IDF CONSIDER GAZA INVASION 31 MAY 2018/ 17 SIVAN 5778

Israel’s military have hit back hard in response to 180 missiles from Gaza, targeting communities in southern Israel into Wednesday morning.

Fighter jets pounded over 60 terror targets across seven sites in the Gaza Strip belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants including military compounds, munition storage warehouses, naval targets and terror headquarters.

In a clear statement that Israel will not tolerate the incident, Justice minister, Ayelet Shaked, told Hebrew-Language Radio Darom that “all options” were on the table regarding the latest growing crisis, including a possibility that Israel could re-occupy Gaza.

Shaked said it was a “miracle” nobody was killed, adding that Israeli fatalities could lead to war.

She also noted officials must make the “right move at the right time”.

Shakad explained: “Should we comprehensively ‘defeat’ Hamas? When you say that, it means bringing down the Hamas government, which would mean whatever it means.”

Asked whether that could reoccupy the area, which Israel left in August 2005, Shaked responded, “That option is definitely on the table. We have to face the truth.”

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, scheduled to meet Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street next week during a whistle-stop European tour, warned Israel would respond with “great force” to the bombardment exacting a heavy price to anyone who tries to attack it.

Most of the dozens of missiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome defence system in what is the largest bombardment of missiles since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

The IDF also confirmed that a “terror” tunnel beneath the Kerem Shalom Crossing was destroyed.

The tunnel, beginning in the Gaza Strip, extended into Sinai and then 900m inside Israel.

This is the tenth tunnel in the area destroyed since October.

There was also machine gun fire into border communities where thousands of Israelis ran to bomb shelters as sirens sounded as tensions escalated along the IsraelGaza border.

Six Israelis, including three soldiers, were injured as shells landed near a kindergarten, in a school yard while parents and children were present Sderot and in open fields.

As of Wednesday midday, no Israelis or Palestinians had been killed in the latest incident to rock the area.

Israeli security sources believe the latest round of violence is over, after reports of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas via Egyptian mediators.

The IDF said it would respect a ceasefire, provided missile fire from Gaza ended.

During Tuesday, Hamas reportedly contacted Israeli leaders pointing to Islamic Jihad for the attacks.

But Israel though made its position clear - Hamas rules Gaza so is responsible.

Minister Aryeh Deri warned Hamas that strikes would hit “painful and sensitive areas”.

Intelligence minister, Yisrael Katz, told Army Radio tensions with Gaza would worsen over Tuesday evening.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced a naval barrier off Zikim beach around the Strip would block infiltration from Gaza into Israel by sea.

The United States called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon held the Palestinian leadership accountable for what is happening in Gaza.

He added: “The shells and rockets fired at our citizens leave no doubt to the true intentions of those who incited, encourage, and even paid for those ongoing riots.”

Governments around the world condemned the attack.

Jack Rosen, President, American Jewish Congress voiced concern at the latest round of hostilities.

“There is no justification for militant provocation and civilians must never be targeted in this way,” he noted. “The AJC remains committed to Israel’s security and the safety of the Israelis living under constant missile attacks from the Gaza strip.”

Domestically, Richard Verber of the Board of Deputies condemned the rocket attacks.

“These were fired at innocent civilians,” he said.

“This is the attempted murder of Israeli children, pure and simple.”

The sustained rocket fire came after the Islamic Jihad threatened a response to the IDF detonating an explosive device adjacent to the security fence in Gaza on Sunday.

tank targeted a military observation post after troops discovered the device intended to harm patrolling soldiers.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the fatalities.

An IDF spokesman said on social media that no injuries to IDF soldiers were reported.

“We will not tolerate attacks against us from the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu said at his weekly Cabinet meeting.

“The army and security forces are working around the clock to protect the State of Israel, Israeli citizens and Israel’s borders.”

Ofir Gendelman, of Netanyahu’s office, added: “This boobytrapped wire cutter was placed by Palestinian terrorists on the GazaIsrael border fence, in order to kill IDF soldiers on patrol.

“The IDF detonated the boobytrap and has hit an observation post of the Islamic Jihad terror organisation in the Gaza Strip in response.”

Earlier, IDF troops had identified four Palestinians infiltrating Israel from the Gaza Strip and set a tyre on fire.

The suspects fled back across the border after IDF troops arrived at the scene and fired towards them.

An IDF spokesman noted: “The suspects stayed in Israeli territory for about a minute.

“During the infiltration, the suspects hurled a firebomb that burst into flames and placed a tent with the caption ‘The March of the return. Returning to the lands of Palestine.”

“Any assertion that these protests are peaceful is disgraceful. On the contrary, the right of Palestinian citizens to protest peacefully has been hijacked by a terrorist group devoted to inflicting suffering regardless of the cost, including human life, with total impunity.

“Hamas routinely uses its citizens as cannon fodder, but yet it is Israel who is denounced.

“It is critical to bring these facts to light in the international community, for the sake of both Palestinian and Israeli lives.”

The escalating violence is sure to feature as WJC holds a two-day executive committee meeting in Prague on Monday.

Israeli PM to visit Berlin, Paris and London next week Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Europe next week to discuss Iran with German, French and British leaders.

“I will discuss with them how to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and how to stop Iranian expansion in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said. He will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Tuesday and Wednesday, before meeting British Prime Minister Theresa May in London on Thursday.

Israel’s Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman will meet his Russian counterpart in Moscow today to reach an agreement for Syrian regime forces to take up positions close to the Israeli border in southern Syria.

The agreement will allow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces to return to the border area in exchange for Russian guarantees that Iranian and Hezbollah forces will be kept away. Director of Military Intelligence Maj. Gen. Tamir Heiman and Zohar Palti, Director of the PoliticalSecurity Office in the Defence Ministry, will also travel to Russia for the meeting.

The Moscow meeting follows what Israel’s Channel 2 News described as a diplomatic breakthrough in a phone call between

Lieberman and Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu on Friday.

Two thousand Iranian soldiers are estimated to be in Syria, many of them members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). A further 7,000 Hezbollah fighters and approximately 30,000 fighters in Shia militias from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq have also been fighting on the side of Assad in the Syrian civil war.

Israel’s National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat has been in Washington since Monday for talks with his newly appointed US counterpart John Bolton, also to discuss Iran, following the US decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement.

Ben-Shabbart and Bolton have discussed renewing a memorandum of understanding regarding a joint policy towards Iran, as well as the establishment of working groups to handle various aspects of the Iranian threat.

One such working group, Israel’s Channel 10 reported, was to deal with Iranian activity in Syria, another with Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions, a third with Iran’s ballistic missile programme and a fourth team will oversee preparation for any escalation by Iran or Hezbollah.

World Jewish Congress & UNESCO unite to combat anti-Semitism

World Jewish Congress has held a productive meeting with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay to combat racism and anti-Semitism.

Chief executive Robert Singer spoke of WJC’s recent initiative with Chelsea FC, Yiddish International Center in Vilnius and annual ‘We Remember’ campaign, which UNESCO took part in this year.

Azoulay highlighted actions undertaken by UNESCO including guidelines it will publish.

The discussion also focused on future cooperation including an interactive website dedicated to Holocaust education due to launch November 2018 in eight languages.

In other news, WJC United States has joined a coalition of concerned religious and human rights organisations in writing to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urging him to fill the position of the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.

The letter addresses threats facing Jewish communities around the world.

Rabbi Joel H. Meyers, WJC US chair, said an appointment would set an example to other countries that anti-Semitism and racism

would not be tolerated and was necessary for governments and civil society to combat anti-Semitism.

“Our allies in Europe and elsewhere lack an important partner in this fight,” he noted.

Rabbi Meyer added the posting could bring wisdom, knowledge and diplomatic expertise to freedom loving countries standing up to hatred and bigotry.

It would also demonstrate the United States’ commitment to this crucial endeavor.

Prince Charles enjoys Israel’s 70 concert at the Royal Albert Hall

Prince Charles joined 2,500 party-goers as Israel celebrated its 70th Independence Day at the Royal Albert Hall.

Compared by TV judge Rob Rinder, the event, organised by the Jewish Leadership Council, UJIA and Israel Bonds, represented Israel’s diverse culture.

Prince Charles sat in the Royal Box alongside Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev.

Government minister David Lidington told a packed audience that modern-day Israel was a global leader, tech superpower and a provider of aid to foreign disaster zones.

He added that Britain would defend the Jewish state’s right and obligation to defend itself.

The minister noted a need for reconciliation with Israel’s neighbours and said the UK wouldn’t shy away from asking tough questions.

Noting Anglo-Jewry was a dynamic community, Lidington added that antiSemitism had no place in society.

In other addresses, Jewish Agency chairman and former refusnik Natan Sharansky recalled the role of British Jews in the Soviet Jewry campaign and pledged that Israel would not allow anyone undermine the bond that exists between Israel and the Diaspora.

Introduced by JLC chair Jonathan Goldstein, Ambassador Regev thanked the community for the celebration and said the attendance of

He added: “The partnership between Britain and Israel is strong and growing stronger. It’s creating prosperity and security for citizens for both our countries.”

After wishing mazeltov to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, he looked ahead to the visit to Israel of the Duke of Cambridge.

“We Jews haven’t had royalty of our own since biblical times so we are naturally excited by this visit,” he said. “All of Israel will unite in welcoming Prince William with a very warm shalom.”

Theresa May, in a message for the event, said the UK stood side by side with Israel as an ally and as a close friend with shared values.

Globally, events have taken place to mark Israel’s landmark year.

World Jewish Congress has a number including a video project where Jews from 50 nations of all ages, faiths and backgrounds combined to sing Israel’s national anthem.

Hundreds of videos were filmed and submitted to WJC, who put together a historic first to express solidarity, appreciation and commitment to the State of Israel.

Countries participating included Albania, Colombia, Philippines, Britain, South Africa, Russia, Paraguay, Mexico, Ivory Coast and New Zealand.

WJC noted the “Jewish Tikvah” (Jewish

Hope) was among a series of projects planned.

President Ronald, S. Lauder said, “Israel is an integral part of Jewish identity and will always be our home, no matter where we choose to live in the world.

“Jewish life in exile was sustained by 2,000 years of hope and the dream that we would one day return as a free nation to the Land of Israel.

“It is the same hope that fuels the State of Israel today as it grows and prospers in the realisation of Theodor Herzl’s vision as a country of innovation on its ancient and historic land.”

Marie said: “This is the right move by King’s College London. Together with our Jewish communal colleagues we have been in an ongoing dialogue with Professor Byrne to address some of the issues facing Jewish students at his and other London universities.

We are pleased that the university has joined the many bodies that have already adopted the definition, including the UK Government, the Scottish and Welsh Governments, the National Union of Students, and hundreds of local councils.

“The IHRA Definition makes it easier for authorities to identify and understand the nature of contemporary antisemitism.

“If universities are serious about addressing antisemitism and making Jews feel welcome at their institution, they should follow KCL’s example and adopt the Definition.”

Ladies’ Moonlight Walk raises £20,000 for Kisharon

Over 60 women braved torrential rain and electrical storms to support Kisharon on Saturday evening for the charity’s annual Moonlight Walk in London, raising a total of £ 20,000 for the charity’s work in support of children and adults with learning difficulties.

The sponsored 15km walk through the streets of Central London saw women from 12-76 years of age set off from Baker Street on a route taking in London landmarks including The Mall, Southbank and St Paul’s.

Spirits were high, despite the challenging weather conditions, as the participants were led on the walking tour through London’s historic streets, before arriving back at Baker Street at 4am on Sunday morning.

Chief Executive of Kisharon, Dr Beverley Jacobson said: “Kisharon’s Moonlight Walk is one of our most special events, made even more so this year as London’s streets were lit up by lightning along the way! There can be nothing more admirable, empowering, heartwarming and symbolic than seeing women in our community rise to the significant challenges presented on the night to help the young people with Learning Disabilities Kisharon supports, who face even greater challenges in their daily lives.”

The Moonlight Walk is one of a number of unique challenge events Kisharon runs to

raise the more than £2m contributed by the community each year towards their day-today running costs. Other challenge events being held this year include the Ben Nevis Winter Challenge and Mont Blanc Marathon.

Langdon’s ‘Sweet’ contributions

The Skies the limit Shammai Rottenberg, aged 21, is celebrating achieving success without limits, after he was offering permanent employment by The Grove Spa, Hertfordshire, with the help of Kisharon’s Adult Employment Programme. Shammai, who is set to graduate from Kisharon’s Community College in Hackney in July will continue working extended hours for the high-end spa, after a successful trial this year which saw him work part time 2 days a week, in addition to going to college four days a week.

As part of the trial role, which saw Shammai working as part of the Housekeeping team pressing and folding laundry, Shammai experienced travelling to work independently. Speaking of his new role, which will allow him to try his hand in different departments at The Grove, Shammai said he was “very happy” with the permanent job offer, which he described as “very nice”.

Shammai honed his customer service skills working one day at week at Kisharon’s Equal Gift Shop in Temple Fortune, North London, where he learned to answer the phone, use the till, take customer orders and package them up for the boutique’s regular customers.

Manager at The Grove said: “It is a pleasure to have Shammai working within the Housekeeping team and the wider Grove family; he really has been a breath of fresh air since he started with us in February.”

Speaking of the success of Kisharon’s Adult Employment Programme, the charity’s Chief Executive Dr Beverly Jacobson said: “The feedback we have had from employers is that having someone with learning difficulties in the working environment improves things. Suddenly people are more sensitive to each other and are more willing to help other people. It breaks down barriers.”

Langdon students, this week, made sweet packages for families that charity GIFT support. During the activity, they wore aprons that Yavneh College Students had made for them as part of a GIFT educational activity.

GIFT work together with Langdon students every half term providing handson activities for them to get involved in as part of their Langdon Brady Scheme.

These GIFT activities give the students an opportunity to think about and give to others.

First Ever Jewish Art Fair Held in London On Sunday 27th May Seed hosted the first ever Jewish Art Fair at its centre in Edgware, giving over 400 people the chance to buy affordable Jewish art.

The 38 artists who exhibited their work generously donated 25% of their profits to be split between Seed and the event organisers Arts Therapies for Children – a charity that provides 10 Jewish primary schools with qualified and experienced arts therapists in order to help children with emotional or behavioural difficulties.

T h e

artwork on sale included paintings, textiles, etchings, woodcarving, ceramics, glasswork, embroidery, photography, polymer clay, jewellery and mixed media artwork.

One of the attendees said: “I can’t believe how much hidden talent there is in the community!”

Dalia Davis, Director of Operations at Seed said: “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to collaborate with Arts Therapies for Children to put on this memorable event at Seed. The art on display was of a very high calibre and we were pleased to see so many happy customers.”

Tim Anders, CEO of Arts Therapies for Children, said: “The response to the art fair was simply overwhelming! I was amazed by the way that the event brought together so many hundreds of people all representing different parts of the Jewish community.

Numerous

people asked me when we would be putting on the next event, and some artists who had never exhibited in public before were bowled over by the response to their work. We are now planning our next event, which will be even bigger and better.”

Mad Hair Day helps to raise awareness for Chai Cancer Care It’s not often that you get permission to dress up for school or work, but when it’s to fundraise for Chai’s ‘Mad Hair Day’ – it’s actively encouraged! On Friday 25th May, children from several schools and nurseries across the UK that we support, adorned their hair with weird and wonderful styles, wigs and bows, paying £1 each to raise awareness and vital funds for Chai’s ‘Chai in Schools’ Programme.

Michael Sobell Sinai School, Naima Jewish Preparatory School, North West London JDS, Mosaic JPS, Yavneh Primary, Tracy Lewis Childcare in London and Broughton Jewish, North Cheshire, King David Nursery Manchester, Brodetsky Jewish Primary School, Leeds Jewish Free School, Deborah Taylor Nursery in the North West all took part in the annual event, which launched last year.

This year ‘Mad Hair Day’ was also opened up to adults, with Tapuach in Hendon, Brackmans Bakery & Coffee Shop in Prestwich

and Haydn’s Kosher Meats in Whitefield all joining in the day of fun.

Over the last 4 years Chai has seen a dramatic rise in the number of young parents diagnosed with cancer turning to them for support.

With this in mind, the ‘Chai in Schools’ Programme was originally designed to give teaching staff the strategies to support children going through a cancer diagnosis in their family. With the specialist knowledge Chai has within its Children and Teenage Service, they understand the complex issues that children are experiencing and work closely with primary and secondary school teachers across the UK. Chai also offers teachers access to a counsellor as it’s a difficult time for them emotionally too.

Acting as a central point of contact, Chai liaises between the school and the family to co-ordinate all the needs of the child, tailoring support to the type of request received. It may come from the school or from the family and could be at any point

MFS are one of the first schools nationally to have done this and over the last few weeks, children, working in their house-teams, have been working with teacher-mentors to record up-to-date and Jewish themed versions of classic fairy tales such as: The 3 Little Pigs; Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty & the Beast.

These entertaining stories have been recorded and backed with a lullaby soundtrack, making them the perfect bedtime audio stories.

Proceeds of sales will be going towards 5 different communitybased charities. To add an element of healthy competition within the school, the house-team with the most downloads will be the winner of the school’s own internal competition.

Gila Nachshen, teacher and group mentor said, ‘The children have been tremendously enthusiastic and motivated during the production of the audiobooks. It has been an excellent experience for the staff to work together with the children in

this charitable project.’

Enough is Enough Dear Editor,

We as a community have been shocked by the anti-Semitism coming out of the Labour party which mobilised the community to protest ‘Enough is Enough’. I fear we have to now use that same slogan for some members and leaders of our own community.

On Wednesday 16th May, a few dozen young people in London recited Kaddish for those killed in the violent riots in Gaza, organized by Hamas whose stated goal was to breach the border fence, cross into Israel and murder as many Jews as possible. By Wednesday it was known that the vast majority of those killed were Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists as made clear by officials from those organisations. How can Jews use the holy kaddish prayer to mourn the dead Hamas operatives? It is beyond offensive – it is despicable.

Remarkably one spokesperson at the London rally said “When Palestinians stand resolute on the Gazan border demanding their freedom and their right to return, they are not committing acts of terrorism, they are performing a mitzvah.”

However, you may say, what can we do? We know we have radical fringe elements especially amongst the young. The problem is that these were not just any young people, they included members of the current leadership of certain Zionist Youth movements. How can the community continue to invest heavily in such organisations whose leadership can participate in such a ceremony?

One of the attendees is due to lead Israel tour for one of these youth movements. How can someone who says Kaddish for terrorists be expected to inspire and excite our young people about the State of Israel? Israel is an oasis of civilization in the midst of a desert of savagery. That is the lesson we need to teach our youth.

We need to be inspiring the next generation to be proud Jews and proud Zionists – how can we go on allowing such leaders to pollute our young people’s minds?

The community needs to insist that it’s Zionist youth movements create young Zionist leaders, not self-haters who loath Israel and what it stands for.

In response to Reform Judaism’s Open Letter Dear Editor, Following the Jewish communities almost unanimous disgust towards the ‘Kaddish for Palestinians’ event in central London two weeks ago, Reform Judaism’s leaders have issued, albeit belatedly, a statement distancing Reform Judaism in any official capacity from the demonstration.

The letter asserts that “as leaders of Reform Judaism we deliberatly chose not to attend” and that “we are certainly not shy of saying what we think in public and had we wanted to have been there... we would have been.”

The letter, however, sugests the contrary. These Reform leaders certainly seem too bashful to properly explain what was so problematic about the event and why they themselves “deliberatly chose not to attend.”

These Reform leaders certainly want to distance Reform Judaism and RSY-Netzer from the demonstration yet have failed to provide their reason as to why. This absence of an explaination leaves us, to speculate, with two possibilities. Either, contarary to their self-claimed confidence they are indeed too meek to express their opposition to the demonstration, maybe as this would mean coming out against some of their most enthusiastic and supportivd members; or, secondly and perhaps more sinisterly, maybe their statement was merely a PR stunt-- cheaply attempting to redirect the repungence felt by the Jewish community at large towards people mainly associated with Reform Judaism and RSY-Netzer who indedd recited Kaddish for the killed members of Hamas.

One thing, however, is clear. Despite the letter’s assertion that those who attended the demonstration were “from across affliations in the Jewish community”, this distinct Israel-hatred is far more pervasively held by those affliated with Reform Judaism than those belonging to the more traditional, Orthodox communities. A great many members of Reform Judaism, posses a worrying detachment from, and show disgust and contempt towards tbe Jewish state and the army that seeks to defend it.

These leaders of Reform Judaism conclude their statement by telling us that they are “happy to enable respectful and candid conversations” about Israel. Yet before encouraging such discussions they surely have to bear the troublesome duty of getting their younger members to appreciate Israel and to have a more positive connection to it. If, however, they do not wish to assume this task than at least they should not disassociate themselves officially from the results of what such inaction will produce from among their own youth, namely an event as grotesque as this.

Kaddish for Palestinians Dear Editor, Last week, thousands of Palestinian civilians’ stormed the protective border fence that separates Gaza from Israel as a demonstration against the USA for moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel’s capital city of Jerusalem. 56 of them were killed by the IDF while protecting its border. Some of them were children and babies. The Palestinians set tyres on fire to create a smoke screen; they used slingshots and threw fist-sized rocks over the fence at the IDF soldiers positioned there to defend Israel and its citizens. The Palestinians were not there for a picnic or a family day out.

Just because these “martyrs” were not wearing military uniforms, but were dressed as civilians, does not transform them into innocent bystanders. All of them had come to the front line and were proactive in waging war against Israel on that day. They brought with them their children and babies to the boarder of a war zone.

Most of us will have seen on numerous TV documentaries on this conflict that children growing up in Gaza are taught in their schools by their teachers, from a very young age or even from birth by their parents that Israel is evil and must be destroyed and that it is a Muslims obligation to kill Jews wherever they can.

As Jews we have learnt to exist and to continue living our day-to-day lives without too much disruption despite the constant threats spewed out by the Palestinians and their sophisticated P.R. and marketing machine.

We are currently witness to an “ultra orthodox” Jewish sect known as the Neturah Kartah who believe that Jews have no right to live in Israel, as we are not religious or holy enough and have not earned the right to live in the land yet. They believe that the right time for us to receive this inheritance is when the Moshiach takes us there.

On the other hand, the Torah is very clear in its scripts, that Hashem intended for us to inherit this beautiful land flowing with milk and honey; he promised it to our Forefathers and Moses and their descendants on numerous occasions throughout the writings of the Torah as the land that B’nei Yisroel would inherit.

Last week a group of British Jews said Kaddish for the fallen Palestinians. I don’t know why they did this, as it is not a requirement for a Jew to say Kaddish for a non-Jew. Personally I feel that it was not completely an anti Israel act, rather a badly misguided one as I know that one person who attended but did not say Kaddish comes from an extremely pro Israel family and is a regular visitor to Israel and a lover of the country. It may have been an act of supporting the underdog borne from English mentality.

In the Torah, Hashem reprimanded the Jewish people when we celebrated a victory and the deaths of our enemies, telling us that we shouldnt rejoice because those people had also been created by G-d in his own image.

Saying Kaddish may have been a noble gesture by these British Jews, but it was also very misguided. Did they think that they could visit the graves of these “heroes” in Gaza in order to say Kaddish for them without being physically torn to pieces by the friends and families of those “heroes”? Did they also assume the role of Chevra Keddusha to tend to the dead before they were buried? Will they visit the grieving families to share their grief?

I would like to ask this “Minyan” that said Kaddish for those that would happily have murdered them, their parents, their brothers, sisters and their children, will they say Kaddish just the once or for a month or a year, and even more importantly, will they ever say kaddish for any of the Jews that were murdered by these terrorists?

In addition, the recommendations threaten the very existence of our schools denying our rights to provide an education according to our ethos. From September 2019, it will be Ofsted who will ultimately inspect the implementation of those recommendations in our schools thereby adding another impossible layer to their inspections.

United Synagogue Appoints Richard Verber as Communications Director The United Synagogue has announced that Richard Verber is to become the organisation’s Director of Communications at the start of July.

A longstanding member of Golders Green United Synagogue, Verber is currently the Head of External Affairs at World Jewish Relief as well as being the outgoing Senior Vice President at the Board of Deputies. He has previously worked for the Union of Jewish Students and University Jewish Chaplaincy.

With professional and lay roles built on outstanding communication skills and an excellent knowledge of the Jewish community, he will be an invaluable addition to The US’ senior team.

Following the announcement, Richard Verber, commented, “I will be sorry to say ‘farewell’ to World Jewish Relief where I have spent six happy years, but the prospect of joining the United Synagogue as Director of Communications is tremendously exciting. The US is vital to Jewish life in the UK and I look forward to building its reputation by engaging with its members and the wider community in a vibrant and dynamic dialogue.”

Over 5000 enjoy Generation Sinai Over 5,000 children, parents and grandparents came to Seed’s Generation Sinai sessions in 22 Jewish primary schools across the UK to learn together during the week before Shavuot.

The topic of this year’s Generation Sinai was Tzedakah. Seed created two colourful and engaging booklets for parents and children to work on together – one for Key Stage 1 children (Years 1 and 2) and one for Key Stage 2 children (Years 3 to 6). The content included a range of sources to read, activities to complete and questions to answer. Families were also given a game to play and take home called “The Giving Game”.

In conjunction with Generation Sinai, Seed ran a competition called #TheGreatDebate giving kids the chance to win one of five prizes - a Kindle Fire, a scooter, a Garmin Vivofit Jr and two £50 Smiggle vouchers.We asked them to consider the question: If you had £100 to give to charity, would you:

a) Give £100 to one charity, b) Give £1 to one hundred charities, or c) Split the £100 another way?

To enter the competition, children had to submit a short video of themselves explaining what they would do with the £100 and why.

We were inundated with entries and judging will be taking place in the next couple of weeks.

I joined the JVN ad hoc squad and recently volunteered for Jewish Childs Day Party in the Mall, I also volunteer for Maccabi Fun Run. I am extremely involved in the Edgware Adath Synagogue.

How has volunteering changed your life and how do you think it affects the people you volunteer for?

Volunteering is important to me

My Mum is employed by JVN and through the way she talks about volunteering , I felt extremely encouraged to get involved to help and support some amazing charities and develop new skills.

Historian and Journalist Dies Prestwich Historian and Journalist Dr Yaakov Wise has died at aged 63.

He spent the last several months in and out of the North Manchester General Hospital, and living in Gan Eden and Heathlands.

G-d tells Moshe that they can have a second chance, a month later, on what becomes known as Pesach Sheni (‘the second Pesach’).

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 9:15-10:10 A cloud covers the Mishkan by day, with a fiery appearance at night. The Israelites remain encamped until the cloud lifts, which is the signal to journey on. The duration of time during which the cloud covers the Mishkan varies. G-d tells Moshe to make two silver trumpets to summon the people before travelling in the desert. The trumpets are also to be blown when the nation will be at war, in order to evoke Divine mercy, as well as in accompaniment of communal offerings on Shabbat and festival days (see p.3 article).

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 10:11-34 In the second year after the Exodus, on 20 Iyar, the cloud lifts and the nation journeys from the Sinai desert to the Paran desert. The Torah describes the order of the tribes’ journeying and the different stages of dismantling and erecting the Mishkan. Moshe asks his father-in-law Yitro, referred to here as Chovav, to join the nation on their journey.

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 10:35-11:29 When the Aron (ark) would start its miraculous journey in front of the nation, Moshe would appeal to G-d to scatter His enemies.

The people complain. G-d sends a fatal fire against them, until Moshe pleads for mercy on their behalf. The ‘rabble’ then complain about the manna, which does not taste as good as the food in Egypt. G-d is angered. Moshe says he is helpless to deal with the nation’s complaints.

G-d tells him to appoint 70 elders to assist in leading the nation. G-d tells Moshe that, in response to their complaints, the nation will be given meat for a whole month, until they are sick of it. The 70 elders are appointed and are given prophetic powers.

Haftarah The prophet Zecharia relates a vision in which an angel visits Yehoshua the Kohen Gadol and chastises him, as symbolised by Yehoshua’s soiled garments. The angel also shows Zecharia a menorah and two olives trees to provide oil for lighting it, indicating that our needs are supplied by G-d.

Jewish educators are presented with the often formidable challenge of teaching texts that were written a long time ago and relaying their messages to today’s generation. One issue commonly faced is that texts use words that can be hard to understand. That difficulty is compounded when there is considerable conceptual distance between ideas that were taken for granted at the time the text was written and how we tend to view the world today. What is the solution to this dilemma; how can we remain loyal to our textual transmission whilst effectively imparting relevant messages?

Dayan Yechezkel Abramsky (d. 1976) cited an idea from our sidrah which addresses this dilemma. Moshe is told by G-d to “fashion for yourself two silver trumpets” (Bemidbar 10:2). These would be blown to call the people together and to encourage them to journey onward. The Talmud (Menachot 28b) interprets this verse as follows: “For yourself you should fashion the trumpets, but they will never be used again, since the leader of each generation must create their own”. All other utensils in the Mishkan could be used for centuries, but new trumpets had to be made for each generation (ibid).

Dayan Abramsky explained that this teaches a message to anyone wishing to teach Jewish values: the values require translation, and that includes not only textual translation but also cultural translation. Teaching Torah messages doesn’t just involve translating a text into the vernacular; it also includes relating concepts to today’s world by illustrating ideas with relevant examples and showing how these messages are eternally important. Just as every generation has its own humour, taste and preconceptions, so too each generation requires new methods of inspiring timeless Torah values.

This was the symbolic message of the trumpets.

These were

the leader’s method of calling together the people and encouraging them to move onwards. Each leader used them for the same purpose, but each generation required a slightly different approach. It was the leader’s duty to seek out what the appropriate medium for his generation was, and then to fashion them accordingly.

Dayan Abramsky lived this message. Although he served as a Rabbi and Dayan in very varied contexts, he was skilled in relating his message to his audience. After serving as Rabbi of Slutsk in Russia, he was brought to London, where he became Rosh Beit Din of the United Synagogue from 1934 to 1951. After this, he moved to Bayit Vegan, Jerusalem and taught in Yeshivat Slabodka, whilst taking an active role in the development of Jerusalem. Each of these positions required radically different approaches of leadership. One of the reasons that Dayan Abramsky was beloved to young and old alike was due to his ability to take eternal messages and translate them for whichever milieu he found himself in. This was reflected in the fact that his funeral was attended by over 40,000 people, making it (then) the largest recorded funeral in the history of Jerusalem.

Aspects of Shabbat Part II: The Radiance of Shabbat

by Rabbi David Lister, Edgware United Synagogue It is well known that, as Shabbat begins, candles are lit in the home. There are many explanations for this beautiful practice, and one of them hints at the spiritual purification which Shabbat offers to us every week.

Rabbi Yitzchak, one of the scholars of the Talmud, is quoted as saying that “the sun on Shabbat is a gift of charity to the poor” (Ta’anit 8b). The simple explanation is that the poor are better able to care for themselves when it is warm, so it is easier for them to have a rest on Shabbat in warm weather.

However, there is a deeper meaning to this. The Talmud says that “the only truly poor people are those who are poor in knowledge” (Nedarim 41a). Shabbat is a day of great enlightenment, when the spiritual radiance of the heavens reaches us in a way that is normally impossible. Therefore, the ‘charitable sun’ referred to by the Talmud is the special enlightenment of Shabbat.

The impact of this light is lyrically described in Tehilim (Psalm 104 – see green siddur, p.154): “The sun knows when to go down. You (G-d) set down the darkness, it becomes night, and all the beasts of the forest prowl during that time. The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from G-d. The sun rises, and

they slink off; they return and lie down in their dens.

Then the humans come forth out to their occupations, to do their work until evening”.

There is a subtext here, which is deeper than the plain meaning.

We can take the sun in this passage to refer to the spiritual splendour of Shabbat, and the animals as a metaphor for our various material pursuits. When people deny Shabbat access to their lives, the side of their nature that seeks survival, by earning a living, is able to be in the ascendant.

But when we allow the dazzling beauty of Shabbat to shine into our souls, this inclination abates and is able to stand still. We can stride out into the world as humans fully worthy of the name.

Thus we can actually measure how well we are living the message on Shabbat. If we come into Shabbat still absorbed in our work, we should hopefully leave the day ennobled and focused, better able to rise above the temptations of the culture in which we live and to transform it for the better. By doing this, we are shining with the light of Shabbat.

It is therefore small wonder that the very first action of Shabbat is not a prayer or a drink of wine, but the lighting of a pair of candles. The light of Shabbat is made physical in our homes as a warm, fragile glow, defying and dispelling the gathering darkness, a twin dawn of hope from two miniature suns.

The Jews of England 1066 to 1290 Part 3 - Mixed Fortunes

Under William II, Lombard Hall, Moses Hall and Jacob Hall functioned as Jewish lodgings and colleges of tuition. Rabbis even taught Christian students in their synagogues. Jewish settlement was sometimes restricted to the “Jewry”; one or a few streets. After 1194, Jews could not reside in a town without an ‘Archa’, a registry chest where significant documents were stored.

The most prominent synagogue, the Magna Scola ̧ situated close to the Tower of London, was built by Rabbi Josce of Rouen in the early 13th century. It was probably modelled upon the synagogue in his home town. While synagogues and mikvaot were widespread, for over a century the only dedicated Jewish cemetery in England was outside London’s walls, at Cripplegate (now the Barbican). In 1177, Henry II granted Jews the right to purchase burial grounds beyond the walls of the cities where they lived. This did not help Benedict of York (d. 1189), a prominent Jewish moneylender, who was forcibly baptised and recanted. Neither the Archbishop of Canterbury nor the Jews would inter him in their respective burial grounds.

Initially, religious questions were referred back to Rabbis in France and Europe. Eventually England became a destination for some established Torah scholars. Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra (d. 1167) spent time in London, as did Rabbi Yaakov of Orleans and Rabbi Yom Tov of Joigny, students of Rashi’s grandson, Rabbenu Tam. Tragically, Rabbi Yaakov was murdered in the massacres in London around the coronation of Richard I in 1189. Rabbi Yom Tov perished in the massacre of Jews in York in 1190.

As long as order was kept and taxes were paid, many Jewish communities enjoyed qualified autonomy. Henry II and John both allowed synagogue councils to resolve domestic disputes and pass regulations. Under Henry III (1207-1272) Jews were able to excommunicate those who did not pay their obligations to the Chevra Kadisha (burial society).

other archives that many Jewish women were well educated and worked in business. Some were so prominent that they drew the attention of the King. Licoricia of Winchester prospered as a moneylender using her inheritance from her first husband. In 1242, she wanted to marry David of Oxford, who was still married to Muriel.

Even the King and the Archbishop of York were drawn into divorce proceedings with English and French Batei Din (courts of law). They married in 1242. David died in 1244. The chests containing his bonds were sealed and taken to the Exchequer of the Jews to be assessed.

Licoricia was imprisoned in the Tower of London to prevent her interference. She had to pay 5000 marks to repurchase his debts.

Belia, widow of Petitevin of Bedford, inherited and ran his loan business. In 1261, after her brothers moved into town and tried to take over, Belia took successful legal steps to exclude them from Bedford for five years.

In 1258, Licoricia was again in the Tower, falsely accused of stealing a ring that Belia was sending to King Henry. She was released when her accuser was found to be the guilty party. Licoricia returned to business but was murdered in 1277. Successful Jews sometimes had powerful friends but always had jealous enemies.

Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits (d. 1999) was once asked whether Anglo Jewry was losing the battle against assimilation.

“We are not losing the battle”, he answered, “we have not yet even begun fighting”.

Today, the battle is on. The United Synagogue is firmly engaged in creating welcoming spiritual homes for every Jew. Another front in the battle against assimilation is fought by the yeshivot and seminaries for ba’alei teshuvah – those who are taking steps towards becoming observant. These institutions enable Jews who have been brought up with little formal Jewish education to explore their Jewish identity in a warm, non-judgmental atmosphere.

As with the other yeshivot and seminaries we have covered in this series so far, the philosophies of different ba’alei teshuva institutions vary. Some are intensely Zionist, others are less so. Some are more open to modernity; others are more circumspect in their approach.

Educational approaches to the exploration of Judaism also vary. Some of these programmes stick to a fairly traditional yeshiva curriculum, in the belief that exposure to Judaism’s traditional texts will gradually create the requisite knowledge of Judaism and attachment to its practice. On the other hand, others create special classes specifically designed to confront the issues that might trouble Jews exploring their faith for the first time. These classes focus on relevant philosophical issues.

One thing which characterises the outreach programmes and yeshivot for ba’alei teshuvah is the particular warmth and approachability of the faculty. The Talmudic sages say that religious teachers should care for their students like parents; the ba’alei teshuvah “world” has taken this idea very seriously. Rabbis and Rebbetzens open up their homes, displaying the very best Jewish traditions of hospitality, with a seemingly endless flow of invitations to their students to spend Shabbat and festivals with their families.

This warm embrace, which is the hallmark of good

Jewish education, is particularly important for ba’alei teshuvah. The process of becoming more religiously observant can be practically difficult and emotionally challenging. It involves changes in diet, daily schedule, relationships and outlook on the world. The Rabbis of the Talmud understood that ba’alei teshuvah should be treated with particular sensitivity.

The depths of this sensitivity were expressed by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (d. 1994). Although he is often perceived as one of the founders of the ba’al teshuvah movement, he argued vociferously against such categorisation. Instead, he insisted that every Jew inherits the mantle of our ancestors equally. When one of his students claimed to be involved in kiruv rechokim – ‘bringing close those who are distant’ – the Rebbe wrote back, “You call them “distant”? What gives you the right to say that you are close and they are far? You must approach each one of them as though you are the King’s servant sent with a message to His most precious child!”

YACHAD AND THE TERRORISTS SCANDAL Dear Rabbi There’s a video circulating which purports to be members of the Yachad organisation saying Kaddish for those killed in the recent skirmishes in Gaza.

Is this something that Jewish people should be doing, as a way of showing our solidarity with mankind and our compassion for civilisation? Or is just an extreme form of liberalism?

Richard Dear Richard It’s neither. It’s what I would call “Kapo’ism.” First, to be clear, I have heard it said that it was not in fact Yachad and that may be so. But to date Yachad has done absolutely nothing to put out a disclaimer, distancing themselves from the antics. As such that could only mean they’re happy to take credit for it. Second, these so-called goodie-two-shoes never dreamed of saying Kaddish or a memorial

for any Jews massacred over the years but are quick to jump at this sort of opportunity. What does that say about them? Furthermore, of those killed in Gaza, many of them were outright terrorists. To recite their names in a memorial prayer and say Kaddish over them, is distinctly not Jewish at all.

I know there are those who take extreme exception to using the term “Kapo.” And I accept, as the son of one the “hidden children” during the Holocaust that it’s a very harsh term indeed. But let’s park the emotion for a minute.

There were Jews during the Holocaust who collaborated with the Nazis. They may have been indirectly responsible for the death of other Jews and that in itself is something which evokes all sorts of negative feelings. But, to be sure, they did what they did, in the hope of sparing their own lives and that of their loved ones. Obviously it was fundamentally flawed but do any of us know what we might have done had we faced similar circumstances? Do we have the

The irony is, such supposed leaders are not part of the solution; they are an integral part of the problem!

Advertorial My family often make fun of me and say I only get excited about cracks and rot. This is completely untrue of course as it is only rot! There are two types of rot, namely wet rot and dry rot. It is important to distinguish between the two types. Wet rot, as the name implies, is caused by excessive amounts of moisture in contact with timber surfaces.

Classic examples would be an external timber window sill which has become bare of paint which has allowed water to penetrate and results in decay of the timber or perhaps a leaking waste under a bath which causes rot to timber floor boards and joists. If left and the bath is loaded with water the floor could in theory collapse!

Dry rot on the other hand is not as the name implies a result of dry conditions but rather less moisture (30% moisture content within the timber) and normally warmer conditions which allow for the growth of the dry rot fungus known as Serpula Lacrymans. This type of rot often occurs where moisture levels may have been high due to a leak and as the source of the leak is abated and areas dry out conditions can become favourable for the dry rot to develop. It is for this reason that damp affected areas should be properly ventilated or a dehumidifier fitted following abatement of any leak. Controlled drying and monitoring of damp levels may therefore be required.

An independent surveyor should be able to assess and advise regarding the extent of remedial works required. Any structural timbers will also have to be checked to ensure they have retained their integrity.

It is therefore important to establish the cause of the dampness which has generated the outbreak of dry rot as this is the key to successful eradication and to help determine the correct remedial works and treatment.

It may also be appropriate to refer the matter of rot infestation to your building insurers.

The insurers will not normally cover the cost of remedial works to abate the leaks such as to repair a leaking pipe but depending on the policy wording may cover the cost of resultant rot remedial works which may be extensive. A surveyor may be able to help with such a claim.

Timbers in proximity to damp affected brickwork may also become vulnerable to dry rot and in particular floor joist ends which are in contact with damp brickwork may become adversely affected by both wet rot and dry rot.

One of the reasons why dry rot has such a fearsome reputation is that it may remain undetected for some time within the structure and may be only apparent as slight rippling of the timber or paint finishes on skirting boards. This is something that an experienced surveyor should notice and so investigate further including checking for dampness using a moisture meter and possibly exposing areas. The type of rot will also have to be identified. Dry rot will produce filaments of various thicknesses ranging from white to yellow to brown reminiscent of Soraas that affected buildings in biblical times. It will also produce fruiting bodies which produce millions of spores searching for new timber to settle and feast on if the conditions are right. The dry rot fungus will eat away at the timber and eventually turn it into dust The dry rot spreads by fine filaments known as mycelium which can even spread into brickwork and plaster searching out further timber on which to feed upon. It is for this reason that a popular method of eradication of dry rot includes removal of affected plaster and treatment of brickwork behind with an anti-fungal spray and then reinstatement of the plaster. This can be quite invasive, destructive and costly particularly if ceilings with ornate cornicing are involved.

BY DAVID SAFFER Team Maccabi GB have announced a number of key posts for the 2019 European Maccabi Games in Budapest next summer.

Laurence Myers has been appointed Futsal chair .

Myers, who recently co-managed Futsal U18 at the Maccabiah Games has been involved in Maccabi football since playing for Brady Maccabi as a child and has been managing Junior teams since 2003.

His love for Futsal began when playing in the Masters competition at the 2009 Maccabiah.

He then moved into managerial positions bringing home silver and gold with the U16s at two games. Myers has also managed ProFutsal London who play in the FA National League.

Speaking about the appointment he said, “I have a huge passion for Futsal and it is a massive honour to have been asked once again to be part of Team Maccabi GB. “To represent your country is always a privilege so I am really looking forward to the opportunity.

“I am confident the management team will all work closely to ensure the squad are better prepared than ever before.

“The athletes can also expect to be working with two of the top Futsal coaches in country.”

On his expectations for Hungary, he said, “Our aim is of course to come home with four gold medals across the age groups but first and foremost I want to make sure everyone has the most memorable experience on and off the court and represents British Jewry with pride.”

Scott Warren has been appointed U16 Futsal boss.

He will be assisted by former Futsal gold medalist Jamie Nagioff.

Having played at two Maccabiah Games and managed at four, Warren described the experience of representing Great Britain

and British Jewry as “something extremely special.”

He added, “Winning silver at the 2013 Maccabiah was the highlight of my career until winning gold in Berlin two years later, beating Argentina, the maestros of Futsal.

“I am excited to be working with Jamie having won gold together in Berlin.”

Nagoiff entered the Maccabi GB scene by captaining the goldwinning U14 football team at the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games in San Francisco.

He won three track and field medals in Denver before switching to Futsal.

Nagioff played football for Wingate & Finchley and the London Lions first team.

His first Futsal experience came playing for Liverpool Futsal Club in National League Northern Division and then ProFutsal London, whom he captained and earned coaching experience as part of their academy set-up. He is currently player/coach of Mill Hill Dons.

Nagioff said, “Fresh off the back of a gold medal at the last European games, I am excited to move into management and help build the next futsal generation. We are all clear that as well as looking for success in Budapest, we are building a squad for the future.”

On the trial process, Warren added, “We’re going for gold and our aim is to select the finest U16 boys in the country. Not many people represent their country and community and I cannot wait to show them what it means to wear the Union Jack Star of David with pride, on and off the court.”

Reuben has spent the last 24 years at London Maccabi Lions.

Before this, he enjoyed a spell at Brady Maccabi and then seven years at Wingate & Finchley.

He possesses a plethora of experience having represented

Maccabi GB at seven international games winning five medals.

Most recently Dan was jointmanaged the Masters over-45 squad at last year’s Maccabiah.

Schindler’s first international games experience came back at the 1991 games.

Since then Danny has won four gold medals, representing Maccabi GB 11 times, including last summer’s Maccabiah as joint Futsal and football chair.

Growing up, he played for Kenton Maccabi and Wingate & Finchley FC before making the switch to London Maccabi Lions in their inaugural year.

“Maccabi has shaped my life having represented Jewish clubs for nearly 35 years as either a player or manager,” Reuben said.

“Some of my greatest memories have come from international games. We are excited to ensure we give the athletes as close to a professional setup as possible.”

Schindler added, “Our managers will be instilling into their squads what it means to represent British Jewry, to play with passion and pride, but to compete surrounded by the Maccabi spirit.

“However, all the players will equally understand the importance of immersing themselves into the games to enjoy everything it has to offer to make memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Scott Ansher, Jessica Tray and Manisha Tailor oversee the junior girls football squad.

Ansher, who co-managed the U16 boys last summer, has been involved in Jewish football for over 40 years, coming through the ranks at Brady Maccabi, from youth to masters, before moving onto management for the club.

Ansher competed as a Masters Futsal player at the 2009 Maccabiah and guided the U16 boys football team to gold at the European 2015 games in Berlin.

Last summer, she brought home a historic silver medal as Lacrosse manager in the sports inaugural Maccabiah Games tournament.

Tray said, “I’m really excited to continue my involvement with Maccabi GB. “My aims for the squad is to have a similarly positive experience, knowing that women’s sport in the UK is growing and building on previous Maccabi GB participation at international games.

“Hopefully this will translate to winning on the pitch, but I’d see the real victory as coming back knowing we’d competed, connected together to our Jewish identity and had a lot of fun.”

Tailor is one of few females currently holding a coaching role as a part time academy coach at QPR, under former Premier League manager, Chris Ramsey.

She has spent 16 years in grassroots football in her capacity as a teacher, working directly in schools and clubs to help engage young people in sport.

Working closely with former Arsenal Ladies and England International Rachel Yankey, she implement a learning programme with Wembley Learning Zone.

In 2017 she received an MBE for services to football and diversity in sport.

Tailor said, “Being part of the journey last year, where Chris and I worked with the women’s team leading them to the Maccabiah Games, was an invaluable learning

experience for me as a coach.

“I am eager to utilise this with the U18’s girls squad in developing them as footballers, but most importantly as people, as we represent our county in the European Maccabi Games.”

Hashem commands the Jewish people to prepare and bring the passover sacrifice. But some of the people are tameh (impure) because they have come in contact with a dead body and so they can’t bring the sacrifice. These people are really upset. So they go to Moshe and say, “Why should we miss out on doing the mitzvah? We also want to bring the sacrifice!” Moshe asks Hashem and He replies to tell them that they will get a second chance. Exactly a month after Passover will be Pesach Sheini--the Second Passover, when everybody who wasn’t able to bring the Paschal Sacrifice in the right time has another opportunity to bring it. This is a very important story because it teaches us that it’s never too late to do a good deed and that we always get a second chance!

Every night, manna came down in the camp, and every morning, the people gathered and ate it. But now, after a year, the people complained that they are sick of eating the manna and want meat. Hashem promises to send them meat and the next day large swarms of quail come over the camp, and the Jews have more than enough meat to eat.

The parshah ends with Miriam who says something bad about her brother Moshe and she gets tzaraat (leprosy). Moshe asks Hashem for her to be forgiven. She has to be outside the camp for seven days, and the Jews don’t travel for those seven days, waiting until she is healed.

As her first yahrzeit approaches, Sylvia Barnett’s family would like to share her story with the readers of the Jewish Weekly, remembering her achievements, her incredible vitality and her zest for life.

Sylvia was born in 1945, just as World War 2 ended and was the first child for Fay and Alex Kopfstein, both survivors of the Holocaust. Fay had come from Vienna and as a girl had fearlessly defied an SS officer in the street and was imprisoned as a result. She was one of those lucky enough to come to England on the Kindertransport, where she met and married Alex, a former internee in Kitchener Camp, and a talented chef originally from the Austria-Hungarian border.

The shadow of the Shoah and the knowledge of her parents’ own experiences, influenced Sylvia’s own outlook inheriting their courage and fearlessness, which shaped her own determination throughout her life.

Gershon, was born in 1951, the family moved from Clapton to Bournemouth to help set up the Cumberland and the Majestic Hotels. There her parents built a beautiful home renowned within the local Jewish community for their constant Hachnosas Orchim (hospitality). Sylvia thrived in this environment becoming an accomplished and polished young woman, privately educated with elocution, music, and riding lessons. Holidays were spent with family in Switzerland and Vienna, where the Oberrabiner (Chief Rabbi) was a cousin, ensuring her language skills were well honed.

From an early age she set her heart on entering the legal profession and she subsequently moved to London to follow her dream. Although pursued by many suitors, it was whilst back in Bournemouth that she caught the eye of a serious Jews’ College graduate, Cyril Barnett, from Willesden, who nurtured thoughts of entering the Rabbinate. After finding a way of getting himself invited to her parents’ house, the pair began dating, and married in 1967 after a whirlwind romance.

Despite Cyril’s plans, Sylvia made it clear that she had no intention of becoming a community rebbetzin as she was determined to become a solicitor. In order to support his wife, Cyril put his own plans on hold and moved into a career in finance. His deep affection and their unparalleled dedication and commitment to each other were obvious and serves as an

As a young mother, having internalised her parents’ somewhat authoritarian and exacting expectations and standards of behaviour, Sylvia applied these to her own children, who have each made their distinctive contributions and excelled in their respective fields; David, as an international lawyer living in Israel with his wife Debby and their five children; and Michelle, founding director of Charity GIFT living in London with her husband Danny and their three children.

In her professional life, she was a highly respected family lawyer, and a rodef tzedek, fearless pursuer of justice and an upholder of truth fighting courageously for things she believed in, particularly the rights of women and children. She took an interest in people and their stories and wanted to help them in whatever way she could. Her abilities in the courtroom, often humbled eminent QCs impressed by her capacity to memorise and hold an entire case in her mind, without recourse to a written note.

Although working in a tough and highly competitive environment, she always made time for those around her, no matter how busy, taking on many roles as a mentor, advocate, counsellor, careers advisor, therapist and tutor, whilst also being a loving and generous mother, sister, sister in law, aunt, friend, and later grandmother.

She showered everyone with her thoughtful and extravagant gifts and was always compassionate and fair, interested in everyone’s personal story, making no judgements.

When her father passed away, Sylvia displayed unparalleled commitment and devotion to her mother, who was able to experience the nachat and joy from her family to whom she was so close.

Sylvia’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable and she enjoyed attending lectures, reading, listening to opera and classical concerts and theatre performances. Her daughter, Michelle recounts, “After my mum retired, she almost took up residence at Ivy House, and later JW3 attending as much as possible, always absorbing knowledge and experiences. Although losing her eyesight, you would never have known, she still continued to be as active as possible, always beautifully coiffed, manicured and bejewelled in her matching outfits, carefully accessorised. No one could believe that she lived with such a disability.”

Cyril, her ever attentive and loving husband, helped her deal with her failing eyesight, anticipating her needs, remaining totally devoted and dedicated to her throughout. Michelle explains, “My dad was always there for her, and her love for life, and vitality never waivered. Although, physically she may have walked in the darkness, spiritually and morally she demonstrated total

clarity of vision and purpose and illuminated a path for all who knew her to tread. G-d, the Source of all strength, must have given Sylvia a very special neshama to fight and overcome so much adversity. She was a larger than life character, with a giving heart, and boundless love and an infectious laugh, that at times I can still hear.”

Sylvia was a truly inspirational and awesome woman, and although she is deeply missed by her devoted husband, children, 8 grandchildren, family and friends - they nevertheless rejoice in her legacy. Yehi Zichra Baruch - May her memory be for an everlasting blessing.

No more mozzies – to keep mosquitoes at bay, put cloves into the skin of a lemon or lime and place them in a bowl.

Bug free drinks – simply stick a straw through an upside down cupcake liner placed over your glass to keep pesky bugs out of your refreshing drink.

Ants – simple sprinkle some ground cinnamon on the ground wherever you see ants and this should keep them away.

BBQ - if you don’t want bugs hanging around whilst you are trying to cook your BBQ, simply burn some sage or rosemary and this will keep them away, whilst also creating a nice herby smell for your BBQ. Ward of wasps – lavender or mint leaves should keep wasps away, and make your home smell nice at the same time

News Bites STUDENT FINDS ‘BIGGEST EVER’ CRUNCHY NUT CORNFLAKE IN HIS CEREAL BOX A student almost choked on the world’s largest ever Crunchy Nut Cornflake… which measured a whopping six INCHES long.

Shocked Hinay Lad thought a piece of the ceiling had fallen into his morning breakfast bowl when he first saw the monster flake lurking inside the popular cereal packet.

But when he contacted makers Kellogg’s to report the creepy lump he was sent four £1 vouchers and was told to buy a new pack.

Hinay, 22, who is studying healthcare at Queen Mary University of London, had just taken his first bite when his dad noticed the Frankenflake.

Hinay said: “My dad saw it in the packet and said ‘what on earth is that?’

“It just looked like a bit of ceiling had fallen into the box.

We were like ‘what’s going on here?’

“It even looks like it could be something from outer space, a bit of meteorite or something.”

It was as big as half the size of the cereal box, which his family bought from Morrisons for £2.68.

Mystery surrounded the identity of a crocodile-like creature after it washed up on a Welsh beach - before a marine biologist provided an answer.

Beth Jannetta was walking her three dogs near Rhossili, Swansea, when she came across the decomposing creature with a long tail and large head, which she estimated to be around one metre long, Wales Online reported.

Bearing a strange resemblance to a crocodile, the 41-year-old placed a photo of the animal on Facebook, with many weighing in with their theories of what it could be.

She said: “I was going for a run with my dogs when I came

across it. It looked like a wellrotted cetacean to me.

“It would be very interesting to find out what species it is.”

Dr Dan Forman, of the Swansea ecology research team at Swansea University’s department of biosciences, has now offered his view on what it could be.

He said: “Its jawline suggests it is like a cetacean whale or a dolphin.

ATLANTA AND THE CHILDREN’S HOLOCAUST ‘PAPERCLIP’ MEMORIAL MUSEUM Malcolm Ginsberg is the Editor in Chief of Business Travel News, a member of the International Travel Writers Alliance, a noted analyst on aviation matters and is seen from time to time on TV and heard on the radio. He is a regular traveller to the United States and notes that the arrival process for most airports has been speeded up since the arrival of ESTA, a new and simple pre-travel visa service.

Atlanta Hartsfield is the world’s busiest airport. But don’t be put you off. Most of the passengers are those connecting within the United States, hence the title “Hub of America”.

In fact, its international flights are quite limited with just three a day from Heathrow (2 x Delta and 1 by partner Virgin Atlantic, plus 1 x British Airways). It’s a fine centre for a week’s (or more) holiday.

Atlanta is a fascinating city made famous by Gone With the Wind, both book and film, writer Margaret Mitchel’s home still standing amongst the skyscrapers. It was the city of Dr Martin Luther King and President Jimmy Carter, the history of both you can follow. It is the home of CNN, Coco Cola, the world’s largest indoor aquarium, and a fascinating Jewish Museum. Jews were involved on both sides of the Civil War. In 1996 it hosted the Olympic Games, remnants which can still be found.

Give yourself at least three days to explore Atlanta and then take off to the pretty countryside. First class accommodation is very reasonable and you will be made very welcome.

It is easy to fit into a touring holiday to include the Blue Ridge Mountains and Nantahala National Park. The Crisson Gold mine is another worthwhile visit.

The highlight of any trip to Atlanta must however be the Children’s Holocaust ‘Paperclip’ Memorial Museum at Whitwell, about 160 miles north of HartsfieldJackson International Airport, half way to Nashville and not far from Chattanooga.

Whitwell Middle School Tennessee

is the home of a remarkable project that from a small beginning has helped to educate a whole generation of children, worldwide. Within its “Middle America” school confines is the Children’s Holocaust ‘Paperclip’ Memorial Museum.

In 1998 Whitwell Middle School Principal Linda M. Hooper asked teacher Sandra R o b e r t s to begin a Holocaust Education initiative that would be the basis for teaching tolerance in a voluntary after-school programme.

Ms Roberts held the first class later that year. Soon the students were overwhelmed with the massive scale of the Holocaust and asked Mrs Hooper if they could collect something to represent the Jewish lives that were exterminated by the Nazis. It was difficult for them to comprehend what six million really meant. In fact, 11 million is the figure now quoted to include the other victims of the Nazis.

Through the internet they discovered that during World War II the Norwegians had taken to wearing paperclips on their lapels as a silent protest against Nazi occupation.

Collecting a target of six million paperclips seemed a way to symbolise the scale of the crime.

At first the project went slowly, as it did not gain much publicity. Students created a website and sent out letters to friends, family and celebrities.

The project began to snowball after it received attention from Peter and Dagmar Schroeder, journalists who were born in Germany during World War II and covered the White House for German newspapers.

They published some articles as well as a

book, Das Büroklammer-Projekt (The Paper Clip Project) that promoted the project in Germany. The big break in the US came with an article in the Washington Post.

Almost all observers note the much unexpected location of the project.

The small rural town of Whitwell has about 1,600 residents, and according to the US census, 97.35% of them white. There was not a single Jewish person among the 425 students when the project began.

There were only five African Americans and one Hispanic. A hundred miles from Whitwell, in Pulaski, Tennessee, the infamous Ku Klux Klan was reportedly born.

The paper clips began to arrive by mail; masses and masses of them.

To date 31m. Celebrities sent them including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. 30,000 letters have arrived, all of them responded to.

The centre piece of the museum is a genuine former German rail car which was used to transport Jews to the camps. Up to 150 people would be forced into such a wagon and then moved from all over Europe to the death camps. This particular unit was discovered in Poland and donated to Whitwell. Getting it from Germany to Tennessee was an involved effort achieved through much generosity and the help of various agencies.

The railcar is filled with 11m paper clips (6m for murdered Jews and 5m for Gypsies, Catholics, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other groups). The monument was uncovered on the anniversary of the Kristallnacht, 9 November 2001.

railcar are 18 butterflies sculptured of twisted copper. Butterflies came from a poem written by a child who lived in Terezin concentration camp in 1942 (I Never Saw Another Butterfly) and the number 18 in Hebrew symbolizes life (in Gematria 18 is the numerical value of the word çé, pronounced

Chai, meaning life). Inside the truck, besides the paper clips, there are the Schroeders’ book and a suitcase filled with letters of apology to Anne Frank by a class of German schoolchildren.

There is an outstanding documentary film about the project. Released in 2004 it has won many awards.

The Waves of War

BY CHAYA SANDLER Recap: The princess and Hamish end up in the dungeons of the neighbouring, enemy kingdom. There she discovers that her brother is not dead and that the army is still intact, but scattered and in hiding. Hamish has an idea.

Hamish licked his lips nervously. If he had thought the princess was regal, her brother was nobility personified… and yet there was a mischievous grin just hiding, waiting behind the passive, calm façade. It didn’t contradict the majesty though. If anything, it enhanced it. There was an air of not caring, of foreknowledge of a disdain of worldly mishaps.

Whatever happened he would still come out on top and whatever you thought, he was still in control, even when shackled in a dungeon. Gosh the Princess had a frightening family.

It reminded him vaguely of the pirates but theirs was a manner tinged with cruelty and arrogance whilst here the overtones were of love and warmth, the air one of responsibility. How different were the lives he saw before him from the one that had led him here; alone, betrayed, helpless.

The Princess coughed authoritarily.

“When you are quite finished pontificating, perhaps you would care to enlighten us with the ingenuity of your cunning scheme?”

“Huh?” The Princess sighed and was

about to retort peasant! When she caught sight of her brother’s reproving gaze.

So she swallowed her pride and bit her tongue. Literally. It actually really hurt.

“I mehent plesesh tesh ush hot you wanted to sigh.”

“Huh??”

“I believe my dear little sister meant that you should speak your mind boy.”

Hamish scratched his head. You would think that with all the money and time and privilege, someone would teach the royals how to speak decent English. Oh well, money couldn’t buy everything he supposed.

“I think that Hamish could help.” The prince narrowed his eyes and creased his smooth brow in confusion – “You are Hamish are you not?”

“Yeah, but I mean the other Hamish.”

“Other Hamish?”

“Yeah, Hamish.”

“I see…” he said in a manner that implied very clearly that he did not see at all and would like to be enlightened now.

“Hamish my pet lizard.”

“You named your pet lizard Hamish.”

“Yes….”

“I see,” he stated in manner that implied that he very much did see and probably more than Hamish wanted him to.

“Anyway… I thought that er, um, well, hear me out…”

The guard peeped through the door, do you know how many people have tried

that one? Oooh, ooh, come here quick, oh please,” he sang in a mild soprano tone,” he’s ill, she’s dying, ooh, ooh quick you wouldn’t want the king to blame you for his death, ooh come,” he suddenly switched to a sharp grunting, “so that we can knock you out and escape! Where’s your imagination! Honestly, you’re locked in a cell for weeks and you can’t even attempt an original idea,” With that, he slammed the peephole. Which promptly broke. The Prince handed it to him. “I’LL take that.” Footsteps were heard and then a thump. Waling with your nose in the air is not very conducive to walking without bumping into things.

The Prince turned to Hamish, “your pirate comrades are indeed there with the

guard.”

“I thought so. The Cap’n won’t let his precious cargo out of sight until he’s got his money.”

“So if they haven’t been given their money yet, it’s probably because the King wants conclusive proof that he has the real princess.”

“So let’s make sure he gets it.”

----------------------------------------------Clink, clank, clink, clank. Chains are rather noisy things, thought the Princess as they led her along the passageway.

Eventually they came to the throne room.

She’d been in this room briefly when they had first arrived. Now she had a chance to study its ostentatious furnishings. Ours is better, she thought snootily.

The she gasped. Next to throne was none other than her vice chancellor.

She nearly groaned. It was always the chancellor who betrays the kingdom….

She hated clichéd stories. Surely reality could do a better job than this! No matter, still, she would have to play her part much better now.

He bored his cold, dead eyes into her and smiled creepily. She felt chills racing down her back. This was not going to work. And she had a feeling that what was going to happen next would not be pleasant.
