MS-13 member guilty Mineola man killed 22-year-old in ‘17

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y A Mineola MS-13 gang member was one of two men to plead guilty Friday to the machete murder of 22-year-old Carlos Rivas-Majanos in 2017.

Luis Alejandro Varela, a 24-yearold otherwise known as “Felon” of Mineola, and William Reyes-Fuentes, 27, of Uniondale, both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy, police said.

The two were due back in court Aug. 9 when both were expected to be sentenced to at least 20 years to life in prison.

“For more than a year, Carlos Rivas-Majano’s family was left to speculate about what had happened to him, until his body was recovered in a shallow grave by the Meadowbrook Parkway,” said Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “The defendants – Luis Alejandro Varela and William Reyes-Fuentes – were part of an MS13 crew that lured the victim into that wooded area, beat him and killed him.

We will continue to work with every law enforcement partner to rid our communities of this dangerous gang.”

Class Vice President Declan Brady in his honor essay titled “The Wheatley Way” encapsulated what the school motto meant and how the class of 2022 collectively brings meaning to it.

Brady said The Wheatley Way was bonding through trouble collectively during a bed bug outbreak in eighth grade and the “unfettered dedication” towards winning the class showdown.

Herricks Class of 2022 bids farewell Graduates, outgoing Superintendent Celano reflect on past during school’s 63rd commencement

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y The Herricks High School Class of 2022 and Superintendent Fino Celano both said goodbye to the district Friday during the school’s 63rd annual commencement at the football field.

The evening began with an opening ceremony by principal Joan Keegan and greetings in various world languages from the students themselves.

Board of Education President Henry Zanetti and Trustee James Gounaris, father of a graduating student, provided remarks alongside PTSA president Medline Svitak before Celano gave his final address to the community after seven years of leading the district.

“You have so much to be proud of on this special day set aside for you to celebrate the beginning of the next phase of your life,” Celano said. The superintendent lauded the class of 2022’s accomplishments in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

“Over the years, you have learned to think critically, form opinions and stand up for what you believe in,” Celano continued.

Celano said he was honored to join the students as an honorary member of the graduating class, who are attending over 100 different colleges and universities because he’s “graduating too” before congratulating and wishing them continued success.

Salutatorian Chloe Chang talked about the meaning of success and the different meanings and shapes it may take. Chang said when

the class of 2022 entered Herricks 1,389 days ago, everyone had their own sense of the word shaped by prior experiences.

Chang continued by saying success may not look like what we perceive it to be, but that doesn’t take anyone’s success away from them “I believe when we restrict ourselves to adhere to these binding definitions of others, we lose the true meaning of success at its very core,” Chang said. “I do not know who we let decide the definition of success but here we are redefining it for us today. Success does not look or act in any one way, it is not defined by the fabric or items we own, and neither is it defined by numbers.”

“We can forever alter the lives of those around us for the better,” Chang continued.

“However, as we go on to achieve the great things, I urge you to look around for a moment.

Look how far we’ve come.”

Valedictorian Keneil Soni expressed pride in Herricks while encouraging his classmates to continue their hard work and maintain both who they are and what they believe in. Soni shared stories on the lessons of integrity, persistence and the value of time that he learned from both shortcomings and triumphs while attending Herricks.

“We have all grown so much since we began our careers here at Herricks High School, and will only continue to grow as we part ways,” Soni said. “Time will change our future, but it won’t change the friendships that we built and the memories that we shared here together.

Serial killer indicted in murder of NHP woman

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y A New Jersey man known as the “Times Square Serial Killer” and “Torso Killer” has been charged with the murder of a New Hyde Park woman in 1968 in the parking lot of the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced last week.

Richard Cottingham, 75, of the South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton was charged with second-degree murder, the DA said. If convicted, Cottingham faces a potential maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Cottingham, also known as the “Torso Killer,” is a serial killer and rapist who murdered at least 11 young women in New Jersey and New York between 1967 and 1980.

Cottingham has pleaded not guilty to killing Diane Cusick of New Hyde Park and is due back in court on Aug. 18, police said.

“Cusick was allegedly bound and murdered

by Richard Cottingham,” the DA said June 22.

“It was only through advances in DNA technology that the NCDA and our partners at the Nassau County Police Department, could solve this 54-year-old cold case and identify a suspect in Ms. Cusick’s tragic death.”

Cusick, a 23-year-old mother, was a resident of New Hyde Park and an instructor at an Oceanside-based dancing school when she told her family she was going to the Valley Stream mall to buy dancing shoes on Feb. 15, 1968, police said.

When she did not return home, Cusick’s parents drove to the mall where they found their daughter’s body, hands bound and mouth taped shut in the back of her Plymouth Valiant, police said.

It was determined that Cusick died from asphyxiation due to strangulation.

Cusick’s daughter, Darlene Altman, told Newsday she was relieved at the progress made in her mother’s case decades later.

“It’s odd to describe, it’s just happiness. I don’t know, joy. It’s like relief, relief that something now is finally actually happening,” Altman, 58, said.

The DA said that certain evidence was retested following technological advancements and a DNA profile allegedly matched Cottingham’s profile.

“We make a promise to her surviving daughter today: We will bring her mother’s killer to justice,” Donnelly said.

Hochul, Zeldin victorious in primaries Both candidates win races easily, setting up general election showdown in November

BY B R A N D ON D U FF Y Gov. Kathy Hochul secured the Democratic nomination Tuesday night, easily defeating challengers U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

Hochul will face U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) on Nov. 8 in the state’s general election for governor. Zeldin secured the Republican nomination, easily besting Andrew Giuliani, former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and businessman Harry Wilson.

“It’s the honor of my life serving as your governor, New York. I’m humbled to accept the Democratic nomination and continue fighting to move our state forward — together,” Hochul tweeted Tuesday night.

Zeldin said Hochul’s job is at stake following his win.

“Kathy Hochul has now been warned that NYers are coming for her job at the ballot box this November,” Zeldin tweeted. “We will secure our streets. We will make NY more affordable again. We will fight for our kids & our schools. We will fight to preserve freedom. We are ALL IN!” With 97.3 % of the districts reporting, Hochul had 66.48% of the 863,915 total votes cast, according to the state Board of Elections. Suozzi and Williams secured 12.83% and 19.02% of the vote,

In Nassau County, Hochul received 61.19% of 53,488 total votes. Suozzi and Williams secured 29.93% and 7.38% of the vote respectively. All 1,156 election districts in the county have been reported.

Zeldin had secured 43.53% of 443,637 total votes with 12,404 of 12,804 election districts reported.

Astorino, Giuliani and Wilson secured 18.08%, 22.62% and 14.52% of the vote respectively.

In Nassau, Zeldin secured 57.49% of 49,254 total votes. Astorino, Giuliani and Wilson earned 9.87%, 24.82% and 6.61% of the votes, respectively. All 1,156 election districts have been reported.

full four-year term after being promoted from lieutenant governor following Andrew Cuomo’s resignation last August.

Former U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado will be Hochul’s running mate for lieutenant governor, a position he is serving in currently.

Zeldin’s running mate is Alison Esposito, the deputy inspector at the 70th precinct in Brooklyn.

Hochul was a representative in the state’s 26th Congressional District from 2011 to 2013 before becoming lieutenant governor.

The governor said she has “prioritized keeping our communities safe, bringing down the cost of living for New Yorkers, and investing in schools to get our kids back on track,” according to her website.

Prior to his current role in Congress, Zeldin was a state senator for the 3rd Senate District on Long Island from 2010 to 2015.

Zeldin said when he was endorsed by the state’s Republican Party earlier this year that he favored furthering efforts to support law enforcement officials, eliminate cashless bail and enact a voter ID law.

Following his loss, Suozzi told supporters at Glen Cove’s Garvies Point Brewery and Restaurant that he had conceded and congratulated Hochul at 9:45 p.m.

Within an hour of Suozzi’s event starting, multiple media outlets projected Hochul as the winner.

Representatives from Suozzi’s campaign arrived at approximately 10:20 p.m. with Suozzi himself showing up to a loud crowd cheering his name about 10 minutes later.

Suozzi said despite the result he will continue to hold Democrats accountable for what they were advocating.

“We gave a voice to a lot of people who aren’t represented in politics,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi continued reiterating many stances of his platform, adding that they will resonate with the public.

“As time goes on, people are going to recognize these messages are the important messages that people have to communicate to the public,” Suozzi said.

“Because democracy is supposed to be that the elected officials do what the public wants.”

Suozzi’s running mate Diana Reyna, a former deputy borough president in Brooklyn and former City Council member for the 34th District, said their campaign was a wake-up call for the party.

“Our Democratic Party heard from us; all of us,” Reyna said. “We were letting them know they have to do a better job. It is important we are all participants in our government so that we can have a great state of New York.”

The Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Constitution does not grant a right to abortion, reversing nearly 50 years where Roe permitted abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy in the United States.

State Assemblywoman Gina L. Sillitti (D-Port Washington) said the Supreme Court has left abortion in the hands of state legislatures that want to control women.

“With this draconian Supreme Court decision, the courts have said women don’t get to decide what happens with our own bodies. We don’t get to decide whether we live or die,” Sillitti said in a statement. “We don’t get to decide whether to have a heartbreaking miscarriage naturally or allow a doctor to intervene sparing excruciating pain.”

Officials condemn concealed-carry Blakeman noncommittal on what ruling means for Nassau; Hochul leading charge for reform

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Democratic officials throughout Nassau County and New York condemned the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to overturn a longstanding law that placed restrictions on carrying concealed firearms in public on Thursday.

The 135-page decision, which found that individuals demonstrating a special need for self-defense when applying for a concealed carry license is unconstitutional drew the ire of many Democratic officials who believed the restrictions protected their communities. State Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-North Hills) said the safety of ‘every New Yorker’ is now at risk due to the Supreme Court’s decision.

“For a century, New York has had common-sense laws on the books that protected residents from the threat of gun violence by regulating who can have a gun, and where they may carry it,” Kaplan said in a statement. “Public safety is my top priority, and I refuse to let our communities fall victim to the unnecessary pain and suffering that gun violence inflicts.”

Democrat Kevan Abrahams, the leader of Nassau County’s Minority Legislature, described the decision as a “shocking blow” to the century-old

gun safety framework and said his colleagues will do whatever they can to keep Nassau’s residents safe.

“We are especially concerned about how the increased number of concealed firearms will make it even more dangerous for law enforcement professionals to do their jobs and protect the public,” Abrahams said in a statement.

Michael Dowling, the president and CEO of Northwell Health, said he was troubled by the Supreme Court’s decision, agreeing with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s description of the ruling as a “reckless and reprehensible decision.”

“I look forward to the work that [Hochul] and our legislative leaders are now undertaking to determine New York’s best, most effective response. Northwell Health stands ready to support these efforts in whatever ways are necessary,” Dowling said in a statement.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, in a press conference Thursday, was noncommittal about what the measure would mean for Nassau County until officials had a chance to thoroughly vet the decision.

Blakeman said he, personally, believes in every American having the right to bear arms, but said “reasonable restrictions” are important as well.

“I want to see what the restrictions are, what the guidelines are and then we’ll act accordingly,” Blakeman said.

“We have a great police department and our Pistol License Bureau will be on top of this and the county attorney will give me the guidance that I need to be able to make sure we keep ourselves safe at the same time follow what was decided by the Supreme Court.”

Abrahams urged Blakeman to work with the minority caucus in finding ways to best protect the county’s residents.

“We urge County Executive Blakeman and the Legislative Majority to follow the recent example of the United States Senate and work with us in a bipartisan manner to pass reasonable laws that will keep firearms out of the hands of people who should not have them and protect the rights of lawabiding citizens,” Abrahams said.

Gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) blamed Gov. Kathy Hochul for her previous support for individuals with concealed weapons to cross state borders and enter New York as a member of Congress. Suozzi bashed Hochul in a statement, despite the governor condemning the Supreme Court’s vote.

1 hospitalized after CO2 incident in G.N. 12 individuals treated at Chabad of Great Neck religious camp Tuesday morning

One teenager was hospitalized after a carbon monoxide incident at the Chabad of Great Neck early Tuesday morning, according to fire officials.

A carbon monoxide emergency at the Chabad of Great Neck early Tuesday morning resulted in one girl being hospitalized and 12 being treated at the scene, fire officials announced.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. when high carbon monoxide readings were reported at the building at 440 East Shore Road. Upon their arrival, officials from the Great Neck Alert Fire Company said in a post the girls attending a summer camp at the Chabad evacuated the building after the alarm went off.

Officials said 12 girls were treated at the scene and one 17-year-old girl was taken to North Shore University Hospital for treatment.

Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company Chief Justin Sachmechi said none of the individuals were in critical condition, but he did not have any further updates on their statuses. The 12 girls who were not sent to nearby hospitals were reportedly released to parents and guardians.

A fire marshal on the scene told News 12 that the building had two smoke detectors and a working carbon monoxide

detector. Alert officials said the cause or origin of the alarm was not definitive, but multiple reports indicated that the incident resulted from a malfunction with the building’s heating system.

Sachmechi said he was in charge of the EMS operation while Alert Chief John Purcell was in charge of the scene.

Aside from Vigilant and Alert, the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department, the Port Washington Fire Department and the Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau. The Nassau County Fire Marshal and Kings Point Police Department operated on the scene as well, Sachmechi said, and the New Hyde Park Fire Department and EMS covered the Great Neck district during the incident.

Alert officials implored individuals to closely monitor their carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly in case of emergency.

“We use this opportunity to remind you of the life-saving capabilities provided by carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, encourage you to ensure that you have enough detectors, that they are in working order and you check the batteries,” Alert officials said in the post.

GoFundMe for Roslyn Heights family hits $35K

BY ST E V E N K E E H N E R A GoFundMe page has raised over $32,000 for a family who lost their two dogs and their home in a Roslyn Heights house fire last week.

Around 6 p.m. on Saturday night, authorities responded to the blaze at 183 Jefferson Ave. Firefighters put out the fire, but couldn’t save the house.

GoFundMe is a crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money. Chelsea Meier, a friend of the family, made the page four days ago.

“On Saturday, June 18th, 2022, my best friend of 22 years and her entire family lost their family home and everything in it to a devastating fire,” she wrote. “The Gales family are good people who are loved by many in their community. All of their friends and family are coming together to try and raise money to help them start their lives over.”

With a goal of $100,000, the post has already reached one-third of its intended goal. Meier wrote that, alongside losing pets, the family is without a home or belongings.

“Any contribution you can make will help them to rebuild their lives. We are hoping that if everyone comes together and helps just a little, we can make this devastating time just a little bit easier for them.”

Williston Park roads project on target Public Works superintendent says contractors are currently working on Princeton Street

Williston Park Superintendent of Public Works Steven Shelley provided an update of his department’s progress on the village’s roads project Monday night during the Board of Trustees meeting.

In the past month, Shelley said it was very busy and that contractors have completed concrete work on Hawthorne Street, Remsen Street, Franklin Street, Charles Street, Henry Street, Park Place and Yale Street between Syracuse Street and the dead end and Broad Street between Fordham Street and the pool parking lot.

Contractors are currently working on Princeton Street between Willis Street and Broad.

The streets that have sections left to be completed before the project ends are Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Harvard, Lehigh and Syracuse The project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed by mid-September barring any inclement weather or supply chain issues, according to the village’s website.

Mayor Paul Ehrbar also urged the audience to attend the Williston Park Fire Department’s Independence Day parade on Monday, July 4, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The parade route runs from Broad to Hillside before turning down onto Park Avenue, Center Street and finally Willis Avenue before finishing at the firehouse.

“It’s going to be a great event. The residents should come out and acknowledge what we’re doing and celebrate the day,” Ehrbar said. “It’s an amazing day for the history of our country and we should thank the firemen for putting this on.”

The next board of trustees meeting for the village will be Monday, July 18.

Buddha Jams Yoga promotes kindness

BY B R A N D ON DUFFY On the surface Buddha Jams Yoga in Glen Cove appears to be just a yoga studio. But on the inside of the 5,000-square-foot space, owner Jason Samel hopes people will see it as a place where a lot more can be accomplished than just yoga sessions.

“We’re trying to bring as much of the community together as possible under the idea of being better people and being kinder,” Samel said. “And being loving towards one another.”

Buddha Jams celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, June 18 at 192 Glen Street with group yoga, meditation and family-friendly activities.

Musical performances were held by The Oddysy featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recipient DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy and Space Force featuring the musical stylings of Dave Berg and a freestyle performance by Cut Monitor Milo, previously of Leaders of the New School.

The name itself, Buddha Jams, combines the setting Samel said he wants to create as well as his own personal background.

The Smithtown native and

current Brookville resident owns a record label and music production company.

A decade ago, while living in Great Neck, Samel’s compilation record “Occupy This Album,” which he produced, won the 2012 Independent Music Awards Vox Pop poll for best compilation album.

“From all walks of life, we can come and ‘jam’ together,” Samel said. “And we can make beautiful music and memories together doing it.”

Samel said his newest venture comes from wanting to help others the same way yoga has helped and even saved himself.

He described himself as someone who had been overweight and angry, among other things. He said the trauma suffered during his time at boarding school resurfaced during COVID-19 and he turned to yoga for a way out.

“I was really depressed and anxious and life sucked,” Samel said. “Despite any success I may have had I was really unhappy because of the trauma from when I was a kid and because of the way I was looking, feeling and COVID-19 at the time.”

Samel has long spoken against the trauma he endured while in boarding school, and

has been calling for other alumni to share their stories as well. He said his last memory of attending the school was going to the emergency room after getting hit in the head with a telephone by a supervisor.

“One day, sort of miraculously, I started doing yoga down at the beach on my own,” Samel said. “I was in a really deep depression, I was done with life.

Then all of a sudden I started deep breathing on the beach and that turned into me doing yoga on the beach every single day.”

Samel said if people can get help the same way he did, making yoga accessible is the best way to do it.

Group “jams” for one hour are $20 and anyone with Medicare or Medicaid gets 50% off.

Every day from 5:45 to 6:15 there are free outdoor classes.

Buddha Jams also offers Zumba, acupuncture, physical therapy and other services.

“I cannot wait until the day that someone who has been walking by and seen us outside grabs a yoga mat and joins us,” Samel said. “That’s what it’s all about. It’s about everybody coming together and practicing to be better people in one community—that’s what we’re trying to accomplish.”

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein will resign from his post on July 29, officials announced on Monday.

Eisenstein, who has served as the county’s health commissioner since 2011, told officials of his plans to resign on Sunday. Eisenstein will become Catholic Health’s vice president of community and public health and told Newsday that the new position will allow him to spend more time with his family.

“It has been an honor serving the residents of Nassau County through some of the most difficult and trying times this county has seen,” Eisenstein told Newsday in a statement.

Efforts to reach Eisenstein for further comment were unavailing.

Catholic Health is a Rockville Centre-based healthcare system comprised of 16,000 employees, six acute care hospitals (including St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn), three nursing homes, a home health service, hospice and a network of physician practices.

Eisenstein helped guide Nassau County through the coronavirus pandemic under former County Executive Laura Curran. Her successor, County Executive Bruce Blakeman, lauded Eisenstein for his work keeping Nassau’s residents safe throughout the pandemic and wished him well on his journey ahead.

“Serving multiple administrations, his professionalism, work ethic, knowledge, and commitment to the residents of Nassau County is unmatched,” Blakeman said in a statement. “I want to thank him for his years of service, and wish him great success as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.”

Kevan Abrahms, the leader of Nassau County’s legislative minority caucus echoed Blakeman’s sentiments and expressed his gratitude for Eisenstein’s work as health commissioner.

“We wish Dr. Eisenstein well upon the con-

clusion of his 11 years of service to the residents of Nassau County,” Abrahams said in a statement. “His tenure notably spanned three administrations and the response to an array of public health crises — none larger than the COVID-19 pandemic — and we greatly appreciated his dedication and guidance during such trying times.”

Before serving as the county’s health commissioner, Eisenstein received a Bachelor of Arts from Binghamton University and finished his education at New York Medical College.

Eisenstein completed his residency in internal medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, leading him to serve as the hospital’s chief resident in internal medicine.

Eisenstein also serves as a clinical assistant professor of population health at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and a clinical assistant professor of preventative medicine at Stony Brook University. He served as deputy commissioner for the county in 2009 before becoming the health commissioner two years later.

Blakeman said the “nationwide search” for the county’s next health commissioner began on Sunday and emphasized how the pandemic’s impacts underscored the importance of finding a qualified leader to fill Eisenstein’s position.

“The pandemic put the important role the health commissioner plays in the county on full display for the public to see, and finding the best and most qualified candidates is something I take very seriously,” Blakeman said.

Abrahams urged Blakeman’s administrative team to let the next commissioner do the job without interfering, noting that he and other legislators will “carefully review” the qualifications of Eisenstein’s successor.

“Medical science — not political science — must guide all decisions that impact the health and wellness of Nassau County residents,” Abrahams said.

Fixing the Supreme Court’s gun damage

D

emocrats from President Biden to Gov. Kathy Hochul to Kevan Abrahams, the leader of Nassau County’s Minority Legislature, were both quick and right to condemn the U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision last Thursday to overturn a century-old New York law that placed strict restrictions on carrying concealed firearms in public.

Abrahams described the decision as a “shocking blow” to the state’s gun safety framework.

“We are especially concerned about how the increased number of concealed firearms will make it even more dangerous for law enforcement professionals to do their jobs and protect the public,” Abrahams said in a statement.

Suffice to say, New Yorkers endangered by the Supreme Court’s decision include everyone else — from shoppers to commuters to people attending a movie.

Yes, store owners will have the right to tell customers that firearms are prohibited — just as they had the right to require people to wear masks during the height of COVID. But who exactly is going to enforce that ban?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, at a news conference, correctly said the decision decreased overall safety throughout New York’s communities.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision may have opened an additional river that is going to feed the sea of gun violence in our city and in our nation,” Adams said.

Hochul said Thursday she would call a special legislative session as soon as July and outlined proposals that could let the state maintain some of the nation’s most restrictive gun laws. Democratic leaders in the Legislature promised to work with

the governor.

Justice Clarence Thomas’s majority opinion made clear that the constitutionality of restrictions is historically “settled” in “sensitive places,” such as legislatures, courtrooms and polling locations, and that “modern regulations” may “prohibit” the carrying of firearms in “new” places.

Though Thomas did not specify other places, several justices said during oral arguments in November that might include public transportation,crowded venues,university campusesand places wherealcohol is served Those locations offer the bare minimum of what ought to be included in New York’s new legislation.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted in a concurrence joined by Chief Justice John Roberts that while states may not impose restrictions that prevent “ordinary, lawabiding citizens” from carrying a gun to defend themselves, states can still enact rigorous requirements for a public carry permit, such as stringent background and mental health records checks and completion of regular training courses.

Permitting “ordinary, law-abiding citizens” is problematic on its face given that not all people who have committed violent crimes have been caught and the fact that everyone who was convicted of a violent crime was “law abiding” before their first conviction.

But the justices did give New York the OK to enact rigorous requirements for a public carry permit, such as stringent background and mental health records checks and completion of training courses New York lawmakers should implement those requirements immediately.

They should also require gun owners to possess firearm liability insurance for all gun owners.

Not only would such a requirement ensure that victims of gun violence could be compensated for their losses, firearm liability insurance would provide financial incentives for responsible arms carrying as well as storage at home.

Surely, a state that requires insurance for car owners should require insurance for gun owners.

But opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision — and possible legisla-

tive responses to the legislation — were not universal.

Republicans running for governor in New York and gun lobbyists led by the NRA applauded the U.S. Supreme Court, calling it a win for gun owners in the Empire State.

“The Supreme Court’s decision marks a historic, proper and necessary victory for law- abiding citizens of New York, whose Second Amendment rights have been under constant attack,” said a statement from Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.), the leading Republican candidate for governor.

Andrew Giuliani, the son of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a Republican candidate for governor, said the court “protected the rights of law-abiding New Yorkers to protect themselves.”

And Nick Langworthy, state GOP party chairman and an upstate candidate, said the decision was “a ruling for the people over the politicians.”

A recent Siena College poll found that 79% of New Yorkerswanted to see the Supreme Court uphold the decadesold concealed-carry law.

The poll offers a remedy to those opposing sensible gun regulations in the face of a gun-violence pandemic — voting against all those standing in the way of public safety.

One person virtually missing from the debate was Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

Blakeman said he personally believes

in every American having the right to bear arms, but said “reasonable restrictions” are important as well.

“I want to see what the restrictions are, what the guidelines are and then we’ll act accordingly,” Blakeman said.

“We have a great police department and our Pistol License Bureau will be on top of this and the county attorney will give me the guidance that I need to be able to make sure we keep ourselves safe and at the same time follow what was decided by the Supreme Court.”

This non-response was odd for several reasons.

One is Blakeman’s staunch support of Zeldin, who came out strongly in favor of the Supreme Court’s decision.

Another is that Blakeman serves as the Nassau County Republican Party’s liaison to the Trump presidential campaign. Trump’s three extremist justices helped provide the majority overturning New York’s law.

And still another is the focus of Blakeman and other country Republicans during the recent Nassau election campaign on what they claimed was an increase in guns being fired in Nassau and crime across the state, which they blamed on bail reform.

The claim worked. Nassau County Republicans swept the four countywide elective offices in November’s elections, including for county executive and district attorney.

tive, Blakeman has been a leader of those seeking the repeal of what they have called cashless bail. This has included joining a dozen GOP leaders at the state Capitol to blast Democrats and paint New York’s bail laws as a boon for repeat offenders.

So why is Blakeman equivocating now?

Another oddity is Nassau County’s failure to release county crime comparisons with the same period last year until recently.

This was the first time the information so important to evaluating safety in Nassau was released since October 2021 when Laura Curran was county executive. And the statistics were quarterly and only covered January to March.

By contrast, New York City announces its numbers monthly with its last disclosure showing May crime statistics.

The delay in releasing the crime statistics may not be so odd given what they show — a 75% increase in violent crime in the first three months of 2022 when Blakeman was county executive compared to 2021 when Curran was county executive.

What is also odd is the inexplicable silence of Democratic county legislators in response to Nassau’s failure to disclose its crime statistics.

This is not the time for public officials to go silent on county crime statistics or needed changes to state law. Lives depend on it.

Empire State faces a population drain

S

tatistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Internal Revenue Service do not bode well for the Empire State and the City of New York.

The IRS announced that the number of federal income tax filers continued to decline between 2019 and 2020.

While over 477,000 filers fled to other states, there were only 248,000 new filers. The net loss, 229,000, is the largest drop since the IRS started tracking the numbers a decade ago.

The IRS report also revealed this frightening fact: While the average annual income of those fleeing is $114,000, the average income of those who have migrated to New York is $83,000.

Overall adjusted gross income for the state is down $23.7 billion. Compared to the other 49 states, New York was the biggest loser. California came in second place with adjusted gross income down $17.8 billion.

As for states that experienced a net increase in adjusted gross income, Florida gained the most at $23.7 billion and Texas came in second at $6.3

billion.

Census Bureau figures released in March confirm New York’s population drain. Manhattan was hit the hardest, losing 110,000 people (-6.9%) between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

Brooklyn was down 3.5%, Queens off 3.1% and the Bronx lost 3.2%. The total number who moved out of N.Y.C. was 305,605.

On May 23, the Census Bureau struck another demographic blow. It disclosed the bureau had overcounted New York’s population by 625,000 people. The actual number is 19.6 million, not 20.2 million people.

So, the population figure used to determine the number of New York Congressional seats was wrong. If the correct number had been utilized, the state would have lost two seats not one.

What an incredible decline. In 1940, the Empire State had 45 members in the U.S. House of Representatives. On Jan. 1, 2023, that number will be only 26—and should really be 25.

Here’s why: A survey commissioned by the Partnership for New York City revealed that 40% of people who work and live in Manhattan are seriously contemplating moving out and finding employment in another state.

In the city’s other boroughs, the number who would like to take a powder hit 48%.

Why have so many people had it with New York?

First and foremost, ever-increasing taxes. New Yorkers pay the highest state and local taxes in the nation. A city resident in the highest tax bracket pays a combined federal, state and city income tax rate of 51.8%. (If Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez gets her way in Washington, that burden will increase to 61%.)

Driving people out on the high end of the wage scale can easily destroy the state and city income tax base. That’s because 40% of income tax revenues come from the top 1% of households.

Other reasons people are leaving the city—increasing crime, growing number of homeless living on the streets, declining and unsafe transit service, filthy streets and lousy public schools.

And when the recession kicks in, those quality-of-life issues will only get worse.

Why? Because a huge drop in the stock market means Wall Street executives will earn less money and will pay less

in taxes.

Remember, while the financial industry employs only 5% of N.Y.C.’s workforce, it generates 20% of wages.

As for the state, E.J. McMahon, of the Empire Center, pointed out that “New York’s state budget depends more heavily than ever on taxes generated in the multimillion-dollar tax brackets where incomes tend to correlate more closely with financial cycles.”

Less tax revenues will force the state and city to exhaust its reserves, to utilize fiscal gimmicks and to raise taxes even higher.

With inflation rampant, government employees will demand higher wages—and the political class will add to deficit woes by giving in to their demands.

As taxes and spending continue to climb and quality of life continues to decline, more and more New Yorkers will flee, and the state’s fiscal and economic prospects will continue to deteriorate.

It is a vicious cycle that’s driving the Empire State down the path to financial collapse.

Let the sounds of summer recharge us

B

etween congressional hearings and Supreme Court eruptions, this was one terrible week for calm reflection. And yet this is exactly the time we need it the most.

When you’re so angry that you want to storm off in a million different directions at once, perhaps the best thing is to go nowhere at all. Recharge the batteries, sort out what to do first. Just sit down— preferably dangling your feet off a dock somewhere—and zone out.

I recall a song about this: “When this old world starts getting me down And people are just too much for me to face I climb way up to the top of the stairs And all my cares just drift right into space…”

For Carole King, Gerry Goffin and The Drifters, “Up on the Roof” was the place to go.

But that’s not the best place for dangling your feet. For me, summer R & R is inextricably linked with sounds of water.

It might be a sprinkler hissing in the back yard, with children whooping and running through it or it might be the rhythmic “chick-

chick-chick” of the automated sprinkler that I always think is a cricket.

The beach is a wonderful place for relaxing, now that I don’t have small children to monitor anymore.

The sound of waves crashing on the beach is so relaxing that any number of apps during the pandemic offered me a pale imitation. Unluckily for their wallets, however (and happily for mine), I was never tempted; somehow the artificial sound of ocean waves just makes me even more nervous than I am to begin with.

I need to bring my towel and my sunscreen to someplace in the sun and listen to the real thing. I don’t even need to go into the water to reap the benefits.

Second best, in my book, is the splashing and joyful shouting that makes perfect background noise while reading a trashy paperback at my community pool. Every summer, I forget how much I hate the inconvenience of damp towels and bathing suits, just to get out near some water again.

I wish somebody would make a perfume that smells like sea breeze and suntan lotion. Throw in a Nathan’s hotdog and I’d buy a lifetime supply, just to crack it open and breathe it in the next time the news

A Look on the Lighter Side comes on.

“The Supreme Court today, in a stunning decision…”“Quick, where’s my Ocean Lotion?” I finally understand the point of smelling salts; I can’t listen to the news

these days without something like them.

Where was I? Ah yes … summer. Another one of my favorite sounds is the gentle, almost apologetic lapping of a lake’s tiny waves on a floating dock or the side of a boat. Every now and then a motorized vessel goes by, and you get the more energetic slosh and slap of the wake as it arrives. But soon the motor is off in the distance and things are quiet again—so quiet you can hear the little “swish plonk” of a fish leaping out of the water. They like to do that in front of the folks who failed to catch them all day.

At night sounds carry far on the water. Lately, boom-box cars have been riling up people all around the New York waterfront, but it also serves to remind. You can almost but not quite make out the words— punctuated by laughter and the occasional clink of glassware.

Ah, the sound of a screen door slamming as someone in flip-flops comes into the cabin for another bag of marshmallows. I should join them out by the fireside. Everything I toast ends up in the ashes, but the dancing flames are so tantalizing, and the smell of woodsmoke is one of the best smells on Earth. (The only thing better is when it’s part of a campfire breakfast someone else has started, with bacon sizzling and coffee brewing.)

Someone turns on a TV by accident and a chorus of voices shouts, “Turn that thing off! Don’t you know we’re trying to relax around here?”

I can tell from the wooden clacking that someone wants to play dominos or maybe checkers.

Good! That’s all the thinking I can manage, for the next few days.

My wish, for us all, is a peaceful holiday weekend.

Silent eating mandate eases in Japan

I

t was recently reported that children in primary and middle schools in Fukioka, Japan, now have permission to chat with their classmates during lunch break, providing that they continue to wear masks, sit with their desks facing forward and engage only in quiet conversation.

Wait! What?

Yes, that’s right. Japan’s observance of “mokushoku”—silent eating—which was enacted in order to stem the tide of coronavirus disease, has been lifted.

Can you imagine a silent eating mandate in America?

There would be a massive uprising. Food fights would break out across the nation. The Jan. 6 insurrection would pale in comparison. The Food and Drug Administration would be charged with forming a select committee to investigate. Hearings would be aired on the Food Network.

As the number of COVID-19 cases showed a marked decline in Japan, parents and school officials voiced their concerns that the code of silence was negatively affecting students’ social and emotional development.

Justin McCurry, reporting from Tokyo for the Guardian, said parents are divided about the lifting of mokushoku. He cited one mom who said, “My child is used to eating silently, and I’m sure she doesn’t feel lonely as she is with her family when she gets home.” She added, “I’m concerned about the possibility of infection, so I hope they will continue to eat without talking.”

Other regions in Japan have also put an end to silent lunches. Still others, as McCurry pointed out, “have come up with a compromise that allows children to face each other but eat without speaking.”

Apparently, eye contact is copacetic.

Silent eating in Japan is not confined to classrooms, according to Nina Li Coomes, writing for the Atlantic.

She offered some insight from Rekishi wo Kizame, one of the most popular ramen restaurants in Nagoya.

“Inside the restaurant, there are several blue-and-white posters with a face, its eyes closed and one hand raised in front of its mouth in a universal ‘shh’ gesture,” reported Coomes. “It must be mass-produced,

because I’ve seen the same poster at other restaurants and coffee shops in town with the same policy.”

Can you imagine if the same blueand-white posters were hanging in the U.S. to identify silent dining establishments?

I can visualize one hand raised, but I believe the universal ‘shh’ gesture would be marked over with graffiti depicting the universal middlefinger salute.

Coomes captured the spirit of

the silent dining experience after a meal at the ramen restaurant with her sister. “At the end of our meal,” she recalled, “I catch my sister’s eye over the partition and wiggle my eyebrows toward the door to ask whether she’s done. She wiggles her eyebrows back, and we (quietly!) place our ramen bowls on the counter, get up, and leave.”

She continued, “Outside, faces fully visible, we hop on our bikes and shout to each other across the lane about the food. I spot other patrons doing the same, shrugging off their quiet as they get to the crosswalk…I guess you can stop people from talking about their food for only so long.”

Regardless of the reason, silence is not easy for everyone.

Before retiring from nearly a halfcentury of work in the children’s mental health field, I met with thousands of young people and their parents, often in groups. I came to understand the need to balance the value placed in verbal product with the meaning and impact of silent moments.

Good music is appreciated for the spaces between the sounds—silent intervals—as well as the sounds

themselves. Those of us who work with young people in classrooms or other collective settings can explore the many meanings and mysteries of silence. Following is a poem entitled “Let it breathe, let it be” that I wrote about silence in groups.

Supreme Court has lost all legitimacy

I

t’s hard to separate the double-barreled blows to life and liberty. But together, the radical and contradictory decisions to overturn a state’s gun control law while simultaneously relegating a woman’s constitutional right to reproductive freedom to the states has actually dealt the most destructive blow to the Supreme Court’s legitimacy, authority and credibility.

For the first time in America’s history, the court has taken away a fundamental constitutional protection from hundreds of millions of women, effectively turning women into second-class citizens without the autonomy, liberty or freedom to determine their own destiny – as men have – while at the same time expanding the likelihood of that child they were forced to bear being killed with a gun. Meanwhile, while no one was paying attention, it also overturned the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, upending separation of church and state.

“It’s as if the court has taken a RotoRooter to the Constitution,” a pundit said.

They insist the states have the authority to decide whether or not a woman may have reproductive freedom, autonomy over her body and the liberty of self-determination (as a man or a woman happening to live in a different zip code or being of a different race, income), but then strike down a state’s authority to protect its citizens from the epidemic of gun violence.

And they did it based on the flimsiest of rationalizations: “Privacy,” “abortion,” not specifically in the Constitution? Neither is “Corporation” (yet Citizens United endowed soulless entities with the right to unlimited spending to buy candidates

and elections). What else isn’t in the Constitution? “God,” but a third decision by the Christo Fascist court this week nullified the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause (separation of church and state), requiring Maine to provide public (tax) dollars to support parochial schools while another found in favor of a coach who prayed to Jesus on the field.

What else isn’t in the Constitution?

Giving the Supreme Court the supreme authority of judicial review. The monarchal power asserted by these six radical activist theological ideologues has been assumed (Marbury v Madison, 1803).

Some 96 million women of reproductive age went to sleep the night before the decision as whole, equal citizens and woke up as second-class citizens, whose futures were now in the hands of politicians who would never know them or their circumstance or care. Girls who are raped by their uncle, women who could die in pregnancy or carrying a fetus expected to be born with severe disabilities if it survives at all, families without the resources to care for another child no longer have the ability to make their own choice.

Overnight, 36 million women in states where abortion was already banned or had trigger laws, found they were beasts of burden, not sentient adults, but a “host” to incubate a fetus.

Many who had appointments (harder to even get than to buy a AR-15) and were even waiting to be seen, were sent home, missing critical timeline for their procedure.

Women who miscarry (one out of four pregnancies result in miscarriages) may not be able to find a doctor willing

to endanger their own liberty to care for them, and they may well be prosecuted for homicide. That is not rhetorical, it is already happening. And the likelihood is just as the ban will most likely impact women of color and poor women (white affluent women can simply hop on a plane), who gets prosecuted will be “selective,” just as who gets prosecuted for “voter fraud” or when homicide is dismissed as “stand your ground.”

Is the most frightening part of which rights will be next on the chopping block – contraception and same-sex marriage (also based on “privacy”) or that women whose life may be endangered by pregnancy or carrying a nonviable fetus will be forced to go through full term (America has the highest rate of maternal mortality of any developed country)? Or is it that women will be tracked, traced, monitored for their menstrual cycle, their cell phone usage, mail activity and travel

plans and even prosecuted for behavior deemed unsafe for the fetus?

There are now “free states” and “unfree states” – no different than the pre-Civil War era – connected by a 21st century Underground Railroad (“abortion tourism”!). How dystopian is it that California, Oregon and New York are passing laws to insulate patients and providers from prosecution by another state or persecution from vigilantes, today’s slave hunters?

Many are focusing on the ramifications for contraception and same-sex marriage that flowed from Roe’s “right to privacy,” the rationale Justice Harry Blackbmun used (basically reasoning the woman’s male doctor would guide her decision). Even Ruth Bader Ginsberg said that was “flimsy footing” and Roe (just as marriage equality and contraception) should have been based on the 14th Amendment’s “equal protection” rather than due-process (the basis for “privacy”), when she defended Capt. Susan Struck against the Air Force’s mandate to abort her pregnancy or be forced out of the military.

Indeed, in addition to the 14th amendment’s Equal Protection, women’s reproductive freedom is in fact enshrined in the Constitution: in the 13th (barring involuntary servitude), 15th (equal rights regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude), 19th (“on basis of sex”) and the Eighth amendment (forcing a woman to go through childbirth is cruel and unusual punishment, considered a violation of human rights). Why should women not have the same right to bodily autonomy, freedom, liberty and self-determination as men, or even women in

other zip codes or income brackets?

And perhaps most of all, the First Amendment prohibiting the establishment of religion. The religious fanatics on the court have no right to impose their theology on the rest of us with different beliefs. A Boynton Beach synagogue is suing Florida, contending its abortion ban violates Jewish teachings that abortion “is required if necessary to protect the health, mental or physical well-being of the woman.”

The court has lost all credibility, authority and legitimacy and its rulings should have no force of law.

Protesters at one of the hundreds of rallies in reaction to the ruling chanted “Pro-Life is a Lie. You don’t care if women die.” A man at the rally at Nassau County Courthouse held up a sign, “Abort the Court.”

But since that is not possible, what is necessary is that pro-choice Democrats come out in record numbers in the 2022 midterms and 2024 election.

You may think women are safe in New York, New Jersey or California. But if the Republicans take over Congress, Mitch McConnell has declared his intent to ban abortions federally; the extremist Supreme Court could give personhood to a zygote, giving it more rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness than its mother. And if a Republican takes over as governor or the state legislature in Albany, women in these states could lose cherished freedom as well.

“My administration will use all of its appropriate lawful powers,” President Biden said. “But Congress must act. And with your vote, you can act. You can have the final word. This is not over.”

Once upon a time…in America

E

very story begins with an opening line. Childhood fairy tales will start with the line “once upon a time,” which alerts the reader that they are entering a world of make-believe.

Opening lines are crucial to any column and any piece of literature.

The opening line performs many duties. It establishes the voice of the author, invites the reader into a new world filled with conflicts and problems that will need a hero to fix.

When done well, great first lines in literature remain embedded in the human mind.

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times” is the opening of “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens, who takes us to the turbulent time of the French Revolution and to the cities of London and Paris. “I am Ishmael” is the first thing we hear as we begin “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville. This line introduces us to a simple traveler who is about to enter into the journey of his life by joining Captain Ahab and his crew, who are in search of the great killer whale Moby Dick.

“Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he

had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy” is the way Homer introduced us to the “The Odyssey.” Odysseus has just sacked Troy and attempts to get home to Penelope but seems ill-fated because he has stirred the wrath of the god Poseidon. These openers stir the imagination and invite us to read on.

There is no such thing as a great opening line in film, but they do offer opening scenes. Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” starred Robert De Niro, who played Jake LaMotta, has one of the best opening sequences in film history. The heavenly music of Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” is playing, and you see three lines of rope which surround a boxing ring.

Inside the ropes is a hooded Robert De Niro shot in slow motion as he dances and shadow boxes with a mist around him. This astoundingly beautiful scene, shot in black and white, introduces you to what comes next, which is the most violent boxing film ever made.

The paradox this scene sets up, beauty vs. violence, reminded me of the paradox of great opening lines in literature like “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” It is unfair to compare opening lines in

literature with anything you see or hear in films, because movie lines are supported by handsome actors, great music, genius directors and stunning cinematography.

I watched “Top Gun: Maverick” today and it was a marvel to behold, jam packed with wonderful lines and American exceptionalism but, hey, anything that comes out of the mouth of the smiling, handsome, forever young Mr. Cruise is going to sound pretty good. Lines like “You don’t have time to think up there. If you think, you’re dead.” Or when people kept saying to him throughout the film

“I don’t like that look, man,” and he would answer “it’s the only one I got.”

Perhaps I’m jealous. I don’t have great music, cinematography or a handsome actor to say my lines in a column, but then again, I don’t have to pay Tom Cruise the $25 million that he makes per film.

First lines in literature are what the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung called the liminal space or the doorway into another realm. Great first lines are remembered because like the first date, the first bite of a meal or the first shot in a round of golf, it provides a brief taste of the adventure one is about to embark upon. First lines of a book are like the darkening of the lights in a theater where you let go of your real life and plunge into another world.

The opening lines of “The Divine Comedy” begin: “Midway in our life’s journey, I went astray From the straight road and woke to find myself Alone in a dark wood.

How shall I say What wood that was!”

It was in that dreary forest, alone and frightened, that Dante found Virgil, who guided him out to the woods,

through hell and finally up to heaven where he finally found some happiness and peace.

In life, we are all in the dark woods, alone and frightened. And it is a blessing that great writers can create opening lines like “I am Ishmael,” which shed light upon where we must go. They serve as lanterns that are held before us as we all try to stumble and grope our way toward happiness.

That is the magical power of the written word.

It’s time to break free from plastic T he environmental groups Beyond Plastics and the Last Beach Clean Up recently declared that plastic recycling rates are just 5-6% in the United States. Yet the per capita production of plastics has increased by 263% since 1980.

The petrochemical industry is committed to a frightening expansion of plastic production facilities to make up for their losses as we transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewables for our energy uses.

Meanwhile, plastics may be even worse for us and the climate than the consequences of burning fossil fuels.

Forever chemicals are now detected in our bloodstream, excrements and even in human placenta.

We used to ship plastic away and declare it recycled. Meanwhile, it was often dumped to litter the landscape of less developed countries, where poverty made this industrial greenwashing scheme possible. While China recently stopped accepting our plastics for recycling, new data warns that in addition to well-known dumping grounds in Southeast Asia, a large portion of our plastic waste stream is now diverted to Latin America.

Sadly, plastic waste exporting to Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras is

on the rise, despite international treaties such as the Basel Convention attempting to regulate hazardous waste trafficking. The United States is one of few countries that haven’t ratified the Basel Convention, something worth asking your senator about.

While it’s increasingly more difficult to cover up illegal dumping and the recycling scam has been uncovered, the plastic industry is attempting to declare that the burning of plastics for energy is a solution to the waste and climate crisis.

Engineer Jan Dell of Last Beach Cleanup and former U.S. EPA Regional Director Judith Enck, founder of Beyond Plastics, warn that wasteto-energy facilities contaminate both the atmosphere and waterways, threatening to irreversibly pollute the air and our drinking water, as well as the soil.

Despite public concerns about illegal dumping of untreated toxic ashes and a recent whistle-blower lawsuit, waste-to-energy plant Covanta Hempstead claims that burning of trash is the path forward to manage our trash and meet our energy needs. Meanwhile, hazardous waste is generated at this facility. And who’s paying the price?

We should listen to the systematically excluded voices of low-income BIPOC communities who often live next to landfills and incinerators.

In North Bellport, neighbors of the 300-foot-tall Brookhaven Landfill — the highest point in the landscape of that bioregion — have had enough of “Ash for Trash.” Residents have organized as the Brookhaven

Landfill Action and Remediation Group (BLARG) and demand that it be closed.

The Brookhaven Landfill collects trash from millions of people and receives about 350,000 tons of ash from Covanta incinerator annually, but thanks to strong organizing efforts, this landfill is set to close in 2024. Meanwhile, “North Bellport has the lowest life expectancy on Long Island,” Monique Fitzgerald, spokeswoman for BLARG points out, illustrating the true cost for frontline communities. Fitzgerald exclaims: “The Long Island regional waste crisis isn’t looming. It is here.” Now my question is what are we going to do about it?

We must ban the production of non-essential, single-use plastics, and that is exactly what many countries are doing. China, India and the European Union are sincerely committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics, and Canada recently banned the use of certain single-use plastics.

Some African countries, like Rwanda and Kenya, already committed a while back to strong regulation on plastics.

With true recycling, we reclaim waste. Paper, for instance, is very recyclable. The American Forest and

Products Association reports paper recycling rates of 66% or three times more efficient now in comparison to paper recycling rates of 21.3% in 1980. Paper products are recyclable and biodegradable; metals can be recycled effectively, but plastic needs to be phased out or eliminated.

We must change our behaviors from single-use plastic “convenience” culture to a refill culture. We must insist on product repairability. We must commit to zero waste (refill) or less waste (true recyclability). The answer is to give Uniondale its due

T

o paraphrase the late, great Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin: “All Uniondale’s asking is for a little respect.”

Uniondale residents strenuously — and correctly — object to their hometown being called anything but its proper name. Where we live is a source of great pride, and our hometowns should be fully credited for all the wonderful assets and institutions contained within their borders. In Uniondale, these include historic Mitchel Field, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Nassau Community College, the corporate headquarters of Lufthansa United States, and Uniondale High School’s nationally celebrated Rhythm of the Knight Show Choir. And that’s barely scratching the surface.

For decades, though, the people of Uniondale have been deprived of the full recognition that their hometown deserves. In the most egregious example, an entire three-square mile portion of Uniondale was arbitrarily renamed “East Garden City” for reasons more steeped in real estate marketing and whitewashing than any connection to geographical reality or heartfelt community sentiment.

After years of advocacy, community advocates prevailed in 2015 in their mission to have “East Garden City” stricken as a Census-designated area, which resulted in the area’s restoration to Uniondale starting with the 2020 census. I was proud to work alongside Uniondale community advocates and my federal and town government colleagues to bring this

to fruition.

While correcting the Census was

a major step forward, ensuring that Uniondale receives proper recognition remains a work in progress. The since-erased “East Garden City” continues to appear in sporadic county documents, and Uniondale addresses get “moved” to Garden City erroneously, such as the Nassau County Police Training Center and the Roosevelt Field mall. Civic leaders highlighted this point during a recent rally outside Museum Row to drive the point home that “East Garden City” no longer exists.

And then, “Jeopardy!” on June 3 mentioned Uniondale’s Museum Row — but said it was in Garden City.

Museum Row falls entirely within the borders of the Second Legislative District — a jurisdiction that is very well represented by my colleague and

friend, Legislator Siela Bynoe. Not only is it clear as day on the Census maps that Museum Row is in Uniondale, the Second Legislative District does not have one square inch of Garden City within its borders.

Legislator Bynoe’s subsequent letter to “Jeopardy!” Executive Producer Michael Davies addressing the error gained national attention, and I hope this will be a spark for the type of ongoing education, outreach and advocacy that will drive home the message once and for all that Uniondale is one community in both name and heart.

nder President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Americans face the highest inflation rate in 40 years. Food costs more when shopping or eating out.

Housing costs more, be it insurance, maintenance, mortgage, property taxes or repairs. Transportation

costs more, be it car rentals, insurance, leases, maintenance, payments, public transit, repairs or vehicles, used or new. Utilities cost more like gas, electricity, Internet access, phones or water, healthcare, long-term healthcare insurance and medications are going up.

There are shortages of basic commodities such as baby formula and

tampons that we have always taken for granted would be easily available.

Security at our southern border has been abandoned.

This year we are on the way to see 2 million illegal crossings accompanied by record amounts of fentanyl.

Over 100,000 fellow citizens will die in 2022 as a result of fentanyl overdoses.

While this is going on, Biden, Schumer, Pelosi and company continue to live the lifestyle of the 1% while the rest of us have to pay for the consequences of their actions.

Biden, Schumer, Pelosi and friends remind me of the three Stooges, Moe, Larry and Curley. While the Stooges made us laugh, Biden, Schumer, Pelosi and allies make us cry.

They continue to inflict daily economic pain on us. Give Biden, Schumer, Pelosi and accomplices credit for driving the middle class into extinction. America is on the way to becoming either the very rich or very poor under their leadership.

Floral Park falls short on the disabled

W

hen? When will disabled residents be allowed to participate in our community unconditionally?

For nearly 20 years now, I have been speaking out on behalf of the disabled community in Floral Park, imploring our Village government to create a more inclusive environment.

From zero-step entry storefronts, to accessible playgrounds, to public transportation, to our Village Hall where government proceedings are held, every single day. And yet once again, I was reminded that disabled residents are considered second-class citizens in the Village of Floral Park.

Most recently, I was denied entry to Village Hall for a public hearing. As was vehemently stated to me

a few months prior, there would always be an attendant at the ready to assist with the mechanical stair lift at public meetings. This time, and many times in the past, there wasn’t, and the handicapped-accessible door to get into the building was locked. I was told moments later that, in fact, the mechanical lift was broken entirely.

No sign on the door, no notice of alternate plans for anyone who might want to attend the meeting. Nothing. No regard. After it was realized I wanted to attend the meeting, I was offered a “phone in” via FaceTime. I declined because I was unable to control my anger and frustration and did not want to speak out of turn. Instead, I conveyed my thoughts on the public matter and asked that the individual

please relay my message at the hearing.

WHEN? When will disabled citizens of Floral Park be able to enter buildings through the front doors?

When will disabled citizens be able to carry out everyday civic matters independently? When will disabled citizens be able to attend public gatherings in person? When will disabled citizens be able to access events without the risk of being abandoned by decrepit and faulty machinery? When do the disabled citizens, taxpayers of Floral Park, gain back their dignity?

When will disabled citizens be considered at all?

I implore our Village government to convene a special task force to address the needs of its disabled resi-

dents. This task force should advise the Village Board in all matters, including, but not limited to emergency response and preparedness, village beautification, website design, library, pool and recreation, zoning, planning and development, cultural and community affairs, and everything in between. The Village government must become more aware, sensitive, and responsive to the disabled community.

The Village Board must take heed of the recommendations put forth by the task force in sincerity and with purpose. Members of the task force should be chosen through a public open-call for volunteers and represent various perspectives in disability life. This task force must prevail and work in earnest. It must never exist for

“show.”

Following the conclusions and recommendations of the task force, it is further suggested that the Village Board permanently install a Compliance Oversight Committee to ensure all changes agreed upon are carried out to completion and to avoid any future “oversights” that impinge upon the rights of disabled residents of Floral Park.

The Village Board must ensure that the dignity and rights of every resident of Floral Park are preserved and respected.

Warbird Weekends Salute to American airpower In a patriotic salute to American Airpower, the American Airpower Museum will host a series of Warbird Weekends on selected Saturdays (weather permitting) for the remainder of their 2022 flying season, July 16 through Oct. 29.

Come and watch extremely rare aircraft, featuring the museum’s squadron of vintage WWII bombers and fighters, as they perform exciting flight demonstrations. The American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport is Long Island’s only flying military aviation museum.

The American Airpower Museum maintains a fleet of operational historic WWII aircraft. Weather permitting, the museum may fly one or more of the planes in our collection; a North American B-25 Mitchell Bomber, Douglas C-47B Skytrain Transport, Grumman TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber, North American P-51D Mustang, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, North American AT-6 Texan Trainer and a WACO UPF-7 Biplane.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see these iconic aircraft

in action as they start their engines, taxi to the runway and take to the sky over Long Island as they did over 80 years ago. Bring your cameras to catch amazing photos of the planes as they roar by overhead.

How to approach a basement remodel

A

fully finished and functional basement is a dream for many homeowners. Such a space, when completed, can serve as an entertainment space, a man cave, an artist’s studio, or any number of additional functions.

Despite their usefulness, finished basements are something of a rarity. In an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction, the National Association of Home Builders® found that only around 24 percent of single-family homes built in 2018 have basements. Homeowners who do not currently have a finished basement but are considering such a project can approach the remodel with a few key factors in mind. Careful consideration of these factors can ensure the project is budgetfriendly and worthy of homeowners’ investments.

Investment value: Conventional wisdom among home renovation and real estate experts suggests that a basement remodel is best if done to satisfy current inhabitants and not necessarily to appeal to prospective buyers once the home is put up for sale. Remodeling magazine

reports that a midrange basement remodel costing around $70,000 will provide a return of around $49,000 (or 70 percent) at resale. Though that’s not a poor

return on investment, homeowners who are remodeling a basement solely for the potential ROI at resale can find other projects that provide a greater return.

Foundation: The foundation of the home must garner ample consideration before beginning a basement remodel. Certain foundation issues, such as soft concrete, cracked or curved outside walls and cracks in the flooring, are indicative of significant issues with the foundation. These issues can be costly to address, and they must be remedied before the basement remodel can begin.

Existing space: Some homeowners may have bought their homes with partially finished basements or even finished areas that they simply want to remodel. In such instances, a preremodel inspection from a licensed home inspector can save homeowners lots of money and heartache over the long haul. The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame board of trustees announced last week that the organization has signed a long-term lease with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization to house the non-profit organization’s first physical facility.

The 8,800-square-foot Education and Cultural Center is located at 97 Main St. in Stony Brook Village Center in Stony Brook.

“We are thrilled that LIMEHOF has found a permanent home in such a wonderful location,” said Ernie Canadeo, LIMEHOF, chairman. “We thank the Ward Melville Heritage Organization for leasing us the building. It’s in great condition and we’re looking forward to creating world-class displays that showcase Long Island’s rich and diverse musical and entertainment history in new and exciting ways. We will feature different and exciting exhibits, displays, videos and education offerings that will make our center a dynamic place for people of all ages to visit on a regular basis. We are planning a grand opening in November.”

There will be a permanent “Hall of Fame” with plaques and exhibits recognizing the over 100 and growing inductees, as well as areas for a library, classrooms for educational programs and master classes and a theater.

“Our organization has grown and our wish has always been to have a physical facility to showcase our mission of celebrating Long Island’s musi-

cal history and supporting education,” LIMEHOF Co-founder Norm Prusslin added. “We can now achieve our dream.”

The main exhibit space will contain a rotating exhibit theme. The layout and first exhibit, “Long Island’s Legendary Club Scene: 1960s-1980s” is currently being designed by world-renowned visual designer Kevin O’Callaghan.

“Our trustees feel this is a perfect fit with the other not-for-profits located in Stony Brook Village, namely, The Long Island Museum, The Jazz Loft and The Reboli Center,” said Dr. Richard Rugen, chairman of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

“With all the other attributes in the Stony Brook Village, such as restaurants, shops, parks, Discovery Boat, kayaks, historic buildings and hotel, this is a perfect addition,” Gloria D. Rocchio, president of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, added.

The multi-purpose building was constructed to hold exhibits, performances, classes and is wired for distance learning. When I heard that LIMEHOF was looking for a permanent home. I called Ernie Canadeo and the rest is history.”

Wrong oak tree felled on Main Street

O

n June 16, the Town of North Hempstead mistakenly cut down a large oak tree on Main St. This happened despite warnings to the crew by a member of the Town’s Tree

Advisory Committee. This was happening outside her office. She kept insisting that they were cutting down the wrong tree, but they went ahead anyway. Only after they cut down the tree did they realize that the diseased

tree was across the street. Laughable incompetence if it was not so serious a mistake.

The Town of North Hempstead’s amended Tree Law was approved on Nov 15, 2021, and the formation of

the Tree Advisory Committee was announced on Jan 21, 2022. Despite these necessary and long due actions there was no oversight and control to prevent this gross error.

The public needs to know what

will be done to prevent this from happening again and what will be done to replace this tree.

Town Supervisor DeSena in over her head

ennifer DeSena has been in office for over six months, and she appears to be completely lost in her role as supervisor.

Watching the most recent Town Board meeting on June 16, the common thread was her lack of disseminating information to her constituents (you and me). From the town-owned public golf course to the redistricting of council districts,

DeSena has failed to communicate anything other than political platitudes when she assails her Democrat colleagues.

The community that spoke at the meeting repeatedly complained of the lack of information provided by the supervisor. The meeting was a who’s who of Republicans in elected office — all of her pals ranging from Jack Martins to various Republican

village mayors across North Hempstead, and they all complained that the town (supervisor) did not inform them of public meetings, and therefore failed to provide the temporary commission on redistricting.

Did the supervisor choose not to call her colleagues to attend and input their suggestions and concerns?

When will our supervisor recognize the many valuable assets of

North Hempstead — the “Yes We Can” community center, the Gold Coast Art Center building in Great Neck, Clark Botanic Gardens?

Perhaps the transition team might have better informed her of our Town’s many assets and the Town’s responsibility to maintain them. Certainly, there are budget lines for these treasures?

It’s time the supervisor assumes

the responsibility of the position to which she was elected.

Claiming “no one told me” about this or that, or “we will look into the problem” is getting tiresome.

Eight months after being elected to the position should be enough time learn the job.

Two-tiered justice in the United States

ecently there was a leak about a possible U.S. Supreme Court draft decision.

Immediately, a radical prochoice left wing extremist group, “Jane’s Revenge,” promised to deliver a “Night of Rage” if the court overturned Roe v. Wade. This group has also openly called for an “open season” against pro-life centers and has taken credit for dozens of attacks across the country. They have even gone so far as to proclaim, “To our oppressors: if abortions aren’t safe, you’re not either.”

Another extremist leftist group, “Ruth sent us,” published the home locations of the six conservative

justices whose names were on the leaked Supreme Court draft decision. Then they asked their followers to target these homes with protests, the churches where they prayed and even the schools where their children attend. One of these group’s followers even went so far as to be arrested while armed outside Justice Kavanagh’s residence at 1:45 a.m. in the morning and said he was there to murder Justice Kavanagh.

There was no statement from President Biden deploring this attempted assassination. Vice President Harris was also conspicuously silent. Speaker Pelosi had the unmitigated gall to block a Supreme Court

Security Bill. She was even quoted as saying“No one is in danger,” as she has armed guards following her whenever and wherever she travels and lives in a gated community protected by a private security force.

Partisan Attorney General Merrick Garland was too busy sicing the Justice Department on parents who showed up at school board meetings to voice their opinions on the education of their children than to order protection for these justices. Garland refuses to enforce 18 U.S. Code Section 1507 — Picketing or parading which states, “Whoever, with the intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration

of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer, in the discharge of his duty, pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer, or with such intent uses any soundtruck or similar device or resorts to any demonstration in or near such building or residence, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both”.

Probably the most disgusting statement was by Sen. Chuck Schumer when he said; “Republicans are waging war on women! I want to tell

you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanagh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price! You won’t know what hit you, if you go forward with these awful decisions!”

Schumer is guilty of inciting violence against Justice Kavanagh. If this person had been successful in murdering Justice Kavanagh, blood would be on Schumer’s hands. Now just imagine what would have happened if a Republican had made these statements. Sure seems like there is a two-tiered justice system in place.

Solar panels boost home value, save money As the price per kWh (kilowatt-hour) increases in relation to the price of fuels, what does one do to keep their utility costs either more stable, reduced drastically or to zero? The one method that thousands of homeowners have opted in to do is using solar panels. This has assisted them in considerably reducing their electric bills by capturing the sun’s “free energy” rays and converting them to electricity. This will make their electric meters go in reverse and potentially store electric credits for future use, especially when their CAC/ACs are being in use during the summer months.

There are various types of solar panels from the standard rectangular types to Elon Musk’s Solar City’s small squarestyled panels. One must due their due diligence to determine which style will best fit and function on their specific roof.

What are the total costs? Is the home situated in the most advantageous location with adequate sunlight to produce the necessary and desired results to make the investment? If not, can trees be pruned or cut down with the approval of the local municipality to enable the installation and investment to increase the value of the home? Should one lease or purchase?

Are there any state and federal tax credits available to homeowners?

A study done by Zillow and Berkeley National Laboratory revealed that solar panels increase the value of a home by

$5,911 for each kilowatt of solar panels installed and another estimated an increase of 4.1% of the home’s value. New York City had one of the highest returns at 5.4%. Zillow notes that selling prices are 1.4% more than those homes without them. This is based on owning the system and not leasing it which generally is not the most beneficial path to take.

Geographic location (the higher the local electric costs the greater the savings), local solar installation prices (new systems installed might make the value a bit less than a home with a system already installed), system output and system age (older systems will have depreciated the most and whatever repairs and replacement parts will cost the new buyer, this will not add as much increase in value as a new system) will all contribute to the actual greater or lesser increase in the value of your home.

Federal and state tax credits are extremely lucrative for the homeowner who installs a solar panel system. The Federal ITC (investment tax credit) is currently 26% (was 30% up until 2020 and will be reduced to 22% in 2023 and will end in 2024 unless Congress extends the benefit) of the total cost of materials and labor until December 2022.

ITC credits have been available since 2006 when Congress initially adapted it.

The solar industry has grown by 10,000% and solar capacity has increased by 42%

in the last decade. In 2021, solar energy accounted for 46% of all new electricitygenerating capacity added in the U.S. State tax credits are currently 25% of the total cost of materials and labor, with a maximum credit of $5,000 based on a total cost of a $20,000 installation.

Form IT-255 for the state and IRS Form 5695 for the federal must be filed.

These tax credits are a direct dollar-perdollar reduction on your actual income taxes that would be owed.

There are specific terms that must be met to qualify for all the state and federal

tax credits:1.) One must own the system and not lease it2.) Primary, secondary or off-site community project must be located in the U.S.3.) Date of installation must have been from Jan. 1, 2006-Dec. 31, 2023.4.) Tax credit can only be claimed on the original or new system and not the repurposing or reuse of an existing system.

There is no sales tax on a new system. For battery storage systems, the owner will receive $250 per kWh. As an example, for installing a Tesla Powerwall Battery with a capacity of 13.5 kWh, a rebate of $3,375 is provided in addition to the federal and state ITCs.Commercially installed solar panels or energy cells also are a very smart investment for most commercial properties. Not only do you receive ITCs but you can sell the more economically produced electricity to your tenants at a lower cost than what they are paying now. Lastly, the payback period can be as little as three years and as the commercial property owner you can earn additional money on their electricity, but at the same time save your tenant’s money, a win-win situation.

Installing a system, providing that your location is more than adequate for the necessary savings to minimize or potentially eliminate your electric bill, can be a huge benefit for adding value to your current or future home. Moreover, the tax benefits will go a long way in reducing

your taxable income during the year of installation (speak with your CPA for more details). Today’s buyers are much more environmentally conscious, would prefer a smaller carbon footprint if possible, and put saving money high on their list. When you are ready to consider selling, a solar system will attract more purchasers and the time it takes to sell will be faster.

So do your homework and determine the added value and benefit to your home by installing solar panels and live almost or completely free and send your utility company walking.

Candidates for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, to replace Suozzi in Congress, also joined in reactions to the landmark decision.

“In Dobbs, the Supreme Court acted correctly by letting the people of New York decide,” Republican candidate George Santos tweeted. “There was bipartisan criticism of the Constitutionality of the Roe v. Wade decision, including from the

late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Now the State of New York must govern and legislate based upon the will of the people, as the Tenth Amendment outlines.”

Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan said the decision is an assault on reproductive rights and Port Washington progressive activist Melanie D’Arrigo said her “rage is incalculable.”

“In New York, we are fortunate that abortions are safe and legal, but this decision by the Supreme Court has endangered the lives of tens of millions of women across our country,” Lafazan said. “We can’t sit by as this fundamental right is taken away — now is the time for action.”

“This is a heavy day. For the millions of people who will now lose access to their critical right to an abortion, my sorrow is profound and my rage is incalculable,” D’Arrigo tweeted. “The supreme

court’s 6-3 conservative bend is a result of dark money buying the votes of our politicians and the judgment of our courts. Our rights were sold.”

Great Neck’s Robert Zimmerman released a statement saying the Supreme Court is “willing to advance an extremist conservative ideology.”

“This abhorrent decision represents a devastating development for women’s rights. Being able to make decisions about one’s body is a fundamental human right—it is the precondition to controlling one’s life entirely,” Zimmerman said.

Former Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman also condemned the court’s decision, describing it as “an unconscionable assault” on women’s rights.

“We must act to protect all those who seek reproductive care,” Kaiman said in a statement.

“We must provide resources for those who live in

states where their rights are no longer guaranteed. We must enact federal legislative protection for abortion rights.”

Northwell Health, the state’s largest health care provider, joined in speaking against the decision.

“Northwell Health is disappointed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v.

Wade, which made access to safe and legal abortion a constitutional right for five decades,” the statement read. “This decision is a setback for women’s reproductive health. Our concern as the region’s largest health care provider is that this ruling will succeed in ending access to safe abortions and disproportionately cause harm to those who already have limited access to health care. ” This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, in a press conference, said the decision decreased the overall safety throughout New York’s communities.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision may have opened an additional river that is going to feed the sea of gun violence in our city and in our nation,” Adams said.

New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said any individual that illegally carries a gun throughout the city will be arrested, noting that the immediate impact would be ‘minimal,’ according to the Daily News.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Thursday night that the U.S. Senate passed “the first significant gun safety bill in

nearly 30 years.’

The bill would strengthen background checks on younger individuals seeking to obtain a firearm and includes $750 million to help states implement ‘red flag laws’ which allow law enforcement or families to remove an individual’s firearm if their behavior indicates they are a danger to harm themselves or other people.

Additionally, $150 million will be used to support a national suicide prevention hotline, $240 million for mental health initiatives for school-age children and $60 million to provide primary care physicians with behavioral health training.

Hochul, on Saturday, said her team is convening an extraordinary session of the state legislature on June 30 to pass new legislation surrounding gun safety. Officials said they will find ways to define “sensitive locations” where individuals could not carry a concealed weapon in public. Hochul said she believes all of New York City should be included as a “sensitive location.”

“I will do everything in my power to protect New Yorkers,” Hochul said in a statement. “Just weeks after the white supremacist act of terror in Buffalo, we moved swiftly to pass a landmark, nation-leading legislative package to strengthen our gun safety laws.”

According to a CBS News report, half of the country utilizes state-issued permits to carry a concealed weapon in public.

In the cases of states including California

and New Jersey, individuals have a right to carry a firearm in public ‘only if they have a need to do so.’

Government officials have discretion in denying an applicant a concealed carry license even if the individual meets the necessary requirements. Supreme Court arguments in November from various New York officials, according to CBS News, centered around how repealing the gun safety framework could result in concealed firearms being carried in airports, churches and even schools.

The most recent expansion of gun laws was in 2008 when the Supreme Court found it to be constitutional to possess a handgun in the home for self-defense purposes.

With the new decision, New York’s concealed-carry permit application process could mirror other states’ which are comprised of meeting minimum age requirements and general background checks.

Under Supreme Court rules, a party has 25 days from the decision to ask the court for a rehearing, unless the court or a judge shortens or extends the window to challenge the decision.

Roughly half of America’s 45,000 yearly gun deaths are suicides, Dowling said.

“Being that guns have surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the nation’s No. 1 cause of death among young people and many of the recent mass shootings – including Uvalde and Buffalo – have involved teenagers, anything that we

can do to keep guns out of the hands of young people is a step in the right direction,” Dowling said.

Northwell has frequently conducted programs centered around educating individuals on and combatting gun violence, something Dowling has described as a “public health issue.”

Recently, Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention brought together family members of those who lost their lives to gun violence and survivors of incidents aimed at preventing further incidents from happening.

“The most likely reason that your kid will die in this country is at the hands of a firearm – and that is absolutely unacceptable,” Dr. Chethan Sathya, a pediatric trauma surgeon who also serves as director of Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention, said during the event.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), another gubernatorial candidate, lauded the Supreme Court’s ruling, saying that the previous framework was an attack on the Constitution’s Second Amendment.

“The Supreme Court’s decision marks a historic, proper, and necessary victory for lawabiding citizens of New York, whose Second Amendment rights have been under constant attack,” Zeldin said in a statement. “It reaffirms their inherent right to safely and securely carry to protect themselves, their families and their loved ones, and the principle that this Constitutional right shall not be infringed.”

New district maps were submitted recently by a court-appointed “special master” and have been viewed as more neutral compared to ones that were rejected by a state appeals court several weeks ago.

While the 3rd Congressional District under the new proposal does not extend as far west as the Bronx or Westchester, it does stretch to more southern parts of Nassau County such as Hicksville and Massapequa. The new lines do exclude the parts of the district that now stretch into Suffolk County, mainly Huntington and Smithtown.

Nassau’s major crime up 75% in 2022 Continued from Page 1 The list of major crimes includes murder, rape, criminal sexual acts, sexual abuse, commercial robberies, other robberies, assault felonies, residential burglaries, other burglaries, stolen vehicles and grand larceny.

Some of the main increases came from stolen vehicles, which increased by more than 250% throughout the county over the past year.

The Third Precinct reported 35 stolen vehicle incidents in 2022, nearly a 170% increase from 13 last year, while the Sixth Precinct saw a 750% increase in stolen vehicles with 51 this year, compared to six last year, according to the statistics.

During a public safety forum held in March in the Village of Great Neck, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the problem has evident in the Great Neck peninsula. In 21 of the 23 cases of stolen vehicles throughout the peninsula, he said, key fobs had been left in the cars and he urged residents to be more cautious when locking their vehicles for the night.

“It’s nearly impossible for us to catch them unless we catch them in the act,” Ryder said during the meeting. “They’re coming back here over and over again because we’re making it easy for them.”

Ryder said a majority of stolen cars that have been recovered are located in Newark. He also said car thieves will drive the car around, leave it somewhere and if nobody comes near the car and it is not impounded, then the car will be rented to another individual who uses it to commit other crimes.

Stealing cars that have garage door openers inside are also ways to attract repeat offenders, Ryder said, as criminals will sometimes rent the car but keep the garage door button to come in and burglarize an individual’s home.

Village of Great Neck Mayor Pedram Bral said that villages across Nassau County are working with County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who was also present at the meeting, and the Police Department to secure license plate readers so that any car that is reported stolen can be better tracked by law enforcement.

Other increases to the county’s major crimes this year included nearly 400 more grand larceny incidents, according to the statistics.

During the first three months of 2021, a total of 592 grand larceny incidents occurred throughout Nassau County. That number rose by nearly 65% to 972 cases this year. The Third Precinct reported a 78% increase of grand larceny incidents with 296 this year, while the Sixth Precinct reported a nearly 90% increase of grand larceny

A group of Chilean burglars was arrested in early 2020 for allegedly burglarizing three North Shore homes, including two in Sands Point and Great Neck Estates. District Attorney Anne Donnelly, who at the time was the deputy chief of the Nassau DA’s Rackets Bureau, said the men brazenly told arresting officers their handler recruited them to burglarize New York homes and the risk of jail was low because of the state’s new bail reform laws.

Officials confirmed that James Clark, the court-appointed defense attorney, asked for the men to be released on their own recognizance.

District Court Judge Martin Massell ordered the men to be held without bail, though only two were charged with bail-qualifying offenses, according to a representative from the district at-

torney’s office.

Saddle Rock Mayor Dan Levy’s house was burglarized prior to the arrest of two men in December. According to officials, more than $100,000 worth of collectible coins and family mementos were stolen from Levy’s home.

The statistics provided by the Police Department did not have a month-to-month breakdown of the incidents or where they specifically occurred.

Efforts to reach Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and law enforcement officials for further comment on the statistics and when more updated ones would be published were unavailing.

Ryder and former County Executive Laura Curran announced last July that major crimes throughout Nassau decreased by more than 10 percent from 2020, which reflected a decade-long decline in major crimes throughout the county.

The police commissioner said last year that major crime in Nassau had dropped 36 percent since 2011. A decade ago, Nassau saw 7,191 reports of major crime compared with 4,983 last year, he said.

Nassau County spends $1,148 per capita on police and fire protection while the national me-

dian is $359, according to a U.S. News & World report this year that named Nassau County the safest community in America in 2020.

Public safety professionals account for 1.26 percent of the county’s population, compared with the national median of 0.70 percent.

The county again received that distinction as the safest community in America from U.S. News & World report in 2021.

While running against Curran, a Democrat, for the county executive seat, Blakeman, a Republican, claimed that the U.S. News & World report only took the “spoonfed” statistics from the county and said they were not reflective of what happened during a pandemic-riddled 2020.

The county executive has also expressed his strong opposition to the state’s bail reform laws, enacted in the beginning of 2020. Blakeman signed an executive order earlier this year which cites a need to “increase transparency by disclosing in daily reports the pending criminal case data and bail status of those rearrested” by the Police Department. He said the reports will be made available online.

The order also said more than 2,000 repeat offenders across the state were subsequently arrested for a violent felony while another case was pending. More than 400 of those repeat offenders were rearrested for a violent felony involving a firearm, according to the executive order.

“It’s time that Nassau residents and the lawmakers who passed these dangerous laws know exactly how they are impacting our communities,” Blakeman said earlier this year. “This executive order sheds sunlight on these dangerous laws and puts pressure on the governor and state lawmakers to put law-abiding Americans above criminals.”

Ryder, who was reappointed by Blakeman earlier this year, said in January that the county’s Police Department reported 13 gun arrests in the several weeks following the new year, with six of the defendants released on cashless bail.

Others, he said, were given ankle bracelets to be monitored by police and then released on cashless bail.

The six cases Ryder mentioned involved individuals being charged with possession of a loaded firearm, a bail-eligible offense. In those cases, the individuals charged seem to have been released without bail at the judges’ discretion.

Officials said nearly 90 percent of the 11,000 people arrested in the county in 2021 were released without bail. More than 300 of those individuals were released without bail following a weapons-related offense, according to officials.

Something individual, something unique, something intriguing. ‘The’ is the single most commonly used word in the English language,” Kang said. “Simply because it’s ‘The Wheatley School’ our sense of community and connection with one another is reinforced. The Wheatley School fosters student groups unknown to other

high schools and enables intricate student-teacher relationships that wouldn’t be possible at an average high school.”

Welcoming remarks were given to the class by co-presidents Siddhant Jain and Emilia Keys.

Two musical performances were given by Julian Chang on the cello, Joyce Chen on the violin, and Andrew Kim on the viola with Krittika Prajapati singing “Breakaway” accompanied by Rick Wilson of the English Department.

In her final address to the district before her retirement, Superintendent Elaine Kanas gave graduates an overview of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey Kanas told graduates to be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek to understand, then to be understood, synergize and sharpen the saw.

On Dec. 13, 2016, Ventura killed Moya while shooting at a perceived target of MS-13. Police said Ventura and another man, David Maldona-

do, were riding bikes in Uniondale before finding their intended target and ordering him out of the car.

After displaying gang signs, police said Ventura fired several rounds and hit Moya, an unintended victim, in the head.

The guilty plea is the latest in a series of prosecutions in the Eastern District of New York targeting the gang. The U.S. Department of Justice has described the gang as “the most violent crimi-

nal organization on Long Island.”

The gang’s leadership is based in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico with several branches in the United States.

Since 2010, the Justice Department has obtained indictments charging MS-13 members with carrying out over 60 murders in the Eastern District of New York, which covers Nassau, Suffolk and three New York City counties of Queens, Kings and Richmond.

Sillitti touts summer reading challenge State Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti is inviting local parents, guardians and students to participate in the New York State Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge, held in partnership with New York State Libraries.

The theme for the 2022 challenge is “Oceans of Possibilities” to encourage children to explore strange and new worlds and fall in love with exciting characters and stories. Young readers who complete the challenge will receive an Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate to celebrate their achievement.

“Reading is critically important for our youngest New Yorkers, as it stimulates intellectual growth and opens up worlds of possibilities,” said Sillitti. “An exciting story can help introduce kids to new ideas and bring historical figures to life, and it’s critically important for young learners to continue reading during the summer months. The Summer Reading Challenge is the perfect opportunity to foster a lifelong love of learning.”

During summer break, students often experience a decrease in reading proficiency. Known as the “summer slide,” this phenomenon can compound over multiple summers and requires schools to apportion resources to help kids catch back up in the fall.

Reading helps children prepare for the new school year and maintain their academic progress, and is a fun activity for students and families, Assemblywoman Sillitti noted.

The challenge asks children to read a book for a minimum of 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during July and August.

Children can read on their own or with a partner or caregiver and mark off days on the calendar provided. Once they’ve completed 40 days or more, they submit the calendar to Assemblywoman Sillitti to receive a certificate in the mail.

Proposal for fentanyl detection strips in Narcan kits Flanked by community leaders and recovery advocates on the front steps of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building, Nassau County Legislators Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D — Glen Cove), Arnold W. Drucker (D — Plainview) and Debra Mulé (D — Freeport) unveiled legislation on Tuesday, June 21 that would require the inclusion of fentanyl-detecting test strips in Narcan kits distributed by Nassau County agencies.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that experts at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have determined is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

The consumption of fentanyllaced drugs — often unbeknownst to the user — has resulted in a tragic increase in the number of overdose deaths amidst the ongoing opioid drug crisis in Nassau County and across America.

Including fentanyl testing strips with Narcan kits would serve as a low-cost way of potentially identifying tainted drugs and preventing accidental overdoses. Individuals dissolve substances they wish to test in water and dip a strip into the solution. The strips require only minimal amounts

of drug residue to work properly, and results are generally available within five minutes.

Findings from the 2018 FORECAST study conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health determined the inexpensive strips are simple to use and have a high level of accuracy in detecting fentanyl in drug samples.

“Fentanyl has dramatically raised the stakes of our ongoing battle to conquer the opioid drug addiction crisis,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton, ranking member of the Nassau County Legislature’s Health & Social Services Committee, said. “Distributing these strips will give residents another tool for preventing the devastation caused by fatal overdoses. Most importantly, it will keep the door open for anyone who is struggling with addiction to ultimately get the treatment they need to achieve long-term recovery.”

“For many years, we have witnessed the life-saving capabilities of Narcan and how receiving a reprieve from an overdose can be a catalyst for successful treatment and long-term recovery,” Legislator Mulé said. “Pairing fentanyl detection testing strips with the Narcan kits we distribute is a

common-sense way for Nassau County to accelerate our collective efforts to prevent overdoses and save lives.”

“As the battleground in the opioid drug crisis shifts, we must adapt our strategies to save more lives and give more residents the best possible chance at achieving long-term recovery,” Legislator Drucker said. “By including fentanyl detection testing strips in the Narcan kits that County agencies distribute, we have an opportunity to quickly ramp up our ability to uncloak this silent, stealthy killer — one that would otherwise lurk in the shadows.”

In December 2021, Suffolk County passed similar legislation to require the inclusion of fentanyl testing strips in the Narcan strips they distribute.

Here in Nassau, Keisha Graham-Wilson, of the Hicksville-based Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., said the agency has been including Fentanyl testing strips in the Narcan test kits it distributes for the last several months. Kits come with directions stapled to the package; the proposed Nassau legislation similarly require instructions to be included with all testing kits that are distributed.

“These test strips are so important in terms of preventing overdoses,” Graham-Wilson said. “Individuals don’t realize that fentanyl is in substances that they are using. We have individuals that have told us they are only using marijuana, but when we do toxicology, sometimes we have to tell them that the substance they are using is laced with fentanyl — and they are so shocked and surprised.”

Additional recovery advocates and community leaders from across the County expressed their support for the proposal. They agreed that fentanyl test strips are yet another tool that

can be utilized to prevent overdoses and save lives.

“Because fentanyl is 40 to 50 times stronger than heroin, it is possible that a fentanyl overdose victim may not respond to just one dose of Narcan,” said Claudia Rotondo, Executive Director of the Baldwin Council Against Drug Abuse. “Providing these strips could be life-saving because it would give us the ability to test the remnants of the substance that was ingested to see if it was cut with fentanyl.”

“The DEA warned several months ago that fentanyl was a driving force behind the majority of overdoses that have transpired in the last year,” said Dr. Sharon Harris, Executive Director of the Glen Cove-based Substance Abuse Free Environments (SAFE).

“This is an incredibly important piece of information that needs to be promoted to educate our youth and our families and educate our youth and our families about what is going on.”

“This is very important legislation, and I am sure both sides will agree to this,” said Jeff Stone, President of Port Washington-based Project Help Long Island. “Fentanyl is a huge scourge on our society — plain and simple.”

Guidance Center reopens Children’s Center at Family Court North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (the Guidance Center) is pleased to announce the reopening of the Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court, which provides care and early learning to children while their parents or guardians are conducting court business such as divorce and custody cases.

The Children’s Center had closed during the pandemic, when all Family Court activities were moved to a virtual platform.

“The Children’s Center is a safe haven that allows children the opportunity to develop early learning skills through age-appropriate play and activities that are fun and exciting for toddlers and children up to age 12,” said Dr. Nellie Taylor-Walthrust, director of the Guidance Center’s Leeds Place, under which the Children’s Center operates. “Now that the court is on a hybrid

schedule with families coming back in, it’s essential that children can return to the Children’s Center so they don’t have to witness potentially contentious interactions among their family members.”

“A lot of important things happen in this building, and at the Children’s Center, children will be well cared for,” said Ellen Greenberg, supervising hudge at Nassau County Family Court.

While participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Greenberg told those gathered, “Don’t ever let anyone tell you this is just babysitting; it’s a true learning center, and families know they can leave their children here safely while they work on court matters.”

“The reopening is great news for the kids who come to Family Court with their parents or guardians,” said family law

Parents of children lost to gun violence demand change Northwell Health’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention brought together dozens of gun violence survivors, family members who have lost loved ones and advocates as part of an ongoing effort to build a coalition of support and public awareness aimed at curbing the nationwide surge in gun deaths and injuries that is killing more than 45,000 Americans annually.

Over the past two decades,Shenee Johnson,of Shirley, has lost her fiancé, a cousin and 17-year-old son Kedrick Morrow to gun violence while living in Springfield Gardens, Queens.

“Our stories did not make national news,” she told fellow family members whose children were victims of gun violence.

“But as a black woman in America, I’ve had to bury three people – all killed by illegal guns. I’ve dedicated my life to be their voices.”

Lonnie and Sandy Phillips have been responding to mass shootings since their 24-yearold daughter, Jessica, was murdered in July 2012 in the Auro-

ra, Colorado, theater shooting.

Jessica was one of 12 people killed that day; more than 70 were injured.

As a way to honor her memory and offer support to families impacted by gun violence, the Phillipses founded the advocacy organization Survivors Empowered and have travelled to countless communities impacted by mass shootings over the past decade. Most recently, they were in Buffalo to offer counseling to those impacted

by the Tops supermarket massacre; upon hearing of the Uvalde school shooting, they immediately travelled to Texas.

This year, they plan to travel to 22 cities nationwide as part of their ongoing effort to build a national coalition of survivors that will continue to raise their voices for common-sense gun safety legislation. “I call on everyone who values the sanctity of human life to get involved now,” said Ms. Phillips.

council, and her mother Rene painted the beautiful murals on the walls of the Children’s Center many years ago.

“The reopening of the Children’s Center is so important because it gives children a place to come to be enriched, to learn and to be cared for,” said JosephYehuda.

Another advisory council member, Katherine Cho, a professor in the Criminal Justice department at Nassau Community College, brings her students to the Children’s Center.

“They love to get involved with the Center,” said Cho. “It’s a great way for them to learn about the workings of the Family Court.”

“It’s a privilege to be able to serve children and families to reduce caregiver stress and have opportunities to connect them with resources they may need outside of Family Court,” said Kathy Rivera, Guidance Center executive director/CEO. “We are committed to bringing our families comfort and guidance wherever needed.”

hospitals have already treated more gun violence victims since January 1 than in any other prior year, Dr. Chethan Sathya, a pediatric trauma surgeon who also serves as director of Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention, said it’s imperative that hospitals and health systems become more engaged in addressing some of the underlying causes of what is clearly a public health crisis.

“The most likely reason that your kid will die in this country is at the hands of a firearm – and that is absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

Since last November, clinicians at three Northwell hospitals have been screening thousands of patients for risk of firearm injury.

Similar to questions they are asked by doctors about whether they drink alcohol, use drugs or smoke, patients are asked whether they own a firearm, how it is stored, whether they hear gunshots in their neighborhoods and whether anybody has ever pulled a gun on them. “In many neighborhoods, literally every child hears gunshots every night,” said Sathya, noting that the goal is to keep families safe from homicides, suicides and accidental shootings – not infringe on their Second Amendment rights.

As lawmakers in Washington, D.C., continue to debate

gun safety legislation prior to Congress’ July 4th recess, survivors and advocates say action cannot come soon enough, even though they fear the compromise bill under consideration does not go far enough to reduce the average of 124 gunrelated deaths that occur every day in the U.S. Despite the frustration, Northwell Health President and CEO Michael Dowling urged advocates to persevere. “We cannot give up,” he told advocates.

“And because they see the impact of gun violence every day, health care organizations have a special responsibility to step up and say, ‘Enough is enough.’”

Lucas Schmuck wins David K. Israel Scholarship For the past 39 years, the East Williston Teachers’ Association has awarded a scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to study education and to become a teacher. The David K. Israel Scholarship is a $10,000 scholarship, named after a 40-year veteran English teacher who served as the East Williston Teachers’ Association President for more than a quarter-century.

This year’s recipient is Mr. Lucas Schmuck One teacher describes Lucas as born to be a teacher; they are a natural. He is gushingly enthusiastic about the books and authors he loves. He is an astute reader, with fresh insights and confidence. Lucas has taught meticulously

well-prepared lessons in SWS. The student feedback for the class was outstanding. So much so, that the students demanded a follow-up class!

Lucas is described by another faculty member as an incredible student of literature. He is an excellent participant in discussions, always analyzing deeply and reading closely. Lucas has the ability to take whatever text is being read and make it relatable to all the students in the class. A skill that is incredibly necessary for a successful educator! Lucas is passionate about his subject area and about helping students. He is intelligent and quick thinking. I enthusiastically recommend this person for the Scholarship.

What is most impressive, however, is his desire to become and the strong ideas he has as to what makes a great teacher. Lucas already understands that encouraging creativity, individual exploration and helping students discover who they are and what they want is as important as the curriculum. Schools can be a difficult place, and teachers are always there to make it better. It is Lucas’ ultimate goal to be one of those teachers.

Indiana University is truly fortunate to welcome him this fall.

N. Shore lax players head All-American list Schrieber’s Henry Haberman, Manhasset’s Alexis Morton tops on Nassau County rankings

BY M I C H A E L J . L E W I S The Nassau County Lacrosse Coaches Association named its All-American teams in boys and girls lacrosse last week, and for the first time ever a Schreiber male was named attackman of the year.

Henry Haberman, a senior who led the Vikings to their first county championship since 1995, was honored for his outstanding season, one of many area All-Americans chosen.

Haberman, headed for Loyola (Md.) in the fall, scored 54 goals and added 24 assists, and accumulated more than 150 points for his fiveyear career.

Haberman was joined on the NCLCA AllAmerican team by a pair of Manhasset players who were integral in the Indians winning a state championship for the first time since 2010.

Senior midfielder Joey Terenzi (headed to University of Virginia) and junior midfielder Cal Girard (oral commitment to Duke) both were honored for their fantastic seasons.

“Honestly, every single guy on our team could be an All-American, it’s a team sport,” Terenzi said. “Of course it’s nice to be named and recognized but it’s not as important as the team winning.”

Terenzi racked up 36 goals and 29 assists for Manhasset this season, finishing up a fiveyear varsity career.

“It’s a great honor but winning (the state title) obviously means more,” Girard said. “We have such a great group of guys on this team, all my brothers, who helped us win.”

Senior Dawson Rielly of Manhasset was also named an Honorable Mention All-American.

Making the Academic All-American team were Manhasset seniors Hunter Panzik and

Matt Perfetto.

The All-County Class A team was dotted by several local players, including Schreiber seniors Matthew Freeman, Bradley Hamroff, Gavin Jacobsen, and Ben Krefetz, along with junior Luke Meyer.On Class B’s all-county team, Roslyn senior Jonah Baum and junior Alex Gatto were honored.

On the Class C/D team, all-county honors went to Manhasset’s Terenzi, Girard, Panziz, Perfetto and Rielly, as well as juniors James LaPina and Jack Petersen, and sophomore Jack Mulholland.

On the girls side, Manhasset senior Alexis Morton and junior Alex Schneider were both named All-Americans by the Nassau County Girls Coaches Association. Morton, an attack heading to Richmond next season, had a dominant senior year, with 58 goals and 44 assists, and elevated her game even more in the playoffs, with 26 goals and 17 assists in only six games.

Coach Meg Clarke said Morton “did everything she possibly could do. She was so important and helped make her teammates better all season.”

Schneider, a junior defender headed to Virginia when she graduates, was crucial to Manhasset allowing only two goals in the state championship game, using her speed and instincts to help lead a terrific Indians defense.

Junior Caitlin Barrett (a Duke commit) was an honorable mention All-American for

Manhasset as well.

Two Manhasset players were named Academic All-Americans: Seniors Despina Giannakopoulos (Harvard) and Ashley Newman (Duke) were honored.

Making All-County team for Manhasset were the aforementioned quintet of Morton, Schnieder, Barrett, Giannakopoulos and Newman, while Schreiber’s Catherine Karman and Natalie DeMeo, along with Mineola’s Maggie McMahon, were also honored as All-County performers.

Roslyn gymnast Sirota to compete in Israel

BY M I C H A E L J . L E W I S Shani Sirota has always wanted to travel to Israel.

Now, the recent Roslyn High School graduate has a very good reason to go, and she’s bringing about 20 family members with her.

Sirota, who finished eighth overall in last spring’s New York State gymnastics championships, including two top-five individual event finishes, was selected last month to compete in July’s Maccabiah Games, a prestigious event for Jewish athletes held in Israel every four years often referred to as the “Jewish Olympics.”

Sirota will be one of five women gymnasts competing in the Maccabiah Games Open Division, for athletes 18 and up.

And since she’s already going, her family has decided to make the trip, too.

“I wanted to do it because I’d never been to Israel, and it’s cool to see all these Jewish athletes together,” Sirota said. “And once I got selected, my parents decided to plan a whole trip, with cousins, uncles, aunts, about 20 of us.“It should be a great time.”

The last time the Games were held, in July, 2017 the Maccabiah Games hosted 10,000 athletes representing 80 countries, making it the third largest event in the world,

behind only the Summer Olympics and the Asian Games.

Sirota said she was originally supposed

to try out for the team in person, before the team’s coaches, in November, but a spike in Covid cases forced cancellation of the tryout.

Recent Roslyn High School graduate Shani Sirota will be competing in the upcoming Maccabiah Games in Israel, beginning in July.

Instead, potential team members were asked to send in videos of their routines last winter, with Sirota finding out she’d made the team last March.

“She’s always been this calm, confident athlete who never gets rattled,” said Roslyn gymnastics coach Stephanie Orfini. “She practices exactly how she competes, at a very high level, and she’s been so great to coach all these years.”

Sirota, who said one of her gymnastics inspirations, Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman, also competed in the Maccabiah Games, and family leave for Israel on July 5, with the Game continuing through July 26.

The gymnastics competition is a one-day event, on July 18, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing.

“The first 10 days we’re there is training, and then we have our competition on the 18th, and then there’s time to look around,” Sirota said. “I definitely want to see the Western Wall and the Dead Sea. “I’m really going for the experience and to have fun, and to compete somewhere else in the world I’ve never been before.”

Three weeks after Sirota gets back to Roslyn, she’ll head down I-95 to start her career at Division I gymnastics power University of Maryland.
