id Jacobson Jewish Community Center in East Hills is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Israel with a festival this weekend and a visit from a former prime minister next week. This weekend, Israelfest will take over North Hempstead Park Beach at 175 West Shore Road in Port Washington from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, featuring live Israeli music, Israeli trivia, pita making, Israeli wine tastings, Hebrew name necklace making, beach volleyball and arts and crafts for all ages. “During this festival, we are bringing Israel to life,” Ariel Magal, Israeli emissary working with the Long Island community through Sid Jacobson, said. Everyone who loves Israel and cares about Israel should be celebrating with us, not only the fact that Israel is 70 but also the culture, the food, the music, the people and the views of Israel.” Magal said the festival is a community project thanks to a collaboration of UJAFederation of New York, Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center and more than 30 partner synagogues, Jewish educational institutions and Jewish youth organizations from across Long Island, and while the festival is billed as celebrating Israel, Magal said the festival is a celebration of the community itself. This year’s event is sponsored by Amy and Scott Jaffee, Best Market, FCE Group, Naot, New York Life and Power Home Remodeling. Admission and parking is free. Kosher food and Israeli products will be available,

including rugelaches from a Brooklyn bakery that originated in Jerusalem. For more information, visit sjjcc.org/ israelfest. On Thursday, May 10, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak will speak at the Rubenstein Theater in the community center. Magal said while the event is nearly sold out, some tickets remain. General admission is $35, preferred seating is $50 and a VIP meet and greet with Barak is available for $500, which includes preferred seating for two, a dessert reception and a signed copy of Barak’s book, “My Country, My Life: Fighting for Israel, Searching for Peace.” The program begins at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7:45 p.m. and the VIP reception before the event at 7:30 p.m. Barak served as Israel’s 10th prime minister from 1999 to 2001 and was the leader of the Labor Party until January of 2011. He has also previously held the posts of minister of defense and deputy prime minister under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s second government from 2009 to 2013. Barak, who retired from politics in 2013, is also the most highly decorated soldier in Israel’s history. Barak also spoke at Temple Emanuel in Great Neck last year. “It’s a chance to listen to one of the most important speakers in the history of Israel,” Magal said. “It’s an opportunity to really get a guided tour of Israel’s reality and recent history from one of the people who was at every major intersection. He was in the room when almost every major decision was made. It’s a chance to walk through history.”

Eglevsky Ballet’s ‘Cinderella’ at Tilles Center The Eglevsky Ballet will present the world premiere of Executive Artistic Director Maurice Brandon Curry’s production of the Sergei Prokofiev ballet “Cinderella.” This beloved ballet based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault will be brought to life at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, May 12 at 1 and 6 p.m. Establishing a period for this timeless tale was extremely important to Curry. “I have never been a fan of the ‘white wig and crinoline stories’ which make up so many of the fairy tales in the ballet canon,” he says. “I always feel as if it has been done better by some of the best so why try and recreate it? Additionally, I think our audiences, both youth and adult, deserve a fresh take on an old story.” With that being said, Curry has set his production of “Cinderella” in the 1950s. “The beautiful score, the story, and the theme of hope are the same,” Curry says. “But the aesthetic look will be very different and quite magical.” Assisting with the task of creating magic on the stage, Curry has assembled an exceptional team comprised of some of the finest artists working in theater, television, and film. Paul Miller, Broadway lighting designer (“Legally Blonde,” “Amazing Grace,”“MacBeth,” “Hairspray!”) will lend his talents to this new adaptation of the classic ballet. Karen Perry, award-winning television and film costume designer, will be responsible for the styling of the vintage costumes. Chris Takashima of Much Ado Tu-

tus and Debra Bradley have created all the fantasy costumes for the Fairy Godmother and the Season Fairies. Animation design is by Shane Rutkowski, and props and set pieces are by Dan Mato and Ralph DeLuca of M.A.D. Props. Eglevsky Ballet member Ali Paige Block will portray the title character. Block is a professional ballet and contemporary dancer based in New York City. She danced with Texas Ballet Theater and Eugene Ballet Company before moving to New York City in 2014. In New York, Block has danced with Claudia Schreier, Eglevsky Ballet, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Edward Morgan Ballet, Exit12 Dance, and Brookoff Dance Repertory Company. With the Columbia Ballet Collaborative, she has worked with choreographers Emory LeCrone, Claudia Schreier, and Barry Kerollis. She has also danced with Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, Sarasota Ballet, and as a guest artist with Verb Ballets. Additionally, she studies psychology at Columbia University.

Daniel Mantei will dance the role of Prince Nicolas. Mantei joined American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in 2002 and American Ballet Theatre’s corps de ballet in 2003. His roles with ABT included a dancing gentleman in Manon, Paris in “Romeo and Juliet,” the Russian Dance in “The Nutcracker,” leading male roles in “Continuo” and “Amazed in Burning Dreams,” and roles in “Black Tuesday,” “Duets,” “Jardin aux Lilas” and “Thirteen Diversions.” While at ABT, Mantei’s dance aesthetic became influenced by his mentor Maggie Black. As a choreographer, Mantei has created “Armaments,” “Tolling Bells,” and “Stare Decisis” for American Ballet Theatre. He has also created works for Columbia Ballet Collaborative, New York Theatre Ballet and The Seattle Symphony. Throughout the history of the ballet “Cinderella,” the step-sisters are often portrayed en travesti (by a performer of the opposite sex). Continuing this tradition, Curry has developed it even further. Two guest dancers from the world-renowned troupe, Les Ballets Trockaderos, Alberto Pretto and Kevin Garcia, will appear as the step-sisters. Les Ballets Trockaderos (or “The Trocks” as they are affectionately known) are an American all-male ballet corps which parodies the conventions and clichés of romantic and classical ballet. The dancers perform as both men and women and dancing en pointe. Curry said, “It has been so much fun choreographing for these dancers! In most productions of ‘Cinderella,’ the laughs come from silly bits of movement — quirky little

steps. Because of the high skill level of these dancers, I have been able to fuel their acting with more comic moments and yet have more bravura moments in their dancing.” The Fairy Godmother will be danced by Brittany Larrimer, who performed with Texas Ballet Theatre before relocating to New York City to train on full scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School; later joining the Joffrey Ensemble. Larrimer joined Ajkun Ballet Theatre in New York City and performed an extensive range of classical and contemporary repertory as a principal dancer across the U.S., Europe and Australia. Brittany’s guest performances include Cyprus DanceAssociation, Dancers Responding to Aids, Dance Chicago and Universita di Danza e Teatro. This is her first season with Eglevsky Ballet. This year marks the 100th birth of the founder of Eglevsky Ballet, André Eglevsky. It also marks the first time in over two decades the Eglevsky Ballet has presented a spring season. Curry says, “To celebrate this centennial birth of Mr. Eglevsky with a new production seemed appropriate. His vision was to bring the best of ballet and dance arts to Long Island. It is my hope this production will contribute to the organization’s mission and inspire and entertain our audiences.” The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts is located at 720 Northern Blvd. in Brookville. For tickets, go to www.tillescenter.org or call the Tilles Center box office at 516-299-3100, Monday through Saturday, 1 to 6 p.m.

Cabaret theatre at Adelphi University To close out the Adelphi Performing Arts Center’s celebratory 10th anniversary season, the students of the Department of Theatre bring you a rare cabaret production written by Jonathan Larson ’81, creator of the Tony Awardwinning musical RENT, and Nicholas Petron, chair of the Department of Theatre, in which Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles meet in 1940s Chicago to solve a murder. Performances will take place from May 3-6 in the Black Box Theatre in the Adelphi PAC, 1 South Ave. in Garden City. As a student at Adelphi, Larson had the idea to create a cabaret-style show with a single plot line running through it – though most cabarets feature a selection of unrelated songs and sketches. Nick Petron agreed to the idea, and inspired by the 1940s ďŹ lm noir style, the two created a whodunnit cabaret show in just nine days, with Larson composing music and Petron writing book and lyrics. The show took shape through rehearsals with the cast, and at a time they were uncertain that they had a

show at all: the night before it opened, Petron asked the students, “do we even have a show?â€? He was met with a resounding aďŹƒrmation from the cast. “I wasn’t sure we had a show at all,â€? Petron recalls. “But Jonathan knew.â€? Cabaret Theatre – alternately titled The Steak Tartare Caper or Behind Every Moan is a Woman – has only been performed one other time since its original production during a scholarship celebration on the Adelphi campus. Don’t miss this celebratory performance! The Adelphi PAC is one of Long Island’s premier cultural arts venues for entertainment of all kinds. Tickets are currently on sale for $20 with discounts available to seniors, students and alumni. Information is available online at pac.adelphi.edu or at the Lucia and Steven N. Fischer Box OďŹƒce at 516.877.4000 or boxoďŹƒce@adelphi. edu. A ‘Drag’ cabaret fundraiser in Babylon May is truly a drag for the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus, but in the best possible way. Hair, heels, attitude and song will fill the Babylon American Legion on Saturday, May 12 when chorus members — some performing in their most inspired fancy dress — will take the stage for the “May’s a Drag” cabaret. In addition to LIGMC members, the bill includes guest performers from Long Island and New York City’s galaxy of drag stars. “Our annual drag cabaret is one of our most exciting fundraising events,” said Tony Mazza, an LIGMC board member. “Every year, we team up with a talented cast of local drag queens to put on an amazing show that includes traditional drag queen lip-syncing as well as live vocal performances.”

Toni Homeperm

Annie Manildoo — one of several Long Island queens set to perform — is the event’s hostess, and she’s ready for action “Annie time, Annie place, Annie way you want her!” “Being that I often sing live, I appreciate what the Gay Men’s Chorus does immensely and am more than happy to support them in any way possible,” Manildoo said. “This is a show you won’t want to miss!” Scheduled featured drag performers include Ivy Stalls, who has vowed to shower the festivities with “peace, love and rainbows,” and Bella Noche, New York City’s renowned Mermaid Queen. Drag trailblazer and La Cage alumna Alexis Flame is a special featured performer. Guest stars include “motherdaughter” tandem Anita Moorehead and Toni Homeperm, as well as Pride Entertainment & Events founder Olivia London. Showtime at the American Legion, located at 22 Grove Place in Babylon, is 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and available at the door and online at ligmc.org. Now in its 10th anniversary season, the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus is a voluntary, not-for-profit, communitybased organization that provides diverse audiences with high-quality choral performances and musical experiences. LIGMC uses music to unite the LGBT community, fight prejudice and discrimination, and affirm the contributions of the LGBT community to the region’s cultural life.

HITLER VS PICASSO BOW TIE SQUIRE CINEMAS 115 MIDDLE NECK ROAD, GREAT NECK

In 1937 the Nazi regime held two exhibitions in Munich: one to stigmatize “degenerate art,” and one, personally curated by Hitler, to glorify “classic art.” Narrated by Toni Servillo (star of Oscar® winner The Great Beauty), Hitler vs Picasso and the Others is an incredible journey through four exhibitions, displaying masterpieces by Botticelli, Klee, Matisse, Monet, Chagall, Renoir, and Gauguin. Linked to each exhibition are moving stories of those who witnessed the systematic destruction and looting of the day. Revealing the Nazi obsession with art, Hitler vs Picasso and the Others offers viewers a rare look at condemned works that have finally come to light.

Charlotte’s Web at Adelphi on May 12 Wilbur is a terrific pig – and his spider friend Charlotte is going to use her spinning talent to tell the world and help Wilbur avoid becoming pork chops! Theatreworks USA presents the timeless story of friendship in this production at 2:00 p.m. on May 12 on the Westermann Stage, Concert Hall in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, 1 South Ave in Garden City. This production is recommended for children in grades K-5 and their families. Wilbur has a problem: how to avoid

winding up as pork chops! Charlotte, a fine writer and true friend, hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman — she will create a “miracle.” Spinning the words “Some Pig” in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but also ensures his place on the farm forever. This treasured tale, featuring mad-cap and endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship.
