Tilles Center expands shows to ‘cast wider net’ BY A M E L I A C A M U R AT I

T

illes Center Executive Director William Biddle was hired two years ago to expand the programming at the LIU Post performing arts cen-

ter.

“Our role as a community performing arts center really is to find and meet people where they’re at and move them along,” Biddle said. “They may come to us through the Chinese acrobats, but maybe they’ll try a Broadway show. Trying to find things that are relevant to our audiences and we realize that for us to be successful, you have to cast a much wider net.” Originally from New Jersey, Biddle said he has spent most of his career running community-based, university-owned arts centers with a focus on programming for the external community as well as the student population. Biddle said in the last three to five years, audiences have changed and programming needed to change with them. “Tilles historically has been known for the best in what a lot of folks consider world-class performances — the best orchestras, the best dance companies,” Biddle said. “My programming philosophy really boils down to always presenting world-class performances, but understanding that world-class has different meanings for different people. For some people, it’s Michael McDonald. For other people, it’s the Royal Philharmonic. For other folks, it’s the New York City Ballet and for others, it’s Larry the Cable Guy.” Biddle said the Tilles Center, which used to run on the academic year calendar with summers off, added some classic rock performances last summer and has looked

at redoing the center’s plaza area for some outdoor programming as well. Biddle also said this is the first year the center has offered multiple sensoryfriendly performances for children and adults on the autism spectrum, including the upcoming Red Kite Treasure Adventures shows in March in the center’s Patrons Lounge. The shows are small, meant

for about 12 people and their caretakers. “It’s a very intimate and safe space,” Biddle said. “There’s no extreme lighting or extreme sound, and we’re working with the Chicago Children’s Theater Company on that, and we’re training our teachers through our arts education program to work on these sensory-friendly performances.

William Biddle

“I’m hoping in the next year or so, out of this training, we’ll put together our own show that we will take throughout Long Island, taking that show to the communities. That’s part of a central part of our mission, to make the arts more accessible to more people.” Biddle said last year the center offered a viewing of “The Godfather” with a live orchestra playing the score and is considering doing a similar event with the “Star Wars” saga films this year. Biddle has also focused on expanding the arts education programs through the Tilles Center, including sending master classes to more than a dozen local dance studios with companies performing at the center. The students are given opportunities to take workshops from professional dancers and choreographers before seeing the shows. Biddle said the Martha Graham Dance Company is in residency at the center through April and will work with LIU Post students as well as high schoolers, discussing the Martha Graham legacy and style before a choreographer sets a piece with the students to be shown at the company’s concert. Biddle said his focus is to increase not only the quantity of shows but the quality of the performances brought to the Greenvale campus. “If someone’s going to put out the money to attend a world-class orchestra, they’re going to see one of the best in the world,” Biddle said. “Next season alone, we haven’t officially announced this yet, but we’re bringing one of the top five orchestras in the world that will be performing here. Our orchestra series will rival some of the performances at Carnegie Hall.”

The students of the Adelphi University Department of Theatre present “Machinal,â€? a gripping drama by American journalist and playwright Sophie Treadwell. “Machinalâ€? will run from Feb. 27 through March 4 in the Olmsted Theatre in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (Adelphi PAC), 1 South Ave in Garden City. “Machinalâ€? is directed by Maggie Lally. It’s America’s Golden Age, a time of happiness, freedom and prosperity — or is it? For one young woman in the industrial, male-dominated world of the 1920s, life is nothing like she hoped it would be. Tormented and unfulďŹ lled in a passionless marriage and an unwanted motherhood, she ďŹ nally discovers joy in the form of an illicit love aair and her life is forever changed. A groundbreaking work in the landscape of American theatre, “Machinalâ€?

Salsa orchestra at Kupferberg Center The legendary salsa orchestra El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico will perform a one-night-only show at Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. Officially named “Ambassadors of Our Music” by the Puerto Rican Senate, the renowned salsa orchestra seeks to inspire audiences worldwide with their horn-punctuated Latin rhythms and vocal harmonies. Since its inception in 1962 by bandleader Rafael Ithier, El Gran Combo have collaborated with several household names, such as singers Charlie Aponte, Johnny Ventura, Celia Cruz, and Jerry Rivas, and mu-

sicians Miguel Marrero, Milton Correa, Edwin Cortes, and Martin Quinones. So many renowned artists “graduated” from El Gran Combo that the band became affectionately

known as the University of Salsa. Over the course of their musical career, the group has been met with global acclaim and numerous accolades, in-

cluding six Grammy nominations for Best Tropical Album and Best Latin Performance and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Billboard in 2002. This dynastic institution is

considered the most successful salsa orchestra in Puerto Rico and throughout the world. Their staying power can be attributed to their willingness to evolve musically, the steady presence of their founding members, and the unwavering loyalty of their fans. The band will perform on Friday, March 2 at 9 p.m. in Colden Auditorium, 15349 Reeves Ave. in Flushing. Tickets are priced from $39 to $89. Students get a 10% discount with CUNY ID. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com or call the Kupferberg Center for the Arts box office at 718-793-8080.

Pa. metal band to Trio Solisti returns to play The Paramount Adelphi on March 3 An industrial city situated in Northeastern Pennsylvania, you could say Scranton quietly prides itself on a tried-and-true, Rust Belt work ethic. So the band that hails from this city, Motionless in White, dug into the roots of their hometown’s pervasive attitude for their fourth, full-length album entitled Graveyard Shift. Comprised of Chris “Motionless” Cerulli on lead vocals, Ricky “Horror” Olson on rhythm guitar, Devin “Ghost” Sola on bass, Ryan Sitkowski on lead guitar, and Vinny Mauro on drums, the band derived their name from the song, “Motionless and White,” by fellow metalcore band Eighteen Vision. “We’re a band that came out of the

small-town, blue-collar spirit,” says Cerulli. “We put ten years into growing this and working hard to do what we love the most. We look forward to putting in another ten. Both the area we come from and the fan base brought us to this point. Graveyard Shift is all about that work ethic. It’s been instilled in us. Early on, we realized if you give the time and effort to chase a dream, it’s possible to achieve it by the sheer amount of drive and passion you have.” This passion will be on display at the band’s live performance at The Paramount on Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The Paramount is located at 370 New York Ave. in Huntington. To purchase tickets for the show, call 631-673-7300 or go to www.paramountny.com.

Trio Solisti will return to the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center with another exhilarating performance on Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m. on the Westermann Stage, Concert Hall in the Adelphi PAC, 1 South Ave. in Garden City. This concert will include Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Trio Élégiaque No. 1 in G Minor, Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1, and Brahams’ Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8. Founded in 2001, Trio Solisti — featuring violinist Maria Bachmann, cellist Alexis Pia Gerlach, and pianist Fabio Bidini — has performed at prestigious concert venues such as the Great Performers at Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, People’s Symphony Concerts at Town Hall, Washington Performing Arts Society at Kennedy Center,

Seattle’s Meany Hall and La Jolla’s Revelle Series. The ensemble has a varied discography on a number of record labels, including Naxos, Bridge Records, Endeavour Classics, and Marquis Classics. It actively champions contemporary music, collaborating with leading composers such as Philip Glass, Lowell Liebermann, Paul Moravec and Kevin Puts. Tickets are currently on sale for $35 with discounts available to seniors, students and alumni. Information is available online at pac.adelphi.edu or at the Lucia and Steven N. Fischer Box Office at 516.877.4000 or boxoffice@adelphi.edu. ‘Walking With Whitman’ series to kick off Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is proud to announce the lineup for its eighth season of its signature series, “Walking With Whitman: Poetry in Performance.” The series features six programs held on seasonal “first Fridays” and consists of a community open mic, a musical interlude, and a poetry performance. The event launches on March 2 with Scott Hightower and continues on April 6 with Terrance Hayes. John Dorsey concludes the spring season in May. The fall series begins on Oct. 5 with Tom Pickard, followed by Elaine Equi on Nov. 2, and concludes with Steve Dalachinsky on Dec. 7. Each program begins at 6 p.m. with the open mic, continues with refreshments and a musical interlude by Tom Santoriello & Friends at 7:15, and features the poet performer at 8 p.m. After the poetry reading, the poet offers a Q&A and book signing. “Walking with Whitman” is hosted by WWBA Writer in Resi-

dence George Wallace and is sponsored by Poets & Writers. Hightower, to be featured on March

2, is the author of “Self-evident” (Barrow Street Press, 2012); “Part of the Bargain” (Copper Canyon Press, 2005),

winner of the Hayden Carruth Award for New and Emerging Poets; “Natural Trouble” (2003); and “Tin Can Tourist” (2001). He has also published a bilingual collection of poems in Spanish, translated by Natalia Carbajosa. Hightower’s translations of poems by poet Aurora de Albornoz have garnered him a Willis Barnstone Translation Prize. “Tartessos,” his second bilingual collection, is forthcoming. Hightower has taught at Gay Men’s Health Crisis and currently serves as adjunct faculty at NYU ’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. He lives in New York City and sojourns in Spain. The “Walking With Whitman” events are open to the public and include discounted tickets for members and students (members $10; non-members $15). For more information about the series and to buy tickets, go to www.waltwhitman.org. The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station.

Drinking whiskey for a good cause

Whiskeys and bourbon barrel aged craft beers are on tap for the 2018 Winter Bourbon Festival taking place on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Now in its fifth year, the event will be held at T.J. Finley’s located at 42 E. Main St. in Bay Shore. Sales of whiskey rose 7.7 percent in 2016, outpacing the entire spirits industry. The growth in sales of American whiskeys — which include bourbon, rye and Tennessee whiskey — was led by millennials’ interest in the spirit, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. “What we’ve found is that people are interested in learning more about whiskey,” said Drew Dvorkin, owner of T.J. Finley’s. “People drink seasonally. Starting

in the fall, and continuing through winter, people do a good deal of exploring and experimenting with different whiskies and whiskey cocktails. They ask questions and taste-test to find their favorites.” The Winter Bourbon Festival will give the whiskey lover a large range of styles from which to choose. Attendees will be able to try some of the best-selling and most desirable whiskeys all under one roof. As a special treat, festival goers will be able to learn the art of mixing the season’s most popular cocktails — the Boulevardier and the Manhattan. Brand ambassadors from Buffalo Trace will be on site to teach, preach, and provide samples of these speciality cocktails.

“Craft beer drinkers and whiskey drinkers share a passion for flavor, variety, tradition, and an artisan spirit,” said Dvorkin. “The Winter Bourbon Festival is one of our favorite events of the year. Enthusiasts from all over Long Island, Queens, and New York City gather to enjoy an eclectic variety of whiskey and barrel aged beer. It’s great to spend a winter afternoon — sipping amazing whiskey, enjoying a hand-rolled cigar, and eating barbecue food with friends — all while supporting a worthwhile cause.” The event will help raise funds for Gavin’s Got Heart, a local 501c3 charity with a mission to educate people about congenital heart defects while offering

support to families with children affected by CHD. Back by popular demand is local cigar purveyor, Village Cigar Headquarters (locations in both Babylon and Patchogue), who will be selling hand-rolled cigars as well as cigars with tobacco that have been soaked and aged in Tennessee whiskey barrels. Tickets for the Winter Bourbon Festival are $95 and include a commemorative tasting glass sponsored by Jim Beam, sampling of bourbons and specialty craft beers, and unlimited BBQ food. This is a 21+ event. All attendees must show valid photo ID for admission. To purchase tickets, go to www.winterbourbonfestival.com.
