Portable units, piping materials big sellers at hardware stores BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Sumter may not have the rolling hills found in cities farther north, but one neighborhood road between Alice Drive Elementary School and Second Mill Pond was slanted enough for those barely broken-out speedsters to provide hours of entertainment the morning after a handful of inches of snow powdered, then iced, the area. Streamers stun: the best cooking shows of 2023
BY GEORGE DICKIE There’s a lot to sink your teeth into when it comes to watching TV. If cooking mayhem and breaking baking boundaries are your thing, these series — currently available to stream — might just be for you: “Chef’s Table” (Netflix): Following a different top-tier chef in each episode, this docuseries has travelled from Italy to Thailand to Peru, highlighting culinary innovation, techniques and cooking philosophies. Currently, six seasons of “Chef’s Table” are available, with more seasons coming soon. With 30 visually stunning episodes and two additional spinoff series — “Chef’s Table: France” and “Chef’s Table: BBQ” — there is sure to be an episode to fit everyone’s taste, making mouths water and stomachs grumble coast to coast. “Hell’s Kitchen” (Prime Video): Gordon Ramsay is back and hotter than ever. With 21 seasons to binge and Season 22 on the air, this series proves a fan-favourite, following Ramsay as he puts 18 aspiring chefs through the gauntlet of his “fiery” command, each given a spot in his intense, high-octane culinary academy. The chefs are separated into two teams, each led by previous culinary “graduates.” “Secret Chef” (Disney+): This series, created by chef David Chang (“Ugly Delicious”), welcomes chefs — from “professional chefs and home cooks to social media influencers,” according to Disney — to take part in an unusual cooking challenge, in which each chef is isolated in a secret subterranean kitchen, each connected by
a series of conveyor belts. With no judges (and only an animated talking hat for guidance), the chefs are tasked with performing a series of cooking challenges, before they must then rate each other’s dishes through blind taste tests. “Ciao House” (Prime Video): Tuscany, dubbed the epicentre of Italian culture and cuisine, acts as the backdrop for this new series, which premiered in 2023. Judged and hosted by Alex Guarnaschelli (“Alex Vs. America”) and Gabriele Bertaccini (“Say I Do”), “Ciao House” asks 10 chefs to live and cook together in a breathtaking Italian villa as they are put through a gauntlet of tests to determine their mastery of the local cuisine. Navigating alliances and rivalries, these chefs must prove they have what it takes to win a life-changing culinary education. “Baking Impossible” (Netflix): Showcasing “bakineering” at its finest, this one-season series, hosted by Justin Willman (“Magic for Humans”), welcomes pairs of contestants to try their hand at the world of extreme baking, asking them to complete challenges that combine baking with engineering (see: “bakineering”) with someone they’ve previously never met. Each team — composed of one baker and one engineer — has 18 hours to complete their projects, at which point their creations face stress tests and taste tests by the judges, who then eliminate the weakest pair.
“The Apartment” (1960): Director Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning comedy-drama concludes on New Year’s Eve, as elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine) makes her romantic choice between corporate executive J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) and his recent employee C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) — resulting in one of the most famous movie lines ever. “Ocean’s Eleven” (1960): The lights go out throughout Las Vegas when midnight hits on New Year’s Eve, thanks to the ex-military buddies led by suave Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) in the ultimate “Rat Pack” movie. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford play some of the other pals who are in on the simultaneous robbery of several casinos. Turner Classic Movies shows the film often and appropriately presents it again on Sunday, Dec. 31. “About Last Night ... “ (1986): As evidence that almost anyone’s New Year’s Eve has to go better, take Danny and Debbie (Rob Lowe, Demi Moore), whose live-in relationship hits the skids amid a huge holiday crowd at a favorite Chicago bar. While she wants to comfort a girlfriend (Elizabeth Perkins) who’s just suffered a trauma in love, he wants to party, and the rest pretty much spells itself out. “When Harry Met Sally ... “ (1989): Although the picture has a postscript beyond it, this comedy’s pivotal scene is set at a New Year’s Eve party where hopeless — and hapless — romantic Sally (Meg Ryan) isn’t feeling very celebratory, until longtime confidant Harry (Billy Crystal) shows up and finally professes the feelings for her that took so long to develop. “Peter’s Friends” (1992): Along the lines of “The Big Chill,” this engaging British-made comedy reunites a group of college chums at one’s (Stephen Fry) English estate on New Year’s Eve. A couple of the film’s other actors directed (Kenneth Branagh) and co-wrote (Rita Rudner) the picture, which also features Hugh Laurie, well before he became an American television star in “House.” “Entrapment” (1999): The dawn of the millennium is a big factor in this heist caper, as an insurance investigator (Catherine Zeta-Jones) tries to entrap master thief (Sean Connery) by joining his scheme to swipe billions of dollars while just about everyone else is cheering the arrival of the 21st century. “New Year’s Eve” (2011): Well, sure. There are loads of stories and stars in director Garry Marshall’s ode to Dec. 31, but arguably the most affecting segment teams Robert De Niro and Halle Berry as a cancer patient and his nurse, who await the legendary midnight ball drop together.

So long, 2023: ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ ushers in another new year BY JAY BOBBIN Stop rockin’ around the Christmas tree, because it’s time to head to New York City — via your living room TV — for “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest,” ringing in the new year Sunday, Dec. 31, when the annual special is broadcast live on ABC from The Big Apple. Seacrest, who will undoubtedly be toasting his upcoming gig as the new host of “Wheel of Fortune” when the ball drops, will be joined by co-hosts from parties across America as everyone welcomes the new year with musical performances to keep audiences dancing all the way into 2024. Every year, partiers fill Times Square in New York City, braving the brisk weather to watch the ball drop. Top musical artists keep everyone celebrating warm with exciting live performances you can’t help but rock out to, from stages in The Big Apple and Los Angeles. The at-home broadcast also features clips from celebrations around the world as countries spanning every time zone count down the last seconds of 2023. The superstars helping us ring in 2024 are Aqua

Tuning in to the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” broadcast is an annual tradition for millions of viewers, and a convention that began all the way back to the eve of 1973. That year, feeling that the New Year’s Eve broadcast special had grown stale, Dick Clark, known primarily at the time as the long-standing host of the music and dance program “American Bandstand,” used his connection to youth culture to craft a new kind of special that would attract a younger audience. Clark was the face of New Year’s Eve programming until 2004 when the host suffered a stroke, leading “Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee” anchor Regis Philbin to step in that year. Clark returned to co-host the show in 2005 alongside “American Idol” host Seacrest, who celebrates his 19th Times Square New Year with this upcoming broadcast. Clark and Seacrest co-hosted “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” for years, ringing in their final new year together in 2012 before Clark’s death that August. Clark’s legacy lives on in the iconic broadcast he created, not just in its name but in its spirit. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last December, Seacrest shared what Clark taught him about what the show means to viewers, saying, “I think the idea for us is just to create a big party for people who don’t want to go anywhere, who want to just relax, be in their homes, be with their families, order pizza, order Buffalo wings, whatever it is.” Seacrest added, “We can bring the excitement, the energy and the new year to them. That’s what Dick told me all along. He goes, ‘We’re talking to people who are at home, but we bring the excitement to them through the show.’”
