Grist Mill gets date for raising Building lift set for next week BY R O S E W E L D ON The historic Roslyn Grist Mill will be raised eight feet next week, according to the mill’s owners, the Roslyn Landmark Society. In an email sent to its members, the society said that “teams of preservation specialists” would raise the centuries-old mill on Old Northern Boulevard on Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. The mill will be raised 8 feet, 4 inches above street level, and “workers will quickly add sections of timber cribbing to account for the additional height,” the society said. The raising will allow workers to excavate the existing foundation and begin constructing a “new water-tight foundation.” At the same time, timber frame specialists will remove and restore the structure’s deteriorated columns and support beams. Thursday will not mean the end of the project, however, and the society says that upon finishing the restoration of the whole property “later this year,” the mill Continued on Page 60

which began at the intersection of County Seat Drive and 11th Street in Mineola. Along with Curran, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone helped organize the event. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, state Sen. Anna Kaplan (D-Great Neck), Assemblyman Chuck Lavine (D-Glen Cove), and U.S. Reps. Tom Suozzi (DGlen Cove), Kathleen Rice (DGarden City) and Peter King (R-

Seaford) participated. Schumer tweeted, “We must work together to stand up to anti-Semitism, bigotry, and hatred. I am so proud to stand with everyone at the Long Island March Against Anti-Semitism.” Representatives and members of 12 Chabad institutions, 12 churches, nine temples and seven synagogues attended the march along with hundreds of other Long Islanders.
