Israel Defence Forces is continuing its extensive military campaign with Hamas in Gaza while diplomatic talks continue over a three-stage hostage deal.

A Hamas delegation was due to discuss the latest deal in Cairo yesterday following brokered terms by Israeli, American, Qatari and Egyptian officials in Paris. Key points are the release of over 130 remaining hostages in exchange for a truce and release of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

However, media reports in Israel are not overly confident of a breakthrough in negotiations.

IDF casualties have reached 560 with 223 soldiers falling since the start of ground operations.

Suspect charged in Golders Green incident

Shomrim NW London have been instrumental in Gabriel Abdullah being remanded into custody following an incident in Golders Green on Monday afternoon.

The 34-year-old is charged with possession of an offensive weapon and racially-aggravated affray.

Shomrim received multiple calls of an alleged attempted assault involving an offensive weapon at a kosher supermarket on Hamilton Road. Five volunteers attended the scene with a first volunteer arriving within 45 seconds of the incident.

Shomrim volunteers and supermarket staff followed the suspect to a residential address nearby. Shomrim surrounded the building and the suspect emerged having changed his hoodie and shoes.

When Metropolitan Police officers arrived, Shomrim assisted with detaining him.

Police discovered a knife and clothing matching the description at the address.

Shomrim have assisted Barnet Police and Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command in supporting the investigation including CCTV enquiries.

Shomrim, who play a key role in monitoring and feeding back to police community concerns, praised the heroic actions of supermarket staff and thanked

In related news, CAA released a new poll on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day which shows worrying rates of antisemitism among young people.

King’s College London surveyed British adults’ attitudes towards Jews, using YouGov. A quarter of British people over 64 years of age believe Israel treats the Palestinians like the Nazis treated Jews.

Results were a third among 18-24 year olds, a demographic CAA said was the “most frightening”.

A CAA spokesperson said: “The rhetoric that we are seeing online, on television and on our streets is radicalising the British public. Our country needs an urgent rethink about how we teach about antisemitism. If young people cannot see the relationship between the genocidal antisemitism of the Nazis and the genocidal antisemitism of Hamas, and, worse still, refuse to talk about how our attitudes towards Israel and its supporters are influenced by antisemitic prejudice, then we are clearly not talking about antisemitism properly. Our education is failing the next generation, and our society is suffering as a result. It is British Jews who are paying the price.”

Gaza war marked at HMD global events

Holocaust Remembrance Day events took place around the world against the backdrop of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Twenty survivors of Nazi death camps marked the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp at the infamous site.

Global and community leaders led events in cities and towns to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust and other genocides.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was “no greater absurdity” than South Africa’s court case at The Hague and Israel being accused of genocide.

Holding Hitler’s infamous book Mein Kampf in Arabic, he said Hamas were the ‘new Nazis’.

He explained: “Our fighters found this book in civilians homes in the Gaza Strip.

They found extensive antisemitic and Nazi literature. This is what they educate their children on. There will be no element that educates its children after we eliminate Hamas in Gaza, not only for terrorism but also for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people.

“The main lesson of the Holocaust is that we will defend ourselves. Nobody will do this for us. We must continue to be determined and return fire against those who seek our destruction.

“The State of the Jews arose from the ashes of the Holocaust in order to promise a defensive shield for the Jewish people. Israel, like every sovereign country, has the basic right to defend itself.

Nobody will take this from us or stop us from implementing it.”

Commenting on the Hamas conflict, he added: “We are fighting a war, the justice of which is unparalleled, with an army, the morality of which is unparalleled. This war was forced on us by an abhorrent enemy. If they could they would have massacred all of us. If we do not eliminate the Hamas terrorists, these ‘new Nazis’, the next massacre is only a matter of time.

“We are determined to finish the task. I have directed the Defense Minister and Finance Minister to submit to the government an unprecedented plan to strengthen our security industries for decades ahead. We will do so with immense investments to ensure our security,

independence and freedom of action.

We have no other choice apart from total victory. We will win because we have a strong people and daring fighters to defend the eternity of Israel.”

US President Joe Biden warned of a surge in antisemitism following the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.

“It is unacceptable,” he said. “We cannot remember all that Jewish survivors of the Holocaust experienced and then stand silently by when Jews are attacked and targeted again today. Without equivocation or exception, we must forcefully push back against attempts to ignore, deny, distort and revise history. This includes Holocaust denialism and efforts to minimise the horrors that Hamas perpetrated on October 7.”

Biden has committed under his presidency to fight antisemitism at every turn.

He said. “It is our shared moral responsibility to stand up to antisemitism and hate-fuelled violence at home and abroad and to make real the promise of ‘Never Again’.”

Pope Francis said war can never be justified.

“The remembrance and condemnation of that horrific extermination of millions of Jews and of other faiths, which occurred in the first half of the last century, help us all not to forget that the logic of hatred and violence can never be justified, because they deny our very humanity,” he said.

It was essential, he added, to “learn from those who bear witness to the horrors of the Holocaust and all genocides”.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to safeguard the Jewish community in a recorded video address at the Guildhall in London.

“We will do whatever it takes to keep our Jewish community safe, but more than that, we will be far bolder and more assertive in defending our liberal values and our way of life. We’ll end the passive tolerance of words and actions that will go against everything we stand for, and we’ll tackle the root cause of this hatred with the most ambitious national effort to educate future generations.”

The Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle led a candle-lighting ceremony in Parliament.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, at City Hall, said this year felt “more important than ever” with antisemitism on the rise around the world.”

He observed: “The Holocaust is one of the most harrowing events in history and it’s vital that we continue to hold events like this to ensure we never forget those who were killed and never forget where prejudice, racism and hatred can lead if allowed to fester unchecked and unchallenged. As Mayor, I’ll continue to ensure we take a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism and hatred in our city and work to unite our communities as we build a better London for everyone.”

The Knesset, Germany’s Bundestag, New York City Hall, Geneva’s Jet d’Eau and Prague’s Cathedral were among those lit up. Parliament, the London Eye and Wembley Stadium joined the list.

“Holocaust education is critical in confronting the darkness of ignorance and intolerance,” said WJC President Ronald S. Lauder. “It is our collective obligation to honour the memory of the six million Jewish lives lost and fight back against the rising hatred of today.”

“By understanding the suffering and perseverance of the Jewish people during one of history’s darkest periods, we can foster a more inclusive and tolerant world,” he added.

In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on German citizens to defend democracy and fight antisemitism. “‘Never again’ is every day,” Scholz said. “Stay visible! Stay audible! Against antisemitism, against racism, against misanthropy and for our democracy.”

Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella said the Holocaust was “the most abominable of crimes”.

“The dead of Auschwitz, scattered in the wind, continually warn us man’s path proceeds along rough and risky roads,” he said. “This is also manifested by the return, in the world, of dangerous instances of antisemitism, of prejudice that traces back to ancient anti-Jewish stereotypes, reinforced by social media without control or modesty.”

Mattarella also recalled that Italy under Fascism adopted “despicable racist laws” against Jews that were the “opening chapter of the terrible book of extermination”.

City may scupper Bevis Marks plans

If the policy is retained it will prevent new developments from overshadowing the Grade 1 listed synagogue.

The plan seeks to unilaterally limit the definition of the synagogue’s protected setting by tightly drawing its boundary and dismissing its clear sky-view backdrop. In doing so it is explicitly rejecting its own planning committee’s decision in 2021 to refuse planning permission for a tower at 31 Bury St on account of the harm it would have caused to the synagogue’s setting.

Professor Abigail Green, Oxford University, commented: “The City’s attempt to narrowly define the synagogue’s setting demonstrates their lack of understanding of Jewish history, religion and culture. Even when presented with this information, they chose to disregard it.

Bevis Marks Synagogue is British Jewry’s

most important house of worship and as such it warrants robust protections.”

Bevis Marks took official steps to establish an eruv in the City of London in December 2022.

Three planning applications were submitted to City of London, Islington and Hackney for London’s first ever eruv in Central London.

The boundary extends through Riverside Footpath Underneath Blackfriars Road Bridge, Ludgate Hill Junction with Ludgate Circus, Holborn Viaduct and Holborn Circus, Farringdon Street Junction With Charterhouse, and Goswell Road Junction with Baltic Street.

The eruv was established under the auspices of the Sephardi Beth Din of the S&P Sephardi community. The historic shul’s eruv would be a first in its 350-year history.

Known as the “cathedral synagogue” of British Jewry, Bevis Marks was built when Jews were allowed into England in 1656. It is the oldest synagogue in Europe in continuous use.

Initially for local residents, today it is a centre of worship for people from all over the world.

Built in 1701 in the Ward of Aldgate after the Jews banished from England by Edward 1 in 1290 were allowed back by Oliver Cromwell, the synagogue has survived the Blitz in World War Two and two IRA bomb attacks in the 1990s.

Mizrachi UK take Rabbis to Israel on mission Mizrachi UK led a three-day solidarity mission for British Rabbis to Israel last week. As Rabbi Shaw, Mizrachi UK CEO said, ‘Mizrachi UK felt a responsibility to bring our communities and Rabbinic leaders to Israel during this difficult time and we are proud to be working tirelessly to make this happen, this is the first of several missions we will be leading.’

On Monday, the Rabbis heard powerful words from Rabbi Doron Perez, World Mizrachi’s Managing Director who on October 7th had one son shot in the leg and the other is still missing. Following this, they travelled to Tel Aviv to the “Bring Them Home Now” headquarters where they heard an emotional story from Dani Miran the father of Omri who is being held in captivity in Gaza.

Later they visited injured soldiers in Ichilov hospital before traveling to Machane Shura, the Rabbinate army base where bodies of war victims were brought.

The group were profoundly moved at the stories of how the victims were treated with such respect and honour. Three soldiers’ bodies were there at the time of the visit

which was the day 24 soldiers were tragically killed.

On Tuesday the trip took in the sombre sights of the kibbutzim and towns in the Gaza envelope. The first stop was in Sderot, where they viewed the sight of the destroyed police station. Hamas took it over in the surprise attack early Simchat Torah morning killing 10 police officers.

Eventually the building was dismantled by the IDF killing the terrorists inside after a couple of days of intense fighting. They were honoured to meet with police officer Yair Avinoam, who heroically defended Sderot in those early hours.

Next, they headed to the hesder yeshiva where they heard inspired words from the Rosh HaYeshiva who recounted the heroic actions of his boys on the day, as well as telling the tour how they would not lie down and surrender, rather they would rebuild stronger.

The group then went to the site of the Nova Music festival in Kibbutz Reim, following by a haunting visit to Kibbutz Be’eri.

They heard from Elad Keidar whose father and mother were murdered, although he

didn’t know for two months what happened to his mother, ultimately finding out that she had been slaughtered in Israel and then her body was taken back to Gaza, where it is still being held today. Rabbi Kleiman of BHH in Leeds delivered the most moving Azkara for this man’s parents whilst they stood in their home.

Following this they travelled to Ofakim and heard from Michal Sandhouse of the heroic actions of her brother and nephew Moshe and Eliad Ohayon before they also were killed by Hamas terrorists.

On Wednesday morning the Rabbis heard from Jacqui and Yaron Vital who told them about their beautiful daughter Adi, who was murdered defending her family in Kibbutz Holit, before the group travelled to ZAKA headquarters. ‘No words can describe the things we heard from the gentleman who led the southern operation’ said one rabbi. Rabbi Greg Bank of Cheadle added, ‘We as rabbis have met Gedolim and learnt from some of the most learned people worldwide, and the man we met from ZAKA was one of the most holy, inspiring individuals that many of us had

ever met’.

From here the group travelled to Har Herzl where Jeremy Kurnetz guided them round the vast cemetery. They attended a funeral for another fallen soldier. They also visited all the graves of the recently buried.

Before meeting with Colonel Golan Vach from the instant response unit, the group met with displaced families who have been living in hotels since the tragedies of October 7th where they were inspired by the resilience and the determination of the families.

One of the Rabbis commented, ‘I feel we were zoche to be part of a truly amazing, inspiring if, inevitably, often sobering trip.

It was really meaningful and extremely moving. Huge credit to Mizrachi for stepping up’.

David Reuben, Executive Director of Mizrachi UK said, ‘We have a duty and obligation to support our family in Israel. All our communities must go, see it for themselves and give support to Am Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael.’ He concluded, ‘We will do all the work that is necessary to enable any community that wishes - to go.’

International Court of Injustice Dear Editor I am not at all surprised at the findings of the ICJ – possibly to be renamed the International Court of INjustice!

Instead of an impartial statement, ICJ only brings one side to task – Israel! They do not really take into consideration the unspeakable horrors and atrocities perpetrated by Hamas whose very name let us remind ourselves -means violence!

I was in Israel on the 7th October, which should have been a day of Rejoicing, in which my four grandsons, whilst at prayer, were called up to the IDF under dire emergency situation. Instead of putting Hamas on trial for their deliberate aim of Genocide against Israel, which they constantly openly admit and declare, this Court did exactly the opposite!

This is not justice.

They have short memories and do not wish to remember that Hamas and all Israel’s detractors initiated every single one of the 10 wars fought against us - as stated

by Colonel Richard Kemp CBE, Commanding Officer in the Afghanistan War. Israel a small country with a CIVILIAN army of law-abiding citizens carrying on with their peaceful and productive daily lives, unlike TERRORIST Hamas, was forced to engage in these wars to fight for our lives, that of our families, and for our very existence.

What does this Court and others want from Israel? Perhaps to lie back and allow Hamas to murder us? Is ICJ aware that many of our beautiful young soldiers have given up their very lives in order to minimise Palestinian civilian casualties, abiding by Torah morals and dictates.

This is almost unheard of and not easily adhered to in warfare! Whilst it has left deeply grieving families, nevertheless our soldiers’ noble actions have left them proud. Jews believe in the value of EVERY single person’s life, not just their own, regardless of race or religion. However, if one comes to decimate you, surely one has no option other than to retaliate until evil disappears! We have lost 6 million brethren due to sheer evil, unable to defend ourselves. Never again with the help of the A-lmighty!

Our fervent prayer is that we will all, very soon, enjoy worldwide peace. Amen.

___________________________________ A Disruptive and Dangerous Man Dear Editor I am at a loss to understand what is going on.

Gary Lineker has now sparked greater controversy by saying that he liked a tweet defending Labour MP Kate Osamor after she was suspended by the Labour Party following a post about Holocaust Memorial Day in which she said that Gaza should be remembered as a genocide.

This follows recent tweets where Lineker has called for Israel to be banned from international football, endorsing comments from an academic who described Israel’s actions in Gaza as ‘textbook genocide’ and Stop Oil who likened oil executives to the Nazi architects of the Holocaust including Adolf Eichmann.

He also recently received an award from Amnesty International, hardly a friend of Israel.

This man has serious form. Lineker has not said one apologetic word nor made one criticism about the 1,200 innocent Jews who were murdered by Hamas on 7 October or the hostages that were taken and those that remain in captivity.

Notwithstanding strong protests across the board from the Jewish community, the media and numerous MPs, including a petition calling for him to be removed from the BBC, he still remains intact and in situ.

Even more pressure must be exerted on the BBC, OFCOM and relevant football authorities by the Jewish community including the Board of Deputies to remove him from our television screens once and for all.

Arguably, these tweets are an incitement to racial hatred provoking antisemitic behaviour and therefore a matter for the Police and Crown Prosecution Service. Lineker is a disruptive and dangerous man. We wait in constant anticipation.

perennial earache from clearly unqualified commentators and South African politicians on the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel last Friday, may I offer to dispel some disinformation, so that we may at least frame debates about the judgment in the correct terms.

1) This was a judgment of the ICJ, *not* the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The former is the international equivalent of a civil court, hearing disputes between states regarding legal treaties. The latter is a criminal court, which is only able to go after individuals, not states.

2) South Africa’s main case against Israel is about breaches of the Genocide Convention. The ICJ will take years to decide if such an genocide actually happened. It said nothing about that on Friday.

3) However, while the main case is ongoing, the ICJ can make urgent injunctions (officially known as “Provisional Measures”), just like an ordinary civil court can. In short, to do this the ICJ must believe that, before it rules in the main case, there is an imminent risk of irreversible harm (which does *not* mean genocide) to the legal rights of one of the parties under the Genocide Convention.

That is what Friday’s ruling was about.

4) South Africa requested 9 of these injunctions against Israel, relating to preventing further breaches, ensuring humanitarian aid access, preventing and punishing officials who make genocidal statements, preserving evidence, and reporting back to the ICJ.

Critically, however, the very first injunction South Africa requested (“(1) The State of Israel shall immediately suspend its military operations in and against Gaza”) was not ordered by the ICJ. This was South Africa’s most important request - the legal equivalent of screaming “CEASEFIRE NOW”.

6) Therefore, South Africa can reasonably be said to have ‘won’ this stage of its case - but not fully - while Israel can reasonably said to have ‘lost’, especially as it sought to have the entire case thrown out of the ICJ’s list.

It is therefore unhelpful that South African politicians, already politically motivated to bring these proceedings, decided to make the bizarre claim that none of the ICJ’s injunctions are possible to implement without a ceasefire, and therefore that the ruling ‘implied’ a ceasefire. If South Africa is claiming it didn’t ever *need* the ICJ to grant a ceasefire injunction for all of the other injunctions it granted to work, why did South Africa specifically *ask* the ICJ for one? And why didn’t the ICJ grant one?

It is plain that the ICJ’s ruling is a legal blow for Israel - but it is by no means what the claimants to these proceedings (and supporters of the ruling) appear to think it is.

NJA “Terminate UNRWA Funding” The National Jewish Assembly (NJA) commends the decision of the United Kingdom government to temporarily halt its funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). This decision comes in response to deeply troubling allegations that certain members of UNRWA staff were directly involved in committing the the heinous 7 October invasion of Israel launched by Hamas.

According to multiple sources including UN watchdog UN Watch, UNRWA members were complicit in the October 7 massacre, during which Hamas terrorists targeted, raped, shot, beheaded, and burned Israeli civilians and civilians of other nationalities. The NJA firmly supports the UK government’s decision to suspend funding as it reflects a commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards and the pursuit of justice, and is a searing indictment of the profoundly corrupt, rotten, and terror-enabling UNRWA. UNRWA, despite pretending to carry-out a humanitarian mission, maintains connections with Palestinian terrorist organisations such as Hamas, and many of its members were directly involved in the October 7 invasion. Earlier this month, UN Watch exposed a Telegram channel with over 3,000 UNWRA teachers that was replete with terrorist glorification, Islamic extremism, and antisemitism.

wholeheartedly applaud the UK government’s swift action in response to these grave allegations. The NJA stands firmly against any form of terrorism, and the seriousness of these allegations warrants a thorough investigation. However, even before the revelations of UNWRA members’ complicity in the October 7 massacre, there was already extensive damning documentation of UNWRA. The UK government should not only suspend funding UNWRA, but terminate it completely.”

This suspension of funding presents an opportunity for the UK government to evaluate its support for an organisation deservedly mired in controversy.

The NJA encourages the UK government not only to continue its rigorous review but also to consider permanently terminating funding to UNRWA if the allegations are substantiated. The NJA firmly believes that the repugnant nature of these allegations warrants decisive action, including completely defunding the organisation.

As an organisation committed to safeguarding the interests and heritage of the Jewish community, the NJA stands in solidarity with efforts to ensure that aid is provided in a manner consistent with the pursuit of peace and security.

The NJA trusts that the UK government will continue to uphold these values by terminating its funding of UNWRA.

Held in memory of Dr Abraham Levy, former LSJS Deputy President, the conference provided participants with a choice of 18 sessions, ranging from how to teach Jewish ethics to young children, inspirational Hebrew reading methods, and inclusivity in the classroom. Jewish Futures Commemorates HMD with Holocaust Survivor Manfred Goldberg To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Jewish Futures, coordinated a speaker tour for Manfred Goldberg, speaking to various schools, universities and groups in London to tell his story. Aish on Campus, orchestrated the first poignant event at University College London (UCL) to pay tribute to the millions of Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The event featured the remarkable Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg, who shared his poignant tale of survival with students from seven London universities.

Manfred Goldberg, a living testament to resilience and hope, captivated the audience with his personal experiences during one of the darkest chapters in human history. The event, organised by Jewish Futures, aimed to honor Holocaust Memorial Day by providing students with the unique opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from a survivor, thereby raising awareness and promoting a deeper understanding of historical realities.

In addition to the impactful event at UCL,

Jewish Futures also organised a second compelling talk by Manfred Goldberg for a packed room of young professionals at the Aish hub in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day. Manfred also spoke to 300 JFS students as well as hundreds of Yavneh students as part of Holocaust Memorial Day ensuring as many young people as possible could hear from him first hand. Recognising the rarity of opportunities for young people to hear directly from Holocaust survivors as the years pass, these talks serve as a crucial educational initiative by Jewish Futures.

Schochets Celebrate 30 Years at Mill Hill

LSJS’ Weekly Women’s Parasha Class now Free

A special Shabbos was held in celereflected on the way the Schochets transbration of Rabbi Yitzchak and Chanie formed the community.

Schochet’s thirty years at the Mill Hill Neil Minsky, a former community United Synagogue.

Having arrived in 1993 the Schochets transformed the small community of 400 families into one of the most vibrant Orthodox synagogues in the UK, now in excess of 1800 families. It also boasts near a thousand children and teenagers.

The synagogue was standing room only as more than 600 people came to pay tribute during the Shabbat morning celebrations.

Chazan Yanky Lemmer was flown in from New York and Chief Rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis addressed the community during the service.

Tyler Shalson finds his new talent Ten year old, (yes ten years old) Tyler Shalson in just nine months of having started playing table tennis, he showed just what an incredible young player he is.

Tyler has just been ranked number 6 nationally in England under 11’s and this past fortnight has participated in his first adult/senior tournament, the Barnet Band 1 at the Barnet Table Tennis Centre, which he won in an incredible heart stopping final 21/19 in the fifth and deciding game, beating his older brother Kai (aged 14) and also a very good player.

He also represented his school, Radlett Prep in the National Independent Schools Association (ILA) in Nottingham playing against representatives from all over England winning both the singled and the doubles.

Tyler appears to be a natural talent, he is now coached by Eli Baraty at Ebatts so can only get better and is clearly one to be watched for the future.

Tu B’shvat fun The 20th Finchley Scouts celebrated Tu B’shvat with a planting session.

Youngsters made artistic trees and flowers and gained insights into the lifecycle of plants. The highlight was a planting session with herb seeds. The

GIFT’s 4th Mission Tu B’Shvat joy at receives UK donations Kisharon GIFT, recently concluded its fourth solidarity mission to Israel, marking a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts to support those affected by the conflict. The culmination of this mission saw containers filled with more than 32 tonnes of essential goods arriving in Israel, collected through GIFT’s dedicated donation drives in the UK. In response to the outbreak of the conflict on 7th October 2023, GIFT swiftly mobilised 900 volunteers who worked tirelessly to collect a wide array of items essential for evacuees in Israel. The donated goods included clothes, toiletries, food, thermal clothes, torches, toys, stationery, headphones, and winter accessories such as hats, gloves, and scarves.

On GIFT’s fourth solidarity mission to Israel, over 30 volunteers engaged in various activities to provide support and relief to struggling communities. Volunteers worked on farms, visited injured individuals in hospitals, prepared BBQs for soldiers, and organized events to connect with evacuees and their families. The highlight of the mission came after months of negotiations with customs, as the containers of donated goods finally arrived in Israel, allowing trip participants to unload and distribute the much-needed supplies.

in Rannana, from where the supplies were distributed to charities across Israel. These charities are actively supporting evacuees and the families of lone soldiers who have been significantly affected by the ongoing conflict.

Shira Joseph, GIFT’s Director of Programmes, shared her emotional experience, stating, “I was moved witnessing the families’ reactions to the items they were receiving. We took 30 boxes to the town of Shlomi up north, where evacuees had been living in hotels for three months. The joy on the children’s faces as they received new toys, games, and clothes was indescribable.”

GIFT remains committed to its mission of providing support and relief to those affected by crises, and this recent solidarity trip to Israel is a testament to their unwavering dedication. The organisation expresses gratitude to its volunteers, donors, and partners who have played a crucial role in making all the missions and donation drives a success.

This impressive outcome will fuel the expansion of JTeen’s supportline services and education programs, fortifying support for Jewish teenagers’ mental well-being.

The 36-hour campaign, concluded last week, garnered widespread support from individuals, businesses, and organizations, emphasizing the community’s commitment to addressing the rising mental health challenges among Jewish teenagers.

The funds will bolster JTeen’s confidential supportline services, providing essential support for teenagers navigating mental health struggles.

A significant portion of the funds will also be allocated to expand JTeen’s education programs. These initiatives aim

to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and equip teenagers with vital coping mechanisms, fostering a culture of understanding and empathy.

The success of the campaign reflects the community’s growing appreciation for teenage mental health education.

This deal arose in a team game. West’s weak-jump overcall was brushed aside at both tables and the slam was reached via the Key-Card enquiry of 4NT. The five spade reply at both tables promised two Key-Cards and the queen of hearts.

After West discarded a spade on the third diamond, declarer had that hand counted as an original 6:1:2:4 shape. So, after he cashed the king of clubs he led a low club towards dummy. When West followed with the six of clubs declarer covered it with dummy’s nine with complete confidence that it would win the trick. So, declarer had his contract when, as expected, East discarded a diamond.

Of course it would not have helped if West had played one of his honours on the second round of clubs. Declarer would win the trick in dummy, then return to his hand with a trump to take the proven finesse against West’s remaining club honour.

Finally, if West followed to the three diamonds then he could have at most three clubs and so declarer would play the ace and queen of clubs next. Then if clubs were 3-2 (or West proved to have begun with a singleton jack or ten of clubs) the suit would play for four tricks and the contract would come home.

Asmir Dear Asmir For the benefit of you and your friends who seem to be struggling to understand I am going to answer this again but I will do it in much simpler words just in the hope that something, anything, might get in. Here we go. Are you ready? As my grade 2 teacher used to say: “Get your thinking cap on”: Israel abandoned the Gaza strip in 2005. It is now 2024. Hamas has ruled the Gaza strip since 2006. It is now 2024. Hamas is in control of the Gaza strip. Hamas

is holding hostages. Hamas is in control of its own civilians. Those civilians live under the rule of the Hamas government in the Gaza strip. Those civilians are Hamas’s responsibility. It is a war crime to put your civilians in front of military targets. It is a war crime to shield your rockets with children. It is a war crime to hold hostages. It is a war crime to put hostages in a war zone to try to prevent bombing. All of these are war crimes.

Every ounce of blood that is spilled; every building that is blown up; every disaster you see in Gaza is on Hamas. It really is that simple. There is no duality about this.

As for the United Nations – is that the same people as the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency)? They’re the ones who pay salaries for abusers of women? The same ones who ensure that murderers get paid? Aren’t they the ones who create new civilian sites to cover terrorists, perpetuate a never-ending ‘refugee’ status, incite a new generation to hate and take funding from real refugees?

There’s a reason the world has stopped funding them. The secrets of liars will always come out and truth will ultimately prevail. You’re on the wrong side of history Asmir.

Create a space for open and honest communication. Choose quiet times when you can both dedicate energy to discuss your feelings without distractions.

Encourage your spouse to share their feelings as well. Active listening is crucial during this exchange; try to understand each other’s perspectives without judgment. This creates a foundation for empathy and mutual understanding.

IV’E GOT THE SYNAGOGUE BLUES Dear Rabbi I’ve hit a spiritual snooze button at my synagogue – the prayers are a dirge, and the rabbi’s sermons could double as bedtime stories. Should I trade my yarmulke for a pillow and call it a day, or is there a way to spice up this spiritual siesta?

Ah, the yawn-inducing symphony of snores and prayers! Firstly, let’s address the dirge-like prayers. What if we turn them into a musical extravaganza?

Imagine a jazzed-up rendition of “Adon Olam” with a choir of heavenly voices – or, at the very least, the guy with the impressive falsetto in the third row behind you. Who says prayers can’t have a rhythm section?

As for the rabbi’s sermons, think of them as a potential cure for insomnia or an unexpected audition for the world’s most soothing podcast. Instead of counting sheep, try counting the number of times the rabbi says “um” during a sermon. Spoiler alert: It’s probably more than you’d expect.

If all else fails, consider bringing in some audience participation. What if every time the rabbi says something sleep-inducing, you perform a discreet interpretative dance in your seat? Not only will it keep you awake, but you might also inspire a congregation-wide dance revolution.

And finally, if the spiritual siesta persists, perhaps it’s time to introduce a “Most Boring Sermon” competition. Encourage your fellow congregants to rate the sermons on a scale of “Fell Asleep” to “Fell into a Coma.” Who knows, the rabbi might appreciate the feedback and start spicing things up with a few knock-knock jokes.

Consider this an invitation to turn your synagogue experience into a spiritual variety show. With a dash of creativity, a sprinkle of humour, and maybe a caffeinated Kiddush, you’ll transform those yawns into yelps of excitement. Who said spirituality can’t be entertaining? Keep those eyelids wide open, and may your next synagogue visit be an unforgettable spiritual stand-up comedy night!

Sacred Letters from Heaven

When people leave this world, we mourn their passing and grieve for the loss. When people die tragically and suddenly, we are left wondering how they died, and in what state of mind they left our world. The uncertainty is extremely painful. If we only knew how they died and what their final thoughts were, we would receive some degree of solace and comfort. Unfortunately, in most instances we are left with a silent void.

During our current war, we have received some degree of solace by hearing voices of fallen soldiers speaking to us from heaven. Numerous letters were written by soldiers, to be read in the tragic event that they fell in battle. These heartbreaking voices from heroes who left us tell us much about our world, our culture and our value system, while reminding us about everything that is right and honorable about our people.

Throughout history we sacrificed our lives on behalf of our faith, but we rarely had opportunity to pen our thoughts.

Sadly, in many instances Jews were murdered suddenly, caught in violent pogroms or rapidly herded to their death, leaving no time to record thoughts. Even when we had the time to ponder our fate, we rarely captured our thoughts in writing. Now that we have achieved Jewish sovereignty and the privilege of a Jewish army, for the first time, we are privy to the innermost thoughts of Jewish heroes as they face the prospect of dying on behalf of our people and our land.

For the families, these final thoughts provide solace, for the rest of us they provide inspiration. What do these letters say about our soldiers and about our society?

CELEBRATING LIFE Firstly, the letters celebrate life rather than glorifying death. They were written with uncommon poise and remarkable composure, given the real risk of death.

The soldiers encourage their families to applaud their lives rather than sink into despair.

Fallen soldier Ben Zusman z”l wrote “even if something occurs I don’t allow you to sink into despondency. I had the privilege to fulfill my dream ..and rest assured I am looking down on you from heaven with a broad

smile.”

Unlike other religions, Judaism doesn’t pursue martyrdom and Jews don’t have a collective death wish. We do designate several cardinal values such as faith and commitment to Jewish history as more important than our personal lives. This perspective fills us with meaning, purpose, and nobility. If these larger values are, however, more important than our own narrow experience we must be prepared to die for those values, if necessary.

Otherwise, we don’t fully live for them.

While we aspire to life, and hope to live long lives based upon our values, we are prepared to die if the situation demands it. Jewish martyrdom doesn’t worship death but ennobles life.

This balance between celebrating life but being prepared for death is our collective legacy. In the last moments before his brutal execution, the legendary martyr, Rebbi Akiva registered his own his chilling, but fearless thoughts about martyrdom: “All my life I agonized about this possibility [of martyrdom] and now that the moment is upon me, I will not flinch”. Though Rabbi Akiva never chased martyrdom, he did actively wonder about it. Every committed Jew is haunted by the persistent question “will I be challenged to pay the ultimate price for my beliefs”.

For centuries, we defiantly surrendered our lives to defend the presence of G-d in a nightmarishly dark world. Without that selfless commitment our faith would never have survived. Jews are always prepared, never glorifying death, but always upholding our values, if necessary, by defending them to the death. We were always prepared. Our soldiers were also prepared. Their letters aren’t of death, but voices of life and its deeper meanings.

THE HISTORICAL MOMENT Secondly, many of the letters acknowledge the magnitude of this historical moment. They are aware that we battle on behalf of Jewish history and moral spirit.

One of the ten martyrs, Rebbi Chanaya ben Tradyon, was wrapped in a sefer Torah, while being burned alive. As he was dying, he confidently remarked to his daughter that his fate was now interlaced with Torah’s fate.

This reassured him that his death wasn’t purposeless

and would, one day, be avenged. Being wrapped in a sefer Torah, signaled that his death was a small part of a larger narrative.

Fallen soldier Rabbi Elkanah Weisel z’l expressed similar historical vision when he wrote “We are a redeemed generation, and we are composing the most dramatic moments of Jewish history”.

The exquisite letters exude a lofty transcendence, recognizing that the war and their tragic deaths are a small part of a larger and more eternal historical narrative.

About 8 years ago I went to console Chanah Henkin, a pioneer of women’s Torah education, whose son and daughter-inlaw were killed in a terror attack. She inquired of the visitors the number of books in Tanach and received the correct answer, of 24. Chanah corrected her: “there is a 25th book and it describes the return of the Jewish people to their homeland in the face of hostile opposition. My children, who were killed, are in that book”. The letters remind us that we are all part of the 25th book. Future generations will tell our story. That story will include the stunning letters of our fallen soldiers.

LIVING IN TWO WORLDS None of the letters, even those written by religious soldiers, metions the afterlife. Judaism envisions a delicate union between this world and the next. We build our spiritual identity in this world and maintain spiritual experience in the next world without the obstacles which this world poses. We build Heaven on Earth and take it with us when we die.

Viewing afterlife as a “result” rather than a “reward” fastens us to this world. These letters, composed by people on their way to the next world, are still firmly grounded in this world.

fire which will now consume our bodies is the very same fire which will give rise to the rebirth of the Jewish people.” He didn’t mention the splendor of the afterlife, but how their death would impact this world. In their letters, our soldiers expressed great pride in defending our country and eradicating horrific evil from this world.

SELFLESS LETTERS Finally, the letters are extremely unselfish, providing comfort for the families who may ultimately face crushing loss.

The letters remind me of the midrash’s description of Yitzchak’s final conversation with his father, as he was bound on the altar, facing his own sacrifice.

Yitzchak expresses concern for his elderly parents, who will no longer have a child to help them navigate old age. Additionally, as he is worried that the tragic news of his death will break his mother’s heart, he instructs his father to deliver the news gently while his mother isn’t in danger’s way. Chillingly, the soldiers explicitly forbid any prisoner exchange, should they be taken hostage. Well aware of the horrific treatment of hostages, the soldiers put the welfare of the country above their own welfare.

These are sacred letters of life, historical consciousness, and selflessness. May the memory of the heroic authors be a merit for our people and may we make them proud.

Weekly Dvar Torah FROM ERETZ YISRAEL

Timely Teshuvah

Am Yisrael continue their journey from Egypt through the Sinai desert. The Torah tells us that they left Refidim and came to Har Sinai (Shemot 19:2). Yet we already know the Jews were coming from Refidim. As we are aware, nothing is repetitive in Torah, what information is being added here? Rashi explains that just as Bnei Yisrael approached the area of Har Sinai in a state of teshuvah, likewise, when leaving Refidim the people were engaged in teshuvah. Rashi’s explanation leaves us a bit perplexed. If they already did teshuvah when leaving Refidim, why did they need to do teshuvah once again when coming to Har Sinai? Further, why is teshuvah at this juncture so crucial?

The Netziv in his commentary HaAmek Davar, explains that preparation is

1st Aliya (Kohen) – Shemot 18:1-12

Yitro, Moshe’s father-in-law and a Midianite priest, hears about the miraculous Exodus from Egypt. He comes to meet Moshe in the desert, together with his daughter Tziporah (Moshe’s wife) and Moshe’s two sons. Moshe greets Yitro and relates to him what has happened to the Israelites. Yitro and Moshe bring offerings.

2nd Aliya (Levi) – 18:13-23

According to Rashi’s commentary, the narrative now skips forward to an incident after the giving of the Torah.

Moshe is busy making halachic rulings from morning to evening. Concerned that this is too much for Moshe, Yitro advises

Rav Weissblum in He’arat Derech, notes that before doing any mitzvah, one should ask two important questions; first, “what am I about to do?” Second, “For whom am I about to do this?” These questions enable us to achieve the proper mindset and allow the mitzvah to be truly experienced, not simply be a series of meaningless motions. To the extent one prepares, one connects more deeply and fully.

It is said in the name of the Gra that if the members of a shul would be careful to focus their intentions in preparing the materials for the building and concentrate completely on the holy task of building the shul, then all the tefillot said in that shul would have perfect kavanah.

The Gra notes that it is for this reason that many Tana’im and Amora’im would learn and teach outdoors under trees. They knew they could not ensure that the

3rd Aliya (Shlishi) – 18:24-27

Moshe accepts Yitro’s advice and appoints judges over sub-groups of 1000, 100, 50 and 10 people. Yitro returns to Midian.

4th Aliya (Revi’i) – 19:1-6

The narrative switches back to Rosh Chodesh Sivan, one and a half months after the Exodus, prior to the giving of the Torah. The people travel from Refidim and arrive in the Sinai Desert. Moshe ascends Mount Sinai. G-d tells Moshe to inform the people that if they listen to His voice and keep His covenant, they will become “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”.

5th Aliya (Chamishi) – 19:7-19:19

The people agree to G-d’s offer. G-d tells Moshe to instruct the people to wash

their clothing, refrain from marital relations (Rashi) and not to approach the mountain for the next three days. Moshe relays this to the nation. G-d’s Presence descends onto the mountain; there is thunder, lightning and shofar blasts; the mountain is covered in smoke.

6th Aliya (Shishi) – 19:20-20:14

G-d ‘descends’ upon Mount Sinai and Moshe ascends again. G-d once again tells Moshe to warn the people not to approach the mountain. After Moshe descends, G-d speaks the Ten Commandments: 1. Faith in G-d’s existence 2. Prohibition of idol worship 3. Prohibition of taking G-d’s Name in vain 4. Remembering Shabbat to keep it holy

The core element of teshuvah is being mindful and focused. Am Yisrael understood that to access the realm of kedushah they must immerse themselves in preparation. Teshuvah is not a one-time affair, we must be in a constant state of working and improving ourselves. Is it any wonder we have the beracha of teshuvah in our davening 3 times daily?

This is the key to a life of kedushah; an awareness that this is the type of life we live.

Trembling from this awesome experience, the people retreat and ask Moshe to be a go-between, instead of G-d speaking to them directly, lest they die. Moshe reassures them. G-d tells Moshe to warn the nation not to carve certain images (see Rashi). The commandment is given to build a designated altar upon which offerings to G-d should be brought.

Haftarah

The prophet Yeshaya sees a vision of the heavenly court, occupied by G-d and His angels. Whilst the angels assure Yeshaya that he is personally free of sin, G-d tells him to warn the people of their eventual exile, due to their stubbornness and iniquities. The evil king Achaz ascends the throne; he will be shown Divine mercy in order to save his righteous son, the future king Chizkiyahu.

The Power of the Journey

No one knew what to do. The homeless man had charged straight through the lobby of a major office building in New York City, immune to the protests and questions of the well-dressed staff and security guards. “Excuse me, you can’t go in there,” protested the secretary, but to no avail. He stomped right past her, entered the elevator, and rode straight up to the penthouse, where he met the CEO’s private secretary. “Do you have an appointment? You can’t just barge in here like that,” she said with a distinct edge of alarm. But before she could finish her sentence, he stomped past her as well.

Bursting into the CEO’s office, the homeless man sat down opposite the CEO, put his feet up on the desk, and smiled. “Hi Dad,” he said. “How are you doing?”

“Son, I’ve told you a thousand times, you are not welcome here. You are an embarrassment and a disgrace. Look at yourself! When was the last time you showered; when was the last time you ate a meal? All you do is hurt yourself and waste away your life. I gave you every opportunity in life, I opened every door for you, and gave you everything you could possibly want. But you’ve thrown it all away, and now look at you. You are a failure and a disgrace.”

The homeless man nodded, as if he had heard this speech hundreds of times.

“You’re one to talk, Dad. You might have made it big in finance, but where were you for your family? Where were you during my childhood when I needed you most? You missed my birthdays, school events, and celebrations. I can’t remember the last time you showed up to anything that wasn’t a business meeting!

You’re so caught up in being ‘successful’ that you have no idea what life is actually about. How much of life have you experienced? What has all your money, success, and fame brought you other than stress and worry? I may not have made anything of myself, but at least I know how to enjoy life! At least I know how to live in the now, to enjoy what I’m doing.

Can you say the same?”

This argument is rehashed year after year. CEO and homeless son, success and failure. But which is the success, and which is the failure? Some think the CEO is right, while others relate to the son’s emotional plea. Many think they’re both wrong. A few think they’re both right. But maybe they’re both wrong and they’re both right.

A LONG JOURNEY The Torah is not only a guide to living a life of truth within the physical world; it is also the literal blueprint and DNA of

this physical world. Our physical world is a projection and emanation of the deep spiritual reality described by the Torah.

This is the meaning of the Midrash, “Istakel b’Oraisa u’bara alma — [Hashem] looked into the Torah and used it to create the world” (Bereishis Rabbah 1:1).

The physical world is an emanation and expression of Torah, the spiritual root of existence. As such, every single word of Torah is of infinite importance.

The Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Teshuvah 3:8), in line with this idea, explains that if one rejects a single letter of the Torah, it is as if he has rejected the entire Torah. The Ramban explains in the introduction to his commentary on Bereishis that the entire Torah is one elongated shem Hashem (name of G-d) — one interconnected sefer, a single organic entity.

Just as a single missing chromosome can affect an entire human being, the same is true for a Sefer Torah. Even a single missing letter renders the entire text pasul (invalid).

Every single word and letter in the Torah is absolutely fundamental.

If this is true, the Torah’s detailed description of Klal Yisrael’s journey through the midbar is puzzling. At the very end of Sefer Bamidbar (at the beginning of Parshas Masei), the Torah uses forty-nine pesukim to list, one by one, the various places that the Jewish People passed through along their journey in the midbar. In the majority of these places, nothing of note occurred; the Jewish People simply passed through. Why is it necessary to mention every single place, every single stage of our journey? There are several deep themes related to these encampments, from which we can learn inspiring and profound ideas. While each theme will be developed separately, they also interconnect into a greater whole.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EVERY STEP Although we often focus on the end result, every single step of a process is of critical importance.

If we truly understood the power of

this idea, our view of time and potential would forever change. Consider, for example, a single day of your life. Your day begins with infinite spiritual potential with 86,400 seconds to utilize. At the very beginning of every day, you have the ability to learn new ideas, improve your relationships, and achieve any number of accomplishments. After one thousand seconds of your day have passed, whatever you accomplished of that time — of that potential — is real, and the rest is lost. However, the potential for the remaining 85,400 seconds is shaped by how you spent the first thousand seconds. Every thought, word, action, and decision have infinite, cosmic reverberations and repercussions. This may be overwhelming to consider, and it may be unhealthy to continuously fixate upon the severity of each infinitesimal aspect of our lives, but the truth remains nonetheless. We should therefore contemplate this, as this realization will help awaken us to the importance of everything, something truly crucial to recognize. Every single step in our journey creates ripples throughout every aspect of our lives. This is an example of true oneness, and this is the importance of every step. We can now begin to appreciate why the Torah includes every single step of Klal Yisrael’s journey.

So many people hate the journey of growth because they want nothing more than to be at the destination. The journey of growth is only enjoyable when you learn to enjoy the journey itself. On the 6th (some say the 7th) of Sivan, Hashem Himself opens Matan Torah (which was accompanied by thunder and lightning) by saying the first two of the Ten Commandments.

Moshe continues with the following eight

commandments and it must have been a most wonderful feeling to be part of the nation chosen by Hashem to receive His Torah! We got such special Mitzvot on that day, all 613 in fact were hinted at, but the ones said specifically included keeping Shabbat, honouring parents, not being jealous of our friends and believing in

Hashem.

We have held on to the Torah for some 3500 years!

Or, to say it correctly, the Torah has supported the Jewish People (and influenced people all over the world)!
