POLITICIANS VOW FURTHER CONSTRUCTION AT FUNERAL OF TERROR VICTIM ADIEL KOLMAN

Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat led tributes to Adiel Kolman murdered in a terror attack in Jerusalem’s Old City earlier this week.

The 32-year-old Israeli security guard from the West Bank settlement of Kochav Hashachar was critically injured following a horrific stabbing attack on Sunday.

The father of four underwent surgery at Shaare Zedek Hospital but died from his injures.

Kolman worked in archaeological digs at the City of David.

Shin Bet security service said an Israel Police officer shot dead the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Abd al-Rahman Bani Fadel, at the scene on

Fadel lived in the village of Aqraba near the West Bank city of Nablus and was in Jerusalem on a five-day work permit.

“Our revenge is settlement and holding tight to the land,” said Ariel at Kolman’s funeral service on Monday.

“I hope we’ll continue to advance construction in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and make a clear decision that between the Jordan (River) and (Mediterannean) Sea there will only be one sovereign state, the State of Israel.”

Mayor Barkat likewise pledged support for further construction.

“Yesterday they succeeded in killing Adiel,” Burkat said.

Fresh outrage at Coroner Board and JLC launch Brexit paper at Westminster

Daniel Hannan MEP and Louise Ellman MP discussed a range of issues with Sky broadcaster Sandy Rashty at a packed event in the Houses of Parliament.

“The EU is based around the idea that the nation state is arbitrary, transient and discredited,” said Mr Hannan.

“I can’t think of a stronger vindication of the desire of people to form their own state than the story of Israel.”

Ellman added: “The important work the EU has done has helped us to address antisemitism and may provide protection on issues such as Shechita.”

The paper asks for assurances that financial sanctions are not lifted on anti-Semitic terror groups after we leave the European Union.

Other areas the report covers are trade with Israel and issues concerning kosher meat.

“Since the EU referendum, there has been a great deal of uncertainty around Britain’s future,” said Gillian Merron, BoD. “This Paper clarifies how leaving the European Union could affect the Jewish community and sets out our position regarding key areas of Jewish life.

“We hope that it will both inform and shape the debate around the withdrawal process and ensure that the Jewish community is able to continue to thrive in the UK,” added Simon Johnson, JLC. The All Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews hosted the event.

Jewish schools targeted with bomb hoax

BY ADAM MOSES Jewish schools in London were among 400 British schools targeted with a bomb hoax on Monday.

Metropolitan Police confirmed “malicious communications” had been sent to schools across London but after investigating informed educational establishments they were treating them as a hoax.

Throughout the incident the CST advised school security officers to report anything suspicious and “continuously sweep” locations.

Turning to social media to reassure schools and parents they tweeted: “CST had many calls from Jewish schools this morning that received identical threatening hoax emails, demanding money.

Non Jewish schools had the same hoax emails. School life continues, with security guards alerted.”

They added in a later tweet: “CST thanks the schools, Police, commercial security guarding companies and relevant Government departments for their correct, speedy responses to this morning’s hoax emails. We remain calm and alert.”

Kantor King Solomon School in Ilford was among a number of schools to evacuate pupils in emergency measures though CST advised against this option.

“We acted in conjunction with CST and the Metropolitan Police.

We have established that there is no further threat and School is now running as normal.”

Faith schools were targeted across the UK with several reporting the hoax.

Following the incident, Mark Gardener, CST praised the manner in which Jewish schools had reacted in light of recent terror incidents.

“CST thanks the many schools that contacted our London and Manchester offices, acting swiftly, correctly and with the physical and emotional well being of students and staff as the priority,” he commented.

Zyl, said: “As part of an interfaith and cross-party delegation, I made it clear to Justice Minister Dr Phillip Lee MP that Mary Hassell lacks any respect for the diverse communities she is meant to serve.

“I urged him that Ms Hassell must be made accountable for her actions, which are causing so much distress. Dr Lee said he took the views of the Jewish and Muslim communities very seriously, and would be speaking to the Chief Coroner, His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft QC, about the meeting.”

Israeli companies linked to Cambridge Analytica revelations

BY JW REPORTER Cambridge Analytica has reportedly used Israeli companies and former Israeli spies as part of its intelligence gathering.

The revelation is the latest twist in the fast moving story on the British data-mining company who worked on the Trump presidential campaign.

Undercover reporters secretly taped CEO Alexander Nix, and Channel 4 disclosed their assertions in a documentary televised on Monday.

The Trump campaign paid Cambridge Analytica over $6 million during the

campaign according to federal election records.

Facebook suspended the company on Friday after finding it breached its data privacy policies.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been asked to appear before a British parliamentary committee to answer questions.

Cambridge Analytica denies it used the reported information for the Trump campaign, despite suspending their CEO Alexander Nix after the undercover recordings were aired.

Community leaders slam Two Palestinian terror attacks Labour MP Williamson kill three Israelis

Jewish community leaders have slammed outspoken Labour MP Chris Williamson after he spoke at a Momentum-organised event in Peterborough alongside banned Labour activist Jackie Walker.

The former Momentum vice chair was performing her one-woman show ‘The Lynching’ when Williamson defended Labour actions against anti-Semitism in an address to the audience amongst a number of reported controversial comments.

The Labour Party suspended Walker over alleged anti-Semitic comments in 2016.

Local MP Fiona Onasanya pulled out of the event alluding to her “concern” over the speakers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am vehemently opposed to anti-Semitism and was invited to speak out against racism, but will not be attending,” she tweeted.

“Sadly, this is the kind of behaviour we have come to expect from Chris Williamson,” said Board of Deputies President, Jonathan Arkush.

“We called for him to be sacked last year from the shadow cabinet over outrageous comments labelling claims of

anti-Semitism in Labour ‘a dirty lowdown trick’.

“His actions since have confirmed that he is an embarrassment to his own party and the Party should consider further sanctions against Mr Williamson, including a public rebuke and the removal of the Labour whip.”

Simon Johnson, Jewish Leadership Council, commented: “It never ceases to amaze me when so called anti racists switch so seamlessly into attacking and demonising Israel.

“Do they not realise the irony? Do they not see that denying the right of the Jewish state, Israel to exist is anti-Semitic and therefore racist? Or does their anti-racism extend to everyone except Jews?

“You can see now why many Jews are rightly suspicious of such anti-racism events.”

Mark Gardner, CST added: “If you want to understand mainstream Jewish communal fears about the Labour Party, Chris Williamson MP’s defence of Jackie Walker and Ken Livingstone is a good place to start: as is his attack on John Mann MP, who sits on the opposite end of Labour’s stance on these issues.”

Distraught family members gave poignant tributes.

President Reuven Rivlin tweeted that the killing was “abhorrent” and the bereaved family’s pain “unbearable”.

Rivlin pledged to fight and overcome terror on the streets of Jerusalem where Jews and Arabs have lived together for hundreds of years.

“We will not allow it (terror) to become an existing reality,” he said.

Rivlin slated supporters of terror at an economic conference in Tel Aviv.

“Whoever gives shelter, pays murderers and encourages incitement is cooperating with terror and becomes an enemy of Israel and the free world,” a Hebrew statement from his office noted (Times of Israel).

able to do so. The whole world must denounce the terror and incitement and cooperate with Israel in the battle against them.”

Eight Palestinian bystanders were arrested allegedly of witnessing the incident but doing nothing to prevent or lesson the injuries sustained by Kolman after police discovered footage by a camera on Hagai Street in the Muslim Quarter.

All were subsequently released after a judge accepted they did not realise the severity of the incident during 34 seconds between the stabbing and police arriving at the scene.

Kolman’s murder came just two days after IDF soldiers Ziv Daos, 21, and Netanel Kahalani, 20, were killed by a Palestinian in car-ramming attack in the West Bank.

Two soldiers were also injured in the terror incident near close to Jenin.

The driver was arrested near the scene.

A Hamas spokesman described the attack as “heroic” coming on a day when Palestinian terror groups had called for a ‘day of rage’ to mark 100 days following the announcement of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Board of Deputies vice president Richard Verber condemned the deadly attack.

“Our hearts go out to the families,” he said.

“May their memories be for a blessing. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured.”

Mock seders and help for needy over Pesach across UK

Jewish organisations are all set to help the needy for Pesach.

And mock seders galore have been taking place with many more to follow in advance of the festival next week.

The United Synagogue Chesed department are conducting their annual Pesach Parcel initiative.

This initiative helps close to 600 families that struggle with the costs of Pesach.

Forty-five US communities participate in the project which provides vouchers or parcels with everyday food items ranging from matzah to cheese, jam, cold meats, tea and coffee.

Help is provided to several charities and also to many individuals who wish to attend shul communal sedarim but cannot afford the cost.

Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, said: “ We provide sensitive and discreet help to those in our communities who are struggling financially, especially at this time, and it is thanks to our generous donors that we are able

to do so.

Mill Hill Synagogue member David Landau organises volunteers to care in their local area.

Some members of this group have been doing visits, often with their children, for over 20 years.

Pesach GIFT boxes have been deployed outside kosher shops around London and Manchester in preparation for the festival.

Shoppers have taken up the ‘Buy One GIFT One’ L’Pesach food initiative to help those struggling to make ends meet.

GIFT are also inviting schools and communities to do Pesach food collections.

Jewish Care’s community centres and residents of homes across London and the South East have held mock Seders.

Children from nurseries and schools joined older members to create a special intergenerational telling of the Passover story.

And a choir joined Jewish Care’s Brenner Centre members at Stepney Community Centre.

The Pesach Singers led a lively service.

“Our Seder is one of the

highlights of the year here,” said Jamie Field, East London Area Manager.

“For many of our members it is now the only Seder they have.

They remember the songs and love the food. It connects them to their past and ensures that they remain connected to the community and religion.”

Children from Nagila preschool nursery joined members from Jewish Care’s Edgware and Harrow Community Centre for an annual mock Seder.

Clore Manor home in Hendon hosted the Independent Jewish Day School with more seders planned next week.

Rabbi Bentzi Sudak, CEO of Chabad Lubavitch UK told The Jewish Weekly that Chabad will be hosting over 40 communal sedarim across the country this year A full list of where all the Chabad sedarim are taking place is available upon request.

In Manchester, Cllr Rabbi Arnold Saunders is looking forward to conducting the communal seder at Newlands Residential Care Home for the 25th year on the run.

In Leeds, following the closure of Moortown Deli, the Pesach Pop Up Shop at Etz Chaim Synagogue has proved a huge hit with the community shorn of its main dedicated delicatessen.

Organisers behind the initiative have provided over 200 lines of produce.

Chabad Lubavitch Leeds is running it’s annual Maos Chittim Pesach Fund.

Rabbi Angyalfi spearheads this and local clergy all help.

Rabbi Eli Pink annually provides money for the needy this time of year. And he is distributing food donated by the community along with funds for Yom Tov items.

Funds raised are distributed discreetly to families across Leeds.

In addition, two ladies are running the Mitzvah in a Minute project.

Bins are sited at the Pop-Up Pesach shop for non-perishable items.

Five bins were collected on the first day, food will be distributed alongside the Pesach Fund.

Yad Vashem launches anti-Semitism course

BY LEAH WAXLER Yad Vashem has launched an online anti-Semitism course.

‘Anti-Semitism: From its origins to the present’ is available on the FutureLearn platform.

Community Security Trust’s Head of Policy, Dr Dave Rich, and Government and International Affairs Director, Mike Whine, were both interviewed for the project.

CST provided historical material related to anti-Semitism and the Holocaust in the development of the programme.

“CST is very proud to be part of such an important educational resource at Yad Vashem,” said Mark Gardener, CST. The six-week course, which engages over 50 scholars, tracks anti-Semitism throughout history. Over 3,000 students have enrolled.

Dr Rich’s lecture on conspiracy theories and anti-Semitism is available on Yad Vashem’s YouTube channel.

NEWS IN ISRAEL Britain, France and Germany urge EU to consider new Iran sanctions Britain, France and Germany yesterday proposed that the EU implement new sanctions on Iran because of its involvement in the conflict in Syria and continued development of ballistic missiles.

Reuters reports that the three European signatories to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement proposed that the sanctions target Iranians who have supported Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the Syrian civil war and are involved in Iran’s ballistic missile programme.

French Foreign Minister JeanYves Le Drian said he is “determined to ensure” Iran respects the JCPOA agreement and stressed that the EU “must not exclude [from consideration] Iran’s responsibility in the proliferation of ballistic missiles and in its very questionable role in the near and Middle East”. Belgium’s Foreign Minister Didier Reynders agreed that the EU “must explore all the

possible measures”.

The EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini stressed that there was no formal EU position on new sanctions, which would require the support of all 28 member states.

US President Donald Trump has given the European signatories of the JCPOA a deadline of 12 May to fix what he termed “the terrible flaws” of the deal, otherwise he will not extend US sanctions relief on Iran. The Chairman of the Senate

Foreign Relations Committee Bob Corker said he now expects the US to withdraw from the agreement altogether in May unless the European signatories “really come together on a framework”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the West of “sheer hypocrisy” in response, tweeting that European states are willing to sell arms to countries in the Middle East whilst “whining about Iran’s defensive missiles”.

Saudi Crown Prince to meet President Trump

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will meet US President Donald Trump today, as part of his extended visit to the US. Following his visit to London earlier this month, the Crown Prince’s meetings in Washington are expected to focus on Saudi-US defence relations. Saudi Arabia agreed to purchase 48 Typhoon fighter jets from the UK during the Crown Prince’s visit to the UK earlier this month, who also acts as Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister. The deal formed part of a renewed £65bn trade deal between the two countries.

The Crown Prince recently said in a CBS 60 Minutes interview that Saudi Arabia would build its own nuclear weapons if Iran were to develop them. “Saudi Arabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt, if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible,” he said. The Crown Prince also said he was working on an initiative for equal pay for men and women as part of his attempts to modernise the Kingdom.

Speaking to CNN News yesterday, Saudi Ambassador to the US Prince Khalid bin Salman talked about Saudi Arabia’s role in the conflict in Yemen, explaining that Iran wants to form “another Hezbollah in Yemen, which will not just threaten our security and Yemeni security, but also regional security”.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington also confirmed on Sunday that today’s visit will lay the foundations for Crown Prince Mohammed’s father, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, to visit Washington later this year.

The Crown Prince is spending a full two weeks in the US on a lengthy trip that will include visits to New York, Boston, Houston, Seattle and California, where he will meet representatives from Apple and Google. Saudi plans to diversify the oil-dependent economy will involve seeking investment from private US companies. Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser told CNBC that he had been in discussions with Google’s parent company Alphabet over building a data centre in the Kingdom.

Where is all the chometz?

Dear Jewish Weekly,

I write in response to last week’s letter from Yaacov Opat of Hendon who criticised one of your journalists although not by name. I believe that particular journlist wrote an excellent balanced news piece (not obituary as Mr Opat suggested) on Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach mentioning he was a Torah giant and well-respected figure within the Torah and Jewish world.

Why do shops change over for Pesach more than 3 weeks before Pesach. The majority of people do not start cooking so well in advanced and it has become almost impossible for me to find a varied selection of chometz goods around London.

Your journalist pointed out that Rabbi Auerbach in his later years was a controversial figure because he chose to get involved with politics unlike his great father and caused a split within the Lithuanian Orthodox community.

Whilst I understand that there are people who change over very early, the shops should offer more chometz products until nearer to Pesach.

Many within the frum community are against the fact that Rabbi Auerbach and others called for hundreds of Yeshiva boys to regularly close their Gemorah’s and block traffic for hours at main intersections in Jerusalem and B’nei Brak, causing a terrible Chillel Hashem.

We live in such a polarised society today and today the strictly Orthodox community is even split, so we “little people” are also allowed to speak up and I speak for many other local frum people, some of whom are Rabbis.

Jews join Muslim day of social action – with 25 partnerships around the UK and beyond

21-year-old Cambridge graduate launches YouTube-inspired company

Matthew Ryder, the Deputy Mayor of London for Social Integration, Social Mobility and Community Engagement met Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN) staff and volunteers to understand how the leading faith-based volunteering organisation was complementing the Mayor’s new social integration strategy, part of which is to ensure a tool is available for people to mobilise around social action in the community.

In anticipation of informing JVN about his work, he was both surprised and delighted that the charity seemed to be very closely aligned with his plans. He noted that “JVN is the model for other organisations and are the future of volunteering for London because they have a unique product.”

Matthew clearly recognised that faith communities knew their members better than most and understood the values inherent in volunteering.

He had grown up in the Barnet area where his mother had been a volunteer in the CAB and he has always valued the important of volunteering in his family life. When asked about funding for volunteering and mental health projects, he agreed that a lot of words had been spoken but there were limited funds.

Newly-graduated Cambridge alumni Joe Binder has set up his own digital marketing company, WOAW, to use his experience building a following online to help companies transform their reputations.

WOAW (pronounced WOW) offers businesses two main services: brand and reputation management and tailored content marketing, where a team of experienced writers are on hand to make engaging content quickly, in whatever style and tone a company might want.

Starting a business hasn’t been easy. Joe’s business strategy for the first 6 months was nearly thrown totally overboard when a major client pulled out at the last minute.

But he persevered, and he’s now working with several clients in industries as diverse as Technology, Fintech, Recruitment and Beauty, and has more big projects lined up.

The Deputy Mayor, who was accompanied by members of Team London, praised the work of the JVN, particularly in the interfaith arena. He was made aware that JVN had helped and supported Caritas Westminster to develop its website and is currently working with The Faith Forum for London and some Muslim organisations to establish a Muslim Volunteering Network.

He commented, “JVN builds bridges with other faith communities and it’s fantastic how they share expertise.”

Matthew believes that this cross-fertilisation of ideas, together with the sharing of good practice, were key components for cohesion and offered opportunity for more

engagement in community life. He said about volunteering that it was “a silver bullet to cut through difficulties when people say things can’t be done,” and was looking forward to spreading the message about what JVN does and take it back to City Hall.

JVN is grateful for the support of Team London and will seek to enhance that relationship over the next few months. Leonie Lewis MBE, Director of JVN, said “We were privileged to receive such a visit which was both informative and supporting of our work and we’re looking forward to an ever closer relationship with the Mayor’s office in the coming year.”

Project ImpACT volunteers make a difference

Last week eighty Project ImpACT youth volunteers gave back to the community by making special Passover boxes for seriously ill children and their families. The Project was in support of Camp Simcha and Chai Cancer Care and involved teenagers from across 12 synagogues.

To inform the young volunteers about the two charities, the event began with a short talk by Mandy Isaacs, head of client services at Camp Simcha and Jo Awad, family community liaison at Chai Cancer Care. They then got into small groups and assembled boxes, filling them with a variety of Kosher for Passover goodies, fun games, educational games and other items

for children to enjoy with their families, such as ‘decorate your own Pesach mugs’.

Project ImpACT runs weekly youth volunteering sessions for Years 9-11 across north west London, educating the next generation about giving back to their society and providing opportunities for

practical and enjoyable hands-on experiences helping a range of community organisations. The sessions encourage young people to make an impact, support different charities across London, and develop their characters and skills.

Moriah Jewish Day School sing at JFS gala concert

Last week the JFS school in Kenton held a Gala Concert in honour of their 285th anniversary and to commemorate 15 years in Kenton.

The Moriah Jewish Day School choir joined the JFS choir and several other Jewish primary school choirs to perform a repertoire of songs together, as well as performing themselves.

Barnet Council prepares for Pesach Barnet Council’s Pesach refuse collection service will operate as ever this year, albeit with certain minor differences from before. There will be over 300 designated roads in the Borough where the special collection will take place automatically.

The list of roads is available from the Council and its media sources.

For residents of designated roads whose normal collection days are Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, collections will take place as usual from bins only, on 26, 27 or 28 March, as the case may be. Any further refuse needing disposal thereafter before Pesach will be taken by special collection from those roads on Thursday 29 March at any time from 6.30 am. The refuse must be placed in sacks only (i.e not within bins) which must be left on the boundary of properties – not exceeding three sacks per property.

In designated roads where normal collections are on Thursday or Friday bins will be collected as usual on 29 or 30 March as the case may be, together with a maximum of three separate sacks placed on the boundary with them. After that there will be no further special

collections from those roads Residents of non-designated roads needing a special collection are able to book this during the current week until midday Friday 23 March by phone: 020 8359 4600 or e mail: pesach@barnet. gov.uk. Those collections, in sacks only with a maximum of three per property, will take place any time after 6.30 am on Thursday 29 March.

Cllr Dean Cohen, Chair of the Environment Committee and Cllr Brian Gordon, Chair of Hendon Area Committee, have worked on the arrangements in conjunction with officers in the Council’s “Street Scene” section. Cllr Gordon said “Our community can continue to be proud of the refuse service provided for Jewish residents at Pesach. This year is a little more challenging as Friday erev Pesach coincides with a public holiday when Council employees are not mandated to work, though many in the refuse department still do. We are hopeful the service will run to the efficient standard to which we are accustomed” .

Eight Kisharon supporters scale Ben Nevis to raise £30k Eight participants have taken part in Kisharon’s Ben Nevis Winter challenge, which saw the explorers scale the UK’s highest peak, standing at 4,408 ft. The climb involves 8-10 hours of ascent over 11 miles. All participants received specialist Winter skills training for the 3-day challenge and were accompanied by qualified winter mountain guides with many years of experience climbing Ben Nevis. The group has so far collectively raised £27,000 towards their £30,000 target to help finance Kisharon’s vital work in support of hundreds of Jewish children and adults with learning difficulties. Participants include mother and daughter duo Suzanne and Lucy Weiniger, 13, Ian Liss, David Bloom, Shaun Ledgerwood, Gideon Krotosky and Kisharon’s Shani Mirwis and Richard Franklin. Ian Liss has 52 years’ experience climbing some of the UK’s highest peaks including Ben Nevis and has come out of retirement to climb Ben Nevis once again, in support of Kisharon, a charity close to his heart.

Having scaled the UK’s highest peak, participants had the opportunity to take part in a well-deserved post-climb tour of the Dalwhinnie and Oban whiskey distilleries.

New US community becomes a full member Earlier this week, the United Synagogue Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of Mill Hill East Jewish Community (MHE) joining The US as a full member synagogue.

This marks a significant moment for the organisation as Mill Hill East is the first of its ‘Communities of Potential’ to do so.

The Communities of Potential project was set up following the Strategic Review, which was undertaken in 2015, to seek out areas of Jewish growth or renewal and to work with local partners to invest and develop new communities.

In early 2016, the Communities of Potential Board identified Mill Hill East & Millbrook Park as an area of Jewish growth. Following an open evening attended by 80 people, the fledgling Mill Hill East Jewish Community was formed and held its first Friday night service in September 2016. In that time it has grown to a community holding Shabbat services fortnightly that attract on average of 70 people. Since its inception it has held educational, social and family events and actively participated in Shabbat UK and in Mitzvah Day in the local community.

Speaking about the success of the community, co-founders Josh Kleiman and Avi Gillis commented: “Having watched Mill Hill East develop over the last couple of years, we are delighted to become a full member of the

Jacob smashes ‘Bar-Athlon’ target for World Jewish Relief and Jewish Care A Bar Mitzvah/school boy from Crouch End has smashed his charitable fundraising target by completing a Bar-Athlon - a Bar Mitzvah-inspired Triathlon and has raised more than £1600 for World Jewish Relief and Jewish Care. Jacob Shulman-Miller decided to swim, walk and cycle as part of his Bar Mitzvah celebrations Over the last six weeks the self-confessed ‘couch-potato’ has swam 1600m in the pool, walked 13km from school to home and cycled 40km in his local gym.

As with all sporting challenges there were a few adventures and setbacks along the way including a detour on the way back from school which meant Jacob and his group of friends clocking up 18km in total.

Jacob says, “Now that it’s complete I’m relieved and proud of myself. Volunteering is important and I feel good about making a contribution.

“As my Bar Mitzvah approached I decided that as well as celebrating this amazing milestone, I also wanted to make a difference. Following a very moving trip to Moldova with my family last year, I saw first-hand how important World Jewish Relief’s

work is for Jewish communities across Eastern Europe. I became a World Jewish Relief Young Advocate so I could tell people about their amazing work.

“This year I’m taking part in Jewish Care’s Bnei Mitzvah programme and I’m really enjoying my time volunteering with older people in Jewish Care homes and learning about becoming an active member of the community.

“It’s been amazing to have been supported by so many friends and family in raising vital money for these two great charities”.

Sarah and Larry, Jacob’s parents say, “We are so proud of Jacob’s achievements. It’s very impressive given he’s not a naturally keen exerciser but he’s been taking on the challenges over a period of time, breaking it down into achievable chunks.

An evening in memory of Joy Conway US Women celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women on International Women’s Day by welcoming 250 guests to their annual dinner at St John’s Wood United Synagogue.

The evening was in memory of Joy Conway, an inspirational community leader who became the first woman to sit at the US Trustee table long before any provision had been made in the byelaws. Tributes to Joy were given by both family members as well as long standing friend, Stella Lucas MBE. A captivated audience listened to guest speaker, Claire Lomas MBE, whose spoke about her incredible effort to walk the London Marathon in 17 days using the ReWalk body suit invented in Israel for wheelchair users, after becoming paralysed from the chest down in a horse riding accident in 2007. Claire left guests with the following message: “believe in yourself…don’t give up”.

Speaking about the event, US Women Co-Chair Jacqui Zinkin said: “The US Women Annual Dinner was an amazing event which marked a significant change in the influence held by women within the United Synagogue. US Women took the brave decision to dissolve in its current form and re-emerge as a sub-committee of the US Trustee board, enabling women’s issues to be addressed in the mainstream strategic development of the United Synagogue. It is fitting that on International Women’s Day, our members came together to celebrate our continued contribution to our community. I would like to thank everyone who worked tirelessly to make this amazing event happen and to the inspirational Clare Lomas MBE for sharing her story with us.”

The evening also featured an appeal to raise money towards providing disabled access for synagogues as well as a mini auction.

& Volunteer Spotlight Tell us about yourself In my professional life I am a trainer and coach in Employability Skills and help people who want to find a new job or get back to work after a career break. Occasionally I do this on a voluntary basis for charities that need my services but mostly it is for private clients or organisations who want workshops or coaching. Prior to setting up my coaching business (Changing Direction), I worked at the University Of Westminster running training programmes for people who had been unemployed for a long time. It is very rewarding helping people into employment, off benefits and becoming contributing members of society. I am also

a Lay Examiner for two of the Royal Colleges of medicine and examine the aspiring doctors on their communication skills, which is really interesting. I have four adult children and a wonderful collection of grandchildren with whom I spend as much time as I can, juggling work and being their grandma.

How and why did you get into volunteering?

I have been a volunteer for many years, starting out on the WIZO National executive when my children were small. It was an excellent way of gaining more skills when the children were young and also keeping my brain active. When it was time to return to work after being a full-time

mum, I had lots of transferable skills which helped me make that transition back to employment.

At present I volunteer for several organisations, but most recently, I organise Blood Donor Sessions in my shul (Dunstan Road) and we were very excited to win a Mitzvah Day award a few weeks ago for Interfaith Work.

People from all backgrounds and religions come together to donate blood which the NHS really appreciate and we do this three times a year with a team of willing helpers to ensure that the day runs smoothly.

How has volunteering changed your life and the those you volunteer for??

As well as all the existing volunteering I am doing, Leonie Lewis of JVN has asked me to help with a new project which I am very excited about and hope it will turn into something really meaningful. Details are not yet finalised but I am looking forward to being associated with JVN on a more formal and regular basis as I think it is doing great work for both the Jewish and wider community. I am also on the Board of Management of my shul. Our family lived in Pinner for many years but after my husband passed away, I started a new life in Golders Green.

Being involved as a volunteer is really important to me as it gives a sense of purpose, it’s great to feel needed and to look back feeling that you have done something useful. I particularly like being involved with many different organisations and meeting people from all backgrounds. I like to feel stretched and challenged and the diverse kinds of volunteering I am doing give me many opportunities to use a wide range of skills, whether organisational or coaching, or just listening when people need to talk. It’s also great to see that my older grandchildren are also starting to volunteer so it’s clearly in the blood!

Dads enjoy drumming beats PaJeS champions promoting children’s mental health and wellbeing with The Centre PaJeS, a division of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), hosted a Mental Health & Wellbeing Conference for headteachers from across England and Scotland, as part of its three-stage training programme on mental health and wellbeing for Jewish schools. The conference, which featured interactive workshops run by mental health and wellbeing charity Place2Be, was designed to help provide participants with a framework to think and talk about mental health and resilience in their schools.

Following the jointly published green paper by the Department for Education and the Department for Health on “Transforming Young People’s Mental Health Provision”, participants discussed ways of implementing ideas to enable both staff and students to promote emotional resilience and wellbeing in their schools.

The heads of both primary and secondary schools engaged in Student Wellbeing workshops, with primary school leaders joining a session on “Building Resilience”, which saw them learn ‘solution –focused techniques’ and frameworks for empowering children to solve their own problems. Meanwhile

secondary school leaders participated in an “Understanding Adolescents” session on understanding adolescent development in the context of low mood and anxiety.

Both sessions were run by Place2be trainers Matthew Audley and Julia Clements, to provide the headteachers with age appropriate training for their students.

Guest speaker Mandy Saligari, addiction parenting and relationship counsellor, founder of drug treatment facility Charter Harley Street and contributor to Channel 5’s ‘In Therapy’ series, also delivered a lecture on ‘Parenting for Prevention’, in which she spoke about preventing addictive behaviours and self-care.

The programme concluded with a brainstorming session which saw the headteachers commit to prioritising mental health and wellbeing as part of a holistic approach to childrens’ wellbeing. The heads also committed to take on the Department for Education’s recommendations to explore adopting a Mental Health Champion for the school to take a lead on these issues.

David Meyer, Executive Director of PaJeS said: “The Headteachers conference on MHW is the

culmination of over two years of planning to help support schools in this important area. It has brought together leading experts in Mental Health and Wellbeing and, thanks to the generosity of our funders, will help ensure that PaJeS is delivering the highest quality training for our schools, and in turn the best possible provision for our children.”

Patrick Johnston, Director of Learning at Place2Be, said: “School leaders tell us that children are bringing more worries to school on a day to day basis. On average, three children in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health issue, and schools recognise how this can limit children’s ability to thrive in their education. Based on our experience of providing schoolbased mental health services for more than 23 years, Place2Be has developed a range of development programmes to support school staff with this challenge. Our programmes empower staff at all levels to understand more about children’s mental health and development, and to build their knowledge and confidence to help pupils who need it most.”

The 80th Anniversary of the Anschluss The Association of Jewish refugees (AJR) and the Austrian Embassy in London held a joint commemoration last week to mark the 80th anniversary of the Anschluss.

The event, held on 13 March at the Austrian Ambassador’s residence, was attended by Sir Erich Reich – Chair of the Kindertransport specialist group of the AJR, Sir Eric Pickles - Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust issues, Markus Feurstein of the Claims Conference, and Hannah Lessing - Secretary General of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism, among others.

The Anschluss was the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, and marked the beginning of seven years of persecution, exile or murder for Jewish and minority groups by the Nazi regime. A spokesperson for the Austrian Embassy said, “This catastrophe left Austria with a historic and moral responsibility to never forget and to draw lessons for present times and future generations. This commemorative event is dedicated to the victims of Nazi persecution and to those working

At this Dad Time event participants enjoyed a special drumming workshop led by JooJoo Drums along with music, arts and crafts and a delicious brunch.

Rabbi Gary Bazak who was leading the event commented: “There are lots of mums and babies groups around and also family events. The Centre wanted to find a new way of helping dads to spend some extra quality time with their kids. Watch this space for more events next term.”

Devorah Leah one of the kids at the event said: “The drumming was so much fun and I loved the arts and crafts. Thank you!”

The Centre is a new social and educational initiative providing programmes, events and fun for Jewish families in Borehamwood.

It is a project of Aish, JLE, Seed and Olami.

Mill Hill East Jewish Community organised an evening of vodka tasting and Jewish history. Attendees learned from World Jewish Relief’s Richard Verber how Jews in Eastern Europe were at the heart of the alcohol industry, running pubs and taverns, in Poland and Lithuania in the 17th and 18th centuries. Participants were taken on a sampling tour of vodkas from Ukraine, Russia and Poland.

Jamie Slavin, one of the volunteers from Mill Hill East involved in organising the event, said: “We were delighted to welcome Richard and World Jewish Relief to Mill Hill East Jewish Community for what was a fascinating talk. Our community is the first to emerge from the ‘United Synagogue Communities of Potential’ initiative and we’re trying to take a fresh approach to

Jewish learning and culture. To be able to put on great events such as this, with such a well-established and important Jewish communal organisation, is a real privilege. We’d love to hear from other community organisations that want to be part of what we’re building in Mill Hill East.”

Charity Corner Chai Cancer Care

Chai Cancer Care provides a range of services for any member of the Jewish community who might be affected by cancer and offers a variety of 58 services. The Jewish Weekly chatted to Lisa Steele who has been involved with the charity for 16 years, and currently serves as the Chief Executive to find out what she does as part of her day.

8am – I usually get into the office before everyone else and go through emails and answerphone messages. There are often a range of messages from clients who may

want to change a counselling session to someone who may have recently been diagnosed with cancer and is getting in touch with us for the first time. We recognise how hard this can be, and our dedicated client service managers always try to get in touch with them as quickly as possible so that they can help.

9am – Our head office is in Hendon, but we operate from another 10 sites across the UK, and I often visit the other centres to catch up with the other teams. I am travelling to Manchester later this week, so send an email to confirm my travel details and meetings when I am there.

10am – As our client base increases, we are always in need of new counsellors and therapists, so I am often involved in interviews for these roles. We currently serve around 3100 clients nationally, so we need to ensure that we have enough staff to be able to offer the best service possible. This morning we are interviewing for two new complementary therapists, so one of our full time therapists is

Shoppers are being invited to ‘Buy One GIFT One’ item of Kosher L’Pesach food into the Pesach GIFT Boxes to help those struggling to makes ends meet. Items of food specifically requested are matzah, soup mix, tea, coffee, spreads, tuna, tins and other essentials i.e.

Yom Tov and yahrzeit candles and disposables.

GIFT provides weekly food and practical support to over 2000 people in financial, psychological and emotional need. A typical GIFT recipient is a widow referred recently to GIFT by her Rabbi as she is in severe financial difficulties and has four children, two of whom are on the autistic spectrum. She has no other family and little support from friends.

Without GIFT’s help, she tells us, she literally could not afford to keep kosher or provide food for her children over Pesach.

GIFT are inviting schools and communities to do Pesach food collections for those in need through GIFT.

The community are invited to bring in-date and unopened chometz e.g. pasta, cereal, crackers, biscuits and flour, which will be stored until after Pesach, sold through local Dayanim and distributed after the festival. Volunteers are needed at these times to help sort and pack the food.

11am – We have a weekly client services meeting with our 3 client service managers and the head of the department. The meeting enables them to update on particular cases, and discuss their workload. As the Chief Executive, it is important that I am involved on a ground level and that every part of the organisation feels supported.

12am – The phone usually starts ringing from around 8.30 each morning, and rings all day, so there are always lots of people that I need to respond to. We have our main phone line as well as a helpline, so every call we receive can be very different.

1pm – I am visiting a local primary school with one of our counsellors during lunchtime to meet with the head teacher and a Year 5 teacher. The mother of one of the children in the teacher’s class has recently been diagnosed with cancer, and the child is finding it hard to deal with this. We visit schools regularly through our ‘Chai in Schools’ Programme to guide the teachers in the best way to support the child, and we are also able to provide specialised music, art and play therapists who can come into school to help the child without causing too much disruption to

their school day. The schools are very open to this, and recognise the benefit for the child.

2pm – Our annual gift sale will be happening on 4th September, but planning for it has already begun, and we have regular meetings with the committee of volunteers.

Over 1000 people attended the event last year, and we are hoping even more will come this year. It is a great opportunity for people to visit the centre, as well as to purchase Rosh Hashanah gifts, jewellery, clothing and food from our stands.

3pm – One of the services that many people don’t realise that we offer is our Home Support Service for those unable to come to one of our centres. This can be anything from treatments such as massage or physiotherapy through to help and advice with accessing NHS resources, or finding out what benefits you might be entitled to. In complicated cases, I would attend a Home Support visit to help with any issues that might arise.

4pm – Later this year, new legislation is being introduced for all charities that relates to the way that organisations can use data. There is a lot of information to get to grips with, and I am attending a training session about this to ensure that I

have a good understand of it all.

As Chief Executive, dealing with issues relating to governance is a big part of my job.

5pm – We meet with our 7 trustees regularly to update them on what is happening at the charity and discuss future plans and events. The trustees are vital to the organisation, and it is great to be able to work so closely with them.

Having been involved with the charity for so many years, I have seen how it has grown and developed to reflect the needs of our clients. The services that we offer mean that we are a one-stop shop for anyone who is affected by cancer, and can help people on many different levels to deal with their situations. Being able to help people is a real privilege for me and I find it very humbling hearing many of the personal stories of the people that we deal with. It shows that what we are doing really makes a difference.

Side by Side praised and commended

by OFSTED inspectors Special needs school Side by Side has been rated ‘good’ in all categories, with inspectors noting the pupils’ outstanding behaviour, eagerness to demonstrate their learning and the tangible and vibrant way in which they ‘love their school’.

Inspectors noted the headteacher, Gerald Lebrett’s leadership, passion and drive. Together with his team and the governors they lead a school that inspires their pupils, ensures good progress as well as promoting the pupils’ personal development and welfare.

The report states that the quality of teaching and pupils’ outcomes are good and that teachers, therapists and learning support assistants work together effectively to meet the pupils’ varied and complex learning needs. In addition to the high-quality teaching and care, inspectors also observed how the parents and carers trust the school and noted the ‘fantastic’ progress their children were making.

The inspectors commented that the focus on Jewish religious education is balanced well with secular studies and that leaders are committed to preparing pupils for life in modern Britain as well-rounded Jewish citizens.

The report concluded with the inspectors’ observation that the pupils’ many achievements are celebrated widely, both in class, on displays and with their parents.

Reflecting on the inspection report, Gerald Lebrett, Headteacher of Side by Side, said: ‘The latest OFSTED inspection report is a testament to the dedication and care of our staff as they work tirelessly to ensure that our pupils have the opportunities to thrive and make progress. Our school is a leader in the education of children with special needs and I am thrilled to be at the helm of this remarkable school community.”

JLGB celebrate Duke of Edinburgh’s Award success at Menorah Grammar School A ceremony held on Friday celebrated the achievements of seven Menorah Grammar School (MGS) boys who each received the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award thanks to JLGB. This was the first time in recent years the school has taken part in the scheme for which JLGB has the exclusive licence to offer ‘Kosher DofE’ in Jewish schools across the United Kingdom.

Dovid Gabai, Yisroel Jacobs, Shlomo Lazarus, Naftoli Lebrecht, Raphael Moses, Aryeh Peters and Akiva Spector, were “happy and proud” to get their awards. All aged 14 or 15, the boys are Year 10 students at MGS, an independent orthodox Jewish school in Burnt Oak. An eighth student, Zvi Joseph, has since completed his Bronze DofE Award and 10 further students are nearing completion.

Presenting the certificates, MP Matthew Offord said: “I wish mazal tov to each and every one of you who has merited this DofE Award.

It is a wonderful achievement, something that you can be very proud of. You are an inspiration to the school and to everyone around

you. The awards encourage younger people to do volunteering and to prepare themselves physically and mentally – and socially – reaching out to others who are perhaps less fortunate… They are a good foundation for a bright and worthwhile future and career.”

Earlier, Rabbi Dovid Sulzbacher addressed a 130-strong audience including head teacher Neil Moir and JLGB Chief Executive Mr Neil Martin OBE. Explaining “that it has to fit in totally with our religion” Rabbi Sulzbacher paid tribute to JLGB for taking on the provision of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for the Jewish community. Thanks also went to Shmuel Davidsohn of Chaverim Youth Organisation who helped the boys complete some of the activities.

Later, students spoke about volunteering and skills they had learned in order to gain the awards.

Charity shops don’t want your rubbish Ohel Torah officially opens

Karen Morse, manager of The Charity Box shop on Cheetham Hill has got a job on her hands that she could well do without - sorting through other people’s rubbish.

The charity shop on Bury Old Road provides a vital source of income for The Fed’s community services. Run by Karen, her deputy Cathy Hill and a team of enthusiastic volunteers, the thriving business nets an annual profit for The Fed of approximately £40,000, through the sale of good quality, new or used, clothes, accessories and household items.

Karen explains, “By and large, we receive fantastic stuff, mostly from private donors, but also from some businesses that send us brand-new perfect “overs” or slight seconds.

But recently we’ve been inundated with things that are

unsaleable. Some came in from a recent Sunday Shop Drop when donors dropped bags of goods off at a local venue, and some were left at the back of the shop.

We’ve received broken security lights, urine-stained bedding and battered toys with essential parts missing.

Sorting through the bags is very time-consuming and discovering they contain rubbish is so demoralising. Cathy and I literally wanted to cry when we

saw some of the things people sent us. And then we have to dispose of anything we can’t sell and hire skips to do so. It actually costs The Fed to get rid of other people’s rubbish!

I want to emphasise that the majority of people give us goods which are in brilliant condition but there are some people who need to think a bit more carefully about what they give us”.

NY teenage trip of a lifetime Seder at Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary School

CTeen - the fast growing global Jewish youth organisation - hosted a four-day event in New York drawing in a record breaking 2,500 youngsters to the Big Apple.

The 10th annual International Shabbaton was organised by the Chabad Teen Network.

An inspirational weekend included a traditional Shabbat experience at Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in the heart of Crown Heights.

A Torah completion ceremony took place in Times Square prior to the CTeen Choice Awards at Brooklyn Pier 12.

The jam-packed closing ceremony included guest performances by Jewish rapper Nissim Black and Gad Elbaz.

The ‘Transcend the Tide’ Shabbaton theme empowered teens to overcome Jewish identity challenges in public.

And the message resonated among teenage students who have made Judaism a priority through involvement in CTeen’s.

Dear Rabbi, Why do so many Jews who are otherwise not observant, keep Pesach?

I think it is such hypocrisy that the guy who has a cheese-burger at McDonalds won’t be seen with a morsel of bread in his mouth for eight days. Isn’t it better he starts by keeping other things first and to stop fooling himself?

Yakov Dear Yakov, Ouch! Pesach is about reaching out to all four sons – even the rebellious one, so easy on the attitude.

Yes, it’s true, celebrating Pesach is a central mitzvah in Jewish life that seems to capture the attention of one and all alike. Notwithstanding the hassles involved – and let’s be honest – there’s a lot of hassle involved – still, people who might

King David tells us how his heart is ‘excited,’ and compares his tongue to the pen of a ‘skilful scribe.’

King David was a prophet of Hashem and could see into the future, as clearly as if it were yesterday. Our psalmist proudly waxes lyrical about the brilliance of the Mashiach, by saying, ‘You are more handsome than other men, charm is poured upon your lips, therefore G-d has blessed you for eternity.’ The Meiri explains this to mean that his dynasty will last forever.

However, because as the Radak explains, before the new era of peace is ushered into the world, there will first be the terrible war of Gog and Magog, King David now urges Mashiach to ‘gird your sword upon your thigh,’ as he takes on the wicked nations of the

otherwise not be all that observant find themselves completely absorbed and enraptured in the whole Pesach ordeal.

There’s a logic to this: Pesach marks the birth of our nation.

Without the Exodus there would be no Jewish people – and even if there was, we would be at best a nation defined by slavery and persecution. We might have eventually been emancipated but we would walk through life with a persecution complex. It is precisely because of the Exodus – because of the Pesach story, that notwithstanding the persecutions endured through the ages, we are really defined by something else: The Torah tells us, “You shall tell the Pesach story to your children.” But what kind of story are we to tell? Many stories end with the words: “And they all lived happily ever after.” Now that is not a Jewish story. The Jewish narrative is: “And they kvetch all the way through.”

Mashiach will wage war to prove truth humility and righteousness to the world, not to pursue any personal glory.

felt the hand of G-d a little more than three thousand years ago, feels it again each year on Pesach and is moved to get involved in the celebration - to renew the commitment to work our way back to our promised land.

Process of Torah catch-up?

Dear Rabbi, My son is travelling back to Israel immediately after Pesach and that means he will have missed out on a Torah portion. Can you explain the process of Torah catch-up between our two countries and what can he do to make up his loss?

Chananiah Dear Chananiah, For the purposes of clarity I will explain to readers that we in the Diaspora will be celebrating the final day of Pesach on Shabbat hence we will read the special festival reading for the day. In Israel, where they only celebrate seven days, the last day of Pesach will be Friday and Shabbat is an ordinary Shabbat. Hence they will continue with the normal Torah portion cycle, effectively putting them a week ahead of us. It is not till the penultimate week before Shavuot when we encounter one of the “double portions” – Behar Bechukotai – that we will read them together and in Israel they will read them spread over two weeks, thus resulting in us both reading the opening portion of Bamidbar (Numbers) on the Shabbat preceding Shavuot.

One question that arises is why we wait until those particular weeks to bring ourselves back into sync when in fact there are several double portions beforehand and we could do so sooner. The answer lies in the reason we have double portions in the first place. This is in order to satisfy the four basic rules mentioned in Code of Jewish Law about the distribution of portions throughout the year. In particular, the first two are: that the Shabbat before Pesach has to be the portion of Tzav (second portion of Leviticus) in a regular year or Metzora (fifth portion of Leviticus) in a leap year. The other condition is that the penultimate Shabbat before Shavuot must be Bechukotai (the final portion of

Leviticus) because of the “admonition” contained therein, and always separated by the portion of Bamidbar (the first portion of Numbers) just prior to Shavuot.

Since Tzav is the 25th portion in the Torah and Bamidbar is the 34th, and since in most regular years there are only six Shabbatot available between Pesach and Shavuot, there are therefore generally three sets of double portions during this time.

The 16th century Turkish sage R. Yissachar ibn Susan suggests that if they were to split any of the earlier double portions in Israel then that might suggest they are less important than the Jews living outside Israel in that they have to change their usual practice for the sake of the Diaspora Chutznikim as they like to call us. So they wait until the last possible opportunity (in this instance the weeks before Shavuot) and then split that double portion because at that point there’s no choice - they have to do so in order that Bamidbar will be read on the Shabbat before Shavuot.

To resolve the issue for those coming from the Diaspora to Israel after Pesach, many make a special service on the first week back creating an unusual triple portion!

This would consist of the portion being read that week in the Diaspora (Shmini – 3rd portion in Leviticus) which he would otherwise be missing, combined with the standard double portion of Tazriah Metzorah which they would then be reading in Israel. Long and painful, I know. But hey they don’t get sermons and besides it’s a small price to pay for the privilege of spending Pesach with the family and living in Israel.

How do we spell ‘matzot’ in Hebrew?

This is a question which is not as straightforward as it might appear.

Fascinatingly, there are two different spellings in the Torah. Sometimes, matzot appears with a vav ( ) and sometimes without ( ).

Remarkably, in one passage both spellings are featured just three verses apart. In Shemot 12:15 the Torah states: “For seven days you shall eat 31 unleavened bread ( )”. Then (12:18), the Torah continues: “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening [i.e. at the Seder] you shall eat unleavened bread ( )”.

We learn this principle from our Patriarch, Avraham. After a decisive battle in which Avraham and his allies were victorious, the King of Sodom offered him the spoils of battle, which were rightfully his. As a man of deep principle, Avraham declined, declaring, “I refuse to take even a thread or a shoelace or anything that is yours, lest you claim that you made me rich”.

A Tip for Passover Rabbi Shlomi Wise of KLBD reveals what lies behind the Kosher for Passover Tiptree jam production.

T

HE small North Essex town of Tiptree is practically synonymous with the Wilkin & Sons jam factory.

The Wilkin family began farming at Tiptree in 1757, and have been making quality preserves since 1885. The company first received a Royal Warrant from King George V in 1911, and this prestigious honour has continued with the company presently holding the Royal Warrant as purveyors of Tiptree products to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Many of the fruits used to make the Tiptree products are still farmed locally, and there is a strong emphasis on maintaining the quality which the company has always been known for.

Fruit is inspected and prepared by hand and cooked in small batches using traditional, copper-bottomed pans. The original fruit sieving machine for jellies (clear jams) is still in use after more than 120 years!

Products are made in a nut-free factory to time-honoured and cherished recipes; they remain free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

Fruit crops include strawberries, raspberries, mulberries, Morello cherries, rhubarb, damson, Victoria plum, greengage, quince, and the curious medlar.

Where items cannot be grown locally, quality fruit is purchased from trusted sources, such as Seville for their marmalade oranges. Tiptree’s signature fruit has to be the Little Scarlet

strawberry, a tiny wild variety that is very difficult to grow and harvest, but it is worth it for the depth of flavour that it provides.

Tiptree is probably the only place in the world where this fruit is grown.

There is a great focus on the relationship between the company and the surrounding environment. Every member of staff is part of an Employee Benefit Trust, giving them a keen interest in the future of the business. The Tiptree farm is LEAF Marque accredited (Linking Environment and Farming), recognition that they work sympathetically with the environment and encourage links with the local community.

The Kashrut Division of the London Beth Din (KLBD) is proud to have a long-standing relationship with the Wilkin & Sons company. Their interest in kosher certification was initially only for Passover jams, however, over the past couple of decades, the demand for kosher certified products has increased dramatically and now Tiptree jams and marmalades are kosher certified all year round.

Tiptree is currently sold in over sixty countries, and as well as being kosher certified in the UK, there is much interest from abroad, particularly America and Eretz Yisroel.

The range of products has greatly expanded too. Besides the standard jams, you can now buy more unusual ones such green fig, loganberry and pineapple. There is a wide

selection of honeys, curds and sweet spreads that has become kosher certified in recent years, and the range keeps growing.

These developments are, in no small measure, due to the cooperation and professionalism of the Tiptree staff.

The KLBD insists on the highest standards of kashrut in order to grant kosher certification. Each ingredient and processing aid is checked to ensure its suitability. When necessary, the equipment is kashered thoroughly to meet KLBD standards. These measures can be a little daunting to staff who are unfamiliar with this practice,

however, the emphasis on quality control at the company and the good will between Tiptree and the KLBD keeps things running smoothly.

The production of Kosher for Passover jams by Wilkin & Sons had lapsed in recent years, but due to the increasing demand from customers, a special batch production was arranged for Passover 2018. In preparation for this, a number of ingredients and processing aids had to be obtained from alternative sources.

Pectin, a water-soluble fibre, occurs naturally in most fruits, with the highest concentration in the peel or skin; its presence causes the setting of jellies and preserves, and gives jams their spreadable consistency. When producing jams from fruits which do not have a high pectin content, extra pectin in powdered form is added to the cooking pans. It is important to ensure that the pectin powder used is suitable for Passover as pectin is often precipitated with ethanol (which can be wheat

derived) and often standardised with dextrose (also potentially problematic for Passover). The acidity regulators added to the jam - citric acid and sodium citrate - can also be grain derived. Finally, since some of the Tiptree products manufactured throughout the year contain chametz, for example, marmalade with malt whisky, a full kashering of the factory is essential before kosher for Passover production can take place.

To oversee the 2018 production, two KLBD rabbis travelled to the factory for a 6am start in order to supervise the kashering of the production line from beginning to end, and to verify that the Passover approved pectin was the one mixed into the tank, together with the specially purchased processing aids. The rabbis remained onsite until all the jars were sealed and labelled as KLBD - ‘Kosher for Passover’.

General points regarding medication for Passover: • In general all solid dose tablets and prescribed capsules are in order for Passover use. Wherever possible, tablets or capsules should be used rather than liquid preparations as the flavouring may contain wheat-derived ingredients. This is a tasty savoury omelette made with thinly sliced potatoes, tomatoes, olives and red peppers.

It is perfect for a substantial breakfast and easy to slice and to carry in a lunch box for a chol hamoed outing!

INGREDIENTS

• 250g baby new potatoes –thinly sliced • 1 small red onion – peeled • 1 red pepper- cored and roughly chopped • 12 cherry tomatoes, cut in half • 12 black olives – cut in half • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 6 eggs • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook the potatoes in boiling water for about 5- 8 minutes until just soft. Drain and set aside.

Slice the onion into rings.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil into a 20cm heavy based frying pan.

Add the sliced potatoes and the onions and cook over a low heat for about 10 minutes until the potatoes are just golden.

Remove from the heat.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs together. Season well. Add the chopped red pepper cooked potatoes onions tomatoes and olives.

Line the frying pan with baking parchment paper.

Heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil in the frying pan. Pour in the potato mixture. Cook covered gently for 10 -12 minutes until the mixture is set.

Slide out of the pan onto a chopping board and cut into wedges.

JAMES PALMER – URBANCRAZY For most people, a trip to the seaside usually means paddling in the sea, making sand castles or even having a picnic, but for James Palmer a visit to the coast led him to come up with the idea for a new business. As he explains: “I was looking for a career change and happened to be in Hastings with my friend Jon Angel. It was pouring with rain, but we noticed that there were a number of crazy golf courses that amazingly were still all exceptionally busy. It started us thinking about why such a popular activity that appeals to adults, children, men and woman alike can only be found at the seaside, and whether there was a way that we could bring it to even more people?”

Though miniature golf courses are now very popular and commonplace in towns and cities across the UK, in 2002, at the time that UrbanCrazy was established, it was a very new concept. They are considered to be pioneers in developing this market, and they have since gone on to be market leaders in the world of minigolf.

hire fun, unique portable minigolf courses for any occasion from parties and corporate events to weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs or family fun days. The courses can be used at any kind of venue, both indoors or outside and is a great activity for guests. James believes that one of the reasons that minigolf works so well is that it is all-inclusive, meaning that anyone can join in.

He adds: “No matter what your age, skill level or golfing ability, anyone can play minigolf. When we do events, it always gets people’s interest, and everyone is keen to have a go. It’s a great ice breaker for parties and everyone that plays has a lot of fun.” Their courses have also been hired for school events, as well as being featured on numerous television programmes, including A Question of Sport, Blue Peter and The One Show amongst others.

into practically any space, shape and size area. This also means that they can be laid out in endless configurations and can even be used to spell out names or make shapes, such as hearts which are particularly popular for weddings. The courses are also able to be customised with photographs, logos and messages and can fit in with different themes.

UrbanCrazy enjoy being able offer their clients the chance to have something special and unique, and James along with his team create bespoke obstacles to fit specific requirements. They enjoy the challenge of producing new and interesting designs and over the years have been involved in making some unusual obstacles and hazards including a wedding cake, a surfboard, and even a ten pin bowling themed hole. In 2016, as part of the celebrations for the Rio Olympics they created a range of sport-related themed holes including an athletics running track and long jump, which were sited at JW3 for the whole of the games.

Always keen to put their unique spin on other games, as well as minigolf, they have also created their own range of themed table tennis tables which are also available for hire at events under the name ‘PongCrazy’. Their designs include a giant fried egg with a yolk for a net, a golf course (complete with rough bunkers and holes) and even a mesmerising, angled mir-

rored table which takes the game to a whole new level, and is a challenge even for the most competent player. Their newest addition to their range of games is ‘DartsCrazy’. A giant dartboard which is laid on the ground, and can be played in a variety of ways from throwing bean bags to putting or chipping balls to score.

UrbanCrazy have also been involved in creating permanent miniature golf courses at locations around the country, even transforming the back garden of a couple in North London into a course for their grandchildren. James adds: “It was a great project to work on and their grandchildren thought it was great fun to have their own golf course. The couple really loved what we created for them, and it meant that they never had to mow their lawn again, so that was a bonus!”

For anyone looking to start their own business working in the events industry, James believes that it is important to find something that you enjoy and have a passion for, to ensure that you do it to the best of your abilities. This will then reflect in how you deal with your customers. He adds: “If you are enthusiastic and take pride in what you are offering, your clients will see this and have confidence that you will make their event really special.”

James is very much involved in the business on a personal level and deals directly with many of his cli-

ents to help and advise them about the best options for their individual needs. “We like to be able to help our customers by supplying them with creative, unique high quality products that will make their event have the wow factor. We always get great feedback from people who have hired us, and often have repeat business with the same clients hiring us for regular events.”

The company are also responsible for supplying miniature golf related equipment to many of the crazy golf, adventure golf and minigolf courses and traders both in the UK and internationally, making them a true one-stop shop for all things minigolf. For James, the thing that he loves most about his role, is the variety that comes with it. He adds: “I love that every phone call that I take can lead somewhere different.

I can be involved in designing a 12-hole themed course for a client in Dublin one minute, and then discussing a wedding or bar mitzvah booking the next.”

Two football fixtures escape ‘Mini Beast from the East’

League and cup football was all but wiped out on Sunday with only a couple of matches surviving freezing, inclement wintry weather.

FC Team mastered a snowbound pitch and sub-zero temperatures in a 7-0 rout against Catford & Bromley to continue their Division Two promotion charge.

Rob Sanford marked his first game of the season with a hat-trick to head the scoring accolades in a comprehensive victory.

Richard Salmon, Marc Hecht, Adam Rones and player-manager Mitch Young, who made five goals, also hit the target.

Young thanked Catford for helping get the game on and the match official for allowing it to go ahead in difficult conditions.

As for the game, he was delighted with his team’s performance.

“Considering the conditions some of the attacking football was very nice and to score seven goals was very pleasing,” he said.

“Congratulations to Rob on his first game of the season to score a hat-trick. Having his experience at the back and obvious goal threat from set pieces will be very

welcome in the final few games of the season.”

Young praised left back Jamie Breslaw’s calm performance and midfielder Adam Rones’ use of ball. Noting that Marc Hecht bossed the game in midfield, he said striker Richard Salmon was a constant threat in attack.

Young added: “This was a great warm up match for our cup quarter final (versus Bayern Mincha on Sunday).

“We are looking forward to putting our wits against the favourites for the competition.”

In the only other match to beat the mini-freeze Faithfold B edged a tight Barry Goldstein Trophy cup encounter in a penalty shoot out against Hertswood Vale.

Hertswood opened the scoring in normal time when Elio Elia pounced on poor defending on three minutes.

The home team had chances double the lead but Chaim Bordon equalised with a 25-yard free kick to sentd the match into a shoot out.

Like the match, it was no surprise the shoot out went into sudden death. And Faithfold prevailed when Josh Martin slotted home the

crucial spot kick for an 8-7 shoot out triumph.

“We were delighted that both teams managed to get the game on despite it being the coldest I have ever been in goal,” said Faithfold boss David Garson, who saved two penalties in the shoot out.

“Penalties are a great way to win when you are a manager and a goalie to boot.”

Jacob Emanuel of Hertswood Vale praised both teams for clearing the pitch and the referee for ensuring the match went ahead.

“Sadly, the snow was about as interesting as it got,” he said.

“After taking the lead disappointingly we dropped off and allowed Faithfold to control the ball in midfield.

“Faithfold equalised with their only shot on target in the first half, but in all fairness, it was quite a free kick.

“The second half we wasted a few chances to take the lead, but in fairness to Faithfold, if it wasn’t for two excellent last ditch challenges from Alex Trup and Ashley Hirschberger we may have found ourselves behind.

“We were on top for the last 20 minutes but with only 11 players available and a number of key players missing, we never got the second goal we deserved on the balance of play.

“There was no time for extra-time that would’ve been ideal so ensued a long penalty shootout and the new ‘ABBA’ system caused much confusion.

The way Salah effortlessly rolls the ball round his opponent with such ease is truly immense and I can’t see any player beating him for the player of the

season award at the end of the season (with the exception of good ol’ Jonjo Shelvey of course).

With seven games left to play, Liverpool look to have consolidated their place in the top four and can also look forward to a Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City, which is the most appropriate platform for Salah to produce a masterclass on, once again.

Crystal Palace had been winless in their previous seven league games, including losing their last four, and had conceded 15 goals during that period. So you could expect Roy Hodgson to not be so confident going into the must-win match against Huddersfield at the weekend.

Palace were on top throughout and opened the scoring in the first half through James Tomkins’ closerange effort as Huddersfield failed to deal with Luka Milivojevic’s corner, earned by the excellent Wilfried Zaha. A Milivojevic penalty secured the win for the Eagles.

In my opinion, I cannot see Crystal palace going down due to the experience of the gaffer and not

only that but the star quality of Zaha should keep them up.

With Palace staying up, I can only see Southampton and Stoke joining West Brom to drop down to the Championship. Although with Huddersfield having a tough run of fixtures, including the likes of Manchester City, Everton and Arsenal and especially having to face Newcastle United next week, they could also potentially drop back down.

For me, it’s to close to call right now!

We learn that a fire must be constantly burning on the altar and it is the Kohen’s responsibility to make sure it never goes out. He must also clean the ashes from the altar every morning.

The laws of the korbanot that were explained in Vayikra are repeated here, this time to tell the Kohen what to do.

Towards the end of the Parshah Moshe initiates Aaron and his sons to become Kohanim. First Moshe put the special garments on and then he poured special anointing oil on the altar and on Aaron. Then he put the special garments on the sons of Aaron. Then Aaron and his sons brought aAFIKOMAN EGG bull as a sacrifice upon the Altar. TO CREATE YOUR VERY OWN JEWISH WEEKLY RECIPE BOOK

tasty Pesach BROWNIES Ingredients: • • • • • •

2 cups light brown sugar 1 cup margarine 3 large eggs 1 tbsp. brewed coffee 3/4cup sifted unsweetened cocoa 1/4tsp. salt

• 1 cup matzah cake meal • 1/2cup finely chopped walnuts (optional)

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 170 C and lightly grease a 9 inch square pan.

2. In a small saucepan, melt margarine over low heat and cool for 10 minutes. (This can also be done in a microwave.)

3. In an electric mixer on low speed, beat eggs and sugar until thickened. Add margarine and mix lightly. Mix in coffee, cocoa, salt, cake meal and nuts. Mix at low speed until just combined.

Spread batter into pan and bake in centre of oven for 25 minutes.

Make sure to not over bake.

4. Cool completely in pan on rack. Keep brownies layered on wax paper in an airtight container in a cool room for 5 days.

It is a Moroccan custom at the beginning of the seder for the head of the household to hold the seder plate over the head of each attendee separately and chant the following, “Bibhilu yatsanu mi–misrayim, halachma ‘anya bené chorin.” This roughly translates to the following: “In haste, we went out of Egypt with our bread of affliction and now we are free.”

The charoset is made out of dates or/and apples and represents the mortar in the bricks used by the Jewish slaves. Jews in Gibraltar actually put ground up brick dust in their charoset!

Parshat Tzav In a Nutshell The Parshah of Tzav ( which translates as ‘command’) continues G-d’s instructions to Moshe regarding the laws of the korbanot (offerings).

These animal and meal offerings were the central feature of the service in the Mishkan (Sanctuary).

G-d instructs Moshe to command Aaron and his sons regarding their duties and rights as kohanim (priests) who offer the korbanot (offerings).

The location of the altar is very exactly defined and is never to be changed and the fire on the altar must be kept burning at all times. In it are burned the

wholly consumed ascending offerings.

The Kohen Gadol (High priest) brought a meal offering each day, half which was offered in the morning and the other half at night.

The kohanim eat the meat of the sin and guilt offerings, and the remainder of the meal offering. The peace offering is eaten by the one who brought it, except for specified portions given to the kohen.

The holy meat of the offerings must be eaten by a ritually pure person, in their designated holy place and within their specified time.

Aaron and his sons remain

News Bites LOCUST SWARMS POSE THREAT TO WORLD CUP PITCHES Swarms of locusts pose a threat to Russia’s soccer World Cup as they could attack stadium pitches and cause a “global scandal”, an Agriculture Ministry official said earlier this week.

President Vladimir Putin is hoping to use the World Cup from June 14 to July 15 to showcase his country as a superpower at a time of frayed relations with the West.

Matches will be played in 12 stadiums in 11 cities.

Pyotr Chekmarev, head of the agriculture ministry’s crop farming department, said the pitches could be targeted by locusts during the summer months.

“One way or another, we have learnt how to deal with locusts, but how do we not fall into a global scandal with locusts this year?” he said at an agricultural event in Moscow.

“The whole world is coming here.

Football fields are green. Locusts love it where there is lots of green.

How would they not come to the place where football is being played?”

Chekmarev said around a million hectares of land in southern Russia was infested with locusts, including around the World Cup host city of Volgograd.

DAPHNE THE DUCK: GIANT INFLATABLE FOUND OFF PERTH AFTER AUSTRALIAN SEARCH A giant inflatable duck could be heading home after blowing away from a beach in Western Australia last week.

Daphne the duck, set to play a part in an annual ocean swimming competition, went missing on 11 March off Coogee Beach in Perth.

After a week-long search, and reported sightings hundreds of miles away, Daphne has popped up not far from where she blew away.

Local Toby Gibb found her on a

fishing trip the day she disappeared.

Mr Gibb said he found the duck at around 06:30 - only an hour or so after Daphne went missing.

He is meeting Cockburn Masters Swimming Club chairman Peter Marr on Wednesday about returning the duck.

UZBEK TRANSPORT POLICE BANNED FROM HIDING BEHIND TREES Police in the Uzbek capital are now banned from hiding behind trees “and other objects” while carrying out transport checks, it’s reported.

The Tashkent police department issued the decree on 12 March, as part of a string of ongoing transport reforms in the country.

Uzbek citizens can now report complaints on the government website about such offences. If proven, a police officer could be demoted, fired, or lose their pension.

Transport officers are also set to be issued with new uniforms, following criticisms within the coun-

try that the blue-green uniforms make them appear invisible, the Vesti.Uz news website reports.

As an additional measure, they will be issued with hand-held video cameras to “help in the [country’s] anti-corruption drive and fight bribe-taking on the roads”.

Local media are embracing the reforms, saying that officials’ hiding behind buildings or trees has become a problem in the country.

There have been many reports of complaints in recent years from drivers alleging that this method of catching people breaking traffic

rules amounts to entrapment.

Fergana News says that there have been cases where officers have suddenly rushed out onto the road from their places of concealment, thereby “creating dangerous situations”.

Pre-Pesach can be exhausting, so make sure to help out as much as you can around the home and when it hits 9pm start heading up to bed, so you can be asleep by 10 the latest.

2. Take a pre-Pesach nap: On eruv Pesach, take your shower earlier than usual and in the afternoon try to catch a 2 to 3 hour nap.

This will really give you more energy for the evening.

3. Bring on the light: If you’re feeling a little tired during the seder, go near a light and stare at it for a bit, this should kick your brain into hight alert and minimise an

5. Stay Active: During the seder, try not to lean on the table and get sluggish. Try shokeling when reading the hagaddah which will keep your energy up.

6. Cold water: Drink very cold water and rinse water over your wrists and face if you feel sleepy to renenergise you.

7. Keep entertained and don’t make it dull: Make your seder more interactive.

Use props, games, songs and have a stimulating discussions around the table.

BY CHAYA SANDLER The sun rose and the shadows fled. Fleeing, scurrying, all but one.... a shadow moved until it was under the drawbridge. The guards dozed and the shadow paused. Chuckling softly he withdrew their keys and before the sun’s rays could strike him, he was gone. ....

Soft dark curls fluttered in the gentle breeze as she leaned against the window ledge.

“My lady?” The maid gently roused the young princess from her reverie. The princess looked up, sighed softly and raised her head, blinking back the wetness on her dark lashes.

“He may yet return my lady.” The princess gave the ghost of a smile.

“Perhaps.” She glanced with quiet, furious longing at the hills surrounding the palace once more. “Perhaps not.” With that she gave a tired smile, “thank you.”

“Your father awaits.”

“If that were all....” ...............

“My lord?” The king raised a finger wearily but did not turn, did not rise. The crown glittered amidst the darkness of the kings war robes, of the warriors cloaks, of the black mourning shrouds draped around the room like ghostly curtains, sheets of wind that rattled the dust.

“Come.” It was more of a mutter, but it was no less a summons.

“”My lord, why the shrouds, why....” Now he faced her. He grasped her arm.

“The writing is on the walls, it is screaming from the heavens, are you deaf?! Your brother does not return, his legion does not return, they are lost.”

He dropped her arm, and his voice. “We are lost.”

“No.” “This is no time for delusions. Half our army is gone. Our best warriors ... i am too old and we cannot last the siege another week..”

“But our storehouse-” “Burnt! Last night, the guards slept and someone got in.”

“Father -” “No. I am sending you away.”

“But-” “Listen to me. You will slip out at first light, at the ports of Forehaven a ship awaits.

You will travel to our allies and my kingdom shall not be all lost.” The steel in his eyes brooked no argument. So the princess stood and turned. As she walked out, she whispered sharply, “your son would not have given up so easily.” There was no reply. .....

Dawn broke, shattering on the hillsides, spilling golden rays down the fields. Three hooded figures made their way across the

valley, their hoof boots seeming to beat out a tired, defeated cry. ..............

“In your dreams young sir.”

“We’ll see about that.” The boy lunged at the man, who neatly sidestepped, his blade flashing as he ripped the boys shirt and disarmed him.

“Your sword would make a pretty trophy.”

The boy on the floor sighed. “Perhaps I shall keep it. As an incentive. When your swordsmanship improves, you may have it back.”

The boy thumped his fist on his torn trousers.

“I suggest you find a needle. There’s a good wind tonight. We sail to Forehaven, where many treasures are to be found there. I have word that the king of Kashmir is spiriting away his fortune. Well if he doesn’t want it,” the pirates eyes’ gleamed, “then it shall be ours.”

“But how will I fight without a sword?!” The boy sprung to his feet.

“How indeed... well, I’m sure it shall be an intriguing experience.” The boy scowled. The captain laughed and walked away.” Oh, but of course,” he half turned back, a smirk on his lips, a challenge in his eyes. “You could always hide in the brig.”

“I have just escaped war and death sir.”

“Ah but there are pirates my lady.” The princess smiled thinly.

“Then they shall meet their match I am sure.” The captain stared at her, then he gestured behind him to the waiting ship.

“We must hurry whilst the winds are good.” The princess did not even attempt a smile as she boarded the ship. And she didn’t look back. ...............

“Ship to starboard cap’n” The Captain laughed.

Amy Braier

Amy Braier, Director of the Pears Foundation, was honoured with a special award recently recognising her commitment to the Jewish community. The JFN JJ Greenberg Memorial Award honours young foundation professionals, aged 40 or under, working in grant-making who have demonstrated significant leadership within the Jewish community. The award was created in memory of Jonathan Joseph Greenberg who tragically died in a traffic accident in 2002 aged just 36, and is presented annually to an individual, who like JJ himself, demonstrates the highest of Jewish values through words and actions, in all aspects of life.

Amy was unaware that she had even been nominated for the award by her colleagues, until she was contacted a few months ago. As she explains; “When I found out about the award, it was a complete surprise, but a really lovely one as well. It is great to receive the recognition not only for myself but for the

work that the Pears Foundation team does and on behalf of all of our partner organisations, and I am both thrilled and humbled to have been chosen.” As the 15th recipient of this award, Amy is only the first to be from the UK, which makes it an extra special achievement.

Pears Foundation is an independent British family foundation established by brothers Mark, Trevor and David Pears, all of whom serve as Trustees. It aims to use some of the resources of their family’s property company, The William Pears Group, to help support and fund organisations and projects both within the Jewish community and the wider charity world.

As full time Executive Chair, Sir Trevor Pears works closely with Amy, and also recognises her contribution to the foundation in light of this award, he comments: “When Amy started over 10 years ago we were still in the early years of developing strategy and structure. She built the professional infrastructure and identified some of the key areas that we would ultimately pursue in terms of our grant-making priorities. Her contribution is immeasurable and I am glad that she has been recognised in this way, as her quiet and humble manner means she rarely receives the accolades that she very much deserves.”

Pears Foundation supports a wide range of organisations and has around 250 partners worldwide that it works with.

Many of these are supported on a long term basis, allowing Amy to develop strong working relationships with them, which is something that she really enjoys. “Being involved with these organisations over a long period of time means that we can develop a good understanding of their needs and the challenges they face and really see how our support helps them to grow and develop. It also allows us to gain a good understanding of how we can continue to support them in the future.”

In her role as Director, Amy oversees the Foundation’s grantmaking and operations and also leads on its Holocaust education and higher education work. The Foundation was involved in establishing the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, as well as the Pears Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism and the UK Task Force on issues relating

to the Arab citizens of Israel.

She has also been involved as a Trustee for Holocaust Memorial Day. Prior to working for the Pears foundation, Amy worked for the Greater London Authority and the Parliamentary Committee against Anti-Semitism, and it was through this involvement that she met Sir Trevor Pears who was one of its supporters.

“At the time, he was looking for someone to help grow his foundation, and when I spoke to him and heard his vision for the British Jewish community, I knew that I had to be part of making it a reality.” Over ten years later, she is still as passionate and enthusiastic about the work she does, and says that she feels ‘really lucky’ to have found a job that she loves so much. She adds: “I am really privileged to work with so many amazing people, both as colleagues and through the organisations I work so closely with.”

Amy feels that winning this

award will give her even more motivation to continue the work that she is doing. “It is a great honour to receive this award, and I feel that this will spur me on to work even harder for this amazing foundation. When people ask me what my role is here, I say that I am kind of like the conductor of the orchestra.

Preparing for Pesach can be a bit of a headache, but with this A-Z list, hopefully this year will be hassle-free: Indigestion – eating rich food late at night can sometimes have an effect on your digestion. Peppermint tea is a natural way to help with this, so make sure you purchase this as part of your Pesach shop.

Jewish Weekly – Don’t forget to grab the Pesach edition next week before yom tov.

Kids – if you have children get them involved in helping to clean the house. It will teach them about what is involved and also take the pressure off you.

Look in unusual places – it is often surprising the places that you will find chametz.

Mah Nishtanah – whoever is the youngest in your family might need a few practice sessions before Seder so try going through it as much as possible - in the car or even before they go to bed.

Nosh – Stock up on plenty nosh well in advanced to make sure you have enough snacks for all the yom tov and your chol hamoed trips.

Over-buying – try to avoid spending more than you need by sticking to your shopping list.

Paper plates – if you are having a lot of guests over the Pesach period, it might be worth using paper plates and plastic cutlery for some of the meals to cut down on the washing up!!

The Holocaust and photography Yad Vashem has opened a new exhibition “Flashes of Memory – Photography during the Holocaust”.

Visual documentation is one of the major factors in shaping historical awareness of the Holocaust. Alongside archival documentation of the period’s events and the research on these records, visual documentation has contributed significantly towards knowledge of the Holocaust,

influenced the manner in which it has been analysed and understood, and affected the way it has been engraved in the collective memory.

The camera, with its manipulative power, has tremendous impact and far-reaching influence. Although photography purports to reflect reality as it is, it is essentially an interpretation of it, since elements such as worldview, values and moral perception influence the choice of the object to be photographed as well as how it is presented. Different agencies took photographs during the Holocaust. For the Nazi German regime, photography and film-making played a crucial role in propaganda as a means of expression and a tool for manipulating and mobilizing the masses. This kind of documentation attests to Nazi ideology and how German leaders sought to mould their image in the public eye. Conversely, Jewish photography was a component in the struggle for survival of the Jews imprisoned in the ghettos, and a manifestation of underground activity that testified to their desire to document and transmit information on the tragedy befalling their people. The Allied armies, who understood the informational value of photographing the camps they liberated, documented the scenes revealed to them, bringing in official photographers and encouraging soldiers to commemorate the Nazi horrors as evidence for future war crimes trials and in an effort to re-educate the German

population. Who can forget the words of Richard Dimbledy as he entered Belsen in April 1945 and its support pictures.

This exhibit presents a critical examination of documentation through the camera lens, focusing on the circumstances of the photograph and the worldview of the photographer, while referring to the Jewish photographers’ different and unique viewpoints as direct victims of the Holocaust.

In 2017 it was ranked the best London airport by Which?. It is only 50 miles from Golders Green, perhaps a little further than Stansted (42 miles), certainly closer than Gatwick (60 miles around the M25) and very much more user friendly than Luton (30 miles). The parking is right outside the terminal and vastly cheaper than any of the aforementioned.

By train there is six services per hour from Liverpool Street that also stops at Stratford, with the walk at the other end to the terminal covered and less than three minutes. And if the need is to overnight the delightful Holiday Inn has an excellent rooftop bar where you can watch the planes, and enjoy a drink.

The airport never seems to be busy.

It handled just over one million passengers last year (Luton 15m) with the largest aircraft easyJet’s 180-seat Airbus A320. Check-in on the ground floor, up the escalator and into the lounge with a large selection of shops all run (except World Duty Free) by the airport operator, Stobart, a spinoff from the ubiquitous transport company. There is the Skylife executive lounge too for those with the right passes or on payment (from £15.95).

No air bridges but plenty of help available for those less mobile. And on the return the luggage is off very quickly.

For summer 2018 London Southend will serve around 70 points with Amsterdam (up to three flights a day) easily the most popular, with Alicante next up. Plenty of Spanish destinations and Paris too. Dublin is intriguing as it also provides a virtually seamless connection to New York and a number of North American destinations via a US border control at the Irish capital’s airport. At the other end you are landside with no formalities to complete. No flights to Tel Aviv yet, with the furthest destination Tenerife South.

New for 2018 is Air Malta to Cagliari, Catania and Valletta. If you fancy a English Lake District holiday this summer you can fly non-stop to Carlisle.

joyofkosher.com Nothing says TA-DAH like a standing rib roast. The meat is so juicy and richly flavoured, you can roast the meat, carve it and serve it either warm or at room temperature.

INSTRUCTIONS

• 1 3-bone rib roast (about 7-8 pounds) • Kosher salt • Freshly cracked black pepper • 1 cup prepared horseradish

• Several whole heads of garlic • 6 large shallots, unpeeled Pan Sauce • 2 cups chicken stock

PREPARATION

1. Preheat oven to 230 C. 2. Generously season roast with salt and pepper (you want each bite to be seasoned).

3. Rub entire roast with prepared horseradish (go for it!)

4. Place standing rib roast in a pan that will accommodate the whole roast, no bones overhanging.

The roast can be laying down with the meat facing upwards. Add garlic and shallots to the pan.

5. Roast in prepared oven for 45 minutes. Reduce the heat to 175 C and continue roasting for another 30 minutes or until the internal temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pan sauce 1. Squeeze garlic and shallots, out of their papery shells, into a sauce pan. Add chicken broth and pan juices. Whisk briefly to break up the shallots and garlic.

2. Reduce over medium heat until it coats the back of a spoon.

How to Carve a Standing Rib Roast Cut meat from the bones and hide the bones for yourself when everyone goes to bed! This is the best part!

Slice the meat, lengthwise into thin slices. Transfer to a platter.

8 eggs, separated 1 & 1/4 cups sugar 5 Tablespoons cocoa 2 & 1/2 Tablespoons potato starch

Preheat the oven to 180° C. Use a large 10 “tube pan.

Separate the eggs, putting the yolks into one bowl and the whites into another.

Beat the white until nearly stiff, then add into it half the sugar, continuing to beat all the while. Turn off the beaters and set the whites aside.

Beat the yolks until thick, add in the remaining sugar and beat until creamy. Add in the cocoa and potato starch and beat just another minute or two until they are incorporated. Turn off the beaters.

Fold both mixtures together by hand. While folding, if the batter seems too liquidy, you may add in a bit more potato starch. Pour this into your prepared tube pan.

Bake for 50 -75 minutes, checking to make sure it does not burn. When done, remove the cake from the oven to a wire rack. Leave it to sit for 15 minutes.

Prepare a large piece of foil, lined with one or two paper towels on it.

TIP! Leave this to cool in the pan, balanced on its SIDE so it does not fall out of the pan, nor fall down in the pan!

After it has cooled somewhat for the first 15 minutes, slide a long, sharp knife around its edges, as well as the innermost edges. Carefully lift up the pan and flip it over onto the prepared foil/ paper towels. Remove the pan. Leave the cake to sit until it is more cooled, then wrap it up gently and freeze until the day of use.

ERIC GRAUS 1927 - 2018 There’s many a spy story with a scene in a London street where the proprietor of an antiques shop is involved in a lot more than meets the eye. Eric Graus, who died last week at the age of 90, might have fitted well into that scene. President of Likud-Herut UK and the proud holder of the State of Israel Fighters Medal, his was an important life in Zionist history.

Eric was born in the Slovakian town of Bratislava. His family emigrated to England in 1939 where he soon became active in Zev Jabotinsky’s Zionist Revisionist Movement and in 1947 he joined the ranks of its associated underground movement. With the special role that was assigned to him in the critical months before independence, he developed a strong fealty to his commanders, Menachem Begin and Yitzchak Shamir, both future prime ministers of Israel.

As a young man Eric was introduced to the London antiques

market and by 1952, he met and married Suzy Adler, a refugee from Budapest. Whilst raising a family he acquired an impeccable reputation for fairness and honesty in the antiques trade, from London to the far East, and soon moved up to a Bond Street address.

In April 1970, during a UK visit

by Moshe Arens, Eric formed the British Herut Movement, with a manifesto to advocate for the settlement movement in Judea and Samaria and take the lead in activism on behalf of Soviet Jewry.

Two years later he invited Begin (then opposition leader) for his first visit to London. This provoked universal outrage with Jewish MP Gerald Kaufman loudest in the calls to deny an entry visa to this ‘terrorist’. While Eric’s people managed to enlist the help of Hendon MP Peter Thomas to help clear the visa application, the Jewish establishment was not so easy. No United Synagogue or other communal organisation was

willing to provide its premises for Begin’s welcoming dinner. It took a caterer with an Auschwitz tattoo, Mrs Lisser, to come forward and offer her ultra-orthodox Kedassia Restaurant in New Oxford Street in honour of Mr Begin. And so it was, as Eric fondly recalled so many times, that when Mr Begin later returned to London as prime minister, he insisted that only Mrs Lisser should have the honour of catering for him at Downing Street.

In the 1970s Eric and his comrades, Joe Gellert and Malvyn Benjamin, were at the forefront of activism against the Soviet Union for its imprisonment of Jews wanting to emigrate to Israel.

From loudspeaker vans blasting protests outside the embassy, to mice being released at the Bolshoi Ballet and the picketing of Russian tourist offices, there was no peace for the Soviets in London.

Eric was one of many protestors arrested for disorderly conduct

and Malvyn’s lawyering skills were regularly called upon to get people bailed out.

Eric’s greatest joy was Likud’s surprise victory in the 1977 elections, bringing Menachem Begin to power after 30 years in opposition. He renamed his movement Likud-Herut and, as its president, he staged annual celebrations of Yom Yerushalayim which was his favourite yomtov of all. It was especially sweet that Eric lived just

long enough to witness the historic and outspoken recognition of our eternal Jewish capital by the President of the United States.

Eric is survived by his dear wife Suzy, son Jeremy and two daughters Aviva and Nomy. He now rests in the land he loved and among the people he fought for in a very special way.
