THE CULINARY ARCHITECT
Beat the heat, cook with a blender When it is so hot out, I think of using recipes that do not make my kitchen any hotter than it already is by using a little ingenuity, a blender and a few supermarket store convenience items, you may easily create a menu that works for a weeknight meal or is even special enough to entertain your guests. The following recipes may be made as a meal or added to your repertoire and mixed and matched. I especially love serving the serve the Blender Roasted Red Pepper Dip as it is so easy to prepare and delicious with all kinds of great crudites that are available at farm stands this time of year. The soup is a family favorite in my house. I usually garnish it with a “squiggle” of cooling creme fraiche for a super easy dramatic presentation. The salad is also a family favorite as the deli department of your supermarket does most of the work.
If you do not eat red meat, substitute sliced turkey breast or the meat of a rotisserie chicken. The Quick Homemade Ice Cream is a great base for your imagination. Add in Reeses peanut butter cups, M & M’s or even plump raisins. Be creative… Try these recipes and give your blender a whirl; your air conditioner will not have to work overtime, but your taste buds will! Menu (Serves 4) Blender Roasted Red Pepper Dip Blender Cucumber Avocado Soup Roast Beef Salad Quick Homemade Ice Cream Blender Roasted Red Pepper Dip 12 oz. roasted red peppers in a jar, plus 1 tblsp. liquid from the jar 1 garlic clove 1 tblsp. balsamic vinegar 4 oz. goat cheese 1 tsp. paprika Vegetables and/or Pita Chips

2 literary series to kick off this September How can we best understand the experience of illness and suffering in contemporary society? What are the perspectives and experiences of physicians and other healthcare professionals? What are the social, economic, moral, and existential problems experienced by today’s patients and their healthcare professionals? These and several related issues will be examined in a series of seminars, Healing, Compassion & Health Care, that the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association will host on Thursday, Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Monday, Sept. 10 and 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The objective of the series is to discuss and demonstrate the use of literature as a method to provide insight into contemporary healthcare issues with relation to self, the medical community and the business community, as well as a means of enhancing empathy, imaginative identification, and the moral imagination. The seminars will investigate today’s healthcare system through the eyes of healthcare professionals and their patients, and describe how the arts and humanities provide insight into contemporary culture and healthcare institutions. The major texts that will be featured in the series include “No Apparent Distress,” a medical education memoir by Rachel Pearson; “Next to Normal,” a contemporary musical play about mental illness by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt; and “Regeneration,” a historical novel about shell-shock (PTSD) in World War I and the politics of illness during war by Pat Barker, as well as several selected poems and short stories. The Healing, Compassion & Health
Care series is free and open to the public, but registration is required by sending an email to events@waltwhitman.org. WWBA will also present the eighth season of its signature series, Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. The event begins with a community mic that is free with admission. After a musical prelude, the main event begins at 8 p.m., with featured poet Scott Hightower. This portion of the event is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Hightower is the author of “Self-evident,” “Part of the Bargain,” winner of the Hayden Carruth Award for New and Emerging Poets, “Natural Trouble” and “Tin Can Tourist.” He has also published a bilingual collection of poems in Spanish, translated by Natalia Carbajosa. Hightower’s own translations of poems by the Spanish-Puerto Rican poet Aurora de Albornoz have garnered him a Willis Barnstone Translation Prize. Hightower has taught at Gay Men’s Health Crisis and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University. He currently serves as adjunct faculty at NYU and Drew University. A former poet-in-residence at Fordham University, Hightower currently lives in New York City. Tickets will be available at the door or for purchase online at www.waltwhitman. org. You can also call 631-427-5240 x112 to reserve tickets. Refreshments will be served. The event is accessible to those with physical disabilities. The Walt Whitman Historic Birthplace is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station.

Sobule to perform at My Father’s Place Jill Sobule will bring new music and reminiscences of her past to My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. On her new album and recording, Nostalgia Kills, she turns her warm wit and poet’s eye on herself more than ever before, revisiting moments from throughout her life that made her into the person she is today. It’s an especially poignant look back at childhood, “exorcising some junior high school demons,â€? as she puts it. The album will be released just prior to the scheduled concert. Also appearing will be local singer/songwriter Christine Sweeney. Looking back is a new experience for Sobule. Ever since she ďŹ rst caught mainstream attention with her 1995 song, “I Kissed a Girlâ€? — the ďŹ rst song about same-sex romance ever to crack
the Billboard Top 20 (and no relation to the later Katy Perry tune) — she’s always pushed forward, exploring new sounds and subject matter with each passing album and refusing to be pigeonholed by her early hits, which also include the ‘90s alt-rock anthem “Supermodelâ€? featured in an iconic scene in the ďŹ lm “Clueless.â€? Along the way, Sobule has shared stages with the likes of Billy Bragg, Cyndi Lauper and Warren Zevon, written music for TV and theater, and been a pioneer in the art of crowdfunding, raising so much money for her 2009 album California Years that a then-unknown startup called Kickstarter came to her for advice. Sobule has also been active in numerous social and political causes, performing at prisons as part of Wayne Kramer’s Jail Guitar Doors project,
playing dates with Lady Parts Justice’s “Vagical Mystery Tour, and curating “Monster Protest Jams Vol. 1, featuring protest songs by Tom Morello, Billy
Bragg, Boots Riley, Amanda Palmer, Jackson Browne and many other great artists. This also includes Sobule’s own “When They Say We Want Our America Back, What the F#@k Do They Mean?â€?, which traces the history of anti-immigrant sentiment in America. Tickets for Jill Sobule are $20 in advance and are available at www.myfathersplace.com. Tickets are subject to a $6 service fee. For further information, call (516) 413-3535. My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel is a supper club. In the addition to the price of the ticket there is a $25 minimum charge for food and/or beverages. Date, time and show are subject to change without notice. Doors open two hours prior to the showtime and seating is on a ďŹ rst come, ďŹ rst serve basis. All ticket holders will be seated at tables.
