North Hempstead’s oldest love story Husband’s death in August ends title held for 6 years, but couple’s memories live on long-lasting

BY R E B ECC A K L A R As soon as Ruth Shifman walked into her friend’s house party on Valentine’s day 75 years ago, she caught the attention of her her soon-to-be husband, Larry Shifman. “He came over immediately,” Ruth said. “It was love at first sight. He loved me the minute he saw me and he didn’t know anything about me.” Larry took Ruth home that night, and the two continued to see each other the next few weeks, Ruth said. Two weeks after they met, for Ruth’s birthday, Larry bought her a friendship ring. A couple of weeks later, the friendship ring was upgraded for an engagement ring, Ruth said. On June 7, 1942 – a little less than four months after the night they first met – the Shifmans were married. Their 75-year long marriage surpassed financial worries and a world war, bringing three children, seven grand children and two great grand children into the world and lasting until this past August when Larry died in his sleep. “We lived a lovely life, and my advice to everyone is you’ve got to love each other,” Ruth said. “If you don’t love each other then you’re not compatible for each other and it won’t last, but for us it lasted and lasted.” For 63 years the Shifmans lived in Nassau County, first in a house in Lake Success and later in a smaller home in New Hyde Park. They were honored by the Town of North Hempstead as the longest married couple in the town for the last six years, Ruth said. The couple faced their fair share of obstacles together, though.

Ruth and Larry Shifman were honored as the longest married couple in the Town of North Hempstead for the past six years. Larry died this August. Larry worked for a company making ships and planes for the military, Ruth said. About two months into their marriage, Ruth said her husband told her he wanted to go into business himself. “I said, ‘We just got married, what are we going to do for money?'” Ruth said. Ruth said her husband told her not

to worry, and he bought a place and ran a foundry. All of a sudden, Ruth said, her husband had so much work the foundry was too small and he needed a larger one. As Larry’s business was taking off, the war facing the Shifmans and the rest of the world was escalating, too. About two years into their marriage,

President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all men under 26 – even business owners like Larry – to go into the service, Ruth said. Larry was shipped out to Pearl Harbor, leaving Ruth and their six-monthold son at home, she said. When the war was over, Larry was shipped home within a week, Ruth said. Their son already two-years-old. That’s around when the growing Shifman family moved from their small apartment to build a house in Lake Success, Ruth said. Ruth and Larry saw a model and built their own – a house they lived in for 11 years. “That was our life,” Ruth said. “He lived a beautiful life, he was healthy and wonderful.” Ruth said she misses her husband very much, but said she and her family are grateful for the years they spent with Larry. “To keep on going, we were very compatible, never argued, never fighting,” Ruth said. “We only loved each other.” Ruth said she and Larry went all over together. They’d go to nightclubs and sang and danced. They were also active members in the community, she said. She said her husband helped build the synagogue they joined 53 years ago, and went on to be the mens’ club president. “I loved him, everyone loved him,” Ruth said. “My parents, anyone we met – he was a very very wonderful man and the most handsome.” “Love, love, love is the key to success,” she said. In addition to being honored by the town, Ruth said she and her husband were interviewed by Neil Cavuto on Fox 5 as the longest marriage in the town. And though Ruth may not be honored this year by the town for her longlasting marriage, she said February 14th is still her day.

Keeping love alive for 65 years Frank and Alice Castiglione call open communication the key to happy marriage long-lasting

BY A M E L I A C A M U R AT I When Frank Castiglione proposed to Alice Durante on their second date in 1952, she waited two months to say yes. The North Hills couple, who will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 12, met in the Paramount Pictures offices in Times Square late in 1951. After a few weeks of seeing each other around the office, Frank, who was head of the newsreel division, asked Alice from the contracts division to see a movie and have dinner with him for Valentine’s Day 1952. A year and a half later, the couple were married. “They still hold hands,” their daughter, Linda Scaturro, said. “They still speak very lovingly about each other. I know that if anything were to happen to either of them, the other one would be really lost. To have a partner for almost seven decades is an achievement that’s unheard of.”

Frank and Alice Castiglione will celebrate their 65th anniversary in September. When they met, Frank was a United States Navy veteran from World War II and had recently finished his business degree from City College of New York on a scholarship. He began pursuing his degree shortly after graduating from high school at 16 before joining the Navy and returning to college after he left in 1946. The couple were married at St. Robert’s Church in Bayside and celebrated after-

ward at Forest Hills Gardens Hotel. Their first apartment together was in Fresh Meadows, Alice said, and at first they were concerned about whether they would be able to pay the bills for the $74-a-month home. When asked what advice he would give to young men and women getting married today, Frank said, “You have to try to be of equal minds and agree to disagree some-

times. You don’t want to carry any grudges.” Alice said the key to their longstanding relationship is communication. The couple has two children, Frank Peter Castiglione and Scaturro, as well as five grandchildren, all on Long Island. Alice, who has always put a large emphasis on family, said the couple has been on 33 cruises to different locations around the world, including many trips to Italy. Scaturro said her parents’ “loving and supportive relationship” helped inspire her and her younger brother as they grew into adults, molding their relationships with their spouses as well as their children. “They’re loyal to each other,” Scaturro said. “That’s something that’s lacking in a lot of relationships. It’s easy to be there when things are going well, but it’s not so easy to be there when they aren’t. They showed an amazing loyalty and determination to stick together through thick and thin.” Scaturro said the family still tries to have dinner together every Sunday because of the tradition her parents began decades ago of prioritizing family over work and social events. “Through the ups and downs, they were always each other’s advocates,” Scaturro said. “They are always there for each other.”

Born in Italy, found love in Port Frank and Miscioscia Raimo approach 55th anniversary working together on life long-lasting

BY LU K E TOR R A N C E The first time Frank Miscioscia heard of Maria Raimo, he was living in Bari, Italy. “I had heard, before I came over [to the United States], that she was the most beautiful girl in the town,” he said. But Frank and Maria, though both born in Italy (Maria was from the town of Avellino, near Naples) met for the first time in Port Washington in 1961, where they stayed in a boarding house. The area has been their home ever since. “I really like this town, this has been where I’ve stayed since I moved from Italy,” Maria said. The couple started dating near the end of 1961, a few months after Maria first arrived in the country to stay with her father. One of their first dates was to go see a movie in Manhasset, where they were joined by an unexpected guest: Maria’s father.

Frank and Maria Miscioscia “After we got home, he was asking me questions about the movie and then he started laughing,” Maria recalled. “And he said ‘I was there, I was two rows behind you. I wanted to make sure [Frank] was a good boy… from now on, when you want to go out, you can go alone — he’s a good boy.’” Frank agreed. “I didn’t touch nothing,” he said.

The couple dated for about two years before getting engaged and then marrying in December 1963. For their honeymoon, the couple went to Jamaica — the one in Queens. “We didn’t have much money at the time,” Frank said. In the 54 years since then, the couple had two children — both boys — and seven

grandchildren. Frank founded a construction company and Maria ran a card store on Shore Road. At one point the couple ran an Italian-American deli at the current location of Carlos Pizza on Main Street in Port Washington. In 2013, their children and grandchildren threw a big 50th-anniversary party for Frank and Maria, inviting back many of the guests at the couple’s wedding years earlier. When asked to explain how they managed to make the relationship work over the decades, Marie said it was because the two tackled their problems as a team. “You have to work together and solve all your problems together,” she said. “Everything is hard and life is hard, but if you can work together you can do it.” When asked what they liked about each other, the couple each had a joking answer. Frank said he loved Maria because she is a good cook. “I like him because he agrees with whatever I say,” Maria said of Frank. The answers sparked laughter from each other and the other family members sitting around their kitchen table. But after the laughter died down, she gave her honest answer. “There’s nothing to disagree with him,” she said. “He’s always smiling, he never gets mad … he’s good. I’m going to keep him.”

Unique ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day Valentine's Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine's Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of mostpurchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine's Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it's out of couples' comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple's looking to set their celebrations apart. · Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine's Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine's Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot's Palette, for Valentine's Day specials. · Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports

fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition. Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. · Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine's Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. · Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungee-jumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine's Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

Eco-friendly Valentine’s gifts Red may be the color most often associated with Valentine's Day, but those who want environmentally friendly ways to celebrate this day of love can tint the occasion with a little green. This list of earthconscious Valentine's Day gifts can provide inspiration for loving couples. · Give organic chocolate. Eco-conscious chocolate connoisseurs will appreciate indulgent fine chocolates crafted with the planet in mind. Some of the world's best chocolate is produced from small cacao farms that do not employ fungicide or insecticide in their farming practices. Choose chocolate artisans that produce their chocolate from responsibly-sourced ingredients for a sweet Valentine's Day treat. · Plant a live gift. A living gift can be a symbol of enduring love and one that gives back to the environment. Couples can explore their options at local nurseries and plant a shade tree, shrubbery or even a fruit tree. This is certainly a gift that can give every year. · Write it down. Love notes are a simple, heartfelt gift. Choose to scribble down sentiments on recycled paper with nontoxic inks. Give that love note even more traction by framing it for a lasting gift. · Adopt an animal. Animal lovers cru-

sade for their favorite mammals, reptiles and amphibians every day. Rather than exchanging a stuffed animal on Valentine's Day that will only take up space on a shelf or bed, consider saving the life of a real animal. Conservation agencies can always use helping hands. Donations can be used to feed and shelter pets or to restore habitats for wild animals. · Give living plants. Flowers can express all types of emotions, but those cut blooms will begin to fade after a few days, especially when some flowers are flown in from all over the world. Gifting a potted plant from a local nursery is a more ecofriendly idea, and one that can last for many years to come. · Create a free-range, organic meal. Homemade food can be a nice gesture, especially when cooks select fair-trade, organic and free-range products. Don't forget to extend the specialized shopping to include wine or other beverages that are locally sourced. · Give gifts of sustainable comfort. Practical but luxurious linens and clothing made from sustainable materials are great eco-friendly gifts. Bamboo bedding or organic cotton shirts offer comfort and promote environmental stewardship.
