They came! COVID-19 couldn't stop them! From a recap of the Elite Series tournament that finally happened after a six-month postponement to a scenic look at the different types of hunting camps and how stores are still trying to supply us with the guns and ammo we need for hunting as a way to stay outside, take a breath of fresh air. They're unique because they're not from big-box stores, and they're small enough to fit in a stocking without losing their appeal and turning into "just a stocking stuffer." And, again, there are so many small businesses that have superior stuffers and need your support (a.k.a. your dollars). And to round it all out, we have a story about the local chapter of the Cross Trail Outfitters, an outdoor club that connects boys and young men with nature, fishing and hunting skills, mentors and faith.

To me, this issue is what it's all about. It's got food, fishing and family.

What more do we need in life?

Our holiday issue is always a fun magazine to put together because, well, it's the holidays. This year is, of course, marred by COVID-19, meaning there's no story on the Fantasy of Lights display at Swan Lake-Iris Gardens because it's just a drive-through this year. The idea of gathering in large groups is still taboo.

But let's get those humbugs out of mind and out of sight.

We're starting these pages off for you with two types of food stories, both approved for the COVID-19 era.

If you want the sweet taste of the holidays without cooking, you can get it while also supporting local small businesses. On the other hand, if you're hosting a holiday, you can make your menu pandemic-friendly with these bite-sized recipes, nixing the buffet line.

The coronavirus has impacted communities in ways we will probably continue to see long after we stop getting sick. When it comes to baked sweets and treats, local at-home foodies have you covered this holiday season.

Three Sumter bakers are ready to serve up sweet treats like cheesecake, cookies, cocoa bombs and pound cakes for you and your family for the holidays.

MRS. J'S CHEESECAKE

The name Mrs. J’s Cheesecake says it all.

The woman- and veteran-owned business specializes in gourmet cheesecakes that

have had mouths watering in the Sumter and surrounding communities.

“I’ve been doing this for about three-anda-half years, and I decided to do it because once I retired from the military, I kind of found myself trying to figure out what am I doing,” said owner Julie Smith. “This is a way for me to be in my community and interact with the people in my town. It’s been so awesome.”

For the holiday season, Smith said she will offer many of their premier flavors, such as salted caramel, pumpkin, white chocolate raspberry, turtle, cinnamon roll, red velvet and, of course, classic

cheesecake.

“My favorite one to make is cinnamon roll because of all the different elements that when you’re making a cinnamon roll, this is very, very like it,” Smith said. “The fan favorite hands down is salted caramel.”

The salted caramel always seems to capture her customers' attention, and it’s been the top seller for a while. It’s also great for any holiday occasion.

For Christmas, Smith will be adding some additional flavors like Christmas cookie and hot cocoa, and the menu is still in the works.

Beth Bolinger, baker of Beth B’s Cookies and Treats, will be cooking up the works in her home this holiday season with her traditional fan favorites.

“I do cookies and cakes,” Bolinger said, “but my passion is the decorated sugar cookie.”

The traditional cookies always seem to be a favorite for both Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and she’s already preparing orders for January 2021.

Bolinger said for Thanksgiving, she loves making the pound cakes for families.

However, cookies still tend to be popular for both holidays because it’s her No. 1 requested baked good.

After two years of baking, Bolinger decided to experiment with a new item this year that she may offer.

Sweet Southern Crumbs will also be making cookies for the holidays.

Baker Tiffany Gaddy said it’s been a busy time this year already, as customers have been craving her sugar cookies.

“I do mostly decorated royal icing sugar cookies,” Gaddy said. “I offer just different traditional more than anything.”

Each holiday cookie comes in different shapes for family fun. For Thanksgiving or fall occasions, there are leaves, acorns and turkeys. For Christmas, cookies are shaped like Santa, stockings, Rudolph and snowflakes.

However, the fan favorite has always been the soft gingerbread cookies, which Gaddy said is her favorite because it’s traditional, simple and yummy.

Recently, Gaddy tested a new recipe for the upcoming holidays that has had an uproar of great reviews. She plans to offer apple spice cookies on a limited basis for Thanksgiving.

Last year, Sweet Southern Crumbs offered a Santa plate with a personalized mug, which had a person’s name on it, and tiny gingerbread cookies on a holiday plate.

Gaddy was asked to make the gift bundle again this year, and it’s in the works as she continues creating her Christmas designs.

BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores.

Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week.

Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand.

After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region.

Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday.

The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall.

ith a wild, unpredictable year coming to a close, many of us are probably looking forward to the holidays and a return to some kind of normal – a chance for seeing family and friends, decorating, baking and finding the perfect gifts. But with the coronavirus surging again in the United States, it’s important for everyone to make changes to keep everyone safe, including at holiday parties.

It might be wise to skip the traditional serveyourself buffet line this year in favor of smaller bites that don’t require touching the same spoon as dozens of other guests. To help you with a few ideas, we chose a few appetizers for a socially distanced holiday party, ones you can serve with toothpicks, cellophane gift bags or in Mason jars tied with festive ribbon. These three party snacks are simple and quick to make, and the nut mix can make a perfect gift, too.

My husband said he enjoyed the sausage balls with peach bourbon BBQ sauce from Charlotte’s Web General Store, which we found one Friday at the USC Sumter Farmers Market. This is a recipe I’d like to experiment with, finding different spices to try. The original recipe called for a bit of cayenne pepper, which I had run out of in trying to keep squirrels away from my plants this summer (the squirrels just laughed at that, so don’t waste your cayenne). If you’d like to try it with the cayenne, just sub it for the ground cloves.

MAPLE CINNAMON SPICED NUTS From Table for Two

Ingredients: 1 egg white 2 tablespoons maple syrup 3 cups unsalted nuts ½ cup granulated sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon allspice ½ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 14 NOVEMBER 2020 - JANUARY 2021 | LAKESIDE

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

Set aside.

• In a large bowl, beat the egg white and maple syrup until frothy.

• In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, salt and spices.

• Pour the nuts into the bowl of the egg white and maple syrup. Toss the nuts, and coat them well.

• Pour the bowl of the sugar and spices over the nuts, toss and make sure everything is coated well with the spice mixture.

• Pour the entire bowl onto the lined

baking sheet, and spread in an even layer.

• Bake for 20-25 minutes, occasionally turning the nuts so they don’t burn.

• Store in an airtight container.

CRESCENT ROLL VEGGIE BARS

CREAM CHEESE SAUSAGE BALLS

Ingredients: 2 (8 oz.) packages refrigerated crescent rolls 2 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese 1 cup mayonnaise 1 (1 oz.) package powdered Original Ranch dressing mix 1 cup grated broccoli 1/2 cup grated carrots 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped scallions

Ingredients: 1 pound pork hot sausage 1 (8 oz.) block cream cheese, softened 2 cups Bisquick baking mix 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

• Preheat the oven to 350°F. • Unroll the crescent rolls onto a nonstick baking sheet, separating the dough and arranging it in a single layer covering the entire baking sheet. Press together the perforations, and then using a fork, prick the dough all over.

• Bake the dough for 10 minutes until golden brown, then remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely.

• In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise and ranch dressing mix. Using a handheld mixer, blend together the ingredients until smooth and creamy.

• Spread the cream cheese mixture onto the completely cooled baking sheet of crescent rolls, covering the entire surface in an even layer.

• Sprinkle the grated broccoli, carrots, red pepper and scallions on top of the cream cheese, then place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on top and lightly press down the veggies.

• Cover the baking sheet securely with plastic wrap, and refrigerate the bars for a minimum of one hour and up to overnight.

• When ready to serve, slice the sheet into bars and serve.

• Preheat oven to 350°F. • Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

• In the bowl of a stand mixer, mix together sausage and cream cheese.

• Add in baking mix and stir until combined.

• Add in cheese. Feel free to be generous with your cheese measurements. Stir until combined.

• Scoop up meat mixture, form into 1-inch

balls and place on baking sheet.

• Once you have them all on the baking sheet, just go back and roll them in your hands to make them a bit more smooth on the outside.

• Pop your baking sheet in the fridge for 10 minutes.

• Once they are chilled, bake for about 25 minutes.

Stuff your stockings with unique items from Sumter's small business owners

O

ne of the most fun activities on Christmas morning is emptying our stockings. And one of the hardest parts of Christmas shopping is finding special stocking stuffers each year.

Luckily, there are local shops all around Sumter that sell handmade and unique gifts small enough to fit into a Christmas stocking.

Many are within walking distance of each other, such as those on Bultman Drive between Miller Road and Broad Street.

More locally owned stores around town also have small items for sale in addition to their other merchandise.

While there are far too many to list, here is a random sampling.

SIMPSON HARDWARE AND SPORTS on Wesmark Boulevard has a large

gift department with items suitable for children, women and men. Manager Harriet Walters said Christmas items will be arriving soon.

For a humorous gift for men, Walters recommended Poo-Pourri, a line of fragrant toilet sprays – that actually work. Travel-sized hand sanitizer in decorative bottles, soap-infused bath sponges, credit card- or drivers license-sized holders attached to a colorful lanyard are all popular, particularly with teenagers, she said.

Jewelry, key rings and reading glasses from various companies and many other interesting and unique items are also currently in stock.

ONE ACCORD, which just opened in its new location on West Liberty Street in downtown Sumter, is primarily a women’s clothing and art shop, and it has an interesting jewelry selection.

Owner Stephanie Dowling said she expects Christmas merchandise to arrive soon.

HEIRLOOM CHILD QUILT SHOP on Bultman Drive is a color-filled store for knitters, crocheters, quilt makers and seamstresses.

While a quilt won’t fit in a regular stocking, owner Flo Arrington said all the materials will. Notions like needles, thread, fat quarters and more are available. Arrington and staff have made a variety of cloth face masks for use during the pandemic, too.

Ann Duby of GARY’S FLORIST, also on Bultman, said she’ll be getting in Christmas items that will fit neatly into a stocking. Resin birds and angel figurines, ornaments and gourmet crackers will all be available.

ELEPHANT EAR GALLERY, a cooperative of artists and crafters, is next door to Gary’s Florist. This shop has all sorts of stocking stuffers, such as jewelry, ornaments, hand-turned wood and acrylic pens, hand-painted refrigerator magnets, coasters with Sumter scenes, food items such as jellies and jams, face masks, lip gloss, vintage glass items, fragrant handmade soaps and many, many more items available, sized and priced right to stuff your stockings.

SEACO MUSIC, across the street, has kazoos, ocarinas, harmonicas, Snoopy jaw harps, guitar picks and strings, drumsticks and a variety of audio cables available for the music lovers in your family.

It’s a traditional butcher shop, but

CARNIVORE BUTCHER AND BOTTLE is also a fine wine shop and a

gourmet shop. Jellies, preserves, gourmet cheeses, mulling spices, a variety of sauces, rubs,

cheese straws and more fill the store, and new items are always arriving. Try the garlic and onion jam, which in its jar fits nicely in a stocking and goes well with the prime meats sold in the shop.

THE FARMERS MARKET on the USC Sumter campus is open from 1 to 6 p.m. Fridays. Here you can find artists, cooks and crafters offering a variety of their work. Homemade jams, jellies and preserves, fresh-baked breads, handmade crocheted dolls, children’s jewelry, wooden toys and cloth masks are among the wellcrafted items here. Also at the market is Wildfire Farm with its goat milk soap and candles and beeswax candles.

The market will be open Fridays until Nov. 20, the Friday before Thanksgiving.

The vendors will end their year on the USC Sumter campus with a holiday market, which they expect to fill the field.

If you have fond memories of going through your stocking, you’ll likely recall the orange or banana tucked in the toe.

Take a trip to the FARM STORE on Bultman for a good selection. The Dellingers also have coffee beans, teas, preserves and more.

There are many other local shops offering items suitable for stuffing stockings. Take a walk down MAIN

STREET to find more.

A full stocking can make Christmas morning even more memorable. If you’ve got the time, wrapping the individual gifts adds to the excitement.

Outdoors club connects boys and young men to nature, faith

O

ften to be successful on a hunt, one needs a good guide, and that’s what the local chapter of a national hunting and fishing club attempts to do for boys and young men in life.

Outdoorsman Joel Chandler, outfitter with the Sumter-based Black River Chapter of Cross Trail Outfitters, and other chapter members spoke recently on the Christian ministry that works uniquely through outdoor activities/sports.

A lot of similarities can be drawn between being successful in the outdoors and with the spiritual side of life, and Cross Trail Outfitters tries to tie them together, Chandler said.

Men associated with the club serve as “guides” for weekend or day-long hunting trips and monthly sportsman’s day meetings with boys and young men ages 7 to 20.

At a recent sportsman’s day held in Sumter, Chandler and guide Robert Beaty provided skill training for about 12 young men on how to use a crossbow and proper shot placement with a rifle on white-tail deer.

Chandler shared that a tripod stand is a great device to use with a crossbow to keep it still and steady to hit your target in just the right spot.

Making smart use of accessories is important to ensure your shot goes straight to the mark, and it’s the same in a person’s spiritual walk

to use God’s word, the Bible and friends for accountability to hit the target as a man of God, Chandler said.

The local chapter’s sportsman’s day meetings are generally the third Sunday of each month and include a devotion and a skill, he added.

A weekend hunting outing usually involves three to four boys and guides, including Chandler, and run from Friday afternoon through Sunday.

Food, hunting, fishing, tents, campfires, devotions and the beauty of the outdoors are all part of the outings.

Chandler said it’s gratifying to see boys grasp a new skill or concept, whether it's hunting or spiritual, and grow in belief and confidence through the male mentorship.

“We have had kids learn some skills that they never thought they would have the opportunity to do,” Chandler said. “Some boys have made a profession of faith to the Lord, and that’s the ultimate objective and that’s very, very satisfying to see. That’s really what we are about – trying to pass our faith on. The hunting and fishing is a byproduct. We are just trying to be a disciple who makes disciples.”

With the boys in the club and the outdoor activities, he added that guides get to see a lot of firsts — ­ catching their first large catfish, killing their first deer, hog, doves or squirrels.

Considering the age ranges, Chandler and guides choose age-appropriate activities for the boys.

“It’s progression,” he said. “You take them at the age and the sports that they can handle in the outdoors, and you want to match them to what they can do. You don’t want to frustrate them; you want to teach them. You want it to be a challenge, but you want it to be within their reach.”

Eighth-grader McKinley Kelly, 14, of Sumter, said he’s been involved with the club for about five years. It has opened his eyes to a whole new world because he wasn’t involved in hunting and fishing before.

“I went to a summer camp with this, and this is how I accepted Christ,” Kelly said. “They have taught me so many things that I would never know if I never joined. Gun safety, they have taught me about Jesus. It’s just the greatest thing. Mr. Joel is like a grandfather or uncle to me.”

Beaty, a guide with the club for about a year now, enjoyed hunting and fishing with Chandler during his youth and the mentorship.

Now, he said, he’s impressed by the way Chandler interacts with the youth.

“Joel does not view the boys as just silly little boys who don’t know anything,” Beaty said. “He really treats them like young men, and he calls them higher to greater maturity and manhood.

n a most unusual year for tourism amid the pandemic, Clarendon County was still able to get in a prized event that was on the 2020 calendar.

Tiffany Myers, tourism director for the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, spoke recently on the rescheduled Bassmaster Elite Series tournament that took place on the Santee Cooper Lakes in early October.

A total of 85 of the world’s best professional bass anglers who comprise the Elite Series descended on Manning

and Clarendon County for the four-day tournament that was postponed nearly six months from mid-April due to COVID-19.

Various agencies in the county had planned for and won the Bassmaster tourney site in 2019 and didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity for the national exposure, Myers said. Clarendon had not hosted an Elite Series tournament since 2009.

“Bassmaster is a huge brand name,” she said. “It was basically like having a professional football team in our area

competing, if you want to compare it to another sport.”

As host, Clarendon also decided to sponsor one pro angler, Summervillebased Patrick Walters.

Lake Marion of Santee Cooper Lakes is Walters’ home lake, Myers said, and his jersey and boat featured the “Destination Clarendon” logo for the event.

Some observers predicted Walters would win the contest, she said, but he missed a top-10 finish by a tiebreaker.

safety guidelines and protocols as suggested by Bassmaster and implemented by other 2020 host cities, Myers added.

Even though attendance wasn’t encouraged, officials estimate about 1,000 spectators showed up during the four days. Attendees were asked to wear face masks and practice social distancing, she said.

A Bassmaster event typically includes a festival-like atmosphere, but officials decided against that due to COVID-19.

“Out of an abundance of caution with the pandemic, and following examples of

previous Bassmaster events this year,” Myers said, “we decided to forgo the vendors and activities and focus solely on the anglers.”

The event was livestreamed on ESPN3 and Bassmaster.com.

A one-hour highlight show from the tournament will be broadcast later in the year on ESPN2 and ESPN Classic, officials said.

his professional career. With the victory, he earned the top prize of $100,000.

Many anglers said they enjoyed the tournament site, Myers said, and wished the event could have been held in the spring when the fish would have been much larger.

“We want to grant that wish for them sooner, rather than later,” she said.

Pre-COVID-19, the tournament was scheduled for April 16-19 and one week before Clarendon’s annual Striped Bass Festival, which was slated for April 25.

Due to the initial wave of the coronavirus in the spring, the bass festival was canceled for the first time in its history, which dates back to 1980.

Local officials hope April 2021 will be Year No. 41 for the signature event.

“We can’t predict what the future holds,” Myers said. “We can only cross fingers and toes that the pandemic gets under control and we’re able to get back to semi-normal life as usual.”

aving a difficult time finding guns and ammo this hunting season?

You’re not alone. You may be one of the thousands of hunters from across the state who is having the same problem.

Why? There are several reasons.

Second, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a two-fold impact on the availability of both guns and ammunition. The products aren’t available from the manufacturers or distributors, and the number of first-time gun and ammo buyers has increased.

COVID-19 forced many gun and ammo manufacturers to shut down production.

Now that they are back to limited or full production, manufacturers haven’t been able to fill current orders while also filling their back orders.

The increase in the number of firsttime buyers may be a result of the many months spent inside quarantining. Now, people are looking for ways to get out of the house while keeping safe and maintaining social distancing, and they have turned to exploring the great outdoors and hunting.

For those reasons, stores and businesses across South Carolina are seeing a demand for guns and ammo that hasn’t been met

for the past two months. Hunters are even taking to social media to find the guns and ammo they need.

Shawn Matthews, general manager of Simpson Hardware and Sports, said his four stores, one in Manning and three in Sumter, have seen a huge increase in the demand for both guns and ammo.

Matthews said the demand for shotguns and rifles typically picks up before and during deer season.

“It’s a frenzy,” Matthews said. “Right now, guns and ammo are pretty difficult to get. Hunters are wanting ammo that’s not readily available.”

Matthews said that Simpsons' handgun sales are down because they can’t get the guns from the distributors.

He said he’s also seeing shortages in 9mm, 40-caliber and 380 ammo.

it’s tough getting the products, some businesses have bumped up their prices, but we don’t do that,” he added. “For some, it’s all about supply and demand.”

Matthews said that if Simpsons doesn’t have what the customers want, it refers them to another place that might have the product.

“We want to keep our customers happy,” he said.

Matthews said his stores have also seen an increase in other sporting items.

“People have more time to spend on other hobbies like fishing, running and walking,” he said. “We are selling more of those products.”

David Bradham, owner of High Caliber Firearms, 314 E. Boyce St. in Manning, agreed with Matthews.

“There is a shortage of guns and ammo,” Bradham said, “There’s a shortage on handguns, shotguns and rifles.”

Bradham said some manufacturers are only making a limited number of certain caliber guns right now to accommodate the demand.

“With the limited number of guns available or being produced, they may not necessarily be what hunters need,” he said. “We get a product in, and almost immediately it’s gone.”

The many shapes and sizes of a hunting camp

T

he clubhouse was huge, and my first impression was that it was excessive.

I remember thinking, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why do they need such a large building?â&#x20AC;? It was a club work day in early March, and only about a dozen members were there. Mr. Jim met me and my brother Matt at the door. We were introduced to the small group that was gathered around a red-hot wood stove. Deer heads and horns adorned the

walls of the big concrete block building. A large rattlesnake skin was mounted on a board over the closed-in fireplace. Large tables with bench seats filled about half of the room. The tables were covered with old pictures under glass covers. One picture was dated October 1937. A fully functional kitchen stretched across one end. Bunk beds and couches filled the rest of the open space.

Right outside the back door was an artesian well under a shed roof. A screenedin skinning shed and a large generator house were beyond the porch. A detached bathroom and wood shed were nearby.

Across the clubhouse road was a large complex of dog pens and kennels. A boat landing to the river was off to one side.

Campers were parked along the road that followed the river bank.

We spent many nights there, at Buckhead Camp, mostly during the turkey season.

The turkey hunters never turned on the generator. It was too loud. We signed in under lantern light and cooked on a grill.

Dog drives were held every Saturday and holiday during the deer season. The big clubhouse would fill up with expectant hunters, young and old. Mr. Tommy cooked fabulous dinners on most Saturdays. It was, and still is, a special place. I just don’t get there as much anymore.

Before Buckhead, I had held a turkey hunting membership at Goose Bay. The clubhouse there was an old ramshackle sharecropper’s house. There were gaps in the floorboards of a bedroom, where you could see through, like the old timers said, “you could see the chickens walking around under the house.” The walls weren’t

insulated, and there was only one small electric heater that you had to stand right in front of to feel any warmth. I spent many cold nights there in March and April shivering, but it was the best turkey hunting ground I had ever stepped on, so I didn’t worry about the accommodations.

There was a small kitchen and an indoor bathroom. The landowner even installed a satellite TV. The turkeys paid no heed to the clubhouse presence or to any vehicles parked in the

yard. My brother Matt missed a gobbler there one day from the back porch while we were eating lunch. And I accidentally shot the side of the clubhouse one morning when I returned from a hunt. There was a gobbler strutting in the yard that ran when I approached. I shot at the running gobbler, missed him and my truck but hit the building.

I’m in a club now in the High Hills of Sumter County. The clubhouse is in an old block building that was the site of a start-up business. The roof leaked, and there was no heat or air conditioning. Some of the former members parked four-wheelers and sideby-sides inside the clubhouse. We’ve made some changes and added a shower, fixed the roof, added furniture, chairs and bunks.

ATVs are parked under an adjoining shed now. The walls are adorned with signs and pictures. There is a television and gun rack.

It’s homier now and more useful.

Hunting camps come in many shapes and sizes. Some are more modern than others.

I’ve seen camps that were two-story log cabins and some that were crude shacks.

They are all special places for hunters, their friends and family members to gather for the hunt.
