Moriah Jewish Day School, Sacks Morasha Jewish Primary School and Wolfson Hillel Primary School will form the first Jewish community Multi Academy Trust (MAT) later this year.

The Government approved MAT enables a group of schools to combine learning resources and teaching expertise whilst retaining their individual identity.

Moriah in Pinner, and Sacks Morasha, in Finchley, both have over 200 pupils and Wolfson Hillel has over 450 pupils.

The development of the network has been facilitated and supported by the United Synagogue Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the US will select trustees.

Board launches Jewish manifesto in Leeds

Board of Deputies chief executive Gillian Merron launched the Jewish Manifesto for Local Government in Leeds on Sunday.

Collated by the Board after consultation with more than 250 community organisations, the publication made its bow at the Jewish Community in Yorkshire Seminar.

The Jewish Leadership Council and Leeds Jewish Representative Council jointly hosted the event.

“It is critical for the Jewish community to make its voice heard in local authorities, particularly on crucial issues such as coroners’ services and anti-Semitism,” said Ms Merron.

“This manifesto will ensure

councillors and candidates know about the issues that matter to their Jewish residents. “ She added: “Ahead of this year’s elections around the country we will be urging candidates to endorse our 10 Local Commitments, which summarise the community’s priorities.”

The manifesto is a definitive document for councillors and candidates serving Jewish residents across wards or boroughs.

The publication will be sent to candidates across the country ahead of local elections on May 3.

This vote includes boroughs with some of the largest Jewish communities in the country, including councils in London, Greater Manchester and Leeds.

Policies outlined in the document covers a raft of issues including a call on all local councils to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Association definition of anti-Semitism.

Councils will also be called upon to appoint coroners sensitive to the needs of Jewish communities and including support for Jewish schools, welfare services and housing provision.

Councillors will further be asked to endorse the Manifesto’s TenLocalCommitments outlining all of the community’s policy priorities.

Viennese conference calls for Spanish Government solutions to end anti-Semitism to fight anti-Semitism

Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress, called for practical solutions to fight anti-Semitism at a groundbreaking conference at the University of Vienna.

An unprecedented 150 speakers from United States, Israel, Latin America, Australia and European countries participated in the fiveday ‘An End to Anti-Semitism’ symposium.

“We have to plant the seeds that will end anti-Semitism,” Dr Kantor said in his opening address.

“This must be the beginning of the end of anti-Semitism. Talking about anti-Semitism is not enough.

We must be ambitious and pragmatic in order to find enduring solutions to this problem.”

He added: “People marching in the streets of European capitals shouting ‘Death to the Jews’ has led to the actual death of Jews and will continue if Europe does not react.

“That police and military protection for Jewish communities is necessary is in itself a shameful indictment on European society.

“We have an obligation not to give anti-Semitism any space in the public sphere with radical forces on the Left and Right gaining strength.”

Referring to the Freedom Party now in the Austrian government,” he noted: “For the Freedom Party to be

acceptable to those of us who look for a more open and tolerant Europe, they must get rid of all elements of its darker past and take practical steps.

“These must include the immediate rejection of anyone with an anti-Semitic past who has made insulting comments publicly or virtually.”

He added: “We have taken note of the recent announcement of the setting up a panel of researchers to investigate its history. However, this cannot just be a tool of distraction or find evidence against a few already departed members.

“The panel must lead to practical recommendations that are enacted.”

Conference brought together academics, religious dignitaries, political leaders and decision-makers.

Headline speakers included Raya Kalenova, EJC chief executive, Natan Sharansky, Jewish Agency chairman and Dina Porat, Yad Vashem chief historian.

Following conference, experts will develop short, mid-term and long-term strategies to combat anti-Semitism for future generations.

Ms. Kalenova said communities faced attacks on fundamental freedoms to anti-Semitism from the Far Right, the Far left and radical Islam.

She also emphasised a need for a thorough follow-up after the adoption of the Resolution on Antisemitism by the European Parliament last year.

Her leadership talk also focused on those who publically criticise Israel.

“There is an urgent need to educate against the notion that Jews are “fair target” for violence and harassment in the name of so-called “political criticism” of Israel, the only Jewish state.

“Our approach here is to oppose the normalisation of narratives that threatens our communities and to ensure that they are not given space in political discourse.”

European Jewish Congress President Dr. Moshe Kantor has welcomed a landmark initiative to end anti-Semitism in Spain.

The proposal was conducted between the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), the country’s EJC affiliate, and the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

“Anti-Semitism is a learned prejudice,” he said (eurojewrcong.org).

“People and societies are not born with it. So it is vital that governments actively engage in educating towards eradicating it as a societal ill.”

He added: “In order to understand anti-Semitism, this work has to be done in cooperation with the Jewish communities who know it and experience it directly.”

“According to the Talmud, teachers are the builders of peace”.

“We are devoted to fostering European values, the Spanish constitution and the urgent need of eradicating anti-Semitism.”

Dr Kantor urged European governments to see the program as a “positive prototype” to apply in their own countries.

Teachers across all levels in Spain will be better prepared to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance in the classroom.

They will also me able to promote Holocaust education and the heritage of Spanish Jews, Israel and the Middle East conflict.

The initiative followed a longstanding commitment by the Spanish government to fight anti-Semitism in society as a whole.

Thousands mourn the loss of Reb Shmuel Auerbach ZT”L

BY JAMES MARLOW Tens of thousands of mourners left their Yeshivot, Kollelim and places of work for the funeral of Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, 87, who died suddenly in the early hours of Shabbat morning at his home in the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sha’arei Chesed.

In an unusual move for the custom of Jerusalem, the funeral was postponed from Saturday night to Sunday, so more mourners could be bused in from across the country and give honour to Reb Shmuel who was buried at Har Menuchot cemetery in the capital.

As the funeral procession left Sha’arei Chesed via Diskin Street and then Sderot Ben Zvi towards the entrance of the city, hundreds along the route were standing on rooftops, balconies and hanging out of open windows watching in silence as thousands walked behind the vehicle carrying the body.

Reb Shmuel was Rosh Yeshiva of Ma’alot HaTorah in Sha’arei Chesed and recognised throughout the world as a knowledgeable Torah scholar. He was the son of Reb Shlomo Zalman Auerbach who was truly one of the greatest revered Halachic authorities of the twentieth century. But despite being one of the leaders of the Orthodox non-Chassidic (Lithuanian) Haredi world, Reb Shlomo Zalman was always known as a moderate who never endorsed any political movement and stayed away from all politics.

When he was niftar (died) in 1995, his son Reb Shmuel began to take an active political role and on certain issues opposed the mainstream Charedi leadership.

The established Lithuanian Charedi political party is Degel HaTorah, but Reb Shmuel came out

in support for a new party representing the Lithuanian community when the Torah sage of the generation at that time, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Shach, was in severe physical decline.

Nevertheless, in 2002, Reb Shmuel became a member of the Council of Torah Sages of the Degel HaTorah movement for more than a decade. But in 2012 he and others rebelled against the mainstream rabbinical leadership after the death of then-leader Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and some say, sought to take the mantle of leadership for himself.

In the end he lost the battle to the more senior Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, who was widely perceived as being the “leader of the generation” of the Haredi community.

But Reb Shmuel with his close aides continued to fight an insurgency against the mainstream Lithuanian community and the rebellion caused a serious dent costing the Charedi political party, United Torah Judaism (Agudah Yisrael and Degal HaTorah) at least one, probably two seats in the 2013 general election.

With Rabbi Shteinman’s passing last year, the leadership of the mainstream Lithuanian Haredi community was thrown into even more doubt, as Reb Shmuel and one of his two closest assistants, Nati Grossman, established a new political movement called Peleg Yerushalmi (Jerusalem Faction) group. It is believed to hold the support of between 10 to 15 percent of the Lithuanian community.

Grossman set up the Hapeles newspaper as a mouthpiece for the new movement which quickly began to attack the mainstream leadership. A new political party, Bnei Torah, was established which

captured a small number of seats on municipal councils in Jerusalem, Modiin Illit and Bnei Brak during the 2013 local elections.

The split in the community developed deep roots especially on matters of educational institutions and the two factions increasingly were segregated from each other.

The Jerusalem Faction were also well known for their vitriolic opposition to Charedi enlistment into the IDF. Whereas mainstream community members reported to IDF offices with their military service exceptions, Reb Shmuel endorsed a policy of yeshiva students associated with his group to refuse to even cooperate with the IDF in order to obtain their military service exemption. This ruling rendered many deserters and law breakers and were liable to arrest by the military police. This in turn led to Jerusalem Faction supporters inciting and rioting in their neighbourhoods.

Reb Shmuel insisted that the only purpose of drafting Charedi men was to make them non-religious and therefore refused to accept the policy under any circumstances.

The Rabbi and his advisors would frequently send out large numbers of yeshiva students studying in institutions associated with the Jerusalem Faction onto the streets of Jerusalem and Bnei Brak. They blocked intersections and major highways in protest and demonstrated against the arrest of yeshiva students who failed to report for IDF duty when called.

In recent months, these demonstrations have increased in frequency as more yeshiva students associated with the Jerusalem Faction turned 18 and were arrested which fed a cycle of extremist civil disobedience.

It should be pointed out that leading Charedi rabbis of the past and

the mainstream leaders of today, have refused to adopt such unprecedented violation of the law.

Now that Reb Shmuel has passed on to HaOlam HaEmet (next world), it remains to be seen whether the Jerusalem Faction has been weakened and its influence is significantly damaged or whether the movement will regain its strength.

Some have said that since he was the lone true and great rabbinical leader and scholar calling for the demonstrations, the Jerusalem Faction’s ability to bring out large numbers of protestors in future will be severely weakened.

On the other hand, close colleagues and associates gave eulogies last Sunday during the funeral ceremony in Sha’arei Chesed with strong predictions. Some including Rabbi Tzvi Friedman of Bnei Brak, who is a supporter of the Jerusalem Faction, spoke of continued uncompromising opposition to Haredi military service and said the campaign is not lost.

Others were much more moderate in their tone like one of Reb Shmuel’s many brothers, Rabbi Azriel Auerbach, from Bayit Vegan. He and some of his colleagues spoke of Reb Shmuel’s abilities and influence on thousands of Yeshiva boys. Although Rabbi Azriel Auerbach has become increasingly involved in the Jerusalem Faction in the last 2 years.

But the Hapeles newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Jerusalem Faction, hastened to publish a mourning notice from 12 prominent rabbis associated with the movement who pledged to uphold Reb Shmuel’s uncompromising positions on matters affecting the Haredi community. It was suggested that this group of rabbis could eventually constitute a council of Torah sages for the Jerusalem Faction and its Bnei Torah political party would become a replacement for Reb Shmuel Auerbach’s leadership.

Among the 12 rabbis mentioned were Rabbi Tzvi Friedman who gave one of the eulogies, Rabbi Shmuel Markowitz of Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak and Rabbi Asher HaCohen Deutsch, a respected figure also from Bnei Brak.

But none of these Rabbis are considered to be rabbinic heavy weights and this lack of a “Torah Giant” status amongst the leadership ranks of the Jerusalem Faction is likely to be a significant problem for the legitimacy and authority of the movement.

According to Yisroel Cohen, a senior reporter for the Kikar HaShabbat Haredi news website, the Jerusalem Faction leadership was totally unprepared for Shmuel Auerbach’s death and no one figure has been groomed to inherit the movement’s mantle of leadership.

However, there are said to be internal divisions within the faction regarding the correct approach to matters such as military service, among others, and that the group faces significant challenges in the coming months to preserve its unity and its influence.

Cohen said it would be hard to imagine large numbers of the Jerusalem Faction returning to the mainstream Charedi community, given the deep divisions within the sector over the political issues which involve yeshivas and synagogues which have become split between the two camps.

The leadership could also become more geographically oriented, with Rabbi Deutsch holding sway in Bnei Brak and Rabbi Azriel Auerbach gaining primacy in Jerusalem, said Cohen.

Regardless of who emerges as leader, or leaders of the Jerusalem Faction, or if the movement and the Bnei Torah recede from prominence and lose their political standing, it appears certain the values and positions espoused by Shmuel Auerbach will endure.

US Jerusalem embassy opens Terror plotters arrested

BY JAMES MARLOW President Donald Trump and his administration will keep their promise and officially relocate their Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem when Israel celebrates its 70th anniversary.

A US official confirmed the new US Embassy to Israel will open in Jerusalem in May, adding that, “the Embassy will initially be located in Arnona, on a compound that currently houses the consular operations of Consulate General Jerusalem.” But the State Department will continue to search out an appropriate site including the relevant needed architects for the construction of a much larger, more permanent base.

It is understood the new temporary US Embassy will house Ambassador David Friedman along with a small team which has been welcomed by Prime Minister Netanyahu and most Knesset Members.

In an 80-minute speech last Friday President Trump defended his move to a conservative action group in Washington.

“I said, I have to do it, because it’s the right thing to do,” Trump said. “The campaign against it was so incredible,” referring to his discussions with some world leaders.

“But you know what?” said Trump, “the campaign for it was also incredible.”

Heather Nauert, a spokesman for the State Department, elaborated on the administration’s plans in a statement last Friday afternoon and noted that US diplomats are “excited about taking this historic step, and look forward with anticipation

to the May opening.”

She also pointed out that the consular operations, including American citizen and visa services, will continue at the Arnona facility without interruption, as part of the Embassy.

In addition, “Consulate General Jerusalem will continue to operate as an independent mission with an unchanged mandate, from its historic Agron Road location,” which is next door the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The event was hosted by the Israeli company OurCrowd, who introduce innovators and start-ups to a wide range of entrepreneurs and investors and the fourth annual Global Equity Summit was their most successful so far.

OurCrowd has now raised more than $650 million for 145 start-ups since it was founded in 2013 and that figure is expected to top $1 billion later this year.

One electric vehicle to look out for in the next two years is the driverless ice cream van with a robot in the back serving your children their favourite chocolate or vanilla flavour.

The company behind this invention is Honda and its 3E robotics concept with artificial intelligence

(AI), engineered to advance mobility and improve people’s lives. Honda believes that AI can assist people in many different situations such as disaster recovery, recreation and learning from humans to become more helpful and empathetic.

Robots with their artificial intelligence are also willing to sell them ice cream in the park but what is fascinating about Honda’s companion robotics concept is that the robots will show compassion to humans with a variety of expressions and this writer was given a demonstration of that.

Honda say that when it comes to autonomous vehicles, they will even personalise the driving style of the owner and bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and human preferences.

In North America, Honda has more than 450,000 vehicles on the roads equipped with the Honda SensingTM and AcuraWatchTM safety along with driver-assistive technologies, so this next stage is just another level.

At the Jerusalem Summit earlier this month, Honda’s Chief Operating Officer, Tsutomu Wakitani,

Three Israeli Arabs planning a terror attack at the Temple Mount have been arrested by Shin Bet agents in collaboration with Israel Police reported Yeshiva World News.

The suspects, Muhmad Masoud Muhmad Jubarin and Amar Lutfri Muhmad Jubarin, both 20, and a minor, are in custody.

Charges were handed down on Monday.

Intelligence since January noted an attack would resemble a terror incident when two Israeli policemen died al-Aqsa Mosque in July 2017.

planned to attack a shul and police.

The attack which cost the lives of Kamil Shanan and Hayil Sethawi began near Lion’s Gate then changed to Har Habayis.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat in a statement at the time pledged that the perpetrators would be sought and brought to justice.

“This was a particularly serious attack, intended to create chaos and inflame the situation on Har Habayis,” he said.

“Anyone who thinks they will seek their goal with terrorism against holy sites is sorely incorrect. The opposite is true. We will chase them down and exact a price from anyone involved in murderous terror.”

The cost of electric vehicles has been reduced by 65% since 2010 because manufacturers are making materials, processes and the battery more affordable. The greater demand for the electric vehicle (EV) has also helped to bring down overall production costs.

Now there is a device where if the driver turns their eyes away from the road, the device will beep. It is produced by the Israeli technology company Mobileye and acts as a sensor or a driver’s third eye, constantly monitoring the driving environment. In addition, it provides the driver with the usual audible alerts such as a pedestrian or cyclist warning, a lane departure or a forward warning collision.

Next year we will see the introduction of hands free vehicles where the driver can disengage from the wheel for short periods of time. In 2021 Robo-Taxi is expected to be operational in some countries, although it will initially operate with a human. But many say the technology will eventually put employment at risk as human

The Bibi Files – Part two of three

BY JAMES MARLOW The police have so far recommended two indictments of corruption against Prime Minister Netanyahu and two are on hold. Last week, we looked at the evidence of Case 1000 which relates to the acceptance of gifts, mostly cigars, champagne and jewellery from Israeli businessman Arnon Milchen.

The second possible charge is known as Case 2000 and involves collusion with Arnon Mozes who is the publisher and controlling owner of the daily newspaper, Yediot Ahronot. Mozes asked for the meeting in 2014 in which he allegedly promised Netanyahu that his paper would give him more favourable coverage if he worked to shut down the pro-Netanyahu and popular free

Yisrael HaYom newspaper, which was affecting Yediot sales.

The police discovered a recorded conversation on the mobile phone of Netanyahu’s former chief of staff, Ari Harow (who is the subject of a separate and unrelated probe).

Police say the conversation is proof that Mozes offered Netanyahu a bribe and that Netanyahu accepted the offer. But the premier insists he recorded the conversation on the advice of his attorney because he was afraid that Mozes would try to extort him. Still no deal was struck.

Yediot Ahronot is perhaps the most influential newspaper in Israel and its front page dictates the daily news programming for radio and television broadcasts. But Yediot’s coverage of Netanyahu is implacably hostile to the premier and his family. To a lesser but significant degree, Yediot Ahronot is also deeply hostile to the Israeli political right.

According to the conversation, which was leaked to the media by the police more than a year ago, Netanyahu and Mozes discussed an elaborate scheme to change the newspaper business in Yediot‘s

favour.

Israel’s largest circulation paper is the free tabloid Yisrael Hayom owned and funded by American billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

In their recorded conversation, Mozes raised the possibility of Netanyahu curtailing government advertising in Yisrael Hayom and working to cut back its circulation in order to increase Yediot Ahronot‘s market share. In exchange, Mozes offered to scale back the negative tone of his paper’s coverage of Netanyahu. Nothing came of the conversation.

In late 2014, against Netanyahu’s expressed wishes, then-Justice Minister Tzipi Livni put forward a controversial media bill, which was based on a legal opinion written by Yediot Ahronot‘s legal advisor. The bill, which was dubbed the “Yisrael Hayom law,” would have forced the shutdown of the paper because its owners were not charging money for it.

The law passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset with 43 votes but Netanyahu and his Likud Party rightly voted against the bill.

Moreover, to prevent the bill from

going forward, Netanyahu disbanded his government and the Knesset and called new elections less than 18 months into his term.

Questions were asked why the police refused to investigate any of the 43 lawmakers who voted in favour of the bill, or why the Yediot Ahronot newspaper supported the move.

Last month, the bill’s sponsor, Labor Party Knesset Member, Eitan Cabel, who enjoyed favourable coverage in the paper was brought in for a brief interview.

But the police are recommending that Netanyahu be indicted for a conversation that went nowhere, which he recorded. Although Cabel was given a brief interrogation by police, none of the other 42 MK’s that supported the bill were questioned.

Case 3000 related to Israel’s purchase of submarines from Germany and since Netanyahu’s associates are under investigation, his name was dragged into the affair. But the police have so far decided NOT to recommend an indictment here.

Case 4000 looks into the relationship between Netanyahu and

the telecommunications company Bezeq. Its controlling shareholder Shaul Elovitch who also owns the Walla news website has in the past given favourable coverage to Netanyahu and that to the police is “suspicious.”

It is important to add that Elovitch is suspected of giving bribes in return for Communication Ministry benefits and Bezeq CEO Stella Handler was arrested this week. So, the police will question the Prime Minister at his home on Friday which is Purim in Jerusalem and is the time events are turned upside-down.

However, Channel 10 News this week leaked a WhatsApp chat between the judge in the Bezek corruption probe and an investigator for the prosecution. The chat involved coordinating the remand period for suspects in the case which of course looks really bad for the judge.

Next week we will sum up the evidence against Netanyahu which so far is all smoke and absolutely no fire and look back on the campaign against him since he first entered office in 1996.

Earlier this week 10 children from Brondesbury Park Cheder held their weekly cheder class at Jewish Care’s Clore Manor home in Hendon so that, after their lesson, they could give hamantaschan and sing to the residents, wishing them a Purim Sameach.

Devorie Nyman, Brondesbury Park Cheder said, “Purim is all about giving to others and the children will remember the good feeling their visit brought everyone.

They will understand the importance of giving time to others by volunteering.

Sharon Arad, Clore Manor social coordinator added, “Our residents enjoyed seeing the children very much, they really bring the festivals to life and bring fun to the home. Everyone benefits from these intergenerational visits and at Jewish Care

we welcome visits from volunteers of all ages all year round to help us to bring the Jewish values into our homes and community centres.”

Over Purim, schools and synagogue groups including Hampstead Garden Suburb youth and Hasmonean School will be visiting Jewish Care homes to celebrate with residents. Three schools, Kerem, Moriah and Rosh Pinah Primary School will be taking part in Zumbathons on Purim, to have fun and raise funds for Jewish Care. The Jewish Care B’nei Mitzvah programme will be volunteering at Reuben’s House and making hamantashan with the residents and members of Jewish Care’s community centres will be baking hamantaschan and attending Purim parties.

Tea for honours recipients at Kerem claim chess Holocaust Survivors Centre tournament hat-trick Recipients of New Year’s Honours for their services to Holocaust education and awareness were congratulated yesterday at a tea at Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors’ Centre in Hendon. Together with their relatives, members, volunteers and staff at the Centre, those honoured who could attend, were joined by Matthew Offord MP for Hendon.

Membership of the Order of the British Empire were awarded to Reverend Bernd Koschland MBE, Hannah Lewis MBE, Andrew Kaufman MBE, Joan Salter MBE and Martin Stern MBE. Medalists of the Order of the British Empire, BEM’s were given to Harry Bibring, Leslie Kleinman, Dr Chaim (Harry) Olmer, Josef Perl, Harry Spiro, Janine Webber, Freda Wineman.

Leslie Kleinman BEM, was 14 when he and his family were deported from the ghetto to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, on the second death march to Dachau he was later liberated by American soldiers. He discovered he was the only member of his family who survived.

At the tea, Leslie said, “I’m very emotional about receiving the honours. The Germans gave me a number 8230 on my arm and Rabbis have told me that if you add up the number it has the same value as the word for ‘love’ in Hebrew. I want young people to understand it’s important not to hate, that’s my message for young people when I talk to them.”

Freda Wineman BEM, member of the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre, said, “I am honoured and it’s good for the work over many years in Holocaust education to be

recognised. But now it’s important that we continue to try to do this as there aren’t so many survivors left now. We should never forget, we should remember that 6 million innocent Jewish people perished in the Holocaust.”

Matthew Offord, MP, said, “When I come to speak to members at the Centre and hear their experiences it brings to life the scale of what happened during the Shoah. It helps us to remember with sadness the numbers who were killed and also to celebrate those who survived and who we honour now as they continue to tell their stories so that we can learn from the past.”

Reverend Bernrd Koschland MBE, who was born near Nuremberg, Germany came over on Kindertransport in 1939 and his older sister followed him to the UK a few months later. He went on to become a teacher at JFS and City of London School for Girls until 1995.

After the tea, he said, “I feel honoured, it was not expected at all and it seems I have achieved something over the last few years, speaking widely about the Holocaust and in particular Kindertransport on which I came. I feel it’s important to talk to young people and their teachers too about the Holocaust so they can understand what happened.”

Janine Webber BEM, who survived the ghetto, went into hiding and took on false identities to survive in occupied Poland whilst the majority of her family were killed during the Holocaust. Janine said, “I feel honoured and I’m happy that Holocaust education is recognised as something that’s important.

“If I didn’t tell my story, nobody

would know what happened in Lvov as there are very few survivors from where I come from. My message is it’s important to be tolerant, not to persecute those who are different and to remember what happened in the Holocaust.”

Andrew Kaufman MBE, chair of the Association of Jewish Refugees, who studied law at Oxford, has dedicated himself tirelessly to the work of the AJR, also attended the tea as did Hannah Lewis MBE, who survived a labour camp in Poland and arrived in Britain in 1949. Hannah has given talks at schools and universities for many years.

Holocaust Survivor Centre Manager, Aviva Trup, said, “I’d like to congratulate our members who have received New Year’s Honours from The Queen. These honours recognise the commitment shown by each of the survivors who have dedicated themselves to giving their testimonies time and time again to ensure that the next generation hears what happened in the Holocaust so they can learn from it to ensure that it will never be forgotten or happen again. The Holocaust Survivors’ Centre is a place where all of our members can feel secure and welcome by others who understand what they have experienced.”

Prior to the tea, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Olivia Marks-Woldman, spoke about Holocaust Memorial Day, answering questions from Centre members and thanking them for the major contribution they make in remembering the Holocaust and the atrocities that took place.

Kerem School claimed top spot in the third Maccabi GB Inter-School chess tournament at Immanuel College on Sunday.

The event attracted 150 players from 18 schools.

Volunteer Spotlight Tell us about yourself We used to live in Reading, in a small but warm and close knit community where volunteering was part of life and the whole edifice was propped up by a small team of good and worthy workers.

I am a novelist and lecturer so it was possible for me to be available to do whatever needed doing – whether it was for festivals, or education or just diving in and helping with whatever cropped up.

How and why did you get into volunteering?

When we moved to London, after we’d settled down, I was very anxious to get back to volunteering in any way I could.

As I am still working, I am not available on a weekly basis which made it difficult to commit to any regular tasks. Then I found the marvellous JVN who listened to my worries and said the magic words “Ad Hoc!” This is a scheme of theirs to send out volunteers to various charities and institutes which need help maybe for one full day or some other easily fitted in looser need which can be done at a time to suit my packed calendar. Many many people have this same difficulty solved by JVN’s scheme.

What have you done?

I have greeted 1700 people to Westminster for an interfaith event, I have welcomed our young people and cleared up their

crisp packets (not all volunteering is glamorous!) at a big singing event, also at an event in the park in the rain, sung in a choir for disadvantaged young people who had to teach me the words, and done some intermittent work for charity shops.

How has volunteering changed your life and how do you think it affects the people you volunteer for?

VI hope that those I volunteer for find the new faces popping up and disappearing again have brought some novelty and fun to them at the time and that it has eased the strain on the regular staff who work so tirelessly. Also we get to see how unsung some of them are and sing a little to them!

But for me – I’m the one who benefits. It is easy to forget how good it feels to be useful – how good it feels to be allowed to

use your initiative in unfamiliar often tricky situations, smooth the path and see the smiles, hear the pleasure.

Tzohar presents new Kashrut supervision to promote transparency and competition The Tzohar Rabbinical Organization, well-known for revolutionizing halachic marriage in Israel, announced today that they are launching a partner initiative for kashrut supervision.

Tzohar revealed the plans at a press conference in Tel Aviv where they said the kashrut supervision would be defined by fairness and transparency while guided in full accordance with halacha and Torah values.

Rabbi Rafi Feuerstein, Founder of Tzohar stressed that the programme was in no way designed to replace the Rabbinate’s role in kashrut supervision but rather to enhance the process and make it better for both consumers and restaurant owners.

“This program is intended to create competition in a sector where until now there existed a monopoly,” Rabbi Feuerstein said. “The Rabbinate will continue to serve as regulator of kashrut but we need to have competition which will enhance the service and reduce pricing. This will not replace the current

structure, but rather improve it.”

Directing the programme is Rabbi Oren Duvdevani, who has decades of experience working in kashrut supervision both in Israel and the international community. A mobile-based application developed

by Israeli company eyedo will use GPS technology to monitor updates from the supervisors and promote transparency and accuracy in their reporting.

The supervisors in the Tzohar program will be female supervisors who recently underwent a training course in kashrut conducted by Tzohar and Emunah. Irit Gottlieb, who completed the course says she welcomes the chance to contribute.

“As an orthodox woman, I think this allows us to donate our skills and our experience as women to the betterment of kashrut and the community at large,” she said.

In announcing the initiative, Tzohar responded to questions over how Israeli law prohibits any supervising entities other than the Rabbinate from using the word ‘kosher’

in their certifying materials. The Tzohar initiative is therefore officially described as a “Food Supervision” and rather than use the word kosher, the certificate lists how the approved establishment acts in full accordance with the various halachic requirements for a kosher certification.

The Fed holds presentation evening to mark awards On 19 February, the Fed held a presentation evening for staff of Heathlands Village, to mark its most recent Gold Standards Framework (GSF) reaccreditation. The GSF trains frontline care home staff in order to raise the standard of end-of-life care nationally. Homes that are part of the frame work have reduced hospital admissions, allowing people to die in their own beds with holistic support – physical, spiritual and emotional for the person dying and their loved ones.

Heathlands Village has had GSF accreditation, since 2011. The GSF kite-mark is recognised by the Care Quality Commission. The home was awarded the highest level kite-mark for its standard of care – Beacon Status - at its original inspection and further accreditations and is at its most recent reaccreditation was classified as a ‘Platinum’

Jenkins Award for Excellence in Care annually to a staff member who has exhibited an outstanding level of care and support, not only to Heathlands Village residents, but also to their relatives.

In her presentation, Dr Joseph said that Indira’s care and support had meant ‘so much to their entire family whilst Dr Jenkins was cared for at Heathlands Village.’

In summing up the importance of the work carried out at Heathlands Village, Dr Richard Berman of The Christie Hospital said ‘My colleagues have all heard of Heathlands Village...they said I should tell you how good you are.’

ing problem – and this is truth – until one morning several weeks ago I awoke to go to morning service with my car windscreen completely frozen. You know how frustrating that can be. I opened my glove compartment to find something to de-ice it with and found a bottle of single-malt there. I have no idea how it got there but it was obvious what to do next. I poured it onto my windscreen and needless to say it did the trick. I didn’t hit all the spots but my neighbour has a worse problem than I did. He came running out and started licking the rest of my windscreen. OK that last part isn’t true – but I did have

BEN ROBBINS – BESPOKE KOSHER TRAVEL Finding the ideal holiday destination can sometimes be difficult, add to that the need to have access to kosher food, and this can make options quite limited, but Ben Robbins, the owner of Bespoke Kosher Travel, wants to change this. Through his company, Ben aims to take the stress out of holiday planning, and change not only the way that Jewish people travel, but also where they can travel to.

Having worked for 10 years as the Operations Manager for Aish UK, he was responsible for organising all the travel and logistical details for groups travelling to all sorts of interesting destinations. It was during this time, that he began to think about using his experience to start his own business. “I realised that there was definitely a gap in the market for Jews who wanted to travel. For those that keep kosher, often the only option is going somewhere like Israel or New York, or resorting to eating tuna and crackers for their whole trip. Although there were

many companies that offered kosher organised tours, there was nothing that was available for individual travellers, couples or families, and this is how Bespoke Kosher Tours fitted in.”

Bespoke Kosher Travel is not a travel agency, but rather a bespoke kosher tour operator which works closely with clients to create tailor-made packages which offer a wide range of services, from just simple meals deliveries for business trips through to all-inclusive romantic honeymoons, family trips, and even larger organised tours. They are able to offer a wide range of destinations including China, Sri Lanka and South Africa amongst others, working with local suppliers to organise all the logistical details. As Ben explains, “We can do as much or as little as the client needs from supplying meals, to suggesting activities and tours to sorting out drivers for them when they are there.”

Since starting the company 7 years ago, Ben now has 4 people working with him. As a small busi-

ness, he feels that they are able to offer the personal touch to their clients, and it is their attention to detail which sets them apart. He recognises the importance of listening to the needs of their clients to ensure that they get every detail right. “Sometimes it is the little things that they may not have thought of, like telling them the type of plugs they need, to giving them the timings for minyans at the nearest shul, which really helps. We like to go above and beyond to ensure that people have a great time whilst they are away, so that they don’t have to worry about anything.”

Throughout the planning process, each client has their own personal travel assistant on hand, who offer guidance with every aspect of the trip. They co-ordinate all areas of the planning and booking, as being contactable during the trip itself, to advise with any issues that may arise, such as delayed flights, or making changes to their itinerary.

One of the most popular destinations for many of his clients is South Africa, and Ben has developed a good reputation for his work in this area. “South Africa is a great place to visit, and that is not just because that is where my wife is from! It appeals to all age groups, and has something for everyone. Bespoke Kosher Travel has established some great contacts and connections out there to be able to show the best that the country can offer.” Ben has also recently worked with clients travelling to other destinations such as India, Sri Lanka, China and Ecuador, and even managed to organise kosher meals for a client staying on a house boat in the Galapogas Islands!

As well as exotic destinations, Ben is also happy to work with international travellers who might be visiting the UK, helping to supply kosher meals, as well as advice on activities and things to see whilst they are here. He recently assisted a client from New York who was on holiday in London with his wife and daughter. “He told me that he

wanted to have the best 48 hours in London he could, so I tried to make sure that he got it. He was really impressed by the service that we offered from delicious food to sorting theatre tickets and other activities. We even supplied Oyster cards, with details of how to get around the Underground, which they found really useful. At the end of the trip, he said that he would tell all his friends about the amazing experience he had, which is great for us, as word of mouth is really important within the Jewish community.”

The secret to organising the perfect holiday package according to Ben is empathising with his clients.

“I try to put myself in their shoes, and imagine what I would want to know if I was going to a new place, and the kind of things I might like to see, and use this to give them the best experience possible.”

For Ben, being able to give people great memories is the best part of his job. “Every traveller is different, so no two holidays are the same, and it is great to be able to give people such memorable experiences. It is always nice when we get good feedback from satisfied

customers, and makes all the hard work worthwhile. Knowing that we have been able to enable people to have the holiday that they wanted, and possibly the holiday they didn’t even know that they could have is really rewarding.”

Markiewicz strike seals Division One title

Champagne corks are popping after Faithfold A clinched the Division One championship with a 1-1 draw against North London Raiders B. Player-manager Avi Markiewicz scored the title-winning strike to cement top spot with two games to spare.

Ben Shirbini set up the 30th minute golden goal when he selflessly played a ball across goal for Markiewicz to chest down and score.

Scott Waissel leveled for the visitors after a goalmouth scramble late on but the spoils went to the ‘green and whites’.

“We needed a point and got it,” said a delighted Markiewicz.

“We won the league without losing a game, I am very proud of my team and have to thank every player who contributed over the course of the season.

“It was hard work but we played some lovely football and my team deserved it.”

As for the game, he noted: “The game followed a pattern of Faithfold domination and Raiders counterattacking.

“Our foundation was built from the back and on the rare occasions Raiders managed to get past the back line they came up against Joseph Corin who made three or four unbelievable saves.

“Raiders equalised in the last minute but in reality we should have run away with the game.

“We missed several clear opportunities, bossed the game with fantastic football but in the end

although we didn’t get the result we may have wanted we got the result that we needed.”

Markiewicz added: “We have been up for this game all week, had an almost full strength team and picking the squad never mind first XI was really difficult.

“Committed players who have been superb were left out but I think they understood what was at stake.

“Unity was shown as many turned up to support the club and join in the festivities after, which shows what this team is about.”

The clash between Redbridge Jewish Care C and Los Blancos was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

Redbridge Jewish Care B pulled out of their fixture with Scrabble.

Defending champions Oakwood A moved back into pole position in the Premier Division with a 4-0 win at Maccabi London Lions White.

Josh Cuby, Brad Wine, Jonny Quinn and Zak Collins scored the goals for Daniel Kristall’s side who are a point clear of Hendon United Sports.

With Hendon having a match in hand the two-horse title race continues to thrill.

“It was a brilliant win away at Lions who have been in-form,” said Kristall.

“This feels like a big win. We drew with them three weeks ago at home and could easily have lost that game but we stepped up a level and dominated from the first whistle.

Mill Hill Dons continued their promotion push with a 5-2 win against North London Raiders.

Harry Moss (2), Josh Cinna, Jamie Nagioff and Ryan Kramer hit the target for the hosts.

Moss opened the scoring inside 60 seconds with a left foot strike into the corner.

Jason Weldon and Adam Morrow set up Kramer for a tap in before a Nagioff deflected shot made it 3-0 on the half hour.

Moss tucked away his second of the game just before half time from a Zach Cohen assist.

Cinna completed the scoring with a 30-yard thunderbolt.

Raiders grabbed two consolation goals late on.

Dons manager Brandon Hamme said: “It was a great performance from the boys especially in the first half.

“We lacked a bit of sharpness towards the end but that’s understandable due to our lack of games recently but there are a lot of positives to take into next week’s crucial game.”

Josh Cohen fired home four goals for Hertswood Vale who thumped Temple Fortune B 10-0.

James Millet grabbed a hat-trick, Elio Elia a brace and Josh Gorb completed the scoring.

The final result could have been even more substantial as Vale led nine - nil at half time.

“Today is a proud day for the club,” said Vale boss Jacob Emanuel.

“This result says a lot about how far the club have come and is just reward for the level of work and effort we’ve put into the club since we started up at the beginning of last season.”

Dan’s Premier League Column

BY DAN SILVER Involved in 132 goals in only five years in English football, the 10th most expensive transfer of all time and is his country’s all-time record top goal scorer with 31 goals in just 65 games. Yet, I only witnessed Romelu Lukaku’s raw talent for the first time this weekend.

Manchester United moved back into second place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win as substitute Jesse Lingard gave them victory over top-four rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford. But it was the 24 year old Belgian who really stood out from the rest.

Lukaku came into the game having scored 12 goals in the Premier League so far this season, but with none - and only four shots on target - against the other teams in the top six. He had never scored in seven previous league appearances against Chelsea, so you can excuse me for thinking this was just going to be another lacklustre performance from the man signed for £75m from Everton last July.

But the 24-year-old edged in front

of Alonso to finish off a neat move involving Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial to end his dry spell against the top flight’s elite. He even came close to a second when he met Sanchez’s superb ball with a flying left-footed volley but Courtois denied his international team-mate by tipping the ball over.

Whether or not you may agree that his first touch is the same quality as a Sunday league under-6 year old, Lukaku is a real powerhouse in the air and is a reminder that the legacy of the monstrous Premier League number 9 still exists.

There are only a certain number of teams in this world I would pay to watch to see beside Newcastle and Liverpool are by far on the top of the list right now. The quality of their football is truly a joy to watch and you can just see the smile on their faces in the form of their attacking prowess of Salah, Firmino and Mane skipping past helpless defenders.

this season (23 goals, 8 assists), more than any other player and in my opinion has been the best signing for any club in the league in the past few years.

Liverpool are now unbeaten in 16 matches at home in the league - hitting excellent form at the right time of the season and I can’t see any team stopping their flamboyant performances. I think it’s fair to say that the Reds are looking on course to finish as ‘the best of the rest’.

Other results include Troy Deeney’s fine late finish to light up a dismal afternoon at Vicarage Road and give Watford a win against Everton that moved them further clear of the Premier League relegation zone. Also, Tottenham striker Harry Kane saying how even he had surprised himself with how quickly he had matched last season’s goal tally, after his late winner at relegation-threatened Crystal Palace. And finally, Glenn Murray scoring twice to help Brighton & Hove Albion to a comfortable 4-1 win as they eased their relegation worries - and increased Swansea’s.

But seriously, can someone please

explain to me as to how you can beat a star studded line-up including players such as Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba and then in the next match concede to a Dan Gosling late equaliser.

Newcastle were incredible in the first half proving why they should 100% stay in the Premier League with Dwight Gayle producing an outstanding performance by grabbing a brace in the first half.

But then it just went completely downhill with Newcastle failure Dan Gosling deciding to actually

play football for once and scoring an 89th-minute equaliser as Bournemouth came back from 2-0 down to draw.

Yes, Newcastle played very well for most of the game but they missed an abundance of gilt-edged chances to kill the game off. To be so close to victory and see it unfairly snatched away from your hands, is truly heart-breaking.

But whether I like it or not, that’s football and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

JELLY BEAN POPCORN • • • •

Ingredients:

10 Cups of Popped Popcorn Salt 3 tbsp. Butter (Salted) 3 cups Mini Marshmallows

• Jelly Beans – Regular Sized • Jelly Beans – Miniature Sized • Colourful Sprinkles

Method:

1. Pop 10 cups of popcorn and salt liberally and place in a large bowl.

2. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a medium sauce pan. Once the butter is

melted, add 3 cups of mini marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are melted. Turn off the heat as soon as the last marshmallow has melted.

3. Pour 3/4 of the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn in the bowl and then gently fold the popcorn with a spoon until most of the kernels are covered in mixture.

4. Pour the marshmallow popcorn onto a prepared cookie sheet.

5. Drizzle the remaining marshmallow mixture over the popcorn on the cookie sheet.

6. Sprinkle the Jelly Beans and sprinkles over the popcorn.

7. Allow the popcorn to cool. Break apart into pieces and serve.

Facts about why we eat Hamantaschen on Purim Hamantaschen are known as ‘Oznei Haman’ in Hebrew which are literally translated as ‘Haman’s ears’. ears’

There is an old legend that Haman wore a three-cornered hat, and to commemorate his downfall, we eat a three-cornered pastry.

The Talmud states that when Esther was in the king’s palace her food was not kosher so she survived on various beans and seeds. This is why it’s customary to eat Hamantaschen filled with poppy-seeds.

The classic Hamantaschen was always filled with poppy seeds.

‘Mohn’ means poppy-seeds and ‘tash’ means pocket.

Thus, Hamantaschen means ‘poppy-seed filled pockets.’

Mordechai sent letters in the post to all the Jews to tell them of the threat of Haman killing all the Jews.

Because he was worried his enemies would intercept them, he hid the letters inside pastries. Therefore, we eat pastries with a filling!

Tash in Hebrew means ‘weaken’. Thus, when eating Hamantaschen we celebrate the weakening of Haman.

A Hamantaschen is hidden with a delicious filling inside. Just like Hashem hid himself in the Purim story and performed countless miracles.

The Midrash says that when Haman recognised the merit of our three forefathers, his strength immediately weakened. Because of this we eat three cornered pastries.

Parshat Ki Tisa In a Nutshell In this week’s parshah the Jewish people are told that each person should contribute half a shekel of silver to the Mishkan (Sanctuary).

Betzalel and Aholiav are placed in charge of the Mishkan’s construction, and the Jewish people are once again commanded to keep Shabbat.

When Moshe does not return from Har Sinai, the Jewish people make a golden calf and worshiped it. Moshe descends from Har Sinai carrying the Luchot (Tablets) which are engraved

with the Ten Commandments. In shock, Moshe drops the Luchot and breaks them.

News Bites PLEASE DON’T CALL THE POLICE FOR PIZZA! Police in the Texan city of San Antonio are urging people to stop calling 911 for trivial reasons and only do it for emergencies.

In a videoclip online, the SAPD force’s Chief William McManus read out a number of 911 calls that didn’t qualify as emergencies. In the SAPD video, chief McManus read a series of ridiculous calls, including one asking for a pizza.

“Yes, hi, I’m starving, can I get a large pepperoni from the closest pizza joint?” one caller said.

He then responds that “SAPD does not stand for San Antonio Plumbing Department or San Antonio Pizza Department”.

He also read another call: “Yes, I have a water leak in my house and I don’t know what to do.”

Heavy snowfall is hitting parts of the UK, causing road and rail disruption.

Police say driving conditions are “treacherous” in places as a band of wintry weather and very low temperatures sweeps westwards.

Hundreds of trains are cancelled, many schools are closed and forecasters say some rural communities may be cut off.

Kent, Surrey, Suffolk and Sussex are among the worst-hit counties, seeing 5-10cm of snow, while

NICOLA ‫ ֵֽא ׁ ֶשת ַֽחיִ ל ִמי יִ ְמ ָצא‬SMAJE-ROSENBLOOM

Nicola Smaje-Rosenbloom is one busy lady. When she isn’t working at Etz Chaim Synagogue in Leeds, or looking after her family, she is helping to raise money for local charities and over the past six years has raised thousands for organisations within her community.

Her interest for helping others and doing charitable work seems to be in her blood. Her late grandmother, Joyce Frazer was a stalwart of the Wizo charity committee in Leeds for over 60 years and became involved in the organisation when she was first married to her husband, Sydney.

When Joyce passed away in August 2015, Nicola felt that she wanted to do something in her grandmother’s memory and starting a new Wizo group felt to her like the perfect memorial to her. She helped to re-launch the Blanche Dugdale which was originally formed over 65 years ago and was close to her grandmother’s heart. Nicola explains, “My grandmother was part of the original Leeds Blanche Dugdale Wizo and was

involved in the organisation for most of her life. She held almost every position possible, so when she passed away I felt that I wanted to continue the tradition and keep her memory alive by being involved myself.”

Wizo Leeds Community Fundraiser, Deidre Cline, believes that Nicola’s enthusiasm for the Wizo group very much reflects grandmother’s own passion. “Nicola is a dynamic bundle of energy who has Wizo running through her veins which she has inherited from her grandmother. Since being part of the group, Nicola has not only become a very involved member, but has also encouraged other women to get involved with Wizo.” Since re-launching the group, Nicola has organised fundraising events to help not only raise awareness of the cause, but also much needed funds so that it can continue with its hard work. Each year, the group tries to organise 4 – 5 fundraising events throughout the year, with 1 or 2 main larger events such as the Annual Coffee Morning, and Nicola has been instrumental in organising and promoting these events.

Recently she travelled to Israel to visit some of the Wizo projects to see what the money that has been raised has helped to fund. This gave her a better understanding of the work that the charity does, and encouraged her to work even harder to continue to raise money for the

charity. Deidre feels that the work Nicola is ‘a real inspiration’ to others, and a great asset to the group.

A personal connection with another local charity, Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA), led to Nicola volunteering for the organisation.

As she explains, “LJHA is a charity that is very close to my heart, as I have benefitted directly. I was a single parent with a young child, and the LJHA really helped me by offering me accommodation whilst I got myself back on track.

Thankfully, I am now happily married to a great guy, we have recently had a baby together, and I am in a much better place, but I wanted to give something back to show my appreciation and gratitude for their support, and this was a great way to do it.“ Another way that Nicola helps her community is through her involvement with a local chairty which raises money for two mental health charities, Leeds Mind and also Neshama which is part of Leeds Jewish Welfare Board. Nicola originally got involved purely as a volunteer, but last year was asked to join the committee as one of the directors. “I was really happy to become a director, as I think it is a really great initiative and I enjoy being involved in something that really helps people with mental health issues within the local community.”

As if all this was not enough,

she also has a young daughter, Millyella, who has just turned one, as well as an 11 year old son, Jake, and two step-children, Natalya and Zakary, from her husband, Daren, meaning that she is kept very busy at home as well as at work. For the past 8 years, she has been the administrator at Etz Chaim Synagogue in Leeds, and is very much involved in all aspects of running the synagogue from helping to organise the shul calendar each year, to updating the website. With over thousand members within the community, there is always something to do to keep her busy. “I really enjoy the marketing and sale elements of my role and the chance to organise events for the whole community. It is a great feeling when an event you have been working so hard on is well attended, and everyone enjoys it and has a good time. There is a buzz in the community afterwards, which is really nice.”

As well as celebrations, within the shul there are often sad

occasions such as bereavements, and Nicola also helps to support families at this emotional time. Etz Chaim is the only synagogue in Leeds with its own funeral directors, and she is also responsible for working with the Chevra Kadisha (Burial Society), as well as dealing with bereaved members not only from Etz Chaim but also from Bradford Synagogue.

Claire Brown, one of the Vice Presidents of the shul, works closely with Nicola. She recognises how hard she works for the synagogue and the many different ways that she helps the members. Claire explains, “Not only does she deal with all the admin, but she is also the first point of contact and the face/ voice of the shul to anyone who might get in touch. She has often gone above and beyond the call of duty to help the members of the shul, and we are all really lucky to have her”.

Spray the snow away - Heavy, wet snow can be difficult to clear with a shovel, but a quick squirt of cooking spray on the shovel head will help. The shovel will

Dropping out?

The vast majority of clients that come in to our 10 Week programme complete the programme and many move on to a continuing programme. One thing that they can all tell you is that they all gain a lot of knowledge in our programme about healthy eating and exercise.

Almost all of them can also tell you that there have been positive changes to their health. However occasionally, someone signs up for our programme and still thinks there is a magic pill we give for success. I wish there was! Weight loss always requires making some changes in eating habits and activity, but it is usually a few small changes that can make a big difference. So we were all surprised when Mendel, after this third week decided not to continue. I would

like to take you into the room for the conversation between Mendel and myself.

Mendel came into the programme with a goal of weight loss.

As he is a Maggid Shiur and his life is learning, there isn’t a lot of activity in his day. When Mendel came in, he seemed ready to make some changes and was very compliant with his exercise assignments. Even before he started our programme, he was eating relatively healthy. So when we don’t see weight dropping when in theory it should be, we have to take a closer look at what is going on. After I asked Mendel a lot of questions, it became apparent to me that he was simply over consuming. When I brought this up, he said to me that he is only eating healthy choices and gave me a quick overview of most of what he eats on any given

day. But then I asked him the question that I wanted to get to, which was, “How much are you eating?”

When he responded concerning his supper the night before I knew that my intuition had been correct and although he was eating healthy food, he was eating too much of it.

Mendel’s response was really interesting. He told me that if he eats any less than he is presently eating, he will be hungry and then he also proceeded to tell me that he thought my programme had some kind of “Chiddush”, some kind of new idea for weight loss that would allow him to eat as much he wanted to and still lose weight. I explained that the “Chiddush” of my programme is that unlike all of the gimmick programmes out there, we rely on proven and tested science in order to give people a programme for sustained weight

loss that becomes part of their life.

We are not interested in losing a lot of weight quickly that will only come back on.

Apparently, Mendel couldn’t accept that he would have to make certain changes to be successful. I explained to him that he might want to eat more, but if he was following our well balanced food plan, he shouldn’t be feeling hunger. Why he wanted to eat more had nothing to do with hunger. His meals had adequate proteins, unrefined carbohydrates and healthy fats. He also was hydrated. So we investigated two possibilities. One, that even though he was full he needed to follow the 20 minute rule and stop eating until his brain signalled that he was full or two, that he is just used to eating these size portions and it’s really a matter of habit and enjoying the taste more than real hunger.

Instead of troubleshooting his problem with me, he became combative and wanted to blame the programme. Here we had an opportunity to problem solve. I know from my own weight loss adventure many years ago and from working with people to help them lose weight over the last 20 years that without making some effort, there isn’t a real result. For some that means being a little hungry until your body gets used to the idea. We try to work out peoples’ food plans with snacks built in and enough food to keep hunger to a minimum. Some will have to give up some of foods they may like if these foods are addictive to the person and they can’t limit their portions. Some people may enjoy sedentary living, but one day because of it they won’t be able to enjoy life, so they have to give up an easy lifestyle to one that will be unfamiliar and even uncomfortable at first, but very beneficial and even enjoyable in the long run. The good news is that after learning healthy and controlled eating and doing a little bit of exercise, people usually feel so good that they don’t even want to go back to how things were.

We all know that change is difficult. It is so difficult that the great Baal Musar Rav Yisrael Salanter said that changing one Midah (character trait) is more difficult than learning the entire Talmud.

Achieving practical results requires constant awareness and effort.

When it comes to eating things are especially difficult. We have to eat properly in order to function properly. We can’t NOT eat! But we have to come to terms with the fact that nothing is free and without sacrifice if we want to reap benefits.

It took Mendel a couple of weeks to realize that in our conversation at his previous session, what I had said was correct. It took him some experimenting, but in the end he did indeed realize that he could eat a little bit less, not be hungry and lose weight comfortably. After dropping 2 kilo over three weeks of making small changes, he decided to come back and now is continuing to push forward making more small and incremental positive changes in both his eating and exercise.

Like most things in life, there is no free ride. And that means that sometimes we have to make some sacrifice to gain a result. It took a while for Mendel to realize there is no instant fix or magic cure for weight loss, but also realize that making a few changes had him reaping great reward. He was able to “add hours to your day, days to your year and years to your life.”

INSTRUCTIONS • 1 pound ground lamb, turkey, or beef • 2 teaspoons shawarma seasoning blend • 2 garlic cloves, grated on a microplane • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper • 1 egg yolk Garnish: • lemon wedges, chopped parsley and cilantro, tahini

PREPARATION Preheat oven to 190°C. 1. Line a baking sheet with foil.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine ground meat, shawarma seasoning, garlic, salt, pepper, and egg yolk.

3. Form into meatballs and place on lined sheet.

4. Roast meatballs for 20 minutes or until cooked through. Arrange on platter or in pita with desired garnishes.

ONE BOWL AMAZING CHOCOLATE CAKE Everyone has a go-to recipe for a one-bowl cake. Here’s mine. It’s a combination of three or four recipes and, yes, I think it’s the best. Or should I say amazing? The mayonnaise and pudding really moisten the cake, and you’ll also score beauty points with presentation because, as I always say, anything baked in a Bundt pan will impress your guests. It’s like a self-decorated cake.

2 cups all-purpose flour 1½ cups sugar 1 cup non dairy milk, soy or almond work well ½ cup extra virgin olive oil ½ cup mayonnaise 3 eggs 1 (4-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix 2 teaspoons vanilla ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1¼ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 175°C. Lightly grease a Bundt pan with non-stick baking spray.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine all ingredients. Mix at medium speed for 2 minutes.

Pour into prepared Bundt pan.

Bake at 175°C for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let cool before glazing if desired and serving.
