Welcome

to All About Sumter

Welcome to Sumter County! On behalf of the Sumter County Veterans Affairs Office and the residents of Sumter County, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to our community. Whether you are arriving on active duty, transitioning from military service, beginning a new civilian career or choosing Sumter as the place to retire, we are honored that you have chosen to call Sumter home. Sumter is proudly recognized for its Uncommon Patriotism and unwavering support of those who have worn our nation’s uniform. As the home of Shaw Air Force Base, our community has built a strong tradition of honoring military service through military-friendly neighborhoods, businesses, organizations, schools, churches and civic leaders who understand the value and commitment of our service members and veterans. Sumter County Veterans Affairs Office is proud to serve more than 15,000 veterans throughout the county. Our mission is to ensure that every veteran and eligible family member receives the benefits, services and support they have earned through military service. As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, Sumter County is proud to join communities across the country in commemorating this historic milestone throughout the year. We are partnering with military installations, veteran organizations, civic groups, schools and community leaders to host public displays, educational programs, commemorative ceremonies and patriotic events throughout the year. These activities celebrate our nation’s history while recognizing the extraordinary contributions of our active-duty service members, veterans and military families. Again, welcome to Sumter County. arbecue is an American staple. Along with filling a plate, it has a way of bringing people together, turning meals into gatherings and strangers into family. Every corner of the country has its own take on the tradition, from Texas brisket to Chicago rib tips to Carolina-style pulled pork. And Jerry Coker has put his spin on the cultural classic, dishing up his own take on the Southern staple at Sumter’s The Twisted Pig. Native to Summerton, Coker has expanded operations to Sumter and to include catering. But the heart of the business remains the same: good food, good people and a place where folks can have a good time. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS It all started from humble beginnings. In 2021, Coker, his wife, Amber, and his daughters transformed their flat car trailer to be able to serve barbecue to customers one at a time. It was a natural extension of the years of hard work, faith and service he poured into the Clarendon community. “I’ve been an

entrepreneur most of my life and have always enjoyed building businesses,” he shared. “I wanted to create something my family could be proud of and carry on for generations.” Like any new business, he said, there were challenges and growing pains. The complexity of building a customer base, the long working hours and the struggles that

come with growing from the ground up were far from easy, but the faith in what they were doing carried them through. Before long, their small food trailer allowed the Coker family to expand into surrounding communities serving more people while staying close to the folks that supported their humble beginning.

Pulled pork, hash, brisket, ribs and more www.TheItem.com 7

THE NAME HAS A LITTLE TWIST When opening in Clarendon in 2024, Coker wanted a name people would remember. One that had a ring to it not only for its uniqueness, but also was a preview of what they could expect from their food. “The Twisted Pig” is a nod to the restaurant’s approach to Southern barbecue: take something familiar and give it its own personality. “We wanted something fun, different and memorable that reflected our personality and the food we serve,” he said. The menu follows suit. There

are the barbecue staples that customers expect — pulled pork sandwiches, hearty hash, brisket and ribs. But there are also dishes that show Coker’s willingness to wander outside the lines of the traditional barbecue plate. Take the brisket tacos, topped with coleslaw and nestled in a crispy taco shell — Coker’s personal favorite. And that’s another thing: the brisket. For a first-time customer, Coker doesn’t hesitate in recommending their brisket. The meat is smoked low and slow for hours. This gives it time needed to develop the flavor and tenderness people have come to love and expect. “Many of our menu items are inspired by Southern cooking and the meals we grew up enjoying with family. While we’ve added our own twist over the years, our goal has always been to serve homemade food that reminds people of home,” Coker said. “We don’t rush the process, and I think our customers can taste the difference.” Recommendation from the chef: pair the brisket with mac and cheese, cowboy beans and one of their house-made sauces for the full Twisted Pig experience. THE SECRET INGREDIENT? CONSISTENCY Barbecue requires patience. Customers may see the plate,

piping hot and dripping in sauce, arrive at the table, but they don’t see the hours spent making that happen. “Barbecue has always been something I enjoyed, but over time it became much more than that. I love the process, the patience it takes and seeing people enjoy food that was prepared with care.” Long before the restaurant doors open, the smokers are finishing off their overnight stint to give customers the freshest barbecue possible. In the kitchen, meats are seasoned for the next session in the smoker and the sides are being prepared fresh each day. The Twisted Pig team works six to seven days a week to be open three-and-a-half days. “That’s what it takes to serve quality barbecue every time,” Coker said. “Great barbecue isn’t something you can rush. It takes experience, consistency and a team that takes pride in every plate that leaves the kitchen.” COME FOR THE BARBECUE, LEAVE AS FAMILY Barbecue is often the avenue for building community. But, Coker has found something better: family. “From the beginning, I hoped The Twisted Pig would become a place where people could enjoy great food and feel at home,” he shared. “I wanted customers to leave feeling like family, not just

another customer.” One of the greatest blessings of the business has been the customers who have been with them since 2021. Those friends have become more like family. As for his staff, though Coker may be the name attached to the restaurant, he is the first to say he isn’t doing it alone. One of the people he gives credit to is his general manager, “Tootie.” “She joined our team two years ago, and today she’s family,” he shared. “She works tirelessly at every one of our locations, helps keep everything running smoothly and genuinely cares about our customers and our team.” “We simply couldn’t do what we do without her.” What he and his staff have accomplished in the years since has left Coker in awe. To be a part of people’s day, be it for a meaningful family dinner, a quick lunch or at a catered event, and witnessing the enjoyment their food brings is a reward in itself. THE PIG IS STILL GROWING Though the homemade trailer is gone, Coker is holding true to the values that started it all – and is looking to expand its reach. The plan is to continue growing the restaurant and catering business, while maintaining the consistency, quality and hospitality customers have come to love.

The Summerton location is preparing for several improvements over the next few months to allow for more space and an upgraded experience. The restaurant is also keeping college students fed with its location on Central Carolina Technical College’s campus in Sumter. But no matter how big The Twisted Pig becomes, Coker holds on to one major lesson. “Success doesn’t happen overnight,” he shared. “It takes hard work, consistency and surrounding yourself with good people. Never forget where you started.”

Where Sumter’s past and future meet umter’s history is vast, and it is valuable. And it’ll soon be housed in one place for all to see. Sumter Museum, founded in the historic Williams-Brice House in 1976, explores historical experiences through “diverse programs and engaging exhibits,” inviting everyone to enjoy an experience meant to inform and

14 All About Sumter 2026-2027

shape our future. For 50 years, the museum has expanded to encompass an array of enriching attractions that showcase Sumter’s vibrant heritage, including Carolina Backcountry Homestead, Heritage Education Center and Temple Sinai Jewish History Center. To keep that heritage alive, well and relevant among the county’s community, a new expansion is in progress.

Set to open in 2027, the 36,000-square-foot Sumter Military Museum will become the newest chapter of the museum campus, housing a permanent exhibit honoring local veterans while tracing the county’s legacy from the Revolutionary War through modern conflicts. According to Museum Executive Director Annie Rivers, in one of the museum’s largest interactive

components, visitors will find immersive galleries, interactive exhibits and a chronological history of Sumter that explains how the city earned its reputation for “Uncommon Patriotism.” The museum will also feature a local veteran recognition wall, where photographs will rotate digitally, along with searchable kiosks allowing families to find relatives and learn about their service. Among the museum’s centerpiece artifacts is a restored Bristol F2B Fighter, the same type of World War I aircraft flown by Sumter native 1st Lt. Ervin David Shaw. Constructed largely of wood, canvas and paper with an open cockpit for two, the aircraft offers visitors a glimpse into the earliest days of military aviation. The new structure was made possible through city, county and state funding as well as by the local Williams-Brice-Edwards Charitable Trust, among other groups. The estimated cost is more than $20 million. For Rivers, the building is far more than steel and brick. It fulfills a vision first imagined by Sumter historian and Item archivist Dr. Sammy Way, whose decades spent preserving military memorabilia grew into a collection too large for its original home. “He had an incredible vision to www.TheItem.com 15

create a display honoring our local veterans, and it really grew faster than he had space for, so we are very honored with the opportunity to help preserve that collection and share it with our community for future years,” she expressed. A separate gallery will include the Thomas Sumter Interpretative Center, which focuses on the general’s life before, during and after the Revolutionary War. Renowned American wildlife artist and sculptor Grainger McKoy will also have a dedicated gallery inside the museum to show sculptures, his design process and models of his most beloved pieces displayed in Sumter. Behind the scenes, the new museum houses dedicated collection storage and conservation spaces where every artifact is carefully documented, photographed and preserved using climate controls, specialized shelving and fire protection systems designed to safeguard history itself. It’s meticulous work, often invisible to the public but essential to the museum’s mission. The museum will also rotate exhibits, ensuring each visit offers something new. As visitors and residents await the opening of the new building, the museum hosts a variety of events and programs to engage and educate the public.

FOR ALL Sumter’s entertainment landscape is constantly evolving.

Year after year, investments are being made into spaces where community, culture and creativity can be celebrated. From newly opened neighborhood parks to major renovations of longstanding venues, Sumter has shown commitment to enhancing how residents gather and experience the arts. 18 All About Sumter 2026-2027

SUMTER OPERA HOUSE

The opera house in its present form was built from 1893 to 1895, following the destruction of the first opera house in December 1892 by fire. In 1936, the venue was renovated into a movie theater, costing $120,000 and creating 300 jobs for Depression-era workers. The historic building closed its doors in 1972 after 46 years in operation as a movie theater. City of Sumter purchased the building in 1984, renovating it just in time for the city’s 75th anniversary of its council-manager form of government in 1987. The opera house still houses City Hall and many of the city’s departments and offices, including Sumter City Council chambers. As for its entertainment, the venue is getting a new look.

The opera house entered its long-awaited major renovation phase in 2025 after its Grand Closing Bash on June 13, launching a $15 million, two-year project in August. Construction includes expanding the lobby and entrance, upgrading dressing rooms and backstage areas, connecting the historic venue to the neighboring building at 19 N. Main St., installing new seating and elevators and adding a second-floor balcony lobby overlooking downtown. The art deco proscenium will remain intact. The venue hosted more than 800 events during the past 11 years, welcomed more than 206,000 patrons, logged 8,500 volunteer hours and generated $1.5 million in revenue for the city. Through its YES Program, launched in 2015, more than 30,000 students attended 75 youth scholarship events. While the main stage is closed, limited box office hours and select events will continue during construction. Want to know more? Visit www.sumteroperahouse. com.

PATRIOT HALL

Since opening its doors in 1986 as the cornerstone of Sumter’s Cultural Center, Patriot Hall has served as a vibrant gathering place for the Sumter community. Each year, the venue welcomes nearly 100,000 guests into its event space to host everything from grand productions and art exhibitions to weddings, business meetings, concerts and community celebrations. After a brief period of being closed, Patriot Hall reopened in August 2025 following a $5.3 million renovation, funded through a combination of state appropriations, American Rescue Plan Act funding and county money. Renovations focused primarily on the auditorium, including new seating, ADA-

accessible spaces, a motorized stage lift, upgraded sound and lighting systems and a large video wall. Additional updates included refreshed dressing rooms and a redesigned interior color scheme. Veleda Sigler, assistant Recreation and Parks director for Sumter County, said the upgrades allow the venue to better accommodate a wider range of performances and audiences, serving as a premier venue for performances of all standards. SUMTER COUNTY GALLERY OF ART

Sumter County Gallery of Art serves to present and promote the visual arts, increase the knowledge and appreciation thereof and provide visual art and art education opportunities to Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties. While in its fourth year of existence, the Sumter Artists Guild planned and fundraised to open a local art gallery in which members could display their work. The Sumter Gallery of Art opened its doors in January 1970 in the old Carnegie Library on Liberty Street, with the school district agreeing to lease the building for $1 per year. In 1977, the gallery moved to an antebellum Greek-revival style home on North Main Street, built in 1850 by Dr. Anthony White. His granddaughter, Elizabeth White, became one of Sumter’s most talented artists and went on to gain national and international recognition. Upon her death in 1976,

White requested that her home be made “available to the public in a manner that will promote the arts.” The house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remained the gallery’s home for the next 26 years. By the mid-1980s, after Sumter County renovated a portion of the former Edmunds High School into Patriot Hall, it was suggested that the adjacent science wing be converted into a new home for the gallery. Sumter Gallery of Art opened its doors to the public in February 2003 in the newly renovated, twostory, 24,000-square-foot facility at Sumter County Cultural Center. Today, the gallery has three exhibition galleries downstairs, a gift shop full of one-of-a-kind treasures and seven upstairs classrooms for the Elizabeth White School of Arts. Plan a visit. Longtime

business leads in local custom countertops

Walton Countertops opened in 1993 Wade Walton will tell you there are many details involved in the countertop business between initially cutting the stone from a slab to the finished product of a high-quality countertop in someone’s home. A Sumter native, Walton owns Walton Countertops and has come a long way in his 30-plus-year career from starting his craft in a small shop behind his parents’ house here to becoming the leader locally in the custom countertops business now with a 26,000-square-foot facility. His family was in the home construction business, he said, and in his early 20s, Walton “fell into” the countertop trade in the early 1990s and started making and installing lower-end

22 All About Sumter 2026-2027

laminate (Formica) countertops, which were still popular in homes. In 1993, he officially established Walton Countertops. After about four to five years and steady business growth, Walton added granite to his operation, and the natural stone “took over the market” as the price for it came down, he said. He then phased out lower-end materials and added other natural stones – such as

marble – and also quartz with the granite for his current material line. Through the years, his business line has become custom-niche countertops with a focus on quality and not necessarily volume production. The business is doing less marble now, Walton said, because of durability concerns. “You want something in your kitchen

KEYS TO SUCCESS

In business for more than 30 years now, Walton said that customer service is the key to success and making every effort to please the customer. He added that happy customers and building a solid reputation are the most satisfying parts of the work. “‘Happy customers that spread the word’ – that’s what I tell people all the time,” Walton said. “We might not be able to please you, but we are going to try.”

that has the look you want but also the durability,” he said. “That’s how quartz came about. Quartz has the natural stone look but is often more durable than your natural stone.” Walton added when he first started in the ’90s there was essentially no one locally doing higher-end countertops. It was mainly countertop companies based in Columbia, Myrtle Beach and Charleston that came into the local area to do the custom-niche countertops. Now, Walton’s operation is essentially similar in that Sumter is his base market and he and his staff extend out to about a two-hour radius to include Columbia, Charleston, Beaufort, Myrtle Beach and Florence with the same higher-end material line, he said. Walton’s son, Cole, serves as a project manager under him along with another Sumter native, Briggs Aycock. Walton Countertops has about 18 employees. The business is evenly split between

remodeling projects and new construction with local spec home builders – short for speculative – and custom home builders. Those local builders include Gainey Construction, Dyson Construction, Banjo Construction, Bailey Construction, Berry Construction and Aycock Construction, among others. Custom countertop installations are done in kitchens (both indoor and outdoor), bathrooms, laundry rooms, wet bars and islands in other parts of the home, Walton said. “If it needs a countertop, we will put it on,” Cole Walton said. Custom jobs can range in size from smaller scale up to larger kitchen islands.

OPEN CARRY As of March 7, 2024, any adult age 18 or older who can legally own a gun can now carry one openly in South Carolina. There are no restrictions as to where a firearm can be stored inside a vehicle. Concealed weapons permits are still available, and training is free across the state. The law provides stiffer penalties for people who repeatedly carry guns in places where they are still banned, like schools or courthouses, or commit crimes while armed, whether they use the weapon or not. The penalties can be enhanced if the offender doesn’t have a concealed weapons permit. South Carolina joined 28 other states that allow open carry of guns without a permit, including nearly every state in the Deep South.

Public art beautifies A city and uplifts its people

Sumter’s soaring arts scene

S

umter is alive with a vibrant surge of creativity, from public art flowing through the community featuring whimsical community-painted butterflies fluttering across downtown to stunning murals commissioned by talented artists to a cultural renaissance being brought about by a new art park and the expansion of a community art studio. The continued investment in public art and the creative spaces that produce it allows creativity to remain a cultural centerpiece of community life.

MURALS The “Creative Canvas Project” was Sumter’s first dip into public art in 2021. Created by Melanie Colclough, former executive director of Sumter County Cultural Center, the project was designed to support creativity, preserve landmarks and cultural history and uplift moods throughout Sumter. The Historic Preservation Design Review Committee unanimously approved the installation of eight large-scale murals throughout the Downtown Design District. The selected artists were paid using a $50,000 grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Connected Communities as well as

private investments from Bank of Clarendon, Main Street Society, Sumter Community Foundation, which donated murals on Manning Avenue, Sumter County Museum, Sumter Economic Development, Sumter County Gallery of Art and Sumter County Cultural Commission. Only five murals were completed, three less than the approved eight and one less than the project committee’s planned six, because of underestimated costs. Nonetheless, the completed murals hit the mark in revitalizing beloved landmarks throughout Sumter.

ART CONTINUES TO BLOOM South Sumter Art Park Mural A continuation of Sumter’s push for public art came as a backdrop for a place to play. In December 2024, South Sumter Art Park opened its gates at 645 Manning Ave. As part of the park’s transformation from a former substation for Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, a brick wall was utilized as the canvas for a collaborative mural by four local artists — Marie Grady, Walter McNeil, Ernest Hampton and Rosetta Davis — which celebrates South Sumter’s cultural identity. The artwork highlights themes of creativity, faith and optimism, some of the key values and lived experiences that define the community. The mural installation was supported through a collaborative

effort involving City of Sumter and state and local partners, with primary funding provided by South Carolina Arts Commission and Williams-Brice-Edwards Charitable Trust.

Confectionary & Co. Mural A new addition to the public art scene came in 2025 at 13 E. Hampton St. Created by artists Jesse McCoy and Heidi Adler, the mural was commissioned for the newly opened Confectionary and Co. The artwork blends realism and illustration, featuring wildlife — from bees, bluejays and butterflies to breathtaking blooms of flora — with whimsical pastries inspired by the confectionary’s interior design. The installation took an estimated six weeks to complete. Its artists, McCoy and Alder, are more than co-artists. McCoy,

a native of Sumter, is a former student of Adler. The pair were reunited to work on this piece, utilizing McCoy’s eye for realistic wildlife paintings and Adler’s instinct to play with color for an added charm to creative pieces.

Still to come

On Jan. 1, 2026, South Sumter Advocates, a group of community members and local leaders who represent South Sumter and the surrounding Sumter area, announced a second large-scale mural installation, titled H.Y.P.E. Art Mural Wall Project, and a walkable heritage park will be coming to Manning Avenue. These are two of five revitalization projects set to happen along Manning Avenue throughout 2026.

City of Sumter sought to revitalize downtown Sumter for more than two decades. One way to do so was to give it some color. 36 All About Sumter 2026-2027

The best gems are often hidden in plain sight.

rom the outside, J. O’Gradys Sports Bar & Grill looks like a neighborhood spot to grab a burger, catch the game and meet up with friends after work. But when you step inside, you’ll find a treasure trove of Sumter’s sports legacy. Tucked among the televisions, booths and barstools is a living collection of Sumter’s sports history. Jerseys once worn under Friday night lights, photographs of hometown greats and decades of memories line the walls, turning the restaurant into equal parts sports bar, museum and community gathering place. A lifelong sports fan, Scott Estep opened J. O’Gradys to honor his late mentor, Jack Doyle. A professor at USC Sumter, he was one of the people who influenced Estep the most. Known for his gift of storytelling, Doyle often shared tales of an Irish pub called O’Gradys, each story being lent an Irish accent and charm to make listeners feel as though they pulled up a stool themselves. After Doyle passed, Estep named the restaurant in his honor, with the “J” standing for Jack. The warm wood finishes, inviting layout and lively atmosphere bring the Irish pub inspiration to life. The space is equally suited for family dinner, watching the big game or debriefing from a long day of work with good company. The menu leans into classic pub favorites with a local twist. Guests can choose from handcrafted burgers, tacos, sandwiches, fresh salads and shareable appetizers. The charm is that these items are named after local greats who have left their mark on the community.

Be it the Sammy’s Way, named after local historian, Award of Merit recipient and beloved coach Sammy Way, that comes stacked with lettuce,

tomato and bacon while delivering a twist of sweet and spicy, courtesy of the grilled pineapple, teriyaki glaze and Monterey Jack cheese or the BR-K55 Fall Classic, named after former New York Yankees second baseman and treasured Sumterite Bobby Richardson’s K-55 model bat. The burger comes packed with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, cheddar cheese, mayo, ketchup and mustard. Not feeling a burger? You can try NFL player and Sumterite Dexter Davis’ Seared Yellow Fin Salad or

Buddy Ward’s Sweet Pulled Pork Tacos. The menu is filled with familiar names and fond memories, giving each dish a dose of Sumter pride. While the food keeps people coming back, it’s often the walls that capture their attention first. J.O’Gradys is home to the Sumter County Sports Hall of Fame, where nearly every inch of the wall space celebrates the athletes, coaches and teams that have left their mark on the community. From framed photographs, jerseys, gloves and helmet, the collection includes keepsakes honoring Sumter past pioneers – from Richardson’s legendary run in the major leagues to NFL great Freddie Solomon — to the present-day trailblazers like World Series champion Jordan Montgomery and NBA star guard Ja Morant, and other hometown athletes who found success at the collegiate and professional levels before giving back to the community that first cheered them on. Many of the items are one-of-a-kind gifts entrusted to Estep by athletes, their families or close friends. For longtime residents, every wall sparks a memory that leads to a fond trip down memory lane. For first-time visitors, it’s an introduction to the people, places and moments that helped define Sumter. The stories stay with you, long after the last bite. www.TheItem.com 37

Not your computer’s mahjong: Lady Bird Mahj opens with community in mind

38 All About Sumter 2026-2027

A

t first glance, the tables set with colorful tiles might seem overwhelming. As Christi and Lucy Mahon teach an introductory mahjong class, words like “crak” and “bam” and “Charleston” — not the place — fill the air. During the course of two hours, though, the students learn the basics of the game and, most importantly, how to win. Lady Bird Mahjong opened Thanksgiving weekend of 2025. Christi, the owner, learned to play the tabletop game earlier this year, and she knew from the beginning that it was important to her. “I bought my entire first set of tiles, racks, a mat, everything before I had even played one game,” she

said, “just because I knew I was gonna love it.” And because of that? She went all in, she said, and brought the store to life quickly. Within just a few months of having the idea, the doors were open. The similarity with the computer game (that one’s full name is mahjong solitaire) ends with the tiles. In the real-life mahjong game, players use a scorecard to create lines of winning tiles. You can play with up to three other people or just one friend. It’s important to note that this is American mahjong, which is different from Chinese mahjong. Christi likens the tabletop mahjong to gin rummy. It’s a social game at its core, which she points to as part of its appeal. “I think I just love the community of it,” she said. “I love that there is etiquette to the game; there are little nuances that just make it really special, and I love that it is a game that anybody can play — any age can play.” Visit the shop at 24B S. Wise Drive. If you’d like to sign up for an introductory class, find Lady Bird Mahj either on Facebook or Instagram (@ladybirdmahj) for information about the next one.

Swan Lake Iris Gardens A Sumter-themed souvenir shop and a garden with ‘chocolaty’ fragrances are part of the public park

Did you know?

Swan Lake Iris Gardens also has a nursery area – not open to the public – that grows an estimated 35,000 plants and flowers annually that are dispersed around the gardens, City of Sumter parks, entryway areas to Sumter and as part of arrangements in the downtown area.

BUY A STUFFED SWAN OR KEEPSAKE ORNAMENT Swan Lake Iris Gardens is by no means a hidden gem locally, but there are at least a couple features of the public park and botanical garden that might not be known by many. Here we look at Swan Lake’s

souvenir shop, offering various collectibles that are all things Sumter related, and the park’s Chocolate Garden, where everything smells “chocolaty” or looks like the beloved sweet creation.

SWAN LAKE SOUVENIR SHOP

Iris

Market

HOURS:

Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed weekends

Located in what was formerly a café that offered ice cream and snacks, the Iris Market is near the end of the parking lot on the main side of the park and offers Swan Lake- and Sumter-based souvenirs. Stuffed animals of the park’s creature community are popular sales items and – of course – there are stuffed swans. “The swans are a relatively new item because it can be actually hard to find stuffed swans, and they go fast,” City of Sumter Tourism Specialist Marc Engle said. Two varieties – or species – are generally available. One is the Black Australian swan, which generally has the largest swan

population at the lake. The other is the Royal Mute, generally the second-most populous species at Swan Lake Iris Gardens. Mutes are considered “majestic swans” because they form picture-perfect hearts with their necks when they swim close to each other during mating season. Other popular items in the shop include the City of Sumter’s annual commemorative Christmas ornaments that date back more than 20 years. Other ornaments also do well, including one of a Carolina wren, which is the Palmetto State’s official bird. Swan Lake- and Sumter-themed hats, visors, T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts or “hoodies,” coffee mugs, tumblers, coasters and www.TheItem.com 41

kids’ toys are also available. A popular T-shirt for youngsters is a yellow-based duck shirt, Engle added. “We actually ended up ordering adult ones because the adults wanted them, too,” he said. Swan Lake- and Sumter-based postcards are also sold at the shop. “One of the things that people say that they cannot find anywhere else anymore are the local postcards, so we make sure that we have them stocked,” Engle added. “In general, we try to get specific items that are not available someplace else.” Other unique items offered include “Sumter-opoly,” which is a Sumter-based version of the traditional Monopoly game, with local landmarks such as Liberty Street and Skate Station. Also don’t miss checking out the Sumter jewelry on display to include Shaw Air Force Base F-16 jet earrings. There are two versions of the earrings – a mirrored version and a black-and-white version. Most store items can be purchased for $20 or less. The local souvenirs were previously housed in Sumter’s Visitors’ Center at Swan Lake before moving to the nearby Iris Market.

THE CHOCOLATE GARDEN

Established in 2009, all the plants and flowers in the Chocolate Garden smell like chocolate or look like chocolate colors, according to visitors’ center Coordinator Brooke Crytser. A vegetable area grows chocolate tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, but visitors are not allowed to pick and sample the items. The garden also contains flowers that smell “chocolaty,” such as the Chocolate Daisy, Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Cosmos, she added. “The garden area is nice and peaceful,” Crytser said. “There is a chocolate fragrance in the garden, and in the spring, the garden gives off its best fragrance. The Sumter Master Gardeners maintain the garden, and they keep it all year. So, it doesn’t matter, even if you come in December, there is going to be something to look at out here that’s pretty, colorful and with some variety.” Something that you can taste in the area is the figs that grow on the small trees. They taste sweet – we tried one – but only eat the middle when you open it, not the outside portion, Crytser said. We took her word on that part.

MORE THAN

A CUP OF Sarah’s Southern Tea Room

W

44 All About Sumter 2026-2027

SERVES AN EXPERIENCE

alking into Sarah’s Southern Tea Room feels like stepping into a cozy country cottage. Flowers adorn every corner, while the gentle sound of violins and pianoforte music transports guests into the pages of a Jane Austen novel, or perhaps the drawing room of a “Bridgerton” estate. Glass cases display well-loved books and antique teapots, including one that doubles as a music box. Delicate saucers sit on metal stands, teacups hang from tiny hooks, and oversized sun hats decorated with ribbons and bows are available for guests who want to add a touch of elegance to their visit. Every detail is carefully chosen, but the experience truly comes together at the table. Floral tablecloths, serving platters, sugar cubes and miniature tongs set the scene for afternoon tea,

while menus offer a variety of black teas, rooibos, flavored green teas and herbal fruit teas, including favorites like Lemon Cake, Blueberry and Apple Spice. While tea is at the heart of Sarah’s Southern Tea Room, owner Catina Hampton says the experience is about much more than the drink itself. “The tea room is built around the afternoon tea experience, not simply drinking tea in the afternoon,” Hampton says. The tradition of afternoon tea began in 19th-century England as a light meal between lunch and dinner before becoming a social gathering centered on conversation and hospitality. Hampton brings that tradition to Sumter through tiered trays filled with finger sandwiches, fresh-baked scones, desserts and tea. The menu changes every two

weeks, but Hampton’s homemade cucumber and chicken salad sandwiches remain staples, she said. Desserts and scones are made from scratch, with the exception of macarons sourced from Hannah Bakers in Sumter. Beyond afternoon tea, the business has grown to include catering, themed events and live entertainment. Sarah’s Southern Tea Room has hosted everything from a “Bridgerton”-inspired Mother’s Day Gala to concerts and Sunday worship events. However, the tea room’s story began long before its doors opened. Hampton started by hosting private tea parties at her home before opening her first location on East Calhoun Street in 2024 and later moving to Broad Street. Her inspiration came after her daughter experienced afternoon tea during a trip to London and shared the tradition with her. Hampton began researching tea rooms and quickly became drawn to their focus on hospitality. “I just fell in love with the hospitality-driven aspect of them,” Hampton said.

That love of hosting was shaped by Hampton’s grandmother, who inspired her through the gatherings she organized and the welcoming atmosphere she created for her guests. That same sense of family is reflected in the tea room’s name, honoring Hampton’s mother and her two grandmothers, all named Sarah. She describes them as “the first three women who loved me,” a sentiment reflected in the warmth guests experience when they walk through the door. “Most people think it’s about the tea, but I do this because I love my community,” Hampton said. “I’m not much of a tea drinker, to be honest. I prefer coffee. But hosting and event planning have always been second nature to me.” That commitment to community has helped the business grow. Despite being told that a tea room might not succeed in Sumter, Hampton chose to start small and has received strong local support. Now, she hopes to expand into Rock Hill and eventually franchise Sarah’s Southern Tea Room. But regardless of how much the business grows, her goal remains the same: creating a place where guests feel like family. Visitors can enjoy Sarah’s Southern Tea Room throughout the week, with lunch service available Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Afternoon tea is offered Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. and requires reservations. The tea room is closed Monday and Tuesday.

s ’ 5 P-1 Sumter’s l l a b t f o s e l t i t e t a st

Sumter Post 15 is no stranger to hosting excellent teams in American Legion athletics. Sumter boasts the second-oldest American Legion baseball program in the country, the P-15’s, and they’ve won a ton of ball games since their first summer on the diamond in 1929. They won their first state title in 1940 under John J. Riley, whose legacy continues with the P-15’s home ballpark, Riley Park. The park has since hosted multiple minor league baseball programs, most recently the Sumter Braves from 1985-1990. But since that initial title, the P-15’s have been a staple program in the state, claiming 14 state titles. Nine of those state championships came under the leadership of

46 All About Sumter 2026-2027

Wallie Jones. He led Sumter to their most recent title in 2010. While Post 15 has a deep and rich baseball history, it has since added another sport to the mix. South Carolina American Legion added softball in 2021 before officially being sanctioned as a statewide program in 2022. Since the beginning of the league, Sumter’s Post 15 Lady Legends have been a premier program, and they finally added some hardware this summer to back it up. The Lady Legends played in the league’s first state championship and its most recent. The program, led by Glenn Posey since its inception, put together a superb summer on the diamond, going

POST 15 BY THE NUMBERS • 15-2 overall record for the Lady Legends • 2026 American Legion Softball State Champions • 17-3 championship game victory over Anderson • .432 team batting average • 14 American Legion Baseball State Championships • 1929 First season of Sumter Post 15 baseball • 1940 First baseball state championship • 9 baseball state titles won under legendary coach Wallie Jones www.TheItem.com 47

15-2 en route to their first title. On Monday, July 20, they traveled to Columbia to face Anderson in a rematch of the 2025 state championship, which Sumter narrowly lost 5-2 for their only defeat of the summer. This time around, Post 15 would not be denied, pummeling Anderson 17-3 for their first title. Sumter’s championship run was powered by a truly sensational offense. As a team, they hit .432 and had four players hit at least .500. Lyza Prickelmyer, fresh off leading Laurence Manning to their third consecutive SCISA 4A state softball championship, led the way with a .528 batting average while also slugging .889. Mandy Wells, who was an All-Region shortstop during her freshman season at Florence-Darlington Technical College, added a .526 average and led the team with nine extra base hits. Ariana Evans, who was an NJCAA All-American during her freshman season at USC Union, hit .523 and led the team with 25 runs scored. Prickelmyer and Evans also stole double-digit bags, swiping 13 and 12 bases, respectively. Post 15 supported that offense with arguably the deepest pitching staff in the league. Calli Yount pitched to a .97 ERA across 29 innings with 28 strikeouts. Lillie Ivey pitched to a 1.52 ERA across 23 innings with 22 punchouts while leading the team in WHIP (Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched) with .739. Marsha Kate Skey had an immaculate .47 ERA across 15 innings. This was the final summer of eligibility for Yount, Wells and Evans, but Post 15 has a strong young core coming up behind them with the likes of rising

48 All About Sumter 2026-2027

sophomores Kendall Tanner and Tatiana Erichsen supporting a large group of rising high school seniors and recent graduates who retain eligibility. While it was a superb summer for Post 15 in softball, the P-15’s were still no slouches. Sumter won their first league title since 2023, holding off a late push from Richland Post 215 for the League 2 championship with a record of 9-7. While they slipped at the end of the regular season with a four-game losing streak, Post 15 bounced back to sweep their cross-county rivals from Manning-Santee Post 68 to open the SCALB postseason, punching their tickets to the state tournament. Ultimately, the P-15’s fell short of a state title, dropping a pitching duel with Easley 2-0 before a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Rock Hill in their first two games of the state tournament, ending their run. The Sumter Junior P-15’s also had a superb summer at the AAA level. They were runners-up to Florence Post 1 in a stacked Pee Dee League, finishing with matching 15-4 records overall, while Florence snagged two more league wins. The Junior P-15’s then rolled through the postseason, beating Aynor in a play-in game before sweeping Horry 7-2, 14-0. They opened the state tournament with an 8-4 win over Richland before a tough 10-0 loss to Florence bumped them into the consolation bracket. They recovered with an 11-6 win over Fort Mill in the blistering heat on Friday, July 17, but ran out of gas against eventual AAA state champion Lexington, falling 18-4.
