We can support Israel and work to end the occupation NEW ISRAEL FUND AUSTRALIA The New Israel Fund (NIF) Australia hosted the successful Melbourne and Sydney book launches of Kingdom of Olives and Ash: Writers Confront the Occupation last month.

In total, almost 800 attended NIF events launching the book, including in Sydney at Paddington Town Hall with Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks, award winning Israeli author Assaf Gavron and Executive Director of Breaking the Silence Avner Gvaryahu. In Melbourne the event at Memo Music Hall sold out with over 250 attending to hear Gavron and Gvaryahu.

As a Diaspora Jew Brooks acknowledged the complex feelings Jews have about Israel. “I think Jews in the Diaspora have to balance a reluctance to respond with the responsibility to address it,” she told the Sydney audience, admitting that many of her Jewish friends preferred not to attend this sort of discussion.

“Traditionally, Jews have been offered two options: support the Israeli government and Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, or the alternative from the BDS movement, which says that in order to oppose the occupation you also have to oppose Israel. We’re strengthening the voices of moderation that say it is possible to

support Israel, while also opposing the very real issues created by occupation, both for Palestinians and Israelis,” said NIF Australia executive director Liam Getreu.

Kingdom of Olives and Ash, put together

by Jewish-American authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, along with Breaking the Silence, included essays from 26 Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian and global authors, with each writer focusing on a different story that highlighted Israel’s 51-year occupation of the Palestinian

Territories.

The events, moderated by Deb Whitmont, also provided a platform for Gvaryahu to discuss his work at Breaking the Silence, an organisation of current and former IDF soldiers who give testimonies in order to educate the Israeli public about the effect of the occupation.

Gvaryahu, a former IDF sergeant and paratrooper, argued that the solution lay not in amending the rules of conduct for the IDF soldiers but in ending the ongoing military control.

Many members of the audience welcomed the opportunity to have an open conversation about what is happening in Israel, rather than ignoring the current reality for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

“It was incredible to see so many like minded people from all walks of life come together at the NIF event with Breaking the Silence to talk about the realities of what’s happening on the ground in Israel,” said Netzer youth leader Mikaela Webb about the Melbourne event. More than 100 leaders from the Zionist youth movements and AUJS attended the events in Sydney and Melbourne.

The events in Melbourne and Sydney also offered a chance for the Jewish community to fund important work in Israel that change the reality on the ground for Palestinians and Israelis, including projects that promote healthcare, education and legal support.

“This entire week has been an opportunity for the community to learn more about what is happening in Israel and the Occupied Territories. We are glad to have been able to offer such engaging evenings with top quality speakers and allow people to learn more about the need to end the occupation,” said NIF Australia Executive Director Liam Getreu.

GABRIELLE UPTON VAUCLUSE MP Vaucluse MP Gabrielle Upton today welcomed the 2018-19 NSW Budget as strongly delivering for the local community.

“This is a great budget for my community and it will make it even easier to keep Vaucluse moving,” Ms Upton said.

“It’s a win for residents of all ages with pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and our seniors who use community transport all gaining from the NSW Budget.”

“I am especially thrilled to have secured $1,000,000 for a new shared path and cycleway on New South Head Road from Norwich Road, Rose Bay to William Street, Double Bay and $150,000 for an upgraded cycleway link along Bay Street, Double Bay,” Ms Upton said.

“I am also really pleased to help deliver funding for safer pedestrian crossings for the school community at Bellevue Hill Public School with $122,000 for upgraded and new pedestrian refuges on Birriga Road and Victoria Road, Bellevue Hill. It is really important to keep our students safe on this busy road.

“The NSW Budget also confirms work is continuing on the $9.2 million upgrade of Edgecliff Station with site work now beginning. There is also $215,000 to support the new traffic-busting clearway on New South Head Road from Waratah

Street, Rushcutters Bay to Bay Street, Double Bay.” Some other Budget highlights for the Vaucluse Electorate include:

Advocate Speakers Represent Four Major Human Rights Issues in Australia in Dynamic Panel Discussion SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM On 14 June 2018, the Sydney Jewish Museum’s Public Program Committee hosted an engaging and dynamic panel of speakers, which explored four major human rights issues facing Australia today; the rights of Indigenous people, refugees and asylum seekers, people with disabilities and the LGBTIQ community. These issues are highlighted in the Museum’s recentlylaunched exhibition, The Holocaust and Human Rights.

Engaging an audience of 160 attendees from the legal field, activist groups, NGOs and the community, were speakers Deng Adut (refugee, defence lawyer and refugee advocate), Brandon Srot (psychotherapist, and sexuality and gender diversity trainer), Professor Lindon Coombes (Indigenous Chair for NSW Reconciliation Council), and Rani Vincent (co-founder of The Age of Ability and The Brain Injury Project). National Director of Amnesty International Australia, Claire Mallinson, delivered a compelling and erudite opening address to launch the evening, which drew upon her incredible, intimate field research and insights into current human rights issues occurring worldwide. In the face of rising incidences of

crimes against humanity and hate speech, Claire expressed her optimism for the future of human rights. She said, “In the face of what can often seem like it’s hopeless, and there’s huge despair, it’s up to all of us to do something. No matter how small that might be, we can all do something.”

With diverse representation on the panel, the speakers and moderator Emeritus Professor Andrew Jakubowicz delved into complex, challenging and timely questions, some of which were fielded from audience

members prior to the event. The line of discussion that ensued raised pertinent, emotive and empowering responses from the representative speakers. The panellists discussed their perspectives on the greatest needs of their respective sectors, both in terms of legal framework and public response, as well as the biggest impediments to success of the human rights within their fields of work and advocacy. The consensus amongst the speakers was that to move forward, we need to consciously

re-frame the way we think and talk about people and groups who are outside of our own circles. “It is the dignity of the human being that is the most important thing”, Deng emphasised.

The Sydney Jewish Museum is proud to have launched a forward-looking and universally engaging program to complement its new permanent exhibition The Holocaust and Human Rights. A capstone to the Museum’s major, worldclass Holocaust exhibition, this new, significant section of the Museum uses new technologies and approaches to explore local human rights issues, and is one of the first permanent human rights exhibitions to open in a museum in Australia.

The recent reception of ‘Highly Commended’ for The Holocaust and Human Rights exhibition in the 2018 Museums and Galleries National Awards affirms the efforts taken in the research, design and execution of the new exhibition.

The Sydney Jewish Museum will continue to bolster its educational and public programming surrounding the topic of human rights, to deliver contemporary, relevant and thoroughly interesting content to students, members of the public and new audiences.

Top Israeli Human Rights Lawyer Gadi Ezra Brings Order to UIA NSW Events UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL Israeli human rights lawyer, Gadi Ezra addressed over 500 guests across a series of events in Sydney hosted by UIA NSW in June 2018.

These events included a Mentor Lunch, Legal Lunch, North Shore briefing, presentations at Kehilat Kadimah and Emanuel Synagogue; and various private events.

Ezra holds an unparalleled perspective on war – as a human rights lawyer and soldier in the Special Forces. He is currently advising the defence establishment on strategic matters, while pursuing his PhD in Law. Selected by Forbes Magazine’s ‘30 under 30’ most influential leaders in Israel, Ezra already holds three law degrees, specialising in public law and human rights.

He headed the Laws of War desk at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advising diplomats on humanitarian law, the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, human rights and sanctions regimes.

Drawing from his personal experience and his strong academic and practical background as a human rights lawyer, he examines the complexities of applying the law in warfare in actual combat. Using first-

hand experiences, he illustrates modern challenges, difficulties faced and the IDF’s high standards.

During his visit, he touched on these issues, amongst others including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, human rights, his childhood spent in Kiryat Gat (a region where one of Keren Hayesod-UIA’s absorption centres is located) and the support needed for the vulnerable populations living on Israel’s periphery.

“It was a true honour to engage with the wonderful Jewish community of Sydney. The interactions I was privileged to experience were insightful. I’m thankful for UIA for providing me with this unique platform, and hope I was able to shed light on complex issues,” Ezra said.

“In a unique way, Gadi was able to give us rare insight into the life and death scenarios facing IDF soldiers in dense urban combat every day. His clear, rational outlook enabled us all to understand the lengths the IDF goes to, in excess of what the law requires, to protect human life. Yet again, the UIA has connected our community to Israel through an incredibly impressive young man,“ UIA CEO Yair Miller OAM said.

Sydney Chevra Kadisha Launches Building Appeal SYDNEY CHEVRA KADISHA

In addition, there is a requirement to allow for new infrastructure at the new burial

For the first time in over 70 years, the Chevra Kadisha is launching a building appeal to upgrade its Woollahra facilities and allow for Sydney’s burial needs and for our future generations.

When the Chevra was first built on its current site in the early 1950’s, Sydney’s Jewish population numbered around 12,000. Today our community is around 4 times that number and is expected to double within the next 50 years.

This has put enormous pressure on the facilities. There is a lack of seating capacity in the chapel, with around a quarter of all funerals having to mourners standing in the street. The Tahara area on occasions lacks capacity and needs a significant upgrade to meet modern standards.

Security represents a major problem at the site, as mourners mill in significant numbers on Oxford Street after each funeral. Finally, the community is facing a crisis due to the lack of burial spaces, with Rookwood reaching capacity in 10 years and Macquarie Park in 5 years.

“Seventy five years ago, the then Chevra Board took a bold decision to dramatically expand its facility by moving to the present Woollahra site.

Now it is our turn to step up and upgrade and expand the current dated facilities, not only for today’s community, but for generations to come” said Dr Mendel Monk, President of the Chevra.

As such, the Chevra has received

Helping Terror Victims Cope through The Power of Together “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy,” goes the famous show tune. But that sentiment doesn’t ring so true for many residents of Israel’s southern region who suffered the brunt of Israel’s three wars with Hamas.

And resumption of rockets from Gaza has been a bitter reminder of those days and the fear and panic they brought.

The tension had already been building.

Six homes in Sderot were damaged by gunfire in March. Some more buildings and cars were hit by bullets in May. Then more than 100 rockets and mortars rained down from Gaza, setting off early warning alarms all day and throughout the night.

That wasn’t the last of the rockets. Bursts of fire continue, sometimes with dozens of rockets coming in a short span of time.

Katy, who was injured in a rocket attack in 2014, said everyone in Sderot relives the experience every time the early warning siren sounds. “The children were born into trauma,” she said. “Each day, they ask ‘will there be an alarm today?’ That’s how it’s been, and that’s how it will be in the future in Sderot,” she added.

Residents of the south are not alone.

“Thousands of terror victims across the country relive some of their traumatic experience when they hear about other terrorist attacks,” said OneFamily CEO Chantal Belzberg.

“Virtually all terror victims are suffering

from post-traumatic stress on some level,” she added.

Extended clearways on the way for Old South Head Road GABRIELLE UPTON Member for Vaucluse Gabrielle Upton today announced that motorists will benefit from a faster journey along Old South Head Road, with a proposal for extended clearways between Curlewis Street, Bondi and Syd Enfield Drive, Bondi Junction.

Ms Upton said “Introducing extended clearways on this busy section of Old South Head Road will reduce traffic congestion and work with the new clearway on New South Head Road to get people to work and home sooner.”

“A single parked car can choke traffic flow and cause major delays during busy times so it is important to make all lanes available to speed up the journey for everyone.”

“The extended clearways would operate in both directions from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on weekends”, Ms Upton said.

The clearways currently operate eastbound between 3pm to 7pm during weekdays and westbound between 6am to 10am during weekdays.

Roads and Maritime Services investigated parking along Old South Head Road and is working with the community to identify alternate business customer parking close to the businesses near Flood Lane.

The preferred option is the installation of new timed parking on Flood Lane between Barnett Lane and Old South Head Road, Flood Street between Barnett

Lane and Old South Head Road and Flood Street south of Orr Street, subject to council approval.

“Members of the community have also raised concerns about the existing ‘left turn only (buses excepted)’ lane from Old South Head Road to Flood Street”, Ms Upton said.

“To address this, Roads and Maritime Services is proposing to convert the existing ‘left turn only (buses excepted)’ into a shared left turn and through lane.”

“This will allow all motorists to use both lanes on Old South Head Road to travel through the intersection towards Bondi Junction.”

“Combined with the new clearway hours, which will remove parked vehicles from the kerbside lane, this will significantly improve travel time for all road users.”

The clearways project team will be available to discuss the project at Oxford Street Mall, Bondi Junction on Thursday 12 July 2018 from 4pm to 7pm.

The key, according to Ms. Belzberg, is a method the organization calls “The Power of Together.”

“For terror victims, so much of their lives are spent trying to pretend they are normal so that they can fit in with other people,” Ms. Belzberg explained. “But inside, they are full of turmoil. They might need to cry all of a sudden for no apparent reason, and people around them don’t know how to respond.

So the victims hold it in so they could fit in with the regular world. Of course, they pay a price emotionally.

“But when they get together with others who have suffered the same way and understand what they are going through, the masks can drop. That’s when the gates of healing open. That’s when they can be themselves and truly process their trauma.”

OneFamily has major retreats scheduled throughout the summer. A support group for bereaved fathers experienced a day of nature therapy; the division of orphans of both parents has a three-day healing experience; widows and their children have special programs; and the Youth Division for bereaved children will hold a weeklong overnight camp for 300 children who have all lost a parent or a sibling.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg at One Family. Virtually each day, one group is busy putting the Power of Together into practice. It’s made a huge difference for those who suffer from trauma.

“Here we can have some inner peace, away from our routine,” one terror survivor said. “You’re around people who understand you and care about you.

Is Trump good for the Jews?

It is action, not character, that is the most important.

SHMULEY BOTEACH Last week I debated my good friend Bret Stephens of The New York Times on the question of President Donald Trump and the Jews.

Stephens, one of the finest men I know in journalism and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, has been very critical of Trump, beginning during the campaign when he was at The Wall Street Journal. A frequent guest at our Shabbat table with his family, I had suggested to Stephens that we bring our fascinating discussions about the president to a public audience.

Stephens feels – and I can’t do full justice to his criticisms, which are far better expressed in his own words – that Trump has sent dog whistles that have fostered racism and even antisemitism; that he has behaved and continues to behave in a manner that is corrosive to the presidency; and that his policies on immigration are antithetical to American values of welcoming immigrants.

Having been born in Mexico City, Stephens is especially passionate about his opposition to Trump’s wall and what he sees is demonization of Mexican immigrants, who come to America for economic opportunity and have no terrorist history.

There can be no question that the Jewish people must be extremely sensitive on immigration and always be strong and vocal advocates for rescuing those in harm’s way. I am reading a new book titled Rescue Board about the War Refugee Board and how it was set up in 1944 largely as a response – by moral men in the Treasury Department, led by Henry Morgenthau – to the antisemitic policies of Breckinridge Long, who headed the State Department’s visa division and kept so many Jews out of America who died in Hitler’s ovens.

Immigration deserves an entirely separate column, which I look forward to writing, God willing.

I told Stephens that on Israel Trump has exceeded all our expectations. Prior to Trump and Nikki Haley, the UN’s principal purpose, it seemed, was to use Israel as a punching bag for global prejudices and

biases against the Jewish state. No president before Trump stopped it. But this one has.

And it has led to global repercussions, with nations now thinking twice before they unfairly slam Israel for fabricated human rights abuses, lest they fall afoul of the most powerful nation on earth.

On Jerusalem, every US president since Bill Clinton promised to move the embassy, including a phenomenal friend of Israel named George W. Bush. None kept his word, save for Trump. And the move is not merely symbolic. The heart and soul of the Jewish people is tied to Jerusalem, and recognition of Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish people is a de facto recognition of the history and national claims of our people.

On Iran, President Barack Obama negotiated with a regime even while it called for the annihilation of the Jewish people throughout the negotiations. It may seem incredible that the leader of the free world could legitimize a government that openly incites genocide against the Jewish people just 70 years after the Holocaust.

But Obama went beyond negotiations and rewarded that government with $150 billion, with which they sewed further murder and mayhem across the Middle East. With one stroke of a pen, Trump ended the dishonor of the Iran deal and made it clear that nations threatening the incineration of Israel will not be rewarded but punished.

The same is true of Trump’s defense of Israel in the wake of the Gaza riots – which I witnessed with my own eyes from about half a mile from the border fence – where Trump and Haley again had Israel’s back at the UN while the rest of the world condemned Israel for stopping terrorists from entering its domain and murdering its farmers and residents.

None of this even begins to address other undertakings by Trump toward the Jewish community, such as the pardoning of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, who six former attorneys-general, both Republican and Democrat, said had endured remarkably unjust sentencing.

To be sure, there have been failures as well. Trump should have spoken out strongly and clearly against the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville last summer – not because neo-Nazis are in any way, in our time, as great a threat as Islamic terrorism is to Israel and the Jewish people, but, rather, in deference to the memory of the six million and to make morally clear that Nazis are the incarnation of evil and are the most wretched and vile people on earth.

But none of this negates how Trump has ushered in a new era where the United States stands squarely with Israel before the eyes of the world.

And what about character? I addressed the issue from a Jewish and biblical values perspective.

Unlike Christianity, which gives us Jesus Christ, a perfect man-god, a divine being, as an example by which to live and to emulate, there is not a single perfect person in the Hebrew Bible. From Abraham, who messes up with Ishmael, to Isaac, who raises an Esau, to Jacob, who favors Joseph, to Moses, who smites rather than speaks to the rock, to David and Bathsheba, our Bible is filled with great but flawed men and women, none of whom is perfect.

The reason? Whereas Christianity defines righteousness by perfection, Judaism defines righteousness through struggle.

The special man or woman is he or she who battles their own nature to do good.

In addition, whereas Christianity puts personal salvation – the question of whether you’re going to heaven – as its highest ideal, Judaism puts world redemption – the question of how much you have contributed to the community – before personal perfection. The main question in Judaism is not, Are you personally pious or righteous? but, rather, Have you left the world in better shape than how you found it?

That’s why Judaism has always extolled the virtue of those who contribute to the public good, even if they are of flawed character. Hama’aseh hu ha’ikar, it is action, not character, that is the most important.

This does not mean that character is

unimportant. To the contrary, Judaism demands constantly that we strive for moral refinement and ethical excellence.

Rather, it means that personal character is subordinate to tikun olam, world improvement.

Harry Truman, we now know, expressed incredibly painful antisemitic comments in his personal diaries, calling Jews the cruelest people he had ever met. Yet he recognized the State of Israel within 12 minutes of David Ben-Gurion’s declaration of statehood, and that is what counts – his actions rather than his personal sentiments.

Richard Nixon’s recorded conversations are littered with antisemitic remarks. But when Israel was fighting for its very survival during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, he ordered the rearmament of Israel and helped to save the country from destruction.

With Trump, there is no such suggestion that he is in any way personally antisemitic, and the very suggestion would be ludicrous.

He supported a beloved daughter’s conversion to Judaism, has three Orthodox and observant Jewish grandchildren, who attend Jewish day school, and has populated his administration with some of the most pro-Israel public officials in modern history, such as Jason Greenblatt, David Friedman, Nikki Haley, Mike Pompeo, Steve Mnuchin, and John Bolton.

Our president may be an imperfect man, and his Twitter feed can at times be incendiary.

But on the question of whether he has advanced the credibility and security of Israel, has shown that he is an ally who has Israel’s back, and is prepared to stand with the Jewish people in world forums and incessant crisis, the answer must be a resounding yes.

Democratic Socialist who upset NY Rep. Joe Crowley said Israel committed a ‘massacre’ in Gaza JNS A Democratic Socialist who upset Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in a primary on Tuesday night had previously said that Israel had committed a “massacre” in the Gaza Strip.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, who soundly defeated Crowley as part of a party primary for New York’s 14th congressional district, which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, which supports the BDS movement.

In a May 14 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez said Israel’s killing of Palestinians along the Gaza border was a “massacre,” and that “no state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters.”

“There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else,” she said. “Democrats can’t be silent about this anymore.” Some 60 Palestinians were killed in “March of Return” protests orchestrated by the Palestinian terror group Hamas on May 14, which is also the secular date of Israel’s Independence Day. Hamas leaders later said that at least

50 of those killed were members of the terror group.

The primary victory of Ocasio-Cortez over Crowley—the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives, who many viewed as vying for a top leadership position in the next year—may represent a broader shift in the Democratic Party towards the more progressive wing championed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is also a Socialist and has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in recent months.

In a statement, the Jewish Democratic Council of America, while congratulating Ocasio-Cortez on her victory, said it disagreed with her stance on Israel.

“We disagree with her past statement regarding Israel, as well as her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America, which supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions [BDS] movement targeting Israel.

In the coming days and months, we hope to learn more about Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s views, but at the moment, her position on Israel is not in line with our values.”

Jared Kushner has it all wrong on the Palestinians JNS STEPHEN M. FLATOW There’s a certain contempt that’s implicit in presuming to enlighten other people as to what they should care about and what is in their best interests.

We don’t yet know the details of the Israeli-Palestinian peace plan that presidential adviser Jared Kushner is preparing. But we do know how Kushner perceives the Palestinian Arabs. And he’s got them all wrong.

The White House has released an official transcript of Kushner’s June 24 interview with the Palestinian Arab newspaper Al Quds. It shows that Kushner subscribes to the oldest myth of the conflict—that average Palestinians are really just like us.

Here’s how he put it: “I believe that Palestinian people are less invested in the politicians’ talking points than they are in seeing how a deal will give them and their future generations new opportunities, more and better paying jobs and prospects for a better life.”

It’s often hard for Americans to grasp the fact that the values and concerns of the Palestinian Arabs are, in fact, radically different from those of America, Israel and the West. Average Palestinian Arabs really do want to destroy Israel. They really do hate Jews. The political culture of their society is not the same as the democratic political culture of the United States or Israel. Better-paying jobs are not their

highest goal.

You can blame their attitude on the Palestinian Authority’s educational system. You can blame it on decades of anti-Jewish propaganda on the P.A.’s television and radio programs, and in its newspapers and books. You can blame it on centuries of inculcation in the values of Islam and extreme Arab nationalism. But however you apportion the blame, it’s a fact.

In the interview, Kushner pleaded with Palestinian readers: “Don’t allow your grandfather’s conflict to determine your children’s future.” That’s how Americans think. But that’s not how Palestinians think. Americans put their grandfathers’ conflicts behind them. Palestinians consider their grandfathers’ agenda to be their own agenda.

“My dream,” Kushner told Al Quds, “is for the Israeli and Palestinian people to be the closest of allies in combating terror, economic achievement, advancements in science and technology, and in sharing a lifestyle of brotherhood, peace and prosperity.” Yes, that’s Kushner’s dream.

Mine, too. But that’s not the Palestinians’ dream. They are not interested in joining Israel in “combating terror” because they are the ones who perpetrate, glorify and financially reward terror.

There’s a certain contempt implicit in presuming to enlighten other people as to what they should care about and what is in their best interests. “These people

know their lives will only be improved by working out the issues and moving on,” said Kushner. Wrong again. He’s the one who is interested in “moving on.” Not the Palestinians.

“The Palestinian people are industrious, well-educated and adjacent to the Silicon Valley of the Middle East—Israel,” Kushner continued. “Israel’s prosperity would spill over very quickly to the Palestinians if there is peace.”

Does he think the Palestinians don’t know that? Does he think that they are simpletons who have never noticed, throughout the past century, how Jewish development of the country has benefited them and could benefit them a lot more if they made peace?

Of course, they have noticed. But they have chosen to do otherwise. When Israel expelled all Jews from Gaza, they left behind fully intact greenhouses for the Palestinians to use and enjoy. And enjoy them they did. They enjoyed burning them down.

Wait, that doesn’t make any sense! If the main concern of the Palestinians is economic prosperity, why would they burn down the hothouses that would give them economic prosperity? Because they care more about hating Jews than improving their own lives.

Which is why I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I read Kushner’s statement that “the people of Gaza are hostages to bad leadership. … It’s time

for the Palestinian Authority and Hamas to stop using the people of Gaza as pawns.”

They’re not hostages, and they’re not pawns. They freely elected Hamas in a democratic election. They have chosen to march—by the thousands and tens of thousands—to the Gaza fence to throw Molotov cocktails at Israelis and sail flaming kites to burn down their fields.

Nobody forced them to go there. Nobody forced them to do that.

“So yes, there is a lot of hatred and a lot of scar tissue,” Kushner concluded, “but I do not underestimate humankind’s ability to love.” He doesn’t underestimate it. He overestimates it. Offering the Palestinian Arabs better-paying jobs will not transform them from warmongers to peacemakers.

It would take a complete overhaul of the P.A.’s media and school system, followed by generations of enlightened leadership and education, to change their values and attitudes.

If Jared Kushner’s dangerously naive belief about the Palestinians’ “ability to love” is shaping the Trump Mideast peace plan, then friends of Israel have reason to be deeply concerned.

Descendants of Rachel Cohen praised William’s forebear, the Duke of Edinburgh’s mother, after she selflessly protected Mrs Cohen in her home – even using her deafness to foil Nazi search.

The duke privately met Evy and Philippe Cohen, the granddaughter and greatgrandson of Mrs Cohen, and was told by Mr Cohen: “We all owe our existence to the courage of Princess Alice.”

Speaking after chatting with the duke, in the Jerusalem residence of Israel’s prime minister, Mr Cohen said: “It was extremely moving. It allowed us to tell a really difficult but beautiful part of the family history.

“Prince William was very proud to know that his great-grandmother had saved our whole family. He seemed to know the story very well, and asked us questions regarding our family and how it happened.”

Stephen Covey’s The Leader in Me® program, which introduces students to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is part of our Leading Learning educational package and strongly supports this aim.

In the Junior School, The Leader in Me® program provides us with a common language and key tools to guide our students to be self-motivated and directed, as well as equipping them with organisation and planning, relationship- building and teamwork skills.

Through this program we aim to develop our students’ confidence and have each child recognise the leader within themselves.

These habits are further enforced through our weekly PDH (Personal Development and Health) lessons,

An Australian-first for Business-savvy Students MORIAH COLLEGE Two Year 12 students from Moriah College have been selected to launch the first entrepreneurship program of its kind in Australia.

Eighteen-year-old twin brothers Zac and Jake Wein are on a mission to prove that you’re never too young to start your own business. In fact, as well as sitting their HSC exams this year, Zac and Jake have been selected to launch Australia’s first ever LaunchX Club in association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at their high school, Moriah College.

LaunchX is an American organisation that provides entrepreneurial high school students with real-world business experience by supporting and assisting them in creating their own start-up companies in just six months. Now, thirty forward-thinking individuals in Years 9-12 at Moriah College will be selected to make up five teams that will design, develop and build their own fullyfunctioning businesses, and the boys say that applications from innovative and ambitious teens for the sought-after spots are already flooding in.

Why LaunchX? ‘Last year, Zac and I were applying to different colleges in America to see if we could do a summer course there for two

weeks. One of the applications was to MIT, but we didn’t get accepted because we didn’t have a lot of entrepreneurial experience,’ says Jake. ‘They then invited us to be Launch Club presidents of a program called MIT LaunchX,’ adds Zac. ‘We were blown away and applied and got accepted last year, but the timetabling was run on an American schedule so we weren’t sure we could commit to it. ‘We decided to wait a year and apply again, going through the school and making sure we could do it all properly. ‘Jake and I have already spoken to investors and we’ve got a lot of interest from people who want to come in and help.

We’ve also got the Moriah Foundation on board, which we’re really appreciative of for their help with the initial costs of the program. ​ ‘LaunchX provides us with a course structure to go through and certain requirements and objectives to meet each week so that our teams can stay on target and grow their businesses in the right way.’ ‘We’ve had a few hundred students express their interest in the program and it’s only going to continue to grow over the next few years,’ says Jake. ‘The great thing is that age is not an issue,’ Zac continues. ‘It’s about your passion for entrepreneurship and whether you think you can take on the responsibility and have the right skills to succeed.’Â

KTC Art Fair Wows Crowd KESSER TORAH COLLEGE KTC put on an incredible display of talent in their Art Fair last week, with artworks selling for over $1200. Students and teachers from the Early Learning Centres through to High School worked tirelessly for weeks to create masterpeices that were showcased on the evening.

The magnificient class artworks were auctioned off by Joseph Raskin for a total amount of $6000. The atmosphere in the room was palpable as parents fiercely bid against each other to take home the beautiful creations. The Art Fair has been a learning experience for the students as they developed artistic skills while learning the 7 basic elements of Art - line, colour, proportion, space, value, form and texture.

UIA Honours the Late Vivian Lasse UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL

Vivian Lasse was born in Sydney in 1939.

With a lifelong passion for Israel, in 2006 Vivian had the foresight to create a generous Endowment Fund through UIA NSW’s Women’s Division - an ‘Or L’Atid Lion of Judah’, helping ensure the State of Israel’s future in perpetuity.

Vivian was UIA’s first International ‘Or L’Atid’ in honour of her late parents, Yehuda and Chai, guaranteeing their memories would live on with Kaddish recited on Shavout in their honour every year at the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem.

Throughout Vivian’s life, she was also a major donor to the UIA where she generously supported Israel and its People’s everyday needs.

Sadly, Vivian passed away last year. Her memory will live on through the generous Bequest she left in her Will to Israel through the UIA. Her Bequest will support a number of key UIA projects in Israel including: rehabilitation grants for children through

the Keren Hayesod Fund for Victims of Terror, Net@ Technological Youth Movement in Israel’s Southern Region; and supporting professional and vocational training for new immigrants through two absorption centres.

UIA NSW honoured Vivian at its 2018 Campaign Launch and all Women’s Division Campaign events. She was celebrated as a remarkable woman who contributed enormously to UIA’s most valuable asset, the People of Israel.

Capturing the wisdom of the older generation at Montefiore MONTEFIORE Photographer Nadine Saacks is a familiar face around the Sydney community as she captures those special moments at weddings and social events. Last week, it was Nadine’s turn to share the spotlight as Montefiore Randwick held a launch in honour of her book The Tapestry of Life, a passion project capturing portraits and words of wisdom from more than 50 residents.

“I have such admiration for older people, especially those who lived through the War,” says the longtime friend and supporter of Montefiore, who credits this attitude to growing up living with her grandmothers.

“I wanted to photograph the residents in their rooms with something meaningful and special to them.”

At the launch, residents and their families were invited to view their portraits and quotes displayed in the foyer at Montefiore.

The antique, old-world style Nadine brings to the images in the book reflects the elegance and dignity of her subjects and captures their individuality. “Each has so much wisdom and humour, and the time to share their remarkable stories,” she adds, saying she especially treasured the moments spent with those residents who have since passed on.

Unsurprisingly for the always-smiling photographer, Nadine’s favourite quote featured in the book comes from Joyce

Edelman, who says: “Be positive and look at the good side of life not the bad. Two men look through bars – one sees mud, and the other sees stars.”

Nadine is already spending time with residents at Montefiore Woollahra working on the next volume, with Hunters Hill to follow.

Many people have the mistake that Jewish institutions should only be investing in the youth of today. Don’t get me wrong, of course that’s important. Our youth are the future of tomorrow. But It would be wrong to disregard the spiritual development of our seniors.

This is because of two reasons: 1) Our Judaism is a means to itself.

Doing a mitzva is in it of itself priceless.

Even if someone has one day left to live, every good deed that they do, every word of Torah learnt brings down a G-dly light into this world that will last forever.

In other words, Torah is not just for the youth as a preparation for how to live their lives when they grow up, rather Torah is life itself. If we are living, we should be spiritually growing.

2) People have greater wisdom as they grow older. The Torah teaches us that we need to stand for an elderly person. The very fact that they are old itself is a reason to respect them. That is because they have a deeper outlook and perspective on life. I have found that when teaching our seniors, I, the teacher gains tremendously from their wise counsel and advice. In other words, it would do young people a great service to teach older people who perhaps know less than they do but are infinitely wiser then they are.

At my work at BINA (a centre dedicated to Adult education of all ages) I have the privilege to teach two classes for seniors a week. One on Wednesday afternoon the other on Thursday morning. It is definitely one of the highlights of my week and please G-d they will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Ageing Gracefully GROUP HOMES AUSTRALIA TAMAR KREBS Ageing may be inevitable, but that doesn’t seem to make it any the more palatable for the vast majority of Western civilisation.

We fight it every step of the way using a variety of methods, ranging from the more sedate actions of hiding our date of birth on Facebook and investing in expensive creams that claim to erase our wrinkles (sorry, should I call them laughter lines?), through to the more invasive procedures of injectables, fillers and facelifts. There is, however, another way. It may sound crazy, and is most definitely contentious, but how about embracing ageing and accepting it as an welcomed part of your life cycle?

We plan furiously for so many elements of our lives – holidays, our children’s schooling, careers, home improvements, even superannuation. But the vast majority of us spend more time planning what to have for dinner than we do planning for what we will do as we age beyond that magic goal of retirement.

When you have spent your superannuation lump sum on a couple of cruises, spoiling your grandchildren and golf memberships, what will you do when you are no longer able to make it to the 18th hole or pick up your grandchildren from day care? The subject may be taboo, but planning for this stage of your life is just as important as planning for retirement. Maybe you assume you will die in your sleep or that you will be so old that you won’t care. Having worked with thousands of individuals at this stage of life over the last 20 years, I can assure you, you will care.

A recent UCLA study found that a diet high in fructose slows your brain, hampering learning and memory. Instead chomp your way through a diet consisting of wholefoods, plenty of fruit and vegetables. Wholegrains, nuts, oily fish, blueberries, tomatoes, eggs, healthy fats such as olive oil and avocado, sage, broccoli, pumpkin seeds have all been found to boost brain health and memory.

There has been recent research to suggest that a Mediterranean Diet can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s, so role play your way to Greece and grill some sardines on the BBQ. Exercise your inner designer Hoarding is officially bad for your ageing health. As you clutter your environment, you are creating more obstacles to navigate and potential hazards that might cause you to trip.

Try and hang your favourite rug on the wall as

opposed to displaying it on the floor, or look at implanting soft flooring within your floorboards so that there are no exposed edges.

Research shows that the number one place where there is a risk of falling is the bathroom. This is where you get in and out of the bath or shower, amongst a variety of tiled and slippery surfaces. These falls often lead to hip fractures and head injuries. Help to prevent potential falls by installing hand rails, hobless showers and slip resistant flooring. You might even want to consider an emergency call bell system.

Lighting is an interior designer’s favourite friend and it should also be yours. However, relying solely on the romantic dim glow of a wall light will not be practical as you grow older. As you age, your eyesight will deteriorate and you will need better lighting to be able to navigate your home. You will need to ensure that you have particularly good lighting on the stairs.

Try and review all aspects of your home environment to ensure that they will enable, rather than disable you, as you grow older.

Having the last word Ageing is both inevitable and normal.

Embrace ageing, celebrate the wisdom you have acquired, the friends you have made and the lessons you have learned. Plan for ageing with enthusiasm and this will enable you to make the most out of your final years, without being a burden to your family. Plan now and the decisions for how you live your final years will be yours, not the result of some last minute crisis-driven decision made by your family.

Rehabilitation services for older people at Wolper Jewish Hospital WOLPER JEWISH HOSPITAL Wolper Jewish Hospital’s Medical Ward provides restorative care for patients with complex medical needs. The rehabilitation service for older people is operated by specialist physicians supported by a multidisciplinary team including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nursing staff, exercise physiologists, pharmacist, speech pathologist, dietitian, social worker and a discharge planner.

Patients will be admitted under one of the Hospital’s specialist physicians.

Patients attend therapy 6 days per week. From Monday to Friday, patients attend 2 treatment sessions daily being physiotherapy and/or hydrotherapy.

On Saturdays, patients attend 1 physiotherapy session.

Good Oral Hygiene for all Ages BONDI DENTISTS RIVA HAYMAN As we age, disease, general wear-and-tear and even medication can compromise our dental health.

To ensure proper oral health, the principles of correct oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental visits are critical. I’ve included below some important tips that are crucial for maintaining good oral health.

• BRUSHING AND FLOSSING Brushing two to three times a day and cleaning properly between our teeth (including flossing) are critical to keeping healthy teeth and gums. To help achieve enhanced oral hygiene I strongly recommend my patients use a mix of electric

toothbrushes; floss; accredited toothpaste; and interdental brushes and electronic interdental devices. It is important to look out for toothpaste which has added fluoride for extra protection.

You should ask your dentist what oral hygiene tools are suited to your particular needs.

• THE IMPORTANCE OF SALIVA Good quality saliva is one of the best natural protectors of our teeth. It physically washes away debris, has good antibacterial action and buffers those acids which cause tooth decay. Good quality saliva production can be compromised by insufficient water intake; medications; poor functioning salivary glands and even diet.

• A healthy diet to maintain healthy saliva Alcohol intake and caffeine can cause fluid loss which can result in a dry mouth and limit the amount of saliva we generate.

No Homework, No Tests, Know Judaism Melton Delivers Again in 2018 THE FLORENCE MELTON SCHOOL OF ADULT JEWISH LEARNING HILARY MAY BLACK ”Melton” is the byword for sophisticated and engaging adult Jewish Education.

Offering University style learning, without the homework and assessment, The Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning in Sydney is part of an international network which shares the scholarly expertise of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem with adult students throughout the world. Melton courses are now provided through the University of Sydney Centre of Continuing Education and we have an exciting programme planned for Semester 2, 2018.

2018 began with a ”bang” with Dr. Avril Alba leading students through a fascinating course examining the role of memory and history in the Jewish tradition. This was the first time Melton has offered a four-week program. The beauty of such a short course is the convenience and, of course, it leaves everyone wanting more!

In Semester 1, 2018 we also offered two ten-week programs. The newest Melton course, ”The Star and The Crescent: The Long Relationship of Judaism and Islam”, taught by Prof. Suzanne Rutland OAM, was a huge success. One student who has taken over ten courses with the Centre for Continuing Education remarked that this course was the best she has ever attended.

We are looking forward to offering it again in 2019 at Cremorne Synagogue.

Our other Semester 1 course was ”The Holocaust as Reflected in Memoirs and Diaries”. Students found the material powerful and stirring and appreciated the opportunity to have intense and meaningful discussions. First time Melton teacher, Dr. Lynne Swarts facilitated discussion with aplomb.

Our Semester 2 classes start on 10 July with another four-week course ”Modern Living: Maintaining Balance” in Rose Bay. Talya Wiseman, a much-loved teacher at Moriah College, will guide students through a variety of Jewish texts and source material offering practical tips for achieving ”balance” in modern life. This highly interactive course offers an exciting and insightful form of Jewish learning whilst providing real skills to help you enjoy your life (more!).

We’re delighted to be offering another new course starting 28 July - ”Bereshit 1: From Adam to Abraham” at the Jewish Board of Education, Bondi. This ten week course, examining the Book of Genesis and taught by Tracey Sareff, is a first for Sydney.

The Melton Biblical curriculum ”Shiv’im Panim” is popular throughout the world and we are excited to be offering it for the first time in Sydney.

Beginning on 3 October we will once again be offering the much admired ”Beyond Borders: The History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict” course. Critically acclaimed for the nuanced understanding it brings to this complex subject matter, the course material encourages discussion and debate, and equips students to better understand the continuing conflict as it unfolds. Our newest Melton teacher, Oren Thaler, an outstanding Emanuel School teacher will lead the course at ”Hamoadon”, The Jewish Folk Centre in Woollahra on Wednesdays evenings for 10 weeks.

Mark, born in Odessa, Ukraine migrated to Australia in 1978 and developed a successful

confectionary distribution business. After a life changing accident Mark was left with major problems with his mobility; several operations failed and Mark was left with a crippling condition that kept him at home requiring constant care and support from his wife. Within several years Mark has developed a progressive cognitive and memory decline.

With encouragement and support from one of the Social Workers at Jewish

Care, whom had been supporting Mark and his wife, Mark started attending the Burger Centre in February 2018. At first he was not keen to leave his home and reluctantly agreed to come once a week. A new tailored walker and a hoisted bus provided by the Randwick Waverley Community Transport (RWCT) conveyed a seamless transition for Mark.

Within one month Mark increased his attendance to three times per week. Once a week he attends a Russian –speaking program and twice per week a program for English-speaking clients. “I like people who work at the centre as they are kind, patient and attentive. I like coming here as I can engage with other people and I enjoy it, it allows me to soicalise, to forget about myself and most of all to challenge my mind”-, says Mark.

Susan, Mark’s wife echoes her husband’s words:” Mark is getting engaged with activities and other people at the Burger Centre and it gives me very needed respite to have some rest and assurance that he is well looked after and enjoying life again.

Hashem created us in His own image. It is a mitzvah to love oneself and take care of all aspects of ourselves; including physical wellbeing, appearance, hygiene, nutrition, social connection and mental health.

As we grow older this becomes more difficult to fulfil. We need to fight the very natural temptation of overlooking our own needs to focus on the needs of family and friends. All through life, no matter what age we are, we need love and care, we seek the human comfort of peers to talk to and spend time with, and our health relies on good nutrition and staying active.

It does us a great disservice to neglect our own needs, and means we can and will decline more quickly, and be less able to support those others we care about.

COA was founded on a philosophy of helping people to live an independent life with minimal support services provided on

Which sleep training technique is best for your child?

THE SLEEP COACH CHERYL FINGLESON One of the first things I’ll tell you as a gentle sleep consultant, is ‘sleep is a learnt skill’. Depending on temperament, some babies learn easily, and some need a little help, just like most things.

When I create a sleep solution, I want your child to fall asleep calmly and independently and without tears.

There are a few different techniques, and when you start asking around, you might find that it’s hard to know which one you feel comfortable with.

They are not all the same, and understanding the differences can be confusing - especially if you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in a while. I have listed four of the most common techniques.

Having a set bedtime routine and staying consistent is key in achieving your goal. Each family is different and once you’re sleep training your child, pick a routine that you believe will work for your baby and your family, and stick to it.

Cry it out, Controlled crying, Pick up put down and Sleep Shuffle - What does it mean?

Cry It Out (CIO) This ‘tough love’ philosophy of sleep training was very popular in previous generations when it was thought that a child would be ‘spoilt’ if they were comforted. Cry It Out was borne out of a fear that comforting your child to sleep would result in disrupted sleep habits that would result in the child being unable to sleep alone. We now know that there is no such thing as ‘spoiling your baby’.

Getting comfort from their carers is essential in creating a strong and secure attachment, and it will in fact make your baby more confident, knowing that you’re there to guide and support them through any challenges.

The Cry It Out technique means that the baby is left on their own even if they start to cry, and this supposedly teaches the baby to self-settle and soothe so they don’t rely on a carer to respond to their cries in a certain way.

In my experience, this method is very stressful for both parents and babies, and I can assure you that babies don’t wake up at night to cause trouble.

They cry because they need a feed, comfort or even pain relief. After all, crying is the main form of communication for babies. They don’t have any other way to tell us how they feel! Ensuring them that you will be there if they need you, is essential for your child’s healthy development.

Controlled Crying This technique is also known as ‘Ferberizing’ after the American doctor Dr Richard Ferber. The method suggests that you let your child cry for a period of time, while checking in and comforting them at intervals after they have been put down for their nap or night-time sleep. The time between comforting and leaving them alone is gradually increased, usually in minute-long stages.

Theoretically, the child learns to self-soothe while instilling the reassurance of knowing their carer will come in frequently to check on them.

Often parents - and children - find the process stressful and upsetting, and this method could potentially teach the child to cry more, as when you return, your child treats your presence as a

reward.

Parents who chose a more gentle approach might have to spend longer working at it to see results, but find the process far less upsetting than other, harsher methods.

The Gentle Soothing Way (Pick up put down) This is a pick-up-put-down method, which can be good when babies want and need full physical contact when they’re upset. This involves following a set bedtime routine, then putting your baby down in their cot or basket when they are dozy but not asleep. If the child cries, pick them up, reassure them quietly and firmly by saying ‘night night, sleep time now’, then soothing and shuh-ing until they stop crying and then putting them back down. If they cry again, you repeat the process until the child settles.

Some babies prefer stroking or being patted when they need comfort while trying to get to sleep. That might also be a better approach for older, heavier babies as it’s less stress on your back.

Sleep Shuffle (No-Cry Solution) As a gentle paediatric sleep consultant I find this technique to be very successful and the lest stressful.

Also known as the ‘gradual retreat method’, this works best when you’ve already established a regular bedtime routine with your child but want them to sleep independently - and without tears.

Here’s how it works: Choose a place where you can sit beside your baby’s cot at bedtime. When you put your baby down, you reassure them by saying ‘night, night, sleep time now’ and then you sit down next to them. If they start to cry, pat them, shush or make soothing sounds to help them settle. Stay in your position until your child is asleep, don’t try and sneak out before. Over two or three days, you move your position further away from the cot, until you are able to leave the room and let your child go to sleep without you there.

This technique works well with babies who are used to being held or nursed to sleep as it can be done in a very gradual and gentle manner.

The first stage can even be cuddling your baby in their cot, the second stage patting or resting your hand on their back, the third, sitting very close to the cot and then moving slowly away over a few nights. This is a very gentle technique where your baby learns to self-settle without causing any separation anxiety.

Naturally, your baby is unique and you know your baby best, so have the confidence to adapt your bedtime routine to work for you, and it will help your feel secure while you sleep train and for the future. The sooner you get started the sooner you all sleep!

2018 Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship Awarded

MACCABI AUSTRALIA

The winner of the 2018 Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship is cyclist Riley Hart.

2017 was a challenging year for Riley with a persistent knee injury and VCE. Regardless, he has achieved some excellent results over the last year, with the following highlights; • Gold medal and under-19 Australian record at the 2017 Australian National Track Championships in Brisbane in the 4000m Team Pursuit.

• A win in the second Australian Junior Road World’s qualifying event, the Mersey Valley Tour.

Riley scorched home in the stage one individual time trial to win from a stacked field of Australia and NZ’s top under-19 junior cyclists.

• Competing in the Elite category for the first time at the Victorian State Championships. His two rides in the individual pursuit, along with his qualifying ride gave him direct qualification to represent Victoria at 2018 Track Nationals. His ride of 4.29.234 was the fastest at states for over a decade.

• First Elite Gold Medal at 2018 Track National Championships in February as a member of the Victorian Team Pursuit. Victoria’s time of 3 minutes and 58.829 seconds secured Hart and his team a place in a select group of athletes who have ridden a sub-four-minute team pursuit.

Riley continues to focus on elite competition with the intention to compete in June/July 2018 in Europe. The scholarship will contribute to funding travel and accommodation for this 8-week stint of racing.

The Maccabi Australia Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship was established in 2015 to assist emerging athletes on the path to achieving at an elite level.

Previous Winners include: 2015 Lara Kaplan – Tennis Ranked 3rd in NSW and 10th in Australia, and this year earned an International Tennis Federation world ranking.

2016 Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva – Rhythmic Gymnastics Double Bronze Medalist for Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games 2017 Marc Fridman – Snooker Victorian U18 Champion 2018 (second year running) Rudi’s nephew Sonny Roth continues to represent the Roth Family on the Maccabi Australia Selection Committee for the Rudi Roth Sports Scholarship Award. This year the Selection Committee has been impressed with the calibre of nominees and made their decision based not only on sporting achievement, but also where they felt that the scholarship would have the greatest impact.

Sonny, spoke of Rudi’s wish in establishing this award to genuinely assist an athlete on their journey to become elite. Sonney is “certain that Riley will continue to achieve in his sport of Cycling. We wish Riley the best of luck in perusing the next stage of his sporting career in Europe.”

Maccabi Australia is honoured to be able to present the 2018 scholarship to Riley and is extremely grateful to Rudi Roth and his family for making the award possible. Rudi had a long and wonderful history with Maccabi assisting emerging athletes on the path to achieving at an elite level. Originally born in in Poland, Rudi came to Australia in 1933 as a toddler. Having overcome Rickets at age 12, Rudi had an illustrious squash career internationally and in NSW and Victoria.

Maccabi Australia 2018 Nachum Buch Scholorship Announcements MACCABI AUSTRALIA Maccabi Australia (MAI) is proud to announce the winners of the 2018 Nachum Buch Scholarships.

In its inaugural year, the Maccabi Australia Nachum Buch Scholarship recognises swimmers with the aim of assisting them on the path to achieving at the elite level.

There are 2 worthy winners of the 2018 Nachum Buch Swimming Scholarship Matt Levy and Benno Negri.

MATT LEVY Matt has been representing Australia as a swimmer since 2003, swimming career highlights include: • Member of the Dolphins Team competing in the 2017 IPC World Swimming Championships, Mexico • Won a bronze medal in the 200m Freestyle at the 2016 Paralympic Games • Represented Australia at the 2013 and 2015 IPC World Championships • Won gold as a member of the 4X100m Freestyle relay team at the 2010 IPC World Championships and again at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

• Winning a gold medal and breaking a world record for the 200 freestyle in the S7 category at the 2017 Maccabiah Games • Winning a Gold Medal for the 50 S7 Freestyle at the recent 2018 Commonwealth Games He balances his swimming career whilst working at Westpac as a project manager.

Matt claims that representing Australia and Maccabi at the 2017 Maccabiah Games was one of the greatest honors in my 17-year sporting career and he is grateful for the experience it brought.

As one of the inaugural winners of the Nachum Buch Swimming Scholarship, Matt will use the funds to support his swimming career during 2018.

BENNO NEGRI Benno began competing at 9 years old as a junior competitor for Bialik College.

As a junior swimmer, he has won several National Age Awards including 2014 National Champion for the 200 Backstroke. A highlight of his swimming career has been donning “the green and gold” to represent on the Australian Junior Team and winning a silver medal at the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Games.

Benno has won many Swimming Victoria Championships at both the Age and Open level. Recently he competed in the 2017 Mare Nostrum Swimming Series in Europe and at the Swimming Australia Selection Trials for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He has just travelled to Singapore representing Swimming Victoria where he won a Gold Medal in 4 by 100 Medley Relay and a Silver Medal in the 4 by 100 Freestyle Relay. He will be competing

at another 2 Australian selection trials in 2018 – the Pan Pacific Swimming Trials (for selection to the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo August 2018) and the Swimming Australia National Short Course Championships (for selection to the FINA Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou December 2018)Currently studying parttime (Engineering/Science at Monash University) and training fulltime, he is focused on his long-term ambition to Medal at a Swimming Australia Open event and to be a member of the Australian Dolphins team.

A worthy recipient of the inaugural Nachum Buch Swimming Scholarship, Benno will be using the funds to assist with travel and allied health expenses.

The Nachum Buch Maccabi Australia Scholarship Fund has been established with the foresight and generosity of Nachum and his family to help those

athletes with a dream in aquatic sports.

It provides a yearly grant of up to $2000 to athletes to assist them on the path to achieving at an elite level.

Each year the grant will be made to the individual or individuals who best fit the scholarship selection criteria and is deemed the most deserving by the selection panel.

Funding can be used to pay for such legitimate items as travel to tournaments, coaching expenses, registration or nomination fees and the like.

Nachum wishes the inaugural recipients of the scholarship, Matt and Benno “every success at 2018 swimming competitions and in their future swimming careers”.
