THE HAPPY MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF PORT WASHINGTON At the Happy Montessori School, we are influenced by the Montessori philosophy. This says that in order for children to develop to the
fullest, they must have freedom; a freedom that is best achieved through structure and predictability. Dr. Maria Montessori developed the notion of the “prepared environment” which possess certain order and disposes the children to develop at their own speed, according to their capabilities. As a result, children move themselves toward learning. The teacher may prepare the environment, design an activity, and function as a reference person, but it is the children who make choices, who are motivated by the joy of discovery and accomplishment to persist in their chosen task. The Montessori children are free to learn because they have acquired an inner discipline from their exposure to structure and predictability in a noncompetitive environment. www.happymontessori.com 40 Pleasant Avenue Port Washington, NY 11050 Phone: 516-883-1131 Fax: 516-883-8525 Grades: 2.8 years of age through Kindergarten Head of School: Dr. Anita Sehti

The Hannah Kroner School offers a unique educational opportunity The Hannah Kroner school offers a unique educational opportunity to dancers and non dancers alike. Dance makes us aware of ourselves, helps us develop a sense of security, and the desire to achieve. It can be better than other educational means because it combines both the physical and the mental. The goal can be performing, it can be teaching, or functioning in any profession. Dance offers students an opportunity to develop a sense of accomplishment in a joyful environment. The Hannah Kroner School of Dance was established in 1947. The school’s philosophy, then and now, is to educate students in all dance forms, to prepare them to be successful in the varied experiences they will face and demands they will encounter in their lives. Many students find fulfillment in non- performing as well as performing careers because of the extensive dance training they have received through the school. This training has also enabled many graduate students to pass auditions for High School of Performing Arts, summer stock, Broadway shows, television, ballet companies such as Alvin Ailey, San Francisco, Joffrey, and others. The current owner/director of the school, Carol Kaufman-Riley, was a former professional dancer, lifetime member of Dance Educators of America, member AGVA and was a Rockette. Over the past 40 plus years, Ms. Riley and the staff have continued to be innovators of programs unique to dance education on Long Island. Some of these include “Dance and Exercise for Children and Adults with Special Needs,” a recipient of several community
service awards, the “Toddler/Mom,” “Tots Two,” dance birthday parties, modern, musical theater, contemporary, lyrical and the ballroom classes for kids. Much of the current staff has been with the school throughout the years on Long Island. Through its distinctive dance teacher-training program, the school has produced many graduates who have become teachers in the studio and fine educators throughout the country. Most schools focus mainly on the end of the year recital. Since its inception, the Hannah Kroner School has offered an open house right in the studio twice a year so parents can observe their child’s progress in a relaxed atmosphere. This year younger students will be given the opportunity to perform on stage. The School is proud of their community events, Street Fairs, and will be performing at the Williston Park Street Fair On September 16th. Throughout the years, advanced students have consistently won awards at regional and national competitions on Long Island. Most recently the school has added a competition team comprised of students ages 8-10 (the Mini’s), 11- 13 (the Juniors), and 13+( the seniors). Students interested must pass an audition in order to be on the team. At the Hannah Kroner School the emphasis is on the enjoyment of dance, learning good technique, knowing dance vocabulary and achieving all around fitness. With every age group taking a part, beginning at toddlers-walking to seniors at the young age of 90, the goals have remained consistent. If you can walk, you can dance, and with over 70 years of positive affirmation, the School continues to flourish

Jumpstart math success after school BY A L A N F LY E R Goodbye, summer… and hello to a brand new school year full of fun, learning, and potential! As you and your family navigate the back-toschool hustle and bustle of schedule changes, shopping, and charting an action plan for the year ahead, seeking math help may be the last thing on your mind. However, the start of the school year is actually an ideal time to enroll in an after-school math program. Here are five solid reasons why. Summer learning loss is all too real! Many families opt to take an extended break from academics over summer break. However, many studies have documented the loss of skills all students experience when they don’t engage in educational activities over the summer — otherwise known as the “summer
slide.” Math proficiency is especially susceptible. Furthermore, a RAND Corporation study reported the cumulative nature of summer learning loss — left unchecked, students could fall farther and farther behind as the years progress. Enrolling in an afterschool math program shortly before or in the early days of the semester can help students ease back into mathematical thinking, decrease learning gaps, and set them up for a successful year of math! You’ll pinpoint your child’s strengths and weaknesses sooner rather than later. Why wait for the first round of test and quiz grades to arrive? Find out where your child stands by seeking out a personalized after-school math program. They’ll start by diagnosing areas of mastery
as well as problem points. This presents a valuable opportunity for you and your child to understand the big picture and implement a strategic action plan that prepares your child for what lies ahead. School year pressures have yet to surface. With students and teachers set-
tling into new routines, it’ll be a few weeks before students feel the full brunt of school responsibilities and deadlines. Use this time to freshen up math skills, reinforce foundational knowledge, and get a head start on all the math concepts on this year’s agenda.
Math becomes a priority sooner rather than later. What’s on your family’s extracurricular wish list? As time passes and school year pressures increase, it could become necessary to squeeze extra math learning into your child’s after-school repertoire. If the situation proves especially critical, your child may have to give up a beloved activity in order to fit in muchneeded math remediation! Avoid potentially disappointing schedule changes down the road by making room now for an after-school math program with flexible scheduling. A balanced afterschool routine can help prevent burnout even during the most stressful times of the school year. It’ll help set the tone for a positive relationship with math. It’s no secret that sitting through math
class can be a somber experience for some students … especially during a time when kids shift back into a structured school routine after two months of carefree summer days. This is especially true for those who have struggled in math for years. Approaching math with a positive and enthusiastic attitude is the first step to excelling in the subject. A math program that offers an upbeat, productive learning environment and has an excellent track record for engaging students in the beauty and wonder of math can prove especially transformative! How will you set the stage for math success this school year? Alan Flyer, Center Director Mathnasium of Roslyn roslyn@mathnasium.com www.mathnasium.com/ roslyn

SAT or ACT: Which is best to take? DR. JOAN LEVY With a choice of two major exams, tests which have a very important role in college admissions, students and their parents often worry: Which exam is best? Which exam is easier? However, a far better question is: Which test is best for me? Which test allows me to show my abilities to the greatest advantage? And the answer to that question is not the same for everyone. While the two tests have some overlapping skills, they are suďŹƒciently dierent in content, format and scoring to merit a much closer examination. The SAT is the exam that most of you are familiar with. Your sister, brother, cousin or parents probably took the SAT for their own college admissions. However, the test has changed dramatically in recent times. The current SAT has 4 sections and an optional essay (which many colleges want to see). The exam includes: Writing and Language, Reading and two sections of Mathematics. Scores range from 200 to 800 on the
combined English and Reading sections and 200 to 800 on the combined Mathematics sections, with a separate score for the essay. So your total score on the SAT ranges from 400 to 1600 plus your essay score. The ACT is a dierent exam. It contains four sections with an optional essay. These sections are the following: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. Unlike the SAT, each section is scored separately and ranges from 1 to 36 per section, with a separate score for the essay. The composite (the average of the four subtests) also ranges from 1 to 36 plus your essay score. The major dierences between the two tests lie mainly in the Mathematics, Reading and Science sections. The Writing and Language section on the SAT is similar to the English section on the ACT. The two Mathematics sections on the SAT present more diďŹƒcult questions than the Mathematics section on the ACT. In addition, the SAT Mathematics section presents a portion
of the test where calculator use is not allowed and a portion of the test that is not multiple choice — you must write in your own answers for these questions. These factors make the SAT Mathematics considerably harder. The ACT Mathematics, on the other hand, is a completely multiple-choice section where the calculator is permitted. The Reading section of the SAT also presents more diďŹƒcult questions but the timing is more lenient (52 questions in 65 minutes). The ACT Reading section has more straightforward questions, but the timing is much more difďŹ cult (40 questions in 35 minutes).
In addition, the ACT has a Science section which tests science reasoning, not knowledge of scientiďŹ c facts. The timing on the Science section is also tight — 40 questions in 35 minutes. Lastly, the essays on the two tests have dierent formats. The SAT essay asks for an analysis of a written work that is presented, while the ACT essay is a persuasive piece of writing that asks you to take a position and defend it. So which test should you take? I advise you to go through each exam and discuss the two tests with people who are familiar with both exams and can evaluate your skills — professionals who specialize in SAT and
ACT preparation. I recommend separate teachers: one for the math and science sections and one for the English and reading sections. After all, you would not see a cardiologist for a vision problem, so don’t see a math tutor for grammar. You might try a practice SAT and ACT — available from the makers of each test. I prefer actual exams, not simulated tests with questions that may or may not be comparable to the real exams. Use the summer months! You don’t have the stresses of schoolwork and extracurricular activities to distract you and eat up your time during the summer, so you will be able to dedicate more time and energy to the exams. Find experienced professionals who are knowledgeable in test preparation and work with them consistently. Summer is a great time to work on SAT and ACT skills for the coming year! How to help students choose an extracurricular activity
E
xtracurricular activities can benefit students in various ways. Academic clubs, sports and volunteer organizations provide students with opportunities to grow as people and make new friends while also teaching kids skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to college. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come.
Ask kids to jot down their interests. Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a school-sponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their im-
age in the eyes of college admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

ways to make mornings less hectic
M
any families find the rush is on to make it to school and work on time each morning. Feeling rushed in the morning is a recipe for added stress. Rushing through things is a poor way to begin a day, and those feelings of uneasiness can put a damper on the rest of the day ahead. Making mornings less hectic involves a few different strategies that parents and kids can easily incorporate into their daily routines. Wake up slightly earlier. Getting up earlier than normal, even if it’s just 15 to 20 minutes before you’re accustomed to getting out of bed, can help reduce morning stress. Resist the temptation to hit the snooze button over and over again. A few extra minutes each morning can make you feel more relaxed and make for a smooth, stress-free start to the day. Get some work done the night before. Prepare lunches the night before and have them ready in the refrigerator. In addition, lay your clothes for the following day out each night. This saves time and takes a couple more things off your morning to-do list. Ease back into a routine. As a new school year dawns or a long vacation comes to an end, begin going to bed earlier and start waking up earlier as well. This can make the transition from carefree mornings to busy mornings go more smoothly.
Make school and work mornings less harried with some easy tips to add to routines. Prep backpacks in the evening. Look through folders, sign paperwork, check assignments, and do whatever is you need to do the night before to save your family from having to scramble in the morning. This ensures those permission slips get signed and items make it back into school bags. Opt for school lunch a few times. Look ahead on the school lunch menu and speak with children about which meals they enjoy. Let kids purchase school lunch on those days to give yourself a day off from lunch detail. Have quick breakfast foods available. Smoothies, cereal bars, oatmeal, and whole-grain cereals are fast and nutritious ways to start the day. Carpool whenever possible. Busy families can save themselves extra work by proposing a neighborhood carpool. Sharing school dropoff detail frees time up for parents once or twice a week, and kids may enjoy traveling to school with their friends. Mornings can be tricky when family members are getting ready for school and work at the same time. By practicing a few daily rituals, it’s possible to curb the rush and start the day happier and more relaxed.
