emorial Day Weekend is when we honor our fallen Veterans, the sacrifices made by activeduty military and those retired from service. In observance of Memorial Day Weekend, American Airpower Museum continues their historic participation in the Jones Beach Air Show, flying their fabled “Arsenal of Democracy” warbirds over Jones Beach on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30!
AAM’s fleet of iconic and meticulously restored military aircraft will include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber, Douglas C-47 Skytrain troop transporter, Grumman TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber, Curtiss P-40 Flying Tiger, P-51D Mustang Fighter, AT-6 Texan Warbird and AT28D5 Nomad Vietnam Era Fighter. On May 29 and May 30, Hangar 3 opens at 10:00 a.m. Arrive there early, park your car, sign in and enjoy the exhibits. During the morning, you’ll be
called outside to watch our pilots start their engines, taxi and lift off, performing exciting flybys with Republic Air Traffic Control permission, before leaving to join the Jones Beach Air Show. Have lunch and later on watch as our aircraft return from Jones Beach in the afternoon, touch down and taxi back to Hangar 3. Flight experiences also available each day on AAM’s AT-6 Texan and Waco Biplane! AAM also welcomes three visiting
U.S. Navy EF/A-18 Super Hornets from May 27tthrough May 30. The Hornets are supersonic combat jets, designed as both fighters and attack aircraft. Exclusive to AAM, Hornets are not in the Jones Beach Air Show and will be on AAM’s ramp all four days. Hornets are scheduled to depart on May 31 or June 1. Since everyone can’t be at Jones Beach on Saturday and Sunday, Clyman decided to stage this four-day salute so folks on the beach, as well as those closer to home, can enjoy AAM’s warbirds. So, if you want to avoid the Wantagh Parkway crawl to Jones Beach, you can park instead for free in AAM’s lot and along New Highway! Bring the family, hang out with us all day, and watch exciting warbirds in action each day! One other note. The Air Show fea-
tures a U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II, “The Warthog,” flying over Jones Beach. AAM has its very own A-10, our nation’s premier close air support attack aircraft and it’s on display outside Hangar 3, with staff ready to answer your questions about its special features and armaments! Admission for Adults is $15, Seniors & Veterans $10 and Children 5-12 $8. Tickets and pre-registration is not required and admission is on a first-come-
first-serve basis. The Museum can now operate at 100 percent capacity, in accordance with New York’s May 19lifting of pandemic capacity limits. However, there is still a need for social distancing and guests must wear face masks plus have temperatures taken at the door. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all four days, plus AAM is open Monday, May 31st, Memorial Day. Don’t miss this one!

Memorial Day on the North Shore BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Car parades and socially distant events headline the slate of Memorial Day ceremonies to be held on the North Shore. Port Washington’s American Legion Post 509 announced that it will hold a parade on Memorial Day, Monday, at 10 a.m. The parade will include Post 509, the VFW Henderson-Marino Post 1819, the Port Washington Fire Department, the Port Washington Police Department and the Sands Point Police Department, according to Douglas W. Weston, commander of Post 509. The parade will begin at the corner of Campus Drive and Port Washington and will end at the John Philip Sousa Memorial Bandshell on Main Street, where a ceremony will occur at 11 a.m. The parade’s grand marshal is Dr. Paul A. Hamlin, a decorated Vietnam veteran and retired medical doctor. In 1968, after Hamlin completed his medical internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital, he enlisted in the Air Force. From August 1968 to July 1969, Hamlin served as a general medical officer and chief of pharmacy service at Bien Hoa Air Base in South Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star for his leadership and devotion to duty. “Captain Hamlin demonstrated outstanding professional skill, remarkable knowledge and a calm assuredness in his numerous contributions to the improvement of the health and welfare of the base military population,” Hamlin’s cita-
tion stated. “Following hostile attacks, he contributed immeasurably to the smooth handling and disposition of casualties, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.” In 1969, he returned to this country and finished his military tour at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. A year later, he resumed his medical education at New York Medical College and Metropolitan Hospital as a resident and chief resident with a subspeciality in pulmonology. He went on to have a private group practice in Great Neck for 45 years. He was also an attending physician at North Shore University Hospital. Hamlin and his wife, Jane, have been married for 54 years, with two children and five grandchildren. The Village of Floral Park will host a car parade starting at Village Hall at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, followed by a ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 21 Floral Parkway at 11:15 a.m. The ceremony will include the national anthem, a presentation of wreaths to honor the fallen, a roll call of village residents who died while serving in the armed forces, and a presentation of bouquets to Gold Star families. The Village of New Hyde Park will host a car parade on Saturday, starting on the southbound lane of Hillside Boulevard. The parade will start at 9:30 a.m., with cars traveling to Village Hall at 10 a.m. for a wreath-laying ceremony. The parade will then proceed to Memorial Park for a full ceremony scheduled to start at 11 a.m. The village encouraged residents to

The Williston Park American Legion Post 144 will host a parade starting at the Legion’s 730 Willis Ave. building at 9 a.m. The Village of East Williston will host a ceremony at noon at the Village Green. The event will feature the national anthem, wreath presentations, a military salute, mayor’s awards, race awards and the playing of taps. The Town of North Hempstead will commemorate Memorial Day with a drive-in fireworks event at North Hemp-
stead Beach Park on Saturday at 9 p.m. While the coronavirus pandemic caused the town to postpone any in-person events last year, this year restrictions have been eased on how the public can honor those who lost their lives while serving in the military. North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth said town officials are eager to host an event with people physically in attendance, although they will remain in their vehicles. “The Town is excited to continue this tradition for the North Hempstead community,” Bosworth said. “We look forward to everyone coming together on Memorial Day Weekend as we kick off the unofficial start of summer and also reflect on the supreme sacrifices made by the brave men and women in the armed forces.” Officials said each vehicle will be required to pay a $10 entry fee at North Hempstead Beach Park. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with the fireworks kicking off promptly at 9 p.m. The fireworks, produced by Santore’s World Famous Fireworks, will be synced to music broadcast through the car radio. The event will admit only North Hempstead residents, with capacity being limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Officials said residents are encouraged to bring nonperishable and canned goods as part of the town’s ongoing donation drive. Registration is not required. Westbury Arts celebrates official opening The “unveiling” of a huge outdoor mural, Meet the Artist, and a weekend of activities for adults and children on Saturday, June 120 and Sunday, June 13, mark the opening of the new, permanent home of Westbury Arts, 255 Schenck Ave. (just off the main street of Post Avenue), Since 2013 Westbury Arts, originally known as The Greater Westbury Council for the Arts has been operating out of borrowed space throughout Westbury. “Now we have a centralized location to continue to bring art, music, dance, theater and literature to our community and beyond,” says director Julie Lyon. “Many thanks to the Village of Westbury,
Mayor Peter Cavallaro and the Westbury community for their confidence in Westbury Arts and support of our mission and vision. Together we create Westbury!” A highlight of the official opening weekend is the Saturday, June 12 open house from 1 to 5 pm is the opportunity to meet artist Francisco Ciccio Poblet, the last living apprentice of Salvador Dalí. From 7 pm to 9 pm, the theater premieres an original comedy in one-act by Meagan J. Meehan entitled “The Values of Gold, Silver & Bronze,” followed by musical performances by Carle Place High School students Devin Eichel and Antonio Urrutia.

To register and for information: https://westburyarts.org/ Across the street from the Westbury Arts building (covering the entire sidewall of Jin’s Apple Farm) is a 53-feetlong hand-painted mural. The design for the mural was decided by local middle school students based on the village of Westbury’s motto: “A Community for All Seasons.” The colorful mural depicts a joyful change of seasons from Winter to Autumn in a style that blends realism, abstraction, and animation. The painting of the mural was led by artist Marie Saint-Cyr and Westbury Arts Board of Directors members Meagan J. Meehan
and Chris Hobbs, the Vice President of the organization. The mural took six weeks to complete and community members and Westbury Middle School students participated in the painting. Filmmaker Kyle LeClaire, son of movie maker Doug LeClaire, filmed the progress of the mural with the intention of creating a short documentary based on the project, which will be aired at a later date. The Westbury Arts mural project was made possible, in part, with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Huntington Arts Council.
