Landmark October line-up
P
icking up where they left off at the close of summer, Landmark on Main Street has a stellar lineup of musicians, comedians and other performers scheduled to take the Jeanne Rimsky Theater stage in October. Here is a preview: TUSK, The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute, kicks off on Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. The band’s note-for-note re-creation of the music of the iconic quartet will have you on your feet and singing along. You’ll swear they are channeling the originals. Manhattan Comedy Night returns on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. Veteran comic Sandy Marks hosts an evening of stand-ups straight from the NYC comedy clubs. The show makes the perfect date night or moms’/dads’ night out. JJ Grey’s solo tour makes its only Long Island stop on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. Bluegrass meets blue collar with all of the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. Special guest Clarence Bucaro of Passionate Kind opens the show. Poco mixes the old and the new on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The band’s distinctive harmonies and stellar musicianship helped define the sound of country-rock. Now after 50 years, founder Rusty Young says this is “a band reborn.” Critics agree — hearing Poco today, it’s the sound of a legendary band once again hitting its stride. Bobby Conte Thornton will sing “Blame it on My
Youth” on Friday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. The recent star of “A Bronx Tale” brings his highly acclaimed cabaret act back home. Conte’s grandparents, Helen and Tom Conte, are longtime Manhasset residents. Conte’s special guest, “A Bronx Tale” creator Chazz Palminteri, will join him on stage. Parsonsfield & Sawyer Fredericks round out the month on Friday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. Parsonsfield, the western Massachusetts-based quintet praised for making “the most jubilant and danceable indie roots music this side of the Carolinas” (NPR), double-bills with Sawyer Fredericks. The 19-year old Fredericks is an authentic and original Americana artist with an old soul. His deep, beyond-his-years lyrics and melodies, raw, soulful vocals, and powerful live performances took him to the top spot on season 8 of NBC’s “The Voice.” At the Parsonsfield & Sawyer Fredericks concert, Landmark will recognize Props to Port Teens from the town who are carrying on the great Port tradition of activism and community service. Teens, adults, teachers and others in the community are being asked to nominate middle and high school students. For more information on this effort, contact Amy Dash at 516-767-2355. Tickets for all shows are available through Landmark’s Box Office, 516-767-6444, and online at www. landmarkonmainstreet.org. Landmark on Main Street’s Jeanne Rimsky Theater is located at 232 Main St. in Port Washington.

Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. (ongoing performances through Oct. 14) This intriguing work was inspired by an actual incident: women were banned from the artists’ dinner to plan the ďŹ rst Impressionist painting exhibit in 1874, even though works by women were to be shown. In the play, the dinner is at the home of Victor, a successful artist, and Clovis, an artist who no longer paints. Comptroller to speak at Temple Emanuel State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli will offer a talk at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The title of the talk is: “The State of Our State.” Thomas DiNapoli is the 54th Comptroller of the State of New York. A lifelong Long Islander, DiNapoli was raised in a middle-class, union household and saw the value of hard work and stretching every dollar in the example set by his parents. In 1972, DiNapoli won his first election and served as a trustee on the Mineola Board of Education, becoming the first 18-year-old in New York State to hold public office. He attended Hofstra University, earning a bachelor’s degree in history and graduated magna cum laude in 1976. He worked in the telecommunications industry for 10 years, and went to night classes and earned a master’s degree from The New School University’s Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions. In 1986, he ran for the New York State Assembly and was elected to represent the 16th District in northwestern Nassau County for the next 20 years. DiNapoli was elected State Comp-

A turkey feast for fall entertaining For some reason fall and turkey go together in my mind. When the weather starts to turn I start to crave turkey and more turkey. The idea of roasting a whole turkey is a daunting task as well as extremely time-consuming…between the basting and the roasting it is a whole day affair! No thank you! By boning and tying a turkey breast you can easily make an elegant and delicious “Turkey Roulade.” The butchering may be done 24 hours in advance, leaving you only the roasting on the day of feasting! Follow the step by step directions below and add a few delicious and interesting side dishes and you have a fall feast, perfect for entertaining throughout fall and even perfect for a not so timeconsuming Thanksgiving Feast. I promise that once you enjoy the delights of a Boneless Roasted Turkey Breast you may reconsider roasting a whole bird the next time you feast on turkey! Menu (Serves 6-8) Boneless Roasted Turkey Breast with Gravy* Corn Pudding Mashed Potatoes* Ginger Orange Carrots Blueberry Crumble* *Recipe Not Given
Boneless Roasted Turkey Breast 1 (5 to 7 lb.) organic turkey breast, trimmed 1 tblsp. Kosher salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 6 tblsp. sweet butter cut into pats 6 Sprigs flat leaf parsley Olive oil 1. Position turkey breast skin side up on cutting board. Using sharp knife, remove each breast half from bone by cutting through skin on either side of center bone. Continue to work knife along bone, until each breast half is removed. You will have two lobes. Reserve breastbone for future stock making, if desired. Combine salt, and pepper in a bowl. Sprinkle breasts all over with salt mixture. 2. Lay two 24-inch pieces of kitchen twine crosswise in middle of 8 1/2” by 4 1/2” loaf pan, a few inches apart. Arrange 1 breast half skin side down in pan on top of twine. Place butter pats and parsley on top of breast. Position remaining breast half over first, skin side up, with thick end over tapered end. Tuck turkey into edges of pan to fit if necessary. Tie twine tightly to secure. Remove turkey from pan and continue to tie the turkey breast loaf at 1-inch intervals. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
ALEXANDRA TROY The Culinary Architect 3. Three hours before serving, adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Place oil in 12-inch cast iron skillet. Add turkey and cook until well browned on all sides, about 10 minutes per side. Continue roasting until turkey registers 160 degrees, 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 hours. Transfer turkey to carving board and let rest for 15 minutes. Carve, platter and serve. Corn Pudding 1 lb. frozen corn, defrosted 3/4 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 2/3 cup cornmeal (I use Mitty Gritty Grain Co. of Vermont’s “Our Blend”, available nittygrittygrain.com. This Organic cornmeal is the best I have ever tasted)
1/4 cup sugar 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1 cup sour cream 6 tblsp. unsalted butter, melted 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1. Adjust oven rack to uppermiddle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 8” by 12” rectangular baking dish. 2. Combine cream and 1 1/2 cups corn in blender and process until coarse puree forms, about 30 seconds. Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt and baking soda together in a large bowl. 3. Add sour cream, melted butter, egg and pureed corn mixture to blender and blend. Whisk sour cream mixture into flour mixture until combined. Place remaining corn into rectangular dish. Transfer batter to prepared dish by pouring it over the corn. 4. Bake until edges of pudding are lightly browned and top is slightly puffed, about 35 minutes. Let cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Serve warm. Also delicious the next day, reheated!
1 small knob fresh ginger, ground 1/4 tsp. Kosher salt 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Place all ingredients on a baking sheet. 3. Roast 15 minutes, stirring once. Turn on broiler. Broil 2 minutes. 4. Place carrots on a platter. Sprinkle top with Kosher salt and serve. Annual cider festival kicks off on Sept. 29 Pour the Core: A Hard Cider Festival returns to Heckscher State Park on Saturday, Sept. 29. With a pay-one-price ticket purchase, attendees will be able to sample over 75 ciders from local, national and international cider makers. Pour the Core will showcase locally produced ciders from Riverhead Ciderhouse in Riverhead, Po’ Boy Brewing in Port Jefferson Station, and Diner Brew Co. in Mt. Vernon, as well as hand-selected national and international brands including Ace Cider in California, Citizen Cider in Vermont, and Romilly Cidre in France. “The event is sure to impress both cider lovers and fun seekers alike,” said event organizer Kristyn Dolan with Starfish Junction, producers of Pour the Core. The festival will offer a unique line-up of ciders to sample, as well as food available to purchase from some of Long Island’s popular food
trucks. A not-to-be-missed highlight of the cider festival is the Cider Donut Eating Contest, this year sponsored by East Main and Main donut bar and Po’ Boy Brewery, both with retail locations in Port Jefferson. Twenty-five festival attendees will test their donut eating skills for a prize package valued at more than $500, including a year’s sup-
ply of donuts, plus bragging rights until next year’s Pour the Core event. Contestants will receive a cider donut, which will be hung from a string. The contestant who eats their donut fastest without using their hands will be declared the winner. Floral Park native, and twotime Pour the Core reigning do-
nut eating champion Christopher Bingold is attending and hopes to defend his undefeated title. “This will be my third year at the festival and both my wife and I love trying new ciders as well as our favorites,” said Bingold. “My first year, I entered the contest on a whim and was surprised when I won. I was just as surprised last year when I won for the second time and hopefully I can get it done a third time,” he added. When asked about his training and strategy for this year’s attempt, he humbly replied, “I don’t really have a strategy beside eat as quickly as possible.” Pour the Core: Long Island will help two worthy charities: KiDS NEED MoRE, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of children, families and young adults coping with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, and the National Heritage Trust. Tickets to Pour the Core are
as follows: VIP Session ($60) will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., and General Admission Session ($45) takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Designated Driver tickets are also available: $15 for VIP ticketholders and $12 for those with general admission tickets. This is a 21+ event and a valid ID is required for entry. No children or pets are permitted. The festival will take place rain or shine, under tents, and all ticket sales are final. Heckscher State Park is located at 1 Heckscher State Pkwy in East Islip. The event will be held in Field 2. The park will collect $8 per vehicle for parking. Parking is free for vehicles with a valid NYS Empire Pass. For tickets and more information about the event, visit pourthecore.com/LongIsland.
