Simpson Hardware & Sporting Goods thankful for loyal customers for nearly 75 years
Simpson Hardware & Sporting Goods is a thirdgeneration, family owned local hardware and sporting goods chain. In the short history of the Best of Clarendon competition, Simpson Hardware has won Best Hardware (including this year), Best Paint (including this year), Best Sporting Goods (including this year), Best Guns/Firearms (including this year), Best Fishing (including this year), Best Men’s Clothing (including this year), Best Fitness (including this year), Best Locally Owned Business three times (in Sumter), Best Shoes (Sumter) and Best Propane (Sumter). Simpson owes any success to our loyal customers and helpful associates. We are so grateful, particularly over the last year in which we have experienced the loss of our father/leader/friend, Carl Simpson III.
Over the years, Simpson has grown to five stores and 180 associates in Sumter, Manning and Lake City. Simpson Hardware Co. was founded in 1951 by the late Carl Simpson Jr. with the purchase of a store in Camden. Several years later, Mr. Simpson moved to Sumter and purchased Boyle Hardware. That store was opened under the Simpson Hardware name on Liberty Street in 1961 and became the first ACE Hardware store in South Carolina. In 1964, a second location opened at Palmetto Plaza on Guignard Drive
under the guidance of Carl Simpson III. That store expanded rapidly and soon became widely known for its sporting goods and lawn and garden departments. However, that location burned to the ground and soon moved to Wesmark Boulevard in 2002. The other three stores in the company are located on North Brooks Street in Manning, Pinewood Road in Sumter and North Church Street in Lake City.
The Manning store moved to its current location in 2014. Prior to that, it had been in the Manning Shopping Center on Rigby Street for over two decades. This destination has become known for providing "legendary customer service," having "something for everyone" and remaining "authentically local." Throughout its history, Simpson has served the community through a pandemic, floods, hurricanes, ice storms…and even new trends. In the coming years, the Simpson Hardware company plans to grow its online presence and businessto-business relationships and improve every retail location. We currently have varied and new products in fishing, hunting, sporting goods, grilling, lawn care, clothing, footwear, gifts, sunglasses, hardware, paint and more. Ellen's Nails is thankful to the community for its continued support
Established in 1997, Ellen and her mother, of Vietnamese descent, decided to embark on a small nail salon located in Manning. For 16 years, the business ran as a walk-in-only salon with the help of multiple nail techs along the way, including her sister Lynda. However, in 2013, with the devastating loss of her mother, Ellen had to create a new way to run her business by taking appointments only.
Eventually, the business grew and continues to be successful. Ellen’s Nails is celebrating its 28th year and offers simple nail services such as full sets, fill-ins, manicures, pedicures and cute nail designs.

It has always been my dream, since I came here when I was 13, to help people improve in the community. Being at Tanners in Manning allows me to send people to work in the morning, home in the evening and to the lake on the weekend with smiles on their faces.
I’ve worked so hard to be able to own my own store to serve Manning, Sumter and the surrounding area with all your fuelup, snack and convenience store needs, and I love talking to all of you every day and seeing your faces come back again and again.
Starting out as an accountant, I always knew I wanted to be in retail. My dream came true in 2010 when I opened my first store in Sumter, and I’ve absolutely loved my time in Manning since opening here seven years ago.
Whether you need gas, bait and tackle, breakfast, lunch or a hot dinner, it is my responsibility to send you away satisfied. Tanners offers a variety of fuel, including regular gas, propane, small-engine fuel and race gas. Our store is packed with anything you’d want fast, from candy and chips to cold
beverages. Our pizza and wings are hot and ready to take out or eat here daily.
We have everything you need for your day on the lake. Come stock up on ice, beer, snacks, fishing supplies and other outdoor gear. The summer holidays are great because I get to meet so many people who I can help stock up for a good time outdoors.
You, the customers, are the most important part of my business. My reliable and caring staff has been here through hurricanes and snow. We have used a generator to provide food and gas knowing others may be out and in need.
With Manning being such a small Southern town, where everyone knows everyone, seeing the same people come back day after day warms my heart.

We would like to thank everyone who voted The Players Course at Wyboo the Best Golf Course in Clarendon for the sixth-consecutive year! We are very thankful and appreciative of this honor. The Players Course was built in 1992 and is nestled along the shores of Lake Marion. This 18-hole championship golf course is perhaps Santee Cooper Country’s most player-friendly layout.
