YOUR GUIDE TO THE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DINING

CELEBRATING LOCAL RADIO BY B I L LY F I T Z PAT R I C K Next Friday, the Town of North Hempstead and its radio show “Project Independence and You” will celebrate eight years of broadcasting while serving senior citizens across northern Nassau County. The show is based on – and named after – Project Independence, the town’s aging in place program that provides programs and services that assist senior residents who wish to remain in their own homes. These services include transportation for groceries and medical visits, help with home maintenance, nursing and social work services, fitness classes and community education, along with many others. “It’s really an amazing show,” said show producer Kristina Lew, who also works with the town Department of Services for the Aging. “We have the privilege of really getting all of this information out to our audience and caregivers, which is incredible.” Lew has been the producer of the show since its inception in 2011 and has worked with a variety of hosts and co-hosts over the eight years the show has been on the air. Despite not having a background in radio, Lew has successfully put out a show every Friday from 10 a.m. to noon on 88.1 FM WCWP, Long Island University’s college radio station, after a licensing opportunity with the FCC fell through. “The FCC was going to give a license to us, and it sounded great on paper, but it was going to be a 24/7 thing,” said Lew.

From left to right, Project Independence and You show producer Kristina Lew, show engineer Victoria Onorato, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, co-host Otto Lohse and host John Ryan. “It gives me anxiety just thinking about programming for that. After calling around, we reached out to Dan [Cox], who’s the director of broadcasting here at LIU, and he said he wanted to branch out and not just be a college radio station because senior citizens are still listening to radio.” “We’re not looking for anyone to put on a presentation,”

said Otto Lohse, who has been one of the show’s co-hosts for all eight years. “We don’t want the host or co-host to be like a shock jock. It’s not like a political environment to me, and I think that’s important.” Each week, the Project Independence team is joined by a guest, considered to be an expert in a field. The guests vary from week to week, but each has a

common theme: they all speak about a topic that could have an impact on senior citizens or their caregivers. Lew is responsible for booking the guests to appear on the show, while the rest of the crew studies up on the topic for the week. “Everybody does a little homework before, so we can have a halfway decent conversation,” said Lohse, on the people

he meets each week. “But she makes all the phone calls, we just show up and they’re here!” While Lew is the one who schedules the interviews, she isn’t alone in finding the experts for the show’s interview segments. “I have our co-hosts or other seniors call me up and tell me ‘I met this doctor’ or ‘I have this great topic of interest’ … and I become a detective to try and hunt down the appropriate person to talk about that topic,” explained Lew. “I’ll also have organizations contact me about the show, saying they want to be on here. It’s all different venues and we’re always trying to stay up to date on new trends.” As for the rest of the show’s format, the two interviews take up the first hour, with each guest receiving approximately 30 minutes to discuss a topic. The second hour consists of a 30-minute “Old Time Radio” segment, which brings senior listeners back to the era in which radio programming was the primary source for entertainment. The other 30 minutes is the “Talk of the Town” segment, which is when Lew hops on the mic herself and talks about the different events and programs happening in the Town of North Hempstead or nearby. She said that the “Talk of the Town” is more than just what’s going on in the Town of North Hempstead. “The format we have here is a roundtable discussion,” said Lew. “We say it’s like sitting around drinking coffee at your dining room table with your friends.” Continued on Page 62

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

AGT star Tom Cotter at Madison Theatre BY TOM M CC A RT HY “America’s Got Talent” funny man Tom Cotter said he is excited to entertain Long Islanders for his first-ever performance at the Madison Theatre at Molloy College in Rockville Centre on Friday. “Long Island is the mecca of comedy,” Cotter said. “There’s something in the water, it breeds funny.” Cotter, a native Rhode Islander, said that some of his favorite comedians have come from Long island, including Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano and Rosie O’Donnell. Cotter said that Long Islanders should expect “two hours of material in one,”

Comedian Tom Cotter was a contestant during the 7th season of “America’s Got Talent.”

which he says is his “modus operandi” of comedy. He said that New York audiences, especially ones on Long Island, connect with his comedy better than other states. He said his act resonates with the wit of Bostonians and New Yorkers. The comedian said he was making “OK money” until he “stepped in leprechaun crap” when he was accepted as a contestant for the seventh season of “America’s Got Talent” in 2012. He champions himself as “the first comedian ever to be a finalist on the show” and said he was “the highest finishing human being on the show that year.” Cotter placed second to the “Olate Dogs” act. Olate Dogs is a dog trick act featuring father-and-son trainers Richard and Nicholas Olate, Cotter said. Cotter has made subsequent appearances on the show. His appearances since “America’s Got Talent” include “The Tonight Show,” “Last Comic Standing,” his own episode of “Comedy Central Presents,” “The Howard Stern Show,” “Comics Unleashed” and having multiple appearances on CBS’ “The Late Late Show.” His bio also said he is a frequent guest on the Fox News Channel. “They’re a smart audience, they get it right away,” Cotter said about Long Island audiences. He said he is excited to do his rapidfire style of comedy in Rockville Centre, but joked, “I can’t stand the traffic” on Long Island.

Gold Coast presents Adelphi announces fall ‘Back to Berlin’ 2019 season choices The Gold Coast International Film Festival will present the highly acclaimed 2018 documentary “Back to Berlin,â€? which chronicles the epic 2015 journey from Tel Aviv to the site of Hitler’s infamous 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The screening will be on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Great Neck Squire Cinemas, 115 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck. Tickets cost $15, or $10 for students and can be ordered online at www. goldcoastartscenter.org, or can be purchased at the door, subject to availability. “Back to Berlinâ€? cameras followed motorcyclists along their moving and inspirational journey as they crossed nine European countries, covering 4,500 kilometers (2,796 miles) over 24 days. En route, each country held a chilling resonance for the group, which included Holocaust survivors, descendants of survivors and the grandson of a 1930’s Maccabiah Rider. In 2015, the European Maccabi Games (aka the Jewish Olympics) were held at the site of Hitler’s infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics for the ďŹ rst time since WWII. Part biker-ick, part Holocaust documentary, “Back to Berlinâ€? follows 11 Israeli motorbikers carrying the Maccabi

torch from Tel Aviv to Berlin, retracing the tracks of the original 1930s Maccabiah riders who traveled to all corners of Europe to seek out athletes to compete in the ďŹ rst Maccabiah Games. Upon conclusion of the screening, there will be a Q&A session with the ďŹ lm’s director, Catherine Lurie-Alt, a London-based journalist, director and producer, who has written, produced and directed eight television human interest stories, including the 2013 Maccabiah Games for the Los Angeles-based Jewish Life Television. “In 2012, I was asked to be a broadcaster for the Maccabi 2013 Games in Israel by the LA-based TV station, JLTV,â€? says Lurie-Alt. “I came across the fascinating stories of the three heroic missions of the 1930’s Jewish motorcyclists. It was the words of Yair Hamburger, Maccabi World Union’s chairman, ‘Maccabi saved my family from the nails of the Nazis,’ that would resonate and later lead me into ďŹ lmmaking. When hearing that Germany would host the Maccabi European Games in July 2015, the title ‘Back to Berlin’ came to me for everything it symbolizes.â€?
