother as untrained nurses and her proposal was accepted. Gena was conscious of Hashem’s aid in enabling her

to fulfil the hospital’s requirements notwithstanding her distinct lack of formal medical training. Indeed, she nursed Anne Frank in the camp’s hospital as the fifteen year old lay dying of typhus in the beginning of 1945.

On 15 April 1945, the British arrived to liberate the camp. Touchingly, Gena married one of her liberators, the British sergeant, Norman Turgel, who was also a Jew. The story captured people’s hearts and Gena was nicknamed “The Bride of Belsen”.

Gena dedicated her life to educating others – especially young people – about the Holocaust. She was awarded an MBE for her efforts. In the words of Karen Pollock of the Holocaust Educational Trust, “Her story was difficult to hear — and difficult for her to tell, but no one who heard her speak will ever forget.”

Gena is survived by her three children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. To quote Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis – “Her legacy is our responsibility now”.

Greatest football show on the planet kicks off

BY DAVID SAFFER The 2018 Fifa World Cup kicks off today and 32 teams are ready to take part in the greatest football show on the planet in Russia.

Brazil are the bookmakers’ favorites, though only just ahead of defending champions Germany.

But the likes of Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Argentina, France, and dare we whisper it, England, are sure to have something to say about the destination of the trophy.

The draw last December has placed teams into eight groups of four with the top two qualifying for the knockout stages before the grand final on Sunday July 15.

The world’s leading players will be displaying their talent headed up by five-time Ballon D’Or winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi alongside the likes of Neymar, Mo Salah, Eden Hazard, Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta, Mesut Ozil and Antoine Griezmann.

Elsewhere, England’s Harry Kane et al will be looking to make the headlines before the most iconic trophy of all in football is lifted by one nations skipper.

Group A: Russia, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Egypt Uruguay will be expected to win this group with Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani and Barcelona’s Suarez leading the line.

Hosts Russia were Euro 2008 semi-finalists when they launched their World Cup bid but amidst rumours of unrest in the camp they are now the lowest ranked of all 32 teams.

The Egyptians rely heavily on Salah who struck five goals in six games during the last round of qualifiers, but his fitness is in doubt following his much publicised injury sustained in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The Saudi’s for their part are on a third coach since qualification when star striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi (Al-Nassr) top scored with 16 goals.

It looks like Russia will hope that home advantage tells for second spot but that is no given.

JW Group A prediction: Uruguay and Egypt Group B: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran It does not take a genius to work out which two sides will be battling out for top spot of this group.

Portugal star player Ronaldo might not be quite the force he was a season or so ago but he will be hugely motivated to win the only global medal to elude him in his glittering career.

The 32-year old Real Madrid star is the key player of a side who won Euro 2016 and will be a tough nut to crack.

Spain made headlines yesterday by appointing Fernando Hierro head coach after sacking Real Madrid-bound Julen Lopetegui for not informing his Spanish bosses of his impending post. Luckily, they have a vastly experienced squad, and although they might not quite have the phenomenal team that won the World Cup back in 2010, they are a side that could go all the way.

The Spaniards have exceptional players in the liks of ‘keeper David De Gea, stoppers Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique, midfield maestro Iniesta and Diego Costa leading the line.

So despite the coaching upheaval it’s a shoot-out between Portugal and Spain for top spot in this group.

Morocco, at their first World Cup in two decades have lots of young talent whilst Iran went unbeaten in 18 games to qualify. Though fivetime participants and vowing not just to be ‘tourists’, like Morocco, they are making up the numbers.

JW Group B prediction: Portugal and Spain Group C: France, Australia, Peru, Denmark Les Bleus has a squad packed with talented players spearheaded

Didier Deschamps though will not have such pressure this time around and his team could go a long way this time around.

This may also be the last chance for the French skipper of the ‘98 World Cup winners as his teammate then, Zinedine Zidane, could well be next boss now he has taken leave of his trophy-laden spell at Real Madrid which included three successive Champions League crowns.

Australia won the 2015 Asian Cup but are makeweights in this group though will battle for all they are worth.

Peru are back at the top table of football for the first time since 1982 and are expected to play with panache though could come up short when they take on Denmark.

The Danes are led by Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield creator with an eye for goal Christian Erikson who is now in his prime and should prove the catalyst for a last 16-spot.

JW Group C prediction: France and Denmark Group D: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria.

There is always a ‘Group of Death’ and in Russia it involves this quartet of teams headed up by 2014 runners-up Argentina.

The two-time winners are not among the front runners but with

31-year-old Messi in the side anything is possible if the little maestro is fully fit as he can turn any game on his own and will look to do so in his final hoorah at the finals.

You don’t have to remind English followers just how dangerous Iceland can be. It cost manager Roy Hodgson his job at Euro 2016, following their infamous exit to the Icelanders.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is the inspiration of a determined, dogged team who will be tough to beat as will Croatia, led by midfield schemer Luka Modric.

And with teammates Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic in the side, underestimate the Croatians at your peril, even though they only qualified through the playoffs.

Nigeria were the first African nation to qualify this time around and did it in style.

There will be plenty of talent as well with John Obi Mikel, Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses lining up.

The Super Eagles can take on most teams with confidence.

This group could turn out to be the most closely fought with the flip of coin between the sides so it will doubtless go the last games.

JW Group D prediction: Argentina and Croatia

14 JUNE 2018 Group E: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia Brazil are looking to land a sixth crown and are the bookies favourites and with the mercurial Neymar supposedly fully fit anything is possible.

The five-time winners are also desperate to avenge the 7-1 semi-final battering by Germany when they hosted the event in 2014.

Under coach Adenor Bacchi, Brazil have their sparkle back, and backed by an army of flamboyant followers who are sure to light up stadia they are set for a run at glory, though they probably have to defeat the Germans to triumph.

The Swiss qualified due to a dodgy penalty in the playoffs that broke Northern Ireland hearts, after nine successive qualification wins, but they have a crop of players from the 2009 U17 world championship team now at their peak.

Costa Rica were the darlings of 2014 when they went out to the Netherlands on penalties in the quarter finals. Real Madrid’s Kaylor Navas is their best-known player but this tournament could be a struggle given recent results.

Serbia waltzed through qualification, denying Gareth Bale’s Wales and Ireland a shot at the playoffs, with Aleksandar Mitrovic leading the line.

They may though come up short against the Swiss who will look to roll them over when they clash.

JW Group E prediction: Brazil and Switzerland Group F: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea Reigning champions Germany are an ominous threat and for many pundits the team to beat.

THE JEWISH WEEKLY of backing Brazil sees the Germans, led by the massively experienced Joachim Low and assistant Jurgen Klinsmann, second favourites.

This is a nation that understands just what it takes to get through knock out football.

Four times winners, four times runners up, four times third placed, on only four occasions since 1954 have they failed to reach the semi-finals and then they made three quarter finals.

No team has a more consistent record at the World Cup and Germany will be determined to move alongside the Brazilians at the helm of the all-time list and it’s tough to back against them.

The Germans will be in the frame and they also know how to come through a penalty shootout!

Initially standing in their way are the Mexicans who seem to shine initially then bow out at the last-16 stage as they have experienced in the last six tournaments.

A quarter final place is the target and it just might be their year to do that in the coming weeks.

Sweden though will have something to say and they are often a tough team to face but without the inspirational Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the first time since 2000 they might struggle.

And the same fate may lay in wait for 2002 semi-finalists South Korea who have been at every finals since 1986.

Qualification was far from straight forward and an early exit could be on the cards.

JW Group F prediction: Germany and Mexico Group G: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England I can’t lose with this group

because I’ve got a foot in two camps.

Of course, I’m following England and believe they are going to have a better than anticipated tournament.

I know, we’ve predicted this many times, but there is no pressure on Gareth Southgate’s exciting young squad brimming with players of potential.

I just hope Southgate gives youngsters Marcus Rashford, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trent Alexander-Arnold a chance to shine rather than players everyone expects to be in the starting XI. Be bold Southgate and a bit leftfield in your selection.

The ‘golden generation’ of Beckham, Ferdinand, Gerard, Lampard, Rooney never did it on the world stage, this squad bizarrely has a

chance to outshine them as no one expects anything.

So can the Boys of ’18 emulate the Boys of ’66 or even match the Boys of ’90 who were only a penalty shoot out from the final?

Probably not but we might just cause a surprise or two with Kane leading the line and a magic moment or two along the way.

Regarding Belgium, for over three decades they have been my ‘second’ team as my late father-inlaw was born in Antwerp, so my kids, now all in their 20s, are indelibly linked to Roberto Martinez’ side.

And this time around they have a genuine chance if they let their football do the talking.

In Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku amongst others it’s time for this talented team to deliver.

For first time participants Panana qualifying meant a ‘national’ holiday and they will be determined to enjoy the experience.

Finishing ahead of the United States was a major achievement in qualification so they have nothing to lose. In Luis Tejada, they have a striker who has hit 43 goals for their country but they should be the fall guys of this group.

Tunisia have yet to get out of the group stages of World Cup and their main target will be to defeat Panana though they may well cause some frustrating moments for their loftier opponents.

They will look to striker Youssef Msakni for goals but have a tough ask ahead.

JW Group G prediction: Belgium and England Group H: Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan

If there is such a thing as a second ‘Group of Death’ then this could be it.

There will be plenty of teams that would have been delighted to be alongside top seeded Poland led by Bayern Munich’s top striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Poles have a pretty similar line up to the one which were Euro 2016 quarterfinalists but in their record goalscorer they have a player who will have to shine in the knock out phases.

Senegal are back for the first time since stunning defending champions France in 2002 but only made it following a Fifa ruling to replay their fixture against South Africa due to match-fixing scandal involving the referee.

Senegal lost the initial clash 2-1 but won the replayed game and went on to qualify.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane is the mainstay of this side and will need to replicate his astonishing form for the Reds for Senegal to progress.

Colombia were the last South American team to qualify and aim to replicate their 2014 quarter final appearance.

Another Bayern Munich star, James Roriguez, got global attention with his incredible strike against Uruguay last time. He is the Uruguayans key player and will need to be firing for his team to progress.

Japan topped their group in qualifying and though lacking star players will be organised and demonstrate incredible work rate, which will be needed in what could be a closely fought group.

The crazy world of World Cup ’66 memorabilia

No World Cup can go by without a nod to the Boys of ‘66.

Sadly, each four-year cycle sees the passing of members of that iconic team.

Ray Wilson’s death last month means that three of the side are no longer with us and other teammates are struggling healthwise.

Their legacy though is assured and for memorabilia collectors acquiring items from the tournament is getting more and more expensive.

The most highly sought items are those belonging to the players who played in the final.

In terms of their shirts it’s not been documented what Moore’s was worth but hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst sold his final shirt for £91,750 in 2001 although it would likely achieve far more now.

A winners’ medal however is the most highly valued as only 11 were awarded after the final whistle.

Nobby Stiles sold his medal for a record £188,200 in 2010, eclipsing Alan Ball who attained £164,800

five years earlier.

Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst’s were purchased by West Ham United for £150,000 a few years prior.

Hammers team mate Martin Peters sold his medal for a reported similar figure which is also on display at the club museum.

Gordon Banks sold his medal at auction for £124,750 in 2001, whilst George Cohenand Ray Wilson both received a reported £80,000 for their memento in 1998 and 2002.

Roger Hunt, Jack Charlton and brother Bobby Charlton still own their medals.

There are masses of signed replica shirts and photographs of England’s winning team available to buy. But original ephemera in good condition is getting harder to buy.

Fans were able to purchase a plethora of ‘World Cup Willie’ items from rosettes, to key rings, pens, badges, mugs, t-shirts and associated products that have become collectable.

Newspapers of the era are easy to acquire thanks to the wonders of eBay.

A cuddly toy of the ’66 mascot was worth £1 in today’s money.

Now in good condition it fetches approaching £200.

A commemorative ashtray has a selling price of well in excess of £100 on eBay. World Cup ice buckets shaped like footballs were made for the tournament. Worth a tenner at the time, they fetch up to £150, the same figure will purchase a money box or toffee tin holder.

There were a number of first day covers, one fully signed item by all 11 players signatures can command over £1,000, more with Sir Alf Ramsey and a far greater price with all 22 squad players.

And if you were among the 90,000-strong crowd on July 30 when England beat West Germany 4-2 and kept your ticket stub it could be worth up to £150 though prices have dipped a bit.

However, a full set of tickets from the competition’s 32 games can reportedly attain £3,000 but the right condition is paramount.

Meanwhile, a programme from the momentous final, bought for the equivalent of 50p, is now sold on eBay for up to £150 though there are forgeries. In fact, websites are dedicated to this issue.

The outer section of an original programme was printed before the final and inner section once the finalists were known with details of results up to the semi-finals.

Because it was printed in two sections there is a discrepancy in paper quality and appearance.

If you look sideways on, pages of the central section are slightly darker than outer pages.

This is an identifying point but there are examples of the same paper, which makes sense as paper must have been over from the first print run.

Other key signs are the original weighs around 130 grammes, significantly more than early reprints, the ‘England v West Germany’ writing on the cover has a blue tinge, the cigarette advert on the inside page has two shades on the Player’s No. 6 advert and Cadette advert on back cover is a red tinge.

The first reprint after the final catches people out but clues are it weighs 96 grammes and the

‘England v West Germany’ writing on the cover is black. A 1970 reprint is easy to spot as the cover has a lilac tinge, cigarette adverts have a different tinge and it weighs 122 grammes.

There are other versions so you have been warned!

Finally, every football-mad kid growing up liked swapping football stickers of players.

But this was a year before FKS brought out the first ‘sticker’ album of First Division (pre Premier League) players in 1967/68.

The 1966 World Cup stars album was the only album published in the UK, good examples are tough to find and sells for up to £70.

The ‘66 album is a set of colour pictures, not stickers, it is not marked as FKS but is clearly the precursor to the FKS sticker sets.

The image on the front of the album is the same as the FKS Munich ‘74 and FKS ‘78 Argentina World Cup albums.

There are two editions of the album. The first has the inside back page with spaces for you to fill in the results of matches, a second edition after the tournament has results printed.

Will prices go up, probably, if you follow Scotland, amazingly a Panini Munich ’74 ‘sticker’ version sold recently for £270 on eBay. World Cup memorabilia and ephemera certainly is a crazy market.

BY DAVID SAFFER So the World Cup has arrived but who will be victorious, which players will make headlines and how will England far.

Here is a snapshot from football followers as the big kick off takes place.

Tottenham Hotspur fan Andrew Charles thinks it will be very exciting as six or so top teams are all capable of winning the tournament which is unusual.

“The strongest team and squad is France and so I will go with them to win it,” he said. “Their key players are Griezmann and Mbappe.

“As for England, they will make it to the quarter finals but will lose to Germany after finishing second in our group.

“Star players are going to impress but it’s all too easy to name Neymar, Messi et al. So watch out for German striker Timo Werner who could make a big name for himself at the tournament. Also look out for Portuguese striker Guedes, Forsberg for Sweden and Mertens for Belgium.”

As for Andrew’s fiancé, Jade, she thinks Argentina will win the World Cup because of Messi and their attacking prowess.

“The Argentinian genius, alongside England’s Harry Kane will be the stars of the tournament in Russia,” she commented.

“England will get to the quarters thanks in largely to the efforts of their skipper Kane.”

As for Leodensian Howard Dapin his team to win are also France.

“They have unbelievable attacking flair in their side with Mbappe, Griezmann, Dembele, Pogba and Giroud,” he said.

“There is also solidity with Kante in front of the back four. Exciting wingbacks, Mendy and Sidebe. The potential in that side is huge.

“The star player will be Mbappe who has too much pace for most defences.

“Elsewhere, England will creep into the last eight and will be defeated by one of the four favourites.

“Dark horses for the tournament Peru who go into the tournament 14 games unbeaten, a good strong, together team.”

New Yorker Jon Stern has a different perspective.

He noted, “Living in the States, in terms of the World Cup as we never made it I’ll be cheering for Argentina, Iceland, all the CONCACAF teams, and of course England.

“And I’m delighted the US gets the Cup for 2026!”

Manchester-born Danny Cohen is delighted the World Cup is here.

“There is something about this tournament that marks it out as different from previous ones.

‘Now that outright favourites Brazil and Germany are set to meet,

Spain, Portugal or another team could sneak up unnoticed.

“The obvious names are in the frame but I think Ronaldo is going to be on fire this time around. Portugal know how to win but the great man got injured in the Euro ‘16 final so will be desperate to impress.

“England, well I think they will do okay then exit when the big boys come along. Going forward, we look dangerous but the defence worries me and I think our ‘keeper will get found out.”

Londoner Avi Garson is likewise looking ahead to the games.

“Am I looking forward to the World Cup? Absolutely! Who isn’t!

“My money is on France. The quality and pace of the French squad is frightening. Some of the names they’ve left out is beyond ridiculous. They reached the final in the last big tournament, I think they can go one better.

“England doesn’t stand a chance of winning the World Cup. If they reach the quarters it would be a success.

“The semi’s would be an incredible feat but I think England will reach the quarter final.”

Rafi Addlestone, originally from Leeds noted: “I’m looking forward of course to a festival of football, although sadly its slightly ruined by the stench of Fifa led corruption.

“On the field though is what counts, Brazil are favourites and I

believe they will come out on top.

“The star player for me this time around will be Griezmann for France.

“As for England, we’ll get to a valiant quarterfinal before defeat for the young Lions.”

Jamie McLeod believes Spain will win the tournament.

He explained, “They have the best ‘keeper in the business in de Gea, the exceptional Ramos in defence, both flair and experience in midfield and up top, and a squad littered with winners.

“For me the star players at this World Cup will see young forwards shine. Werner, Mbappe and Neymar will steal the show.

“I expect this to be England’s strongest tournament showing for some time. The youth, pace and energy in the team is definite cause

for optimism, but nevertheless, a crushing quarter-final defeat to a rejuvenated Brazil side awaits.”

Jonathan Bonn hails from South Africa and is tuned in to his country’s three-match Test series against Eddie Jones’ England but he will also be taking in the World Cup. “I’m more of a rugby union fan so I’m watching the current series intently and we had a thrilling win in the first Test,” he said.

“But that will not stop me tuning into the football World Cup. “I’m not sure who will win, but I’m going for England as a dark horse.

“Everyone has a chance and who knows, they might surprise a few people.”

Halcyon days - When Israel joined football’s elite

When the World Cup comes around it always brings a nostalgic look back at days gone by and for those of a certain generation you cannot help but recall the 1970 World Cup in Mexico when Pele was in his prime as Brazil won The Jules Rimet Trophy with scintillating attacking football.

The Boys of ’66 had lost their crown but the tournament included an iconic moment when keeper Gordon Banks made a stunning save from Pele in Guadalajara during the group stages.

Pele took the plaudits but as notable for Jewish fans was Israel making their sole appearance to date.

Mordechai Spiegler is a legendary figure decades on from his finest hour as captain of the national team when he scored Israel’s sole goal of the tournament.

Spiegler made 385 appearances for FC Maccabi Netanya and won 83 caps.

Israel’s leading goal-scorer with 33 goals, he was born in the Ural mountain region of Russia in August 1944.

The Spiegler family arrived in Israel shortly after Israel’s independence, eventually settling in Netanya where Yitzhak Schneor, coach of his hometown club, spotted his talent.

Spiegler made his first team debut in a First Division game against Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1961 and during his army service continued to progress as a footballer.

Resuming his playing career at Netanya, by the end of ‘60s he was a regular for the national team.

Following his debut against South Vietnam in a Tokyo Olympics qualifier, Spiegler helped Israel win the Asian Cup in 1964.

At the 1968 Mexico Olympics, Israel reached the quarterfinals then reached the World Cup finals following a tough play off final versus Australia.

Taking a 1-0 advantage to Sydney, Spiegler scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 aggregate triumph. His 78th minute left foot strike was the most important of his international career.

“Whenever I watch back the goal in Australia to take us to the World Cup, I’m still afraid the keeper will stop the ball!” he quipped.

“I am aware all these years later though what a big moment it was for the country and I’m proud I scored it.”

Part timers Israel took on former World Cup winners Uruguay and Italy, and former finalists Sweden following the draw. Group B fixtures were played in Puebla and Toluca.

Clear underdogs, Israel lost 2-0 to Uruguay then faced Sweden at the Estadio Luis Dosal in Toluca.

Digging deep, a Spiegler equaliser earned a hard fought draw in a feisty affair.

Israel required a victory over ultra-defensive Italy to advance into the quarterfinals.

Following a creditable goalless draw, Israel departed from Mexico with an enhanced reputation.

“Qualifying for a World Cup finals was our greatest achievement,” Mordechai recalled.

“The Israeli media followed every move of the team, there were many interviews and it was a big football festival. For a small country like ourselves to make it was massive.

“In Israel, fans thought we’d be beaten in every game but I was optimistic. My view was we are here, this is the stage where if you

are really good enough then show the world.

“Our national team was more like a club team. We were together around eight weeks for the tournament but far more during the year. The squad was settled but if someone was excellent in league games then they came in.

“We played games in preparation for Mexico and could fit any system, switching between 4-3-3, 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.

“Key players included Giora Spiegel, Yitzhak Vissoker, Shmuel Rosenthal and Yeshoshua Feigenbaum.”

Looking back on the matches, he recalled: “We had a strong side but it was a hard mission and the first match was the toughest because Uruguay outplayed us though we did our best but were not good enough.

“Sweden was a tight game, they led and after my equaliser both teams had chances.

“Lots of people have asked about my goal,

but when you start to play at an early age and kick hundreds of balls it’s another one though it was a massive occasion. I hit the ball and it went straight in, a great moment, but you don’t think it’s a historic at the time.

“I didn’t think it would be Israel’s last to this day. You can’t think negative, when someone tells me it won’t ever happen again for Israel, I say, why not, it’s a game so it’s possible.

“Italy had big name players like Mazzola, Rivera, Domenghini, Riva and Fachetti.

Drawing was a good result for us.

“Uruguay made the semi finals and Italy qualified to the final. Both lost to Brazil.”

Spiegler stayed until the final and commentated for Israel’s Channel 1.

“The match is still talked about today, especially the fourth goal by Carlos Alberto,” he recalled.

“Goals are scored all over the world every day, we see individual, fantastic goals but this one is considered special because it was at the right place and at the right moment of a World Cup final.

“The teamwork made the goal with four or five wonderful passes before Pele served Alberto. The way Brazil played was more like dancing than playing football.”

Returning to Israel, Spiegler led Netanya to further honours, played for Paris St Germain and New York Cosmos, where he partnered Pele in attack, prior to managerial posts including a spell at Netanya when he enjoyed his greatest success winning the clubs’ fifth title.

Spiegler went into business, has worked on television, gives inspirational speeches and is an Ambassador for the IFA promoting Israel’s case to the world.

But his footballing legend endures, mainly due to the summer of ’70 when Israel rubbed shoulders with the elite of the sport.

Leonard Dear Leonard Harvard University professor Ruth Wise wrote these wise words in The Wall Street Journal back in 2003: “Unfortunately, the Arab war against Israel is no more a territorial conflict than was al Qaeda’s strike against the World Trade Centre, and it can no more be resolved by the ‘road map’ than anti-Americanism could be appeased by ceding part of the U.S. to an Islamist enclave. From the moment in 1947 when Jewish leaders accepted and Arab rulers rejected the U.N. partition plan of Palestine, the Arab-Israeli conflict bore no further likeness to conven-

tional territorial struggles. Arab rulers defied the U.N. charter by denying the legitimacy of a member state. Arab countries refused to acknowledge the existence of a single Jewish land. Arab rulers did not object to Israel because it rendered the Palestinians homeless. Rather, they ensured that the Palestinians should remain homeless so that they could organize their politics around opposition to Israel.

At any point during the past many decades, Arab governments could have helped the Palestinian Arabs settle down to a decent life. They could have created the infrastructure of an autonomous Palestine on the West Bank of the Jordan and the Gaza territory that Egypt controlled until 1967, or encouraged the resettlement of Palestinians in Jordan, which constitutes the lion’s share of the original mandate of Palestine.

Biblical connection to the land.

David Ben Gurion, for example, had an appreciation of the necessity of anchoring a modern, even secular, Israeli state in biblical and Jewish tradition.

Yet, tragically, this has changed dramatically in recent years. You will rarely, if ever, hear an Israeli leader state the truest and most moral justification for a Jewish presence in the Holy Land: G-d’s gift to the Jewish people. I am sure our leaders are trying to do the best for their country, but the practical consequences of this policy are counterproductive.

The Arabs are protesting against Israel, saying, “You have annexed our land; you are building settlements on our soil; you are intruding into our territories.”

And Israel routinely responds: “Yes, you have the right to create on these territories a Palestinian state, but we have a right for self-defence.”

The world, we know, has embraced the Arab point of view.

Condemnation of Israel as an apartheid state has become the norm. Is this pure anti-Semitism?

I do not think so.

The world is sympathetic to the Arab propaganda against Israel, because Israel itself has embraced the Arab version of “truth.” Israel never refuted the core Arab claim that the territories captured in the 1967 war constitute ancient Palestinian land. Israel only states, that notwithstanding the validity of the Arab claim, she has a right for self-defence.

So the world says: “OK, so defend yourself in your territories, not in theirs.”

This, I believe, remains Israel’s profoundest diplomatic and strategic error. In many of its actions, it treats the 1967 territories as though they belonged to Israel; yet in its words, Israel agrees to the Arab claim that this is Palestinian land. So the world is confused: The Arab position is clear to all; the Israeli position is shrouded in mystery. Do they believe this land belongs to them or not? If yes, let them stop saying that they consent to create a Palestinian State there.

If not, why do they still maintain a presence there?

The Arabs are not confused.

Israel is. And when Jews are confused about who they are and what they believe in, the world resents them. “You are the nation who heard G-d speak at Sinai; if you guys can’t speak moral truth, you

must be up to something really devilish.”

As long as the status of the entire country remains ambiguous, the terror campaign against Israel will, Heaven forbid, continue. The Arabs will view Israel’s moral and political ambiguity as a green-light to proceed with their aspiration to “liberate all of Palestine from the Zionist entity.”

And the world will sympathize with this craving for statehood and freedom. Israel must stand up and put an end to the ambivalence around Jewish ownership of the land. Israel must state clearly that “There will be no more negotiations on even a single inch of the land of Israel. We have attempted to negotiate land for peace with our neighbours; we have offered them 98 percent of the territories and an independent state side-byside with our state. Yet they have reciprocated by sending suicide bombers to our pizza shops, cafés, supermarkets, schools, and private homes. One cannot give land to leaders who teach their youngsters the sacredness of martyrdom.

Israel should allow anybody who wishes to depart for another country to do so. There are 22 Arab countries in the Middle East, and one tiny Jewish country. Israel must reclaim its permanent sovereignty over all of the territories and crush every vestige of terror.

Jews should be encouraged to live in their entire homeland. This will save not only countless Jewish lives, but also scores of Arab lives.

It will once and for all purge the region from continuous bloodshed and terror.

This is not occupied territory. It is the land of Israel, given by G-d to the Jewish people. Let’s set the record clear: This is Jewish land, not Arab land. Let all Jews and people of moral standing unite and encourage Israel to bring life and peace to all good people in the region, Jew and Arab alike.

Datan and Aviram remain defiant. Moshe announces that if Korach and his household die a normal death, then he, Moshe, is not God’s rightful appointee. Yet if the ground swallows them up miraculously, then Moshe’s leadership is legitimate. As Moshe finishes speaking, the ground opens up, consuming Korach, some of his followers and all of their property. A fire then consumes Korach’s 250 main disciples. Moshe commands Aharon’s son Elazar to gather in the

Parshat Korach In this weeks Parshah we read about a sad but important story that occurred while the Jewish people were in the desert.

Some jealous, evil people tried to challenge Moshe’s leadership, and the disastrous results taught all the Jews an important lesson.

Korach, after whom the Parshah is named, is from the tribe of Levi, so he has the honour of helping the Kohanim and carrying the parts of the Mishkan while traveling. But for him this isn’t enough; he is jealous of Aaron because he wants to be a a Kohen too. So he gets a bunch of people to be on his side—Dathan and Aviram, the usual troublemakers, On, the son of Peleth, and two-hundred and fifty others— and goes to complain to Moshe and Aaron, saying. “Why should you two be the leader and the Kohan? Isn’t every Jew special? Why do you think you’re better than everybody else?”

In order to prove that they really are worthy of being Kohanim, Korach and his men prepare an offering of Ketoret to bring in the Mishkan. Aaron also prepares an offering, and they all stand outside the Mishkan holding their pans. Suddenly, the earth opens and swallows those rebelling against Moshe. Korach, Dathan, and Aviram and all the 250 men who are trying to bring a ketoret are consumed by a fire and are swallowed up by the ground.

All of the Jews watch the scene, and it is clear to everybody that Moshe is the true leader, appointed by G-d, and that only a Kohenis allowed to bring the ketoret offering. But then some of the still Jews complain, so a plague begins to spread. Aaron rushes to bring a ketoret offering as an atonement for the people and the plague stops.

G-d makes one more miracle to prove that Aaron’s family are the only true Kohanim. Aaron’s staff miraculously starts growing almonds.

When everyone sees the staff suddenly sprouting, it is clear that Aaron is the Kohen chosen by G-d.

INVISIBLE COOKIE DOUGH ICE POPS Ingredients: • • • • •

1 1/4 cups soy milk (any milk of choice) 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons mini semisweet chocolate chips

Method: 1. In a microwave safe bowl microwave milk for 30 seconds or until it is warm to the touch. Add the brown sugar and salt and stir until they dissolve, then add the vanilla.

2. Place 1/2 tablespoon chocolate chips in the bottom of each of four 1/3-cup ice-pop molds or small paper cups. Top with mixture. Insert Popsicle sticks and place in freezer. Freeze until solid, at least 3 hours.

3. To release pops run molds under warm water for 20 seconds or so, the Cookie Dough Ice Pops should slide right out.

Hamish has an idea for how they can all escape, it involves the princess fooling the king into thinking he has the wrong girl. But when she reaches the throne room, her prime minister is standing next to him….

A thousand thoughts raced through her mind.

Fear. Disgust. Betrayal. Anger. They all vied for attention, yelling and screaming and eclipsing each other until they became a raging, indistinguishable mass, a thunder storm that threatened to drown her. Enough, she scolded herself. The fact he was here made the whole thing dangerous enough. Now… the game was raised and so she must rise to the occasion too.

Her brother was depending on her. His men were depending on her. The whole kingdom depended on her. Even Hamish, whom she had grown mildly fond of, though she could scarcely admit this even to herself, was depending on her. Besides, she was a princess, princesses don’t get flustered.

She forced her face into incomprehension.

“My lord? I don’t understand?”

Before the king could even begin to answer, her minister broke in. Vector sneered at her, “what’s happened here is that I have successfully out thought you. You thought that you, the royals were so high and mighty, so wise and discerning.” He raised the pitch in his voice. “So noble, the people, the people, oh the people.” He broke off and gave her a look of malevolent loathing.

“Those petty oaths you care so much

about, they always came first. Pheasants.”

He spat “ You never really understand the way that the world works. Your aspirations were so…simple. You’re pathetic, stagnating in your perceived saintliness. You don’t deserve power.”

And you do?! She restrained herself, held the comment back and used her anger to forge strength. If she responded now, the game was up.

“I, I don’t understand?” She forced a nervous giggle. “I’m just a simple town girl, I don’t know of what you speak.”

“A simple girl who speaks so well? With such poise and grace? Simple, my foot.”

“Is what?” “ What are you babbling about?”

“Is what?” He stared at her. She repeated.

“It is what?”

“What is what?” “what what is what what.”

“What!?”

“Which one?”

“SILENCE! What is this nonsense!?” He roared. The king frowned at this lack of gentility, though he made no comment. The princess tried not to laugh. Or sneer.

“Your foot is what?”

“What about my foot?!” He snapped impatiently. She was ruining his monologue.

Excellent.

The King motioned to Vector who turned to him petulantly. “my Lord?” He spoke so morosely that the princess almost smiled, now she had him.

“Are you sure she is the correct girl? One

can hardly trust pirates, especially when they bring in a waif that looks like… that.”

The princess bristled but she had to admit he was right. Her hair was still green and she was still covered in the sauce that the cannibals had poured all over her. And her dress was in rags because Hamish had made roped out of the bottom of it. Not to mention the fact that she hadn’t eaten or slept properly for almost 5 weeks. She was almost grateful for it. Almost.

It might save her life, but to not live or to live in ignominy was a hard choice to make.

Vector was whispering furiously at the king who suddenly stiffened and said coldly, “I do not care for your tone.” The ice in impreshis voice was impres sive. Any second now Vector’s ego and lust for power was going to push him off the edge. He was so busy reaching for the stars that he didn’t even realise that he was about to fall off the cliff.

Vector snarled at the king, “I know the girl! It was my kingdom. You know nothing!

Without me your whole campaign would never have a had a chance at success.” He was breathing heavily, his fists clenched, all semblance of decorum stripped. It was scary to see the real face of the man wo had seemed such a loyal servant for so many years.

“You have overstepped your mark.”

“My mark?! It is you who don’t know your place you fool!” Vector stepped back in horror as the room stilled into a deathly

silence. “No, no, m, my Lord.. I, I, I, I,I did not, I didn’t, my lord, oh please, my lord…”

He began to babble and stutter but the guards were almost upon him. He turned and fell straight into their grasp. She heard hi scream all the way until the abrupt end. The king then turned to another servant. “Get her out of my sight! And the boy in the dungeons too. And fetch me that pirate.”

As she fell down the steps of the palace( why did they have to be so cliché?) the princess smiled. Round one – over. Now for the next stage.

Parshat Korach

In a nutshell Korach incites a mutiny challenging Moshe’s leadership and the granting of the kehunah (priesthood) to Aaron. He is accompanied by Moshe’s inveterate foes, Dathan and Aviram. Joining them are 250 distinguished members of the community, who offer the ketoret (incense) to prove their worthiness for the priesthood. The earth opens up and swallows the mutineers, and a fire consumes the ketoret-offerers.

A subsequent plague is stopped by Aaron’s offering of ketoret. Aaron’s staff miraculously blossoms and brings forth almonds, to prove that his designation as high priest is divinely ordained.

G-d commands that a terumah (“uplifting”) from each crop of grain, wine and oil, as well as all firstborn sheep and cattle, and other specified gifts, be given to the kohanim (priests).

The Haftarah relays that the prophet, Samuel, a descendant of Korach, assembled the people in Gilgal to publicly pronounce Saul as King.

In this week’s parsha, Avi, Korach rebelled against Moshe Rabbeinu, our teacher Moses. He made false accusations. He started an unjustified argument. He mocked Moshe Rabbeinu.

He refused any attempts to make peace. He turned many people against their beloved leader.

Those are all pretty terrible things, Mom. He really deserved punishment for them.

He certainly did, Avi, and he got it.

Who gave it to him? Moshe Rabbeinu?

Not at all, Avi. Moshe Rabbeinu tried to make peace with him.

Moshe went to Korach privately, in order to avoid embarrassing him. Moshe answered all of Korach’s accusations and patiently explained the reasons for his actions. However, all of his attempts failed.

What happened next, Mom? Did he punish him?

No, Avi. That was not his job. That was G-d’s job. Moshe Rabbeinu’s job was to try to make peace with Korach. He tried to correct Korach’s mistakes and set him on the straight path. He tried to help Korach in every possible way. However, nothing succeeded. There was no choice but to punish him.

Right, Mom. Some people deserve punishment.

Yes, Avi. However, that is not our job. It is G-d’s job. He delivers the reward and punishment. G-d punished Korach and all of his followers.

Exactly, Avi. Mom, sometimes you and Dad punish me. You say that you are only doing it to teach me a lesson. What is the difference?

We are your parents, Avi. We have a mitzvah to educate you properly. Sometimes, punishment is a necessary part of education. Teachers are also trying to help you when they punish you. That is their job. But, it is not your job.

But it is so unfair Mom! How can he get away with that? How can that boy cheat and not pay for it?

Avi, nothing is unfair. G-d is running the world. No one gets away with anything. We all have faith in G-d. He does not allow any wrong deed to go unpunished. Punishment is His job. This is a very important lesson, Avi. What you are saying Mom, is that we have to do our job, and leave G-d to do His job.

You’ve got it. This rule will bring you much happiness and peace of mind. You will never get upset like you did today. You will never be trying to do G-d’s job.

Mom, from now on I am going to change. I am going to stop trying to do other people’s jobs and just concentrate on doing my job as well as I can. Whenever I feel myself wanting to take revenge or teach the other person a lesson, I am going to say to myself, “It’s not my job.”

SINGING HELPS SIBERIAN HUSKY REUNITE WITH OWNER Pet owners usually have no choice but to implant their cats or dogs with microchips to help identify the animals if they get lost or decide to escape.

However, one Siberian Husky in Israel did not need the modern technology — he could sing his way home!

The chain of events began about three weeks ago when Israeli police officers stumbled upon a malnourished dog at Tel Sheva, an archaeological site outside of the city of Beersheba in southern Israel After bringing him to the station and administering some first aid, they looked through their records to see if anybody had reported a missing husky.

Sure enough, they found one filed by a Beersheba resident that matched the dog they had found. However, instead of rushing over to the station, the owner asked the officers to help him identify the pooch by playing him the soundtracks to two popular children’s songs, “Shemesh” and “Arthur.”

To the astonishment of the

police, upon hearing the tune for “Shemesh,” the husky perked up and began “singing” in unison.

While it may have sounded more like howling to the bystanders, the owner, who was listening on the phone, instantly recognized the pooch’s lovely voice and rushed over. “I cried the whole way here,” the man said while embracing his lost pet. “You poor thing,” he said, adding to the officers: “Thank you, thank you so much.”

Though this may be the first dog to be identified by its singing, the skill is not uncommon among vocal breeds like huskies and hounds.

Experts say the dogs croon for a variety of reasons and believe that the frequency depends on the owner’s reaction. The more enthusiastic he/she is, the more likely the pooch will try to mimic the music. So, be sure to see if you can teach and encourage your dog to sing – in addition to keeping you entertained, the skill may come in handy some day!

The World Surf League (WSL) made the announcement at the Big Wave Awards held in Santa Monica on April 28, 2018. The WSL determined that Koxa’s wave measured an astounding 80 feet, surpassing the 78-foot wave record set by American Garrett McNamara in 2011. In addition to the world record, Koxa was also bestowed with the Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave Award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize and is awarded annually to a surfer who catches the biggest waves

by any means — paddling into it or being towed by a jet ski.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that in 2014, Koxa nearly lost his life while attempting to ride a big wave in Portugal.

When accepting the honor, the emotional athlete said, “I’ve tried to surf big waves all my life and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost died at Nazaré. Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically.

“Now, I’m just so happy and this is the best day of my life.

Thank you to WSL, it’s a dream come true.”

According to the Guinness

World Records, the record for the largest wave surfed has inched up dramatically since 2004, when American surfer Pete Cabrinha took the honor for riding a 70-foot wave off Maui, Hawaii’s North Shore. In 2008, fellow American Mike Parsons surpassed the achievement by surfing a 77-foot monster off the Southern California coast. It took three years for McNamara to best that with a 78-foot giant in 2011, and almost seven more for Koxa to outdo that! While only time will tell if any surfer will be able to ride a bigger wave, it sure will not be for lack of trying!

STUDY SUGGESTS THE HUMAN BRAIN STOPS MAKING NEW CELLS AT AGE 13 The scientists began by identifying young neurons, characterized by their long and slender shapes, and then used fluorescent antibodies to detect proteins specific to cells at different stages of maturity. They found that while there were a lot of young neurons in the brain tissue at birth, the production of new hippocampal neurons slowed down substantially by age 7 and was nonexistent by age 13. Dr. Mercedes Paredes, an assistant professor of neurology at UCSF and one of the study’s leaders, says, “We went into this work thinking we were going to find evidence of neurogenesis because other groups did. So we

were actually surprised when we didn’t see any evidence of it in our adult samples.” Given that similar observations have been made in aquatic mammals like dolphins and whales, the researchers think the lack of regeneration could be a hallmark of complex brains.

However, not everyone agrees with the results of the study, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Among them is Rusty Gave, interim director of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, whose 1998 study concluded new neurons are continually being formed in the hippocampus of adult humans.

Don’t let the rot set in

The purpose of this article is to highlight some of the problems associated with dampness to houses and in particular rot to timbers so that more attention is given to this important area which is often ignored and can have far reaching and devastating consequences if neglected. I would also like to highlight the importance of having a Building Survey carried out prior to purchasing a property.

Timber decay My family often make fun of me and say I only get excited about cracks and rot. This is completely untrue of course as it is only rot!

There are two types of rot, namely wet rot and dry rot. It is important to distinguish between the two types. Wet rot, as the name implies, is caused by excessive amounts of moisture in contact with timber surfaces. Classic examples would be an external timber window sill which has become bare of paint which has allowed water to penetrate and results in decay of the timber or perhaps a leaking waste under a bath which causes rot to timber floor boards and joists. If left and the bath is loaded with water the floor could in theory collapse!

Dry rot on the other hand is not as the name implies a result of dry conditions but rather less moisture (30% moisture content within the timber) and normally warmer conditions which allow for the growth of the dry rot fungus known as Serpula Lacrymans. This type of rot often occurs where moisture levels may have been high due to a leak and as the source of the leak is abated and areas dry out conditions can become favourable for the dry rot to develop. It is for this reason that damp affected areas should be properly ventilated or a dehumidifier fitted following abatement of any leak. Controlled drying and monitoring of damp levels may therefore be required.

Timbers in proximity to damp affected brickwork may also become vulnerable to dry rot and in particular floor joist ends which are in contact with damp brickwork may become adversely affected by both wet rot and dry rot.

One of the reasons why dry rot has such a fearsome reputation is that it may remain undetected for some time within the structure and may be only apparent as slight rippling of the timber or paint finishes on skirting boards. This is something that an experienced surveyor should notice and so investigate further including checking for dampness using a moisture meter and possibly exposing areas. The type of rot will also have to be identified. Dry rot will produce filaments of various thicknesses ranging from white to yellow to brown reminiscent of Soraas that affected buildings in biblical times. It will also produce fruiting bodies which produce millions of spores searching for new timber to settle and feast on if the conditions are

right. The dry rot fungus will eat away at the timber and eventually turn it into dust The dry rot spreads by fine filaments known as mycelium which can even spread into brickwork and plaster searching out further timber on which to feed upon. It is for this reason that a popular method of eradication of dry rot includes removal of affected plaster and treatment of brickwork behind with an anti-fungal spray and then reinstatement of the plaster. This can be quite invasive, destructive and costly particularly if ceilings with ornate cornicing are involved. Damp proof companies will often insist on removal of plaster and extensive treatment with fungicidal sprays and irrigation of brickwork, however it may not always be necessary as abating the source of dampness with controlled drying will ensure that the dry rot does not spread or continue to cause decay. An independent surveyor should be able to assess and advise regarding the extent of remedial works required. It should be noted that the chemical treatments are toxic and care should be taken to protect occupants and even pets such as fish that are highly sensitive to these chemicals. Any structural timbers will also have to be checked to ensure they have retained their integrity.

It is therefore important to establish the cause of the dampness which has generated the outbreak of dry rot as this is the key to successful eradication and to help determine the correct remedial works and treatment.

It may also be appropriate to refer the matter of rot infestation to your building insurers.

The insurers will not normally cover the cost of remedial works to abate the leaks such as to repair a leaking pipe but depending on the policy wording may cover the cost of resultant rot remedial works which may be extensive. A surveyor may be able to help with such a claim.

A further and less obvious source of dampness may be problems with condensation.

This really deserves a separate article.

What is not commonly realised is that condensation below timber ground floors can build up and cause problems with what appears to be rising damp but is not. A surveyor should be able to identify this.

There can also be a build up of condensation within the void of flat roofs which have not been correctly insulated and ventilated and similar rot problems can result.

It can be seen that the source of dampness may not be immediately apparent and requires careful investigation and analysis.

Opening up works or use of an endoscope may also be required to check for sources of damp and possible rot. Some times a trial and error approach and water testing is required to identify the cause of the damp.

Left unchecked rot can be devastating.

Building Surveys I have referred to Building Surveys in this article and would like to briefly expand on this subject. A Building Survey involves an inspection of a property followed by a comprehensive and detailed report on its condition and is usually carried out prior to a purchase. The type of defects which would be highlighted would include dampness and rot. The report should provide the prospective purchaser with the piece of mind they will need before proceeding with what is likely to be the biggest investment of their lives Having said this I am amazed that so many people proceed to purchase a property without a Building Survey perhaps just relying on the bank valuation. This is not very prudent as issues are often highlighted which will be costly to remedy and the price of the property may be renegotiated on the basis of the report saving the purchaser unforeseen costs and aggravation.

Sources of Dampness The causes of dampness may be obvious such as a leaking gutter or rainwater pipes, blocked and overflowing gutters and hoppers and leaking roofs. Less obvious causes of dampness maybe defective pointing to brickwork, porous brickwork, cracked or porous render or open joints in the structure. Even less obvious sources maybe leaking pipes under floors or within the structure or a raised water table.

There could be problems with rising damp due to defective damp proof courses or, in some cases, no damp proof course at all.

Brickwork could also be below ground level and vulnerable to penetrating dampness.

Last week, Suzie Simons was lucky enough to be a guest at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her voluntary work with the Royal National Institute of the Blind. The charity is the UK’s leading organisation that supports blind and partially sighted people, offering practical and emotional support.

Suzie became blind soon after having her first child, Daniel, around 13 years ago, and found adapting to her new situation very difficult. As she explains, “When I was first registered blind, I didn’t deal with it very well.

Because it was such a sudden thing, I didn’t know what to do and I kind of put my head in the sand for a while.” Through support from her friends and family, she began to face up to her situation and went on to have her second child Hannah.

When her youngest child started nursery, she decided that she wanted to try and do something positive not only to help herself, but to help others dealing with similar situations, and decided to train as a counsellor. As part of her

course, in her second year she had a voluntary placement at the RNIB based in King’s Cross, which she really enjoyed and decided to put her course on hold to continue working at the RNIB, where she retrained as a facilitator.

It is through this role that she became involved in “Living with Sight Loss” courses at the RNIB. These courses are open to anyone experiencing sight loss, no matter what stage they are in their sight loss journey. They run for one day per week over four weeks offering help and advice on a range of relevant topics and issues. Guest speakers come in and talk to the groups, sharing their own experiences. The course offers practical advice, such as help with everyday living, finding a job or even looking at sports and fitness that can be done with a visual impairment.

The course also helps to introduce participants to the huge array of gadgets that can be used to help them in their daily lives, and Suzie feels that technology is very important, and finds them essential in her own everyday life. As she explains, “The amount of technology currently available is amazing and has helped me to regain some of my independence. I have a watch that speaks to me, a scanner that reads my mail and a computer that can read what is on the screen, so I can read my emails, keep in touch with people and surf the web”.

Suzie feels the courses offered by the RNIB allow people to

grow in confidence and gain independence. They also offer participants a chance to meet with other visually impaired people, so they can share their experiences and learn from each other. Suzie appreciates first-hand how difficult it can be to adjust to sight loss, and how useful these course can be. As she explains, “I feel I have been incredibly lucky to be surrounded by amazing friends and family but finding RNIB helped me so much in learning to accept my sight loss although I didn’t know the course existed until much later, and wish that this type of course had been available to me when I first lost her sight. This is one of the reasons I continue volunteering. I want to be part of helping to empower other visually impaired people.”

For Suzie, losing her sight has not stopped her leading an extremely full life and she is determined to carry on doing the things she loves. “I think that having a disability does not mean that you can’t do things; you just have to do things differently. I still enjoy going on holiday, going out with friends and especially reading which I do now through headphones.

It’s all about doing things differently! You only get one life on this Earth, so you have to make the best of what you have and live it to the full.” She has also had many opportunities that she would not have had had it not been for her visual impairment, such as going rally car racing, being a torch bearer at the London Paralympics at London 2012 and receiving her invitation to hang out with royalty at the garden party.

has found that there are a lot of misconceptions about visual impairment which she is keen to address and hopes that there can a better understanding of this within mainstream society. As she explains, “There are many people who think that if you are blind all you see is black but actually this only really applies to around 6 to 7% of blind people and most that are registered blind actually have some residual sight.” In Suzie’s case, she has no central vision but has some peripheral vision which means that she can see shapes and contrast but no details no matter how close she gets, and colours are now very distorted.

As well as her visual impairment, Suzie unfortunately also suffers from MS which she developed in her late teens, which can leave her with chronic pain and fatigue. It is the same condition that her father also had. As she explains, “My own father passed away from the same condition, so when I was first diagnosed I was concerned about how it would affect me and how my life would be but I have learnt to accept it. I don’t want to just be viewed as a blind person or someone with MS and for people to feel sorry for me” she continues, “I have other areas of my life which are just as important and relevant to me, such as being a mummy to two lovely children.”

Suzie and her children have been very much supported not only by their strong network of friends and family but also by local charity, GIFT. As Suzie explains, “GIFT have been great in many ways for us and have helped my children doing the

things that I struggle with. When the kids were very little they would work with the volunteers who helped them with their reading and writing. I wanted to make sure my disability never held them back‘.

For Suzie, being invited to attend the garden party is a real honour and she really enjoyed the day. She hopes to be able to continue helping others to feel empowered and gain confidence through her work, and would also like to develop her training and coaching skills so that in the future she can possibly go on to help others dealing with traumatic experiences.

She believes that whilst her situation is not ideal, that everyone has their own issues that they have to deal with. “For me, I feel I have come a long way and grown so much since I was first diagnosed with MS and understand that whatever happens in life, no one gets out trauma free.” She does not dwell on her situation or let it define her, and continues to retain her positive outlook and make the best of every opportunity. As she explains, “I think my biggest coping strategy is not to judge myself or compare the way I am coping to other people. I don’t want my situation to define me or confine me. I think that whilst you can’t always control what happens in your life, it is how you deal with it that really matters.”
