GOING GREEN

in your lawn and garden this spring

S

pring is a season of rejuvenation. As the cold days of winter drift away, spring blooms begin to sprout and grass regains its lush green

look. Green is certainly a color that’s synonymous with spring. Gardening enthusiasts can find a way to make spring even more green by embracing several eco-friendly gardening practices as they bring their lawns and gardens back to life in the months to come.

CREATE A COMPOST PILE Composting is an eco-friendly way to enrich lawns and gardens. Composting helps to conserve water because compost promotes moisture retention in soil, reducing homeowners’ need to water their lawns and gardens while also helping them to save money on their

water bills. Composting also helps homeowners avoid the need to use potentially harmful chemical fertilizers because compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer. In addition, according to Canada’s Green Action Centre, compostable materials make up 40 percent of residential waste. So composting can dramatically reduce the amount of waste homeowners ultimately send to landfills.

REPLACE GAS-POWERED MOWERS WITH REEL LAWN MOWERS Reel mowers may seem like relics from simpler times, but today’s reel mowers, while just as eco-friendly as their predecessors, are unlike those of yesteryear. According to the Planet Natural Research Center, an online resource for organic gardeners, gas-powered engines emit more than 10 times the hydrocarbons per amount of gas burned

than auto engines. But reel mowers are fuel-free and less expensive than gaspowered mowers. Planet Natural also notes that reel mowers snip grass like scissors, leaving finer trimmings that can serve as nourishing, weed-deterring mulch for yards.

WATER AT THE RIGHT TIMES OF DAY Homeowners who water their lawns and gardens at the right time of day can help the planet and reduce their energy bills. As spring gradually gives way to summer, temperatures typically rise. Watering during the coolest times of the day means less water will be lost to evaporation, ensuring water-needy soil will get all it needs to help lawns and gardens thrive. Early morning watering before the sun reaches its midday peak and/or evening watering as the sun is setting are typically great times to water

lawns and gardens, rather than when temperatures are at their hottest.

USE A RAIN BARREL Rain barrels provide another great way to conserve water while tending to lawns and gardens. Rain barrels collect and store rain water from roofs and downspouts, keeping water from washing into sewage systems where it can’t be put to good use. Water collected in rain barrels can be used in various ways. Many homeowners can use water from rain barrels to water their lawns, gardens and houseplants, saving money on their water bills along the way. Spring gardening season provides a great opportunity for lawn and garden enthusiasts to embrace a variety of ecofriendly practices that can save them money and protect the planet.

Safety rules to live by

hildren and pets make best friends for life, but keep them both safe with some tips from our trainers Thinking of adding a furry member to your family this year? That’s great news, especially if you have kids. The beneďŹ ts to children of having a pet are vast: increases in self-esteem, nurturing skills, cooperation and, best of all, the creation of an unconditional, loving bond that brings immeasurable joy to your entire family. But before you bring home your dog, cat, puppy or kitten, it’s important that your kids (and you, too!) know some simple rules to guard against injuries such as bites and scratches, which are often caused by children yanking an animal’s tail, chasing or cornering it or approaching it suddenly. First, it’s important to remember that dogs are “pack animalsâ€? and live according to a social hierarchy. When a dog enters your home he views you and your family as litter mates and will typically ‘pick on’ the youngest female member of the family or whoever shows fear. That’s why you must establish every person in the family as an authority ďŹ gure or ‘pack leader’ to the dog by simple, everyday interactions. Here are some handy tips to guarantee that your children and your pets will have a safe and happy relationship: • Never leave a young child unsupervised with an animal. Accidents happen even with the most trustworthy children

C

and pets. • Never approach any animal, even your own, when he or she is eating, sleeping, chewing on a toy, in its crate or caring for its young. • Always pet an animal gently, with no pulling or tugging, and never from behind. • Don’t make loud noises or sudden moves when approaching an animal. • Always ask an adult before approaching an animal you don’t know. • If the adult says the pet is friendly, reach out your hand with the palm facing up and gently move it toward the pet’s nose for sniďŹƒng. Do not touch the animal’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth or genitals. • Avoid contact with a dog or cat’s waste, which can transfer disease. Young children are especially tempted to reach into the cat’s litter box; it looks like a mini-sandbox! • Don’t let your child touch a dog or stand near him during times of heightened excitement—for example, while the dog is eating; when someone comes to the door; or when the dog is barking at a squirrel in the yard or at someone through the window. And remember, make sure your children understand that a pet is a living creature to be cared for and respected. Animals have needs and feelings, and they rely on us, their caretakers, for companionship and loving care. Article and photo courtesy of North Shore Animal League America www.animalleague.org

ALLERGIES

Tips on surviving the season fter a long winter, spring is right around the corner. That means warmer, longer days and....... tree pollen allergy season! Everyone wants to know if it’s going to be a bad year for pollen. Unfortunately, like death and taxes, the onset of pollen is unavoidable. However, don’t despair. There is a lot that you can do even before taking medications. The most important thing is to try to reduce pollen exposure. To do that, you have to “outsmart the season. Obviously, the smartest choice is to limit outdoor activities primarily during the highest two weeks of the pollen. Think about having small children with bad allergies stay inside for gym and recess at school. If you must go outside, be aware that pollen in the air varies from day to day. You should plan your outdoor activities when the counts are lowest. On an average day, counts rise during the morning, peak around mid-day and then gradually fall. The lowest counts are before dawn and in the early evening. Therefore, if you want to go out for that walk or run, best to get up with the sun or go after work. Weather and environmental factors

A

are also important. Certainly on the days it rains, the counts are much lower as the rain washes the pollen out of the air. Dry days with strong wind are not

great no matter what, as the pollen gets blown around which is not good for sufferers. If you still want to do an outdoor activ-

ity, make sure to wear a hat and put on sunglasses. The less direct contact your body has with the pollen, the better o you are. Continued on Page 63

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN pring is a time for all things new and freshening our homes with some updates for warmer weather living is no exception. Current trends in design endeavor to answer a central question: How does one optimize time spent at home?

inside by extending materials of contiguous spaces. Bluestone flooring, exposed timbers on ceilings and performance fabrics are just a few examples of materials used to marry spaces in and out. Steel doors and operable glass walls are gaining traction as a way to enjoy views year-round.

TRANSITIONAL DESIGN

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

In recent years, homeowners have begun reducing their visual clutter via careful editing of their homes. A classically designed façade that fits into an established neighborhood may have its ornamentation highly pared down. Internal spaces are more open than segregated, and decoration may be cleaner.

Enjoying the out of doors is extended after sunset with outdoor lighting; temperatures are stabilized with misting systems and radiant heaters. Consistent wish-list items have been pools, from those large enough for family play to smaller lap pools. Fire pits and usable, flat lawn spaces for play are important. Sound systems and electronics are integrated for television viewing.

INTEGRATED LIVING: In a world where we are more device-connected than ever, we find reconnection with nature increasingly important. Outdoor organically connects to the

HOME OFFICES Home offices have grown in many new home designs to include flexible work spaces that also serve as an alter-

nate guest bedroom, homework area or library. Technology has allowed homeowners the ability to work full time from your home and still interact with colleagues and professionals in offices.

TECHNOLOGY “Smart homes” now utilize a computer to control lighting, temperature, security, window treatments, pool temperature—even grocery shopping. With increased demand for energy and water conservation devices, the emerging technologies assist in facilitating these systems in the home. Necessity has provided us with technology that enables the basic residential infrastructure to support the need for total integration, utilizing wireless hand-held devices, such as laptops, smart phones and tablets. With the need for sustainability, energy conservation, audio, security, lighting and window treatment controls,

manufacturers have introduced many affordable and “user-friendly” systems. Technology is growing at such a quick pace that it is important to select systems that are upgradable. The most consistent overall design trend that has emerged over the last ten years that continues across all our disciplines is quality over quantity: Families are opting for smaller homes that feature higher-quality materials. Leaving a smaller carbon footprint is a common conversation. As Harrison Design founder, William H. BY GRACE MCQUADE As we’ve entered the season associated with rebirth, renewed life and the religious rites of Easter and Passover, Hollywood will deliver a host of films involving miracles and resurrections, omens and magic, the supernatural and the spiritual. The hidden realms between life and death, heaven and earth, and premonition and destiny are the weighty subjects in forthcoming dramas, thrillers, biopics and horror flicks. Throughout film history, there have been stories told on the big screen that have explored the mysteries of the universe, the marvels of humanity, and the dominions where unrest souls lie. Whether these motion pictures

were intended to scare us (“The Shining”), inspire us (“Field of Dreams”), shock us (“The Sixth Sense”), make us laugh (“Heaven Can Wait”) or make us cry (“Ghost”), movies about the wonders of life – and the afterlife – continue to fascinate us. Similarly, the films that will be unveiled this spring include stories about faith and awe that will uplift audiences, as well as depictions of malevolent spirts and exhumed beasts that promise to terrify. So get ready for frightening thrills and breathtaking chills over the coming months, with a forewarning that moviegoers should keep their minds (and their eyes) open as they watch the following films.

ski’s baby and plagued by visions of her imminent death by Manson’s satanic cult in this foretelling version of the true and tragic story.

APRIL “PET SEMATARY” (April 5; horror/ thriller): One of Stephen King’s scariest novels returns to the big screen, this time starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow, in a story about the Creed family who move to rural Maine near a pet “sematary,” created (and misspelled) by the town’s children to bury the many pets killed on a hightraffic road. When the Creed cat suffers the same fate and is buried in the haunted plot, a wilder version of the feline returns to life. Then, after one of his children is killed, Mr. Creed takes the body to this once ancient burial ground, where it is resurrected into a demonic form. “THE HAUNTING OF SHARON TATE” (April 5; R; drama/horror/thriller): One of the most horrific murders in history is Sharon Tate’s vicious killing at the hands of Charles Manson’s followers. This film takes a look at the last days leading up to the murder from Tate’s point-of-view. The 26-year-old actress, played by Hilary Duff, is pregnant with Roman Polan-

“MARY MAGDALENE” (April 12; R; drama/history/religion): In the year 33 AD, a woman named Mary from Magdala (Rooney Mara) rejects the traditional female roles of wife and mother. Believed to be possessed by her family, she seeks counsel from a preacher and healer who is becoming well-known throughout Judea, Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). Inspired by his messages of peace and love, she joins Jesus, Peter (Chiwetel Eljiofor) and the other disciples on the revolution that inspired Christianity, culminating in the greatest miracle of all, Jesus’ Resurrection. “BREAKTHROUGH” (April 17; PG; biography/drama): Based on a true story, a 14-year-old boy (Marcel Ruiz) falls through the ice on a Missouri lake and stays underwater for more than 15 minutes. At the hospital, he lays lifeless for more than 60 minutes until his mother (Chrissy Metz) prays to God to save him and her son’s heart miraculously starts to beat again. In just 16 days after his near-fatal accident and being clinically dead for an hour, the boy is completely healed in this film about the power of faith that also stars Josh Lucas and Topher Grace. “THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA” (April 19; R; horror/thriller/supernatural): La Llorona, the weeping woman, is trapped between heaven and hell. In life, she drowned her children. In death, her tears are eternal and those who hear her death call are doomed. In 1970s’ Los Angeles, a mother

good life with his pal until he receives “the call” to help once again and is reincarnated into the life of Ethan’s troubled teenage granddaughter.

MAY “TOLKIEN” (May 10; R; PG-13; biography/drama): The writer J.R.R. Tolkien, portrayed in this film by Nicholas Hoult, is known for creating otherworldly realms in his science fiction that includes “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” This biopic that also stars Lily Collins takes audiences inside the author’s brilliant imagination and the formative experiences that inspired his passion to write fantastical stories – from his early years as an orphaned youth, to his time at Pembroke College where he developed a “fellowship” with other outcasts, to his service in World War I.

(Linda Cardellini) and her children are drawn into the spell and only a disillusioned priest (Tony Amendola) can keep the evil at bay as this LatinAmerican legend comes eerily back to life. “UNDER THE SILVER LAKE” (April 19; R; comedy/drama/thriller): A disenchanted young man (Andrew Garfield) finds a beautiful woman (Riley Keough) swimming in his Los Angeles apartment’s pool one evening. They spend a memorable night together, but she vanishes the next morning. Is she alive? Is she real? He then embarks on a surreal journey to uncover the mysterious circumstances behind her disappearance, leading him into bizarre underworlds and a “purgatory” party in the “city of angels.”

“A DOG’S JOURNEY” (May 17; drama/family): In “A Dog’s Purpose,” Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad) gets to live a dog’s life over and over again until he finally finds his human soulmate in a boy named Ethan. In this sequel, Ethan (Dennis Quaid) is now a grandfather. Bailey is leading the

“ALADDIN” (May 24; adventure/ comedy/family): A Genie (Will Smith) comes to life to grant three wishes to a street urchin named Aladdin (Mena Massoud), who comes into possession of his magical lamp. Aladdin uses the lamp to turn himself into a Prince to win the heart of the Sultan’s beautiful and headstrong daughter, Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott). But an evil sorcerer who wishes to unseat the Sultan and rule the land wants the lamp, too. Who will prevail and find love? Find out in this live-action retelling of the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name. “BRIGHTBURN” (May 24; drama/ horror/sci-fi): An infant from another galaxy crash lands on Earth and is taken in by a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) who are longing to have a baby. While this plot may sound like another version of “Superman,” think again. Instead of growing up to become a superhero devoted to helping mankind, the inhuman child (Jackson Dunn) brings death and destruction to all those around him. “AD ASTRA” (May 24; adventure/ drama/mystery): It has been 20 years since a space engineer (Brad Pitt) lost his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who disappeared on a one-way mission to Neptune to find signs of extraterrestrial life. The slightly autistic son decides to embark on a mission of his own to the outer edges of the solar system to find his father and unravel the mystery of what happened to him in a film whose title means “to the stars.” “ROCKETMAN” (May 31; biography/drama/ musical/fantasy): Stardom is the premise of this epic musical

55

fantasy that tells the story of rock superstar Elton John, played by Taron Egerton. From his early days as shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight to his meteoric rise to worldwide, chart-topping success with his overthe-top performances of songs like “Bennie and the Jets” and “Crocodile Rock,” John’s story comes to life in colorful, dream-like sequences that befit a biopic about the largerthan-life “rocketman.” “GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS” (May 31; PG-13; action/ adventure/fantasy): In this sequel to the 2014 “Godzilla” film, the mighty beast Godzilla is unearthed once again – this time to face off against other god-size monsters in a quest to either defend or destroy civilization while under the watchful eye of a cast of characters portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford and Sally Hawkins.

JUNE “DARK PHOENIX” (June 7; action/ adventure/sci-fi): Spring winds down with the highly-anticipated next saga in the X-Men series, which stars Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, who return to face off against a powerful new adversary. This threat turns out to be one of their own (Sophie Turner), who is hit by a mysterious cosmic force while on a rescue mission in space, turning her into a Dark Phoenix capable of incredible destruction. Wrestling with this evil force inside her, the X-Men fight to save her soul and the planet from aliens who wish to rule the galaxy

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home t’s that time of year again when we suddenly feel the need to organize our homes, but what about using this rejuvenating season to plan for your future so you can have the best quality of life as you age? Now is the perfect time for you to prepare, as opposed to react when a crisis hits. Unexpected events can happen at any time, and it is important that legal, medical and other formal arrangements be made before there’s an emergency. Getting started on a plan, doesn’t mean you need to have all questions answered and decisions made. Prioritizing a blueprint for future expectations can be helpful.

HERE’S A RECOMMENDED CHECKLIST OF IMPORTANT CARE COMPONENTS TO CONSIDER. LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE. Due to increased longevity, consider insurance options in the event you need to prepare for likely long term care expenses. Long-term care insurance, in all its new forms, covers care generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. It also helps lighten the ďŹ nancial, physical and emotional stress on your family later on. Also, review all your insurance policies including life insurance to make sure they are up-to-date with beneďŹ ciaries and other notiďŹ cations.

Make sure you take the appropriate tax credits and deductions on your long term care Insurance if you already own it.

MEDICARE/MEDICAID HEALTH INFORMATION. Now is also a good time to make sure you understand your Medicare/Medicaid options, eligibility and covered beneďŹ ts. Familiarize yourself with the A, B, C, and D’s of Medicare and health care coverage

options that’s right for you. Make a list of all doctors, including specialists and other healthcare providers as well as any medications you’re taking. Before a crisis arises make sure you understand Medicare and Medicaid options for home care, personal emergency response systems, physical therapy, adult day care, skilled nursing rehab, long term care facilities, and hospice.

HOME CARE/ SENIOR LIVING/ ASSISTED LIVING / LONG TERM CARE FACILITY. When you need assistance living alone, get to know your options. You may need home care, physical therapy, adult day care, independent/assisted living, or a long term care facility. In the event this occurs, these places offer Continued on Page 63

There’s a bob for everyone. Whether it’s a blunt fringe bob, short layers lob, dip-dye or a whole new shade of hair, the new Spring season brings with it the perfect opportunity to test out the most coveted hairstyles and hair trends sported by celebrities and streetstyle stars. This season is especially good in taking fun, inventive ideas to the forefront, from playing with multiple textures to new incarnations of just plain old pretty looks. Warm blondes, ruby reds, and icy blue is the way to go. Gem tones add instant warmth to your look, making it the perfect way to transition your fall locks into winter blues. The lob has been wildly popular for years, but 2019’s rendition is a bit different. This mid-length style has a lot more layers. It’s a fun, stylish way to take your lob to the next level. Take the plunge with one of this season’s biggest trends: Contour Coloring along with the lob. Contour Coloring highlights certain sections of the hair to extenuate your facial features. It can give more definition to bone structure and enhance a chiseled effect. Then, there’s the pixie cut -- a mod-

ORGANIZING YOUR way to a healthier home

pring and summer are hectic for everyone with longer days and more time outdoors. It’s the perfect opportunity to shift gears and get your home ready for a new season of sports and increased entertaining. Tackling

S

the whole home may seem overwhelming at first, so start small and work your way towards the larger areas. The easiest place to begin is your entry closet. Take out any jackets you haven’t worn or no longer fit. Winter outerwear should be machine washed or

dry cleaned before being stored for the season. If you have an alternative closet, move the winter jackets there; otherwise hang them in a less accessible section of your closet since you won’t be needing them day-to-day. Sort through gloves, scarves

and hats. Make sure all gloves are in a pair by either rolling them like socks or folding them in half. Check that your scarves are clean and free of any holes. Stack hats that you’re keeping in a nice neat pile and then combine all accessories in a clear bin with a lid so you can see what’s inside. If label makers are too ambitious for you, use scotch tape and a sharpie to label the front of the bin. When you have gone through your winter items, you’ll have more room to designate one basket per person for ‘grab-and-go’ items such as shin guards and uniforms for kids, umbrellas and baseball hats for adults. Linen closets don’t typically get a seasonal change over but a few small changes can make a big improvement. Store sheet sets in their own pillowcase so your closet looks neat and it’s easier to grab everything you need when you want fresh sheets. Stack towels by category (bathroom, beach, etc.) and add baskets for corralling toilet paper and toiletries. The garage can often be the black hole of a home. Take heart, you’re not alone. This is a good activity to enlist the help of your spouse and kids on a nice day because it gets everyone up and out of the house for a collective purpose. As an added bonus, you can’t be accused of tossing items without approval!

Before getting started, pick up some heavy-duty trash bags, a wide broom to make sweeping easier and assess your space storage options. If you don’t have shelves in your garage consider purchasing metal shelving units. Clear bins will come in handy here too. Ideally you should put everything out on the driveway and organize into zones as you put things back: sports equipment, tools/gardening, beach items, seasonal decor, household items, trash/recyclables, etc. Once the garage floor is clear, sweep the floor of leaves, wrappers, dirt, etc. It will make a huge difference! Toss anything that’s broken, outgrown or not used. Things like baseball bats and lacrosse sticks can be put in tall standing mesh bins. Make a container for each sport. Items like baseball mitts/ gloves/helmets can be grouped together and labeled for easy access. Put them on a lower shelf so the kids can reach them. Cleaning supplies can be placed in a caddy. Gardening tools should be in a separate box than household tools. If you have a mixed bag of tools, consider buying a home or garden tool set as they are available in a variety of sizes, well organized, portable and easy to store. MANAGING YOUR BRIDAL REGISTRY BY S U E TA B A K I N Spring is a very popular time for both wedding and engagements. Creating and managing a bridal registry can seem like a daunting task, especially with so many options to choose from. Phil and Laura Hershkowitz have been successfully working with brides to be for over 40 years and they are not stopping anytime soon. “We have worked with the grandmother, the mother and now the daughter, ‘ said Phil. “We love what we do and we are always so excited to be a part of such a special time in someone’s life,” he adds. Operating their store Imperial China in the historic George

Allen House, located in the village of Roslyn, the Hershkowitzes have something for everyone, all at different price points. “We have customers that come in and know exactly what they want, while others visit the store a few times before making a final selection. We see that brides today are excited to fill their homes with things that complement their lifestyle as well as shop for the more traditional items that their mothers had registered for,” Phil said. Set up as a mini department store, the three floors each have their own unique aesthetic, making it feel more like a home. “Our retail set up is very different. Customers can imagine the

merchandise in their own homes which makes registering a less stressful situation,” said Laura. For spring 2019, everyday dinnerware has a cleaner look with solid ceramics; white as the most popular color choice. For formal dinnerware, couples are seeing shimmering materials either as a border or within the many bright, beautiful patterns. “Our merchandise certainly showcases trends, but we also know that many patterns and color combinations never go out of style,” Phil said. The many wares found at Imperial China can be used more than way, making items more valuable. Items on a registry list aren’t limited to dishes, flatware and

serving pieces. Today’s bride to be can register for bath mats, robes, pillows, bedding, even unique pieces of artwork. “It’s fun to see what people register for these days. The reaction when a bride sees something she loves is priceless,” Laura comments. When registering, the Hershkowites advise taking your time and evaluating your personal

style. “The gifts you are going to receive are going to be in your home for a long time. Choose the items that reflect who you are and can withstand the test of time. Remember to register for items at different price points. A scented decorative candle can enhance your space just as beautifully as a crystal vase,” Laura said.

EASE INTO SPRING Preparing for springtime activities

pring is here. The calendar has turned, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming and you’re excited to get outside and get moving. Warmer weather leads to more activity; we exercise more, we walk more, we hike and play more outdoor games. Due to winter inactivity, our bodies may not be quite ready for all this activity at once. Often, being over-ambitious can lead to aches and pains we did not anticipate. Chiropractic care can help prepare you and your body for this exciting time of year. If you’ve been waiting for spring to get up, get out and move, you’ll want to shake off that winter “rust”. Ease yourself into your springtime fun to minimize the possibility of aches and pains. Plan ahead to prepare your body for the increase in activity. Take 3-4 weeks to slowly return to activity at a less intense level than you anticipate maintaining. Run 1-2 times a week for 15-20 minutes to prepare for a regular routine of 3-5 times a week for 45-60 minutes. This will allow your body to acclimate to your springtime activity without overwhelming your joints and

S

muscles; thereby decreasing the possibility that injury may occur. The preparation doesn’t stop once you are performing your activity at full go. A common mistake is to stretch before your workout as a warm up. Instead, make a habit of warming up prior to exer-

cise by performing sport specific exercises that increase blood flow and prepare your muscles for the activity ahead. General warm up exercises such as jumping jacks, air squats or light jogging will prime your body for the up-coming exercise and reduce the risk of injury and

pain. Don’t forget that stretching is still an important part of the routine. When you are finished with your sport or activity, your muscles are warm and blood is flowing to these areas, creating a perfect environment to stretch. Take about 10 minutes to stretch both your upper body and lower body. This will help you cool down and maintain flexibility in these tissues, reducing injury so you can continue your springtime routine. Chiropractic care can not only help prepare our bodies for our springtime activity, but keep us healthy as we engage in our exercise or sporting events. Getting regular chiropractic adjustments keeps joints moving freely and restores range of motion. Spinal manipulation can also aid in body re-alignment, thus reducing the aches and pains associated with inactivity. Soft tissue manipulation using both Active Release and Graston Techniques can also aid in mobility by increasing blood flow and decreasing stiffness. It is important to maintain mobility as your activity levels increase to ward off injury. Nicholas F. Amico, DC, CCSP www.516chiropractic.com

ALLERGIES Continued from Page 47 Inside the home, it is very important to keep the windows closed. The same goes for cars and classrooms at school. It certainly is tempting with those beautiful spring days to have the windows wide open but you are going to suffer because of it. Putting on the air conditioner a little early if you are warm is a good idea too, as it helps filter the air. Timing of a shower is also important. Take one in the evening after finishing your outdoor activities (and wash your hair).

PLANNING Continued from Page 58 different levels of care and are unique to individual needs. Research the different choices that exist in your community or nearby.

FINANCIAL & ESTATE PLANNING. Meet with a financial advisor, elder law attorney and family service coordinator to help with your finances, legal documents and final arrangements. Execute important legal documents such as: Power of Attorney, Healthcare Proxy, Living Will, and Will/Trust. Finances and assets should be organized, up to date and easily available. Pre-plan your funeral arrangements now to take the burden off your loved ones.

This removes the pollen off of your body and prevents you from “sleeping with it”. Even with the best of environmental protection, you may still require medications. It is important to speak to your physician to get ample medications prior to the onset of the season and know how to increase the regimen to keep feeling comfortable. Fortunately, as quickly as the pollen comes, the peak soon passes and you can begin to enjoy the beautiful outdoors again without any worry. Dr. David L. Wertheim, M.D., ProHEALTH, http://lookup.prohealthcare.com/ listing/david-wertheim/

ENJOY A

brighter FINANCIAL FUTURE! Start your kids off on the right financial path with smart saving habits.

DOWNSIZING. As you age, you may want to consider moving to a smaller residence or senior living community. Knowing that relocation can be stressful and emotional, working with a Senior Real Estate Specialist can make the process easier. If you are buying a new home you also need an experienced mortgage adviser. There are programs available today for seniors including FHA reverse mortgage purchase. Consider a company to help with sorting and packing. This is a good opportunity to get rid of clutter or junk. The sooner you begin planning, the more at ease you will be knowing everything is in place. Keep in mind you can create a more effective plan with the input and support of your loved ones.
