Israel has joined world leaders in backing Ukraine's sovereignty over occupied eastern regions by Russian forces and will not recognise a farcical referendum for annexation of Ukrainian territory.

US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said Washington would sanction Russia.

“We are prepared and we will impose additional severe and swift costs on Russia for proceeding with the annexation,” he said. “We will never recognise the annexation of Ukrainian territory

President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to “defend” its citizens

in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

Claims that residents voted for Russia by over 90 percent have been castigated as rigged data.

The Ukrainian government has condemned Russia’s annexation action as “a propaganda show” and vowed to punish organisers, including Ukrainian citizens.

“We do not accept the sham referendum and any kind of annexation in Ukraine,” von der Leyen added, “And we’re determined to make the Kremlin pay for this further escalation.”

The Commission’s latest sanctions package since Putin invaded Ukraine in February must be agreed by all 27 E.U. countries including Hungary, which could prove problematical.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said sanctions had “backfired” on Monday.

In Kyiv, officials stated that Russia’s annexation plans would not change their military objective to reclaim occupied lands, including Crimea.

“The Russian Federation organised a propaganda show,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “Forcing people in these territories to fill out some papers at the barrel of a gun is yet another Russian crime in the course of its aggression against Ukraine.”

Russian state media have reported Putin will deliver a state of the union speech tomorrow in Moscow's Red Square where he may declare Russia’s annexation of the regions. The Kremlin has not confirmed if Putin will appear.

In related news, Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Kornichuk confirmed reports that Russian forces launched over 10

Iranian attack drones at Uman over Rosh Hashanah.

Some 27,000 ultra-Orthodox worshippers, according to Israeli media, attended the resting place of Rebbe Nachman in Uman, which has not been struck by Russian forces.

Prayers miraculously took place in up to 10 synagogues.

Kornichuk reportedly told Reshet Bet, “Ukrainian security forces were organised and worked well. There’s no reason for Israelis to leave Uman for security reasons.

We’re asking for more help from Israel, with an emphasis on military aid. There are requests on Defence Minister Gantz’s desk but we haven’t received a response.”

He added, “Israel needs to equip us with anti-aircraft weapons. This is the time. So far Israel hasn’t done enough. Israel is good at humanitarian aid but we won’t win with bandages,” Israel’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Michael Brodsky, wrote on Twitter that 20 Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the conflict with Russian forces will be treated in Israeli hospitals.

"Israel will receive for treatment 20 Ukrainian servicemen who were seriously wounded during the war," he wrote.

News also emerged from Brodsky yesterday that one million USD of critical medical equipment had been delivered to a children’s hospital in Kyiv as part of the Israeli humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

Brodsky also tweeted that over 30 Ukrainian Righteous among the Nations and their families had been provided with heaters ahead of the winter.

Starmer vows to “root out” antisemitism at conference

Labour leader Keir Starmer vowed to “root out” antisemitism in an address to over 300 people at Labour Friends of Israel’s conference reception in Liverpool.

Labour members and LFI supporters heard from prominent party figures including Starmer, Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

In his speech, Starmer pledged to continue to “root out antisemitism” wherever it shows its ugly face in the party and country.

And he praised LFI’s role in returning Labour to the political mainstream.

“When we go into government, (LFI and its work) will be inscribed on the foundation stone as part of this story and part of this journey, he said.

Starmer wished luck to Labour’s Israeli sister party, led by Merav Michaeli, in the upcoming general elections in November.

“We’re rooting for you,” he said.

Addressing LFI directly, he thanked the organisation for giving the space to judge him on “what I did, not on what I said”.

Starmer made it clear that a remade Labour Party could now face the electorate with confidence thanks to LFI. Campaign Against Antisemitism welcomed Starmer’s stance.

“This Labour Party conference was certainly a positive contrast to those held during Jeremy Corbyn’s tenure as leader, and reflects the progress that has been made in the fight against Labour antisemitism,” said a CAA spokesman.

But CAA warned that Starmer’s “persistent ambiguity” whether he feels the fight is over or ongoing is “troubling” as it was announced at Conference another Labour councillor is under investigation.

However, there was praise for the speed of handling the racist incident.

LFI’s keynote speaker Emilie Moatti, an Israeli Labor Knesset member, attended Labour Conference throughout the week.

Moatti celebrated Labour’s record in government in honouring principles of solidarity and internationalism, fighting racism and antisemitism domestically and supporting the Jewish state overseas. She also called on Labour members to stand with Israeli progressives, stand up for peace, a two-state solution and brighter future for Israelis and Palestinians.

Lammy said it was a “huge honour” to attend as Shadow Foreign Secretary, and work with LFI. “I am a Labour friend of Israel,” he said.

Lammy welcomed the Abraham Accords and noted that protests against the Iranian regime demonstrated “hope that keeps progressive alive”. And he also praised Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s comments at the UN last week particularly his support for a two-state solution.

Reeves said she was “proud” to be a Labour friend of Israel and thanked LFI for standing with the party.

Quakers cancel conspiracy theorist booking

Campaign Against Antisemitism has welcomed Quakers in Britain cancelling a booking for academic David Miller at Edinburgh Quaker Meeting House earlier this week.

Miller was due to speak on Tuesday at a Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign event titled ‘Solidarity with academics under attack: free speech on Palestine’. But Quakers announced on Twitter that it was cancelling the event and have dissociated itself from the controversial speaker.

They noted, “After further consideration this booking at Edinburgh Quaker Meeting House has been cancelled. Quakers in Britain believe that all forms of racism, including antisemitism, are barriers to building a just and peaceful world.”

CAA said it was “revealing” Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign consider Miller an “appropriate” speaker.

CAA have kept the Jewish community informed of Miller’s comments in relation to Jews, anti-Semitism and Zionism.

They have previously stated that Miller’s conspiratorial obsession with Zionism and Israel’s ‘nefarious worldwide agenda’ are

He has also accused Labour Party leader Keir Starmer of taking “Zionist money” and talked of a “witch hunt” against Labour members accused of antisemitism.

Miller was dismissed by the University of Bristol over comments made about Jewish students, a month after CAA started legal proceedings on behalf of students.

“He is a conspiracy theorist with a history of controversy relating to Jewish students,” said a CAA spokesman.

Miller has asserted that “Zionism is racism”, called “to end Zionism as a functioning ideology of the world” and accused the Bristol’s Jewish Society of being part of a worldwide Zionist conspiracy.

He has also portrayed the International Definition of Antisemitism as an attack on free speech and accused the Israeli Government of engaging in an “all-out attack” on the global Left as part of an “attempt by the Israelis to impose their will all over the world”.

Israel's population has reached 9,593,000 according to the Central Bureau of Statistics annual report published just before Rosh Hashanah.

The figure is more than 10-fold compared to the State of Israel’s independence. There were 806,000 residents in 1948.

The population reached one million within a year and had trebled by 1958.

Israel’s population is expected to reach 10 million by the end of 2024, 15 million by late 2048 and 20 million by 2065.

According to the CBS, the Israeli population grew by 187,000 (about 2%) in the past 12 months. There were 7.07m Jewish residents, 2.03m Arabs (about 21%), and a combination of other religions and unaffiliated people.

Aside from 177,000 births, 49,000 made Aliyah and 2,000 Israelis returned from living abroad.

Israel is the 100th most populous country in the world. This does not include 250,000 illegal foreign workers and African migrants

living in Israel.

Israel’s population is considered to be young compared to Western countries. An Israeli male’s life expectancy is just over 80 years, a female approaching 85.

CBS data showed that 45.3% of Jews defined themselves as secular, 19.2% marginally observant, 13.9% partially religious, 10.7% religious and 10% are ultra-Orthodox. And 89.3% of Israelis are satisfied with their lives.

The report also found that 70.4% of Jews are satisfied with their economic situation, 74% of Israelis live in cities, 15% in local councils, 10.4% in regional council areas.

According to reports, most immigrants have come from Russia, Ukraine, France, the United States and Ukraine. Around 3.3 million people have immigrated to Israel since 1948, 45% since 1990.

Rising anti-Semitism in France has seen a spike in recent years.

In 2020, 78% of the Jewish population were ‘Sabras’ (born in Israel) compared to 35% in 1948.

Over half of the Jewish population are Israeli-born to at least one Israeli-born parent.

Rabin rally days before elections “Terminate” hatred says Arnie

Israel’s Labor Party is heading a rally in memory of former party leader and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin three days before the country goes to the polls on November 1.

The "We are fighting for his way" rally will be held on October 29 at Jerusalem's Zion Square. It will also mark the 100th anniversary of Rabin’s birth.

Rabin was murdered after a peace rally on November 5 1995 by right-wing extremist Yigal Amir.

Last year’s rally did not take place for the first time since his assassination. Rabin is the only prime minister of Israel to be assassinated.

Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli said that Rabin's memorial rally would remember the “terrible murder” that was the result of “incitement to violence against Rabin and the courageous policies he pursued”.

The Labor Party will continue to campaign on issues Rabin gave priority, noted Labor leader Michaeli.

“We will follow its path in defence of democracy and the State of Israel, and will fight with all its might against the incitement to hatred and racism,” she said.

Yaya Fink, former CEO of Darkenou, is organising the rally, and added, “There is a duty to speak out against incitement to hatred in the name of democracy at a time when activists are using extreme violence against pro-democracy protestors.

Wojciech Soczewica, Auschwitz Foundation director general added, “The tiny shoes of the youngest victims of Auschwitz are a special symbol of the crimes perpetrated there. They require preservation, like all other personal items saved by the Museum's conservators, but they evoke a sense of even greater responsibility on the part of our generation to preserve them for the future.”

Among 1.3 million people deported to Auschwitz were 232,000 children up to the age of 18.

The largest numbers of children arrived at the camp in the second half of 1942. The majority were Jewish and immediately murdered on arrival.

When Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz in 1945, only about 500 children under 15 years of age were left in the camp, all suffering from diseases and malnutrition.

Mainstream OPINION PIECE

Last week I made reference to this paper representing a mainstream view of the Jewish Community. This was against the background of some groups claiming to speak for one section or other when in reality, they speak only for themselves.

What is mainstream? Technically it is a body of thought which is widely held amongst a particular group, in this case British Jewry. Over the last few years though, and especially during the pandemic, the mainstream view has been relegated to the back seats whilst the noisy shrill voices of the self-appointed have become more prominent.

So, what is this body of thought? It covers a number of areas, some obvious some not so much. I should add a caveat and say that my assessment is wholly personal based upon my experiences. Nevertheless, if the noisy shrill amongst us can claim to speak for others, then so can I. Israel. Starting with one of the most contentious. The widely held view is one

of a very high level of support. There is considerable disappointment that Hamas and the Palestinian Authority hate us so much that they refuse to negotiate. There is also to some extent a reflection of the Israeli view which is that they are becoming less relevant, particularly in light of the Abraham Accords. The idea that peace will magically appear if land is given away is not popular, nor that somehow that lack of peace is down to Israel. The increasing gap between rich and poor in Israel is of greater concern as is the rising cost of living.

Islamist terrorism. A very serious threat and one which is well recognised across the community. For reasons beyond understanding some Jews just cannot see it, but again, we are talking small numbers here.

Amongst the youth, the bulk of Jewish 18 – 25 year olds do not share the views of those groups demanding sanctions

against Israel generally or the Israeli Ambassador in particular. They support Israel and otherwise take no interest.

The Labour Party. Previously profoundly anti-Semitic. Now not so much, but still a lot of work to be done and probably a significant number of members will never even tolerate us and still less Israel.

Israeli Ambassador. Her Excellency Tzipi Hotovely is the person who represents the State of Israel in the UK. This is an important role and she deserves our respect, not childish demonstrations from a tiny part of the community. It is a pity that the energy put into criticism against her is not channelled into something more worthwhile, such as the pay to slay policy of the Palestinian Authority.

Interfaith. Great idea provided the real issues are discussed, such as Christian anti-Semitism and Islamist terrorism.

All of this brings us back to the Jewish Weekly. By presenting matters which affect the not so noisy majority and allowing articles such as this to be produced, the paper is getting a mainstream message across.

Anything else is a waste of time.

As I said earlier, this is very much a personal list though I do believe that these views are held by large numbers of the Jewish Community. What sets these people apart from the shrill noisy brigade is that they are neither shrill nor noisy.

Many are too busy working or looking after their families to get involved with these issues which is how their views are simply not heard, or for that matter taken into account by those who either are or consider themselves communal leaders.

All of this brings us back to the Jewish Weekly. By presenting matters which affect the not so noisy majority and allowing articles such as this to be produced, the paper is getting a mainstream message across.

Such balance is not only desirable, but essential particularly in view of the seriousness of the issues in question. Shrill and noisy it isn’t; part of the mainstream, it is.

Lapid calls for peaceful Palestinian state at UN

Prime Minister Yair Lapid has told the United Nations General Assembly in New York that a ‘two-state solution’ is dependent on a peaceful Palestinian state. But his speech has been met with mixed reactions in Israel.

In a detailed address Lapid said that any agreement was conditional on a peaceful Palestinian state that did not threaten Israel. He also offered a blunt warning about Iran to the assembly and met with Prime Minister Liz Truss to discuss bilateral relations.

The ‘two-state’ deal however was the main topic of debate for angry Israeli politicians.

Addressing member states, Lapid said that an agreement with the Palestinians based on two states for two peoples was the “right thing” for Israel's security, economy and future of our children.

“Peace is not a compromise,” he explained. “It is the most courageous decision we can make.

“Despite all the obstacles, still today a large majority of Israelis support the vision of this two-state solution. I am one of them.

We have only one condition, that a future Palestinian state will be a peaceful one.

That it will not become another terror base from which to threaten the well-being, and the very existence of Israel. That we will have the ability to protect the security of all the citizens of Israel, at all times.”

Lapid added. “We want to live in peace but only if it gives us security, not if it threatens us even more.”

Israel’s leader had a message for the people of Gaza. “We're ready to help you build a better life, to build an economy,” he said. “We presented a comprehensive plan to help rebuild Gaza. We only have one condition, stop firing rockets and missiles at our children.”

Lapid added, “The Middle East is our home. We are here to stay. Forever. And we call upon every Muslim country, from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, to recognise that, and to come talk to us. Our hand is outstretched for peace.”

Turning his attention to the Iranian nuclear threat Lapid did not hold back on his comments.

Lapid said that Israel was a proud sovereign nation and equal member of the UN but would not be silent against those wishing to harm the State.

Noting that antisemitism was the willingness to believe the worst about Jews without questioning, he said, “Antisemitism is judging Israel by a different standard than any other country. Conducting this orchestra of hate is Iran.”

He observed, “The only way to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, is to put a credible military threat on the table. And then, and only then, to negotiate a longer

and stronger deal with them. It needs to be made clear to Iran, that if it advances its nuclear program, the world will not respond with words, but with military force. Every time a threat like that was put on the table in the past, Iran stopped, and retreated.”

But he lamented, “Today, the world is choosing the easy option. It chooses not to believe the worst, despite all the evidence to the contrary.”

Lapid warned, “The Jews today have a state. We will not stand by while there are those who try to kill us. Not again. Never again.” In spite of Lapid’s overall comments political opponents blasted the ‘two-state’ speech with opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu leading a chorus of disapproval.

“Lapid is putting the Palestinians back on the centre of the world stage and sending Israel straight back into the Palestinian pit,” he fumed. “Now, he plans to give them a terrorist state in the heart of Israel, a state that is going to threaten us all. So, let me tell you, Lapid, my partners and I will not let this happen. Lapid is dangerous to our future and our survival, on the Palestinian front as well as on the Iranian front.”

Finance Minister Lieberman, head of Yisrael Beteinu noted, “Any talk of creating a Palestinian state is giving in to terrorism.”

Meretz leader Zehava Galon described the speech as a “brave step” that gave hope and a horizon to millions of people that the cycle of violence could ended. But added, “The words must be backed up by deeds that will set into motion a process that will ultimately lead to a peace agreement of two states for two peoples.” Justice Minister Gideo Sa’ar commented, “The endorsement of a terrorist state in the West Bank will endanger Israel’s security, most of the Israeli people won’t allow it.”

And Alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stated, “There’s no place or reason to bring up the idea of a Palestinian state. The government I headed achieved much in the West Bank without concessions, that will endanger Israel’s security.”

Bezalel Smotrich, Religious Zionism party said, "Gantz and Lapid are leading Israel down a dangerous path which brings talk of a Palestinian state back. We warned that this government will lead us back to the Oslo Accords.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Israel was not a partner for peace and called on the UN to “recognise full state membership for Palestine”.

Elsewhere in his speech, Lapid said that Israel had proved its desire for peace through the Abraham Accords, Negev Summit, treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and agreements with the Arab world. Negev Summit working groups were “changing the face of the Middle East”, Lapid noted.

He added, “There is an Arab party as a member of our coalition. We have Arab judges in our Supreme Court. Arab doctors saving lives in our hospitals. Israeli Arabs are not our enemies, they are our partners in life. Come and visit us. You will discover that Israel is an incredible, cultural mosaic.”

Lapid initially overviewed the creation of a Jewish State that was a strong liberal democracy which was “proud and prosperous”. Recalling that his father was Holocaust survivor and grandfather was murdered in a concentration camp,” Lapid told the assembly that Israel had focused on the future.

“We are building the Promised Land.

History is determined by people,” he explained. “We need to understand history, respect it and learn from it, but also to be willing and able to change it. To choose the future over the past. Peace over war.

Partnership over seclusion and isolation.”

Away from the general assembly, Lapid congratulated Truss on taking office and anticipated Israel-UK relations would reach new heights. The leaders discussed bilateral ties and instructed teams to advance negotiations on a free trade agreement.

The Jewish Weekly’s DAVID SAFFER met with Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy during his visit to London when he held a series of high-profile briefings with cross-party MPs and Peers last week.

Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy is at the centre of Israeli politics.

British parliamentarians and Peers heard first-hand from Levy about Israel’s position on domestic and global issues, and strengthening the UK-Israel partnership during a whistle-stop trip to London before the Jewish New Year came in last week.

Levy, a member of Yesh Atid, met with key government officials and Labour leader Keir Starmer in a packed schedule.

There was also a chance to meet dozens of cross-party MPs including Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Jacob Rees-Mogg at a reception hosted Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle.

Levy had previously met with Hoyle at a meeting in Greece at a general assembly of speakers.

“I wanted to pass on my condolences to a member of parliament,” he explained. “Our meeting was meant to last five minutes but we created a friendship within 50 minutes.

It reflects the relationship between the two countries.”

Levy served the Jerusalem Police and IDF with distinction before his election as an MK in the Knesset. He served the government as Deputy Minister of Finance almost a decade ago.

Before discussing the threat of Iran and other pressing matters Levy expressed his condolences on the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II. “In Israel everybody followed the news of the queen and the funeral together with the rest of the world,” he said.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid was addressing the United Nations General Assembly when we sat down and was expected to comment on the potential of a two-state solution.

Levy had clear views on the matter.

“My party, Yesh Atid, and me, in all my meetings, I talk about the two-state solution,” he said. “Of course, my dream is about a greater Israel as promised by G-d from the Jordan River to the sea. But is it possible?

Levy continued, “The main problem is the other side. Who do we meet? Hamas, who sits in Gaza and declares they want to destroy the State of Israel, or Abu Mazen (Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas) who has been weak. We have to understand that our partner is not practical.

We are looking for partners to sit around the negotiating table. I don't believe there will be peace tomorrow morning. This is something that needs to be digested. We need to sign some kind of an agreement for the future of our children, grandchildren

Levy described the Abraham Accords as a “very important” move historically as Israel could build symbiotic relationships with countries.

accepted that Israel is an existing fact. And other countries in the past year have followed suit to join the Accords.

They can benefit in many areas including technology and aid we can provide.”

Levy added, “The State of Israel reaches its hand with peace to the Arab world and any country that would like to sign a peace treaty with it. They should take the example

from Egypt and Jordan. We have mutual interests. Partnerships both with Egypt and Jordan have been strengthened recently.

Israeli agriculture and irrigation are among the most advanced in the world. By providing water to Jordan we have maintained a standing peace. We can reach our hand out in peace to Arab states. We are saying, “enough with war”.”

Levy also explained that Israel can provide expertise in global warming.

He said, “The world is heating up. It’s important countries of the world and especially those that are effected, pay attention to the aid we can give them.”

Regarding the threat of the Iranian regime, Levy had a stark warning for politicians.

“Iran is a terrorist country,” he said. “It’s been dragging its feet in Vienna for the last eight months and is not willing to sign any kind of agreement. It’s playing for time and is progressing towards nuclear capacity. I’ve explained to European leaders that Iran is at the last stages of becoming

a nuclear state and the Middle East will become weaponised. Other states will purchase weapons from Iran.

“It is not going to be avoidable that Iran will threaten Europe. Don’t say we did not know. I’ve told this to all the leaders I’ve met in the last year.”

Levy added, “Iran is a fundamentalist extreme country that will threaten world order. Iran is the only country in the world that declares on camera that it is within its interests to destroy the State of Israel. I’ve clarified to various leaders the phase of talks has ended. There is the military option now on the table. We need to see how these topics develop in the next few weeks.”

Regarding global antisemitism, Levy noted, “It’s extremely worrying and certainly a cause for concern. An antizionist is an antisemite. They are absolutely allowed to criticise the state of Israel. But when you are antizionist you deny the right for Israel to exist as a Jewish state.”

Levy was well aware of issues within the Labour Party under former leader Jeremy Corbyn and thanked his successor, Starmer, for the new line he has taken on antisemitism, when he met him.

Israeli leaders visiting the UK take time to speak about Jewish communities that support Israel. Levy had a message.

“The Jewish community of the UK is very important to the State of Israel,” he said.

“Jews wherever they are very important to us. The State of Israel stands with the Jewish communities. We don't want to lose them, we are a very small people after the Holocaust. Whoever wants to visit or study in Israel, they are welcome.”

This was another deal from a team match and the contract was the same at both tables, with both North players doing well to avoid a 3NT contract that quickly fails on a heart lead.

At the first table, West led the jack of diamonds, covered by the king, and won with the ace. East shifted to the queen of hearts, covered by the king and won by West’s Ace. West then exited with the six of hearts. East won with the ten and continued with the jack of hearts. Declarer ruffed high and drew trumps with dummy’s ace and king but he still had to lose a club to go one down.

At the other table, the lead was the same, the jack of diamonds. Declarer decided that he wanted to keep East, the danger hand (because of the possible Heart position as it turned out to be), off lead. Therefore declarer called for dummy’s two of diamonds.

What could East do? If he played the ace of diamonds, he saw that declarer would have ten tricks outside the heart suit: six trumps and four tricks in the minors.

However, if declarer had started with 6:3:1:3 shape with the king of hearts then playing the ace of diamonds and shifting to a heart was crucial. That’s what East did, but declarer ruffed the third round of hearts, drew trumps ending in dummy and was now able to throw two clubs on the king and queen of diamonds. South claimed ten tricks: six trumps and four tricks in the minors.

If however, East had let the jack of diamonds hold, declarer would have ruffed out the ace on the next round of diamonds, then drawn trumps with the queen and ace. After discarding a heart on dummy’s good diamond, declarer would have played the ace, king, and another club. The defenders could then have taken the ace of hearts, but that would have been all. Declarer would have made ten tricks: six trumps, a diamond, two clubs and a club ruff in dummy.

GIFT help for families over Rosh Hashanah

Rabbi Moshe Feldman was invited to talk about Rosh Hashanah and blow the Shofar at St. Phillips RC School Broughton, in the heart of the Kehillah. Over 300 children and teachers listened intently.

GIFT has been helping individuals and families in need across London, Manchester and Israel with a food packing initiative for Rosh Hashanah.

For almost two decades over 30,000 volunteers have distributed over 500,000 essential food parcels.

GIFT has seen a significant surge in warehouse volunteers these past three years.

With a 40% increase in food referrals since March 2020, acts of giving to those in need are intensifying.

As GIFT is supporting over 400 households it continues to make the joy of giving and receiving possible throughout the community’s most predominant time of the year, the month of Tishri.

Families and individuals packed over 1,000 food support parcels for Rosh Hashanah including honey cakes, grape juice, jars of honey and boxes of Yom Tov candles together with dry bags, fresh fruit, vegetables and challah packages to ensure a sweet start to the year.

Viviane Goldsmith and with her family came to pack support parcels on Sunday.

They have been volunteering for four years in various capacities. Husband Jeremy collects food weekly from the local Sainsbury’s GIFT collection box and her five children enjoy packing at the Giving Hub. “Each time our kids are left feeling inspired and wanting to do more to help the community,” she said. “What is so special about GIFT is that kids are able to instantly

make the connection between packing the food and it reaching those in need.”

A service user thanked GIFT for constant support. They said, “My condition means I’m unable to get out, even to the shops. Your food parcels are always varied, thoughtful and help me get through the week and the Rosh Hashanah bag is such a treat! I also really look forward to the volunteer’s visit as it’s often my only contact with another person.”

Food parcel packing remains an enjoyable family activity and popular initiative at GIFT. In the same spirit, GIFT’s education team joined Finchley Federation Synagogue in making up Rosh Hashanah packages, designed cards together with Connect Borehamwood, and decorated honey jars with Bushey Shul.

Yavneh students provided 100 GIFT families with honey cake recipes for the New Year. Families and students noted this was the highlight of their day and inspired them to do even more.

GIFT’s Manchester branch organised a Rosh Hashana parcel wrapping session alongside King David High School students.

GIFT’s Israel branch initiated thousands of Rosh Hashanah cards designed by children in schools across Jerusalem to be given to soldiers and their families.

Kisharon job opportunities for Year 12 students Eight students from Hasmonean High School and JFS in Kisharon’s year 12 programme started paid work shifts in the summer.

Another wave of recruitment is underway since the start of the new academic year.

Ben, a pupil of Hasmonean High School for Boys, has been making challah with tenants at Montpelier Rise.

He said, “Baking together was a great experience. It proved how inclusive challah baking and the project can be. Together we all made perfect bread for Shabbat.”

Word spread about Kisharon’s recruitment to students and after completing forms and interviews, on accepting the jobs each pupil had online training.

Two hours a week is the minimum working requirement and Kisharon expects the team will settle into regular working patterns. Available shifts are posted on a WhatsApp group and anyone available to work at that time can respond. During the work no one is left unsupervised.

people Kisharon supports on a Shabbat playing games, singing songs and enjoying seudah shlishit with them.

While the project will not ease the serious shortage of support workers that has impacted social care across the UK it will go some way to enhancing the Jewish atmosphere in supported living at Kisharon.

Rachel Ucko, Kisharon’s Community Inclusion Coordinator, said, “The programme has had a really positive impact on the people we support. It’s bringing Jewish energy into Kisharon and we look forward to the next recruitment phase.”

Head of Jewish Living, Sara Levin added, “We are really excited about the project, which we hope will plant seeds for future careers in the minds of some talented and capable individuals in the community. I am delighted that the Year 12 students have begun, and will continue to bring a real boost to Jewish life for people we support.”

AJEX ‘honey bee’ project

AJEX recently funded an inter-generational Beehive project for Nightingale Hammerson at Nightingale House care home in Clapham.

Nightingale’s gardener Phil led an extraction event for residents and children from Apples and Honey Nursery located on the grounds of the house.

The project was possible due to Welfare Officer, Colin Shieff and AJEX Vice President, Arnold Phelops who managed a grant from the AJEX Housing Fund.

The Fund was established from proceeds when the original AJEX house was sold a number of years ago.

Funds support projects at care homes in the UK Jewish community and veteran residents. Funding has been donated to 30 projects. These also include building

restorations, furniture, wheelchairs, garden design, sports equipment, a music project in Manchester, memory tables and VE day celebration tea in Leeds.

As part of the project, a series of talks were held. Residents heard about different aspects of beekeeping including uses of beeswax.

Interactive classes included visits to the Apiary, candle making, honey extraction and frame making. Activities also took place in the Nursery, including making a model beehive.

Nearly 100 jars of honey were produced Income from honey sold will be donated back. The project will continue next year, AJEX are looking for volunteers to decorate bees.

It is in that light that I write to you. There’s been quite a “broiges” amongst members within my family. Without going into detail, the bottom line is that those who were in the wrong have asked forgiveness but those who were wronged, have made it clear that they cannot forgive. I know one is obligated to ask forgiveness, but is there a Jewish perspective on the need to forgive, especially when aggrieved?

Samantha Dear Samantha Forgiveness is a hot topic in psychology, philosophy and of course religion. There is a lot of focus and discussion on the matter, which stems, in large part, from the growing fear that grudges are too dangerous to leave lying around, and the world is too small for us to just walk away from them. At the micro level, unresolved resentments embitter lives and destroy relationships. The process of forgiving is

therefore increasingly popular in therapy.

Everyone knows that Adam and Eve made a bad mistake in the Garden of Eden. But their primary mistake was not eating from the fruit. After eating, G-d called to Adam and said: “Did you eat from the tree which I commanded you not to eat?” Adam replied: “The woman that you gave me, she gave me to eat from the tree.” G-d asked Eve, “What is this that you have done?” She replied, “The serpent deceived me.”

G-d obviously knows what Adam had done, yet He does not attack with an accusation. Rather, He strikes up a conversation, asking in a gentle way thus giving Adam a chance to admit his mistake, and express regret. Instead Adam blames it all on Eve. Eve passes responsibility off to the snake. Everyone claims they did nothing wrong! That was their worst mistake.

We are not perfect. No one knows that more so than G-d Himself. He created us this way! But He does expect us to take responsibility for our actions and admit when we’ve done wrong. Because without doing so, there is no hope to correct it in the future. That is where the principle of Teshuva and forgiveness comes in.

that you’re not going to be able to properly reconcile with G-d if you haven’t also reconciled with your fellow friend. Halacha makes it clear that the atonement of Yom Kippur must be preceded by the effort to reconcile with persons you might have hurt. The Mishna in Yuma (8:9) is categorical in its statement: “The Day of Atonement brings no forgiveness if one is not reconciled with their neighbour.”

It is, admittedly, not as easy as it sounds. It is usually excruciatingly difficult for people to admit that they have done wrong. We excuse ourselves.

We refuse to admit the truth. We shift blame. We excel at rationalising just as Adam & Eve did. But the person who acknowledges the truth, “I have sinned,” has performed a great and meaningful act and will evoke greater compassion from heaven.

By the same token, when one is approached for forgiveness, Jewish law is categorical in that one should not be stubborn and, if the offender genuinely seeks to make amends, then one ought to be forgiving.

This is admittedly, no easy task. In society, when a person is wronged, there is a natural tendency to be hostile and vindictive, an attitude that just leads to increased conflict. Judaism mandates forgiveness. Much as the petitioner has to ask forgiveness from the one whom he offended before he can seek forgiveness from G-d, so too, the wronged individual has to be compassionate toward the offender just as he seeks compassion from G-d.

Of course if you genuinely prefer just to put the whole thing behind you, there is nothing wrong with deciding to forgive and forget. The problem is that many people think they are putting something behind them and in actuality they are only suppressing it.

One of the most fantastic pieces of advice I came across was in a book about forgiveness where the rabbi illustrated how a woman consulted him, airing her bitterness and grievance over her struggles as a single parent while her ex-husband is living it up with his new wife in another town. “How can I ever forgive him?” She asked. To which the rabbi replied: “I’m not asking you to forgive him, because what he did was acceptable. It wasn’t. It was wrong and selfish. I’m asking you to forgive because he doesn’t deserve the power to live in your head and turn you into a bitter and angry woman. He should be out of your life emotionally as completely as he is out of your life physically. But you keep on holding onto him. You are not hurting him by holding onto that resentment, but you are hurting yourself.”

Haters can’t let go or get on with life.

They become bitter and frustrated. It is like an acid, which damages not just the object upon which it is poured, but also the vessel in which it is stored. When we are hurt it is natural to want to hurt back, to strike out against the person who has hurt you. But if you choose to act on those feelings, what is accomplished but two hurt people and more negative feelings?

Many individuals as well as families are ruined by bitterness or a lack of forgiveness. The longer we carry a grudge, the heavier it becomes. The Torah tells us, “Don’t take vengeance and don’t bear a grudge.” He challenge is to ask ourselves, “Am I the type of person to put a stop to the negative cycle and forgive?

As the great Rabbi Yaakov ben Asher writes: “It is a requirement to appease and make amends to anyone we have wronged as Yom Kippur approaches.” To illustrate the point he cites the Midrash: “The angel…sees that there is no sin among the people of Israel on Yom Kippur, and he says, ‘Master of the universe, is there any other nation on earth so like the angels?’” Then the angel begins to list the similarities. The culmination of the list is as follows: “Just as the angels are free of sin, so Israel are free of sin. And just as the angels coexist in peace, so are Israel on Yom Kippur.” We see that the highest level of all is not being free of sin, but rather to live together in peace.

May we indeed merit that in exchange for our asking forgiveness, and, forgiving others, that G-d forgive us all and that He brings true sweetness and goodness into our lives and everlasting salvation to all mankind speedily.

Yom Kippur: Flying Amongst Angels

A speaker once started his seminar by holding up a $100 bill. “Who would like this $100 bill?”, he asked.

Every hand in the room went up.

The speaker looked around, and then crumpled the bill in his hand.

“Who wants it now?” he asked.

Every hand in the room remained in the air.

“Well,” he replied, “What about now?”

He dropped the bill on the ground and stomped on it with his shoe.

He picked up the now crumpled and dirty bill and showed it to the crowd.

“Who still wants it?”

Every hand was still up in the air.

“My friends, you have just experienced a very powerful lesson. No matter what I do to this money, no matter how crumpled or muddy it gets, it does not decrease in value. Many times in our lives, life has a way of crumpling us up and grinding us in the dirt. We make bad decisions, or deal with poor circumstances, and we begin to feel worthless. We feel that Hashem has abandoned us, that He no longer values us. But no matter what has happened, and no matter what will happen, you will never lose your value.

You were created b’tzelem Elokim, and nothing can change that.”

YOM KIPPUR: A MYSTERIOUS DAY

As we approach Yom Kippur, we recognize that it is unquestionably one of the most important days of the year. And yet, in many ways, it is a mystery. While one might assumedly categorize it as a day of suffering and sadness, Chazal refer to Yom Kippur as a spiritually uplifting day of atonement and rebirth (Taanis 4:8). There is even an element of the day that is associated with the happiness of Purim (Yom “Ki”-Purim, a day like Purim). At the same time, though, it is a fast day. We normally characterize fast days as times of mourning and sadness, such as Shiva Asar B’Tamuz and Tisha B’Av. How is Yom Kippur different, and what is the nature of this day?

SOUL QUESTIONS: WHAT ARE WE?

Arguably the most important concept in life, though often misunderstood, is the nature of the soul. Most people believe that they “have” a soul, some spiritual essence they possess within themselves. However, the deeper Jewish sources reveal a profound spiritual secret: you don’t have a soul, you are a soul. In other words, the soul is not an aspect of your self, or some spiritual component of your being; it is your very self.

You are a soul, a consciousness, a spiritual being. When you say “I”, you are referring to your soul, your inner sense of self. You have a body, emotions, and an intellect, all different aspects and expressions of your soul.

But you are a soul, a neshama, an infinitely expansive consciousness.

THE BIRTH OF FINITUDE

A soul is angelic, perfect, pure, and transcendent. This is what Chazal refer to as your “fetal self”, when you were still in the womb, just before entering this physical world (Niddah 30b). However, the moment one enters this physical world, the infinite expansiveness of the soul is confined within the physical body. The body is the container of the soul, but it is also the soul’s vehicle and tool, allowing the soul to manifest its will in this world. This is our mission in life.

We enter this world with an undeveloped vehicle, our limited body. The soul, our existential self, is already perfect, but we don’t yet have access to the fullness of our true self. As we journey through life, we tap into greater and greater aspects of our soul, our self, and we must then manifest them into the world through our physical bodies. In doing so, we uplift our physical vessels, and enable them to tap into greater and greater aspects of our true self. This is the beautiful cycle of life, the endless expansion and expression of self into this physical world.

OUR INNER STRUGGLE

While this perspective is both powerful and fundamental, its implementation is elusive, and perhaps humanity’s most central struggle. Many people believe that they are a body, a physical, finite being. Having forgotten our true selves, we are born with the illusory belief that we are only that which we can see. We look in the mirror, seeing only flesh and bone, and we believe that this is all that we are.

However, this is merely our starting point.

The turning point in life is the moment we realize that we are angelic souls in a physical casing. We are not physical beings attempting to have a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings trying to uplift our physical experience. This is the central theme of Yom Kippur.

YOM KIPPUR: FLYING WITH ANGELS

Yom Kippur is the one day of the year when we completely free ourselves of our physical limitations, embracing our angelic self. This day embodies true teshuva, when we return to our ultimate root, to our spiritual, perfect self. Chazal characterize Yom Kippur as the one day of the year when we have the ability to become a malach (angel). On this day, our lower self and physical urges are powerless, they cannot bring us down. They formulate this idea through the following gematria: “Ha’Satan”- the evil inclination, has the numerical value of 364. There are 365 days in the year, but the Satan only has power on 364 of those days. Yom Kippur is the one day where the Satan, the Yetzer Hara, has no power over you. On this day, you can completely transcend and experience angelic perfection (Yoma 20a).

WHY DO WE FAST?

There is a paradoxical relationship between the body and the soul: • Your soul, which is your “self”, is transcendent, infinite, and purely spiritual. You cannot see, smell, or touch the consciousness, the mind. You will

never see someone else’s inner world.

• The body, however, is finite, limited, and physical. Your soul will never die, but your body will eventually age and wither.

If the soul and body are complete opposites, how do they manage to coexist as one?

One would expect them to repel each other, like two opposite sides of a magnet.

This is the powerful purpose of food. There needs to be something to keep your soul attached to your body, some kind of “glue”.

Eating food generates the energy which keeps your neshama connected to your body. That is why the lack of eating has the opposite effect. What happens when you don’t eat? You become faint. What happens if you continue to fast? You will pass out.

And if you still don’t eat, your soul will leave your body and you will die. Eating maintains the connection between your soul and your body; it is what keeps you alive.

This is the depth behind the phrase “u’mafli la’asos- Who performs wonders”, that we recite in Asher Yatzar (the blessing we recite after using the bathroom). What “wonder” are we referring to? The Beis Yosef suggests that it is the wonderous paradox that our soul, infinitely transcendent, can remain connected to our bodies, a physical, finite vessel. We mention this specifically after using the bathroom because we have just filtered out the unneeded parts of what we ate or drank, the very means of forging the connection between body and soul.

We can now understand the concept of fasting, especially on the day of Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur, we attempt to live as malachim, completely transcending the physical world. We therefore fast, allowing our soul to somewhat transcend our body, enabling us to experience one day of living in an angelic state.

This principle sheds light on all the issurim of Yom Kippur. We don’t engage in the physical world because Yom Kippur is a day of transcending the physical aspects of human experience.

THE OPPORTUNITY OF YOM KIPPUR

This is the unique opportunity that Yom Kippur presents: to transcend, to experience the infinite. Unlike other fast days, it is not a day of suffering and mourning, but one of spiritual transcendence. As the famous quote goes: On Tisha B’Av, who can eat, on Yom Kippur, who needs to?” This is why the Rambam (Hilchos Shevisas He’Asor 1:4) states that on Yom Kippur we “rest” from eating. This is not a day of prohibition and suffering, it is one of completely embracing the spiritual, tapping into our absolute root, our truest sense of self.

PREPARATION FOR THE YEAR TO COME

The transcendent experience of Yom Kippur lays the foundation for the rest of the year.

While the physical can be destructive if misused, the ideal is not to completely transcend the physical, but rather to use the physical in order to reflect something higher. Our goal as humans is not to escape the physical, but to use it as a means of connecting to the transcendent.

This is the key behind the process we undertake throughout the Yamim Noraim.

We first experience Elul, then Rosh Hashanah, and then Yom Kippur, a developmental process of elevating ourselves higher and higher above the physical world and deeper and deeper into the spiritual world. Only once we establish this transcendent root can we then re-immerse ourselves into the physical world, but this time on an entirely new level. Sukkos, which immediately follows Yom Kippur, embodies this lesson in embracing the physical. Our root must be transcendent, grounded firmly in the spiritual, and then atop that foundation we can descend into the physical and use it in a transcendent way.

May we be inspired to fully experience our angelic selves this Yom Kippur, and then infuse the totality of our spiritual acquisition into our physical life, elevating our actions and intentions as we move this physical world towards its ultimate spiritual root.

Choosing a care home is a big decision and can be very emotional. Where possible, it’s a good idea to start thinking about this before being faced with a crisis which can lead to making hasty decisions and choosing a home that in the long term may not be the best option.

There are many reasons people choose to

move into a care home. It might be for short term care whilst a care giver is away or it could be because the person can no longer manage day to day life at home on their own. Other reasons for needing to choose a care home may involve medical needs and nursing care, or because someone is living with dementia or receiving end of life care.

It is important to find the right home that offers the extra support needed in a safe and caring environment. There are different types of care homes and at Jewish Care, our residential homes offer support with personal care such as washing, dressing and taking medication, assistance from qualified nurses and specialist care for people living with dementia. There are also specially designed activities for people living with dementia which encourage our residents to engage and interact as much as possible.

Grandma’s ‘channel’ swim for camp simcha A north London grandmother has channelled her energy into fundraising for Camp Simcha by swimming the distance between England and France at her local pool.

Anna Churnin, 67, has swum the equivalent of the Channel Crossing at Copthall Leisure Centre in Mill Hill over the past four months.

Camp Simcha, which helps families with seriously ill children, has been supporting Anna’s granddaughter Chloe and her family since she underwent life-saving surgery shortly after her birth in December 2020.

Chloe, who has Down’s Syndrome, had the surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) after doctors diagnosed a rare condition called congenital long segmented tracheal stenosis, which causes serious breathing difficulties.

Her traumatic start in life was made even tougher by restrictions imposed during the second Covid-19 lockdown.

Anna, who lives in Edgware and is a member of the United Synagogue there, said of son Neil and daughter-in-law Kate: “I don’t know how they would have done it without Camp Simcha’s support, especially in those early weeks.

“It was lockdown and we couldn’t see them to help. One was always at the hospital and the other was home with their son.”

Chloe’s father contacted Camp Simcha after learning of them from the hospital.

Anna recalled: “He contacted them at eight the morning and by 10am Camp Simcha had swung into action.”

The family were taken aback by the “myriad” ways in which Camp Simcha has supported them, said Anna.

Camp Simcha provided transport between GOSH and the family home, hot meals, counselling and even ‘date nights’

to provide some respite for Kate, who works in early years education, and Neil, Chloe’s full-time carer.

Their son Alfie, four, has also benefited from art therapy and other activities and entertainment.

Though Chloe is still being monitored, she is thriving. “Her spirit and her determination is amazing,” said her proud Nana.

Anna, who previously worked in the special needs department at JFS, said she calculated that it would take 2,112 lengths to cover the distance between England and

She added: “I’m not a fast swimmer, but I’m steady.

“It’s been great for me, I’ve raised almost £2,300 and I’ve told a lot of people at the pool what I’m doing so I’ve publicised Camp Simcha - it’s been a win-win all round.”

Last year Anna raised around £2,000 for Camp Simcha with a coffee morning. So what’s next?

“I’ve got to think of something a bit different so I will wait for inspiration to strike!” she said.

JWA wins £60,000 grant and joins pan-london healthy relationships and consent education programme Jewish Women’s Aid has been awarded a four-year grant worth £60,000 through London Councils to act as the borough lead in Barnet and Brent for healthy relationships and consent education in London schools and youth settings. Leading UK charity Against Violence & Abuse (AVA) in partnership with the London Violence Against Women and Girls Consortium is overseeing a group of specialist organisations to support London schools to prevent sexual violence, reaching students, teachers and parents.

The ‘Healthy London Healthy Relationships’ programme launched online on Tuesday 20 September and will provide: • Free training on how to embed a whole school approach and digital safeguarding for educators and other professionals working with and supporting children and young people • Bespoke support and community outreach with schools, parents and youth settings • A prevention toolkit accessed via an online Hub for professionals working

with children and young people Jewish Women’s Aid will be the specialist provider for mainstream Jewish secondary schools in London, as well as in mainstream schools where there is a significant Jewish population. As borough lead for Barnet, Brent, City of London and Richmond, we will also signpost incoming requests from schools to external organisations where needed.

JWA currently delivers educational sessions in schools and organisations, including: JFS, JCoSS, King Solomon, Hasmonean Boys, Hasmonean Girls, Queen Elizabeth Boys, Watford Grammar, UJIA, UJS, FZY, LJY, RSY, Habonim Dror and BBYO. Speaking at the launch, our Schools Manager Ilana Hutchinson outlined JWA’s approach to prevention education, showcasing our brand new curriculum and saying, “We want to empower young people to make a difference within their peer groups and school communities, and inspire them to become drivers of positive change.”

a delivery partner for the Healthy London Healthy Relationships programme. Difficulties arising from social media, academic pressure, social, religious, and educational challenges are just a few examples of potential adversity with which a typical teenager needs to grapple, often all at once.

Now. We act as a frontline response team; staying ahead of a problem to prevent it becoming a crisis.

What are we doing to support our vision?

Our frontline service is JTeen Support, operating a text line currently every weekday from 6pm-12am (with further funding we would like to expand these hours). We have recently also introduced our phone line for those teenagers who either do not have access to text or prefer to talk about their worries and concerns rather than text.

Our trained volunteer counsellors and qualified therapists are ready to provide teenagers with confidential, non-judgmental support, deigned to empower them to deal with any of the inevitable emotional challenges they face. On any given night, we receive contact from up to 20 teenagers sharing with us a range of challenges that they are facing; from relatively low-level anxiety (perhaps related to a family or school situation,) to far higher levels of emotional trauma, including severe eating disorders and selfharm. Over 80,000 texts were exchanged with teens in our first year and we see those numbers growing significantly as knowledge of our support services increases. We have now had over 2,000 interactions on Jteen Support with teenagers.

Within our JTeen Therapy programme we are also able to offer therapeutic intervention on a case by case basis where our clinical advisors recommend a small amount of intervention to prevent serious problems arising. Therapy by cognitive behaviour therapists (by text or phone) can make a huge difference to recipients in terms of providing them with a trained listening ear, tailored coping tools or even just to ensure that their concerns are being properly addressed by professionals.

Our JTeen Educate programme delivers workshops to teens in schools on a range of vital topics such as exam stress, mood boosting, and healthy friendships. In our first year we held 18 school workshops and took part in 12 school assemblies. We have met over 1,000 teenagers in various secondary schools in northwest London through this programme and we aim to expand Jteen Educate to further Jewish schools, University Groups, Yeshivas and Seminaries throughout the UK.

Within this programme, we also work with teachers so that our qualified therapists can help teachers more easily recognise and consequentially respond effectively to students who are struggling with their individual emotional wellbeing challenges.

Our JTeen Parent programme is designed to provide parents with regular seminars on topical areas, with expert speakers and presenters offering guidance and advice to parents in navigating their childrens’ adolescence.

This summer we launched a JTeen Summer Wellbeing programme, promoting wellbeing for teenagers participating in summer camps.

Our initiative included in-house training and a written handbook for counsellors to help identify any campers who are struggling and to provide them with tools for connecting more effectively with young people to the teenagers in their camps. Parents and campers also received a summer guide with tips and advice for making the most out of the summer camp experience.

When a crisis or trauma effects on our community there is a need for an organisation which is able to understand the impact these events may have on our teenagers and the difficult questions which arise.

Jteen Response is our programme where schools or organisations can contact us to provide either group therapy or one to one advice for teenagers struggling with something that may not have directly impacted them but may well still be affecting their Our most ambitious and far-reaching programme is Jteen Prevent.

With information and candid feedback we have collected through the Jteen Support service, we are collating data which will eventually be made available to institutions and organisations within the community, to enabling us all to understand the challenges our teenagers face and empowering the community to work as one in the fight against neglected mental health in adolescents.

Jteen has the capability to encourage generationally beneficial change, positively impacting both teenagers and their families.

Allow me a couple of minutes to share why.

Each of us is profoundly blessed in so many ways. There is much to celebrate in life, both personally and communally, in particular as we take a moment to consider just how privileged we are to live at this point in time, in this country and the manifest benevolence we enjoy.

Despite the incredible advances and blessings of the 21st Century life, a link, an emoji or a few bars on a screen does not necessarily imply real or deep connection. Electrical impulses and thumbs up on a virtual screen do not spell genuine friendship. In a world of virtual connectivity,multiple followers, likes and views can often leave the individual woefully lonely, anxious, confused and ironically disconnected. “Alone in the crowd” takes on a tragic connotation in our contemporary context.

This week we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the closest we have to a universal refresh; however, it is also known as a time of judgement. Rosh Hashanah is a time around which, according to our tradition, the Creator judges all of creation anew. In a manner of speaking, it’s the annual reset button; a time in which, every aspect of the world, including its inhabitants, are assessed as to the extent to which we are worthy of such renewal. So too as we begin this year, we embark on a journey where we aim to create a real connection with self, with others, with ourselves and with G-d.

However, the word for connection in Hebrew is “chibbur”; a friend – “chaver”; society- “chevra”.

Our customs and mitzvot as well as deeds of kindness and prayers were never intended as automated rituals of box ticking, rather as ways to form real connection. To overlook genuine connection as the crucible in which every relationship must necessarily reside for it to endure, be it human or towards the Divine, is to lose the very lifeblood of existence itself.

Our world suffered an unparalleled period of disconnect. We became accustomed to working alone, to worshipping alone, and living through so many pivotal moments alone. Deep down we all know this doesn’t work. Man is a social being.

Connectivity requires genuine closeness; friendship demands authentic bonds; prayer requires sincere expression and parenting demands authentic attachment. Without genuine connection, at best we slide across the superficial veneer of virtual or augmented worlds of alienation from self and other. The most precious moments of life become tragically lonely, meaningless and bereft of the joy that is there for each of us to embrace.

People naturally yearn true, deep and authentic connection. Our younger generation has been starved of the elixir of life.

My blessing is for you and all those dear, near and indeed far to rediscover the beauty, the meaning, the love and the fulfilment inherent in a life of true connection. May 5783 be the Year of Connection for us all.

Lord Sacks MDA bloodmobile dedicated in Israel Members of the late Chief Rabbi’s family join from around the world.

A bloodmobile donated in memory of the late Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l was dedicated earlier this week in a moving ceremony in Israel. The tribute - conceived following his untimely death in November 2020 - was unveiled following a fundraising drive that raised the £135,000 needed to make the purchase the vehicle. The life-saving vehicle will traverse the country to collect blood from up to 80 donors a day - with each unit split between three recipients, potentially saving thousands of lives each year Members of Lord Sacks’ family joined with friends and Magen David Adom dignitaries at the newly opened MDA National Blood & Logistics Centre in Ramla, central Israel. An inscription on one side of the vehicle describes Lord Sacks as a “giant of world Jewry whose impact crossed faiths and borders” and on the other side is a pertinent quote from Rabbi Sacks himself: “At the heart of Judaism is the principle of the sanctity of life.”

Lady Elaine Sacks, who was joined at the occasion by her son Joshua, was presented

with a specially commission mezuzah, a replica of those adoring the door frames of the centre.

Lady Elaine commented, “To remember my dear husband in this life saving way, here in Eretz Yisrael - is so very special.”

Around 95 percent of Israel’s blood donations are collected by such mobile vehicles at schools, universities and other institutions, but some of the fleet is nearing two decades old and in need of urgent replacement. The Sacks Bloodmobile will eventually be stationed at MDA’s new state-of-the-art blood bank in Ramle, which it is hoped will enable the collection of 500,000 units a year, double the current capacity. The facility also includes a vault to hold blood supplies that is capable of withstanding a direct missile hit and Israel’s only human milk bank to support premature babies.

Speaking after the event, Daniel Burger of Magen David Adom UK said, “It is an honour to be able to dedicate a bloodmobile in memory of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and ensure one of the ways his legacy will live on is to enable MDA in Israel to save more lives.”

British ambassador to Israel, Neil Wigan said: “Rabbi Lord Sacks had a truly global impact and was an exceptional ambassador for the Jewish people. It is fitting that part of his lasting legacy will be to save lives on the streets of Israel.”

Enabling independence in your own home with support from Jewish Blind & Disabled

All too often people living with disabilities or sight loss find themselves struggling in their own home; not being able to do some of the day to day tasks that they previously could, concerned about how they will cope if their condition deteriorates and not sure where to turn to for help. Whether it is struggling with difficult steps into their property or not being able to wash or get dressed easily and a whole range of issues in between. But, it doesn’t have to be this way and there is help at hand to support people to manage in and around their home.

Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Independent Living Advisory service takes the organisation’s 50 years of knowledge and expertise to help people with vision impairments and / or physical disabilities living in their own home.

The service is led by Occupational Therapists who visit people in their homes and make individual recommendations on support available and aids and adaptations that enables someone to maintain their much-prized independence.

Following a temporary closure due to Covid-19, the service has now reopened and is supporting people of all ages across the community. The service has recently helped a lady in her 50’s who was housebound when she contacted Jewish Blind & Disabled. She has Fibromyalgia and a heart condition and doesn’t have any family that live in England. She was struggling to leave the home without support from carers due to her lack of suitable equipment. She needed and wanted her independence back.

After an initial assessment, it was clear that she needed a way to be able to leave her home without having to rely on other people. As she had limited funds of her own and therefore qualified for support with purchasing the aids she requires through the service, Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Independent Living Advisory Service supported her with the purchase of her electric wheelchair. She is now able to go out on her own and said: “I very much appreciate Jewish Blind & Disabled’s help, and am enjoying the freedom to be out.”

Other examples that have made a huge

impact on people’s lives include installing bath boards, ramps, hand rails or stair lifts, referrals to physiotherapists to help with mobility, recommendations for assisted technology which allow the control of functions within the home and the introduction of small aids such as a Knork Fork (a combination of a knife and fork in one piece) that is designed for people, who due to their disability, can only use one hand.

Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Chief Executive, Lisa Wimborne, said: “We know that Local Authority waiting lists for occupational therapy support, in some areas, can be upwards of 18 months and in the meantime, people are struggling to cope in their own homes. The Independent Living Advisory Service is designed to ensure that members of our community get the specialist support they need and importantly, when they need it.

Thanks to a generous donation, the service is offered for free to anyone from the community who is living in their own home. If you can afford to pay for your own aids and adaptations, you will be advised

Yom Kippur: A Snowy Day at the Laundromat

Evidently, religious crimes have a color!!

Encouraging us to penitence, Yeshayahu the prophet exhorts us to whiten our “red” sins: “If your sins are like scarlet, whiten them like snow; if they are crimson red, bleach them as wool.” The color red is synonymous with passion and desire, and is therefore designated as the color of sin.

If red is the color of sin, white is the color of repentance, as it hints of a return to a more primitive state of purity.

Yeshayahu depicts two very different metaphors for whitening our red sinssnow and laundered wool. How do these two metaphors illustrate the experience of teshuva?

A PROCESS

Teshuva can often be exasperating, because it feels duplicitous. Recidivism is natural to human behavior, and often, our sincere teshuva-vows and heartfelt pledges for improvement, fade with the passing of time. In rare instances teshuva launches dramatic and long-term overhaul, but, more often, our genuine commitments wilt in the face of long-bred inescapable habits.

We find ourselves continually trapped in a harsh cycle of teshuva, followed by religious failure, followed by recycled teshuva- a disheartening cycle of futility which deflates teshuva hopes. No one wants to feel like a two-faced hypocrite, and the specter of “teshuva-fraud” haunts our conscience.

Isaiah provides a solution to this teshuva quandary: similar to laundering clothing, teshuva is an incremental process with far reaching and long-term effects. Unlike laundering clothing, snowfall inevitably melts and this season’s snow doesn’t contribute to next winter’s accumulation.

There is no continuity between different snowfalls.

Cleaning garments is a process which improves the clothing even after it becomes dirtied, as previously laundered clothing is easier to cleanse. Removing stains today will make them significantly easier to remove tomorrow.

Even if we regress post-teshuva, our negative habits have been softened, our religious sensitivity has been heightened, and our ability to recover from sin improved. Current teshuva is a long-term investment for future rounds of teshuva which, hopefully, will be more effective and less arduous. Teshuva is like cleaning clothing: its gains may be reversed, but they are never erased. Wash, rinse, repeat. Wash, rinse, repeat.

HASHEM IS OUR PARTNER

Laundering wool requires significant

exertion and human labor, especially in a pre-automation era before washing machines. Likewise, teshuva requires extraordinary emotional investment.

Authentic change demands the honesty to acknowledge our flaws, the wisdom to chart recovery, and the courage to change our lifestyles, and sometimes, even our identities. Successful teshuva is a remarkable expression of unwavering self-honesty, free will, and fearless emotional courage.

Much like scrubbing dirty linens, genuine teshuva requires massive emotional scouring.

By contrast, snow coats our world “effortlessly”, through divinely delivered storms. Though teshuva is centered upon human decisions and human effort, it is also divinely assisted, and we must invite Hashem into the process itself. During our uncertain moments of repentance, we look to Heaven and pray for His help. We look to Hashem to cure us of emotional callousness and to help us pray fervently rather than listlessly. We ask Him to help clear our minds of confusion and indecision, and to empty our hearts of crass desire and selfish cowardice. We hope that He will walk us through a dark and confusing forest of sin.

By comparing teshuva to snowfall, Yeshayahu wants us to invite Hashem into the process of teshuva, rather than shouldering this immense burden on our own.

COVER, DON’T CLEANSE

Dirtied clothing becomes discolored, and laundering them restores their original sheen and bright hue. By contrast, snow doesn’t alter the color of the ground, but merely carpets it with a white plate. The color of the earth underneath snow hasn’t been transformed, yet a snow-covered surface appears pure and undisturbed.

The shiny gloss of a snow covered area, isn’t intrinsic to the ground underneath, which remains darkened.

Ideally, we strive for transformational

teshuva which reforms behavior and eliminates sin. However, teshuva comes in many varieties and when we don’t achieve ideal teshuva we must be satisfied with lesser grades. One form of “partial teshuva” is a snow-like ‘covering up’ of our failures, even without correcting them. In healthy relationships, passion and commitment help us overlook annoyances and frustration. Love and affection “coverup” our hurt and disappointment. Even without resolving differences and clashes, love and devotion allow us to disregard them.

Our relationship with Hashem is no different, and short of attaining perfect teshuva, we hope for a snow-like covering of our sins. We may have sinned egregiously, but we expect that our love for Hashem and His for us, “cover” those stains in the same manner that snow covers the ground.

Yom Kippur should not become solely a trip to a religious laundromat. It must also be a day of serene snow fall, in which the peaceful flakes of Hashem’s love for us covers the ugliness of human betrayal and misconduct. Laundering wool reminds us that teshuva is incremental and a lifelong process. Alternatively, snow-white teshuva comforts us with the confidence that Hashem actively collaborates with our teshuva, much the same way that He delivers snow. Additionally, snow reminds us that we may not be able to remove discoloration, but we can still cover it up with the exquisite radiance of our love for Hashem.

HORIZONS OF TESHUVA

Successful teshuva is pivoted upon a searing process of penetrating self-introspection. Detailed micro-analysis of our behavior is vital to change, and without drilling down to our specific sins, teshuva will always be external and faint.

However, in addition to drilling down to details, teshuva must also stretch our imagination, beyond our particular sins and

beyond our personality flaws. Repentance must address a broad sweep of our experience and the full totality of our personality. Just as no one would launder a single strand of wool, teshuva must cleanse the entire “garment” of our personas. How far can we stretch our teshuva? Can we eliminate sin, but also improve character? Can we calibrate our opinions and positions to better align them with religion and with moral integrity? Can we become more sensitive, more honest, more selfless, more idealistic, more courageous, and more compassionate people? Can we clean our entire “wardrobe”, and not just bleach an individual strand of wool?

TERRITORIES OF TESHUVA

The image of snowfall also stretches our teshuva, but in a very different manner than the stretching of cleaning clothes.

Snow doesn’t fall on an isolated district, but covers an entire region or a broad territory. Widespread, snow-like teshuva demands that we consider a broader horizon, not just our own religious experience but the religious state of society. If teshuva is like snow it must “fall” upon a broad territory and not just upon our own small patch of land.

Who do we pray for on Yom Kippur and who do we seek penitence for? Our hopes and dreams on Yom Kippur cannot begin and end in our own backyard. Society is hurtling through tumultuous times and in dire need of moral instruction and religious inspiration. Our state is badly splintered and politically crippled, and still struggling with various forms of spiritual malaise.

During Yom Kippur, can we look out the window and imagine a healthier world, with more civility and less hostility. Can we pray for our state and its citizens to achieve the harmony we have waited for?

Can we pray for a world closer to Hashem and to his spirit? Are we too busy scouring our souls with detergent that we don’t notice the snow outside?

Should there be an Atmosphere of Joy on the High Holidays?

There is a mitzvah of joy on every Yom Tov (see Pesachim 109a and Rambam Hilchot Yom Tov 6:17–18), so why should Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur be any different?

The Rambam (Chanukah 3:6) writes: “There is no Hallel on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, because they are days of repentance and awe and fear, not days of additional joy.”

There should be some element of joy on these days, but not “additional joy”, because of their solemn nature.

The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 32b) explains that the reason we don’t say Hallel on Rosh Hashanah is because “the books of life and death are open before Him”, and it is therefore inappropriate to sing joyously on that day.

The Yerushalmi (Rosh Hashanah 1:3) expresses a different feeling.

It describes how other nations prepare for their court verdicts – dressing in black, and letting their hair and nails grow,

because they don’t know which way the verdict will go.

“The Jewish people are not so. They wear white and wrap themselves in white, shave their beards and cut their nails, and eat, drink and are happy on Rosh Hashanah. Because they know the Almighty is performing miracles for them and will tip the scales in their favor…”

This is a joyous reality, an atmosphere of elation, in expectation of our sins being forgiven.

How can we reconcile the two emotions?

The Zohar (Bamidbar [part 3] p.118a) offers us a wonderful explanation. When the Jewish people are in the Diaspora, our divine service is that of awe and trepidation, but when the Jewish people are in the Land of Israel, divine service is a service of joy.

What’s the difference between Eretz Yisrael and the Diaspora?

The Sfat Emet (Re’eh, 5681) explains that serving Hashem with joy comes from the soul. The service of awe is the body’s work.

In Eretz Yisrael there is a special sanctity that charges the soul. Outside Israel, the work is awe and trepidation (which leads to joy). In Eretz Yisrael, the work is joy, and through joy we also merit awe, closeness to Hashem and fear of Heaven!

Rav Kook has a different idea. He says that when Am Yisrael are in exile – even if there are a lot of us – we are but a collection of individuals (see Orot 166:18). Each individual thinks of his or her own needs.

However, in Eretz Yisrael, it is the service of the collective. Individuals become Klal Yisrael.

Tremendous joy in crowning Hashem as King of the world.

And elation regarding Am Yisrael’s role in crowning Hashem.

Of course there is value in awe, trepidation – even tears – and an awareness of “who will live and who will die”. Yet it appears to me that Eretz Yisrael absorbs these contrasts. Here one can be joyous and one can cry. On the same day, we can sing Mareh Kohen and Unetaneh Tokef.

On the same day, we can celebrate Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

That is our blessed mission. Am Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael. Crowning Hashem as King of the world while – simultaneously – being solemnly aware of, and joyously excited by, the great responsibility in doing so.

“G-d commanded Yehoshua bin Nun and said, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the Children of Israel to the Land that I have sworn to them, and I shall be with you’” (Devarim 31:23)

summons Yehoshua and tells him to be “strong and courageous”. G-d will go “in front of” Yehoshua and will not forsake him. Moshe writes the entire Torah and gives the scroll to the Kohanim and the elders.

4TH ALIYA (REVI’I) – 31:10-13

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – DEVARIM 31:1-3

Moshe tells the people that he is no longer able to lead them, as he is not going into the Land with them (see Rashi).

Rather, Yehoshua (Joshua) will lead them across the Jordan, as G-d had decreed.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 31:4-6

Moshe continues by assuring the nation that they will conquer their enemies in Cana’an, in the same way that G-d allowed them to defeat the mighty kings Sichon and Og. However, they must make sure to destroy the idols that they will find there (see commentary of Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra).

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 31:7-9

In the presence of the nation, Moshe

Moshe instructs the people in the mitzvah of hakhel. Just after the end of every seventh year of the agricultural cycle (Shemitah), on Succot, all the people are to gather in Jerusalem, young and old, to hear the king read parts of the Torah.

Hearing these words will encourage learning Torah and fear of G-d.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 31:14-19

G-d calls Moshe and Yehoshua to stand by the entrance to the Tent of Meeting (Ohel Moed), where He tells them that the nation will turn against Him and follow other G-ds. G-d’s anger will flare against Israel, and he will “hide His face” from them, as if He is unaware of their sufferings (Rashi). G-d commands Moshe to write the Song of Ha’azinu, (next week’s sidra), and teach it to the people (Rashi).

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 31:20-24

G-d continues with His message. After He brings the nation to the Land “which flows with milk and honey”, excessive enjoyment of that abundance will lead them to idol worship. Reading the Song of Ha’azinu (the following sidra) will remind them that they were warned of the consequences of rebellion.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 31:25-30

Moshe finishes writing the Sefer Torah and tells the Levi’im to place it next to the Aron (Ark). Moshe notes that in his lifetime, the people have been “rebellious

and stiff-necked” and that this will carry on after his death.

HAFTARAH

This is a special haftarah, read on Shabbat Shuva, between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. It is made up of three parts, from the Biblical prophets Hoshea, Yoel and Micha. The first part calls on Israel to return to G-d; even after sinning, their return will be lovingly accepted. The second part emphasises that our Teshuva (return/repentance) has to be sincere and heartfelt, not superficial. The last section states that G-d is unique in His readiness to pardon.

After fasting a light and nutritious salad is a good start – this recipe provides all the feel-good ingredients for a nourishing side dish as part of your meal. Enjoy cold or warm.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 6 Main ingredients Salad 200g uncooked quinoa, rinsed 200g frozen edamame 1 medium raw beetroot, peeled and slice 1 large carrot - peeled 100g baby spinach 50g slivered almonds - toasted 50 pumpkin seeds – toasted

Method 1. To cook the quinoa: First, rinse the quinoa in a fine mesh colander under running water for a minute or two. In a medium-sized pot, combine the rinsed quinoa and 200ml water. Bring to Dressing the boil, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.

3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2. To cook the edamame: Bring a saucepan of water to boil, then add the frozen edamame and 2 tablespoons lime juice cook just until the beans are warmed through, about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.

1-2 tablespoon olive oil 3. Grate the carrots and beetroot either using a spiralizer, vegetable slicer or mandolin.

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 4. For the dressing, whisk together all the ingredients until emulsified 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup or agave nectar To assemble the salad: In your large serving bowl, combine the toasted almonds and pump½ to 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, to taste kin seeds, cooked edamame, prepared beetroots and carrot, roughly chopped spinach and cooked quinoa.

Pinch salt 5. Finally, drizzle dressing over the mixture and gently toss to combine.

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Breaking The Fast, the International Way! The Torah clearly states that it is a requirement to fast on Yom Kippur as a means of putting our human cravings to one side and to focus on trying to obtain the highest level of spirituality through praying and forgiveness. Fasting is an expression of undisturbed faith and taking the lead from angels who, of course, have no need to eat.

Although there are clear instructions to fast, how we end the fast varies enormously by geography, age and family background.

Sephardi, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi Jews all have their own customs and traditions and to prepare this article I have interviewed numerous friends and contacts to find out the details of how they ‘break The Fast’.

One family friend of Egyptian origin, break their Fast with copious cups of black coffee and kahk which are savoury bracelets or round bread sticks coated with sesame seeds or cumin seeds, cheese sambousaks (cheese pastries) and a selection of salads normally including aubergine. Another popular dish is ‘ful medames’; this is a vegetarian dish made with brown lentils, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, chopped parsley and their special tradition is to include some humous and boiled egg as the topping.

Moving across the world to Eastern Europe, the custom of a friend with Romanian

heritage is to break their Fast with cups of sweet black tea and slices of honey cake.

Honey was considered with high regard for its health associated ingredients and many families kept beehives to ensure the purest best honey for this purpose.

Over in Sweden, the table is set out with jugs of water, wine, coke, vegetable soup and vanilla sponge cake with lots of icing sugar. Sliced challah is plated up to be served with cheese, pickles and other deli favourites.

However, in the US, my twin sister who lives in Florida, and because most people who live in Florida were not born there, a tradition has grown up of celebrating together as community rather than at home. There is therefore no ‘Florida tradition’ it is a blend of the traditions from where they originated.

In her synagogue, there are families from Israel, New York, Australia, South Africa and Europe. The communal ‘Break the Fast’ is sponsored by members and is quite an extensive meal offering smoked salmon, bagels, hot chicken, cold cuts, salads, rice, fresh fruit and cakes.

Vayeilech Vayeilech Word Search Vayeilech Our kind leader Moshe, who has put up with us and constantly asked Hashem to forgive us, is nearing the end of his final speech to us.

We are given the special Mitzva of writing a sefer Torah, perhaps you know someone who donated one to a shul, or perhaps you know someone who paid towards one. Remember how excited you were when it was carried through the streets with music and candles?

It’s actually really good to accompany the Torah with

music as in the Parsha, the Torah is compared to a song.

It is a song that has been sung for three thousand years now and we are so lucky to be the star performers of it.

Then we are taught a Mitzva that is done only once in seven years. The king would come to the Beis Hamikdash and read the Torah to Jews of all ages - yes even your little brother or sister would come! Let’s hope we get the Beis Hamikdash back soon so we can see all the good things that went on there and enjoy being in Hashem’s house!

Yom Kippur Yom Kippur – wow we have heard so much about this – the holiest day of the year! Did someone wave some money around your head before shul? Perhaps a parent or Rabbi gave you a blessing? It is such a special moment and a time for giving charity, prayer and asking people to forgive us.

When the Beit Hamikdash stood, the courtyard would be crowded, full of Jews who would wait to catch a peek at the Kohen Godol’s shining face as he left the Kodesh Hakodoshim, having begged Hashem to forgive the Jewish people and give everyone a wonderful year. Today, we can only wish and pray that we will be able to be part of that in our lifetime, but

until then we have so many chances to be part of so many wonderful groups of Jews who put a smile on the face of others and cheer lonely or sad people up. We ask Hashem to erase all our Aveiros, (yes, like an eraser completely gets rid of pencil marks you don’t want) and we come away from Yom Kippur feeling fresh and starting a new slate.

We will find ourselves in shul at some point of the day – maybe next to an adult and we watch how they, the Rabbi and Chazzan treat the day with such respect and we consider how special it is to be able to feel close to Hashem and ask him to give us all a happy and sweet new year.

Dear Marc We have a financial dilemma. My spouse and I are retired. We don’t want our children to have to pay 40% inheritance tax but we also might need care in the future and don’t want to have to be dependent on our children. We own a second property which is rented out and have various savings and investments. Is there a way to mitigate inheritance tax and keep control and access to our money for now ?

Mr and Mrs Cohen Dear Mr and Mrs Cohen Your dilemma is a common one! A competent adviser will be able to direct you through all the important issues you should consider and decisions you need to make to reduce your estate’s inheritance tax liability. Gifting to your children is an option for mitigating inheritance tax. However, this option presents two problems. Firstly, it takes 7 years for the gift to fully exit your estate for tax purposes. You might not have that long before you pass away! Secondly once you gift, you lose access and control of that money/asset. Therefore, it’s not a viable option as you would have to be dependent on your children’s generosity to meet your potential care needs.

An attractive alternative option you ought to consider is investing in assets that qualify for Business Relief. The benefits of this option are that it only takes ownership of two years for those assets to be deemed exempt from inheritance tax and you can retain access and control of your money indefinitely. No gifting is required. If you hold these investments at death and they have been held more than two years, these investments will be exempt from inheritance tax. You can also use these investments to pay for your prospective care costs. Investments that qualify for Business Relief come in various forms and with different advantages and disadvantages as well as risks to each investment. Seek advice for an appropriate investment.
