H

untington’s b.j. spoke gallery is hosting a pair of exhibits featuring both local artists and works by the Pioneer of Neo-Pop art, Steve Kaufman. “Spring has Sprung,” which runs through April 28, will feature limited edition works by Kaufman, whose entry into the world of serious pop art began in his teens when he became an assistant to Andy Warhol at The Factory studio. Nicknamed “SAK” by Warhol, Kaufman eventually executed such pieces as a 144-foot long canvas which later toured the country. Kaufman was born in 1960 surrounded by an extended family filled with painters and sculptors. When he was 8 years old, he held his first one-man art show at a Bronx bank, sponsored by a synagogue, showing work that was later donated to the Jewish Holocaust Memorial in Brooklyn. At 14, Kaufman participated with nine other New York City students in a cultural art exchange in Japan, resulting in his scholarship to the Parsons School of Design. By 16, Kaufman was frequenting Studio 54 and befriending major New York City artists from the 1970s, including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Warhol. Among Kaufman’s more recognizable works were his portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Al Pacino, former President Barack Obama, Jay Leno and John Gotti. Like Warhol, he was also known for his work featuring Americana icons such as a $100 bill, Coca-Cola and Campbell’s

soup cans. After suffering a stroke in 2004, Kaufman later died in Vail, Colorado in 2010 while preparing for a show. Just back from a successful European tour, Dana Blum and Diana Vachier will talk about Kaufman’s work and his impact on the art scene of the 1980s and beyond. The public is invited to a free reception at the gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be provided.

Although Kaufman died in 2010, his creations have taken on a life of their own in the art market. In another room of the gallery, a members’ show “Spring Fever” will also be on display throughout April. Popular artists include Katherine Criss of New Hyde Park, Gia Schifano of New Hyde Park, Kevin Larkin of Roslyn, Karen L. Kirshner, Richard Anello, John A. Bell, Phyllis Baron, Lorraine Carol, Cindy Schecter, Liz Ehrlichman, Christine Greene, Barbara Grey, Barbara V. Jones, Joanne Leftsky, Nicolette Pach, Constance Wain, Bert Winsberg, Diane Marxe and Lili Maglione.

A GOLDEN Opportunity Is Knocking!

Bestselling author Davis to talk at JCC Fiona Davis, the nationally bestselling author of “The Dollhouse and “The Address, will make an appearance on Long Island to discuss and sign copies of her New York-based novels. The event will take place at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center on Tuesday, April 10 at 10:30 a.m. In her debut novel, “The Dollhouse, Davis tells a story about New York City’s Barbizon Hotel for Women that housed aspiring models, secretaries, and editors during the 1950s, a place that intrigues a modern-day journalist who sets out to uncover a dark secret buried deep within Barbizon’s glamorous past. “The Dollhouse received much praise from critics, including People magazine, which said the novel is “rich in both twists and period detail and “impossible to put down. The New York Post called the book “an ode to old New York that will have you yelling for more seasons of ‘Mad Men.' In her follow-up novel, “The Address, published last year, Davis tells a story of two women living 100 years apart, but whose destinies are tied to another famous Manhattan residence, The Dakota. This title went on to become an Indie National Bestseller, an August LibraryReads

pick, and an August Indie Next Pick. This summer will see the release of Davis’ new novel, “The Masterpieceâ€? (Aug. 7), in which she takes readers inside New York City’s crown jewel, Grand Central Terminal. This story involves a perhaps little-known piece of history involving this constellation-adorned landmark, the Grand Central School of Art, in dual narratives set in the disparate worlds of 1928 and 1974 Manhattan. “The Masterpieceâ€? has already received advance praise from fellow bestselling novelists Caroline Leavitt and Pam Jeno, among others. A former actress, who worked on and o-Broadway, Davis received a master’s degree at Columbia Journalism School, where she fell in love with writing, going from editor to freelance journalist before ďŹ nally settling down as an author of historical ďŹ ction. She’s a graduate of the College of William & Mary and is based in New York City. Sid Jacobson JCC is located at 300 Forest Drive in Greenvale. Tickets to the event are $35 for JCC members, $45 for non-members. For more information about the event, go to www.sjjcc.org, and to learn more about the author visit www. ďŹ onadavis.net.

Author to speak at Holocaust memorial

My Candle Burns at Both Ends Edna St. Vincent Millay Voice of the Jazz Age

Chris Nicola will be the guest in the pulpit at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck’s Holocaust Memorial Service on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., offering the talk, “No Place On Earth,” which is the title of his film that documents how a group of Jews survived the Holocaust living in a cave for more than a year. Chris Nicola was born in England in 1951. He and his family immigrated to the U.S., settling ultimately in New

Actress and television host Shirley Romaine presents her new program exploring the life of the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. A rebellious icon of her time, Millay’s lovers were male and female, married and single; her blazing wit and sexual daring attracted audiences to sold-out readings. But there was a dark side. Using Millay’s sonnets, Romaine’s original narrative will introduce a cast of characters whose lives intersected with one of America’s most popular poets. A seemingly minor traffic collision has far-reaching consequences in this story of a well-meaning medical examiner haunted by the death of a child he might have prevented. As the story unfolds, his fate becomes inextricably bound up with that of the grieving family. Premiering to acclaim at the Venice Film Festival, No Date No Signature is an intelligent, compelling portrait of guilt and grief anchored by brilliantly understated performances.

York City. In the mid 1970s Nicola began his life as an explorer by scuba diving in caves. He first heard, as a rumor in Ukraine 20 years ago, the above-mentioned story of Jewish survival. To date, he has confirmed this extraordinary story by locating 14 of the original 38 cave dwellers. He co-authored the book, “Secret of Priest’s Grotto,” which led to the making of “No Place On Earth,” a documentary about their experiences. Nicola runs the Priest’s Grotto Heritage Project, a genocide awareness project in which the grandchildren of those who lived in Priest’s Grotto Cave during the Holocaust work hand-in-hand with the grandchildren of those who lived above the cave in building an exhibit to honor what those courageous 38 did so long ago. They are motivated by the hope that by keeping this story alive for future generations, they will help to prevent such genocides as the Holocaust from ever happening again. The Emanuel Holocaust Memorial Service is conducted by Rabbi Robert S. Widom and Cantor Jonathan Guss, accompanied by violin, flute, bass and organ. Admission is free. Temple Emanuel of Great Neck is located at 150 Hicks Lane, Great Neck, NY 11024. For further information, please call 516.482.5701.

Adelphi students to do ‘Crime of the Heart’ The students at Adelphi University’s Department of Theatre will perform the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Crimes of the Heart,” on Tuesday, April 10 through Sunday, April 15. Also a recipient of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the drama was initially presented by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, then Off-Broadway, and then on Broadway, where it established author Beth Henley as a major voice in theatre. The story was later adapted for the big screen in a 1986 film starring Diane Ke-

aton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital prospects. Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast. And Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. The sisters’ troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end, the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future that the New York Times said “overflows with infectious high spirits.” For tickets and a list of showtimes, go to www.pac.adelphi.edu. The Adelphi Performing Arts Center is located at 1 South Ave. in Garden City.

Popular folk trio to Hofstra, Gold Coast hit Landmark stage workshops for teens Americana powerhouse trio Red Molly is known for their gorgeous harmonies, infectious songwriting, and captivating stage presence. Laurie MacAllister (bass), Abbie Gardner (Dobro), and Molly Venter (guitar) weave together the threads of American music — from folk roots to bluegrass, and from heartbreaking ballads to barnburning honky tonk — as effortlessly as they blend their voices into “serious harmonizing chops and slick pop savvy,” said Time Out New York. If one word describes Red Molly’s music, that word is joyous. Their a cappella tunes are love letters to the art of

the vocal blend, and their innovative instrumentation is simply a joy to listen to. One of the most moving things about Red Molly’s music is the honest sense that you’re watching three dear friends sharing songs in their living room. That synergy and harmony carries through on their newest studio effort, aptly titled The Red Album. Red Molly will perform for their diehard fans, known as Redheads, along with special guest Ellis Paul, at Landmark on Main Street’s Jeanne Rimsky Theatre on Sunday, April 8 at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, go to www.landmarkonmain.com. Teen filmmakers from across the region attended the inaugural Youth Film Day, produced by Hofstra University and the Gold Coast International Film Festival, where they explored careers in film and television. Students in grades 7-12 had the opportunity to take hands-on filmmaking classes and workshops with Hofstra faculty, Gold Coast International Film Festival staff, and award-winning filmmakers. The event was held March 3 in the world-class film and television production studios of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication on the Hofstra campus. Over 100 student filmmakers participated in workshops taught by experts in cinematography, editing, sound design, visual effects/CGI, drone filmmaking, stunts and fight choreography, and critical film analysis. Students also attended a panel, “How to Make a Short Film,” led by award-winning filmmakers David Paterson (Disney’s Bridge to Terabithia; Lionsgate’s The Great Gilly Hopkins); Ramfis Myrthil, Daniel Sorochkin, and Oscar winner Mara Kassin. All students attending Youth Film Day were invited to submit short films to be judged by a jury comprised of industry professionals. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined all the attendees for a special screening of the entries nominated for best film. Long Islanders Tori Kaller from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, Jaiden Moreno from Lynbrook South Middle School in East Rockaway and Miles Serpico of Mattlin Middle School in Plainview each took home an award for Best Film – Honorable Mention. First Place – Best Film was awarded to Keegan Tindall from Northern Burlington Regional High School and Second Place – Best Film went to Austin Segal from Ridge High School. Caroline Sorokoff, director of the Gold Coast International Film Festival, was proud to partner with Hofstra on this special event. “Our goal with Youth Film Day and all

we do to support young filmmakers is to give students a clearer picture of the industry, and for those who decide to pursue careers in film or television, some practical skills and experience,” Sorokoff said. “There is no better place for students to gain such experience than from the worldclass faculty at The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication and the awardwinning filmmakers that work with our festival.” “It was great to see the students really enjoy the workshops. Like most people, they were fascinated with learning more about directing, but I don’t think many were aware of all the crafts and creative functions associated with making a film,” added Professor William Jennings, of Hofstra’s Department of Radio, Television, Film, who helped organize the event. “Hofstra also got to show off our amazing instructors and facilities and in doing so, raise the profile of our film and media programs.” Youth Film Day is a part of Hofstra’s Regional Scholars program, which offers talented middle school and high school students the opportunity to explore new academic interests with scholars and college students as mentors, to spend a day or two on a college campus, and to gain an understanding of what collegiate-level work entails. The initiative also supports Hofstra’s mission to encourage and nurture intellectual curiosity and learning through a free and open exchange of ideas. The Youth Film Day program is also an extension of the Gold Coast International Film Festival’s Young Filmmakers Program, which solicits short films from students in grades K-12 from all around the country to compete for a spot in its annual November festival. Submissions are currently being accepted for the 2018 Young Filmmakers Program. Hofstra University is the official University Partner of Gold Coast International Film Festival and the Gold Coast Arts Center’s year-round film programs.
