Horses, dogs to share top billing BY M AY L A N L . S T U D A R T The world-renowned Longines Masters equine competition is joining forces with the American Kennel Club for the first time in an event where horses and dogs will vie for nearly $1 million in prize money in Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. People of all ages can expect to see horses flying through obstacles, dogs weaving through courses and celebrities like Team USA’s three-time Olympic medalist and New York native McLain Ward, Olympic silver medalist Lucy Davis, and elite equestrians Georgina Bloomberg and Jennifer Gates. The world’s best equine and canine athletes will be ready to rumble Thursday, April 25, at 4 p.m. through Sunday’s grand finale, the Longines Grand Prix show jumping competition. “Both sports test an animal’s speed and agility as they maneuver a course in their respective sports,” said Brandi Hunter, vice president of public relations and communications for the American Kennel Club. “These sports also show an unbreakable bond between human and animal, whether it be dog or horse.” The Longines Masters of New York is an elite sporting event that attracts the world’s best equestrian athletes and a large international audience of horse enthusiasts. It is the third leg of one of the most prestigious equestrian competitions in the world that occurs annually in New York, Paris and Hong Kong. As such, it is a must-attend event for those who want to catch a glimpse of some of high society’s celebrity artists, fashionistas and business moguls. Thursday begins with an abridged first day from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. featuring the American Kennel Club Agility Premier Cup hosted by EEM, founder of the Longines Masters of New York, and the AKC. Although it’s officially a four-day event, Thursday’s Longines Masters equine competitions are closed to the public. The AKC Agility Premier Cup is invitation only for the select top 60 canine agility competitors and their handlers from around the country. Invitees were chosen from among the finalists in AKC’s 2018 National Agility Championship, Preferred National Agility Championship, and Agility Invitational along with AKC’s 2018 World Agility Team, AKC European Open Team, and AKC European Open Junior Team along with the Westminster Kennel Club 2019 finalists. “There are so many fascinating similarities between the dog and equine sports,” said Carrie DeYoung, director of agility for the American Kennel Club. “Through this event, the public can learn about agility and cheer on the dogs while learning how it relates to equestrian competitions.” Twelve dogs will be entered in five competitions of varying jump heights starting from 8 inches to 24 inches for $10,000 in cash prizes. The winner will also have its name engraved on the AKC Agility Premier Cup trophy that will

Olympian McLain Ward winning the 2018 Longines Grand Prix on Clinta. be displayed in the AKC New York headquarters. The Longines Masters Series’ team says its latest programming is making show jumping more accessible and exciting for families and children, with the addition of face-painting and petting sessions with the award-winning breeds of the AKC Dog Show. “We’re excited to be returning to NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the second edition of the Longines Masters of New York bringing our iconic show jumping series to America, after Europe and Asia,” said Christophe Ameeuw, chief executive officer of EEM. “We strive to offer audiences a unique experience combining the exciting sporting action, hospitality and fun for the family.” Highlights of the weekend are Thursday’s Agility Premier Cup and Friday’s Longines Speed Challenge, a

one-of-a-kind speed competition considered the fastest show jumping competition in the world. Saturday’s Family Day features the Canines and Equines event for those who want an up-close experience with the award-winning breeds of the AKC Dog Show and the Lamborghini Masters Power, where riders compete in a high jump competition where jumps become continuously higher, honoring the winner who can break the over-6-feet barrier. For those who can’t take the height, there’s also a Hobby Horse jump competition among other family-friendly events. The grand finale is on Sunday with the Longines Grand Prix seeing riders compete for the weekend’s largest purse of $400,000. In addition to the competitions, the event will feature live music, luxury shopping, dining and more attractions.

The Dimmer Twins will perform as part of Landmark on Main Street’s Roots Rock series on Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, a.k.a. the Dimmer Twins, formed the Drive-By Truckers in Athens, Ga. in 1996, though their musical collaboration began in the ’80s with the fledgling band, Adam’s House Cat. The name Dimmer Twins is a nod to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who are sometimes known as the Glimmer Twins. This strippeddown duo setting features original solo and duo material penned by both Hood and Cooley, and also some Drive-By Truckers songs that they’ve written. Boasting a mix of southern pride and erudite lyrics, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-

rock acts of the 2000s. The band has long held a progressive fire in their belly having always been outspoken, telling a distinctly American story via craft, character, and concept, all backed by sonic ambition and social conscience. History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Drive-By Truckers’ catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy rock with 1998’s Gangstabilly. However, it was the band’s ambitious double-disc concept album, The Southern Rock Opera, that became its unlikely magnum opus. A two-act affair, the album explored Hood’s fascination with ’70s southern rock while tackling the cultural contradictions of the region, and it helped lay the groundwork for much of the band’s later work. Tickets for The Dimmer Twins are available through Landmark’s box office, by calling 516-7676444 and online at www.landmarkonmainstreet.org. The Roots Rock series is sponsored by the Tepper Family Foundation and WFUV Public Radio.

Audubon talk on the ‘A Midsummer Night’s birds of South Florida Dream’ at Five Towns The North Shore Audubon Society will host a presentation by Scott Stoner and Denise Hackert-Stoner on “Birding South Florida” on Tuesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Manhasset Public Library, 30 Onderdonk Ave. in Manhasset. From its sandy beaches and cypress swamps, to its city parks and the magnificent grassy river of the Everglades, south Florida continues to be a major destina-

tion for birds and birders. Hawks, songbirds, and waterfowl abound, not to be outdone by a wonderful array of wading and shore birds. Join the talk as the Stoners explore some of the hottest of south Florida’s birding hotspots. For more information about the presentation, go to www.northshoreaudubon.org.

The award-winning Five Towns College Theatre Company is presenting “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 28 at 3 p.m. Tickets for the general public are $15 for adults, and $12 for students and seniors. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a Shakespearean comedy that focuses on the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. Most of the play takes place in a forest that is inhabited by the fairies who control six amateur actors. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is all about the very amus-

ing events that lead up to the wedding, including adventures of four young Athenian lovers. The audience will watch Five Towns College students sing, dance and act on stage; the triple threat combination of skills and abilities that they learn in the school’s Theatre Arts program. Also, the musical will give the local community a look at the creative set on stage that the theatrical design and technology students have built and insight into the behind-the-scenes education that takes place on campus. For more information or tickets, go to ftc.edu/ftcpac/ or call 631-656-2148.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

‘EGGstravaganza’at children’s museum Hop on over to the Long Island Children’s Museum for a Spring EGGstravaganza on Saturday, April 13. Peter Cottontail will open the doors after hours, 6 to 9 p.m., for a night of fun activities that celebrate iconic symbols of the season — eggs, bunnies and chicks. The evening will also showcase the “egg-cellent” puppetry skills of Nappy’s

Puppets. Families can start their evening by making a carrot-themed bag to hold all the crafts they’ll make during the night. Activities will include the opportunity to make a bird’s nest hat, a chick puppet and egg necklace, spring tulips and a tasty treat. Additionally, visitors will be able to test their skills in egg relay races, get their face painted, and

make an edible Bunny Tail at Spring EGGstravaganza. Eggs are hidden throughout the museum’s galleries for keen-eyed children to find. Families can add a Nappy’s Puppet show to their Spring EGGstravaganza schedule. Shadow puppeteer Jim (Nappy) Napolitano will bring favorite, spring–themed stories and songs to life in the LICM Theater. Children will meet Little Bunny Foo-Foo, along with the Wizard, the Fairy and the Magic Chicken, during an “eggcellent” performance the whole family will enjoy. Showtimes are 6:15, 7 and 7:45 p.m. There is an additional $4 fee for the performance with EGGstravaganza admission; $3 for LICM members with EGGstravaganza admission. Tickets for “Spring EGGstravaganza” are priced at $12 per person, $10 for LICM members, and can be purchased online at www.licm.org/ eggs. The Long Island Children’s Museum is located at 11 Davis Ave. in Garden City.

VacationArts for kids during recess The Gold Coast Arts Center School for the Arts is once again offering its popular VacationArts program on non-school days for children in pre-K through seventh grade. This year’s spring program is April 22 through 26, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., with activities that include

art, music, chess, acting, and dance, all of which are taught by experienced instructors. Each day of VacationArts is full of artful activities in a professional and creative environment. Children leave the Arts Center each day happy, confident and proud of what they’ve accomplished in Vacation-

Arts. The program takes place at the Gold Coast Arts Center, 113 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck. The affordable tuition includes a nut-free snack and a full lunch while offering optimal flexibility for parents. The Arts Center offers sibling discounts for all camps and classes, and special pricing is available to members. CINEMA SERIES

RED JOAN

BOW TIE SQUIRE CINEMAS 115 MIDDLE NECK ROAD, GREAT NECK

Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information - including details on the building of the atomic bomb to the Soviet government for decades. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical (Tom Hughes); and the devastation of World War II, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. Based on a sensational true story, Red Joan vividly brings to life the conflicts - between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal - of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history. STARRING: Judi Dench, Sophie Cookson, Stephen Campbell Moore, Tom Hughes, Ben Miles, Tereza Sbrova

Visit goldcoastfilmfestival.org or call 516-829-2570 for tickets. Tickets $15/$10 for members when purchased in advance, $20 at the door.
