Matthew Winthrop, in center, will be playing with his band Terrapin at the Great Neck House on Sunday.

The Dead bring G.N. alum home BY JA N E LL E C L AUS E N The last time Matthew Winthrop recalled playing in Great Neck was when he was a teenager with hair down to his shoulders, playing behind Great Neck North High School. “I haven’t played out in Great Neck since 1980,” Winthrop, who graduated from Great Neck North in 1981, said in an interview. But now, 38 years later, Winthrop is returning to Great Neck to perform at the Great Neck House on Sunday with Terrapin, a Connecticut-based Grateful Dead tribute band founded in 2013. The core three members of the group are lead guitar player Geoff Schneider, Paul Dunay

on rhythm guitar and vocals, and Winthrop, the band’s keyboard player. Other members include JP Geoghegan on drums, Ric LuBell on bass guitar, and vocalist “Ams” Palmieri. “It’s a kind of music that lends itself to study and dedication – pun intended,” Winthrop said of the Grateful Dead. “When we were thinking about the music to form this band around, it made sense.” Since the group’s founding five years ago, Terrapin has played over 160 concerts in venues of hundreds of people. And while they “never play the same show ever,” in the spirit of the Grateful Dead, Winthrop said people could always expect an energetic performance. “We put our own spin,” Winthrop said. “We are

an a eclectic, outgoing, aggressive group of guys. We p aggressive and we want people to get up and play dance.” d Winthrop said his own musical days began in Great Neck. G He said he recalled playing a recital with his recorder at the North Shore Musical Center on the r corner of Clover Drive and Middle Neck Road, for c example, frequenting the Great Neck House and e going to Nassau Coliseum to see Grateful Dead cong certs with his friends. c Winthrop has been playing piano for around four fo decades, according to his online biography, playing classic and jazz piano by 9 years old. He p also a formed his first band in junior high school: The Bridge. B But for many years Winthrop, a financial adviser for Aegis Capital, wasn’t involved in playing v live li music. He started again in 2010, playing for the Ship of Fools, before founding Terrapin with Schneider and Dunay in 2013, according to his online biography. “From the first second, it was like playing with a long-lost family member. It just worked,” Winthrop said. Ultimately, Winthrop said he hopes to see many familiar faces in the audience and return again to play at Steppingstone Park. “It’s a treat,” Winthrop said. “It should be awesome.” The concert will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Great Neck House on 14 Arrandale Ave. Admission to the Great Neck House requires a park card.

A retrospective of Lois Walker’s art The Art League of Long Island will present an exhibition of assemblages and paintings from the 1970s to the present by prolific painter, sculptor, poet, and teacher, Lois Walker. The exhibition opens in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on Saturday, April 14 and runs through April 29. The artists’ reception will take place on Sun-

day, April 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. Originally from the Midwest, Walker began her artistic journey as a poet after graduating from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in humanities and a B.S. in elementary education, eventually broadening her artistic horizons to include sculpture and painting. She came to Long Is-

land in the mid-1950s and began teaching in the Hicksville School District. As a writer, she was first published in the late 1940s. She took up assemblage using found objects in the late ’70s, and began to paint in the early 1990s encouraged by her mentors, Paul Wood and Stan Brodsky.

After retiring from teaching in 1986, Walker devoted all of her time to her art and writing. She had been a mainstay of the Long Island Poetry Collective and an editor of its poetry magazine, Xanadu, and continued all her activities on behalf of the LIPC until the first years of the new century. As an award-winning visual artist, Walker has shown her sculpture and abstract paintings in galleries throughout Long Island, in New York City, and across the United States, as well as in Spain and Denmark. “I have been writing poetry for years, but the sculpture began for me in late ‘70s, painting in early ‘90s. My interests are many — both aesthetic and cultural. Discovery is my inspiration and love of my materials is my actual starting point, said Walker. The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is open free of charge on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills. 7th annual guitar Celebrating Israel’s show, expo on L.I. 70 years with concert The 2018 New York Guitar Show & Exposition kicks off at the Freeport Recreation Center, 130 East Merrick Road in Freeport, on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22. The 7th annual event will feature preeminent recording artist Arlen Roth, the guitar legend who has recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan, John Entwistle, James Taylor and more. As this year’s headliner for the show, Roth will appear and perform on Saturday, April 21 from 12 to 4 p.m. Expo founder Rich Johnson said the following about Roth’s participation in this year’s event: “I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to have Mr. Roth, a true legend on the Fender telecaster, as our headliner this time around. Roth is an international superstar who basically started video guitar lessons back in the ’80s

and we believe got it to where it is today on outlets such as YouTube. I don’t have the space here to list all his accomplishments.” Many know Roth as the master behind the movie “Crossroads,” writing, performing and coaching all of film star Ralph Macchio’s guitar parts in the 1986 movie and directing many of the scenes while serving as the film’s official authenticator of the musical scenes.

Of his upcoming appearance, Roth says, “Some of my happiest times were when my family and I would come to the NY (Guitar) Expo… great music, great friends, endless guitars and comradery! Can’t wait to appear there this year and do it all over again! It’s a true honor to do this, and I hope the fans and players come out… look forward to meeting you all!” “The New York Guitar Expo grows leaps and bounds every year,” added Johnson. “It’s now an East Coast fan favorite with this well-rounded guitar show highlighting vintage gear and guitars, retailers, manufacturers, private collections, etc., all so anyone walking through the front door can participate in some way large or small.” For more information on the Guitar Show, visit www.nyguitarexpo.com.

Temple Israel of Great Neck will celebrate Israel Independence Day, or Yom Ha’atzmaut, on Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., with a concert, free and open to the public. The holiday this year marks the 70th anniversary of the reading of the Declaration of Independence of Israel by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in 1948. The evening will be filled with music, song and celebration featuring outstanding soloists and three local choral groups. Among the choirs performing is the Voices of Virtue, a gospel youth choir under the direction of Rachel Blackburn. The group made its international debut when it performed in Vienna, and they were subsequently invited to compete in the International Choral Competition in Verona, Italy. Joining Temple Israel Cantor Raphael Frieder in an uplifting repertoire of songs will be Cantor Eliza-

beth Shammash, of Temple Tiferet Bet Israel in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Cantor Shammash, who studied with Cantor Frieder, has served as the cantor at her congregation since 2007, after holding positions at several other congregations in the Northeast. She is also a celebrated opera singer and has performed with such prestigious orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic; the Israel Philharmonic; the China National Symphony; Mostly Mozart, and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields among others. Ronn

Yedidia, a renowned pianist and composer, will be the evening’s musical director and accompanist. The newly formed Shireinu Choir of Long Island, a mixed adult choir that celebrates Jewish culture and heritage through music and song, will also participate with a combination of English and Hebrew songs. The choir is under the direction of Deborah Tartell. Recently, the Shireinu Choir of Long Island performed alongside Voices of Virtue at the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Service held in Kings Point. Opening the concert will be the sweet singing of the Temple Israel Children Choir, who will set a celebratory mood with some favorite Israeli songs. Temple Israel is located at 108 Old Mill Road. An affecting human drama of love, loss, and resilience unfolds against the backdrop of World War I. The women of the Paridier farm, under the deft hand of the family’s matriarch, must grapple with the workload while the men are off at the front. They reluctantly bring on an outsider, a hard-scrabble teenage orphan, to help. New tools allow the women to triumph over the land, new found independence is acquired, yet emotions are stirred especially when the men return from the front on short leaves. Director Xavier Beauvois revels in the mysteries and beauties of the French countryside, here unravaged by war, with painterly images bathed in natural light, yet keeps his focus on the intricate drama that plays out against the upheaval of the Great War.

LIU Post group seeks to play Down Under BY K A R I S F U LL E R The LIU Post Wind Symphony will take a trip Down Under to perform alongside ensembles from across the globe from June 29 to July 10. The wind symphony is led by Dr. James McRoy, music professor and director of wind studies at LIU Post, and is composed of 66 musicians. Graduate and undergraduate students, alumni and high schoolers will perform together under the name Long Island Symphonic Winds for the first time. “It’s a unique title, made up of different populations,” McRoy said. The LI Symphonic Winds will be one of only two American groups to perform. “The list of ensembles performing is a real variety,” McRoy said. There will be ensembles representing countries as far as China, Australia and Japan. KaraAnn Leone, LIU Post music department graduate assistant and flutist, is excited for the adventure in Australia. This is Leone’s second year in the music performance graduate

degree program. Her first tour with the wind symphony was to Puerto Rico during summer of 2015, as she simultaneously worked to complete her undergraduate degree in music education. “[It was] a lot of just ‘go with the flow,’ and adjust when we got there, so we kind of knew what to expect,” Leone said, “But it was really successful and we all had a great time.” Each summer, McRoy chaperones a new ensemble of students abroad to perform at some of the world’s most acclaimed stages. During the wind symphony’s 2018 trip to Sydney, Australia, they will perform at the Sydney Opera House and other venues such as the Darling Harbour. Leone is humbled by the opportunity to travel and play on a prestigious stage. “I’ve always wanted to go to Australia, and I didn’t think I’d ever be able to,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to just being there. Performing at the Sydney Opera House there is like performing at Carnegie Hall here, and it’s a dream come true.” The wind symphony went on

Dr McRoy, Director of wind studies and professor of music. its first tour in 2009 and has since performed in Poland, the Czech Republic and China. Bobby and Sam Stainkamp have attended all three of the wind symphony’s previous tours. The LIU Post alumni both graduated with undergraduates degrees in music education in2010, and graduate degrees in music theory and composition in 2012 and now reside on Long

Island. Mr. and Mrs. Stainkamp have fond memories of their past tours and are excited about the upcoming one. “We get to experience a lot of nice places’ performers,” Mrs. Stainkamp said. “Laced into that, besides a couple of performances, we get to experience another culture and learn about life there.” Over the span of 12 days, the group will tour Sydney, and they will perform three concerts. The first will take place at the renowned Sydney Opera House. The next will be at the Darling Harbour, an outdoor venue known for its concerts and festivals. The ensemble’s final performance will take place at the Sydney Town Hall theatre, a venue McRoy describes as a “high-end concert hall.” “When we went to Poland, every single concert that we put on was sold out; there was not an empty seat,” Mr. Stainkamp said, “They had people sitting on the floor in the front.” Two of the 2018 concerts are shared with other ensembles, and the LI Symphonic Winds will occupy the stage for 30 to 40 minutes.

Along with performing on their trip, the ensemble will partake in two workshops led by Australian conductor and composer David Stanhope. Working with a living composer from the area artists are performing in gives the musicians an experience of a different culture, according to Leone. “You feel more attached to it and really understand where they are coming from once we are able to actually see things for our self,” she said. Rehearsals for an event of this scale start early, so the students and alumni participating will begin meeting at the beginning of May. Before the ensemble leaves for Australia, they will perform a send-off concert on Wednesday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. Although the venue is not yet set, the event will be free and open to the public.
