YOUR GUIDE TO THE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND DINING
TASTES OF FALL ON L.I. BY B I L LY F I T Z PAT R I C K
S
eptember is officially underway, which means soon enough the leaves will be changing colors, the mornings are going to feel a lot cooler, and apple and apple cider-flavored treats will begin popping up in your local supermarkets. Caramel apples, apple cider donuts, apple pie – if it has apples in it, you can expect it to take over the food scene one way or another. However, that doesn’t mean you have to rely on the grocery stores to have your favorite item in stock. There are plenty of spots across Long Island that will allow you to either pick your own apples or are already selling the pre-made sweet treats – along with plenty of other delicious goods – ready to take home today. Jericho Cider Mill – Located on Route 106 in Jericho, the popular location has been providing Long Island with appleflavored goodies for 199 years. From common items like apple cider, apple pies and apple donuts to the more unusual selections such as apple salsa and apple butter, the possibilities are endless at Jericho Cider Mill for your taste buds to enjoy. The location has consistent hours all seven days a week, opening at 9
a.m. daily and closing at 6 p.m. More information can be found online, as well as an online store, at www.jerichocider.com. Richters Orchard – Put 1318 Pulaski Road, Northport into your GPS and you’ll end up at the driveway to Richters Orchard – a farm that has been in business for over 100 years selling quality fruit and fresh pressed apple cider right in their barn. Richters Orchard just reopened last month, as it operates from August to May each year. Besides fresh apple cider, it also has plenty of sweet apple treats for sale in its gift
shop. Give Richters Orchard a call at 631-2611980 to learn more about what’s in stock. Lewin Farms – Located just a few miles west of the North Fork, Lewin Farms is ready for Long Islanders to enjoy its variety of crops that you can pick yourself. Enjoy the cooler weather and spend the day outside at the farm’s Calverton location selecting your own fruit and picking it right where it grew. Lewin Farms also has a farm stand, offering a full line of fresh fruits and vegetables grown on the farm, as well as other local Long Island produce.
Head to www.lewinfarm. com for more info. Harbes Family Farm – Officially open as of Aug. 31, the Harbes Family Farm’s orchard is another spot in eastern Long Island where families can go and pick their own apples to take home. There are plenty of apples to choose from at Harbes, located at 5698 Sound Ave. in Riverhead, such as zestar, sansa, blondee, gale gala and honeycrisp apples and with so many more on the way, the decision won’t be an easy one. The 78-acre orchard will also host its apple festival on Saturday, Sept. 14, and
Sunday, Sept. 15, in case you were having trouble choosing a day to take a trip out east. More information can be found online at www.harbesfamilyfarm.com. Woodside Orchards – Family-owned and operated since 1982, Woodside Orchards in both Jamesport and Aquebogue will be opening its U-Pick apple picking in mid-September and will continue through Columbus Day weekend next month. Depending on what’s ripe and the weekend, a variety of different apples can be had each week and can be hand-
picked in the fields. Woodside also has a cider tasting room at its Aquebogue location that offers flights, pints, take-home growlers and is pet friendly, so don’t leave man’s best friend behind at home. For more information on everything Woodside Orchards has to offer, visit www.woodsideorchards.com. Kerber’s Farm – Founded in 1941, Kerber’s Farm began as a poultry farm in Huntington before adding a farm stand and pie shop. After being purchased in 2013, Kerber’s Farm now produces a line of packaged goods that are sold around the country through hundreds of stores, with plenty of items available to be bought at 309 West Pulaski Road. With items ranging from apple jams and apple pies that can be delivered to your front door to a variety of fruit preserves and a buttermilk pancake gift set, there’s plenty to choose from at Kerber’s Farm. To check out what’s in stock or to place an order online, just head to www.kerbersfarm.com. Youngs Farm – Located in Old Brookville, Youngs Farm has a wide variety of fresh produce ready for you to pick up immediately – both grown on-site and brought in from other locations across Long Island. Besides just fruits and vegetables, Youngs Farm offers fresh baked pies for that latenight snack you were searching for. From the classics like apple pie and apple crisp to blueberry and dark cherry pies, you can’t go wrong with any choice you make for a tasty dessert. More information, including a complete list of produce and pies currently being offered at Youngs Farm, can be found at www.youngs.farm.

in Nassau County. Chefs from The Cook’s Studio will be there with us to showcase the variety of hands-on culinary classes we oer, everything from paella and Chinese dumplings to mozzarella and fresh pasta. Belmont Uncorked will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14

‘On the Way to the Waterfall’ in Sea Cliff After releasing her most successful album to date, renowned musician, actress, playwright and author Meghan Cary will be starring in a one-woman play at the Creative Arts Studio of Sea Cli. Her album, Sing Louder, made its debut at No. 6 on the US/International Folk DJ radio charts. Chronicling her journey to making music, the play, “On the Way to the Waterfallâ€? will tell Cary’s story of how she ďŹ nally learned to embraced her life’s purpose. In the play, Cary, who labels herself an “accidental musician,â€? takes the audience on an emotional ride from studying pre-med at Duke University to working as a successful actor and voice over artist before ultimately picking up a guitar and pen, and earning a “Critic’s Choice Awardâ€? from Billboard, with no previous music experience after the devastating passing of her ďŹ ancĂŠe. “This play takes a hard look at the way we choose to respond to the inevitable complete derailments in life,â€? said Cary. “When our lives are shattered by an unforeseen disaster, is it tragedy? Or is the repeated reinventing of oneself what life is all about?â€?. “On The Way To The Waterfallâ€? was written by Cary and includes some of her original songs that are integral to the story, although she says it isn’t really a musical. The play ďŹ rst made its debut in Boulder, CO at the Boulder
Town Colorado. The Sea Cli performance will be the ďŹ rst time the show has been remounted since the production and release of Sing Louder. The performance starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are available
Fringe Fest in 2014 and was then performed at a few pop-up shows in Cary’s hometown of Philadelphia the following year. It immediately received rave reviews from fans and critics alike and was hailed as “raw and powerful by My
at www.meghancarywaterfall.brownpapertickets.com. The Creative Arts Studio of Sea Cli is located at 256 Sea Cli Avenue in Sea Cli. For more information about Meghan Cary, visit www. meghancary.com.

Celebrating Bryant, Whitman with pageant The Friends of Cedarmere presents “Kindred Wayfarers,” an historical pageant conceived and produced by Paul Baserman. “Kindred Wayfarers” celebrates milestone birthday anniversaries this year of the great journalists, philanthropists and poets William Cullen Bryant at 225 and Walt Whitman at 200. “Kindred Wayfarers” is directed by Baserman with the creative forces of Beth Jucovy, Scott Payne and Fred Stroppel, featuring community players and local musicians with Dance Visions NY. Dance Visions NY, under the direction of Jucovy, is providing the dance element for this event. Included are dance divertissements and enhancements for the theatrical narrative, the procession, “The Unfurling of the Hudson,” and featured dance presentations. These include an embellished version of Isadora Duncan’s “Roses from the South” with live percussion, original dance works to two WC Bryant poems and Duncan’s “Water Study,’’ illustrating an excerpt from Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” The pageant will conclude with a interactive dance party performed to taped and live music of Carla Cook’s ”Dem Bones.” Dance Visions NY is delighted to be part of this multifaceted, multi-disciplinary historical celebration. The company brings Duncan’s artistic legacy into the
present through the presentation of authentic Duncan works, as passed on to Jucovy through her second generation Duncan mentors, as well as through presentation of highly original, contemporary works often inspired by Duncan’s aesthetic. Dancers and collaborators include Jucovy, as well as Louisa Cathcart, Ligia Gaissionok, Samuel Humphreys, Hope Kroog, Rebekah Mulkey, Michelle Tilghman, Francis Walker Dance Visions NY’s participation in the Cedarmere program is made possible in part with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered by The Huntington Arts Council. “Kindred Wayfarers” will take place at the Cedarmere preserve, located at 225 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor. The performance will begin Saturday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. with the rain date scheduled for the following day. There will also be another performance of “Kindred Wayfarers” at Bryant Park in Manhattan on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. with a rain date scheduled for the following week, Sept. 28. Taking a flight back in time on a C-47 The American Airpower Museum’s C-47 will take passengers on a 75th DDay Anniversary living history ight experience on Sept. 14. Onboard each ight, WWII re-enactors will transport you back in time to the day before Normandy. The Museum’s living history educational program is so popular that it was covered by the New York Times, Daily News, Newsday, Air Classics Magazine and ABC TV to name a few. The cost is $350 per person. There’s reduced pricing for Museum members and the person ying can bring one guest to visit the museum free of charge. Stories of our nation’s “Greatest Generation,â€? heroes of the Normandy D-Day Invasion, are being retold to a new generation of Americans. The American Airpower Museum takes the next step and turns these events into living history so one can hear, see, touch and experience how it was on the “Night of Nightsâ€? that launched D-Day, or the daytime “Operation Market Gardenâ€? airdrop into Holland in September 1944. To honor the C-47 troop carrier crews and soldiers of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, we have created a totally unique experience. With help from our 101st Airborne volunteer historians, you are transported back in time and issued your M-1942 jump jacket, helmet, and harness.
You take part in an Airborne mission brief and then “form upâ€? with your guides in full WWII 101st Airborne gear. Next, you board the Museum’s WWII C-47, just like our heroes did 75 years ago, risking all to liberate occupied Europe. On the C-47, experience sights and sounds as engines ďŹ re up and you take o into history. During the ight, you’ll observe the aircrew operating their C-47 and paratroopers prepping for battle. Relive the Airborne experience to the point when you hook your parachute to a static line. Although you might like to, you won’t leave the airplane until you’re safely back on the ground!! Upon returning from this exciting ight, you learn what our heroes did 75 years ago, how they helped achieve victory for the allies, culminating in the Nazi surrender. This is a family-friendly experience for all ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. The program is about 1.5 hours long and the ight part takes 25 minutes. All ight operations are subject to change and rescheduling due to weather, maintenance or crew availability. Cost of the C-47 ight is $350. The museum conducts up to three ights that day. Your contribution supports our mission to honor Veterans and U.S. aviation history by preserving the aircraft and their legacy for future generations.
