“ he audition process at Adelphi really stood out to me. At other schools, the process was really strict and nerve-racking, but at Adelphi it was very personable and so welcoming. I instantly got this feeling that the department was very close-knit.” Colby Christina
New Adelphi student an art triple threat Has been performing since age 2
I
n the performing arts, triple threats who can act, sing and dance are highly sought-after. Colby Christina, 17, has been doing all that since the age of 2, appearing in theater and dance performances and even as the host of her own TV show. Her next step: gracing the campus as an incoming first-year student at Adelphi, where she’ll take to the stage at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, recently ranked by ClickitTicket as one of the 35 best university performing arts centers in the United States. “The audition process at Adelphi really stood out to me,” Christina says. “At other schools, the process was really strict and nerve-racking, but at Adelphi it was very personable and so welcoming. I instantly got this feeling that the department was very close-knit.” She’s arriving at Adelphi as the winner of more than 150 awards, including a prestigious Samuel H. Scripps award from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which comes with a scholarship supporting her studies in the performing arts. Christina, who is from Queens, has trained professionally in acting, singing and dance at the Restoration Center for Arts and Culture — Youth Arts Academy in Brooklyn, starting there as a pre-
schooler. Her big break came at age of 12, when she scored the lead role of Alice in her first offBroadway show, The Liberation of Mother Goose. After two sold-out performances and the thrill that came with a packed and engaged audience, Christina knew this was just the start. That same year, 2014, Christina was honored as the recipient of the prestigious AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) Rising Star Award, which recognizes excellence in black theater. Celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Kerry Washington and Sanaa Lathan have received this award in the past. “I found it really inspiring, and I want to continue to work hard to someday become a household name,” Christina says. Christina has also performed as one of the youngest members of DanceAfrica, which celebrates the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. She is also the youngest member of the Restoration Youth Arts Ensemble. In 2016, Christina started her own talk show, “Colby’s Corner,” to help teens navigate their lives socially, spiritually, professionally and more. In her show, she interviewed teens and experts on-air.
“The concept was inspired by all the supportive people I’ve met along my journey who have continued to stay in my corner,” she says. “I also wanted to give back to others and to reach out to teens to help them start their own business, help them develop leadership skills, even talk to them about the best skin care routines.” Now an alumna of the Restoration Youth Arts Academy, she will serve as an ambassador for the Center for Arts and Culture for years to come. “I want to give back to the community and the generation behind me,” Christina adds. “I also want to be a celebrity who’s approachable. I want to be a friend, a supporter, someone who’s always there for others.” Christina is thrilled to continue her acting, dance and singing career at Adelphi. “I’m excited to take my education to the next level in a concentrated and rigorous B.F.A. program. I want to find myself as an artist and want to dig even deeper to find out more of what I can do.” “I’m like an onion and there are many layers to me that I will unfold,” Christina says. “I feel like I’ve unfolded the first four, five or six layers, but I really want to get to my core. I really think I’ll be able to do that at college.”

Arts center celebrates ‘Women in Love’
INGENIOUS BUBBLE WIZARDRY.” “
-THE NEW YORKER
The Cinema Arts Centre is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary with a screening of a well-loved classic from their film repertoire, the 1969 Oscar Award-winning film “Women in Love.” With this film, director Ken Russell vaulted onto the international stage, drawing on the psychosexual radicalism of D. H. Lawrence’s classic novel to shatter taboos in his own time. Set in an English mining community on the crest of modernity, “Women in Love” traces the shifting currents of desire that link the emancipated Brangwen sisters (Jennie Linden and Oscar-winning Glenda Jackson) to a freethinking dreamer (Alan Bates) and a hard-willed industrialist (Oliver Reed) — as well as the
men’s own erotically charged friendship. Coupling earthy sensuality with kaleidoscopically stylized images, Russell pursues this quartet to the heights of agony and ecstasy, crafting a breathtaking drama of human sexuality at its most liberating, dominating, and destructive extremes. The film screening, which benefits the Vic Skolnick Life of Our Cinema Campaign, will take place on Monday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and includes a reception. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for the general public. The Cinema Arts Centre is located at 423 Park Ave. in Huntington. For more information, call 631-4237610 or go to www.cinemaartscentre.org.

‘Nutcracker’ returns to Tilles Center Eglevsky Ballet, Long Island’s premier ballet company and academy, presents its annual production of the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” featuring choreography by the company’s executive artistic director, Maurice Brandon Curry. Returning in the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy is Unity Phelan, soloist from the New York City Ballet. Phelan will be partnered by New York City Ballet Principal Jared Angle in the role of The Cavalier. Celebrated actor Chris Comfort will portray Clara’s lovable and mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer. Eglevsky Ballet brings the beloved story to the Tilles Center stage with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning costumes, thrilling choreography and a cast
of more than 100. A holiday tradition for more than 50 years, Eglevsky Ballet’s production will be performed with live music provided by the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of maestro David Bernard. Eglevsky Ballet’s production is the longest, continuously running Nutcracker production on Long Island and will be joined by select students from the Eglevsky Ballet academy to tell the story of a young girl named Clara and how a mysterious gift from her Uncle Drosselmeyer brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes. This year, Clara is being portrayed by 16-year old Erin Delargy of East Patchogue. Delargy is a junior at Syosset High School. This new production, which premiered in
2015, has a number of different elements chosen to dispense with the pas de deux usually performed by the Snow Queen and Snow King. Instead, it will be danced by Delargy and the Nutcracker Prince, portrayed by 16-year old student Lochlan Brooks. Brooks is a student at the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. The young Brooks was recommended personally by former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer and current artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, Cynthia Harvey. The two young dancers will dance a pas de deux to the music for the famous snow scene. Curry says, “By doing this, the
connection between the two characters is more developed and also gives the opportunity for Clara’s dream to have a more poignant and personal effect on our audiences.” The performances will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Greenvale. Tickets may be purchased from the Tilles Center box office or through Ticketmaster. The Eglevsky Ballet has presented “The Nutcracker” as a holiday gift for children of all ages since 1960. This exciting production is a vibrant representation of the trajectory in which Curry is leading the organization.

2 Conn.-based folk artists at Hard Luck Connecticut-based artists Belle of the Fall and Kate Callahan will share the bill during the monthly Hard Luck CafÊ series at the Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8:30 p.m. Both acts showcased their talents during this summer’s Huntington Folk Festival. Now they will perform in the Cinema Sky Room following an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Belle of the Fall is Tracy Walton and Julia Autumn Ford, an indie folk-rock Americana duo. The two met when Walton produced Ford’s solo debut album in 2014 at his studio and spent the better part of the next year
touring together as solo artists. Walton and Ford began to play on each other’s sets and sang harmonies together before becoming a duo in 2015. Walton’s weathered voice and upright bass complement Ford’s angelic vocals. Belle of the Fall has released two albums, Earthbound and Rise Up, both recorded at Walton’s On Deck Sound Studio, where Ford also now works. When they aren’t touring or working on their own projects, they are working with other artists. Callahan was Connecticut’s oďŹƒcial state troubadour from 2016 to 2018, which aorded
her the opportunity to travel and perform music throughout the state. She is among the most awarded singer-songwriters in her home state, having been named the Hartford Courant’s Woman of Character and Best SingerSongwriter in the 2017 CT Now readers poll. Callahan’s live performances feature soulful, optimistic and uplifting original music, including songs about the earth, gratitude, marriage, love and spirit, plus select songs by Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. She loves to use her voice to tell stories and weave anecdotes about the healing power of music throughout her concerts. Tickets to the show are $15 for the general public and $10 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members and will be available at the door. The Cinema Arts Centre is located at 423 Park Ave. in Huntington. For more information, call 631-425-2925 or go to www.cinemaartscentre. org or www.fmsh.org.

Feinstein eyes psychology, heart link Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research has appointed Karina W. Davidson to lead a new center focused on behavioral and cardiovascular health research. Davidson’s research focuses on the relationship between psychosocial risk factors and their role in the course and outcome of cardiovascular disease. Her new center will be located in Manhattan and comprised of a team of clinicianscientists and staff focused on disrupting the science of chronic disease management and health behavior change. Davidson will serve as dean of academic affairs, senior vice president of research, and professor and head of the new center at the Feinstein Institute, as well as professor of Behavioral Medicine at the Zucker
School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Davidson previously served as the vice dean for organizational effectiveness and Center Head at Columbia University and as the chief academic officer for New York Presbyterian Hospital. She earned her Masters of Applied Science in industrial/organizational psychology as well as her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Waterloo in Canada. “Karina joins the Feinstein Institute community of nearly 5,000 scientists and support staff and the Northwell community that treats more than 2 million patients with more than 4.3 million patient encounters per year,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, head of the Center for Health Innovations and Outcomes Research at the Feinstein Institute and senior vice presi-
dent of physician network operations at Northwell Health. “She will add to our breadth of research that can have an immediate impact on patient care.” Her current research focuses on Personalized (N-of-1) trials to identify precise therapies that improve a single patients’ symptoms, conditions, or behaviors. Dr. Davidson has been the principal investigator of more than 22 federally funded grants and authored over 200 peer reviewed articles. She was recently awarded a Transformative R01 grant to accomplish this vision of re-imagining the process by which therapies are tested in the clinical encounter, which helped identify maximal benefit and minimal harm for each individual patient. “I am thrilled to join the Feinstein In-
stitute and build a center of research experts who are focused on better treating cardiovascular diseases, which is the leading cause of death for men and women,” said Davidson. For more than 25 years, she has served in leadership roles with diverse teams focused on improving scientific and educational missions. Davidson is joining the Feinstein Institute at a critical time of expansion. “Dr. Davidson embodies our mission to produce knowledge to cure disease. As a leader in the fields of psychology and cardiology, I am delighted she will build a research program in Manhattan focusing on chronic disease management,” said Dr. Kevin J. Tracey, MD president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute.

Santa Claus visits Cohen Children’s Medical Center There were no reindeer, but thanks to the generous elves at Aflac, Santa Claus came to Cohen Children’s Medical Center with a bag of plush toy ducks and his guitar, singing holiday favorites and reading aloud to a crowded room of awe-struck patients and their parents. After reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” Santa invited each child to sit on his lap and reveal their secret holiday wish-lists. Some came with their lists at the ready; others simply asked for a big, Santa hug. When asked what Santa, himself, wishes for during this time of year, he was quick to reply, “peace on earth, and a world full of happy and healthy children.”

Highest quality rating in heart surgery The Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital has achieved three-star overall quality ratings — the highest possible ranking — in all five cardiac surgical categories analyzed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Of approximately 980 cardiothoracic surgical programs that submitted their data to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, North Shore University Hospital is one of only two cardiac programs in the U.S. and Canada to receive the society’s highest performance rating — the Society of Thoracic Surgeons is not scheduled to publicly report the full findings of its report until next year, so the identity of the other top-performing cardiac program was not disclosed. A non-profit organization representing more than 7,600 surgeons, researchers and other health professionals worldwide, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons strives to ensure the best possible outcomes for surgeries of the heart, lungs, esophagus and other procedures within the chest by enhancing the ability of cardiothoracic surgeons to provide the highest quality of care through education, research and advocacy. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating
the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, isolated aortic valve replacement surgery, CABG + AVR surgery, isolated mitral valve replacement/repair surgery, and CABG + MVRR surgery. “It is an incredible accomplishment to be recognized among the top two, highest-performing cardiothoracic surgical programs in the country by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons,” said Dr. Alan Hartman, senior vice president and executive director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Northwell Health. “Achieving a three-star, overall rating in all five cardiac surgery categories could only be possible by the amazing work and selfless commitment our staff bring
to the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital on a daily basis.” Based on the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ stringent review, the outcomes of North Shore University Hospital’s cardiothoracic surgical service were benchmarked against the other 980 cardiac programs. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Report analyzed data from participants for isolated coronary artery bypass grafting for one year (July 2017 to June 2018). The data for the other four cardiac surgical categories were analyzed over a three-year period (July 2015 to June 2018), the most recent reporting data period available. The ratings are calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures. Three other Northwell hospitals with cardiothoracic surgery programs also earned three-star quality overall ratings by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons: For the first time, Staten Island University Hospital earned a top rating for isolated coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, ranking it among the top 7.2 percent of programs nationally; Southside Hospital in Bay Shore was recognized for CABG and AVR surgery, with a national ranking in the top 4.7 percent; and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan achieved a threestar rating for isolated MVRR surgery, ranking it among the top 11.3 percent
nationally. “We are extremely proud of our colleagues at Southside, Lenox Hill and Staten Island for achieving the highest quality ratings by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in their respective cardiac surgical categories,” said Hartman. “The superior ratings reflect the leadership, expertise and collaboration of our cardiac surgery teams.” Hartman noted that participation in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons adult cardiac surgery database is voluntary, highlighting the importance of Northwell’s commitment to quality improvement. “Data on cardiothoracic surgical outcomes provides patients and their families with critical information to help them make the most-informed choices about their health care,” he added. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Star Rating summary for analyzed categories, covering data analysis for the time period ending June 2018, will be available in early 2019 for participants who have chosen to publically report results. Isolated MVRR and CABG + MVRR are newly reported categories. Northwell hospitals public reporting of these two categories will be added in summer 2019 to the STS public reporting webpage: https://www.sts.org/
Celebration planned for Clark Botanic Garden’s 50th year The Town of North Hempstead’s Clark Botanic Garden will be celebrating a major milestone in 2019 — the 50th anniversary of the 12-acre botanic garden — and plans to commemorate the occasion are already beginning to blossom. Founded in 1969 and originally called the Fanny Dwight Clark Memorial Garden of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the garden was gifted by Grenville Clark, in memory of his late wife Fanny Dwight Clark. The Town of North Hempstead acquired the park in 1989 with a conservation easement, which legally obligated the Town to conduct the garden as a botanic garden, as distinguished from a park, and to fulfill its purpose of practicing horticulture and horticultural education. Clark Botanic Garden is now part of the Town’s parks system. To help commemorate the landmark anniversary, the Town has formed a committee to begin brainstorming ideas for celebratory events, workshops and special guest lecturers. The committee consists
of members of the Garden’s non-profit organization, the Fanny Dwight Clark Memorial Garden, Inc., Town horticulturist Bonnie Klein, Parks Commissioner Jill Weber and other members of the Town’s Parks and Recreation staff. “It is with great anticipation that we have begun to plan the 50th anniversary of our much-loved Clark Botanic Garden,” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “Whether you are a master gardener, or someone who just likes to stop and smell the roses, there will be a multitude of opportunities to learn about and enjoy our botanical paradise right here in North Hempstead.” The 50th anniversary motto will be “Blooming for 50 Years.” Events planned include a “Sundays in the Garden” lecture series, featuring experts in the field of horticulture and garden design, including Jessica Damiano, Newsday’s garden columnist; Vincent Simeone, director of the Planting Fields Arboretum; and
Nelson Sterner, director of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. Throughout the summer months there will weekly concerts in the garden, as well as evening tours and other special events. For a full list of events see http://www.northhempsteadny.gov/cbg50calendar. On Sept. 21, 2019 the Fanny Dwight Clark Memorial Garden, Inc. will be holding the 50th Anniversary Garden Gala. The Gala in the Garden will include a dedication of a new moonlight garden to the Clark family, followed by music from the 1960s and an alfresco cocktail party. The Town’s NHTV also has a documentary in the works about the history of Clark Botanic Garden, with release planned for the spring.
