It doesn’t take much to move you. You must make some changes to get back to enjoying yourself. Taking part in festivities could help you to smile again. Don’t refuse an invitation. GEMINI

It’s impossible to please everyone, no matter how hard you try or how much you compromise. You must weigh the pros and cons. At work and elsewhere, it may be necessary to take a more diplomatic approach in certain situations. CANCER

You’ll be extremely efficient this week and get everything done — whether at work or home decorating for Christmas. You’ll pay attention to the small details so that everything in your home is perfect. LEO

You’ll be put on a pedestal for performing a remarkable heroic deed. You may involuntarily participate in an activity. In return, you’ll receive a reward or at least some form of recognition. VIRGO

You may have to change your holiday plans at the last minute and you’ll have to swap your decorations. You may also want to take some time to focus on a particular family member. LIBRA

You may be considering treating yourself to a new car as a Christmas present. You’ll be on the move this week. You’ll have a lot of errands to run and a lot of details to manage. SCORPIO

Spoil yourself and your family this festive season. There may be a system failure when it comes to paying your bills online. This week, you need your partner to be sensitive and take care of you.

“17 Again” (Available Now) Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry) was a high school basketball star with a bright future, but he threw it all away to marry his girlfriend and raise their child. Almost 20 years later, Mike’s marriage has failed, his kids think he’s a loser, and his job is going nowhere. He gets a chance to correct the mistakes of his past and change his life when he is miraculously transformed into a teenager (played by Zac Efron). But, in trying to fix his past, Mike may be jeopardizing his present and future.

“The Matrix Resurrections” (Dec. 10) To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Thomas Anderson, aka Neo (Keanu Reeves), will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. If he’s learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of — or into — the Matrix. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn’t yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before.

Q&A: David Duchovny

BY JAY BOBBIN

803-774-1200

Q: It’s been interesting to see David Duchovny back in the public eye for the movie he made with Meg Ryan. How long was he on “The X-Files”? A: The actor’s run as FBI Agent Fox Mulder began in 1993, and he has said that he didn’t expect the Fox series (now repeating on Comet) to last as long as it did, nor to be as popular as it became. His regular weekly run on the show went through the seventh season, when headlines were made by a lawsuit Duchovny filed against 20th Century Fox Television, alleging that it sold rights to repeats of the show to Fox-affiliated stations for less than they were worth … thus costing him some profits. The suit was settled, but Duchovny’s contract for the show was up, so he left as a full-time cast member (with Robert Patrick assuming the role of a Mulder surrogate, John Doggett). However, Duchovny returned for part of the eighth www.theitem.com season, with the explanation that Mulder had been abducted by aliens. He also came back for the presumed series finale in Season 9, but as it turned out, he wasn’t done with the show yet.

Weather makes heaters hot item

A (snow) day to play

Portable units, piping materials big sellers at hardware stores BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Sumter may not have the rolling hills found in cities farther north, but one neighborhood road between Alice Drive Elementary School and Second Mill Pond was slanted enough for those barely broken-out speedsters to provide hours of entertainment the morning after a handful of inches of snow powdered, then iced, the area. The Associated Press reported the largest snowfall — 8 inches — was found in Williamsburg County near Andrews but claimed areas around Sumter picked up 7 inches. There were about 4 inches on the lawns lining the street where a group of kids were playing Thursday morning. “I think it caught us all off guard,” said Robert Jones, whose two sons, Wyatt, 8, and Jeremiah, 12, were taking turns racing on

Paige Sanders, 10, stood among the Jones brothers and their friends, laying out the rules for the race. You go there, and you go there. “Yesterday, we tried to go out here, but it was too powdery,” Sarah Smith said. Her sons, 9-yearold Banks and 7-year-old Eli, were also taking turns racing. “Now that there’s a layer of ice, it’s perfect.”

The storm may have passed by Thursday, leaving sled-friendly roads and a winter wonderland across the Midlands, but the

height of it Wednesday evening was not so fun for Smith’s husband. Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Department of Transportation reported traffic was backed up on U.S. 378 because of cars sliding off the road, getting stuck and being unable to make it up an icy hill. Smith said her husband was in traffic for two hours.

How Current is Your Will?

Have you kept your Will current? Have you had or are you undergoing major life changes that warrant a Will review or change? “Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Celebration” (CBS/Paramount+ — Dec. 17, Special Premiere)

Recorded live across two nights before a sold-out crowd at the legendary Holly-wood Bowl, this special celebrates Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday, and the 12-time Grammy Award winner’s contributions to popular culture and music. This historic concert event features collaborations and once-in-a-lifetime performances by Willie Nelson, Beck, Gary Clark Jr., Sheryl Crow, Snoop Dogg, Norah Jones, Mi-randa Lambert, Dave Matthews, Nelson’s sons Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson, Keith Richards, George Strait and Chris Stapleton. The special is hosted by stars Jennifer Garner, Chelsea Handler, Woody Harrelson, Ethan Hawke, Helen Mirren and Owen Wilson.

If so, Glenn Givens can help with this matter by reviewing your Will and amending your Will or creating a new Will if wanted or needed.

“Marnie” (1964): In and around his James Bond work, Connery set out to diversify by working with Alfred Hitchcock on this melodrama about a businessman with a strong interest in a troubled employee (Tippi Hedren). “Goldfinger” (1964): Most Bond purists concur this is the first 007 screen adventure that has it all, including a deftly balanced Connery performance that blends suave charm and rugged action smoothly. “The Hill” (1965): The long association of Connery and director Sidney Lumet began with this grueling drama of World War II military prisoners forced to do hard labor. “The Offence” (1973): Connery’s desire to get off the “star” pedestal manifested itself in this gritty police drama, again under Lumet’s direction, about a London police detective whose anger goes too far when he interrogates a suspect. “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974): One of many familiar faces in this great staging of the Agatha Christie mystery, Connery makes his presence known as one of the suspects questioned by Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney). “The Wind and the Lion” (1975): Connery is superb as a Middle Eastern renegade who invites large-scale trouble by kidnapping an American (Candice Bergen). “The Man Who Would Be King” (1975): Originally envisioned for such stars as Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart, this John Hustondirected Rudyard Kipling adaptation - which Turner Classic Movies shows Saturday, Sept. 8 - was delayed many years, which was great news for Connery and Michael Caine in playing soldiers of fortune in India. “Robin and Marian” (1976): Being shown by Turner Classic Movies on Saturday, Dec. 16, this wonderfully mature take on the Robin Hood legend cast Connery opposite Audrey Hepburn (who played, of course, his true love Maid Marian). “The Untouchables” (1987): Oscar came calling for Connery, and deservedly so, for his portrayal of a Chicago beat cop whose street smarts go a long way in helping U.S. Treasury man Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) take down Al Capone (Robert De Niro). “The Hunt for Red October” (1990): Connery stepped in for the originally cast Klaus Maria Brandauer in Tom Clancy’s tale of a Russian submarine whose captain may be trying to defect, drawing CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) into the matter.

Masked merriment: ‘The Masked Singer’ presents holiday sing-along

Still making music: Barry Manilow celebrates the holidays on NBC BY JAY BOBBIN While we may already be in the season for celebration, any occasion showcasing Barry Manilow is a holiday for his generations of fans. A winner of a Grammy, two Primetime Emmys and a special Tony Award, the enduringly popular singer-songwriter has released seasonal albums over the course of his nearly 50 years as a star, and some of those tunes will factor in — along with many of his pop standards, from “Mandy” to “Copacabana” — when “Barry Manilow’s A Very Barry Christmas,” airsMonday, Dec. 11, on NBC. (The special also will stream on Peacock starting the next day.) Taped at the International Showroom of the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino (which was formerly the Las Vegas Hilton), where Manilow has broken Elvis Presley’s record for doing the most shows at the venue during his 14-year association there, the hour will also include such seasonal favorites as “Jingle Bells” and “White Christmas.” A 24-piece band backs Manilow during his Vegas performances, one of which was attended by network executives — setting the stage, both figuratively and literally, for the new special. “A whole bunch of NBC people came to see the

View from the Couch

regular show I do at the Westgate, and they were interested in filming that,” the genial Manilow explains. “During the conversation after the show, they said they were looking for Christmas stuff because they couldn’t create anything until after the writers’ strike, which was going on then. I said, ‘I’ve got a Christmas show.’ They said, ‘You do?’ And I said, ‘Yeah. And it’s all ready to go, if you want it.’ “We do it in various places every year,” notes Manilow, “and I sent them a video of it, and they loved what they saw. They came to the Westgate with their cameras, we had a big audience, and off we went. The only problem was me, because I kept forgetting to do certain things, but they made the show even more beautiful than it was before. There were many more lights and more Christmas trees, and it was just gorgeous.” Manilow has a long-standing affinity for the holiday season. “I love my Christmas albums,” he maintains of “Because It’s Christmas,” “A Christmas Gift of Love” and “In the Swing of Christmas.” “I loved doing them. I don’t listen to my albums, but now and again, if I’m going to listen to any of them, it’s those. I love the arrangements and the orchestrations and the songs that I chose. I’m very proud of those Christmas albums.” Still, Manilow realizes that his fans also want his time-tested hits. That catalog encompasses such standards as “I Write the Songs,” “Could It Be Magic,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Tryin’ to Get the Feeling,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Weekend in New England,” “This One’s for You,” “Even Now,” “Daybreak” and “New York City Rhythm.” “I’ve figured out a way of putting together some of the hits and a lot of Christmas songs,” Manilow says, “but it always still feels like a Christmas show even if I’m doing ‘I Write the Songs’ or ‘Mandy.’ I think the audiences would probably be disappointed if I didn’t do the hits, and that’s what we’ve done for NBC, too. We had to edit it down, because the live Christmas show goes about 90 minutes, and you can’t do all of that on a one-hour TV show with commercials. We recorded everything, though, in the order that I always do it.”

BY GEORGE DICKIE Christmas with a … cow? Maybe. But only if they don’t get voted out. “The Masked Singer” puts holiday cheer center stage, as a new edition of “The Masked Singer Holiday Special” debuts on a special night, Tuesday, Dec. 12, on Fox. “Holiday splendor and masked merriment collide,” the network promises. “In this beloved yuletide special featuring all-new jaw-dropping surprise performances from Season 10 contestants, spectacular sing-along fun from Masked Singer alumni and ‘The Masked Singer’ carolers: Nick Cannon [“Celebrity Prank Wars”], Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg [“Two and a Half Men”], Ken Jeong [“Community”], Robin Thicke [“Paula,” 2014] and Nicole Scherzinger [“Killer Love,” 2011]. Celebrate the holidays with a look back at the best moments from the milestone 10th season, all leading into the can’t-miss final two episodes!” During the special, Season 10’s remaining contestants (still masked) will perform a slate of holiday songs, with each act including some all-new animated clues that just might give away the singer’s identity. Meanwhile, the already unmasked celebrities will join in on the holiday fun, together performing their favorite festive tunes. While this year’s upcoming performances are being kept under

wraps, previous “Masked Singer” holiday events saw Crocodile (Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, “Now or Never,” 2002) singing “Silent Night,” the Sun (LeAnn Rimes, “Blue,” 1996) singing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” and Mushroom (Aloe Blacc, “Good Things,” 2010) performing “The Christmas Song.” Even panelist Ken Jeong got in the spirit of the season, hopping on stage to energetically sing “The Little Drummer Boy” during 2020’s sing-along event. So far this season, “The Masked Singer” has revealed: Hibiscus as Luann de Lesseps (“Real Housewives of New York City”), Hawk as Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), The Royal Hen as tennis player Billie Jean King, the Pickle as Michael Rapaport (“Atypical”), Tom Sandoval (“Vanderpump Rules”) as Diver, Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) as Rubber Ducky, Anonymouse as Demi Lovato (“Sonny with a Chance”) and more, with the remaining contestants still to be revealed in the season’s last two episodes — meaning this may just be the fans’ last chance to guess who stands behind the remaining masks. Sing along with your holiday favorites and try your best to guess who’s who, as “The Masked Singer Holiday Sing-Along” returns Tuesday, Dec. 12, on Fox.
