Roaring ’20s return to L.I. thru Jazz Age exhibit PHOTO BY AMELIA CAMURATI

The Nassau County Museum of Art’s “Anything Goes: The Jazz Age” exhibit, which runs through July 8, features a row of portraits by Man Ray.

BY A M E L I A C A M U R AT I The Nassau County Museum of Art opened its latest exhibit Saturday, bringing the art, music, literature and feel of the 1920s to the Gold Coast. The “Anything Goes: Jazz Age” exhibit, which opened Saturday and will run through July 8, fills the Arnold and Joan Saltzman Fine Arts Building with art in every form, from live music being piped through an antique gramophone in the museum shop to the Francis Cugat painting that inspired the famous blue “The Great Gatsby” cover and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award trophy given to the best college hockey player annually. “The show you have here is absolutely everything I’ve got in my heart and in my head,” Director Charles Riley said during the gallery

reception Friday. “Everything I know about the jazz age is laid out in these rooms.” When Riley, author of “Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism,” was hired during the summer, he said he would work to bring a jazz age show to the museum. The exhibition tracks the progress of modernism in art from cubism to neoclassicism. Composers such as George Gershwin and Cole Porter were taking syncopation and the blues to new heights at this time, and their records, sheet music, and piano rolls are on view and will be heard throughout the show on ’20’s-era turntables and player pianos. As a Princeton University alumnus, Riley was exuberant discussing the trophy depicting the former Princeton hockey player who died during World War I while serving as a fight-

er pilot. Cugat’s painting “Celestial Eyes” that dons most “The Great Gatsby” book jackets is also on loan to the museum on its first trip ever away from Princeton University. The giants among the artists were Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Gaston Lachaise, Man Ray, Stuart Davis, Florine Stettheimer and Tamara de Lempicka, all of whom are represented in the show with major works, including a little-known Picasso drawing of the famous Jazz Age muse Sara Murphy on the beach at Antibes, as well as a spectacular Léger still life. Art for the show was also curated from Heckscher Museum, Parrish Museum, Cradle of Aviation Museum and New York University Grey Art Gallery.

The Oratorio Society of Queens performs Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, selections from “West Side Story,” “Make Our Garden Grow” the finale from Bernstein’s Candide, as well as Americana favorites on Sunday, May, 20 at 4:00 pm in the Queensborough Performing Arts Center in Bayside. OSQ will perform with its 125-plus member chorus under the direction of Maestro David Close featuring soloists and guest artist Jerry Korobow with OSQ’s orchestra, the Orchestral Arts Ensemble of Queens. This year 2018, marks the 100th birthday of American composer, conductor and pianist, Leonard Bernstein, one of the most gifted and brilliant musicians ever to have graced the American musical scene. The Chichester Psalms was commissioned by the Southern Cathedrals Festival at Chichester Cathedral and composed in 1965, is a setting of psalms celebrating joy, offering reassurance in a troubled world and underlining the beautiful theme of humanity living together in unity. The work’s rhythmic verve and melodic beauty are Bernstein at his best… truly music for our time! The West Side Story Choral Suite offers a sampling of Bernstein’s most beloved music from his enduringly popular musical of 1957 including “Tonight,” “Maria,” and “Somewhere.” The musical, based on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” updates the star-crossed lovers’ lives to the realities of Manhattan’s west side during the 1950s. Voltaire, an 18th century French philosopher who wrote the book on which Bernstein’s opera, Candide, is based, asks us to “Make our garden

grow.” Growing our garden is a metaphor for the flowering of mankind itself, and we celebrate just that with this glorious song. Selections from the best of the American Choral Experience are featured with beloved African-American Spirituals including “Ride the Chariot” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” The African-American experience of slavery is reflected in the texts of the spirituals offering the hope of deliverance from bondage through the use of religious symbols. Heaven becomes a metaphor for release from slavery and ‘riding the chariot in the morning’ might mean escape at dawn. Jerry Korobow, singer, composer and guitarist, is featured playing his original compositions including his very popular “Grandma Song.” An engaging and humorous raconteur, he will give you entertaining insights into how life’s experiences impact a composer’s work and result in the creation of a new song! Queensborough Performing Arts Center is located in Queensborough Community College at 222-05 56th Ave. in Bayside. Parking is free on the main lot next to the theater, which offers easy-access entry. Pre-Concert Tickets are $35; $30 for seniors (62+) and students with ID; $10 for children (12 and under) accompanied by an adult. Tickets on the day of the concert will be $40 at the box office; $10 for children (12 and under) accompanied by an adult. For additional information, please call the Oratorio Society of Queens at 718.279.3006 or visit www. QueensOratorio.org

Jean decides to answer the phone and the journey that follows changes her entire life. “Technology outlives us, all that is left are memories, and this cell phone that seems to be alive after he is gone,” Michaela Fox, an LIU Post sophomore musical theater major and Mrs. Gottlieb, said. “It’s a satire on technology and our absorption with it,” she said. The play, “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” written by Sarah Ruhl, is directed by LIU Post MFA student Chamila Priyanka. The small cast of six LIU Post sophomore and junior musical theatre majors each play a large role in portraying a dark and comedic perspective on contemporary issues. “I like the structure of the play. It’s not a realistic play, it’s kind of absurd,” Priyanka said. “It is a powerful artistic statement of the current society.”

(Photo-by-Ashley-Bowden) Priyanka has directed four one-act plays at Post and a four-act play in his home country of Sri Lanka. “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” is his first time directing a full-length show. Priyanka praises his cast for having many talents. “They have good training here. So it is very easy to work with them,” he said. The cast all helped with creating

multiple elements of the performance, and they were heavily involved with contributing ideas, according to Fox. “It was just a bunch of creative minds working together,” she said. “The collaboration is an essential part of this business,” Priyanka said. “My cast helped me so much when I rehearsed those

scenes. Everyone gave me their ideas. It is amazing.” “[Chamila] is really fun. It’s fun to watch him grow and develop as he learns things from us and we learn things from him,” Fox said about working with Priyanka. “He’s one of the better directors I’ve worked with here [at Post],” she said. Priyanka hopes that the theme of the play reaches his audience. “This play is a kind of statement of current society. We are moving from the tangible world to the intangible world because of digital technology,” he said. “Our souls and bodies don’t want to be together anymore.” Performances take place on the Little Theatre mainstage at the LIU Post campus in Brookville on Saturday, March 24, Wednesday, March 28, and Saturday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students. They can be purchased at the Little Theatre box office or at www.tix55.com/ptc700/. Book Club evening with Carribean twist Again, it was my turn to host The Book Club. The book we read was “Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman. This engaging “faction” book is set in St. Thomas in the 1800s and chronicles the life of Camille Pissaro’s mother and Camille Pissaro. I immediately started to research what hors d’oeuvres were served in the Carribean. After much reading, I came up with the following menu. All recipes are very easy to prepare and delicious. They may easily be prepared ahead of time allowing the host to be a guest. The following hors d’oeuvres may also be worked into your Spring Entertaining repertoire. Start the evening with a welcome drink of Rum Punch to set the mood. Set out the hors d’oeuvres on a Carribean pareo, instead of a tablecloth. Then let guests help themselves while discussing the book. I am sure your guests will enjoy these tasty tidbits as much as mine did, as not a morsel was left at the end of the evening! Boxcar Lillies, Low Tickets for Holocaust Lily to perform on L.I. Museum benefit April showers usually bring May flowers, but the “Lilies” are coming to Long Island a month early. Touring artists The Boxcar Lilies and Low Lily share an April 7 bill as part of the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s First Saturday Concerts series. The 8:30 p.m. concert at the Congregational Church of Huntington (30 Washington Drive, off Route 25A in Centerport) will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. An Americana duo from Massachusetts,The Boxcar Lilies have been wowing audiences since forming in 2009. Combining innovative vocal harmonies and exceptional songwriting, the two musical artists have made a name for themselves with their signature mix of folk, country, blues, and bluegrass-tinged Americana music. Jenny Goodspeed (electric bass, guitar, vocals) and Stephanie Marshall (washboard, guitar, vocals) deftly weave their voices into a sound that is sometimes delicate and other times gritty, but always soul stirring. Their trademark music have put The Boxcar Lilies on the Americana music map, but their genuine and charming stage presence and offthe-cuff banter have helped keep them there.

Low Lily, a New England-based string and vocal trio, explores the roots and branches of American folk music with traditional influences and modern inspiration. Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) are masterful players with deep relationships to traditional music styles ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, New England, and old-time Appalachian sounds. When you combine this with their inventive composition skills and arrangements, you get music that is rooted yet contemporary. As PopMatters notes, Low Lily has “an incredible knack for putting a little pop twist on a traditional folk/Americana sound.” In March, Low Lily released 10,000 Days Like These, its first full-length CD. The trio’s previous, self-entitled EP was released in 2015. This will be Low Lily’s first Long Island concert appearance. Tickets to the concert are priced at $25 ($20 for FMSH members), and may be purchased in advance online at www.fmsh. org. For more information, visit the website or call 631- 425-2925.

Experience a taste of Long Island’s best restaurants at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County’s annual benefit: “Taste of Long Island.” This year’s benefit features a tasting event and silent auction on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at Westbury Manor, 1100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. In addition, three middle and high-school students will be presented with the Friedlander Upstander Award. The Tolerance Benefit is a way for donors, volunteers, Holocaust Survivors and members of the community to join together to raise money in support of HMTC’s Holocaust, anti-bias and anti-bullying education programs. Those donations make it possible to provide transportation for school groups to visit HMTC’s world-class museum and to hear first-hand testimony from a Holocaust survivor and for nurses and law enforcement officers to participate in free training workshops. The Friedlander Upstander Award,

presented by HMTC and the Claire Friedlander Family Foundation, in conjunction with the Nassau and Suffolk County Police Departments, is awarded to Nassau and Suffolk County middle school and high school students who have acted as Upstanders against bullying or intolerance in any of its forms. Recipients receive a $2,500 scholarship. The Tolerance Benefit is sponsored by Sterling Risk Insurance, the Ike, Molly & Steven Elias Foundation, the Maidenbaum Property Tax Group, Title Associates, The Claire Friedlander Family Foundation, and Samar Hospitality. Other Sponsorship opportunities are available. Tickets are $130 a person and a ten-pack of tickets is available for $1,250.
