Celebrations set for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Celebrations galore mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the coming days.

The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years on February 6th. To honour seven decades service to the United Kingdom, Realms and Commonwealth, initiatives throughout the year culminate in a four-day UK bank holiday celebration starting Thursday.

Celebrations begin on Thursday morning (11am) with Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade for the Queen’s official birthday parade. An RAF fly-past will be watched by Royal Family members on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with Prince Andrew, will not appear.

The 1st Battalion, Irish Guards and over 1200 officers and soldiers from the Household Division will put on a display of military pageantry with hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses.

This annual event, which includes a Royal Gun Salute, has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years. Huge crowds are expected to watch.

The day sees 1,500 beacons lit

across the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories for the occasion. The ‘principal’ beacon will be lit at Buckingham Palace. Beacons will also be lit in all 54 capital cities of the Commonwealth.

A Service of Thanksgiving takes place at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday.

The Princess Royal, accompanied by Royal Family members, will attend the Epsom Derby at the weekend.

Another high will be the Platinum Party at the Palace with a night of musical tributes and Platinum Jubilee Pageant which brings to life iconic moments from The Queen’s reign featuring military personnel, dancers, puppets of corgis and a performance

by Ed Sheeran.

It has been reported that there will be an estimated 16,000 street parties with bunting aplenty as part of the Big Jubilee lunch across the country to mark the Royal occasion.

Buckingham Palace has announced that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other senior royals will tour the UK over the Bank Holiday Jubilee weekend. Prince William and Catherine will visit Wales, the Earl and Countess of Wessex will be in Northern Ireland, and the

Princess Royal will visit Scotland. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will also attend events in London.

Meantime, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall have filmed being guest stars for a ‘Royal’ EastEnders episode. And eight new cities have been named as part of the Platinum Jubilee including Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands and Douglas, Isle of Man. The title has been granted to Colchester, Doncaster and Milton Keynes in England, Dunfermline, in Scotland, Wrexham in Wales and Bangor in Northern Ireland.

Further afield, Australia has named an island in Canberra in the Queen’s honour. Aspen Island on Lake Burley Griffin has been renamed Queen Elizabeth II Island.

Special television programming features include the documentary The Crown Jewels presented by Clive Myrie and the Queen’s Jubilee Pudding: 70 years in the Baking with Mary Berry.

Royal Family members have already made a series of tours as part of the celebrations.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited Canada and Ireland. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge toured Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.

Bennett calls for Jerusalem to be a “united” city

70,000 Israelis participated in the Jerusalem Day flag parade on Sunday.

Marchers passed through the Old City to the Western Wall to mark the 55th anniversary of the ‘reunification’ of Jerusalem after the 1967 Six Day War. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called on marchers to ensure Jerusalem remains a “united” city.

During the day there was dancing in the streets before the main rally which passed without major incidents although Jewish extremist groups La Familia and Lahava chanted anti-Palestinian slogans.

There were sporadic clashes in the Old City while a record 2,600 Jews visited Temple Mount before Police removed them from the site. Over 3,000 police officers were on duty and used crowd control measures in Sheikh Jarrah. Two police officers were amongst a reported 13 people treated for light injuries.

Sixty people were arrested for disorderly conduct.

Bennett warned of “zero tolerance” to violence by extremists.

Israeli leaders stood firm to appeals from US Ambassador Thomas Nides and European leaders to change the route used for three decades.

President Isaac Herzog said, “Our connection to Jerusalem is eternal and inseparable.

There is only one Jerusalem, it is united and Israeli.”

Israeli planes patrolled the Gaza Strip over fears of rocket launches after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh warned of a surge in violence in Jerusalem.

Bennett spoke about Jerusalem Day at the start of his weekly cabinet meeting.

“Fifty-five years ago, IDF soldiers liberated the Old City and unified Jerusalem. This was an event that united the entire nation.

Flying the Israeli flag in the capital of Israel is self-evident. I request participants celebrate responsibly.”

Herzog remembered Israel’s fallen soldiers in the Six-Day War and War of Attrition on Mount Herzl at a memorial and recalled his father, Maj. Gen. Chaim Herzog, serving

as the “national soother” as Kol Israel Radio’s military commentator.

“He described the stages of the war, step by step, and of course the moments of victory, our return to a united Jerusalem,” he said. “Every child will speak of this until the day he dies.

Herzog said the War of Attrition was a “demanding and protracted war” along the border with Egypt.

“In both wars we had our warriors’ heroism, courage, determination, commitment to their goal, devotion, and sacrifice,” he said. “These warriors were, in my father’s words, “the silver platter that became the golden gate of Jerusalem”.

the nation and homeland.

“The recent terror wave has caused us immense pain, but it does not weaken us.

We are ready and prepared for any scenario.”

With the event going to plan in terms of security issues and planning Bennett thanked Public Security Minister and Israel Police for maintaining public order.

“The event was very significant because if we hadn’t done it along the regular route, we would never go back to it. This could have been a retreat on sovereignty. We set the record straight that in the State of Israel we will operate based on what is right and not based on threats. Except for an extremist group, whom we will deal with to the fullest extent of the law, those who celebrated yesterday did so in a very special, heart-lifting way.”

Bennett appoints Hajioff special adviser Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has appointed Keren Hajioff as Special Adviser for Foreign Affairs and Communications.

Hajioff (32) previously served as Spokesperson of the Northern Command and Head of the Public Diplomacy in the IDF. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in political communications Keren Hajioff from Bar-Ilan University. Hajioff currently serves as the Bennett’s Foreign Media Adviser. She made aliyah from the UK in 2009.

Bennett also appointed Eden Bizman as Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister’s Bureau.

Bizman has been serving as Deputy Director General of the Bennett’s office and previously served as Deputy Director General of the State Comptroller and Public Ombudsman prior to senior adviser to the Education Minister.

Bizman (36) is married and a father of four children. He holds a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in business administration from Bar-Ilan. Bizman assumes his office in the coming days subject to the approval of the Civil Service Commission.

Bennett wished both Hajioff and Bizman success in their respective posts.

Thank you volunteers for the amazing work you do I was fortunate to have a sabbatical from work and wanted to take on some volunteering roles during that time. I had a general idea of the type of role I wanted, but didn’t know what opportunities may be available to me and that’s where JVN proved invaluable.

I registered with JVN, they suggested various positions and connected me with the charities concerned.

I spent time at New Chapters (Langdon) collecting books with Langdon Members and as a gardening and allotments volunteer at Jewish Care’s Sandringham site.

Going through the process of finding volunteering roles with JVN showed me that there are numerous charities doing wonderful work and seeking volunteers as well as a vast variety of roles to suit any volunteer.

Whatever time you may have to volunteer, you’re sure to find a role to suit. It’s a win-win situation.

The charities will benefit from your help, and you’ll be doing something worthwhile that you’ll really enjoy. JVN was the key to me finding the appropriate and fulfilling roles.

Herzog salutes Ethiopian Jews

President Isaac Herzog remembered the Ethiopian Jews who died on a perilous, dangerous journey to Israel at a State ceremony at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on Sunday.

During an impassioned address Herzog praised those that survived “thousands of miles of wandering” through Sudan to the Land of Israel during events to mark Jerusalem Day. Herzog recalled a halachic ruling by his grandfather Rabbi Yitzhak Isaac HaLevi Herzog for the Ethiopian aliyah.

“I salute the fact that behind this gruelling journey was a spirit of genuine leadership,” he said. “It is doubtful whether members of the community knew, before they left Ethiopia, what the long trek through the desert held in store for them. It is doubtful whether they imagined the dangers that would follow them on their way through such a hostile country as Sudan. This uncertainty was compensated for by great faith and deep determination. You proved your boundless love for the Holy Land and for the State of Israel.”

Herzog added, “We remember their tragic fate, but we wish to keep their lives alive in our hearts, their stories, their heroism, their unimaginable strength, their cultural wealth, the identity of the community of Ethiopian Jewry, which is an inseparable

and formative part of the Israeli and Jewish ethos, which is an organic part of the body of our nation.

“The journey you made, the journey of those who did not live to complete the journey, is the journey of us all. The journey of the People of Israel. We must remember and recall this story. We must hand it down, teach it to our daughters and sons, from generation to generation, till the last

generation. This is our obligation. And this is our great privilege.”

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett told guests that the people of Israel will never again be divided.

“We mark not only the unity of our capital Jerusalem but also the unity of our people,” he said, “Even in the most fervent debate we will not compare our brothers to the worst of our enemies.”

BDS movement fuels antisemitism

Communities Secretary Michael Gove has warned the Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel is fuelling antisemitic incidents in the UK. Gove condemned the BDS movement in a passionate speech to the Charadi Jewish community in Stamford Hill which has suffered a spate of hate crimes in recent months.

“The BDS campaign is not about running an ethical foreign policy”, he stated, “It’s designed for only one purpose, to attack and delegitimise the State of Israel and the idea that there should be a Jewish state at all”.

Gove added, “It’s critically important that we call out the BDS campaign for what it is, an explicitly antisemitic campaign.

Gove said that the campaign undermined efforts for peace in the Middle East and increased community tension in the UK. “We’ve seen an increase in antisemitic incidents and the BDS campaign is a driver of that,” he noted.

“We have got to make it clear that local authorities and other public bodies should not be running campaigns that subvert the

Gove explained that he was “grateful” to cross-party MPs who “understand the importance of fighting antisemitism and who support this legislation”.

Gove also spoke about “double standards” used by the BDS movement, and expressed disapproval at “different standards” that Israel is held compared to “other atrocities that genuinely deserve our attention”.

The Communities Secretary said it was important to take a stand against the BDS movement and antisemitism.

“What begins as prejudice against the Jewish people takes us to the darkest place humanity has known,” he noted.

Gove’s comments followed government action to combat BDS in the UK in recent months.

At a CFI Parliamentary Reception earlier this month Home Secretary Priti Patel stated, “Everything we have seen around the BDS movement is racist”.

In February, an amendment to the Public Service Pension Bill preventing public service pension funds from being misused to target Israel through divestments was adopted with the Government’s support.

Gove’s visit came days after a Jewish member of staff at Egg Stores’ kosher supermarket reportedly experienced antisemitic abuse. Police are investigating a man allegedly telling a woman, “Hitler should have killed all you Jews. I will be back.”

The incident was reported by Stamford Hill Shomrim.

Copenhagen Jewish festival has 90 events The Jewish Cultural Festival of Copenhagen opens this week.

The 12-day programme includes films, talks and concerts. There are 90 events making it one of the the biggest Jewish cultural festivals in Europe.

In keeping with tradition, there will be concerts at the synagogue. Ehud Banai, one of Israel’s most popular artists, performs with the Eyal Lovett’s Trio. The Yamma Ensemble also plays Middle Eastern music.

Since its inception in 2011 the festival has reached out to the community and expanded its partnerships and venues through Jette and Jacob Zylber. “We’ve wanted to go outside the walls for a long time,” they said in a statement. “Although we have good conditions in Krystalgade, we come out to a different audience and that creates a different atmosphere. This year we’ve brought in the Bellevue Theatre, where the Portuguese ballet company Quorum will perform. We also have several events at the National Museum and Cinemateket, and Børsen and Trinitatis Church are also participating.”

There will be an opportunity to go around Copenhagen on a Jewish city walk. And a bike ride linked to Jewish history has been organised by the Danish Jewish Museum.

For family audiences the last day of the festival includes the professional circus duo Volantes.

World faces “new normal” after Covid-19

The world is “drastically different” from the reality put on hold following the COVID-19 pandemic President Isaac Herzog told delegates at the 2022 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Israel’s leader gave a wide-ranging address where he discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Abraham Accords, Iran and recent terror attacks.

Millions of lives had been lost in the pandemic followed by the war in Ukraine.

He concluded, “Too much has happened over these two years for us to go back to the old normal. We cannot treat our future as we have done in the past. We must change, breaking paradigms, setting ambitious goals and committing to overcome every obstacle.

“Israel remains fully committed to freedom of religion and worship, to deep respect towards all faiths in the Holy Land, and of course to upholding democratic values. By working with countries and nations of the region, with the support of this distinguished World Economic Forum, we have an opportunity to build a future of peace, prosperity and progress. Let us work towards this Renewable Middle East cultivating a shared sustainable future for all of our children.”

Norwood’s 70 years of Royal Partronage As the only Jewish charity to have the honour of The Queen as our patron, Norwood has always been incredibly proud of our long association with Her Majesty and the wider Royal Family. Our staff and the people we support have enduring memories of her visits to our services over the years, and of the warmth and grace she shows, and which have characterised her reign. Residents like Julian, who remembers The Queen arriving for her last visit to our Adult Services in 2008. He was a part of a crowd chosen to form her official welcoming part waving flags. Not everyone could accompany her on her visit inside, due to security reasons, so the people we support and staff all lined the driveway to greet her with banners and cheering. Julian was introduced to The Queen as a part of a line. They were told ahead of time they didn’t have to bow or curtsey, but Julian elected to bow. Julian showed her his easy-read contract and explained easy read to her. He remembers her being extremely interested in what he had to say, which Norwood Honorary Vice President David Ereira corroborates.

He remembers that whilst the visit had been styled as a formal one ahead of time, The Queen had made it clear that she didn’t want any pomp and ceremony or to meet the great and good of our community, she really wanted to meet the residents. She arrived with her lady in waiting and a sergeant at arms and that was it. She came in and the first thing she

did was to walk over to some of our residents who were in wheelchairs and she introduced herself to them in the most wonderful, warm way. She said ‘thank you for having me, I’m so pleased to be with you today and I can see that everyone’s happy and it’s a very joyful place’.”

Throughout Norwood’s 226-year history, it’s enjoyed the patronage of successive members of the Royal family, beginning with the Duke of Sussex in 1815. On acceding to the throne in 1952, The Queen upheld the precedent set by four former sovereigns, including her late father King George VI, of becoming royal patron of the organisation previously known as The Jews’ Hospital and Orphan Asylum.

The Queen’s visits have become a significant part of our charity’s history. Her first in 1985 was to attend a reception at London’s Guildhall to mark the 190th anniversary of the charity. Her second visit in 2008 saw her meet with staff and people Norwood supports and to open a new residential home for adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

As the people we support gather in their homes to pay tribute to our patron’s magnificent 70-year reign, with a Jubilee bingo, crafts, quiz and cream tea, they’ll be celebrating our shared history and commitment to making progress to achieving a truly inclusive society, where people with a range of learning disabilities and autism are supported to live fulfilling and meaningful lives at the heart of their communities.

For over two years the US has been supporting 150 families and individuals with weekly food parcels.

Many people lost some or all of their income during the pandemic and could no longer make ends meet.

The charity expects this number to rise given the rising cost of food and energy bills. As a result, the US launched a food collection campaign this week which coincided with World Hunger Day last Sunday.

Each US shul will be asked to collect specific items such as tinned goods, store cupboard essentials and toiletries.

The US will arrange for donation boxes to be available at shuls and in local areas until June 28th.

An anonymous beneficiary said, “Our family has been fortunate enough to benefit from receiving the US food parcels and meals delivery scheme. We are a large

family and the regular deliveries relieve significant stress, worry and financial burden. I am unable to articulate the delight on my children’s faces (and the relief on mine) whilst unpacking the deliveries. We are indebted and beyond grateful to all the generous donors. If you are able to support the scheme so other families can benefit, please do so.

Dr Ellie at Camp Simcha ladies lunch

NHS and TV GP, Dr Ellie Cannon, joined more than 170 guests at Camp Simcha’s Ladies Lunch in support of families with seriously ill children.

In an interview with journalist Suzanne Baum, Dr Ellie, who worked for the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health throughout the pandemic to promote sensible Covid information, told guests, at The Sorting Office in Temple Fortune, about her career as a GP in the media.

Dr Ellie is the resident GP for the Mail on Sunday, as well as one of the family of doctors on ITV This Morning and BBC Breakfast.

The interview also focused on women’s health, menopause and mental health, which Dr Ellie has talked about previously on ITV’s This Morning, sharing her own experience with anxiety.

“I feel it is important to speak out personally about mental illness because it is still shrouded in stigma, perhaps even more so in the Jewish community,” explained Dr Ellie. “The more open we all are about this, the more we break that stigma.

“I think it is great that Camp Simcha now supports families who have a child with a serious mental health condition. It is just as hard for a family coping with their child’s mental illness as a physical one; the support services Camp Simcha offers can really make a vital difference in how the family cope.”

Guests also heard moving accounts from two Camp Simcha mums Kimberley Gabriel and Nikki Bloom.

Nikki, whose son Joey was diagnosed with a Wilms’ Tumour in the summer of 2020, explained that his diagnosis came during a post lockdown holiday in France.

“Without Camp Simcha I dread to think of how we’d have crawled our way to where we are now. Their support was vital. I shout from the roof tops about Camp Simcha and what an unbelievably special charity it is, filled to the brim with truly wonderful people, I always say the same thing; they knew what I needed before I did, they have lifted us as a family, cradled us and will only let go when we’re truly ready.”

Seder Limmud Last Thursday evening, Shtieble Prestwich held a memorable Seder Limmud in memory of a long-standing Mispalel of the Shul whose Sheloshim ended that The Seder Limmud night. Mr Phil Huller o”H was a beloved member of the Shul, the first to Minyonim and Shiurim and was also active in looking after the Shul building and its maintenance with love until he moved into Beenstock Home a number of years ago. He did not leave behind any children and so this Seder Limmud was arranged as a way to perpetuate his legacy.

R’ Ezer Shwalbe opened proceedings with a short message which he said over from emeritus Rabbi Shmuel Goldberg Shlita (who was away and therefore unable to participate) and added some of his own memories of Mr Huller’s dedication to Shul and to the Shiurim for many, many years.

Led by the Rov, Rabbi Yisroel Rose Shlita, the entire Beis Hamedrash soon filled with the sweet sound of Kol Torah as everyone learnt a part of Meseches Beitza which had been divided out in preparation for the event. Many of Mr Huller’s friends and Mispallelim were present and all enjoyed learning for this special occasion.

Greater Manchester Police brought in the Army Bomb Disposal team to make safe a cache of weapons found buried on Kersal Moor in the heart of the Jewish community in Salford. Several residents including some Jewish families had to be evacuated. All ended peacefully.

Pajes hold Wellbeing event PaJeS held an online Wellbeing & Me session last month for over 550 parents.

Dr Tara Porter, a clinical psychologist and writer, led the ‘Understanding girls: managing anxiety, navigating friendships and striving for perfection’ event.

Porter evaluated girls experiences today compared to the past, mental health challenges and the environment they grow up in. Differences included technological changes related to social media, expectations regarding education and workplace, global connectedness and competition.

think about how family, friends, school, community and wider society impact youngsters as each can affect anxiety. She offered suggestions to cope with anxiety rather than try fix or exacerbate a problem, spoke about the importance of empathic listening and to avoid giving advice to solve problems.

Porter also answered questions on managing exam stress, peer pressure, being a ‘good enough’ parent and drawing the line between listening and advising.

Feedback was positive and further events are planned.

Chana the leading fertility charity in the UK was delighted to welcome back its’ annual Car Rally after a long 3-year break.

Nearly 100 men were delighted to be back behind the wheel to drive the tough topics of infertility and loss into the spotlight.

Rabbi Moshe Levy, guided the audience on a journey through the eyes of a couple suffering the loneliness and isolation of the Jewish calendar with no children by their side.

Johnny Marks one of Chana’s therapists read an emotional letter written by a Chana client detailing their heart-breaking journey through the loss of their baby daughter, their grief and Chana’s support towards their path of acceptance. In a room full of guests, overwhelmed with emotions, this honest and raw account openly highlighted the role Chana plays in holding couples through their most painful and lonely moments.

The aim of this year’s Car Rally was to

launch the Illuminate fund. As the demand and strain on the NHS continue to increase, couples that suffer stillbirths, miscarriages and/or genetic issues have become hard to prioritise and continue to fall to the bottom of the list. Even those prepared to pursue private options face a maze of overwhelming information and are left floundering.

They feel invisible to the system. As a direct result, many new couples in crisis are turning to Chana for urgent support. The Illuminate Fund shines a light on these invisible couples, and will allow Chana to open pathways to information, investigations and treatments, lighting the way through these challenging journeys.

MDA UK’s Hendon Committee host first face-to-face event since Covid-19 Last Wednesday Magen David Adom UK’s Hendon Committee hosted their first faceto-face event since the pandemic began. 70 guests attended a buffet lunch at Hendon United Synagogue, where MDA UK’s Chief Executive, Daniel Burger, spoke alongside keynote speaker Eric Shapiro, who told the fascinating story of the House of Rothschild.

In May, Magen David Adom unveiled its state-of-the-art Marcus National Blood Services Centre in Ramla, which was built over five years at a cost of £90 million

and funded by a three-way partnership between MDA UK, American Friends of MDA and the Government of Israel. One contribution came from a generous legacy gift from artist Harry Fuld which included Nazi-restituted art, the first piece of which is now displayed in Frankfurt Jewish Museum, located in one of the Houses of Rothschild.

Over the last two years, MDA UK’s Hendon Committee has also raised an incredible £125,000 towards the Marcus National Blood Services Centre.

The Seed Shul in Edgware welcomed over 250 guests on Thursday evening for its official naming “Beis Moshe v’Chaya” - dedicated by the Grunfeld family in memory of Mr and Mrs M Grunfeld z”l. The occasion was also a celebration of over 40 years since Seed was founded by National Director Rabbi Joey Grunfeld, who is now moving from Golders Green to Manchester. Special

guest Rabbi Yehudah Silver spoke about the eternal ability of the Jewish people to achieve the seemingly impossible, and challenged the new shul to constantly strive upwards and upwards. Rabbi Grunfeld said of the event: “I was so touched to see so many wonderful faces who have been such a big part of Seed over the years, some of whom I hadn’t seen since the 1990s!”

On the 26th May LSJS held its third annual National Jewish Education Conference for Secondary School Teachers – but the first in person! Chief Rabbi Mirvis, LSJS President, opened the conference and spoke about the importance of appreciating good teachers.

The keynote address was given by Rachel Levitt Klein Dratch, Director of Educational Innovation at Prizmah in the United States, looked at ‘Covid, the hi-tech revolution and my classroom: Where does Jewish education go from here?’. Rachel also spent time visiting several Jewish schools and speaking to the Heads of Jewish Studies of the Secondary schools.

Dear Rabbi Now that we’re all gearing up to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, some of us might catch a glimpse of HRH in person and certainly on the telly. I was told there is a blessing to be recited.

Is this true and could you share with readers what that blessing is?

Sandy Dear Sandy The Talmud states categorically that there is an obligation to recite a special blessing when seeing a monarch. Jewish law codifies this by stating the blessing, Baruch etc. she’noson mikvodo l’basar v’dam. (“Who has bestowed from His glory upon mankind”) However, the Talmud is vague as to the definition of “monarch” and what kind of authority they must have. This is a matter of debate in the codifiers. Several maintain that an actual monarch requires a blessing regardless of their abilities and duties.

Some even specify in particular our Queen as requiring a blessing. However, they are all of the view that this applies only when seeing the monarch in person, and not any other way.

WHAT’S SHAVUOT GOT TO DO WITH IT?

Dear Rabbi Platinum Jubilee followed by Shavuot. Talk about one long extended holiday. Is there a message in there somewhere?

Efrim Dear Efrim I remember my father a”h once telling me how he was in Luton airport heading to Holland to

deliver a lecture. At one point he wandered into an area that was devoid of any people. He couldn’t quite understand it.

Then he looks up and lo and behold he’s standing literally within arm’s length of her majesty the Queen. He said, “I could literally touch her.”

Apparently he wandered past some cordoned off area, and, as this was mid 90’s we were still a little less security conscientious, so no one pounced on him. It was the Queen’s jubilee year and she was opening up a new wing in the airport as part of the yearlong celebrations. And then he stood there deliberating: “Do I or don’t I make a blessing?”

Most of us would be standing there thinking, “Oh my, it’s the Queen,” maybe even move in for a selfie, but my father stood there pondering the halachic implications of Queen Elizabeth.

When he finally concluded, in what really just a few seconds, that yes, he should recite a blessing, she was already gone.

The moment passed him by.

When the Torah was given to us at Sinai we were proclaimed a mamlechet kohanim – a regal nation. We all became kings and queens as it were, tasked with the responsibility of being trailblazers of morality to society.

The way to go about that is prescribed in the Torah. Inasmuch as we were given the gift of the Torah on Shavuot, our Sages tell us that every day we should consider the Torah as though given anew. This means there’s tremendous opportunity that presents itself daily by which we are able to make significant differences and maintain our regal bearing. You could literally reach out and seize those

opportunities. Don’t hesitate and risk letting the moments pass you by.

JEWS & THE JUBILEE

Dear Rabbi Should the Jewish community get involved in celebrating the Queen’s jubilee? Do we even recognise such milestones in Judaism?

Harris Dear Harris Milestones are important and recognised in Judaism. The Mishna in Ethics of the Fathers talks about the significance of reaching milestone birthdays, from ages 5 through 100.

The Torah itself talks about the importance of a jubilee year.

This was celebrated in a big way, with special rituals both in the Temple and throughout Israel.

Fifty years is a special milestone and the Torah instructs that every fifty years in Israel should be recognised as such.

But what was the underlying point of all the celebration and commemoration? Was it merely to mark the milestone, or was it something more? The Hebrew for jubilee is Yovel, which comes from the root word havalah which means to move forward.

In other words, take this moment and move forward with it. It was a very significant year.

Most people would have only ever lived through one. Today, you would be more likely to live through two. But that’s it. It’s a unique moment in time and if you were fortunate enough to be there, to experience it, then you cannot allow the moment to pass you by. You have to Yovel – let the moment move you forward. Consolidate the

experience and the inspiration up until this point and build upon it as you enter into the next fifty years.

Quite curiously, the Torah sometimes uses a different term to describe the Jubilee year – Olam. We know the word to ordinarily translate as “world.”

Why then is it also used to describe the Jubilee year? Because, I suggest to you, this milestone is essentially a transformative experience and moment in time.

Indeed we find other instances where fifty is a transformative phase in Jewish life and living.

For example, the Jewish people left Egypt, counted forty-nine days, and on the fiftieth day they were given the Torah and proclaimed G-d’s nation. They were leaving one life and entering into another. It was a whole new world. In Temple times, a Levite was only allowed to do service in the Temple until the age of fifty. That was his world up until that point, and now he is moving on into something else. So fifty

“Whoever learns Torah as a poor man will merit to learn it as a rich man. And vice versa, anyone who neglects Torah study as a wealthy man will end up neglecting it as a poor man.”

As Rabbi Moishe Weiss writes, people will always have excuses not to do something. It’s too hard. It’s too early. It’s too late. Gemoroh is too fast. I need to learn slowly. I would but I am too busy. Our Rabbi tells us that every person is capable of making time to learn Torah and no one can ever say they couldn’t learn at all. No one is that busy. In heaven if they hear someone say he was too poor, they bring our the famous Hillel, who was so poor that he could not afford

the entrance fee to the Beit Hamidrash and famously was found unconscious on the rooftop, desperate to hear words of Torah whilst shivering on the rooftop in the freezing snow. They will ask if you were poorer than him? Look how much Torah he learned!

If you say you were too busy, or too good looking and were involved with world affairs, they will wheel out Yosef Hatzadik. A famous rabbi in the Talmud was so wealthy his servants didn’t even recognise him as he had so many, and others were so rich they travelled on a golden chair carried by their servants. Yet all the above made time for Torah.

One of the primary rituals during the Jubilee year in Israel was the blowing of the Shofar. The commentaries explain that the shofar was sounded for one and all to hear reminding everyone that, they are all in this together.

Nothing strengthens the spirit of mankind like universal public action. The fact that everybody is a part of it is the greatest source of encouragement.

If the Queen is marking a platinum jubilee, which, to be frank, anyone celebrating will only ever do so once in a lifetime; and bearing in mind we live in, and benefit from, a benevolent host country, then as the occasion is being marked in a special way, it is only right that we appreciate that we are all in this together and we should get in on the action. With a yearning and a prayer that we will all be propelled from the experience as a united people and a healthy and prosperous nation.

Perek 4: Mishna 9 day and so can we. So we MUST! If we all look carefully and honestly at our daily and weekly schedules we can all find little pockets of time here and there to add Hashem’s Torah into our lives. Read a book. Attend a shiur. Watch a shiur online. Five minutes less Netflix per day adds up to 2.5 hours per month of Torah. The Chofetz Chaim did a calculation in his book Torat Habayit, where he calculated how many words a person can say in a minute to work out how many mitzvot you can achieve. As we approach the festival of Torah, let us use this Shavuot to reconnect with Torah like never before, Amen!

“God spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai” (Bemidbar 1:1)

Sidra Summary Shimon 59,300; Gad 45,650; Yehuda 74,600; Yissachar 54,400; Zevulun 57,400; Ephraim 40,500; Menashe 32,200; Binyamin 35,400; Dan 62,700; Asher 41,500; Naftali 53,400. This comes to a total of 603,550 men. The tribe of Levi is not counted with the rest of the tribes. They are assigned to dismantle and transport the Mishkan (Tabernacle) when the nation travels in the desert, as well as to guard the Mishkan when it is stationary.

3RD ALIYA (SHLISHI) – 2:1-34

On Rosh Chodesh of the second month after the Exodus from Egypt, G-d instructs Moshe and Aharon to take a census of men above the age of 20. (The Talmud adds that men above 60 were not counted). The leader of each tribe is to be present when his tribe is counted. The name of each leader is stated. The census is carried out as commanded.

G-d tells Moshe and Aharon how to position the 12 tribes (other than Levi) around the Mishkan. They are to be organised into four groups of three tribes, each group led by one particular tribe.

To the east of the Mishkan are the tribes of Yehuda, Yissachar and Zevulun, led

by Yehuda. To the south are the tribes of Reuven, Shimon and Gad, led by Reuven.

To the west are the tribes of Ephraim, Menashe and Binyamin, led by Ephraim.

To the north are the tribes of Dan, Asher and Naftali, led by Dan.

2ND ALIYA (LEVI) – 1:20-54

1ST ALIYA (KOHEN) – BEMIDBAR 1:1-19

The Torah lists the results of the census.

The tribe of Reuven numbers 46,500;

Aharon’s sons are listed. G-d tells Moshe to bring the tribe of Levi to Aharon in

order to assist him in his work as the Kohen Gadol. The tribe of Levi is to take over the role that had been designated for the firstborn, who were sanctified on the night of the Exodus from Egypt, when the Egyptian firstborn were killed and they survived.

5TH ALIYA (CHAMISHI) – 3:14-39

G-d tells Moshe to count the men of the tribe of Levi, aged from one month upwards. The count is divided up into three main groups, according to the descendants of Levi’s three sons, Gershon, Kehat and Merari. Each main group, whose constituent families are also listed, is given a different location in relation to the Mishkan. The overall number of Levi’im counted in the census is 22,000.

6TH ALIYA (SHISHI) – 3:40-51

Moshe is told to count the male firstborn and to ‘replace’ them with the Levi’im.

The firstborn number 22,273. The extra 273 firstborn (over and above the 22,000

Levi’im) are to give five shekels each in order to redeem their status.

7TH ALIYA (SHEVI’I) – 4:1-19

The specific role of each of the three main families is now detailed, one in this week’s sidra, two in next week’s sidra. The family of Kehat are to take down, transport and reassemble the holy Ark (Aron), the Table (Shulchan), the Menorah, the Golden Altar (Mizbeach Ha’zahav) and the vessels used together with these features of the Mishkan.

HAFTARAH

The start of the haftarah is linked to the sidra, with the Children of Israel compared to “the sand of the sea, which can neither be measured nor counted”. The prophet Hoshea then goes on to liken the sinful Children of Israel to an unfaithful wife. However, they will eventually return to ‘their husband’ (G-d), who will take them back with kindness and mercy.

What’s Left of Mount Sinai?

How did we preserve the Divine Revelation at Mount Sinai, of G-d appearing to us amidst the mountain? What lasting memory was there of this epic event?

Remarkably, the way the Jewish People lived in the desert, as described in Parshat Bamidbar, was an exact model of the Revelation, their encircling camps reflected the order and structure of Matan Torah. The Sanctuary, representing Har Sinai, stood in the middle of the camp, “filled with G-d’s glory.” Its golden vessels symbolised the blazing fire that lit the mountain as “G-d descended upon it.” In the desert, Moshe heard G-d’s voice from atop the Ark just as he had heard it emanating from the peak of Mount Sinai. The formation of the tribes surrounding the Sanctuary were like the angelic groups that gathered around Mount Sinai on that “great and awesome day” (Ramban; R’ Bachya). Later, when the Jewish People settled in the Land of Israel, this same structure, perpetuating the memory of the Divine Revelation, was kept. The city of Jerusalem represented the outer camp

of Israel, the encircling tents of the tribes.

The Temple Mount represented the camp of Levi, and the holy chambers wherein symbolised G-d’s Sanctuary (Rambam).

In short, the very structure and layout of Matan Torah was preserved by how the Jewish People pitched their tents the desert and then in how they lived in the Land, the divine dwelling place always stood in the centre, surrounded by the People.

Sadly, this form is gone from us today (– although perhaps the layout of our Shuls is reminiscent of it). We no longer live in that ordered structure reflecting G-d’s appearance to us at Sinai. What remanent do we now have of “when we stood before G-d at Mount Chorev, when He commanded to Moshe: ‘assemble the people for Me and I will let them hear My words?’”

The philosophers speak of both form

and matter, and of objectivity and subjectivity. In other words, the outer shape of something and the inner material or experience within it. Somewhat similarly, we too can speak of those terms in regards to what we still have left of Har Sinai today. True, unlike in the desert or in the Jerusalem Temple, we are devoid of the form and outer structure of that epic Revelation, our houses and suburbs do not encircle the Divine camp. Nevertheless, nowadays, whenever we learn Torah, we still possess the matter, the inner content and personal sensation, we experienced at Mount Sinai.

Whenever a person studies Torah, he is replicating and re-experiencing the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, meeting and uncovering the Divine. As our Sages describe, “every day, an echo resounds from Mount Chorev… whoever learns Torah, the Divine presences rests upon

him.” Every question murmured by an unsure student and each Torah thought a child wrinkles his forehead over is part of that remarkable conversation that took place upon Mount Sinai, perpetuating Har Sinai (R’ Soloveitchik). Today, G-d joins our investigations of Torah as well, and the classroom exchanges of a teacher with his young charges is also “uttered

by G-d,” so-to-speak, a real-time, modern-day Revelation (Nefesh haChaim, chapter 4). Every act of learning Torah carries the memory and experience of that event of long ago.

So, the form and structure of the Divine Revelation, preserved in the desert encampments and by the Jerusalem Temple, is lost today. We are no longer physically assembled like we once were at Mount Sinai. However, we still preserve the experience of Har Sinai each time we open a sefer, debate a Torah topic, or think briefly about the Parsha. Whenever we study Torah, it is as if we are “standing before G-d at Mount Chorev… hearing His words.”

Shavuot: Why Did G-d Speak With Us

About twenty years ago, I arrived in Chicago’s O’Hare airport for my turnaround flight back to NYC. Entering the airport, I discovered that my flight was delayed.

At 1:00 AM, after several hours of waiting patiently, my flight was finally cleared for takeoff. I dragged my tired body onto the plane, taking my seat at the back of the plane, and courteously wishing a “pleasant flight” to the passenger next to me. Finally, after close to sixteen hours of teaching and lecturing, I could enjoy two hours of anonymity, where no one knew my name. Settling in to my gemara, I would soon discover that fate would not cooperate with my plans.

The person next to me curiously inquired about the book I was reading, and I politely responded that I was studying ancient Jewish law. He asked me which area of Jewish law I was reading. As I was studying maseches Niddah, I replied that I was reading about ancient “Jewish hygiene”. At which point he confessed to me that he was Jewish. Here I was, at 30,000 feet and, evidently, I would have a busier flight that I had anticipated.

We made small talk. He was a professor at MIT and I am a Rebbe at the Gush yeshiva, so right off the bat we shared common ground. After I offered him some pedagogic tips, he popped the question I was waiting for: “Rabbi, I always wondered what makes Judaism different from any other religion? After all, faith isn’t empirical but draws entirely from traditions handed down through the generations. Every major religion has its long-standing traditions, so what makes Judaism different?” It would be a long flight.

I explained to him that though Judaism is transmitted in a manner similar to other religions, the content of our tradition is radically different. Most religious traditions speak of miracle workers, dreams containing divine instructions, or personal prophecies. Our tradition asserts something entirely different: G-d spoke directly with an entire nation three million strong. This public revelation was broadly corroborated and could not be attributed to hallucination. No other religion has ever dared assert this audacious notion. We alone spoke directly with G-d.

Sinai isn’t provable but demands a leap of faith, based upon the truths delivered to us throughout the generations. However, once we accept the “truth” of Sinai, we possess absolute “certainty” and direct access to the will of G-d. Mass revelation at Sinai is what distinguishes Judaism

from other religions.

A few weeks ago, I was visited by someone struggling with their religious belief.

Part of his struggle stemmed from his uncertainty about Sinai and his incredulity that that Hashem actually spoke with us. It was too difficult for him to imagine.

Why is it becoming difficult for our generation to imagine Hashem speaking with an entire nation and delivering immutable truths to them?

First of all, to believe that G-d speaks to us, we must first believe in the glory of Man. Lower beings do not receive the direct word of G-d. Sadly, a four-hundred year long process of devaluation has converted Man from a masterpiece into a monster.

Traditionally, Man was viewed as the pinnacle of creation, a noble creature crafted in the image of His creator.

Tragically, that is no longer the human image staring back at us from the abyss.

The decline of the dignity of Man began in the 17th century when Copernicus revealed that our world was no longer the “center” of reality. Subsequently, the discovery of fossils suggested that human “history” was just a small blip within a larger timeline spanning millions of years.

Copernicus shattered our sense of “space” and fossils obliterated our sense of time.

Darwin further devalued Man by illustrating that we are just one small spoke of a larger evolutionary wheel being spun by forces beyond human free will.

As the 19th century English poet Tennyson observed, we are lost a world of “one hundred million years and one hundred million spheres”.

In this cultural whirlwind it is almost impossible to believe in the supremacy of Man and in his distinctive dignity. Instead of a being, brushed by G-d’s splendor, we are reduced into a small infinitesimal collection of genes floating in space and lost in time. As Nietzsche lamented “Gone, alas, is his faith in his dignity, uniqueness, irreplaceableness… he has become animal … rolling faster and faster away from the center into nothingness, into piercing sensation of his nothingness.” Is this “animal of nothingness” a creature G-d would actually speak with?

Jews reject many of the direct conclusions of these philosophies about the history of the Earth or the origin of Man. Yet we still live in a broader culture which does embrace these “truths” and the loss of human dignity is suffered by us all. The world is becoming larger, and we are becoming smaller. Human dignity has been eroded by mass media, market capitalism and misplaced trust in corrupt leaders.

We are far less noble and self-respecting than our ancestors.

Faith comes in different levels of intensity. Even though we continue to believe that Hashem spoke with us, how deeply do we identify with that “moment”.

How ready are we to submit to its binding truths rather than being swayed by modern convention? Additionally, how deeply do we imagine that Hashem continues to speak with us and continues to lodge personal expectations and demands. For many, the Sinai moment hasn’t vanished but has withered.

For other Jews, Sinai isn’t just faded, it has become abrasive. For some, the specter of Hashem choosing one nation at Sinai rankles their sense of justice and of equality. After all, we all share 99% of the same genetic makeup. Why would Hashem speak with us and not with every other human being created in his image?

Regrettably, the modern world has distorted the terms of our “chosenness”.

We weren’t chosen at Sinai for privilege or luxury, but for mission. After 2000 years of theological confusion and moral chaos, Hashem selected us as role models for humanity. Humanity had repeatedly proven incapable of grasping the concept of a “One” G-d nor were they disciplined enough to preserve moral integrity.

Hashem selected us to illustrate the dignity of a life of commandments and of restraint. We are meant to model “613” so that humanity is drawn to “7” (Noachide laws). Sinai was the moment we were missioned to history.

Unfortunately, the modern world

has erased the words mission, duty or responsibility and replaced them with the terms “rights”, “claims” and “entitlements”.

Our market-driven society has become very transactional: which rights does our government owe us and how much will it cost us to attain those rights.

Ideally, humans should live for obligation and responsibility. Protecting human rights is valuable as a precondition to provide humans the resources – both material and emotional- to perform their responsibilities and their missions without inhibition.

In a culture of duty, selection of a chosen people isn’t racist. In a culture of “rights” it feels unjust. Buried in a culture of “rights” some view Sinai as discriminatory and less morally authoritative. They may believe that it occurred, but its truths fell less relevant and less seminal.

On Shavuot, at Sinai, G-d spoke to the only creature worthy of divine revelation. Realizing that humanity had lost its course, Hashem chose one nation to speak to, with the hope that we would relay His message to an unbelieving world. Sinai is the source of Judaism and the more deeply we identify with that “moment” the deeper our faith runs.

Free From Oreo Cheese Cake

This is an incredibly impressive ‘cheese cake’ without compromising on flavour and appearance. Oreo biscuits come all flavours and sizes. Do check if you want your cake to be ‘free from’ that you pick up the right packet.

Also soaking the cashew nuts in water is not essential; it just makes for a smoother consistency.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes plus 4 hours chilling Cooking Time: 1 hour Serves: 8-10 Ingredients Base 25 Oreo cookies or 150g Oreo cookie crumbs 2 tablespoons coconut oil Filling 75g raw cashews – soak in water for 4 hours or over night -then drain 1 tin 400g coconut milk (I used full fat coconut milk) 450g non-dairy cream cheese 1 400g container silken tofu 180g caster sugar or coconut sugar 3 tablespoons cornflour 110g non-dairy butter/ margarine 1 tablespoon vanilla essence 35g plain flour 10-12 Oreos roughly chopped for the filling 10-12 Oreos roughly chopped for the topping Method For the base 1. P lace the whole Oreo biscuits into a food processor and pulse until they reach a coarse crumbly texture. Add the coconut oil and pulse for another second or two to combine.

2. Line and grease with a little vegetable oil a 22cm loose based cake tin using baking parchment paper.

3. Press the biscuit crumb base into the prepared cake tin. Distribute evenly across the base and up the sides. Set aside.

For the Filling 1. Place the raw cashews and the coconut milk in a food processor. Pulse the food processor for several seconds to break down the cashews until smooth and creamy.

2. Add the vegan cream cheese and tofu and pulse again until smooth and even more creamy.

3. Next add the sugar, cornflour, margarine, and vanilla. Pulse for several seconds, up to a minute until you have a nice smooth mixture.

4. Add the flour and stir to combine.

5. Add the 10-12 roughly chopped Oreos and give it one more stir to combine. Set aside.

6. Preheat the oven to 160C. 7. Pour the cheesecake filling into the prepared base and spread the 10-12 roughly chopped Oreos over the top.

8. Bake for 60 minutes and then turn the oven off and leave the cheesecake in the oven for another hour.

9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before placing in the fridge. I recommend letting the cheesecake chill for at least four hours (or even a full day before) slicing and serving.

Carrot Cheese Cake Squares This is two cakes swirled into one: carrot cake with marbled layers of cheese cake. Two of my favourite cakes recipe all in one. Easy to serve and divide up as it is made in a flat cake tin and cut into squares.

Preparation Time: 25 minutes Cooking Time: 45 minutes Makes: 16 Squares

Ingredients Carrot Cake 170g salted butter 60g brown sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 200g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon mixed spice 150g grated carrot Cheese Cake 450g cream cheese, at room temperature 60g caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon 75g plain flour 1 large egg, at room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Vanilla Icing 50g salted butter, melted 150g icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Garnish: Finely chopped pistachio nuts and edible rose petals

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170C. Line a 22cm square baking tin with parchment paper.

2. To make the carrot cake. In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla until combined. Add the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate soda, salt, mixed spice and cinnamon, whisking until just combined. Stir in the grated carrots.

3. To make the cheesecake. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, sugar lemon zest, and flour until combined, about 3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla and whisk once more until the mixture is smooth.

4. Assemble. Working with the carrot cake mixture, spread about 2/3rds of the batter into the prepared tin in an even layer. Now pour over 2/3rds of the cheesecake mixture, then dollop spoonfuls of the

remaining carrot cake mixture into the cheesecake layer. Lastly, pour over the remaining cheesecake mixture.

5. Bake for 45-55 minutes, cover the cake with foil halfway through cooking to prevent the top from browning. Allow the cake to cool in the cake tin, then transfer to the fridge to chill completely, at least 3 hours.

6. To make the icing, whisk the butter, icing sugar, vanilla, and 3 tablespoons water, until smooth. If needed, thin with additional water. Drizzle the icing over the squares. Leave to set for about an hour before cutting into squares.

7. The squares can keep chilled in the fridge for up to 5 days.

8. Garnish with finely chopped pistachio nuts and edible rose petals.

Bemidbar Bemidbar Word Seach Welcome back, we’re up to a new sefer, a new book. This one is called Bamidbar. A) Because the first parsha is Bamidbar B) It’s all about, bamidbar, what happened in the desert.

Most of Vayikra is Hashem telling Moshe stuff, our story hasn’t moved on. Now we’re ready to leave Mount Sinai and rock and roll to Israel!!

First, we get counted, a lot of people died after the whole golden calf, eigel, thing. Plus, you have a card collection or money? Ever count them? Go through them? Why? Because you love them so much! That’s what G-d does with us, He really, really loves us and He shows it with all the counting.

Levi don’t get counted with everyone else, they’re different.

Now, we get given flags. The flags are made of silk and match the color of the gem stone that represents that tribe on the Kohain Gadol's Chosen -breastplate. Reuven - He's got a red flag. His symbol is a mandrake, a kind of plant that grows in the wild. Reuven chose these flowers for his mother because he wanted to make sure they did not anyone elses property. His tribe was very careful not to steal. The flag of Shimon is green with an embroidery of a city, representing Shechem which was the first city we ever conquered. Levi -The flag of Levi is white, black and red. White because it’s pure, black because they don’t have a lot of stuff and nonsense, and red for the blood of the korbonot. Upon it is embroidered the Chosenbreastplate

that the Kohain Gadol wears. Yehuda -Yehuda's flag is the color of t'cheilet, the blue dye that was used for tzitzit. On the flag is embroidered a lion, the symbol of royalty. From the line of Yehuda comes King David and all the other kings and Moshiach. Yissachar’s flag is black, again he doesn’t own a lot of things in this world. On it is a sun and moon because the tribe were great astronomers which is very important for lots of things in Judaism. Zevulun is white because he has the best reasons for his business; supporting the tribe of Yissochar so they can learn. On it is a ship because they were sea merchants. Dan has an opal-colored flag and the serpent embroidered on it, both hint to Shimshon, the mighty warrior who later fought off the Philishtim. The flag of Gad is woven from black and white threads. A troop of soldiers is embroidered on the silk cloth. Gad were the soilders of Klal Yisrael. Naftoli’s flag is the colour of diluted wine because they listened to the Sanhedrin and Torah is compared to wine. On it is a deer because Naftoli is known for being swift. Asher's flag is a pearl color silk. Upon it an olive tree is embroidered. Asher's portion in the land of Eretz Yisroel is filled with olive trees.

Then we discuss who travels where and how to take down and set up the Mishkan. The Levim do that, and carry it and Elazar, Ahron’s son is in charge. So off into the sunset we march, where to next? Find out next week!

A Jewish Recipe

adassa and Rivki were sitting in the dining room, patiently making flowers out of tissue paper and pipe cleaners. “Shavuos is my favourite Yom tov,” Hadassa said to Rivki as she put the flower she had just finished into the vase in front of her.

“I just love being milky all the time and getting to eat all that yummy cheesecake.”

“Yum,” replied Rivki, as she passed another pipe cleaner to Hadassa. “And they come in so many tasty different flavours and types.”

“Let’s ask Ima if we can make the cheesecake for Yom Tov, then we can add any toppings we like,” suggested Hadassa.

They quickly finished off the last of the paper flowers and went into the kitchen.

“Ima, we want to make the cheesecake for Yom Tov,” said Rivki.

Ima thought for a moment.

“Ok,” she said. “But you must tidy up after. Here is the recipe, please make sure to follow it carefully.”

Hadassa grabbed the paper and started reading out the ingredients to Rivki, who ran to get them from the cupboards and fridge.

Hadassa took out the weighing scales, mixing bowl, cake tin and spoons.

When they finally had everything ready on the kitchen table, they excitedly got to work. They weighed and measured, poured and mixed, until finally everything was in the cake tin, ready to go in the oven.

They called Ima to put the cheesecake in the oven and while it was baking they started to get their toppings ready.

Hadassa pulled out chocolate sauce and frozen strawberries, while Rivki pulled out meringues and frozen blueberries. This was going to be the best cheesecake ever!

Finally after what seemed like ages, the oven timer went off.

Ima came to turn off the oven and take out the cake.

“Oh dear,” she said as she opened the oven door. Hadassa and Rivki peered around her to try and see. Ima carefully

“Oh no!” cried Rivki as she got a better look at the cheesecake. “Why does it have a ginormous crack in it?!”

“It definitely doesn’t look like Ima’s cheesecake does normally,” replied Hadassa.

“There are a few reasons why this can happen,” said Ima. “It can be caused by cooking it for too long, but we put on a timer so it can’t be that. Is it possible you added too many eggs?”

Hadassa looked at the table and counted the egg shells. She then looked carefully at the recipe.

“Oh no! We must have put in three eggs instead of two!”

“Are we going to have to throw it away?”

Rivki asked Ima sadly.

“No, I think we can salvage it. It will still taste yummy, but maybe we can do something to make it look really good as well.”

“We could use the frozen fruit and meringues to cover the crack,” suggested Hadassa.

“That’s a great idea,” replied Ima. So Hadassa and Rivki set to work, making a design using the meringues and strawberries to make a beautiful flower on the raised, cracked centre. Then they used the blueberries and chocolate sauce to make a beautiful pattern towards the edges of the cake.

“Wow,” said Ima when they had finished decorating the cheesecake. “That’s amazing, not only did you cover the crack up, but you actually used it to help your design and make the cake look even better! Well done!”

Hadassa smiled, “I was thinking that it is a little mashal of the Torah as our recipe for life and that if we make a mistake and don’t follow it, then sometimes things might not go well, but Hashem gives us a chance to correct it and to become even better from our mistakes.”

“What a lovely thought,” said Ima smiling. “Please bring it to the Yom Tov meal, along with the cheesecake!”

Is social media good or bad for business?

This isn’t a simple or easy question to answer, it’s a tough nut to crack. But I’ll give it a shot, so let’s break that question down.

By ‘good or bad’, what is ‘good’ and what is ‘bad’? And who is the question talkin to, individuals or businesses?

Starting with individuals, to answer the question in order - it depends. It depends on so much. It depends on if your social group is on it. It depends on what you would use it for. It depends if you can trust yourself to use it well and not spend too much time on it. And the questions go on and on.

Here’s an example: LinkedIn. LinkedIn is powerful. On LinkedIn, you can learn from other people in your business industry, spread your name so that people locally and internationally know about who you are and what you do and connect with people that matter.

It seems positive, right? But if LinkedIn is used in the wrong way, all those positives can become negative.

But in the end, it’s up to you to decide. Decide if it’s right for you and if it is, what’s the right way for you to use it.

Moving on to businesses using social media. It’s good for business, really good, if social media is used right. If social media is used right, a business can reach more of the right people to talk about what they sell. This gives businesses a real chance to compete with the big businesses that have massive advertising budgets.
