Habits of Great CEOs Workplace Leadership

A

CEO, or Chief Executive Officer, is the highest-ranking

employee

in

an

organization. He or she is responsible for the success and progress of the business, making top-level leadership decisions, and are the ultimate authority in making final decisions.

CEOs of top companies today earn in millions of dollars and also wield enormous influence in the 10

industry they operate. But the job of a CEO is not easy as they are always walking on thin ice because of the public exposure they have nowadays. This means they can not only lose their job in hours but also ruin the company irreparably due to the decisions they take or statements they make. Merely having a great salary and enormous power is not sufficient.

They must know how to use that power to ensure the success of their company and enhance its reputation. This article outlines a bunch of qualities successful CEOs have.

They Hire a Great Team – A qualified and competent team is an absolute must for every CEO. Having a great team does not mean having a bunch of yes men or women. The members must guide the CEO to make correct decisions 11

and not simply agree to everything he says.

Secondly, a good CEO must not become upset if his team does not agree with his ideas or views.

They Delegate Tasks – Having the topmost decision power doesn’t mean the CEO must do all the tasks himself. Great CEOs know how and when to delegate. Otherwise, they will be stuck in administrative activities and won’t have time to do strategic tasks. For example, Douglas Ivester was a qualified finance executive in CocoCola. He worked as a CFO and COO for many years and was eventually promoted to CEO. But within a short time, he had to resign as he eroded the confidence of the Board of Directors.

To the outside world, Ivester was the perfect CEO candidate. But he had one major flaw. He was unable to delegate effectively and make the leap 12

from his past CFO/COO jobs to a CEO job. Even when he was a CEO he got excessively involved in day-to-day operations, which was his specialty and necessary in his previous roles. But practicing that method over even when he became a CEO proved to be a major burden in his new position.

He was unable or unwilling to free himself from day-to-day operations and concentrate on the strategic and visionary activities required for a CEO. In summary, he was unable and unwilling to delegate and that finally resulted in his quitting.

This is why CEOs must learn to delegate and keep their hands off from routine hands-on activities even if they are tempted to do them.

They Read a Lot - Successful CEOs are avid readers and consume a variety of genres like autobiographies,

improvement, etc. The right books can give plenty of innovative ideas to CEOS and also prevent them from making mistakes that others did in their companies. Good CEOs also make notes while reading to ponder over them later.

Some CEOs share their book reading list with the public like how Bill Gates often does.

They Attend Every Meeting – Great CEOs make time to meet as many employees as possible to listen to ideas and grievances. This will give them information on ground realities rather than just get the info from colorful status reports or sugarcoated reports from their direct reports. For example, a famous CEO of a Japanese car company actually spent a few weeks working in the manufacturing assembly to know the various issues faced by his employees.

This not only gave him practical knowledge to improve various things but also earned the respect of his employees.

They Network a Lot - Successful CEOs network with a lot of industry peers and consultants. This helps them know what is going in the industry, competition, and also help them enhance their career prospects. They are always on the prowl for new talent and smart people they can add to their team.

They Stay Healthy - The CEO’s physical and mental health is very important for every company. They cannot afford to take their health lightly as sickness can impact decisions, anger management,

and

business

activities.

Maintaining good health will also reduce the high 15

stress that is inevitable in their jobs.

They Communicate Facts – This is very important to quell fears and rumors from destroying the company. Even if the company is in trouble good CEOs will communicate that to their employees and ask for suggestions on solving

They Talk Less – Successful CEOs control their tongue and don’t blabber non-stop. This is very important to ensure that they don’t accidentally say something awkward that can put the company in trouble.

They Convert Problems to Challenges – They refuse to see problems as problems but as challenges that must be tackled and solved. They don’t rest until the problem is overcome and does not disrupt the business.

They Exhibit Courage and Motivate – Successful CEOs motivate their employees and control their own panic. They will always present a calm and confident picture even when faced with enormous difficulties. This is a very important skill to stop the company from going down the drain and media and stock going 18

They Make Time for Themselves – Great CEOs also spend time alone by taking long walks, relaxing, meditating, and reflecting on the past and future. For example, Steve Jobs used to take long walks alone to get ideas for his leadership.

ong ago someone invented a silly slogan called – The Customer is Always Right. And

idealistic management gurus have been using this ridiculous slogan to teach employees to tolerate all types of cranky behavior from customers. However, it’s time to call a spade a 21

spade. There is no such thing as the customer is always right. In fact, most customers don’t really have the knowledge to know what is right or possible for a particular product or service.

Secondly, whatever they demand will rarely be affordable by them. As Steve Jobs once said, “Some people say - Give the customers what they want - But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they are going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I had asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me - A faster horse!" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.” Now let us look at customers from an objective angle and not get carried away by slogans. The first thing 22

every product or service provider needs to learn is to recognize their toxic customers and how to deal with them.

Toxic clients are real and an unfortunate reality in every business. Some customers are so rude and toxic that you may feel they need a tight slap but that is not possible today. You must maintain your professionalism regardless of the customer’s behavior. Here are some ways to deal with toxic customers.

Boundaries – Arguments and fights happen because you (service provider) did not set correct boundaries before you started the project. If you have promised the moon then customers will expect the moon. This is why you should be clear on what you will and won’t do for the costs that 23

you are proposing. One of the most common headaches is the project creep issue. Customers will continuously ask for a bunch of small modifications or enhancements. And you will agree to do them without extra costs. Soon this will become the norm and they will start demanding more and more, which will cost time and money.

Set boundaries with your client with a detailed project brief in writing and don’t be afraid to tell what you will not be able to do without charging more. This establishes the necessary evidence in case your client keeps demanding additional unpaid work. For example, if you are a freelance writer and your client orders three articles of 1000 words each. That means three articles of 1000 words each. You should also set how many 24

revisions you will allow. This is why sites like Fiverr set the number of revisions you will allow per project.

Don’t Be Afraid to Say No – Many freelancers, particularly newer ones, are afraid to say no because they think they will lose the client. But saying yes to everything the customer asks will cost you more than you realize. Sometimes it’s better to say no very early in the discussion if you feel the customer is demanding too much. There are plenty of shady customers who will try to fleece you. For example, I charge about 500 dollars to publish a book for writers. But I have had cases where customers expect me to do the same job for 100 or 200 hundred dollars because they think that is the right price for it. The act of saying no can save you a lot of problems and 25

professionally communicate to the client that you’re not going to get on your knees just to retain them.

Timelines – Another troublesome client is the disorganized clients who don’t keep up their promises. These clients are toxic because they prevent you from ruining your schedule. For example, a disorganized will send materials late, give incomplete instructions, won’t respond to emails and chats for hours and days, etc. Such clients can stop you from accepting new orders because you are waiting to complete this disorganized customer’s work. In such cases you will have to send two polite reminders that their work will now get done after your new customer’s work is completed.

know it all clients. These clients will tell you how to do your job even if they have no knowledge of what it takes. In such cases, you will have to put a stop right there. Remember they approached you because they don’t have the time or knowledge to do something. But if they start giving advice on how the job should be done then perhaps it is better they do it themselves.

However, in some cases, you will have to let them burn their hand by following the instruction they give just to teach them a lesson to know their limitations. For example, one particular customer wanted me to format their book with various types of fancy fonts and was not willing to listen to my industry-standard advice on how books should be formatted. Later, when the book got uploaded it got rejected by the publisher because it was a messy and choppy reading experience.

The Never Satisfied Customer – This is another type of troublesome customer who will keep changing their mind every few hours. They are not satisfied with anything and will keep asking for changes in price or features. The only way to deal with such clients is to have a paper 29

trail and charge them extra for every change they demand. Remember, such clients will monopolize your time without any monetary benefit.

Personal Attacks – Sometimes you will get customers who will start using foul language or yell at you. It’s rare but such customers do exist.

But you should not revert with anger or foul language. Unless you have no choice it’s better to quietly get rid of such customers.

Fire Them - Sometimes you have to fire a client. Yes, it is necessary because they are not worth it. Do this in a professional and polite way by saying that this is not working out and you would like to terminate the project. But remember, you probably won’t get paid after saying this. So, don’t do this if you have got a big outstanding invoice. Wait until they have paid 30

you. Then detach slowly.

tenure, he has handled some of the worst communal riots, organized crime and other forms of violence with extraordinary success.

During his charge, he was subject to excessive 33

political and other interdepartmental pressures but nobody could budge him. When he became the police commissioner of a tough city, many felt he would not last more than a few months due to the intense pressures of the underworld and political compulsions. But, he was there to stay, and could not be shaken for more than three years.

Crooked politicians and shady businessmen would often put pressure on him to have their choice of police officers posted in their localities so that they could go scot-free in their crimes.

But Mr. JV always had one simple technique to handle such questionable requests. He would calmly ask them to give a written request along with their signatures, explaining why they need specific police officers into their localities.

Naturally, no one was willing to give their intentions in writing. So their black intentions would not succeed.

This technique of getting things in writing can be very effectively used in our workplace also.

Though it seems so ordinary this technique has proved to be very successful in protecting hundreds of employees from hostile workplace situations. One of the biggest reasons why troubles erupt in workplaces is due to verbal communication. Stated in a simple way your managers, customers, or colleagues say they want something, but you understand it as something else or simply forget about it. The next day there will be some fireworks and counter

One of the best techniques to avoid trouble is to depend on written communication for most activities. Today, in modern offices you have email, faxes, electronic chat, and many forms of communications. They can be used to your advantage.

Initially,

may

seem

a

bit

cumbersome, slow, and painful. But soon you will realize its immense benefits.

If you have ever dealt with any government organizations you will notice that everything depends only on written communication. You cannot get any work done without a formal application, required forms, fees, or necessary signatures. Secondly, all their communications internally and externally are only in written form.

It may be slow and often frustrating, but it is the only way to protect both parties. When there was a civil dispute over my grandmother’s property, the tax officials were summoned by the disputes commissioner. The tax officials brought all records, nearly thirty years old, including even a simple registered letter that my grandma had written to them regarding a tax query ages ago.

This is why governments work and survive all onslaughts.

Another advantage of putting things in writing is that written communication always provides a permanent record for any purpose or alleged misunderstandings later. Written forms of communication enable recipients to take time in reviewing the request and providing appropriate replies. Business proposals, status reports, 38

customer documentation, technical support, etc., all depend on clear written communication.

Other benefits of good writing skills include increased

efficiency, and enhanced company image in the industry.

Getting things in writing has certain inbuilt protection against criticism. Depending solely on verbal communications can lead you to various troubles, especially in hostile and abusive workplaces where people have dangerous selfagendas. People can say nasty stuff verbally but are highly afraid to put the same in writing and this fear can be beneficial in high-pressure jobs.

Even a brave, foul-mouthed business owner will rarely write any nasty stuff in any memo, as they know it can backfire. Either you work using old39

fashioned methods like trust, friendship, cooperation, and understanding, or you get everything in writing. I suggest put it in writing.

Trust does not work in the workplace anymore.

Gone are those days when your handshake or a verbal commitment was sacred, and lawyers were not required to enforce trust and execution.

Most bad bosses, customers, and rude people get away through the natural loopholes and escape routes of verbal communications.

Insisting on written communications can ensure there is no ambiguity created by people from hell.

One particular manager would ask for some work to be done. But, on completion she would find dozens of faults on how it should have been done, how it did not meet her expectations, and other grumblings. So, when something needs to 42

be done, ask WHAT needs to be done and also HOW it needs to be done to avoid complications of invented faults bad bosses usually create after the work is done.

Always keep your emails and replies very professional and diplomatic (however angry you may feel) for rude emails that you receive. Keep a copy of such emails and communications in more than one place. You can use it to your advantage later should a confronting situation arise.

Keep a copy of every email related to work no matter how trivial it may seem. No matter how trustworthy you may feel while giving or receiving a commitment, put it in writing in an email or some other document. People do experience

Refill water bottles – You can refuse to buy new single-use plastic bottles and instead refill a personal bottle with clean and take it with you when you travel. This way you don’t have to spend money buying a bottle or water wherever you go. Only about 20% of the single-use plastic bottles worldwide get recycled. The remaining ones end up in landfills, oceans, rivers, forests, etc., and ruin our environment, flora, and fauna.

Reduce energy usage – Switch off unnecessary lights, ACs, heaters, and gadgets. Use them minimally and only when necessary and not on always. Do whatever work necessary when there is sunlight instead of being awake till late night.

published? Who will publish your manuscript and get the books into bookstores and other places?

There are three ways to get this done, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. The first method is by contacting publishers directly. The 82

second method is to go via a literary agent. The third method is to self-publish. And each method has its advantages and disadvantages. In this article we shall discuss literary agents. A literary agent is a person who is a middleman between a publisher and an author. The reason for the existence of literary agent is most top publishers do not allow writers to contact them directly.

Authors have to route their manuscripts through professional literary agents.

Agents are mostly former employees of the publishing industry and will have a rich experience in what books will sell or won’t sell.

They will review a manuscript in detail to see if that book is going to sell well in the market. If they feel a book has value they will accept to represent and pitch it to reputed publishers. For 83

Some agents still live in the Stone Age and expect authors to send them a hard copy of their manuscript chapters printed with double line spacing along with a self-addressed stamped envelope for sending replies. You can easily spend hundreds of dollars just on printing query letters and its postage.

In addition to the above, they expect authors to give detailed marketing plans on how they will promote their book, the budgets they have, how many copies they can personally sell, etc. All these are not easy for new authors who may have written their first novel out of a passion.

There are even complex books with excruciating details on how to get a literary agent and pass their tough guidelines. Secondly, even if you pass 89

their roadblocks and get selected it can easily be months and years to get your book published.

Once the book is handled by an agent you cannot approach other agents if you don’t like the speed of progress. In addition, you will also have limited rights over your book. There is also a risk of the book being rejected at the last minute because some publisher’s editor or marketing staff was not comfortable with the book. Then, you have to start all over again and wait for months/years for some other agent or publisher to review and accept your book.

Many authors have spent years and hundreds of rejections trying to get a literary agent. The royalties are also low like 10-15% of the gross sales and the book may even go out of print if it does not sell well in the first few months. It is 90

also not easy to update the manuscript, change the cover, or the pricing as they will be the decision of the agent and the publisher. Some agents will also insist authors to make substantial changes to their story or characters, which may completely alter the book.

Shady agents: This is another headache. There are certain shady literary agents who will be very eager to accept all manuscripts and swiftly sign contracts with authors. Then they will start demanding various fees. So, don’t be thrilled if an agent quickly accepts your manuscript, sends you a contract, and demands a processing fee.

Such agents exist mainly to prey on unsuspecting newbies and will extract money by giving false hopes to new authors. For example, there are many shady literary agents who will keep 91

demanding money periodically to cover office fees like mailing, international calls, sundry expenses, etc., for marketing the manuscript to publishers. But, in reality, they will not be interested in helping any authors nor will they have any contacts with any reputed publishers.

While good agents can help shape an author’s career, shady agents can ruin them. So, it’s important to do your research before signing with an agent. One way to confirm if an agent is reputable is if they’re a member of the Association of Authors’ Representatives (AAR), an organization whose members promise an ethical code of conduct when representing clients.

To summarize, new authors should explore if searching for a literary agent is worth their time and money. They can scout for suitable agents 92

My name, Atom, comes from the Greek word Atomos, meaning indivisible. The ancient Greeks were the first to imagine that I was the basic unit of all matter. It was only after the early 1800s that scientists began to understand how I work.

It takes a lot of me and my friends to join together to become something. For example, there are so many atoms inside your human body that it’s not even possible to write that number on a piece of paper or even an entire book.

Similarly, everything in the universe is made up of billions of atoms all glued together.

I come in various types called Elements. This is because some atoms have more protons, electrons, and neutrons. There are 92 natural elements and some 30 more man-made elements that scientists created in a laboratory.

Did you know that I live forever and cannot be fully destroyed? Isn’t that amazing? But my nucleus can be broken by chemical reactions and then I can share my electrons with other atoms.

My proton ball is electrically charged and scientists call this as a positive charge. The electron ball is also electrically charged and holds a negative charge. Protons and electrons attract each other. But my neutron ball does not have any charge is called neutral.

Scientists have calculated how many protons exist in the nucleus of every element. This is 106

known as my atomic number and it determines what kind of chemical I become. For example, Hydrogen has an atomic number of 1 because every hydrogen atom has one proton in its nucleus and one electron rotating it. Similarly, my friend Carbon has six protons and six neutrons.
