A cappella, with a modern twist
I
f the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivy-adorned campuses… think again. Straight No Chaser are neither straitlaced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act that will make its way to The Paramount on Thursday, May 2 at 8 p.m. Straight No Chaser has had an amazing decade. Ten years after turning a collegiate hobby into a recording career that has taken them around the world on tour, the a cappella group tells its story through music on their new release, One Shot. Theirseventh LP features 16 genre-spanning songs, and 10 entertaining conversational interludes, as the group’s members trace their unlikely rise from an undergraduate singing group at Indiana University to a beloved act with a devoted international fanbase. Recorded mostly in Bloomington, Ind., the track list for One Shot reflects that sense of now or never, starting with the first single “Motownphilly/This Is How We Do It,” an energetic mash-up of Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. The song’s lyrics about chasing improbable success captured the way the singers felt as undergrads. Straight No Chaser made Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” a staple of its repertoire in college. Adding “Motownphilly,” with its lyrics about chasing improbable suc-
cess, captured the way the singers felt as students. “The lyrics from the Boyz II Men song fit our experience… We dreamed about this and now we are doing it, performing all over the world,” said Randy Stine, an original member. It took a few years. After the founding members of the group graduated in 1999, they got jobs, found love, and made lives for themselves as new undergrads replaced them in the group on campus. In 2006, Stine posted a clip on YouTube of Straight No Chaser singing “The 12 Days of Christmas” at a 1998 performance, and it went viral. Atlantic Records Chairman and CEO Craig Kallman saw it and contacted the guys to see if they would be interested in reuniting to make an album. It wasn’t necessarily an easy decision. “It was scary to jump into because we were giving up life as we knew it,” Stine says. “I envisioned it as a boat leaving the pier. Either you’re going to jump on and make the boat or you’re not. And I thought, ‘Even if the boat sinks and I have to swim back to shore, so be it.'” Farfrom sinking, the group has only picked up speed on the way to making One Shot. “Every year it gets better and better,” says member Tyler Trepp. “We keep surprising ourselves in a good way, and it just keeps growing.” Along with Stine and Trepp, the current lineup features Walter Chase, Jerome Collins, Seggie Isho, Michael Luginbill, Charlie Mechling, Steve Morgan, and David Roberts. They all have a hand in choosing songs, which mirror the singers’ widespread musical tastes, ranging from R&B and old-school funk to folk and classic rock. In addition to “Motownphilly/This Is How We Do It,” the group tackles Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way,” James Brown’s
“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” and Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman,” a soulful ode to the singers’ significant others. There’salso a take on Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend,” Johnny Cash’s version of “I’ve Been Everywhere,” and a yearning for the comforts of family life on a richly harmonized version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound.” “We all rallied around that song because it really spoke to life on tour,” Stine says. “We are loving what we’re doing, but there’s always a bit of you that’s missing home. Especially with all of us being parents now, it’s that much tougher when you leave.” So much of what Straight No Chaser has done over the past 10 years is the stuff of dreams: They’ve collaborated with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dolly Parton, to name a few. They’ve performed on NBC’s “Today Show” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” They’ve toured North America, Europe, and Australia, and consistently rank among Pollstar’s top 100 touring acts in North America. “We literally have to pinch ourselves every day that this actually happened,” Collins says. “Now we’re 10 years still in the game, and we’re still a successful act. We started this just for fun and now we’re doing it as a career.” And Straight No Chaser hasno intention of stopping — it’s just too much fun. “We’re going to ride this train,” Trepp says. “Each tour is something new, and we’re always surprised at the things we get to do.” For tickets to the show, go to www.paramountny. com. The Paramount is located at 370 New York Ave. in Huntington.

Jonathan Edwards to bring ‘Sunshine’ to Port Warm as summer sunshine, real as the truth, and intimate as a long overdue visit between old friends… such is a Jonathan Edwards concert. Four decades into a stellar career of uncompromising musical integrity, the man simply delivers, night after night, songs of passion, insight and humor — all rendered in a pure and powerful tenor which, like fine wine, has only grown sweeter with age. This is one veteran performer who is neither grizzled nor nostalgic. These days, Edwards is likely to be found on the road doing what he does best, which is playing live in front of an audience. “I’ve been concentrating on that and loving it,” he says. An artist who measures his success by his ability to attract and take good care of an audience, Edwards maintains that it is the feedback he receives after his shows that keeps him going. “It is really gratifying to hear (someone say), ‘Your stuff has meant a lot to me over the years.’”
The “stuff ” he’s referring to is a highly respected repertoire that includes song classics such as “Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy,” “Sometimes,” “One Day Closer,” “Don’t Cry Blue,” “Emma,” “Everybody Knows Her,” “Athens County,” and everyone’s favorite ode to putting a good buzz on, “Shanty.” And then, of course, there’s the anthemic “Sunshine (Go Away Today),” that fierce proclamation of protest and independence that resonated with thousands of frustrated and angry young men and women when it was first released in 1971. Almost 40 years later, the song continues to be embraced by faithful followers and new fans alike. Since ’71, Edwards has released 15 albums, including Blue Ridge, his standard-setting collaboration with bluegrass favorites, the Seldom Scene, and Little Hands, his collection of children’s songs, which was honored with a National Library Association award. As for his latest, 16th album, Edwards says, “Young people that are getting back to the land and trying to get off the power grid encourage me. My next studio album will reflect some of those themes.” Edwards’ music — the old and the new — will be the evening’s entertainment at My Father’s Place on Friday, May 3 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available by going to www.myfathersplace.com. My Father’s Place in the Roslyn Hotel is located at 1221 Old Northern Blvd. in Roslyn.
Excitement is building to a fever pitch as the finalists have been named in the 2019 Your Big Break talent competition presented by the Gold Coast Arts Center, Love Revolution Org, and the Rick Eberle Agency. Finals will take place on Saturday, May 4 at the Gold Coast Arts Center, 113 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with the first act taking the stage at 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $20 at the door. Online tickets can be purchased at http://bit. ly/2UESBew. Now in its seventh year, Your Big Break contestants get the chance to perform before music business insiders while competing for great prizes, hoping to get that “big break” to propel their careers to the next level. This year’s final competition will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock by performing songs by artists who appeared at the iconic music festival, including numbers by Joan Baez, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and The Who. The final performers will have the opportunity to meet with experienced music industry professionals they have selected to serve as their mentors before the final performance to provide advice to help them compete, with the ultimate goal of winning and advancing their careers in the performing arts. The finalists vying to be named the winner of this year’s Your Big Break competition include Jackie Romeo, a 15-year-old resident of Massapequa whose musical genre includes soul, pop and R&B. She has been singing since childhood, but has gotten serious with her music over the last two years. Romeo has performed with Long Island native, singer, songwriter, producer and actress Debbie Gibson and her Electric Youth Workshop. She has sung the national anthem for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Music in the Parks concerts. She will perform “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane in the final competition, and is being mentored by Long Islander Cass Dillon, a songwriter, producer, sound mixer, and engineer who has toured with Billy Joel. Another final contender is Over the Garden Wall, a band formed by Westbury resident Jonathan Gardyn, along with Ryan Wall of Valley Stream, and Garden City’s Aidan Larenas, previous performers who play classic rock and are currently experimenting with original music. Actively searching for members of the new band, Wall was put into contact with Grey Wilson and elementary school classmate Sarah Hock, both of Valley Stream. Wall and Gardyn attended the School of Rock in Rockville Centre with Grey. The band’s performance in the finals will be “Can’t Explain” by The Who. Over the Garden Wall is being mentored in the Your Big Break competition by David Caggiano, a record producer, songwriter, and mix engineer who served as stage manager for Art Garfunkel from 2007 to 2013. Finalist Arizona Lindsey, a 22-year-old aspiring country-pop singer/songwriter from Lindenhurst, gave a passionate vocal performance with heartfelt and powerful lyrics in
the semi-finals. She is also a passionate mental health advocate who strives to de-stigmatize mental health issues through her music and intimate conversations with her fanbase. Lindsey recently released a single and accompanying music video, “The Desired Way,” that tackled topics such as grief, loss and how to help those who may be grieving. She will perform the Joan Baez hit, “The Last Thing on My Mind,” and is being mentored in the competition by Lem Payne, Jr., an accomplished singer, songwriter, and producer with major label credits and national touring experience as a performer. A Band Called Sad, an alternative rock band that performs with an undercurrent of sadness that captures a certain nostalgia for events of what could have been, is another contender. The band consists of front men Marlon Marcy and Taylor Crawford and some alternating performers, all of whom have been influenced by Radiohead, the Smiths, the Talking Heads, and others. The New York City-based group will be performing the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young classic, “Wooden Ships.” Mentoring the band is Long Island native and music industry executive, Jason Melker. Rounding out the five finalists is Lydia von Hof, a 16-year old singer, piano player, and songwriter from Commack who has performed as a soloist at a New York Knicks half-time show at Madison Square Garden, The Bitter End in NYC, and the Hard Rock Café in Boston, and was a finalist in last year’s Your Big Break. She has performed as a singer and pianist at New York City venues such as the Broadway Comedy Club, The Duplex cabaret club, and with the New York Opera Exchange. von Hof will perform “Summertime” by Janis Joplin, and is being mentored by Mark Ambrosino, who has written for artists and composed music for television shows, films and commercials, including “HBO Sports,” “The Sopranos,” “Chicago Fire,” “One Life to Live,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Rescue Me,” Mercedes Benz and Budweiser, to name a few. In addition to the talented acts contending to be the Your Big Break champion, there will be a special performance by last year’s winner, All Types of Kinds, a band that plays a variety of music ranging from rock to pop, folk, punk, funk, hip-hop, blues and country — even sometimes all at once. The band’s members come from diverse backgrounds that make for an amalgamation of musical textures and vibes. Their EP, “Love Songs (or Songs For Your Ex)” debuted in 2018. Prizes in the Your Big Break competition include the chance to open for national acts at major venues like The Paramount in New York City, recording time at Mix Place, public relations and social media campaign management, including booking and label consultation with the Rick Eberle Agency, musical equipment from All Music Inc. and ZOOM North America, a homepage feature on ReverbNation.com, and a feature article in Good Times Magazine. Irwin Winkler talk at Comic Jim Gaffigan to Cinema Arts Center perform at Paramount Scenes in the movies were filmed at Hildebrandt’s, the soda shop and ice cream parlor in Williston Park that dates back to the 1920s. Winkler’s autobiography, “A Life in Movies: Stories from 50 Years in Hollywood” (May 7; Abrams Press), tells the stories of his career through his many films as a producer and then as a writer and director, charting the changes in Hollywood over the past decades. Winkler started in the famous William Morris mailroom and made his first film starring Elvis Presley in the last days of the old studio system. Beginning in the late 1960s, and then for decades to come, Winkler produced a string of provocative and influential films, making him one of the most critically lauded, prolific, and commercially successful producers of his era. Filled with tales of legendary and beloved films, as well as some not-solegendary and forgotten ones, “A Life in Movies” takes readers behind the scenes and into the history of Hollywood. Tickets to the event are $35 for the general public ($30 for CAC members) and include a copy of “A Life in Movies,” an audience Q&A and book signing. The Cinema Arts Centre is located at 423 Park Ave. in Huntington.
The Cinema Arts Centre will host a special Long Island LitFest talk with legendary film producer and director Irwin Winkler on Monday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. Winkler produced many of the biggest films in a career spanning more than 50 years, including “Rocky,” “Goodfellas,” “Raging Bull,” “De-Lovely,” “The Right Stuff,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Creed.” His films have garnered 12 Academy Awards and 52 Oscar nominations, and he is the only producer honored with three films on the American Film Institute’s list of Top 100 Films. Winkler’s latest production, “The Irishman,” directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Ray Romano, and many other leading actors, will be released later this year.

Grammy-nominated comedian, actor, writer, producer, two-time New York Times best-selling author and father of five, Jim Gaffigan is known around the world for his unique brand of humor, which largely revolves around fatherhood and his observations on life. One of the world’s highest grossing stand-up comedians, he is currently on his Noble Ape international arena and theater comedy tour, with four shows scheduled at The Paramount at 7 and 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. In 2017, Gaffigan premiered his fifth one-hour, stand-up special, Cinco, on Netflix. The same week that the album version of Cinco became available, he had six albums in the Top 10 comedy albums list on iTunes. Cinco garnered impressive reviews, with A.V. Club calling Gaffigan “one of our most intelligent observational humorists.” Along with Cinco, Gaffigan’s first four specials include Beyond the Pale (2006), King Baby (2009), Mr. Universe (2012) and Obsessed (2014). Obsessed premiered at No. 1 on iTunes, and the album earned a nomination for Best Comedy Album of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards. Gaffigan has appeared in the films “Chappaquiddick,” “Chuck,” and“You Can Choose Your Family,” has the leading role as the voice of Peng in the animated film “Duck Duck Goose,” and stars in the recently releasedcomedy, “Drunk Parents,” with

Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek. Gaffigan’s other film credits include “Three Kings,” “Hot Pursuit,” “Super Troopers” and “17 Again.” In 2016, Gaffigan and his wife, Jeannie, ended their critically-acclaimed, semifictitious television show, “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” after two seasons on TV Land. The series, lauded by the Los Angeles Times as “fun and funny,” and by People magazine as “one of summer TV’s bright spots,” was written by the couple, who also served as executive producers and showrunners. The single-camera comedy co-starred Ashley Williams, Michael Ian Black, and Adam Goldberg and revolved around one man’s struggle to balance fatherhood, stand-up comedy and an insatiable appetite. In December of 2014, Gaffigan became one of only ten comics in history to sell out Madison Square Garden and, a few months prior, he had the honor of performing for Pope Francis and more than one million festival attendees at the Festival of Families in Philadelphia. In 2013, Gaffigan’s first book, “Dad Is Fat,” debuted at No. 5 on The New York Times bestseller list and remained on the list for 17 weeks. His second book, “Food: A Love Story,” was released in the fall of 2014 and debuted at No. 3 on The New York Times bestseller list. In addition to his own television show, popular stand-up comedy and best-selling books, Gaffigan has guest starred on many television comedies and dramas, ranging from “Portlandia” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” to HBO’s cult hits “Flight of the Concords” and “Bored to Death,” to dramatic roles in all three versions of “Law & Order.” Gaffigan is also a regular commentator on “CBS Sunday Morning,” for which he won a Daytime Emmy in 2016. Mineola Choral concert at Emanuel The seventh season of Stephen C. Widom Cultural Arts at Emanuel continues on Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m., with The Message of the Masters: Let Freedom Ring!, performed by the Mineola Choral Society Chorus & Orchestra, Thomas W. Jones, conductor. History is replete with mankind’s continued struggles to bring about freedom and peace in countries, cultures and society. At this, their 71st annual Spring Concert and their third under the auspices of Stephen C. Widom Cultural Arts, the 80-voice Mineola Choral Society and orchestra turns to the music of master com-
posers — Beethoven, Handel, Rossini and Verdi — to continue that plea for liberty and brotherhood throughout the world. Max Janowsky’s setting of the blessing Sim Shalom (Create Peace) is a fitting opening for the program followed by excerpts from Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service. Then, part I of Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt depicts scenes from the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Opera choruses by Rossini (“Prayer” from Moise at Pharaon) and Verdi (“Va, pensiero” from Nabucco) dramatize the Israelites’ struggle for freedom. The concert concludes with the last movement of Beethoven’s Sym-
phony No. 9, a musical setting of Friedrich von Schiller’s Ode to Joy composed as a celebration of brotherhood and equality. This season, the Mineola Choral Society, 80 voices strong with orchestra, celebrates 71 years of presenting the highest quality choral music to Long Island communities. Jones joined the society in 2006 and is also conductor of the Huntington Men’s Chorus and the Stone House Singers, a chamber choir in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Tickets are $20 or two for $35. NON-FICTION GREAT NECK SQUIRE CINEMAS 115 MIDDLE NECK ROAD, GREAT NECK
Juliette Binoche and Guillame Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Carlos) for this wry, slyly seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer (Vincent Macaigne) begins blurring the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs—including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)—as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.
