‘The Beatles: Get Back’ shows the end of the group’s run

More than 50 years later, any Beatles fan knows the iconic band ended. However, how it reached that end is now shown in greater detail than ever before. During the 1969 recording sessions for what would be the quartet’s final studio album, “Let It Be,” filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg was given extensive access to the group’s creative process. It was marked by considerable discord – encompassing George Harrison’s departure, which turned out to be temporary at the time, after Ringo Starr quit and returned previously – as the musicians tried to come up with new songs that also would fuel their first live concert, a legendary London rooftop performance, in more than two years. Though the resulting footage yielded a 1970 documentary also titled “Let It Be,” the majority of it has been unseen ... but Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson has restored it and assembled it into a three-part documentary. “The

Beatles: Get Back” debuts on Disney+ over three consecutive days starting Thursday, Nov. 25, with its producers also including Starr, Paul McCartney, Harrison’s widow Olivia and John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono Lennon. Besides the almost 60 hours of visuals that were recorded, Jackson worked with nearly 150 hours of audio material also stored away for more than a half-century. He has shaped it all into a history of how The Beatles invented their last collaborative triumph, working with their “backs against the wall” (as John Lennon claimed was how they worked best). Principally written by Lennon and McCartney (Harrison contributed two selections), the 12 tracks on “Let It Be” include – besides the title tune and “Get Back” – “The Long and Winding Road,” widely deemed to be The Beatles’ valedictory song not only for its theme, but also for the fact that it was the last No. 1

hit they had on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100, released as a single shortly after they broke up in 1970. Originally intended for a theatrical release before it was acquired by Disney+, “The Beatles: Get Back” is being accompanied by a 50th-anniversary re-release of the “Let It Be” album, initially planned for last year but delayed (like so many projects) due to the coronavirus pandemic. It offers a new stereo remix overseen by Giles Martin, the son of George Martin, the celebrated music producer so integral to the group’s success that he often was called “The Fifth Beatle.” An amazing thing about The Beatles’ legacy is that just when you think you’ve seen or heard everything available about them, something else tends to surface. “The Beatles: Get Back” reaffirms that, immediately establishing itself as one of the definitive projects about a seminal element of music history.

Henry McMaster’s executive order on May 11 allows parents to opt their children out of wearing masks in public schools because of widespread coronavirus vaccine access for adults in South Carolina. Eddie Murphy’s Top 10 Movies

“Dolemite Is My Name” (2019): Murphy earned raves for what many deemed his big-screen comeback, the biography of Rudy Ray Moore, who transformed his career in comedy and rap into that of a martial-artsmovie star. “Dreamgirls” (2006): An Oscar nomination came Murphy’s way for his performance as an R&B music impresario in this screen version of the Supremes-inspired stage hit. “Life” (1999): Reteamed from “Boomerang,” Murphy and Martin Lawrence sport plenty of makeup – but also convey aging effectively through their acting and mannerisms – as they play inmates on a prison farm over the span of a half-century. “Doctor Dolittle” (1998): Another remake made it clear Murphy was no Rex Harrison, but he didn’t have to be as the updated medic who can talk to animals. “The Nutty Professor” (1996): If anyone was going to try to recapture the Jerry Lewis spirit of multiple personalities, Murphy was the man for this remake, tackling no fewer

An immediate breakout talent on “Saturday Night Live,” Eddie Murphy teamed with Nick Nolte and Dan Aykroyd for early movie successes, but “Beverly Hills Cop” rested squarely on his shoulders.

The 1984 action-comedy – which Cinemax shows along with the two sequels as a Thanksgiving feast Thursday, Nov. 25 – was an enormous hit that left no doubt that Murphy had arrived on the big screen. Envisioned earlier as a project for such performers as Mickey Rourke and Sylvester Stallone, the final version wisely left plenty of room for Murphy’s brand of improvisational humor. And even if it wasn’t really improvised, it sure felt that way, playing right into the Murphy style.

The actor-comedian plays fast-talking Detroit police detective Axel Foley, who goes AWOL to California to get to the bottom of a longtime friend’s murder. He’s very clearly a fish out of water, and his manner of playing by his own rules greatly worries the Beverly Hills lieutenant (Ronny Cox) and police partners (Judge Reinhold, John Ashton) who end up keeping an eye on Foley as he continually rocks the figurative boat.

Jonathan Banks, more recently known for “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” makes his presence known with few words as the possible villain’s henchman. In fact, though it’s a star vehicle for Murphy, “Beverly Hills Cop” is very generous in giving supporting players their moments under the direction of Martin Brest (“Midnight Run,” “Scent of a Woman”). Another great example of that is Bronson Pinchot, priceless in his moments as forked-tongue gallery worker Serge, who alternately confounds and amuses Foley. Another strength of “Beverly Hills Cop” is its hitdriven soundtrack led by Glenn Frey’s theme song “The Heat Is On.” The Pointer Sisters had a huge success with “Neutron Dance,” and composer Harold Faltermeyer even scored on the charts with his “Axel F” instrumental. While Murphy hasn’t blazed as brightly at the box office in a while, there’s been talk for some time of his returning in a “Beverly Hills Cop 4,” which currently is set up as a direct-to-streaming Netflix project. Whether or not that ultimately comes to be, he’ll always be able to count the original film as one of the top victories in his career ... and it hasn’t lost any of its sizable entertainment value over the better part of 40 years.

For this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the bands are back together. Last time, the event altered some traditions to meet coronavirus-pandemic protocols, one being the postponement of appearances by marching bands from schools across the country. Since the parade won’t be for television only for 2021, spectators will be back as will the bands as NBC broadcasts the 95th annual edition of the New York holiday procession Thursday, Nov. 25. “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker will have their usual roles as the three-hour special’s hosts. “We were so happy to get to do a parade, in whatever form it came,” Guthrie recalls of last year’s procession ... with Kotb adding. “Every time the
