Folk Music Society 3 temples, ‘Hanukkah, showcase on Dec. 1 With A Twist’ show A special Members Invitational Showcase is set for Saturday, Dec. 1 as part of The Folk Music Society of Huntington’s monthly First Saturday Concerts’ series. The 8:30 p.m. concert at the Congregational Church of Huntington (30 Washington Drive, off Route 25A, in Centerport) will feature Long Island-based singer-songwriters Cassandra House, Joe Iadanza, Nico Padden, Steve Robinson, and Toby Tobias. The concert will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, priced at $25 ($20 for FMSH members), may be purchased in advance online at www.fmsh.org, using a credit card, or at the door (cash and checks only). House’s unique sound has been described as soulful, earnest and raw. She has shared the stage with such talents as Amy Helm and the Handsome Strangers, Shannon McNally, G. Love, Lucy Kaplansky, Jen Chapin and Todd Scheaffer of Railroad Earth. Her latest album is called The Roam. Recalling Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen, Iadanza’s music is rooted in classic folk. After coming on the music scene in 2007, he has released three albums, the most recent, The Social Music House, Vol. 1, was nominated by Folk Alli-

ance International and the National Folk DJs for album of the year. Padden’s original music and voice have been compared to the likes of Alanis Morisette, Brandi Carlile, and Ingrid Michaelson. Her rich, heartfelt songs and soulful voice are crowd-pleasers everywhere she performs. A multi-instrumentalist, Padden shifts effortlessly between accompanying herself on guitar, ukulele and the piano. Winner of the 2007 Long Island Blues Society’s Blues Challenge, Robinson is a native Long Islander and self-taught guitarist who has developed his own unique finger style combining driving rhythms with tasteful licks. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Tobias has immersed himself in many genres of American music while never leaving behind his roots in the rhythms and melodies of his homeland. His keen ear for intuitive arrangements is a hallmark of his writing and performance, and he has garnered a strong following on Long Island and in the tri-state area. For more information on the artists and the concert featuring folk, folk-rock, Americana, and blues stylings, visit www.fmsh.org or call 631-425-2925.

Bacher is a singer, saxophonist, songwriter and consummate performer. The New York Times calls him “a prodigiously talented musical preservationist.”

Susan Agin Bacher is a dynamic entertainer with world-class talents in music, theater, and comedy. His clean, crisp delivery is reminiscent of the true greats in entertainment. Hofstra dance concert features ‘Psalm’ A suite from “Psalm,” a dance originally choreographed by José Limón in 1967, will be performed as part of the Fall Dance Concert presented by Hofstra University’s Dance Program on Friday, Nov. 30 through Sunday, Dec. 2. Limón (1908-1972) was praised by The New York Times as the “finest male dancer of his time.” He created “Psalm” as a tribute to the Jews who died in World War II. Restaged by Adjunct Professor Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba, a former dancer

with the Limón Dance Company, the dance is based on the ancient tradition that the sorrows of the world rest with 36 “Just Men” (in Hebrew, Lamed-Vov). These men are ordinary mortals who are unaware of their station. It is believed that if even one of them were to go missing or stop being righteous, mankind would perish. This dance is the history of one such “Just Man” or, in this performance, a “Just Woman.” Other featured dances in Hofstra Fall Dance include: “Journey Hof18,” a fun

and energetic piece in abstract form using repetitive, unified, athletic, funky and very technical movement; “Tribute,” a tribute to music and dance icons who have passed on, leaving this world a much brighter place; and “Last Call,” a term usually heard at the end of the evening at a bar before closing, but in this performance represents transformative periods in the dancer’s lives. The Fall Dance Concert takes place at the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10; $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated, non-Hofstra students with I.D.Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. For tickets call the Hofstra Box Office at 516-463-6644 Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. or purchase online at Hofstratickets.com. If available, tickets will also be sold at the door starting 90 minutes prior to show time.
