Mineola directs feral cat gripes to the town

PRIDE OF PORTUGAL

Trustees say village not responsible for issue in response to complaints BY R E B ECC A K L A R A handful of residents spoke at last Wednesday’s Mineola Board of Trustees meeting about feral cats roaming village streets, but officials said they were barking up the wrong tree and should talk to the Town of North Hempstead instead. The village does not have an animal control department; it is one of the services Mineola residents rely on the Town of North Hempstead to manage, Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira said. Robert Sckalor, a village resident who lives on Simonson Road, addressed the board about the feral cats in the fall. Since then, two new litters of cats have appeared on his block alone, he said. More cats have also appeared on Marcellus Road by the Mineola Memorial Library, Sckalor said. “That is the section of Mine-

ola with wonderful concerts, all these great things,” he said. “Who wants to see all these cats, who wants to walk into a concert and step on cat feces as they go see ‘Aladdin’ tomorrow night?” Sckalor said he has reached out to the town regarding its program, which catches, spays and releases cats. He was told there is a 12-to18-month waiting list for the program, he said. Sckalor asked the village board if it would be possible for Mineola to create a program to “solve our own problems.” In many ways, the village is self-sufficient and does not rely on town services, Pereira said. Unlike unincorporated areas, such as Carle Place, Roslyn Heights and Albertson, Mineola residents don’t use the town’s sanitation or building departments, Pereira said. Continued on Page 66

State Sen. Elaine Phillips gave Mineola Trustee Paul Pereira a proclamation at last Wednesday’s meeting to honor Pereira being given the Order of Merit by the President of Portugal in June.

W.P. trustee challenges Ra for Assembly seat B Y R E B E C C A K L A R role of Assembly District 19’s William Carr said it is time for regular people to start running for office, which is why the Williston Park village trustee said he decided to take on the

Democratic candidate. “It just seems to me that a lot of the politicians nowadays are lawyers or multimillionaires,” Carr said in an interview. “So why not a regular person.”

Carr will face four-term incumbent Republican Ed Ra in the November election. Ra won his last election in 2016 with nearly 62 percent of the vote. Continued on Page 67
