Clarendon Memorial steadily climbed from an F in fall 2012 to a D in spring 2013 to a C in fall 2013, while Tuomey Healthcare System went from earning an A for both fall 2012 and spring 2013 to a ON THE NET C for fall 2013. F are calculated under the guidance of the Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel and analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, according to the organization’s news release. Factors such as medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections that kill or hurt patients are used to figure the scores. “We still have not received official word from Leapfrog about our score,� said Brenda Chase, Tuomey spokeswoman. “We are reviewing all other information now to determine what might have changed over the last quarter. We take safety and quality very seriously and will review the data.� Clarendon Memorial’s CEO, Richard Stokes, was not available for comment. BY THE NUMBERS Since August 2012, drivers along a portion of Alice Drive have passed what sometimes seems to be a never-ending pathway of orange-and-white barrels. However, as familiar as Sumterites have become with the B500LC Lane Changer traffic drum, made by Work Area Protection Corporation, most drivers are likely clueless as to some of the more intricate details regarding these barrels along the road.

Construction will resume on Alice Drive in the next couple of weeks. “We’re in the process of replacing all of the drainage,� said George McGregor, planning director for the Sumter City/County Planning Department. “We’re waiting for six large, precast structures to be delivered. There will be flagging operations associated with the installation of the drainage, meaning some one-way stops.� While the S.C. Department of Transportation is overseeing the $9.3 million widening of Alice Drive, McGregor keeps up with it as he is executive director of Sumter Urban Area Transportation Study. The drainage installation should take four to six months, McGregor said. The project is coming within budget, but it’s running three months behind schedule. “It took a lot longer than expected to get the
