For Kia Smith, baking has always been about more than sugar and flour. It’s about connection. As the heart behind Sweet Success Bakery and Sumter School District’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, her mission is simple: use sweetness to strengthen community ties and bring people together, one bite at a time.
Sumter’s food scene is getting a flavor upgrade, thanks to a wave of new spots putting their own spin on classics and homegrown staples. Having opened between 2024-2025, these eateries are carving out their own place as a signature taste of Sumter, one bite at a time.
If Kia Smith knows one thing, it’s sugar, spice and how to make it beautiful.
What lies beyond the vibrant pink door of Sweet Success Bakery is the rich scent of fresh-baked red velvet treats, the sparkle of beautifully piped cupcakes and a case lined with treats that could double as art.
But before Smith became known for decadent cakes and picture-perfect pastries, the Sumter native was just a curious kid in her grandmother’s kitchen, getting first dibs on trying all the sweet and savory creations her grandmother made.
“My favorite was always the Funfetti cake. I never cared if it was from a box — it was something about those sprinkles,” Smith said warmly as she reminisced.
That love for Funfetti and creating culinary experiences through dishes and desserts would follow her through high school, leading her to enroll in Sumter Career and Technology Center’s two-year culinary arts program before going off to Johnson & Wales University to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Food Service Management and Associate Degree in Baking and Pastry. Smith would spend some time

Her former high school culinary arts teacher called to inform Smith of her retirement — and offer her the opportunity to fill her shoes. Smith applied
For the past 11 years, she has taught full-time at her old stomping ground, guiding the next generation of bakers and chefs. That guidance wouldn’t go unnoticed, as Smith was named 2025 Teacher of the Year for Sumter School District. It would be within her decade of teaching that she stepped outside her comfort zone into her calling. Founded in 2024, Sweet Success Bakery grew out of that passion for teaching and her desire to create a space where both her own creations and those of other local artisans and entrepreneurs could shine. During the summer, she runs the shop solo, prepping and baking before sunrise to fill her cases with everything from gluten-free chocolate chip cookies to gourmet brownies and everything your sweet tooth could crave. When the school year starts, the bakery transforms into a collaborative hub with her students coming in to lend a hand — be it behind the counter or at the mixing bowl.
It’s the red velvet that keeps people coming back. Moist, rich and just the right balance of cocoa and velvety smooth icing. There is enough depth without overpowering one’s palate — it’s sweet enough
to be indulgent yet light enough to keep you from feeling weighed down.
She also leaves space for local artisans and entrepreneurs, with shelves and displays for specialty nuts, pork skins, fruit parfaits and much more. Supporting other small businesses is a key component of her platform.
“Sumter’s big, but Sumter is small. There is no reason why we’re not all working together,” Smith expressed. “I love, love, love working with the community.”
On any given day — or according to her events schedule on the wall — the shop might be filled with the chatter of regulars, the quiet focus of children decorating a cupcake or the excitement of a parent picking up a custom-made cake for their little one’s birthday. Whatever the occasion or celebration may be, the feeling of community is what Smith is committed to creating. And that connection stays with customers long after the last crumb is gone.
For Smith, the bakery is as much about people as it is about pastries. She sees Sweet Success as a gathering place, a space where local talent can be celebrated alongside her own creations. Each cupcake, cookie and cake carries a piece of her story and those of the community around her. And when side by side, it’s a reminder that life tastes better when shared — that may be the sweetest success of all.
Boston
Roast Beef and Pizza is a new option for Greek and Italian food lovers in Sumter.
At 110 W. Wesmark Blvd. near Simpson Hardware and Sporting Goods in the center of town, the new restaurant opened in May.
Brothers Yianni and Andrew Hantzopoulos co-own the business and customer favorites are the pizza and roast beef sandwiches, they said.
The brothers are from northern Massachusetts, and the roast beef sandwiches are done in that “North Shore” region style with a specialty barbecue sauce called James River that is sold almost exclusively in the area, Yianni Hantzopoulos said.
They roast the beef themselves, cook it medium rare and it is sliced thin, he added. The sandwiches come in three sizes – junior, big and super.
A popular and traditional way to eat the sandwiches is with the barbecue sauce, white American cheese and mayonnaise, Hantzopoulos said.
Pizza sizes are small (10 inches), medium (12 inches) and large (16 inches) with numerous toppings available to “build your own.” The Boston Su-
preme and Meat Lovers pizzas have been the bestsellers to date, he added. The Supreme comes with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground hamburger, imported ham, Genoa salami and other items.
The pasta dishes are also popular on the menu and are made with the brothers’ own Alfredo sauce, Hantzopoulos said. Chicken, steak or shrimp with broccoli are different options. Pasta options are spaghetti and ziti.
Back home up north, their father, Tony, and mom operate a similar style restaurant, and he has been their inspiration. The restaurant in Salem, Massachusetts, was family owned and operated.
In their first few months of operation here, Hantzopoulos said, business has been “very strong.”
Customer Jennifer Geddings has been a couple times and said she has been pleased.
“The food has been great, and I am pleased with the portion sizes,” she said. “All of us are taking leftovers home, so that tells how much it was.”
Wakita Jacobs added that the staff is friendly and accommodating.

Both said they plan to return. The spot at the end of the strip plaza has plenty of dining space inside, and in the initial months the brothers set up seating for 40 but said they may expand the seating.
The 110 W. Wesmark Blvd. location has always been a restaurant, Hantzopoulos said. Previously it was Country Boys barbecue restaurant and also Lucky Corner Chinese restaurant.
Owner Sam Lowery thinks there is a science to making biscuits, which are the staple item at his restaurant.
On Miller Road near the Sumter YMCA, Sam’s Homemade Biscuits serves up at least 25 different kinds of biscuits to include chicken, steak, sausage, country ham, blueberry, jalapeno cheddar, cinnamon and raisin, cobbler-topped biscuits and even a homemade barbecue biscuit, which is sold on Fridays and Saturdays.
“It took me about five years to get my biscuit recipe together, and it’s totally different than most places,” he said. “The difference is love. You have to care about what you are doing. Older people go by texture and feel, and I go by texture and feel a lot. I can tell if I leave something out, and if I do, then I discard it and start all over again. If I feel something is not right, then I say, ‘No, I can’t serve this to the cus-
His biscuits are so soft that if you hold them down, they will spring back up, Lowery added. And if you leave them on the counter overnight, they will still be soft.
The menu’s breakfast items include the biscuits, grits and pancakes. Lunch items are three types of fish (catfish, whiting and flounder) and chicken tenders. Breakfast is served all day.
He said his French fries are freshly cut each day, and his chicken comes in fresh, not frozen.
Customer favorites include flounder and grits, the chicken biscuit and the cobblers, he added.
The restaurant offers eat in or take out, and a drive-through lane opened in August. Catering is also available.
Lowery said his Grandma was a great cook, his inspiration and got him interested in the restaurant business and especially biscuits.
Sam’s Biscuits opened in February 2025, and Lowery said the community is catching on to it.
Mason Davis, 13, said it is his favorite restaurant that he has ever been to.
“It’s so good, and the people who work here are so nice,” Davis said. “I come as much as I can. My favorites are the sweet tea and the chicken biscuit.”
Frankie Kennedy added that he really likes the steak biscuit.
“It’s rather tasty,” he said. “The biscuit is nice and soft, and the steak is soft and juicy, and also the sweet tea is good.”

Founded in 2017, the Sumter Farmers Market offers local farmers, artisans, bakers, food trucks and other vendors without a storefront a venue to sell their products directly to the consumer. Produce farmers grow at least 75-80% of what they sell, and livestock farmers humanely raise their animals on pasture with no antibiotics or added growth hormones. The market is governed by its own board and held weekly on Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. from April 1 through Nov. 18.

2 S. Artillery Drive
Open on Fridays from noon to 5 p.m., this market offers fresh produce, locally raised meat products, crafts and gift items and ready-to-eat food. The best part? It’s inside a building on the American Legion and county fairgrounds, so it can stay open yearround.

BBultman Drive in Sumter has a history rooted in the Bultman family, who were prominent businessmen and community figures in the area. The street is named in honor of Deuward Bultman, who successfully operated a grocery store (Ducker & Bultman) from circa 1876 until 1961. This store was one of the last locally owned grocery stores in Sumter to take orders by phone and deliver to homes.
The Bultman family’s presence in Sumter dates to the 1870s, when brothers (immigrants from Hanover, Germany) established a successful boot and shoe business. They built a large storefront building on Main Street in 1882, which became a landmark of Sumter’s historic commercial district. In addition to their business ventures, the Bultman family was
instrumental in establishing St. James Lutheran Church in 1890.
Essentially, Bultman Drive is a significant roadway in Sumter, named after a family who played a crucial role in the city’s commercial and community history. The Bultmans were instrumental in establishing Ducker and Bultman Inc., one of the oldest grocery stores in this area. Established in 1876 by D.W.A. Bultman and George Ducker, the store completely satisfied its customers, managing a complete line of groceries, meats, fruits, seeds, feeds, fertilizers and practically all goods that might be sold in a grocery store.
Properties around Bultman Drive experienced rapid growth after the new street was completed, merging with Broad Street. Through the years, several businesses have been located on or near Bultman Drive, including Cole’s Restaurant, Wal-Mart and Kroger SavOn grocery store. A 37-unit, multi-family residential apartment complex was constructed at 265 N. Bultman Drive.
Sumter Museum, founded in the historic Williams-Brice House, explores historical experiences through “diverse programs and engaging exhibits,” inviting everyone to enjoy an experience meant to inform and shape our future. The museum has expanded to encompass an array of enriching attractions that showcase Sumter’s vibrant heritage.
To keep that heritage alive, well and relevant among the county’s community, an expansion is in progress.
The 35,000-square-foot expansion will feature artifacts from Sumter historian and The Sumter Item archivist Sammy Way’s military museum, currently housed at 129 S. Harvin St., as well as Sumter Museum’s military memorabilia. There will be dedicated exhibits to major wars and other topics related to Sumter,
Shaw Air Force Base, Third Army and more. Museum Executive Director Annie Rivers shared a separate wing of the facility will be devoted to local history stories to provide context to visitors on who Sumter is and what it’s all about, all to understand why Sumter is so “uncommonly patriotic,” from a broad look at the area’s involvement in the American Revolution and Civil War to Sumter’s cultural history and life stories of the area’s namesake with the Thomas Sumter Interpretative Center.

The museum will also be home to a Grainger McKoy exhibit showcasing his work and artistic process, as well as a new Gamecock feather sculpture of his creation to be placed outside the building.
The new space, which will be an expansion of Sumter Museum, was possible through city, county and state funding as well as by the local Williams-Brice-Edwards Charitable Trust, among other groups. The estimated cost is $20+ million, and it is scheduled to be completed in spring 2026 with the space projected
to open at the end of that year, according to Rivers.
As the expansion continues to take shape, hammers continue to nail and drywall goes up, history enthusiasts can still take a trip to the past at any of the museum’s four facilities — Williams-Brice House, Carolina Backcountry Homestead, Heritage Education Center and Temple Sinai Jewish History Center — with events and exhibits happening throughout the year.
Where global flavors meet Southern charm — one taste, one gift and one story at a time
Step inside Lorine Olive Oil, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by international taste you can try at a local pace. It’s where rich, refined flavors of olives from around the globe are paired with the friendly, familiar pace of a hometown shop.
It’s here you can explore the world through your palate without ever leaving Sumter and still get home in time to set the table.
Pronounced luh-REEN Olive Oil, the store’s name honors owner Julie Griffin’s late mother-in-law, whose middle name was Lorine. Griffin and her husband saved the name, in hopes of keeping the legacy alive through a daughter. After giving birth to two boys, the couple decided to bestow the name upon their small business, creating a new legacy that would reflect the warmth and care of its namesake.
Six years ago, Griffin and her sister were in the thick of promoting their clothing boutique, Swaddle and Swag. It would be selling boutique goodies at a holiday market in Greenville, S.C., where Griffin met a woman selling premium olive oils and vinegars. Knowing little at the time of what differed between the premium products and store-bought competitors, after just one taste of the merchandise, Griffin was hooked.
“I probably spent everything I earned in that show on [olive] oils and vinegars,” Griffin said with a laugh.
She suggested the owner set up shop in their boutique on Bultman Drive. The owner declined, following it up with “but I will show you everything you need to do to start your own store.”
The knowledge was acquired, the connections were made, the products were ordered, and fustis — or keg-like dispensers — were set up. Before long, Lorine Olive Oil opened for business in 2020.
The shelves at Lorine Olive Oil read like a passport for your palate. From Italy, Portugal, Spain and even Chile, Griffin sources ultra-premium olive oils with no fillers, no shortcuts or no artificial flavors. The vinegars are aged up to 18 years
using traditional methods, meaning their natural sweetness comes from the fruit itself, not added sugars.
What this means is shelves are lined with stainless steel fustis ranging from bold, peppery varieties and smooth, buttery blends to crispy-fruit notes and bright, refreshing flavors. This is ideal for sampling to try different combinations before choosing a bottle — or two — to take home.
The tasting-first approach makes the shopping interactive. Private tastings are offered, leading friends to gather around a fusti to compare notes or allow a customer to discover a pairing they never would’ve thought to try.
The goal is simple: Come open-minded and leave with something you love, not just something you bought.
One of the store’s most popular duos is the Tuscan Herb olive oil paired with traditional balsamic vinegar — perfect for chicken marinades, bread dipping or drizzled over a caprese salad. Griffin also recommends playful options like the blood orange-infused olive oil as a refreshing marinade for fish or shrimp, or pair it with the cranberry pear vinegar to make a delicious salad dressing.
Surrounded by so much product and devoted to being a sound guide for customers, Griffin has found dynamic pairings that have taken staple dishes to a new level: replacing 1/3 cup of vegetable oil for 1/3 cup of blood orange-infused olive oil to “dress up” a plain brownie recipe or enjoying a syrupier, wine-like pairing with a generous drizzle of the dark balsamic vinegars on ice cream and cheesecake.
These flavor suggestions are a way to liven up your weeknight cooking. A splash of infused oil or a drizzle of rich balsamic can turn a basic meal into a restaurant-ready dish without the extra effort.
Finding the perfect gift for a loved one, a co-worker or any family gathering can be tricky. At Lorine Olive Oil, Griffin hopes to simplify the process with packaged sets of oils and vinegars. The miniature bottles serve as an ideal trial size to expose those you love to the flavors and fusions
you enjoy.
Each set is assembled in-store, and givers can even turn the bundle into a gift box, adding in charcuterie board essentials and extras, specialty salts and seasonings and small kitchen wares.
It’s a one-stop shop for those seeking dinner inspiration, hosting essentials and the perfect, personalized present.
As you browse the bottles of imported liquid treasures, don’t be surprised when your eye snags on a boutique item you just have to get your hands on. Swaddle and Swag, the brainchild of Griffin and her sister, shares the space with Lorine Olive Oil. Across the store, racks and shelves are lined with Clemson University and University of South Carolina clothing, dazzling jewelry pieces sure to jazz up your day-to-day wardrobe and specialty cups, household goods and other unique
gifts that allow fashion and fun to meet in the middle.
Besides convenience, the two small businesses nestled in the same space works, as they are rooted in the same philosophy: curated items that bring joy and spark conversation. Customers come in to snag a college tee for Saturday kickoff and leave discovering a rosé balsamic vinegar to pair with their game-day dessert.
Want to taste Tuscany? Or savor the spices of Chile? In search of a new topping for your creamy desserts? Save your airplane miles and head down to Bultman Drive.
Lorine Olive Oil is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays at 584 Bultman Drive. The store is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

We do it [renovation and revitalization] with the full focus and intention of historically preserving the past of this venue and honoring all the stories and musicians and people that have been through the doors.

This simple phrase, written on the frame above a door leading to an alcove on the second floor of Sumter Opera House, derived from the promise the venue’s fantastic four — City of Sumter Cultural Manager Seth Reimer, Theater Services Coordinator Kara Grover, Operations Manager Ellen Jensen and Technical Director Tim Langford — made to themselves and to the future of Sumter’s historic venue.
After several delays and impromptu seasons to fill the void, the day has finally come. The scaffoldings are up, the lights are down, and those old theater seats have hitched a ride out of town as Sumter Opera House’s $15 million renovation is underway.
After the destruction of the original structure in December 1892 by fire, the opera house in its present form was built from 1893 to 1895. It would be renovated into a movie theater in 1936, which created 300 jobs for Depression-era workers. It has undergone several changes throughout its tenure - none of which hindered its cultural impact on the community.
Jensen reported how the grand venue has served well beyond its purpose during the last 11 years, from hosting more than 800 events, giving volunteers a place to spend 8,500 volunteer hours, welcoming 206,937 patrons through its doors and giving back $1.5 million in revenue to the City of Sumter from ticket sales and rental fees to
receiving $225,000 in grants from various entities and more than $325,000 in donations, memberships and sponsorships. Its greatest impact has been on the tiny hearts and minds that get to witness the magic of live performances and gain knowledge at the same time. Launched in 2015, the YES Program offers underserved students an opportunity to attend an opera house concert program, and 75 unique youth scholarship events have shone under its house lights. From those shows, more than 30,000 students now know what the opera house is all about.
That impact could be seen on the night of the venue’s Grand Closing Bash in June. The night may have been damp because of the downpour, but spirits were still high as attendees danced, sang and cheered along to Louisiana-raised, Savannah, Georgia-based band Fabulous Equinox Orchestra. The performance, the people, the purpose of the bash celebrated the opera house in a way that used her acoustics to their full potential, accentuated her art-deco dressing and shared her impactful legacy in both numbers and emotions.
Memories of the night will be fond and favored as the grand old dome gets ushered into its next chapter.
The $15 million renovation will include expanding the venue’s lobby and entrance along with its dressing room and backstage amenities, connecting the current venue to its neighbor at 19 N. Main St., new seating, modifications to the balcony, a second-floor lobby space on the balcony level that will overlook downtown and new elevators. What will hold true to its original state is Sumter’s “crown jewel,” the proscenium, or arch framing the stage, in its art-deco style. The renovations are expected to take two years.
“The venue that you are sitting in will no longer look the way it does now,” Grover said at the Grand Closing Bash. “We do it [renovation and revitalization] with the full focus and intention of historically preserving the past of this venue and honoring all the stories and musicians and people that have been through the doors, and we use that energy to push forward into a future for this venue that can serve everyone for another 130 years and beyond.”
Reimer assured attendees, “We will be back.” However, while house lights are down, the show must go on.
The opera house will host special events, its Matinee Series and its Acoustic Café series, which offers a “memorable artistic, acoustic, and culinary experience” in the venue’s intimate City Centre. While growing up, Lisa Gaedtke thought she would go off to school to become a veterinarian but could not bring herself to put animals asleep because of the sadness involved in it.
Fast forward to earning degrees in animal science and canine behavior and working seven years at zoos, and Gaedtke eventually found her calling as an animal care expert and canine professional and operates
Lisa’s Ark Pet Care, which offers daycare and boarding services.
She will provide service for all pets –“everything from tarantulas to horses,” she said, and all animals in between. That includes exotic animals, such as snakes, iguanas, rabbits and birds, domestic animals like dogs and cats and even fish and livestock.
Most exotic animals and livestock fall into the category of home visit services like the pet tarantula she once cared for. Cats generally are also home visits because they often do not acclimate as quickly as dogs to daycare or short-term stays like a week, Gaedtke added.
Daycare services are typically dogs and even more dogs. But she does have cat rooms.
Lisa’s Ark is unique because it provides “kennel-free” services instead of dogs being kept in a 4-by-6 room and separated from other dogs at the facility, she said.
Dogs in daycare are divided into three areas on her two-acre property on Jereco Road.
In her home is a side family room called the “nursery” for small dogs that are 20 pounds or less. The “pup-house” building on site is for those furry friends between 21 to 40 pounds. The biggest dogs, 41 pounds and up, roam in the “camp building” in the backyard area.
According to Gaedtke, enrichment activities for dogs include easy access to go outside to a swimming pool that they can climb in and out of and to a treehouse with a slide. Each canine area has full air conditioning, and there is entertainment also with a TV playing cartoons, such as Mickey Mouse and Bluey.
“They have access to go outside, go swimming, come back in and lay in the air conditioning and watch cartoons,” she said.
Lisa’s Ark also offers aqua therapy for weight loss on site in a saltwater pool where dogs swim for 30 minutes in two 12- to 13-minute intervals while wearing life jackets with a staff member in the pool with them.
Swimming is also good after corrective surgery, Gaedtke said.
“It’s low-impact exercise to swim,” she added.
Business hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and if a pet owner cannot drop off and pick up their dog for some reason, Lisa’s Ark also offers transportation via a “school bus” Monday through Friday. Staff generally picks up three to five dogs per day in the morning, she said, and then returns them in the evening.
Pet owners pay an hourly rate for daycare at Lisa’s Ark as opposed to flat rates, such as half day or full day.
Gaedtke did say that some dogs are better suited for home visits, such as if they are “dogdog aggressive.”
Boarding services range from keeping a pet overnight or a weekend to a vacation but can be longer in the case of a military deployment. The business offers special rates for active-duty military who deploy.
More Americans own pets now as opposed to previous decades, according to offi cial statistics, and Gaedtke said business has also in creased since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many people got a pet during COVID, and that later helped her business when people had to go back to work and needed pet care.
With her degrees and certifications, she also does training/ behavior modification in dogs, such as when the canine is constantly barking and jumping, has food aggression or any undesirable behavior for the pet owner.
The work involves a home analysis that could last three to four hours.
“I evaluate the dog, proper care, figure out why and when the behavior started and what needs to happen to train the dog to stop doing it,” Gaedtke said.
Gaedtke has had Lisa’s Ark for about 30 years now, and she has operated in Sumter for about 15 years.
She got the name from the Biblical character Noah and Noah’s Ark in the book of Genesis.
“Many, many years ago basically when I started the business, it seemed like I had two of everything,” Gaedtke said. “I had two dogs, two cats, two guinea pigs, two parrots, two goats. I had two of everything;
Lisa’s Ark.”
Many customers are sold on her business operation.
Sumter resident Melissa May has used Lisa’s Ark for 10 years with her Great Danes.
Her 2-year-old, Kane, has been at the pet care provider since he was small and comes Monday through Friday for daycare. When May and her family travel, she boards Kane with Lisa’s Ark.
“Every day he’s excited when he gets here,” she said. “He nudges the doors, and he is ready to go in and play.”
If all that is not enough, Lisa’s Ark also does special-event parties, which entail lots of birthday parties for dogs and include a special, gluten-free cake in the shape of a bone or paw and cupcakes and Gaedtke bakes everything, she said.
“With the frosting, we ask the parent what their favorite color is because that is the color we make the frosting. People are obsessed with their pets. People are obsessed.”
Pet ownership in the U.S. has jumped in the last 30-plus years. As of 2024, 66% of U.S. households (86.9 million homes) owned a pet. That’s up from 56% in 1988, pet ownership statistics show.

As of March 7, 2024, any adult age 18 or older who can legally own a gun can now carry one openly in South Carolina.
There are no restrictions as to where a firearm can be stored inside a vehicle.
Concealed weapons permits are still available, and training is free across the state.
The law provides stiffer penalties for people who repeatedly carry guns in places where they are still banned, like schools or courthouses, or commit crimes while armed, whether they use the weapon or not.
The penalties can be enhanced if the offender doesn’t have a concealed weapons permit.
South Carolina joined 28 other states that allow open carry of guns without a permit, including nearly every state in the Deep South.
Public art beautifies A city and uplifts its people
The “Creative Canvas Project” was Sumter’s first dip into public art in 2021. Created by Melanie Colclough, former executive director of the Sumter County Cultural Center, the project was meant to support creativity, preserve landmarks and cultural history and uplift moods throughout Sumter. The Historic Preservation Design Review Committee unanimously approved a request for the installation of eight large-scale murals throughout the Downtown Design District.
Artists selected for the mural installations were paid using a $50,000 grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Connected Communities, applied for by Colclough, as well as private investments from Bank of Clarendon, Main Street Society, Sumter Community Foundation, which donated murals on Manning Avenue, Sumter County Museum, Sumter Economic Development, Sumter County Gallery of Art and Sumter County Cultural Commission. Five murals have been completed, three less than the approved eight and one less than the project committee’s planned six, due to costs. The completed murals hit the mark in revitalizing beloved landmarks throughout Sumter, each telling its own part of the story of Sumter.

For over two decades, the City of Sumter has sought to revitalize downtown Sumter. One way to do so was by giving it some color. Main Street Society and the city teamed up to bring local artists to the forefront by hanging seven uniquely painted 3-foot butterflies across the Central Business District down both Main and Liberty streets.
The 14 total locations are spread out enough to where the city and Main Street are satisfied. The lifespan of these pieces of art downtown is unclear. Whether it’s two years or two decades, once removed, they will find their way back to their sponsors, serving as a timeless connection to local art and the heartbeat of Sumter.
For now, this fluttering fleet of creative creatures has been an enjoyment for frequent flyers of the downtown area, so catch them while you can.

Art is like people. It comes in many different shapes, sizes and shades. It can be in motion or stationary. It can be expressive or reserved, bold or barely whispering. Some art demands to be seen, and some waits quietly for those willing to truly look. And like people, the beauty of art isn’t always in what’s obvious. Sometimes, it lies in what it makes you feel.
For South Sumter, with the opening of its Art Park nestled along historic Manning Avenue, the feeling that comes to mind is hope.
The once-barren lot, the former location for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office substation at 645 Manning Ave., has become a vibrant space filled with art, hope and renewed sense of purpose.
“Those of us have worked very hard to bring Manning Avenue and the south side back to life in a positive way,” state Rep. David Weeks, D-Sumter, said at the opening of the park in December 2024.
“We used to be very strong and full of pride here. Now we are full of pride but not as strong as we need to be. But projects like this will help bring us along the way.”
Weeks worked hand in hand with City of Sumter for this project, thanking the collective #Team Sumter, including South Carolina House Speaker Rep. Murrell Smith, former Sens. Kevin Johnson and Thomas McElveen, Sumter Mayor David Merchant and all of Sumter City Council for their hard work. Funding for the project was awarded from
the South Carolina Arts Commission for $550,000 as well as support from Williams-Brice-Edwards Charitable Trust.
City Councilman Calvin Hastie explained the idea for the park blossomed from Melanie Colclough, former Cultural Center director for Sumter, to create vibrant spaces where art, recreation and community come together. Though she has taken other job opportunities, the community has remained steadfast in bringing this vision to fruition.
The new park features a colorful, fully equipped playground and ample space on the two basketball courts for everyone to laugh and play.
As a backdrop and a testament of collaboration, murals composed by four local artists — Marie Grady, Walter McNeil, Ernest Hampton and Rosetta Davis — transformed the brick walls into a celebration of South Sumter’s culture. The colorful artwork tells stories of what this community holds near and dear to its heart: creativity, faith and optimism. With such a portrayal at the park, the plan is to encourage hope for the future.
“The thing I love about this community, and the thing I love about serving this community, is that we all come together not for what we want individually, not for partisan reason. We come together to do what’s best for Sumter,” Smith shared at the opening. “[This park] will bring beauty to our everyday lives and create opportunities for local artists and foster pride in this community of ours.”

Beyond the big chains, Sumter is home to a handful of specialty grocery stores that are small but mighty, and many locals swear by them. Whether you’re hunt ing for hard-to-find spices, fresh produce or homemade treats and hot-andready authentic Latin food you won’t find anywhere else, these tucked away shops got what you need.
One year into her gourmet grocery store business, and Spice and Grain Gourmet owner Tammy Gristwood continues to see customer growth at her Bultman Drive strip
The business is the only specialized, international gourmet grocer in Sumter, and a focus has been spices, salts, teas and ready-made gifts and products from more than 20 countries.
Some of the ready-made gifts include pasta baskets from Italy, duck pate and cod liver from Iceland, and they are all shipped in internationally from various countries and cannot be found in a regular grocery store.
sideration, Gristwood added.
Gourmet grocery stores have been popular in bigger cities for decades, but it is a newer concept for Sumter but needed, she said, as the community diversifies with more military retirees and the growth of international businesses and corporations moving into the area.
Nut butters from Vermont continue to be big sellers, but the addition this year of refrigerated items to include imported cheeses and caviars and tinned fish (sardines, anchovies and mackerel) are popular now, Gristwood said.
Spice and Grain Gourmet now has a whole table devoted to charcuterie items – meats, cheeses, jams, pickled vegetables, olives and more – which are also popular, she added.
Continuously adding new products is a business focus. Every Saturday, Gristwood still offers free tea blend samples.
“I get one to two new teas in each week, and they are a part of the tea tastings,” she said.
The 532 Bultman Drive store is next door to Tama and Company Hair and Nail Salon.

A tiny local shop with a big community behind it, The Farm Store is made up of farm-grown produce and locally made goods, but what really sets the store apart is their focus on each and every customer.
“We try to be community minded; we try to be individualized enough that we don’t get too involved with the business itself that every customer that comes through the door is not a person,” The Farm Store co-owner Mike Dellinger said, emphasizing that each person who enters the store is important.
The Farm Store, located at 584 Bultman Drive in Sumter,
“Growth is important to any business, and so I am always looking to expand and bring more product into Sumter,” she said. “And if that means expanding the store, then that is what I will do to accommodate that growth, but I want to stay on Bultman.
“Bultman has been a great strip for the gems of small businesses, and it’s a great location.”

It’s not commonplace to talk about your dietary and health needs with your grocer, but at The Farm Store, not only are they willing to listen, it’s part of the job. That’s how the farm store caters to its customers’ needs, by listening. Maybe a customer has celiac disease and can’t have gluten; The Farm Store can provide bread those customers can eat, and it’s the same with those who are lactose intol-
erant or anyone else who has dietary restrictions.
“The relationship with the customers is more important to us than the relationship with our vendors,” Dellinger said.
Of course, The Farm Store sells all the goods you’d expect from a store by its name, such as eggs, dried beans, milk, meat and vegetables grown from their very own farm.
Some of the customers who enter The Farm Store are looking for more than just produce, they are searching for a better quality of life; however, it’s often that they have no idea how to get from A to B. The Farm Store helps with that, too, by supplying healthier alternatives and doing their best to provide the information customers need.

“In our instance, it’s more of the customers coming in and explaining to us their lives, and then us coordinating our stock, supplies, our communications and all of that with our customer base to fulfill their needs,” Dellinger said. And all of that is done as locally as it can be.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, and Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
When The Farm Store first opened in 2010, it was supposed to be an outside, open air market, but that wasn’t
In one of several plazas on Bultman Drive, there’s a little Latin grocery store (a tiendita).
Sandwiched between a hair salon and a bait and tackle shop, the sign above the door could go unnoticed. But to drive by is to miss an opportunity to try something new or find a favorite lunch spot.
It’s called Mercado Acosta, and inside, there’s a little bit of everything: peppers, plantains,
candies, hot sauce, ice cream and piñatas, to name a few. Mauricio Acosta, the owner, sits behind the register six days a week, and on the weekends, his wife, Eddy Maya-Acosta, comes in to help. Acosta opened the store in December 2020 during the pandemic. He said it was important to him that there be a grocery store open regularly where he could find items he needed for his daily life and ingredients, so
allowed by the city at the time. Today, it’s pretty rare to see a retailer like The Farm Store in a brick-and-mortar building, but thanks to God’s plan, Dellinger said, it worked out better in the end for the business and the produce which holds up better inside.
After 15 years, The Farm Store still stands tall today. Much has changed over the years, like when their sister store in Manning had to close due to lack of manpower or when Covid-19 hit, but the community has stood steady behind one of Sumter’s most reliable sources of local goods.
The Farm Store knows the value of its community, so they try to spread their reach outside of the store, too, to pay that support forward.
The Farm Store actually put on the first Farm to Table, a Sumter charity event that features lots of local food. Now done by the Sumter Rotary Club, The Farm Store still participates in Farm to Table every year, and its goods are quite literally from the farm to the table.
Try The Farm Store’s local produce and products for yourself from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. You’re sure to find what you need, and if you don’t, they’ll be more than happy to assist you. It’s just their way of doing things.
he opened his own and let people in to shop with masks and a protective barrier at the register.
The items on the shelves reflect several different countries. Popular products include items from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. However, if someone comes in looking for something specific but can’t find it, Acosta writes their name down and orders it for them.
Mercado Acosta partners with vendors to offer other items, too. They have fresh pastries from a bakery in Anderson. On Saturdays and Sundays after 11 a.m., the shop sells hot food made locally – rotisserie and grilled chicken, pork ribs and hot tortillas. One sheet of grilled chicken feeds about four people (and it’s delicious), but don’t wait – once they run out, there’s no more for the day.
In addition to the variety of food and drink, Mercado Acosta has money-transmitting services through companies like Intermex and can provide over-the-counter medicine as well. The goal is to support people in the community however possible.
“We stay [open] for the simple reason that there are many people that need [this],” Maya-Acosta said.
She added that people come to visit Mercado Acosta from as far as Florence and Columbia.
If Spanish isn’t your first language, that’s OK, too – all are welcome inside the shop. The sentiment emulates their motto:
Lo mejor para su familia. The best for your family.
Mercado Acosta is open Wednesday-Monday rom 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m

For six months, Shaw’s 77th Fighter Squadron and 77th Fighter Generation Squadron were deployed in the Pacific theater on a mission far away from their families, their beds and home-cooked meals. Now, the 77th - also called the Gamblers - are back in Sumter, where they were met with a warm welcome.
“All of us are extremely excited to be back,” 77th Fighter Generation Squadron Commander Caleb Murphy said. “It’s always tough to be apart from family, so the No. 1 thing is we’re all excited to be
back amongst our friends and family and get reintegrated.”
While the squadrons were gone, Sumter locals helped in the ways they could and sometimes without even knowing it. 77th Fighter Squadron Commander Daniel Trueblood, call sign Rage, said even local events such as Oktoberfest and other festivals give the families of those deployed the opportunity to go out into a welcoming environment and provide a distraction.
“When [military families] have that, when they feel
that sense of community from their neighbors, from their team, from their town, if you will, it allows us to focus, so that way we’re able to get our teams to focus on the things that they need to be doing,” Trueblood said. “So even the little things of offering our families opportunities to get out and socialize was really beneficial and was really instrumental to us having a successful deployment.”
Trueblood said Sumter lived up to its motto, “Uncommon Patriotism.”
On the base side, Murphy said the chapel team hosted dinners to support and give back to the Gamblers’ family members.
Support also comes from honorary commanders. Honorary commanders are not commanders in the same sense that Murphy and Trueblood are, but they are a civilian counterpart commander. They work closely with military commanders to become familiar with the unit’s mission and personnel. The honorary commanders already have a tether to Sumter and can make the units known to Sumterites while supporting the unit from within as well.
You may have seen signs around Sumter welcoming Shaw’s 77th Fighter Squadron home from a successful mission; those are an example of what honorary commanders do to build community sup-
port.
While they worked in areas like Japan and Thailand, the squadrons weren’t only performing a flying or maintenance mission, according to Murphy, but they were also immersed in the culture and representing Shaw.
Those who weren’t flying or doing maintenance were out building schools and shelters or participating in local support activities, and one member quite literally saved the life of someone who was drowning in a pool.
“Those kind of things impress the local ties around [the squadron], and so all those things were a positive representation of the United States and by default Shaw, Sumter and so forth,” Murphy said.
Trueblood said that in the Pacific theater, the goal is a free and open Indo-Pacific, and our forces are out there to help our partners establish rules and norms, as well as provide a presence for deterrence.
“We were able to do that mission, so I think the fact we were able to bring everybody out there, we were able to bring everybody home safely, is probably the thing that I would like to highlight the most across the team,” Trueblood continued.
At times, depending on where they were, Trueblood and Murphy had between 330 and 600 people
working for them, with all of them displaying incredible dedication and teamwork, according to Trueblood.
Right now, the squadrons are going through transitions, with Murphy and Trueblood leaving command and moving on to new assignments this summer, but the commanders are leaving on a good note.
“We’re just incredibly awed at how the team came together,” Murphy said. “There were a lot of challenges pulling off a deployment like what we just did, and the team gelled, they
went out there and they performed extremely well. They did a good job interacting with the Japanese.”
When asked what more Sumter could do to support Shaw and the Gamblers’ missions, Murphy and Trueblood said they didn’t know what more could be done in addition to what Sumter already does. So now, we must maintain that support by continuing to hold up our military families, our base and those who bravely serve.
